NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 BMW X1. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
BMW NA and its authorized dealership and self-funded arbitration program business practices and conducts are unfair, dishonest, and unlawful. I purchased my certified pre-owned car, a lease return with extremely low mileage, 25,922 miles covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Warranty and the BMW Certified Pre-Owned warranty. My family's safety has been at significant risk by the willful negligence of the car manufacturer BMW NA and its authorized dealership. Since I purchased my car, it has had material defects related to its engine, engine electrical systems, engine and gearbox suspension, steering and wheel alignment, front and rear axles, intermediate and special transmission, fuel tank, and more. I recently discovered my car's existing defects codes stored and archived by BMW, referred to as Key Data. The existing faults are considered significant by a reasonable person when deciding whether to buy this car. I would not have purchased this car if I had been aware of the defects at the time of purchase. I also discovered that BMW's authorized dealership withheld material information about my car's defects when my car was at the repair shop overnight. According to my DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry document, BMW made some sort of repair on my car for that service visit without my prior authorization and filed a warranty repair claim with the manufacturer. I have spent months and countless hours attempting to resolve my car's defects with BMW NA, its authorized dealership, and their self-funded arbitration program, BBB Auto Line. On 11/08/2021, following subsequent repairs by BMW's authorized dealership, the check engine light came on while driving on the freeway.
Opened sunroof shade back to see out of sunroof for a few hours. When I tried closing the sunroof shade it stops about a foot out and retracts backs. Seems to be stuck on one side and unsure as to why. Nothing happened it the few hours it was opened
Use car once every couple of weeks. Pressed button to retract glass panoramic roof/black liner and after it was about 2/3 of way back I heard a clicking noise, then ripping noise. Stopped retraction and saw the front of liner askew, left side having retracted more than right. Liner can not be extracted. Not covered by our extended warranty. Aside from the performance failure, this means car interior will overheat when summer comes.
The Panoramic Sunroof Shade Blind is sagging for no reason and I am concerned that it would suddenly fall off completely due to the wind or other conditions during driving, which could block my line of sight or lead to accidents. This has been confirmed by the dealer which recommended to replace the shade, that is not covered under CPO warranty and would cost around $1,900. There were no warning lamps prior to the failure.
The sunshade on the panoramic sunroof detached entirely along the passenger side of the car. It hangs down and impairs the driver's vision on the passenger side, preventing the driver from seeing oncoming traffic. Additionally the sunshade cannot be retracted for fear that it will hang down further impairing the driver's view in the rear view mirror. I am not driving my car unless absolutely necessary until this can be repaired. I contacted BMW and took the car to the local BMW dealership for inspection and a repair estimate. The inspection video can be found at www.mkvwa37.com/p/1574bg.html BMW refused to address this defect stating that the vehicle is outside its warranty period. This site has 16 complaints for the same defect with the same year and model of BMW.
The headliner of my panoramic roof has come undone causing my driving view to become obstructed. I reached out to BMW USA who said that it will have to be replaced and will cost $3,118.95 to replace it. I feel as though this should be on the recall list as I am not the only person who has had an issue with the headliner coming undone.
The sunroof shade in my vehicle had been sagging on the passenger side and when I retracted it, it bunched up and is now off track and stuck in position. I currently have my vehicle at a BMW service center for them to take a look at it. In terms of safety, I am unsure that it is a safety concern but it sure is an inconvenience.
ADHESIVE ON THE SUNROOF VISOR SHADE COMES UNGLUED AND VISOR SAGS, IMPAIRING DRIVER VISION.
Without warning, the sunshade came loose on one side. Apparently it is a very common problem and repairs can be upwards of $2500. This has the potential to be very dangerous if the shade comes completely loose or detached. It can be seen hanging down when looking in the rear view mirror and obstructs the view. The problem needs to be addressed.
The sunscreen on the panoramic sunroof is sagging because the motor has broken and it is lost tension leaving the sunscreen sagging overhead blocking driver Visibility
System displays warning to secure vehicle with parking brake because the car could roll while the transmission is in park.
The AC has this foul smell coming from the vents it is a health concern as it's a sign that mold/mildew/bacteria is growing somewhere inside the AC system and is a significant respiratory risk. It may cause or exacerbate respiratory or breathing issues and anaphylaxis with people allergic to mold
Moon roof fabric gets loose and falls into the car, causing it to block drivers view.
THE LINER ON THE SUNROOF SEPARATED ON ONE SIDE AND IS SAGGING CAUSING OBSTRUCTION OF VIEW WHEN SUN ROOF IS OPEN
In May of 2021 a service message warning appeared stating, "Transmission secure vehicle with parking break when stopped .Consult service center" The parking break was engaged when this message appeared. I took the car to BMW of Rockville Maryland where i was told the message from the parking breaking was not being registered by the transmission thus i needed a new gear shift. My car the BMW x1 only had 32411 miles at the time. I had purchase the car in 11/2019. In all my years of driving cars up to 100,000 plus mile i have never had to replace a gear shifter. A car with such low miles should not have a gear shifter issue. This is a manufacture defect and a huge safety issue. My safety was put at risk and the general public the car could have rolled away while parked bc the car did not recognize it was in park. The car could have rolled with me causing me to run into someone , another car or a structure? The manufacture warranty had already expired and i had to pay 2400 to get this issue fixed. On the BMW forum on line there are plenty of other owners of this vehicle with this very same issue. I contacted BMW head quarters and they flat out refused to pay for the repair as a good faith repair. BMW should have recalled this model and corrected this gear shifter free of charge. From my understanding its a faulty or cheap spring that is the cause of this issue. This should not be the burden of the consumer. Its not safe and its not right that BMW knows this is an issue and has not recalled this vehicle to make this repair. BMW of rockville to my knowledge did not have the component inspected by the manufacture police or insurance representatives. Please see BMW forum on this issue. https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1598332&page=2 Thank You [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
YESTERDAY (APRIL 18, 2021), WHILE I WAS EXITING THE EXPRESSWAY TO THE TOWN OF SILVERTHORNE, COLORADO, THE SUNROOF GLASS OF MY BMW X1 SPONTANEOUSLY SHATTERED INTO MY HEAD AND MY WIFE'S AND OF COURSE ALL OVER THE CAR. I WAS TRAVELLING ABOUT 50MPH AND SLOWING DOWN TO THE EXIT RAMP; THERE WAS NO VEHICLE AHEAD OF US. MY WIFE AND I SUSTAINED SOME SMALL CUTS AND I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A SENSATION OF A FOREIGN OBJECT IN MY EYES THAT SEEMS TO GO AWAY AND BACK AGAIN. NO OTHER INJURIES BEYOND THAT.
The shade of panoramic sunroof is deflected, the adhesive is not strong enough as time goes, it can’t hold the shade in place which caused the shade falling from the original place, blocked the rear view sights. Is dangers while operating in conditions like this
THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF HEADLINER ON THIS MODEL IS MADE OF CLOTH. THE CLOTH CAME OFF OF THE TRACK DURING NORMAL OPERATION, CAUSING THE CLOTH HEADLINER TO SAG AND A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN VISIBILITY.
WHILE DRIVING I OPENED MY SUNROOF SHADE COVER AND HEARD A CRACKLING NOISE TURNED AROUND AND IT WAS ALL BUNDLED UP. THE COVER RIPPED OFF ON ONE SIDE. THE UNTIMELY FAILURE OF THE SHADE BLIND LEFT IT SAGGING/HANGING AND BLOCKING MY VIEW AS THE DRIVER WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE.
THE ENGINE MOUNTS HAVE FAILED ON MY CAR. I HAVE ONLY 14 THOUSAND MILES ON THE AUTO AND DO ONLY CITY DRIVING. HAD THIS NOT BEEN DISCOVERED DURING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH EITHER THE MOUNTING HARDWARE OR THE WEIGHT OF THE ENGINE,
WHILE DRIVING, I OPENED THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF SHADE. ONE SIDE BUNCHED UP AND DID NOT RETRACT. AFTER CLOSING, ONE SIDE OF THE SHADE IS HANGING DOWN PARTIALLY BLOCKING THE VIEW.
JUST STARTED DRIVING ON A LONG HIGHWAY TRIP, 20 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE WITH VEHICLE AT TEMPERATURE, BALL BEARING FAILED ON A PLASTIC IDLER PULLY ON ACCESSORY DRIVE, BLOWING APART THE PLASTIC PULLS AND DAMAGING THE BELT, LOSING BATTERY CHARGING FIRST, THE OVERTEMPERATURE WARNING TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER ON HIGHWAY WHICH I DID. HAD TO TOW TO THE DEALER SERVICE CENTER. $1671.51 REPAIR OVER TWO DAYS STRANDED.
HALF THE WINDSHIELD GOES VERY DARK , NEARLY BLACK AT NIGHT. IT IS FACTUALLY DANGEROUS AND IF I HAVE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT MY SPEED IS GREATLY REDUCED AS I CANNOT SEE AT ALL. I CANNOT SEE MORE THAN 30 FEET IN FRONT OF ME AND CANNOT SEE TURNS AND CANNOT SEE AT ALL WITH HILLS. EVEN DRIVING VERY SLOW, 10MPH OR LESS IN A PARKING LOT THE EXTREME LACK OF VISIBILITY BECOMES 100% OBVIOUS AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. BMW CORPORATE OFFICE SAYS THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY TECHNOLOGY THAT DIMS THE WINDSHIELD, THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IS CLUELESS TO THIS AS WELL. I HAVE READ THAT A SAVVY AND HONEST DEALERSHIP CAN ADJUST THIS THROUGH THE ON BOARD COMPUTER CONTROLS. I REALLY DONT KNOW. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE AT NIGHT THAT IS BOTTOM LINE, NO ONE CAN SEEM TO HELP ME DESPITE IT BEING ALL OVER THE INTERNET WITH ALL TYPES OF VEHICLES. I WANT THIS DOCUMENTED IF CRASH OR INJURY OCCURS I WANT PROTECTION LEGALLY. EXAMPLE-DRIVING POSTED SPEED NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AT NIGHT APPROACH SLIGHT TURN OR INCLINE AND IN AN INSTANT THE DARKNESS DESCENDS AND THE REACTION IS TO HIT THE BRAKES AS YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE ON THE ROAD. THIS IS THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. I BEG OF YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, I AM SHOCKED THERE HAS NOT BEEN MORE DEATHS OR CRASHES AND INJURIES. I BROUGHT A 3RD PARTY WITH ME TO SHOW THEM AND THE REPLY WAS, "I CANNOT SEE AND I AM THE PASSENGER" "OH MY GOD ITS BLACK IN FRONT OF ME" ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS DRIVE ANY NUMBER OF VEHICLES AT NIGHT AND YOU WILL SEE. ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT ISSUE, SOME CHEMICAL ACTIVATED THING IN WINDSHIELD? DONT REALLY KNOW.
THE FRONT BRAKES HAVE AN ISSUE THAT BMW KNOWS ABOUT, AS THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE WITH 2016-2020 X1S AND X2S. THE BRAKE PADS ON THE FRONT WHEELS HAVE AN ISSUE WHERE ONE BRAKE PAD WILL WEAR EXTREMELY QUICKLY WITHIN 5,000-20,000 MILES. WHILE THE OTHER BRAKE PAD WILL WEAR AS IT SHOULD. AS THE BRAKE PAD THAT WEARS DOWN QUICKLY IS THE INNER BRAKE PAD. TO ACTUALLY SEE THE BRAKE PAD ONE MUST REMOVE THE CAR WHEEL TO ACCESS ANY VISIBILITY OF THE BRAKE PAD ITSELF. DUE TO THIS VISIBILITY ISSUE, THE DEALERSHIP ALLOWED ME TO LEAVE WITH LESS THAN 2MM OF BRAKE PAD LEFT ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS IS A HAZARD FOR ANYONE DRIVING THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL AS THEY WILL NOT HAVE ANY STOPPING POWER WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY.
THE LINER ON THE SUNROOF SEPARATED ON ONE SIDE AND IS SAGGING WHEN SUNROOF IS OPENED.
THE SLIDING SUN VISOR ON THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM ITS FRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE SLIDING VISOR MATERIAL NOW DROOPS INTO CABIN WITH POSSIBLE OBSTRUCTION OF VISIBILITY TO OUTSIDE AREAS.
THE PANORAMIC SHADE THAT SHADES THE SUNROOF FROM THE PASSENGERS IS DIPPING DOWN ON ONE SIDE. WE HAVE NOT DRAWN BACK THIS SHADE MUCH BUT IT HAS STARTED TO SAG ON RIGHT SIDE BECAUSE THE ADHESIVE THAT KEEPS IT IN PLACE IS USELESS. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM I'VE HEARD FOR THE BMW X SERIES.
The shade that covers the sunroof ripped and was hanging down covering the rear window. This happened while I was driving, so I looked in the rearview mirror and all of a sudden couldn't see anything. BMW says that this is not covered by warranty because it is cosmetic, but it seems like a safety issue to me. I know I am not the only one who has had this issue, which is why I am reporting it. Thank you
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 BMW X1. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE RETRACTABLE SUNROOF HEAD LINER DETACHED FROM THE SLIDING TRACK CAUSING THE HEAD LINER FABRIC TO CRUMBLE AND BLOCK THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FERMAN BMW (31400 US HIGHWAY 19 NORTH, PALM HARBOR, FL 34684, (727) 400-3542) TO BE INSPECTED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE HEAD LINER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY DURING A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP, THE SUNROOF SUN SHADE/BLIND CAME OUT OF ITS TRACK ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. A VISIT TO A BMW DEALER NOTED AN OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIR COST OF $2600. THE DEALER SAID THE ENTIRE PANORAMIC SUNROOF ASSEMBLY WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED TO REPLACE THE SUN SHADE/BLIND. THE SUN SHADE HAS NOW BECOME INOPERABLE AND IS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THIS HAS CREATED AN UNACCEPTABLE EXPOSURE TO THE SUN IN THE VEHICLE. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES WERE OVER 110 DEGREES. IT APPEARS THAT A METAL COIL SPRING LIKE MATERIAL HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE SHADE/BLIND FABRIC. THE ADHESIVE BONDING THE MATERIALS HAS FAILED. THE SPRING MATERIAL IS TANGLED UNDER THE HEADLINER AT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE.
FOUL, MUSTY ODOR COMES FROM A/C FOR THE FIRST 5-10 MINUTES AFTER STARTING UP. CONCERNED ABOUT HEALTH IMPACT OF MOLD GROWING IN A/C SYSTEM.
I WENT TO OPEN MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF SHADE AND IT COMPLETELY CAME OFF THE TRACK ON ONE SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK BUT TURNED ON, AS I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE FOR THE DAY.
The roof sunshade adhesive loose which makes the sunshade loose from the roof, makes the sunshade inoperable and blocking the rear view sight.
THE PANORAMIC SUNSHADE IS SAGGING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IT HAS COME OFF THE TRACK OR ROLLER. I'VE READ THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH BMW,S AND VERY EXPENSIVE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.
THE SUN SHADE THAT COVERS THE MOONROOF FROM THE INTERIOR CAME APART ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, CAUSING IT TO HANG INTO THE CABIN. THIS OCCURRED BY ITSELF WITHOUT OPERATING THE VEHICLE OR SUN SHADE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN STATIONARY FOR SEVERAL DAYS, PARKED OUTSIDE IN AN UNCOVERED PRIVATE PARKING SPACE. BMW IS CLAIMING THIS IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY, DESPITE SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. IT'S CLEAR THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. REPAIR COST IS $2,500. *TR
I DEPARTED MY HOUSE AND GOT ONTO THE WEST PARK TOLL WAY. AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW MILES, I HEARD LIKE AN EXPLOSION. UNDER PANIC, I REALIZED THAT THE SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED. I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 65MPH AND NO ONE WAS AHEAD OF ME OR ADJACENT TO ME. THERE WAS A PICKUP TRUCK BEHIND ME ABOUT SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE. *TR
SUN SHADE MECHANISM WILL NOT OPEN, CAUSING THE SUN SHADE TO TEAR. SEEMS THAT SUN SHADE IS OFF THE TRACK, OR HUNG AND WILL NOT ALLOW FOR CLOSURE ON THIS BMW X1
THERE IS A MUSTY SOUR SMELL COMING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING VENTS. I HAVE REPLACED THE CABIN AIR FILTER AND JUST SERVICED THE WHOLE AC SYSTEM TO NO AVAIL. ODOR HAPPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED AND GOES AWAY AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5-8 MINUTES.
ONLY HAD CAR 2 MONTHS AND DOOR HANDLE LOCKING SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK. WHEN I USE KEY DOOR LOCKS AND UNLOCK. I TOUCH HANDLE THE DOORS WILL UNLOCK BUT IF I TOUCH HANDLE TO LOCK. IT DOESNT WORK
DRIVER SIDE DASHBOARD GLOVEBOX POPS OPEN DURING DRIVING, HITTING DRIVING IN LEG. SPEED OF CAR DOES NOT MATTER.
I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE RELATED TO THE ENGINE LIGHT ON 9/6/19 AND I WAS INFORM THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE THAT WAS NOT FIXABLE AND ITS RELATED TO THE OCCUPANS PROTECTION. A VERTICAL TRIM PIECE ON THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR DOORS, MAY MARGINALLY EXCEED A FEDERAL REQUIREMENT FOR AN UNBELTED COMPLIANCE TEST. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE PROVIDER THAT IN A SEVERE ACCIDENT, THIS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY BECAUSE IN A ROLL OVER THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT WITHSTAND THE PRESSURE AND THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE WOULD BE PUSHED INTO THE CABIN OF THE CAR. I TRAVEL OVER 100 MILES DAILY AND WITH MY CHILDREN. MY COMMUTE IS MAINLY ON THE HIGHWAY AND I AM CONCERNED FOR OUR SAFETY. THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR THIS RECALL AT THIS TIME THEREFORE I WOULD LIKE A FULL REFUND OR A REPLACEMENT.

I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM THE CAR SHACK IN HIALEAH,FL AND IT DID NOT HAVE THE MIDDLE HOOD LATCH AND I HAD A ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF IT. IT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME WITH MY FAMILY AT 45 MPH THAT THE HOOD OF THE CAR CAME UP AND IT WENT AGAINST MY FRONT WINDOW AND IT DAMAGE MY HOOD AND PART OF MY CAR ROOF. THIS HAPPEN AROUND 6:35 PM. GOING WEST ON NW 74 STREET JUST EAST OF 72 AVE.
REGARDING "TAKATA RECALL", I HAVE HAD MANY TIMES REQUEST TO AIRBAG RECALL, BUT BMW SAID ALWAYS PLEASE WAIT, NO ROOM FOR RECALL DURING LAST 2 YEARS.
THE HANDS-FREE MECHANISM/ACTUATOR FOR OPENING AND CLOSING THE TAILGATE (MAKING A KICKING MOTION WITH THE FOOT) ACTIVATES UNINTENTIONALLY WHEN LOADING AND UNLOADING ITEMS FROM THE REAR STORAGE AREA. ON FOUR (4) OCCASIONS WHILE LOADING OR UNLOADING FROM THE REAR STORAGE AREA, THE OPEN TAILGATE DOOR HAS CLOSED (WITHOUT BEING INTENTIONALLY ACTIVATED BY ME) AND COME DOWN ONTO MY HEAD. WHILE THERE IS A BRIEF WARNING SOUND, THE TAILGATE COMES DOWN VERY QUICKLY ON MY HEAD AND DOES NOT STOP WHEN IT MAKES CONTACT WITH MY HEAD. EVEN WHEN I AM JUST STANDING WITH MY FOOT NEAR OR UNDER THE REAR BUMPER THE TAILGATE CLOSES ON MY HEAD WITHOUT ME INITIATING THE DESIGNED TRIGGER MECHANISM (SIMULATED KICKING OF THE FOOT.). THERE ARE NO "USER SETTINGS" AVAILABLE TO DISABLE THIS AUTOMATIC OPERATION. WHILE I AM AN ADULT, A YOUNG CHILD COULD INADVERTENTLY ACTIVATE THE CLOSING OF THE TAILGATE AND THERE HEAD/NECK COULD BE CAUGHT.
