There are 13 owner-reported engine complaints for the 2020 BMW 3 Seriesin NHTSA's database. These are unverified consumer reports and may not reflect confirmed defects.
The Active Grille Shutter (AGS) system on my vehicle suffered an internal mechanical failure (fault codes 138206 and 138224). These shutters are a critical part of the engine cooling system. Failure of the AGS to operate correctly leads to immediate engine overheating risks, potential sudden loss of power (Limp Mode) in high-speed traffic, and thermal damage to engine components, posing a severe safety hazard. The manufacturer, BMW of North America, has officially acknowledged this defect via Extended Warranty SIB 01 03 25. However, both the local dealer (BMW of Sterling) and BMW of North America corporate office have formally refused to honor this safety-related warranty repair. Despite clear video and photographic evidence showing zero external impact to the vehicle's front end or grilles, both parties claim 'outside influence' without providing any technical proof or documentation of such impact. By refusing to repair a known cooling system defect, the manufacturer and the dealer are forcing a vehicle with a high risk of overheating back onto public roads. This represents a systemic failure to address a safety-critical component under a federally protected warranty
My car was parked at home and hadnt been driven in hours. My neighbor contacted me, saying that my car was on fire. I went outside, and it was on fire, and the fire department was called. After BMW conducted an investigation, they deemed the car fire to be related to the active recall. The manufacturer (BMW) is violating the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (49 U.S Code Section 30120) by refusing a "remedy without charge" for recall 24V-536. A manufacturer is required to provide a remedy for a safety recall "without charge." BMW is offering a loan payoff (21,851.37). This current offer violated this federal statute by forcing me to absorb the loss of my 2500 down payment and accumulated equity. Additionally, Case Management is threatening to revoke my essential transportation (loaner) unless I sign a settlement that omits a verbally promised 4,000 credit buy with non-complaint conditions: it is a restricted discount only valid for future BMW purchases, it was omitted from the legal contract that I am being pressured to sign, and it places burden on me, the victim, to find a replacement vehivle while threaten to revoke my loaner transportation. This is a clear attempt to bypass the federal requirement for a free and complete remedy for a dangerous safety defect. I have attached a picture of the fires along with the fire department report, and the email thread between Case Management of BMW and me. On March 25, 2026, I was offered a loyalty goodwill of 4,000 after the purchase of a BMW from their dealership. March 26, 2026, I was told to contact my loan finance company to inquire about a collateral substitution. After I emailed the CEO and VP of BMW executives, I was then asked about what car I was interested in as a substitute for collateral. March 31, 2026, I am told to coordinate with the dealership as well because the BMW corporation doesn't coordinate with the dealership about the substitution of collateral.
Good afternoon. I have called and spoken to my local BMW dealership at Grayson BMW service department many times. As of today they report no remedy and have no idea when a resolution will be available. Filing this complaint (second formal written complaint) due to lack of this not being in any sort of "timely manner." This recall is noted as an URGENT FIRE RISK WHEN PARKED for almost seven months now. I have parked the car outside and through the winter and now getting into the summer. In looking up this recall and reading associated documents, it seems there has been a remedy to many makes and models but still nothing for the 2020 330i, and no word on what to do, advisement, or timeline on resolution. I called the NHTSA hotline but after waiting, decided to attempt another written complaint. Previous complaint #11712900. I own a 2020 BMW 330i xDrive with an open safety recall involving a fire risk related to the engine starter. The recall has been open for approximately five months, and BMW has not provided a remedy or repair timeline. I have been informed that parts are unavailable, and no interim fix has been offered. This defect presents a serious fire hazard, and I do not feel safe operating the vehicle. I am currently pregnant, which increases my concern for personal safety and the safety of my unborn child. Despite the unresolved safety recall, I am still required to make monthly payments on the vehicle. BMW has not provided alternative transportation or sufficient guidance on how to safely manage this situation.

The contact owns a 2020 BMW 330I. The contact stated while his wife was pulling into the yard, the engine overheated and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the message "Engine Compartment Overheating" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to Billy's Imports Service, where the spark plug wires, the engine oil filter, the PCV system, the hoses, the injectors, the O-rings, and the valve cover gasket were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The contact later received notification of BMW Campaign Number: 15Y150M, which the contact related to the failure. The manufacturer was contacted for reimbursement; however, the contact was advised that no assistance could be provided because the vehicle had exceeded the 150,000-mile limitation. The failure mileage was 156,894.
I started my vicheal up and turned the heater on on my 330i 2020i bmw I sat there for about 15 mins and noticed a smoke smell I stepped out my car and realized my car was on fire! No sensors went off saying car had any issues regarding coolant or engine oil or anything so I have zero idea what started my car fire Police and fire rescue was there Fire investigation is making a report an insurance representative will be inspecting From what I see online bmw was been having issues with 3 series randomly catching fire either by faulty water pump? By a short circuit? The vicheal is completely totaled my safety was at risk if I wouldve started driving and didn't notice it would've been way wrose than what happened unsure where insurance will be taking the vicheal to
Error in vehicle computer software causing check engine light to show error in active grill position sensor, could lead to engine not properly cooling. Manufacturer error.
Engine coolant leaking and took it to BMW dealer. Was advised that the issue was a oil filter housing gasket, heating control module and hose. Was advised by the Dealer that it was a common issue and happens all the time
The contact owns a 2020 BMW 330I. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle shuddered with an abnormal sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the bearing and motor mount needed to be replaced. Upon further investigation, the contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V732000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the VIN not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The Oil filter housing on my BMW 330i failed randomly while driving causing my vehicle to be depleted off coolant within seconds. If you want to inspect the part you will have to reach out to bmw of Columbus for documentation and I can provide the service records for repair. This caused my vehicle to have to be brought to an immediate halt to not cause overheating or engine destroying failure at a time where service/repair isn’t available. There were no warning lights or leaks prior to the vehicle malfunctioning all at once. I ubered to get coolant and once filling the reservoir the coolant immediately leaked out resulting in me needing a tow to the dealership. This problem has been reproduced with many dealers as there’s numerous of report of this online and I believe the dealer has inspected this part but is refusing to replace or recall this part under any type of program or create any type of solution to make this not happen again. There wasn’t any small leaks or warning lights shown before this issue spawned all at once then showing the low coolant light.
Both the UPPER and LOWER active grille shutters for most BMW models in the 5 model years prior to mine had extended service warranties due to frequent failures of the part. It appears that the design was not improved with my model year and yet my vehicle is NOT part of the extended warranty. My vehicle is only 4 years old and BOTH the upper and lower air flap control motors have failed. The motors are not sold individually, but are sold as a part of the entire shutter assembly which has a part cost of $250 - $350 each with comparable installation costs. The lower shutter assembly requires the removal of the entire bumper. Why is the extended service warranty not applicable to newer models?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 BMW 330I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE COOLANT LOW WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO RALLYE BMW (1 BRUSH HOLLOW RD, WESTBURY, NY 11590; (516) 393-0000) WHO CONFIRMED THEM THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE HEAT MANAGEMENT MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO DISCOVERED THAT COOLANT HAD LEAKED INTO THE OIL FILTER HOUSING AND THE HOUSING WAS DAMAGED. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE OIL FILTER HOUSING, ADDED OIL, AND FLUSHED THE COOLANT. THE CONTACT RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE SAME DEALER. THE DEALER BLED AND CHECKED THE COOLING SYSTEM AND FOUND NO LEAKS. THE DEALER TOPPED OFF THE COOLANT LEVEL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OPENED A CASE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,142.*DT*JB
