MY 2003 BMW 325I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER OF MY BMW REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE AT APPROX. 35 MPH. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY BMW. IN FACT, THE INSURANCE CO. IS CONSIDERING A TOTAL LOSS AS WE SPEAK. THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END EXCEEDS $18,000.00 TO INCLUDE SOME STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT NEITHER THE FRONT AIR BAGS OR THE SEAT RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYED. THE FOLKS AT THE REPAIR SHOP AND THE INSURANCE ADJUSTOR CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY. I BROUGHT MY COMPLAINT TO BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY SENT AN ENGINEER TO EXAMINE THE DAMAGE. HE FILED A REPORT WITH BMW AND THEY CALLED TO SAY "THE IMPACT DID NOT WARRANT DEPLOYMENT OF THE SAFETY SYSTEM". I STRONGLY QUESTION THIS DETERMINATION GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. FURTHER, MY WIFE, THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE, SUSTAINED SOME INJURY , AND IS SEEKING TREATMENT AT THIS TIME. PLEASE HELP ME! IF THEY DETERMINE THE VEHICLE TO BE A TOTAL LOSS, THERE WILL NOT BE MUCH TIME TO HAVE AN INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE. *JB
ON MARCH 2ND 2007 AROUND 10:30AM I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 BMW M3 EAST BOUND ON INTERSTATE 40 FROM CHAPEL HILL NC TO RALEIGH NC. APPROACHING EXIT 292 MY REAR TIRE WHICH WAS A MICHELIN PILOT SPORT SIZE 255/35ZR RIPPED ON EACH SIDEWALL INNER AND OUTER. THE CENTER OF TIRE CAME COMPLETELY SEPARATED WHILE THE OUTER OF THE TIRE WAS STILL CONNECTED TO THE INNER AND OUTER OF THE REAR LEFT TIRE. FROM WHAT I CAN TELL THE TIRE SIMPLY SHREDDED ON THE INNER AND OUTER SIDEWALL CAUSING ME TO SWERVE, GAIN CONTROL OF CAR AND PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDER. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO PERFORMANCE BMW IN CHAPEL HILL. I AM EXPECTED THERE TO BE RIM DAMAGE AS WELL. AT THIS POINT AND TIME NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. BMW ADVISED ME THAT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE CAR UNTIL MONDAY. I WILL KEEP ALL PAPERWORK. *JB
WHILE DRIVING, THE AIR BAGS ON THE DRIVER SIDE DEPLOYED; ABOVE THE WINDOW AND ABOVE THE ARM REST. I DID NOT GO OVER ANY BUMPS OR HOLES. THERE WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT OR IMPACT NOR ANY HISTORY OF. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. THE AIRBAGS SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED WHILE DRIVING! MY LEFT ELBOW, LEFT ARM, AND LEFT EAR WERE INJURED. I PANICKED AND CROSSED OVER TO THE MEDIAN ON MY LEFT WITHOUT LOOKING FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC; ALSO, THE AIRBAGS WERE OBSTRUCTING MY VIEW. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF, I GOT OUT OF MY CAR, AND RAN DOWN THE ACCESS ROAD ALONGSIDE THE HIGHWAY THINKING MY CAR WAS GOING TO EXPLODE. I CALLED ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE. THE TOWING COMPANY TOOK 1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES. THE MAN WAS VERY RUDE AND UNWILLING TO TOW THE CAR. MY FRIEND AND I FOLLOWED THE TOW TRUCK TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP. THE TOWER REFUSED TO LET ME TAKE PICTURES OF MY CAR. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE CAR THE NEXT DAY UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A SERVICE ADVISOR. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT "THE AIR BAGS WERE NOT ON MY WARRANTY" AND "I WOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH MY INSURANCE TO REPAIR THE CAR". WHEN I ASKED FOR A COURTESY CAR IN THE MEANTIME, THEY STATED "YOUR WARRANTY COVERS RENTAL CARS BUT WE DO NOT GIVE OUT CARS FOR THIS PROBLEM. YOU WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH YOUR INSURANCE." I GOT A RENTAL CAR THROUGH MY INSURANCE. THE ADJUSTER WAS SENT TO INSPECT MY CAR. HE AND BMW TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS "SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE" ON THE LEFT UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR THAT CAUSED A PART OF THE CAR TO COME "LOOSE" AND TRIGGER THE SENSOR DEPLOYING THE AIR BAGS. BMW CLAIMS DAMAGE TO A PART OF THE CAR I COULD NOT TAKE PICTURES OF. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD THE ADJUSTER THAT THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN MY DRIVEWAY. BMW CORPORATE OFFICE WAS NOTIFIED. YET, THERE WAS NO SOLUTION. I REQUESTED THAT MY CAR BE TOWED TO THE NEXT CITY. THE CLAIM WAS CLOSED. THE CHARGES OF THE RENTAL CAR WERE TRANSFERRED TO ME. I ALSO HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DOCTOR VISITS. BMW STILL HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE FAILURE!!! *NM
WE BOUGHT A BMW 330XI IN AUGUST 2003. IN APRIL AND JULY 2007, WE HAD THE AIRBAG SIGN COME UP ON THE DASHBOARD. WE GOT IT REPAIRED THE FIRST TIME WE HAD IT AND IT WORKED WELL FOR A WHILE - NO SIGN. THEN THE SIGN CAME ON AGAIN IN JUNE. WE GAVE IT FOR REPAIR AGAIN AND THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN REPAIRED IT AND TOLD US THAT THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN SOLVED. OUR CAR WENT OUT OF WARRANTY IN AUGUST 2007. WE HAVE THAT SIGN COMING UP AGAIN SINCE SEPTEMBER 2007. WE GAVE FOR REPAIRS TO A NON-DEALER FACILITY (ABOUT SUMMER 2008) AND THE IT COULD NOT BE RESOLVED. THE REPAIR FACILITY TOLD US THAT THE AIRBAG SENSORS MAY BE GOING BAD REPEATEDLY AND HENCE THE SIGN COMES ON. WE BELIEVE THAT THESE SENSORS GOING BAD REPEATEDLY WHEN PERHAPS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE AIRBAG IS INDICATIVE OF FAULTY WORKMANSHIP. *TR
ON HOT, HUMID DAYS, THE STEERING GETS "STICKY". BY THAT I MEAN THAT TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL BECOMES DIFFICULT BECAUSE IT "STICKS" IN ONE SPOT. IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. SMALL CORRECTIONS OF THE STEERING BECOME DIFFICULT. MANY TIMES, BECAUSE IT STICKS, YOU HAVE TO PUSH HARDER ON THE WHEEL TO MAKE IT TURN, WHICH, WHEN IT FINALLY "UNSTICKS", ENDS UP CAUSING TOO SHARP OF A TURN. I DID A SEARCH OF THE WEB USING "Z4 STICKY STEERING" AND FOUND THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM. *JB
BRAKE LIGHT MALFUNCTION DUE TO CORROSION OF WIRES WITHIN THE HOUSING OF THE BRAKE LIGHT. BMW CORPORATE IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT HAS YET TO RECALL IT. *TR
RIGHT REAR LIGHTING SYSTEM, TO INCLUDE TURN SIGNAL AND BRAKE LIGHT, ON MY 2003 BMW 325I WORKS INTERMITTENTLY. BMW ACKNOWLEDGED DEFECT IN SYSTEM IN SI B 63 03 06, DATED FEBRUARY 2007 BUT TO DATE HAS REFUSED TO INITIATE A RECALL TO FIX THIS SAFETY DEFECT. *TR
XENON LIGHTS WENT OUT SHORTLY AFTER THE 50,000 MARK. SHORTLY AFTER CAR KEPT GOING INTO FAIL SAFE MODE, KEPT GETTING LOW VOLTAGE READINGS ON DIAGNOSTICS. ONE BMW DEALERS KEPT TELLING ME I NEEDED TO REBUILD TRANSMISSION. ALL THEY WOULD DO IS PLUG THE CAR INTO THE COMPUTER AND SEE THE TRANNY READING ON THE SCANNER. THE REASON THERE WAS A TRANNY READING WAS BECAUSE THE CAR WAS IN FAIL SAFE MODE. I EVENTUALLY HAD THE TRANNY REBUILT AND I STILL HAD THE SAME ISSUE. I WOULD CYCLE THE IGNITION AND RESTART THE CAR AND CAR WOULD DRIVE FINE. IT KEEPS GOING INTO FAIL SAFE MODE EVERYTIME I START THE CAR. ITS HARDER TO GET IT OUT OF FAIL SAFE MODE IN THE WINTER WITH COLDER STARTS. *TT
PLEASE REFER TO FR DOC 04-10644. MY PROBLEM CONCERNS THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH MY 2003 BMW X5, IE, DELAYED PARK TO DRIVE ENGAGEMENT ON COLD START. ON 11-11-06 I BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVE (I LIVE ON A CORNER LOT) AND IMMEDIATELY AM AT A STOP SIGN. I PULLED OUT, BUT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT FULLY ENGAGE IN DRIVE AND AS A RESULT I CAME WITHIN INCHES OF BEING SMASHED BY A TRUCK THAT WAS COMING DOWN THE ROAD I WAS ENTERING. IN THE DOCUMENT MENTIONED ABOVE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE DEFECT WAS NOT A SAFETY HAZARD. YOU WERE WRONG. IN THIS DOCUMENT BMW ARGUED THAT THEY HAD A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN SIB 24 07 03 TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION BY INSTALLING A NEW TRANSMISSION. UNFORTUNATELY, IN JULY '04 THEY REVISED THIS TSB TO REPROGRAM THE EGS MODULE (INCREASING THE PRESSURE IN THE TRANSMISSION SO IT TAKES LONGER TO LEAK DOWN) AND NOT TO PUT IN NEW TRANSMISSIONS. I HAVE HAD MY X5 REPROGRAMMED BY BMW AND IT DID NO GOOD. I HAD A BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE ADVISOR TELL ME THAT THE REPROGRAMMING WAS A PARTIAL FIX BUT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. HE SAID IT WAS A MATTER OF MONEY FOR BMW. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. I BOUGHT IT USED. THE BMW REPRESENTATIVE, JEFF FITZ, THEN HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME IF I HAD BOUGHT THE CAR NEW I WOULD HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING A NEW TRANSMISSION. HE SAID I SHOULD THINK ABOUT LEARNING TO LIVE WITH THE PROBLEM SINCE HIS EXPERIENCE IS THAT THE NEW TRANSMISSIONS ARE NOT SATISFACTORY EITHER. I ASK THAT YOU REVIEW YOUR FINDINGS ON THE BASIS THAT BMW IS NOT CORRECTING THE SAFETY PROBLEM AS INDICATED IN FR DOC 04-10644. *JB

MY WIFE WAS IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON 07/07/06. HER 2003 325I BMW WAS HIT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE BY A SUV THAT JUMPED OVER THE MEDIAN, TOTALING THE CAR. WE CONTACTED BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND REPORTED THAT NONE OF THE AIR-BAGS DEPLOYED. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED. WE ALSO TO THIS DATE HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION FROM BMW. *NM
I WAS DRIVING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH WHEN I WAS STRUCK IN THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS BY A VEHICLE WHO WAS RUNNING A RED LIGHT. THE OTHER DRIVER DID NOT SEE ME AND STRUCK ME AT FULL SPEED, PROBABLY AROUND 45 MPH. MY VEHICLE WAS HIT SO HARD THAT IT SPUN AROUND AND SLID ABOUT HALF A BLOCK. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS, INCLUDING THE SIDE IMPACT AIRBAGS, DEPLOYED, AND THE ENGINE DID NOT SHUT OFF. THE CAR WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY. *JB
ERRATIC IDLE. . . WHEN STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, CAR IN NEUTRAL, THE RPMS REV IN SPIKES FROM 500 TO 1500, UP AND DOWN, UP AND DOWN. THE CAR NEVER RESETS TO A CONSTANT IDLE. CAR HAS BEEN IN SHOP 8 - 9 TIMES OVER 18 DAYS TOTAL. NO SOLUTION. TECH TOLD ME BMW KNOW OF PROBLEM BUT HAS NO PLANS TO FIND A FIX. *JB
I HAD A FLAT TIRE ON H1 FREEWAY WESTBOUND BETWEEN KAONOHI & PEARL CITY EXIT WHERE THE H1 WIDENING CONSTRUCTION IS ON PROGRESS JUST BEFORE 10:00 AM ON 2/2/06. THERE ARE SEVERAL LARGE SIZE GRAVELS ON THE FAR LEFT LANE I WAS DRIVING. BY THE TIME I SPOTTED, IT WAS TOO LATE TO CHANGE THE LANE FAST ENOUGH DUE TO THE VEHICLE NEXT TO ME IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. MY LEFT FRONT TIRE & RIM GOT HIT BY ONE OF GRAVELS & EXPLODED I HAD AAA TO CHANGE MY SPARE & NEEDED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER RIM & TIRE COST ME $450
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 BMW 325I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR TAIL LIGHT FAILED. THE CONTACT EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE REAR TAIL LIGHT WIRES WERE BURNED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V438000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 161,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 BMW 330I. AFTER THE CPNTACT HAD THE RIMS CHROMED THEY WOULD CONTINUOUSLY AND SLOWLY DEFLATE. THE TIRES HAD TO BE INSPECTED AND REINFLATED AFTER EVERY TRIP. THE FAILURE DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL AFTER THE RIMS WERE CHROMED. THE RIMS WOULD NOT HOLD AIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000. UPDATED 03-04-08 *BF
THE ENGINE HAS BEEN STALLING INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING SINCE 11/2004, AND HAS HAD 6 DOCUMENTED SERVICES. AFTER LAST SERVICE ON 11/18/05, IT STALLED AGAIN ON 12/01/05 WHEN DRIVING ON FREEWAY. I HAD NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE THEN AND HAD IT TOWED AND RETURNED TO THE DEALER ON 12/10/05. *JB
TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS LOCATED IN FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WELL WITHOUT PROTECTION FROM ROAD -- I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE IT THREE TIMES IN THREE YEARS. *TR
IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO FILE A COMPLAINT BUT NOW IT IS WORSE. ONE OF THE TIRES FROM COOPER THAT I FILED A COMPLAINT ABOUT BLEW OUT FORCING MY CAR UP ON TWO WHEELS. I MANAGE TO CONTROL THE CAR WITHOUT FLIPPING. DO I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL I AM KILLED OR SOMEONE IS HURT BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE TIRES. *JB
I WAS TOLD THAT MY TIRE HAD A DEFECT BUT IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. ONE PERSON TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A TIRE DEFECT BUT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SAY ANYTHING SINCE HE WORKED FOR THE COMPANY. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT IT HAD A BULGE CAUSED BY A POT HOLE BUT IT WAS NOT DANGEROUS. WHILE DRIVING THE TIRE BLEW OUT AND LITERALLY LIFTED THE CAR UP ON TWO WHEELS. I WAS SO SCARED AND UPSET AFTER I REGAINED CONTROL THAT I CALLED THE COMPANY AND THEY SAID OH WELL. I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE TIRES SINCE THEY WERE PUT ON LAST SUMMER. THEY BOUNCE CONSTANTLY BUT YET COOPER DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR SO CALLED HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES. *JB
I PURCHASED COOPER TIRES LAST SUMMER AND DO NOT HAVE 10,000 MILES ON THEM AND THEY ARE STARTING TO FALL APART. I HAD TO REPLACE ONE BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WAS DAMAGE BECAUSE OF A POT HOLE. NOW I HAVE ANOTHER ONE THAT HAS A KNOT IN IT AND I AM TOLD THAT IT IS DUE TO A STRESS FRACTURE IN THE TIRE CAUSE BY A POTHOLE.. IT SEEMS LIKE I AM BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE I AM A WOMAN AND BLONDE. TWO YEARS AGO MY DAUGHTER HAD TO HAVE ALL 4 OF HER TIRES REPLACED THAT WERE COOPER BECAUSE SHE WAS TOLD THAT THE RADIAL HAD FLAT SIDES. *JB
TAIL LIGHTS FAILED ON MY 2003 BMW 330XI. THE SHOP FOREMAN AT MY BMW DEALERSHIP EXPLAINED THAT HE HAS BEEN SEEING A LOT OF TAIL LIGHT FAILURES BECAUSE THE WIRING WAS NOT DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE LOAD AND THEREFORE THE WIRES HAVE BEEN FRYING OUT. MY WORK ORDER STATES REPAIRS WERE DONE TO DIAGNOSE & REPLACE MELTED TAIL LIGHT CONNECTORS AND WIRING. *JB
ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN PAST 2 YEARS I HAVE EXPERIENCED TIRE BLOW OUTS ON A TOTAL OF 4 TIRES ON MY 2003 BMW 330XI. ALL WERE CAUSED BY DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND STRIKING EITHER A POTHOLE OR A RAISED MANHOLE COVER. MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE ALSO CRACKED THE ALLOY WHEEL WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED. BMW SAYS THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED AND THE "WHEELS ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR HITTING POTHOLES". SINCE WHEN ARE CARS ONLY DESIGNED FOR OPERATING UNDER PERFECT CONDITIONS? TOTAL REPAIR EXPENSE HAS BEEN NEARLY $2000. THIS RESULTS FROM WHAT I BELIEVE IS A DESIGN FLAW WHEREBY VERY LOW ASPECT RATIO TIRES ARE STANDARD ON CAR AND DO NOT OFFER SUFFICIENT IMPACT RESISTANCE LEADING TO EXPLOSIVE FAILURE OF TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLIES. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY FLAW AND SHOULD RESULT IN A RECALL AND CONSUMER REIMBURSEMENT. OWNERS CANNOT VOLUNTARILY SIMPLY FIT DIFFERENT SAFER TIRES OFFERING MORE PROTECTION AS THE CARS TRANSMISSION, TRACTION CONTROL, AND ABS WOULD BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED, PER BMW. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS BMW AND WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY BOTH DRIVER SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOY AND THERE WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. THE TWO AIR BAGS THAT DEPLOYED WAS ONE OF THE SIDE ABOVE THE WINDOW AND THE ONE AT THE ARM REST. HE CONTACTED BMW AND THEY WANT HIM TO SIGN A STATEMENT PRETTY MUCH TELLING HIM TO KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT AND NOT TO REPORT THE DEPLOYMENT OR HIS INJURIES TO ANYONE. IF HE SIGNS THE STATEMENT THEY TOLD HIM THEY WOULD GIVE HIM A REPLACEMENT CAR. THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG CAUSED INJURY TO THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE AND HE SAYS THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT HE WANTED TO REPORT. *NM
I'VE HAD THIS CAR FOR ONLY 2 YEARS AND THE IGNITION COILS HAVE BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES NOW. THE EVENTS INCLUDE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT COMING ON AND THE CAR VIBRATING AND IDLING ROUGH. THE CAR EVENTUALLY STALLS AND CANNOT BE DRIVEN AND MUST BE TOWED. BMW IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE IGNITION COILS BECAUSE THEY HAVE AN INTERNAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE PROBLEM. EVEN AFTER REPLACING ALL 6 COILS THE SECOND TIME, THE PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME. THERE IS A DEFINITE DESIGN ISSUE WITH THIS CAR THAT BMW HAS REFUSED TO ADDRESS.*AK
TAIL LIGHTS CONTINUE TO FAIL ON THIS MODEL. CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, BMW, AND THEY SAID THAT EVENTHOUGH A RECALL EXISTS FOR 2003 BMW 325I MODELS FOR TAIL LIGHT FAILURE (ID NO. 11V4380000), MY VIN NUMBER DID NOT CORRESPOND TO PRODUCTION RUN FAILURES UNDER RECALL. *TR

THE CONTROL ARMS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONLY TO FAIL AGAIN SINCE THEY HAVE NOT BE REDESIGNED.
