The contact owns a 2009 BMW X5. The contact stated that upon turning the heater on, there was a strong burning odor coming from the A/C vents. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was diagnosed as a burning oil odor. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the intake gasket was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to the fan relay. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact contacted the local dealer and a second dealer, Hansel BMW of Santa Rosa (2925 Corby Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95407), and was informed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The mileage was approximately 103,000. The VIN was not available. The consumer stated the dealer replaced the fuel pump under the recall.
IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER UNEXPECTEDLY. THE FUEL INJECTOR MALFUNCTIONED. THIS WAS DUE TO WATER LEAKING TO THIS AREA AS IT IS NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. BMW OF FAIRFAX (8427 LEE HWY, FAIRFAX, VA 22031) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY WITH MY 4 YEAR OLD SON AND GAS PEDAL WOULD NOT RESPOND AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH DSC 4X4 ERROR ALSO BATTERY LIGHT AND HAND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. ENGINE STARTED TO ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY AT THIS TIME AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH WHAT IT SEEMED AS HALF FULL . THROTTLE WENT UNRESPONSIVE AND THE CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN . MOVED OVER TO SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE CAR SHUT OFF AS I AM TRYING TO PARK IT . NEEDLES TO SAY THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE THAT CAUSED MY CAR TO SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EXPRESSWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH NOT TO MENTION IT PUT MY SONS LIFE IN DANGER.
PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG SENSOR MAT FAILURE.
VEHICLE IS SUBJECT TO RECALL 12V550000 DUE TO IDLER PULLEY BOLT WHICH CAN BREAK, CAUSING ACCESSORY DRIVE BET TO DISLODGE AND LOSS OF POWER STEERING, ALTERNATOR, ETC. THIS VEHICLE'S IDLER PULLEY AND BOLT WERE REPLACED AS PART OF THE RECALL 2.5 YEARS AND 35,000 MILES AGO, BUT EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME FAILURE, AGAIN, LAST MONTH. BMW USA AND THE LOCAL DEALER WERE CONTACTED, BOTH REFUSED TO FIX THE ISSUE, STATING THAT THE REPAIR IS ONLY VALID FOR TWO YEARS. THE NEW IDLER PULLEY BOLT THAT WAS INSTALLED SHEARED OFF AT ITS MOUNTING POINT, JUST AS THE ORIGINAL BOLT THAT WAS SUBJECT TO RECALL DID. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE REPLACEMENT BOLT IS SUBJECT TO THE SAME FAILURE AS THE ORIGINAL - WORSE, AS THIS FAILURE OCCURRED IN UNDER 3 YEARS AND 40,000 MILES, IT APPEARS THAT THE "FIX" IS WORSE AND MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE ORIGINALLY RECALLED PART. IN MY VEHICLE, THE PULLEY BOLT SNAPPED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A CITY STREET, CAUSING A "BANG" NOISE AND THE COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING.
THE HEATED SEATS IN MY 2009 BMW X5 GOT SO HOT THAT IT BURNED A HOLE THROUGH MY LEATHER SEAT AND MY CLOTHING. THERE IS A BURNING SMELL WHEN I TURN IT ON. I'M UNABLE TO USE IT NOW.
MY SEAT BELT LIGHT COMES ON IT STARTS BEEPING WITHOUT ANYONE OR ANYTHING ON THE SEAT IT'S VERY ANNOYING AND UNSAFE I WOULD IMAGINE IF I WAS TO GET INTO A CAR ACCIDENT WOULD MY AIRBAG DEPLOY OR NOT GIVING FALSE READING THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING
BMW FUEL PUMP RECALL VEHICLE IS HARD TO START AND IT IS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. THERE IS A MANDATORY NHTSA MANDATED FUEL PUMP RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. WE RECEIVED THE OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTER. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER AT FIRST THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS NOT AVAILABLE. AFTER I PERSISTED THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS AVAILABLE BUT THAT THEY HAVE TO PERFORM A DIAGNOSTIC FIRST. A) IT IS UNLAWFUL TO CHARGE A DIAGNOSTIC FEE IN CONJUNCTION WITH A FEDERALLY MANDATED RECALL. B) THE FUEL PUMP ISSUE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BMW FOR MANY YEARS (BMW HAD A VOLUNTARY REIMBURSEMENT OF FUEL PUMP REPAIRS IN PLACE UNTIL NHTSA MANDATED THE RECALL OF ALL VEHICLES WITH THE AFFECTED FUEL PUMP.) THE FUEL PUMP SHOULD BE INSTALLED AND THE PARTS SHOULD BE READILY AVAILABLE. I JUST TALKED WITH BWM OF NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY STATED: * I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC RUN * I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE AN ISSUE OTHER THAN THE FUEL PUMP * IF IT TURNS OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP MODULE IS DEFECTIVE, THEN I WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE THIS ILLEGALLY TIES A DIFFERENT SERVICE (THAT I MAY HAVE TO PAY) TO A FEDERALLY MANDATED RECALL. IT IS NOT IN DISPUTE THAT THE FUEL PUMP RECALL IS MANDATORY. IT IS BMW'S ALLOCATION OF PARTS AVAILABILITY THAT MAY RESULT IN ME HAVING TO PAY THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V746000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AND THE FUEL PUMP WAS ALSO REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY AT MCKENNA BMW; HOWEVER, THE REPAIRS DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,025.
CRITICAL FAILURE/ CRACK OF THE COOLANT RESERVE TANK. NO PRIOR INDICATION OF LEAK. TANK SPLIT OPEN AND LOST ALL COOLANT WHEN PARKED. SEARCHED ONLINE AND SEE A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED SAME PROBLEM. POTENTIAL FOR ENGINE DAMAGE SIGNIFICANT. NON DEALER COST TO REPLACE $400 AND READ OTHER HAVE HAD DEALER REPLACEMENT COST $800.

TAKATA RECALL - WHEN WILL I GET AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE MY VEHICLE IN? IS THERE A PHONE NUMBER FOR THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN MANHATTAN?
THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT HAS A PERMANENT MALFUNCTION OF OCCUPANCY DETECTION. THE AIRBAG "OFF" LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED WHILE A PASSENGER IS OCCUPYING THE SEAT. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY FAULT, AND FAILS TO MEET CURRENT DOT REGULATIONS. I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE PUTTING MY PASSENGERS AT RISK WHILE THEY SIT THERE!
FRONT PASSENGER OCCUPANCY SENSOR HAS PERMANENT FAILURE. "PASSENGER AIRBAG DISABLED" LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES, WITH AUDIBLE NOISE NOTIFYING THAT A PASSENGER IS PRESENT AND MUST SECURE SEAT BELT. OCCURS WHEN NO PASSENGER IS PRESENT. IN ORDER TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH DRIVER ONLY, THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT MUST BE FALSELY DEPLOYED/SECURED. REFERENCE: NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V564000
WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS UP TO 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF COMPLETELY WITH NO WARNING SIGNS. WHEN VEHICLE SHUTS OFF, ALL SYSTEMS ARE COMPLETELY OFF INCLUDING POWER STEERING, ANTILOCK BRAKING, THE ENGINE ITSELF, ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, LIGHTS - EVERYTHING COMPLETELY POWERLESS. THE CAR WILL THEN NOT START FOR 10-15 MINUTES, BUT NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NO ERRORS LOGGED IN THE COMPUTER. THE FIRST 2 TIMES THIS HAPPENED WAS ON A FREEWAY AT 60-70MPH CRUISING SPEED. NO SOUNDS OR WARNINGS THE X5 IMMEDIATELY SHUTS OFF. WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO AVOID A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR SEVERE INJURY/DEATH THIS COULD EASILY CAUSE. THIS HAPPENED 5 TIMES OVER A 14 MONTH PERIOD, EVEN AFTER 2 BMW CERTIFIED FIXES. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT, WE BROUGHT IT DIRECTLY TO BMW NORTHWEST IN FIFE WA. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT EXAMINED THE VEHICLE, TALKED WITH BMW US HEADQUARTERS - THEIR RECOMMENDATION WAS THAT WE PAY $800 TO HAVE THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM CLEANED, AND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS LIKELY DEBRIS IN THE FUEL LINES. WE CONSENTED TO THE FIX AND PAID FOR THE REPAIR. AFTER GETTING THE VEHICLE BACK IT HAPPENED 2 ADDITIONAL TIMES. ONCE AGAIN ON A FREEWAY GOING 60 MPH, ANOTHER TIME ON A SIDE STREET GOING 30 MPH. WE THEN TOOK IT BACK TO BMW NORTHWEST, THEY FOUND THAT THERE WERE 3 PARTS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THAT HAD NOT BEEN 'RECALLED' BUT WERE UNDER SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY. CLAIMED IT WAS A FREE $3500+ REPAIR, WE TOOK IT HOME AFTER THE 'FIX'. 3 MONTHS LATER, THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED 1 TIME WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 35 MPH. TOOK IT BACK TO BMW NW AGAIN, THIS TIME THEY ARE CLAIMING 3 FUEL INJECTORS NEED TO BE REPLACED (BUT THEY RECOMMEND ALL 6, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE PREVIOUSLY DETERMINED NOT TO BE THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE). THEY WANT TO 'ELIMINATE' THE POSSIBILITY WITH THE SAID FIX BUT BELIEVE THAT IS LIKELY NOT THE CAUSE AND THE ROOT IS ELECTRICAL ISSUES.

THIS SUV HAS 3 SAFETY RECALLS. BOTH THE AIRBAGS ARE IN THE TAKATA AND THE FUEL PUMP CREATES AND EXTREME RISK TO ME AND MY FAMILY'S LIFE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY BMW IS AS A COMPANY IS KEEPING THESE FAULTY CARS ON THE ROAD. EVERY TIME I GET IN IT I AM NERVOUS AND AFRAID FOR MY LIFE. NOW MY WIFE AND KIDS DO NOT DRIVE WITH ME IN THE CAR. IT HAS BECOME A HUGE BURDEN. IT IS SHAMEFUL THAT BMW BUT EVEN MORE SO THAT OUR GOVERNMENT WILL ALLOW THESE UNSAFE CARS ON THE ROADS. EVERY TIME I TALKED TO BMW THEY TRY TO DOWN PLAY THE ISSUE. BUT I SIMPLY CAN'T CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND IT'S UNFAIR TO ME BECAUSE DEALERSHIPS WON'T EVEN TAKE IT DUE TO THE SAFETY RECALLS. I KEEP SMELLING FUMES FROM THE CAR AND I BELIEVE THESE CARS ALSO HAVE ADDITIONAL DEFECTS WITH THE RADIATOR TO ADD TO THE ISSUES ALREADY EXPLAINED ABOVE. TODAY THE CAR STALLED AND I SAW SMOKE FROM THE HOOD. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS RELATED TO THE FUEL PUMP SITUATION BUT IT'S SO ANNOYING AND FRUSTRATING THAT BMW IS WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY DIE BEFORE THEY WILL ADDRESS THESE DEFECTS IN THEIR CARS!!!! THE DEALER (HAROLD ZEIGLER BMW, 4201 STADIUM DR SUITE A, KALAMAZOO, MI 49008, (866) 430-1812) STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO VERIFY WHEN THE MANUFACTURER WOULD PROVIDE THE REMEDY AND REPAIR PARTS FOR BOTH RECALLS. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE OR ON A NATIONAL BACKORDER. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS NOT MADE AWARE UNTIL MONTHS LATER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V683000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) IN MID OCTOBER 2017. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED TO DETERMINE WHEN THE REMEDY AND PARTS WOULD BE SUPPLIED TO THE DEALER TO COMPLETE THE THREE RECALL REPAIRS. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. I AM WRITING IN REGARDS TO A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN / RECALL FROM BMW SI B16 0102 WHICH I OBTAINED FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE. MY BMW, [XXX], WAS SHOWING AN EMISSIONS FAULT CODE RELATED TO THE PART ADDRESSED IN THE UNLIMITED AGE/MILEAGE TSB. I WENT TO THE DEALER REGARDING THIS ITEM TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAN BE DONE AT AROUND 110,000 MILES IN APRIL OF 2017. I WAS INFORMED THE PART IS NOT IN STOCK. WHEN I RETURNED IN JUNE TO SEE ABOUT THE SERVICE BEING DONE, I WAS, AGAIN, TOLD THE PART WAS NOT IN STOCK - AND THAT I ALSO DO NOT QUALIFY AS THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 130,000 MILES, AND THE NEW BULLETIN HAS A MILEAGE CUTOFF OF 120,000 MILES. I WAS INFORMED I COULD CONTACT BMW DIRECTLY AND DISCUSS A 'HARDSHIP.' UPON CONTACTING BMW DIRECTLY, I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP. I AM ATTACHING THE ORIGINAL TSB AND UPDATED TSB FOR THE DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID ISSUE. I AM ALSO ATTACHING THE RESPONSE FROM BMW. ADDITIONALLY, MY VEHICLE IS NOW EXHIBITING PROBLEMS WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, ANOTHER COVERED EMISSIONS ITEM FOR UNLIMITED MILEAGE; AND AM NOT SEEING ANY RESOLVE FOR THAT. THE ENGINE IDLER PULLEY BOLT BROKE WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON HIGHWAY. VEHICLE IOST ALL POWER STEERING. ALTERNATOR WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED ALONG WITH WARNING MESSAGE "CHARGING MALFUNCTION". THE BOLT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPLACE IN 2012.

IT SHUTS OFF, STALLS, WON'T START, EMITS VERY TOXIC AND STRONG FUMES OF BURNING GAS WHEN I START MY CAR AND WHEN IM IDLING. THE ENGINE LIGHT UP THEN , IT SHAKES, IT HAS NO PUNCH. AFTER 3 HOURS AND 3 HOURS MORE I COULD NOT STAY BECAUSE I HAD TO WORK SO HE PUT THAT I REQUEST RECALLVWORK ON MY CAR WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. I JUST COULDN'T STAY. I NEEDED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR ACDAY THAT I WAS OFF BUT HE WAS VERY UNHELPFUL. NO ONE REPRESENTING BMW HAS CONTACTED ME YET TO HAVE THESE POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING ISSUES RESOLVED. I FEEL THAT BMW SHOULD ESCALATE THEIR RECALL RESOLUTION PROCESS TO FIXING THESE RECALLS WITHIN WEEKS, NOT MONTHS. IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG TO WAIT - ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING I AM ONE HEAD-ON CRASH AWAY FROM BEING KILLED BY FLYING SHRAPNEL FROM THE AIR BAG, OR HAVING MY CAR SEIZE SUDDENLY AT 65 MPH BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP STOPPED WORKING.
