TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 AUDI A4. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE VEHICLE. SHE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. SHE THEN HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. SHE EXITED AND NOTICED FLAMES UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND FROM UNDER THE HOOD AS WELL. WHEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED, THE FRONT HALF OF THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED, BUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT DID NOT NOTICE ANY FAILURES PRIOR TO THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER, WHO WAS ALSO UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS LABELED AS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000.
THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED MANY TIMES SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE CAR WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY. NOW THE ISSUE IS HAPPENING EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. THE ISSUE IS THAT WHEN MY LIGHTS ARE ON, THEY WILL FLICKER AND GO OUT. I WILL GET AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS "DIPPED HEADLIGHT". THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO FLIP THE LIGHTS OFF AND FLIP THEM BACK ON. DOING THIS RESULTS IN THE CAR BEING WITHOUT LIGHTS FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. SOMETIMES THE RIGHT LIGHT WILL GO OUT AND SOMETIMES THE LEFT LIGHT GOES OUT. THEY CAN ALSO HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME, WHICH RESULTS IN ME DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH NO LIGHTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT AFFECTS THE SAFETY OF THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE ISSUE FOR SOME TIME AND FOUND THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH HIS ISSUE. AUDI IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT DOES NOT HAVE A SOLUTION. THEY CONTINUE TO TELL US TO CHANGE THE LIGHT BULB AT OUR COST, WHICH DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. SINCE THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE A CRASH, RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH, THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL AND SOLUTION PROVIDED. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE CAR AND AUDI SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING IT. *TR
2006 AUDI A4 AVANT 3.2L V6: ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS THE LEFT AND RIGHT HEADLIGHTS GO OUT AND A "DIPPED HEADLIGHT" WARNING LIGHT SHOWS UP ON THE DASH. TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF THEN BACK ON WILL BRING THEM BACK ON MOMENTARILY UNTIL A VIBRATION KNOCKS THEM OUT AGAIN. IT'S USUALLY ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER BUT SOMETIMES BOTH LIGHTS GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME. TURN CAR ON, LIGHTS GO ON THEN AS SOON AS I START DRIVING, MOSTLY WITH A COLD ENGINE, ACCELERATION, LEFT TURN, SLIGHT BUMP/VIBRATIONS IN THE ROAD THE LEFT HEADLIGHT GOES OFF, THERE IS A WARNING MESSAGE IN THE CAR THAT SAYS LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHT, BUT WHEN I TURN THE LIGHTS OFF THEN BACK ON AND IT "FIXES" THE PROBLEM, THEN A FEW MINUTES LATER IT HAPPENS AGAIN AND IF YOU TURN THE LIGHTS OFF IT WILL FIX IT AGAIN, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN (ALMOST) EVERY DAY. IF I GO PARTICULARLY SLOW IN AND OUT OF PARKING LOTS SOMETIMES I SEE THE LIGHT FLICKER BUT IT DOES NOT ALWAYS SHUT OFF RIGHT AWAY, IT MAY TAKE A MINUTE OR TWO FOR IT TO DO THIS LATER. THIS HEADLIGHT ISSUE HAPPENS DAILY AND THE DEALER STATES IT IS A LIGHT BULB ISSUE, BUT THE BULBS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TO PURCHASE AND REPLACE AND I HAVE READ MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY SAME VEHICLE AND REPLACING THE BULB DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE, IT IS A MALFUNCTION THAT THE DEALER IS UNAWARE OF HOW TO FIX. *TR
LEFT HEADLIGHT EXTINGUISHING DURING DRIVING AT NIGHT. DEALERS HAVE CLAIMED THAT THEY CANNOT FIX THE PROBLEM AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS. THIS CAUSES DANGEROUS CONDITIONS BECAUSE THE LIGHT GOES OUT WITH NO WARNING. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING WITH HEADLIGHTS ON AUTO A WARNING LIGHT FOR LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHTS CAME ON. I TURNED THE LIGHT SWITCH OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN AND THE WARNING WENT AWAY. THIS HAPPENED EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND TURNING LIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON MADE THE WARNING GO AWAY. NOW THE PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSED TO THE POINT THAT I LOSE BOTH LEFT OR RIGHT HEADLIGHT ALMOST EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. THE FAILURE HAS BEEN ONE LIGHT OR THE OTHER NEVER BOTH AT THE SAME TIME SO FAR. THIS NECESSITATES TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS FOR ABOUT FIVE SECONDS AND THEN TURNING THEM ON AGAIN TO GET BOTH LIGHTS WORKING AGAIN, VERY DANGEROUS AND DISCONCERTING AT NIGHT ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE LIGHTS FAIL IN THIS MANNER ONE TO THREE TIMES PER TRIP BEFORE STAYING ON THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP. SO FAR I HAVE NOT HAD ANY SUCCESS WITH DEALERSHIP FIXING THE PROBLEM. I KNOW THAT AUDI DOES HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE HEADLIGHTS TO 4 YEARS / 50000 MILES. UNFORTUNATELY I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY ON TIME BY THE TIME I RECEIVED NOTICE OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. BOTTOM LINE, THE DEALERSHIP CAN'T SEEM FIGURE OUT IF THE PROBLEM IS THE LIGHTS, OR THE MODULE, OR THE IGNITERS. THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT, VERY FRUSTRATING. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 AUDI A4 3.2L AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING THIS PROBLEM ON AND OFF FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. THE LEFT HEADLIGHT FLICKERS AND THEN IT TURNS OFF. THEN I GET A WARNING MESSAGE THAT SAYS "LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHT". BUT WHEN I TURN OFF THE LIGHTS AND THEN TURN THEM ON AGAIN, BOTH HEADLIGHTS WOULD TURN ON JUST FINE. BUT THEN FEW MINUTES LATER, THE LEFT HEADLIGHT STARTS FLICKERING AGAIN AND TURNS OFF, REPEATS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THIS HAPPENS TO ME FREQUENTLY AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M DRIVING ON HIGHWAY OR VERY DARK AREAS, AS I HAVE TO TURN OFF THE HEADLIGHTS TO RESET THEM. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND IT LOOKS LIKE MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN TO DEALERSHIPS TO FIX THIS ISSUE FOR YEARS AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SO FAR. *TR
HEAD LIGHTS WILL DIP OUT AND TURN OFF. EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT HEAD DOES THIS AND SOMETIMES BOTH WILL FAIL WITH IN MINUTES OF EACH OTHER. AUDI HAS FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
EXTREME VIBRATIONS ARE OCCURRING WHILE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AND IN GEAR. THIS PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT NEW. IT NOW HAS ONLY 40,000 MILES. THE VIBRATION LEVELS VARY AND CAN FLUCTUATE. WHEN VIBRATIONS ARE HIGH THE VIBRATION IS NAUSEATING OCCURS EVERY DAY. DEALER STATES AUDI WILL NOT DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM AS IT MAY REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. *TR

IT THEN TURNS ITSELF OFF 3. THE MESSAGE "LEFT/RIGHT DIPPED HEADLIGHT" APPEARS 4. THE MESSAGE IS CHANGED TO A SIGN INDICATING THAT THE LIGHTBULB HAS FAILED. IF I TURN THE LIGHT OFF (NOTE: WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DRIVING AT NIGHT ON A DARK COUNTRY ROAD HERE) AND TURN IT BACK ON AGAIN, THE LIGHT WILL BECOME NORMAL AGAIN, FOR ABOUT A FEW MINUTES AND THEN THE CYCLE REPEATS ITSELF. THIS PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. LAST NIGHT I HAD TO TURN MY HEADLIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN TEN TIMES WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. MY AUDI DEALER SAID THAT AUDI KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT -- CHANGING THE LIGHT BULB DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. GO ON THE INTERNET AND DO A SEARCH FOR "AUDI DIPPED HEADLIGHT" AND YOU WILL FIND AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 AUDI A4 FROM PITTSBURGH TO VA MONDAY 1/18/09. APPROX 2 HRS INTO THE DRIVE, WHILE DESCENDING A HILL ON INTERSTATE 70 I WENT TO BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN AND THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE INSTEAD. I HAD BEEN DRIVING IN THE 6TH GEAR OF THE TIPTRONIC MODE. SO I THREW IT OVER TO DRIVE MODE INSTEAD THINKING MAYBE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE OTHER MODE. IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AS I APPLIED THE BRAKE I COULD HEAR THE ACCELERATION CONTINUING AND WHEN REMOVING MY FOOT FROM BRAKE THE CAR TOOK OFF UNTIL I HIT BRAKE AGAIN. PANICKED I TRIED TO GET OVER FROM THE PASSING LANE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO NAVIGATE BETWEEN A CAR I ALMOST HIT AND AN 18 WHEELER. ONCE OVER ON SIDE I THREW ON EMERGENCY BRAKE AND COULD STILL HEAR AND FEEL CAR ACCELERATING. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE TO STOP IT COMPLETELY. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH AND SHAKING. I IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE FLOOR TO SEE IF SOMETHING HAD OBSTRUCTED THE GAS AREA. ALL MATS WERE IN PLACE AND NOTHING APPEARED UNUSUAL. I THEN CHECKED FOR MY CRUISE CONTROL. I HAVE NEVER USED IT IN THIS CAR AND ACTUALLY HAD TO FIND THE LEVER. THOUGHT MAYBE I BUMPED IT WHILE USING THE WIPERS. THE CC IS ON THE OTHER SIDE AND NO WHERE NEAR ANYTHING I WOULD HAVE TOUCHED. I CALLED AUDI ROADSIDE AND THEY TOWED IT TO FREDERICK MD. I CALLED AUDI CUSTOMER SERVICE THE NEXT MORNING TO ALERT THEM. THEY SEEMED RESPONSIVE AND CONCERNED. THE AUDI DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. THEY SAID THEY TRIED TO REPLICATE IT. I ASKED IF THAT MEANT THEY DROVE IT AT NIGHT FOR 2 HOURS IN 13 DEGREE WEATHER IN THE 6TH GEAR OF TIPTRONIC MODE? THEY SAID NO THEY CONDUCTED COMPUTER TESTS AND FOUND NOTHING. I HAD TO PICK UP MY CAR THAT I AM NOW TERRIFIED TO DRIVE. I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM AUDI CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSON WHO NOW SEEMS TO NOT BE RETURNING MY CALLS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME & I NEED TO FIND ANSWERS &/OR GET ANOTHER VEHICLE I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR. I READ SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA SITE FOR THIS CAR & YEAR. *TR
THE HID HEADLIGHTS HAD BEEN FLICKERING FOR ALMOST A YEAR IN MY 2006 AUDI A4 QUATTRO 2.0. ORIGINALLY (ALMOST A YEAR AGO, APPROX 35K MILES) I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PROBLEM INVESTIGATED, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD FLICKER AND THEN EXTINGUISH, LEAVING ME DRIVING IN THE DARK, OR WITH ONLY ONE HEADLIGHT. THE DISPLAY IN MY CAR WOULD INDICATE LEFT OR RIGHT HEADLIGHT 'DIPPED'. IF I SHUT THE LIGHT SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION, THEN TO THE ON POSITION, THE HEADLIGHT WOULD RE-IGNITE. I RECENTLY HAD MY CAR SERVICED AGAIN, AND THEY INDICATED THE LEFT FRONT HEADLIGHT BULB WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER REPLACING IT (AT A COST OF $515), AFTER DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT A WEEK, I NOTICED THE CONDITION WAS STILL PRESENT. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, AND THEY INDICATED THE OTHER BULB WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER IN THIS INSTANCE COVERED THE COST OF THE BULB AND LABOR. I FEAR THAT THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED BY SIMPLY REPLACING THE BULBS, AND I WILL BE AGAIN DRIVING THE CAR WITH A FAULTY HEADLIGHT, WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT IN THE WRONG CONDITIONS. *TR
AUDI A4 B7 PLATFORMS WITH HID HEADLIGHTS HAVE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH LIGHTS TURNING OFF WHILE IN OPERATION. THIS HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED ON MANY INTERNET FORUMS. SEARCHING FOR "AUDI HEADLIGHT DIPPED" OR "AUDI HEADLIGHT FLICKER" WILL YIELD MANY RESULTS. THE PROBLEM MANIFESTS INITIALLY AS FLICKERING HEADLIGHTS. PROPER STATE FOR HID HEADLIGHTS IS NOT MAINTAINED AND FLICKERING ENSUES. IF PROPER STEADY STATE IS NOT RETAINED WITHIN A TOLERABLE TIME THE HEADLIGHTS WILL TURN OFF REQUIRING A REFIRING TO CREATE IGNITION IN THE BULB AGAIN. THE "HEADLIGHT DIPPED" MESSAGE TELLS THE OPERATOR THAT THE DIPPED HEADLIGHT IS NOT OPERATIONAL. A DIPPED HEADLIGHT IS THE EUROPEAN TERM FOR A LOW BEAM. ONCE THE HEADLIGHT HAS GONE OUT IT WILL REMAIN OUT UNTIL THE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM IS REFIRED BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS AND TURNING THEM BACK ON. THIS PROCEDURE CAN BE FOLLOWED TO REOBTAIN LIGHTING WHILE THE VEHICLE HAS LOST LIGHTING IN MOTION BUT DEPENDS ON THE OPERATOR'S ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE THE SITUATION AND PERFORM THE APPROPRIATE ACTION. A VEHICLE'S ABILITY TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN OPERATIONAL HEADLIGHTS IS IMPORTANT FOR COLLISION AVOIDANCE. THE MITIGATING FACTORS FOR THIS ISSUE ARE THE FACT THAT OFTEN IT IS ONLY ONE HEADLIGHT THAT GOES OUT AND THAT WITH THE PROPER PROCEDURE THE HEADLIGHTS CAN BE RELIT. AGGRAVATING FACTORS FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE ARE THE FACT THAT HID HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES ARE SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO REPLACE AND MANY OF THE VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT THIS PROBLEM WILL SOON BE OFF OF THE WARRANTY. ADDITIONALLY THE MANUFACTURE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER BULB REPLACEMENT, WHICH COSTS SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR HID BULBS, AND REQUIRES BULB REPLACEMENT BEFORE SERVICE OF THE REMAINING PARTS OF THE SYSTEM. THE COST ALLOCATION WILL RESULT IN MANY VEHICLES REMAINING ON THE ROAD WITH DEFECTIVE HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS. *TR
FRONT BI-XENON LIGHTS FLICKER AND GO OUT. IT OCCURS PRETTY MUCH EVERY TIME I DRIVE. THIS IS BECOMING A SAFETY ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY OTHER AUDI A4 USERS WHO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. *TR
THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE CONDITIONS THAT BOTH OCCUR IN VEHICLES WITH BI-XENON, WITH OR WITHOUT ADAPTIVE LIGHTING (AFS): ONE XENON LIGHT ON EITHER SIDE SPORADICALLY FLICKERS OR FLASHES AND GOES OUT. WHEN HEADLAMPS ARE TURNED OFF AND ON AGAIN OR AT IGNITION CYCLE, THE HEADLAMPS MAY FUNCTION PROPERLY OR EXHIBIT THE SAME BEHAVIOR; ONE XENON LIGHT ON ONE SIDE FAILS PERMANENTLY. I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AS THE OTHER 59 RELATED COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE W/ MY 2006 AUDI. I HAVE CONTACTED AUDI OF AMERICA WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTION. INSTEAD AUDI TECHNICAL SERVICE INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT A DEALER DIRECTLY. I HAVE DONE THIS AND WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE BULBS REPLACED. THANK GOD THAT I DIDN'T BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THIS IS CLEARLY A RECALL. I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO FILE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AS THIS POSSES SAFETY CONCERNS. BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND GO OUT - EVEN AT THE SAME TIME! *TR
HID LIGHT ON LEFT SIDE FLICKERS THEN CAN FAIL AND GO TO A DIPPED STATUS DISPLAYING IN THE CONSOLE. TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS AND BACK ON WILL RESTORE THEM. FORUMS CANNOT ISOLATE THE ISSUE TO BULB-FLASH UPDATE FOR HEADLIGHTS-OR BALLAST. JUST GOOGLE AUDI DIPPED OR HID FLICKER. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE LIGHT MAKE OTHER DRIVERS THINK YOUR FLASHING THEM. ITS A DISTRACTION TO OTHER DRIVERS. FAILURE IN A CORNER IS DANGEROUS. *TR

LEFT HEADLIGHT FLICKERS AND THEN GOES OUT RANDOMLY ON MY 2006 AUDI A4 WHILE I AM DRIVING. THIS HAPPENS ALMOST DAILY. THE CONSEQUENCE IS THAT YOU ARE DRIVING WITHOUT A HEADLIGHT. TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, YOU HAVE TO TURN THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. TO DO THIS, YOU HAVE TO STOP THE CAR SO WHEN YOU TURN THE HEADLIGHTS OFF TO RESET THE LEFT LIGHT, YOU WON'T BE DRIVING WITHOUT HEADLIGHT. SOMETIMES THE LIGHT WILL GO OUT AGAIN WITHIN A FEW MINUTES AND SOMETIMES IT IS OK. *TR

THE PROBLEM OCCURS MORE IN COLDER TEMPERATURES. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED ONE OF THESE VERY EXPENSIVE BULBS, BUT WILL NOT REPLACE THE ONE THAT IS CURRENTLY CAUSING PROBLEMS. THE CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THIS ISSUE IS A KNOWN ISSUE AS MANY PEOPLE DISCUSS THE PROBLEM OVER THE INTERNET. IN FACT, AUDI OF NORTH AMERICA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AS WELL BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN SOME SORT OF REDESIGN OF THE BULB AND A TSB HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR CARS THAT ARE LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD AND HAS LESS THAN 12000 MILES ON IT. I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD WANT TO RECALL THESE CARS ON THEIR OWN BECAUSE IT IS NOT SAFE TO HAVE TO TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF AND ON WHILE DRIVING IN THE DARK. *TR
MY 2006 AUDI A4 AVANT 2.0 HAS THE XENON HEADLIGHTS. ONE OF THE LIGHTS HAS BEEN FAILING INTERMITTENTLY FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS. THE AUDI DEALERSHIP IN SUNNYVALE CAN'T POINT TO THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM AND WANTS TO CHARGE ME $500 TO REPLACE THE XENON BULB WHICH IS NOT BROKEN. IT WORKS AFTER YOU TURN OF THE LIGHT AND THEN ON AGAIN. IT'S HAPPENING IN COLD WEATHER MOSTLY LATE AT NIGHT OR VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING. IT WORKS FINE OTHERWISE. I SUSPECT THAT THIS MAY BE RELATED TO THE LIGHT CONTROL BLAST. A QUICK SEARCH ON GOOGLE REVEALS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR WAS RELEASED BUT NO REAL SOLUTION SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN FOUND. THOSE WHO HAD THE BULB REPLACED STILL HAVE THE PROBLEMS. IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN TO ME SINCE MY LIGHT TURNS OF IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVE WHEN IT'S DARK. I'D LIKE FOR THE DEALER TO RECALL THIS AND REALLY FIX THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT MAKING ME PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. *TR
1.) WHENEVER THE CAR IS STARTED. THE FIRST 5-10 MINUTES ARE THE WORST. 2.) EVERY TIME I USED THE HEADLIGHTS THEY FAIL. TURNING THEM OFF AND BACK ON WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM 90% OF THE TIME. 3.) I WILL TRY REPLACING THE XENON BULBS, THEN THE BALLASTS TO CORRECT PROBLEM BUT I'VE READ THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX. *TR
INTERMITTENT HEADLIGHT MALFUNCTION. OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR AND A HALF OF OWNERSHIP, BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT HEADLIGHTS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED (FLICKERED AND THEN TURNED OFF), WITH NO CONSISTENT CAUSE APPARENT. THE SPECIFIC ERROR MESSAGE THAT APPEARS IN THE DRIVER INFORMATION SCREEN IS "LEFT/RIGHT HEADLIGHT DIPPED". THIS CONDITION IS BOTH UNSAFE, AND ILLEGAL - AS MANY STATES WILL ISSUE A TRAFFIC VIOLATION FOR DRIVING WITH A NON-FUNCTIONING HEADLIGHT. IT HAS HAPPENED OVER 10 TIMES, THE HEADLIGHT FLICKERS, THEN GOES OUT, BUT WILL COME BACK ON WHEN THE CAR IS RESTARTED, THEN BE FINE FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS AT A TIME. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM ON AT LEAST 2 VISITS, AND HAS CLAIMED THAT EVERYTHING IS FINE AND THEY CAN NOT REPRODUCE. THEY HAVE SUGGESTED/GUESSED THAT IT IS THE XENON LIGHT BULB ITSELF, HOWEVER IT HAS CHECKED OUT FINE EACH TIME, AND AS MENTIONED, HAS FUNCTIONED FLAWLESSLY AFTER EACH OCCURRENCE WITH MERELY A RESTART OF THE VEHICLE. NO PARTS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED OR REPLACED, HOWEVER THEY HAVE CLAIMED TO PERFORM A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS ON AT LEAST ONE VISIT. ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE (CONVERSATIONAL, AND VIA INTERNET OWNERS' FORUMS) SUGGESTS THAT THE PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AMONG A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF AUDI'S MODEL RANGE AND YEARS. *TR
OUR 2006 AUDI A4 HAS A REOCCURRING ISSUE WITH THE FRONT LEFT HEADLIGHT. IT WILL REGULARLY BEGIN TO FLICKER FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF. THE CAR WILL TELL US WE HAVE A "LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHT". TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS COMPLETELY OFF AND THEN BACK ON WILL FIX THE ISSUE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE THE FLICKERING STARTS AGAIN AND REPEATS THE CYCLE. THIS HAD OCCURRED AS MANY AS 5 TO 6 TIMES BEFORE THE HEADLIGHT WILL STAY ON. EVEN THEN IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN LATER IN THE EVENING. WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT AUDI DEALERSHIPS AND BOTH SAY THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND THAT IT IS PROBABLY JUST A BULB GOING BAD. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN THE FALL OF 2008 AND THE BULB HAS BEEN GOING "BAD" FOR 3 YEARS. I'VE ASKED THAT THEY SWITCH THE BULBS TO TEST THEIR THEORY AND THEY WOULD DO IT BUT FOR $100. A REPLACEMENT BULB WOULD COST UPWARDS OF $500. BOTH VISITS OCCURRED WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD, UNFORTUNATELY FOR US WE ARE NO LONGER WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD. HEADLIGHTS RANDOMLY TURNING OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IS MOST CERTAINLY A SAFETY ISSUE. THE FACT THAT AUDI HAS NOT BEEN WILLING TO GET TO THE BOTTOM AND FIX THIS ISSUE IS MOST DISCONCERTING. *TT

I HAVE THE A4 W/ 3.1 LITER V6. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASE, TRANSMISSION EXHIBITED BUMPY LURCHING START FROM STOP. AUDI DIAGNOSE SAID THAT'S SYMPTOMATIC OF THIS TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE COMBINATION. NOTHING COULD BE DONE TO PREVENT. WITHIN 1ST YEAR, THE CAR WOULD STALL AND COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, NECESSITATING A RE-START. SOMETIMES UPON START, AND MOST NOTABLY (AND THE EXAMPLE CITED ABOVE) WHEN DRIVING AT SLOW SPEED. (I SUSPECT THE STALL PROBLEMS DESCRIBED RELATES TO THE LURCHING TRANSMISSION PROBLEM). ON THIS INCIDENT THERE WAS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. TOOK TO AUDI, THEY COULDN'T IDENTIFY PROBLEM. I TOOK TO AN INDEPENDENT -- THEY DETERMINED PROBLEM AS FUEL PUMP. REPLACED FUEL PUMP. MOST RECENTLY THE CAR STALLED WHEN INITIATING A LEFT TURN FROM A SLOW 10-15 MPH ROLL. AS I SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED ACCELERATOR, CAR STALLED IN MIDDLE OF LEFT TURN -- HAD TO RE-START MID-TURN TO RESTORE POWER STEERING AND FINISH TURN (TURN WAS DOWN A SLIGHT INCLINE SO CAR WAS ABLE TO COAST). THIS HAPPENED AROUND 2/15. I TOOK IT TO AUDI, THE FOLLOWING DAY. THEY SAID BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THEY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE. I CALLED AUDI USA -- THEY OFFERED NO SOLUTION OR DATABASE RESEARCH OF PROBLEM W/ OTHER AUDIES. A SIMILAR OCCURRENCE WAS 8/14 WHEN I EXITED FREEWAY AND AS I ROLLED TO A STOP, @10-15 MPH THE CAR STALLED. HAD TO BE RESTARTED. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I MAY HAVE TAKEN TO DEALER BUT DON'T RECALL. MY CONCERN IS THE SAFETY RISK IF THIS OCCURS WITH MY WIFE DRIVING AND AN ONCOMING CAR IS UNABLE TO STOP IF THE VEHICLE STALLS IN SIMILAR MANNER IN THE MIDDLE OF A LEFT TURN. ABOUT A YEAR LATER, WHILE DRIVING ON A ROUGH PATCH OF ROAD AT NIGHT, THE ERROR MESSAGE 'LEFT HEADLIGHT DIPPED' APPEARED ON THE DISPLAY CONSOLE AND THE LEFT HEADLIGHT WENT OUT. THERE WAS NOT MUCH WE COULD DO AT THAT TIME, SO WE CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR. WE GOT TO OUR DESTINATION, CONDUCTED OUR BUSINESS, GOT BACK IN THE CAR, THE HEADLIGHTS WORKED FINE, AND THE ERROR MESSAGE DISAPPEARED. WE DID NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM AGAIN UNTIL A FEW MONTHS LATER. SPECIFICALLY, ON ROUGH SURFACES THE LEFT HEADLIGHT WOULD "DIP," TURN OFF, AND AN ERROR MESSAGE WOULD APPEAR ON THE DISPLAY SAYING, "LEFT HEADLIGHT DIPPED." AS A TEMPORARY FIX, WE WOULD TURN THE LIGHTS OFF, THEN ON - THE ERROR MESSAGE WOULD CLEAR AND THE LIGHTS WOULD RE-IGNITE. THIS IS NOT A SAFE FIX WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THEREFORE, IN APRIL 2009, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FROM WHICH WE BOUGHT IT. AT THE TIME, THEY TOLD US THAT ALTHOUGH THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE FAULT AND WERE NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, PERHAPS WE SHOULD HAVE IT REPLACED. GIVEN THE DEALER'S LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN ITS OWN REPAIR SUGGESTION AND THE COST (~$500), WE CHOSE NOT TO HAVE THE BULB REPLACED. THE DEALER SAID THAT UNTIL THEY COULD REPRODUCE THE FAULT, THEY WOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
TAKATA RECALL -I FIND THIS EXTREMELY DISTURBING THAT A RISK AS THE RECALL STATES "IN THE EVENT OF AN INFLATOR RUPTURE, IN VERY RARE CASES METAL FRAGMENTS COULD PASS THROUGH THE AIRBAG CUSHION MATERIAL, WHICH MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS." TURNING LIGHTS TO THE OFF POSITION AND BACK ON GENERALLY BRINGS BOTH HEADLIGHTS BACK ON BUT THE SAME HEADLIGHT OR OTHER SIDE WILL OFTEN FAIL MOMENTS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE STEERING WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ROAD FEEDBACK THROUGH THE STEERING VIBRATIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED. UPDATED 10/30/06. *JB
THE PROBLEM IS A STEERING WHEEL SHAKE THAT SETS UP A DISTRACTING VIBRATION AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 50-60 MPH. THE STRENGTH OF THE VIBRATION IS VARIED AS THE VIBRATIONS CAN BE STRONG OR WEAK AND AT TIMES, EVEN FEEL AS IF THEY ARE NOT THERE. THE DANGER IS THAT THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE AN ANSWER AS TO WHAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. IT'S RELATED TO STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. I WOULD RATHER NOT WAIT UNTIL THEN. MANY OTHER AUDI A4 (MODEL B7) OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH NO RESOLUTION FROM AUDI AT THIS POINT. IT'S NOT JUST A MATTER OF DRIVER COMFORT. THE LAG CAN CAUSE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WHEN PULLING IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC AND THE CAR FAILS TO ACCELERATE IN A TIMELY MANNER. IT HAS CAUSED US TO BECOME HESITANT WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND WE LACK CONFIDENCE WHEN PULLING INTO AN INTERSECTION FROM A STOP. IT IS CONSIDERED NORMAL OPERATION BY THE MANUFACTURER. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS WHO BOTH AGREED THERE WAS A LAG AND BOTH TOLD US THERE IS NO RESOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. WE FEEL THE LAG IS BAD ENOUGH TO CONSTITUTE A SAFETY ISSUE. *NM
EXTREME VIBRATIONS ARE OCCURRING WHILE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AND IN GEAR. THIS PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT NEW. IT NOW HAS ONLY 8000 MILES. THE VIBRATION LEVELS VARY AND CAN FLUCTUATE. WHEN VIBRATIONS ARE HIGH THE VIBRATION IS NAUSEATING, TINGLES MY EARS, AND RATTLES MY TEETH. MY KEYS VIBRATE ENOUGH TO PRODUCE SOUND AND THEY APPEAR BLURRY. MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER SAYS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT CURRENTLY, BUT SUGGEST THERE MAY BE FUTURE REMEDIES. THEY DID TIGHTEN MY SEAT AND SAY THAT MY CAR IS OPERATING WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. I DROVE AN IDENTICAL VEHICLE TO COMPARE FROM THEIR LOT AND MY CAR VIBRATED SIGNIFICANTLY MORE. THESE SEVERE VIBRATIONS PROMPT ME TO PLACE MY CAR IN NEUTRAL AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS SO I DON'T FEEL ILL. THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS SINCE MY CAR MAY NOT BE IN GEAR, AND IF I'M DISTRACTED, THEN NEED TO ACCELERATE SUDDENLY, I WON'T BE ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY. I'M AFRAID I MAY GET REAR ENDED AT ONE OF THESE TIMES. THE VIBRATIONS MAKE ME FEEL SICK AND GIVE ME HEADACHES WHILE DRIVING WHICH CAN DETRACT FROM MY ABILITY TO OPERATE THE CAR SAFELY.*JB
AUDI ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT FLICKERING. 2006 AUDI A4 WITH ADAPTIVE (XENON) HEADLAMPS THAT "FLICKER" FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS DEFECT HAS NOW HAPPENED MORE THAN 20 TIMES, AND WAS ONCE ADDRESSED BY DEALER FOR ALMOST $900.00. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, SAME THING HAPPENED. PROBLEM SEEMS TO COME AND GO. SOMETIMES 5 OR 6 MONTHS WILL GO BY BEFORE IT RE-OCCURS. THIS A SAFETY PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL REASONS: 1. WHILE THIS "FLICKERING" IS OCCURRING IT CAUSES ONCOMING DRIVERS TO ENDURE A FLASHING BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT, MUCH BRIGHTER THAN STANDARD HALOGEN HIGH BEAMS, BEING DIRECTED RIGHT AT THEM. 2. IF THIS "FLICKERING GOES ON FOR MORE THAN SEVERAL SECONDS, THE GUILTY LAMP GOES OUT, CUTTING NIGHT VISION CONSIDERABLY. 3. REPLACEMENT OF BULBS, A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE WARNED AGAINST IN OWNERS MANUAL, IS VERY EXPENSIVE, AND DOES NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. 4. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED BY A NUMBER OF OWNERS ON SEVERAL WEB SITES FOR AUDI OWNERS. AUDI IS AWARE OF THIS DEFECT AND HAS IGNORED IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HEADLAMPS ARE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ITEM, AND AS SUCH, NEED TO OPERATE IN A RELIABLE MANNER THAT IS SAFE FOR NOT ONLY THE OPERATOR OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLE, BUT ALSO THOSE AROUND THEM. *TR

PROBLEM: FRONT HEAD LIGHTS FLICKER AND TURNS OFF, UPON CYCLING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH, THE LIGHT COMES BACK. CONDITION: THIS HAPPENS MAINLY DURING COLD WEATHER (BELOW 45-DEGREE F) TO BOTH HEADS LIGHTS. ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE IN FIRST GEAR, WHEN THE CAR IS ENGAGING THE TRANSMISSION TO START MOVING. *TR
MY 06 AUDI A4 B7 2.0T IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH ITS HEADLIGHTS THAT ARE FLICKERING AND THEN GOING OUT. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS TO TURN OFF THE HEADLIGHTS MANUALLY AND THEN TURN THEM BACK ON. THE HID LIGHTS DO THIS QUITE FREQUENTLY, IT SEEMS TO BE A BIG ISSUE WHEN I AM DRIVING AND NIGHT AND ONE OF MY HEADLIGHTS FLICKERS OUT AND THEN I HAVE TO TURN MY LIGHTS OFF TO GET IT TO COME BACK ON. I HAVE HAD ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS BOTH OF THEM FLICKER OUT AND I GET THE WARNING LIGHT INSIDE THE CAR STATING THAT THEY HAVE "DIPPED". I HAVE READ MANY AUDI OWNERS FORUMS AND THEY ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS! I HAVE REPORTED IT TO AUDI AND ALL THEY TELL ME IS THAT IT'S COMMON AND THEY CAN START REPLACING PARTS, BUT CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY ARE WANTING 1,000.00 FOR THEM TO REPLACE THE HID BULBS AND BALLASTS. BUT FROM WHAT I READ DOING THIS DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, I CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY THAT KIND OF MONEY AND NOT HAVE A GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED!! *TR
