TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V071000 (AIR BAGS). THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
BMW X5 35I 2011 AWD , I WAS ON MAJOR DEEGAN HIGHWAY EXITING AT 230 ST WHEN THE MY BMW X5 35I 2011 AWD SUDDEN STOPPED AND MY HEART WHEN TOO MY FEET . THE PANEL READ "ENGINE MALFUNCTION " I WAS IN A DAZE NOT KNOWING WHAT HAPPEN TO THE BMW X5 35I 2011 AWD AND WHY DID IT STOP ALL OF SUDDEN !!! I STARTED AGAIN AT A VERY SLOW PACE LESS THAN 10 MPH AND TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC ON THE EXIT ON 230 STREET , I MADE IT TOO THE VETERANS AFFAIRS HOSPITAL AT 8:30 OR 9:00 AM IN THE MORNING . I CALLED AAA TO TOW TO A SHOP THAN I WAS FOUND OUT THIS BMW X5 35I 2011 AWD HAD A RECALL SO I GOT IT TOW TOO PORTCHESTER BMW WHERE THE VEHICLE IS AT NOW AND DON'T WHEN I WILL GET BACK . WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY SUDDENLY CAR REGISTERED A FAULT SAYING "ENGINE PROBLEMS - REDUCED POWER" CAUSING ME TO SWERVE AND NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT ... THE CAR DRASTICALLY REDUCED POWER AND I WAS ABLE TO LIMP HOME WITH REDUCED SPEED. *TR
IN LATE DECEMBER 2014, THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT WASHER NOZZLE AND COVER FELL OFF SOME TIME DURING USE (VEHICLE SPEED IS UNKNOWN; 45 MPH IS A GUESS). THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE ANY SNOW OR ICE ON IT. IN EARLY MARCH OF 2015, BOTH HEADLIGHT WASHER NOZZLES AND COVERS FELL OFF WITHIN A WEEK OF EACH OTHER, BOTH TIMES WITH NO SNOW OR ICE ON THE VEHICLE (THE VEHICLE IS PARKED IN A GARAGE AT BOTH HOME AND WORK). THE RIGHT NOZZLE/COVER ASSEMBLY WAS HANGING LOOSELY, AND WAS SALVAGED. IN JANUARY 2015, BMW WOULD NOT PAY FOR REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY, CLAIMING THE PARTS WERE "EXTERIOR TRIM," RATHER THAN SAFETY FEATURES, AND THEREFORE NOT COVERED. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT INVOLVING BOTH WASHERS, BMW WOULD NOT ALLOW THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER TO DEACTIVATE THE HEADLIGHT WASHERS (TO PREVENT FUTURE INCIDENCES), CLAIMING THE PARTS ARE "SAFETY FEATURES." IT SEEMS BMW CHANGES THE DESIGNATION OF THE PARTS BASED ON WHAT WILL COST THEM MONEY. THE WASHERS ARE OBVIOUSLY SAFETY FEATURES, AND ARE INCLUDED AS PART OF THE VEHICLE'S OPTIONAL "COLD WEATHER PACKAGE," INTENDED TO KEEP THE HEADLIGHTS CLEAR OF DEBRIS LIKE ROAD GRIME AND ICE. THE PARTS ARE ALSO OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE, AS THEY KEEP COMING OFF UNDER NORMAL USE WELL WITHIN THEIR EXPECTED LIFESPAN, AND INITIAL RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH BMW VEHICLES THAT HAVE HEADLIGHT WASHERS. *TR
MY WIFE'S BMW WAS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE UPON RETURNING FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHERE A SERVICE RECALL HAD BEEN PERFORMED. THE CAR SELF COMBUSTED DESTROYING THE BMW X5 , MY BMW 328 XI, OUR GARAGE AND PORTIONS OF OUR CONDO ADJACENT TO THE GARAGE.
SINCE THE N63 ENGINE TECHNICAL UPDATE (AKA N63 CUSTOMER CARE PACKAGE) WAS PERFORMED ON OUR 2011 X5, WE NOTICED AN INCREASE IN ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION EVIDENCED BY THE ONBOARD SYSTEM ALERTING US TO LOW ENGINE OIL CONDITION REQUIRING ADDING ENGINE OIL. IN ADDITION TO THIS SYMPTOM THE ONBOARD SYSTEM IS ALERTING LOW COOLANT FLUID AND REQUIRING COOLANT FLUID TOP OFF. PRIOR TO THIS N63 TECHNICAL UPDATE PERFORMED ON OUR X5, THE VEHICLE DID NOT REQUIRE ENGINE OIL OR COOLANT FLUID TOP OFF AS IT DOES NOW AND WENT EVEN AS FAR AS BETWEEN MAINTENANCE CYCLE WITHOUT REQUIRING OIL OR COOLANT TOP OFF. WE HAVE COMMUNICATED THIS PECULIAR LEVEL OF CONSUMPTION ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE ONSET OF THE SYMPTOM AND WHILE DURING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE PERIOD AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS CONSUMPTION BY THE N63 ENGINE IS NORMAL AND IS TO BE EXPECTED AND TO TOP IT OFF WHEN LOW AND AS REQUIRED. AS SUCH IN ITS CURRENT STATE WE ARE NOT CONFIDENT WITH DRIVING OUR X5 ON LONG DISTANCE LIKE A ROAD TRIP FROM LA TO SF WHICH WE HAVE ENJOYED - THE N63 IS EXTREMELY NEEDY FOR FLUIDS BETWEEN RELATIVELY SHORT MILEAGE INTERVALS.
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 121 SUDDENLY THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND I WAS WARNED THAT IF I DON'T PULL OVER AND REDUCE MY SPEED MY ENGINE WILL SUFFER DAMAGE. THIS CAUSED ME TO SWERVE AND TRY TO TAKE THE FIRST EXIT, WHICH LUCKILY WAS COMING UP. THERE WAS A LIQUID DISCHARGE UNDER THE CAR. WATER PUMP FAILED AND THERMOSTAT BURNED OUT ... DAMAGES OVER 1000 USD. THIS SEEMS TO BE A THEME WITH 3.0I VEHICLES OF THAT YEAR. BMW WOULD NOT REPAIR EVEN THOUGH HIGHER CYLINDER ENGINES ARE COVERED UNDER RECALL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V521000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN AND THE ENGINE STALLED. THE CHECK ENGINE AND BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE IDLE PULLEY BAR AND BELT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,560.
I WAS RECENTLY IN AN ACCIDENT. I REAR ENDED SOMEONE AND THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY UNTIL AFTER THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. I HAVE CHEST AND RIB PAIN. EVEN DEPLOYED THE AIR BAG WAS NOT FULLY INFLATED. *TR
THE CAR WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AS "REDUCED POWER". TOOK THE CAR INTO CREVIER BMW IN SANTA ANA. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE VANOS SYSTEM FOR OUR CAR. WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE PROBLEMS BEFORE THIS AS WELL. LAST JUNE, THE ENGINE OIL HOUSING UNIT WAS REPLACED. NOW THE PROBLEM POINTS TO THE VANOS ON THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST DONE AT THE DEALER. HOWEVER, THE DEALER AND BMW NORTH AMERICA WILL NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUES. BOTH KEEP TELLING US THAT THE "PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE" AND THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE BUT WILL LOOK INTO IT ONLY WHEN OR IF THE PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. THUS, FOR THEM TO REPAIR THE ISSUES RIGHT NOW, WE WOULD NEED TO PAY. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SCAM AND CONVENIENCE ON THEIR PART NOT TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES. I WOULD ASK NHTSA TO PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS TYPE OF PRACTICE AND MAKE BMW RESPONSIBLE AND ACCOUNTABLE TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. THANK YOU. *TR
ONLY AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, WE GOT A WARNING "ENGINE HOT, DRIVE MODERATELY" THEN A FEW MINUTES LATER, IT SAID TO ENGINE HOT, AND TO STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. WE HAD TO PULL THE CAR OVER AND AFTER ENGINE COOLED A BIT, TAKE OUR 2011 X5 TO THE NEAREST SHOP IN AN EMERGENCY. THE SHOP MECHANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP AND SAID THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH BMW X5, EVEN THOUGH WE ONLY HAD 71,000 MILES. I LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE IS A RECALL AFFECTING WATER PUMPS FOR BMW X5 2011 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:OTHER FUEL TYPES:TURBO-CHARGER RECALL NUMBER: 11V521000) BUT WHEN I CALLED BMW, IT SAID THAT MY PARTICULAR ENGINE IS NOT RECALLED. THE MECHANIC SAYS THIS IS UNUSUAL FOR SUCH A NEW CAR TO HAVE ENGINE OVERHEATING DUE TO WATER PUMP FAILURE, THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

HI, I JUST PURCHASED THE ABOVE VEHICLE ON 5/13/14 AND ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER MY CAR STARTED OVERHEATING. I KIND OF KNEW THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH WATER PUMP SO I STARTED DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE TO SEE IF BMW X5 WAS ANY RECALLS AND TO MY SURPRISE THEY RECALLED NUMEROUS X5'S DUE TO WATER PUMP. I ALSO CALLED THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY CAR AND UNFORTUNATELY I WAS TOLD THAT THERE ISN'T. I TOOK MY CAR TO INTERNATIONAL AUTOS ON 6/9/14 FOR A DIAGNOSTICS CHECK AND THEY HAVE CONFIRMED THAT WATER PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I BELIEVE THAT MY CAR SHOULD BE UNDER RECALL AS WELL SINCE BMW SEEMS TO HAVE A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH THIS. *TR

WHILE ACCELERATING TO ENTER THE HIGHWAY, A LOUD POP OCCURRED AT APPROX. 35MPH. THE POP WAS FOLLOWED BY A LOSS OF DRIVE TORQUE TO THE FRONT AXLE. I BEGAN TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER AND A SECOND LOUD POP WAS HEARD FOLLOWED BY THE SOUND OF METAL CRASHING TO THE GROUND. I EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF DRIVE TORQUE TO THE FRONT AXLE AND COASTED TO RELATIVE SAFETY ON THE ENTRANCE OF AN EXIT RAMP. UPON EXPECTING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, I COULD SEE A SEPARATED FRONT DRIVESHAFT, MISSING UNIVERSAL JOINT AND THE TRANSFER CASE WAS TOUCHING THE GROUND AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE OF FLUID DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE CAR. THERE WAS A TRAIL OF FLUID ON THE EXIT RAMP LEADING TO WHERE I PULLED OVER INDICATING THAT THE FLUID WAS LEAKING AND EVENTUALLY DUMPED COMPLETELY WHEN I PULLED OVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE NEARED BMW DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND DIAGNOSIS. *TR
OON FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2014 I WAS DOING ABOUT 75MPH ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN ATLANTA HEADING HOME FORM A MOVIE AT AROUND 1120PM AND IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT ANY WARNING OR A ENGINE LIGHT WITHIN MY 2011, BMW X5 BEGAN TO GO INTO SAFE MODE DECREASING MY SPEED FROM 75 TO 0 IN LESS THAN 60 SECONDS ' EVENTUALLY STALLING AND UNABLE TO RESTART. THE CAR TOOK OVER AND WENT INTO NEUTRAL BY ITSELF AND I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE OR CONTROL THE SPEED ON MY OWN. ATLANTAS 285 EXPRESSWAYS HAS MULTIPLE LANES AND THOUGH TRAFFIC WAS NOT AS HEAVY AS IT GENERALLY IS DURING RUSH HOURS, I HAD TO FRANTICALLY NAVIGATE MYSELF OVER SIX LANES TO THE SHOULDER ROAD (AVOIDING THE MAIN LANE BY THE EXTERIOR WALL OUT OF FEAR OF SOMEONE HITTING ME FROM BEHIND). I BEGAN TO CRY UNCONTROLLABLY AND IMMEDIATELY HIT THE SOS OPTION WITHIN THE CAR AND EXPLAIN WHAT JUST OCCURRED TO THE REPRESENTATIVE ON THE PHONE. THE LADY WAS EXTREMELY PLEASANT AND DID HER BEST TO PUT ME AT EASE AND ASSURED ME ASSISTANCE WAS ON THE WAY. I THEN CALLED MY HUSBAND AND HAD HIM MEET ME THERE AS WELL. WITHIN AN HOUR A TOWING COMPANY HAD COME AND ASKED ME IF I WANTED THEM TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST BMW DEALERSHIP AND I STATED SURE THAT DEALERSHIP WAS NALLEY BMW. *TR
VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN GARAGE AT HOME AND RANDOMLY BURST INTO FLAMES AT APPROXIMATELY 2AM. FIRE CAUSED OVER $800,000 IN DAMAGE AND HOME TOOK WELL OVER A YEAR TO REPAIR. INSURANCE AND FIRE INVESTIGATORS DETERMINED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANYTHING IN THE GARAGE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CAR, BUT I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF FORMAL REPORT AND IT HAS BEEN OVER THREE YEARS.

VANOS INTAKE AND EXHAUST UNITS NEED TO BE REPLACED, ALONG WITH SOME OTHER PARTS RELATED TO THIS. CAR HAS BEEN AT THE BMW CENTER FOR ALMOST 1 WEEK. WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY ROAD, THE "ENGINE MALFUNCTION, REDUCED POWER" ERROR MESSAGE CAME ON. I ALSO NOTICED, THE CAR HAD TURNED OFF AND I HAD NOT CONTROL OVER THE POWER STEERING WHEEL OR BRAKES. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THIS HAPPENING AGAIN, LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD NO ONE IN FRONT OF ME, OTHERWISE IT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE DUE TO NO POWER STEERING AVAILABILITY OR BRAKES. *TR
IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR MY X5 HAD THE INCREASED ENGINE NOISE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON, AND STALLED ON I-80 IN OMAHA. I GOT THE CAR PULLED OVER AND STARTED AGAIN. I THEN HAD HUSKER AUTO OF LINCOLN NE (BMW SHOP) LOOK AT IT. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED AGAIN TO DATE. IN JUNE I GET A LETTER FROM BMW ABOUT THE SAFETY RECALL OF VANOS ASSEMBLY BOLTS. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM FIT MY SITUATION BACK IN MARCH. I TOOK THE LETTER TO HUSKER AUTO BUT THEY SAID I HAD TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER LETTER FROM BMW. I HAVE APPROACHED HUSKER AUTO TWICE MORE SINCE JUNE, WITH SAME STORY FROM THEM. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER REPLACED THE IDLER PULLEY BELT A THIRD TIME AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.

IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS OVER-CONSUMING EXHAUST FLUID. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS COMING FROM THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND THE LOW PRESSURE REGULATING VALVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
THIS CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN IN 3 TIMES NOW FOR THE SAME ISSUES. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND SMELL OF EXHAUST IN CABIN. THIS SMELL STARTED AT AROUND 30,000 MILES, BUT AT THAT TIME IT WAS MINOR, AND WOULD GO AWAY QUICKLY. EXHAUST FILTER CLEANED AT COST OF $400. NEXT DAY THE ENGINE LIGHT AND EXHAUST SMELL STILL THERE. DIESEL EXHAUST RESERVOIR AND HEATER REPLACED (THIS WAS A RECALL FOR SOME OF THE SAME CARS, BUT NOT MY VIN). COST OF THIS REPAIR $1,300. FIVE DAYS LATER CAR TAKEN BACK TO DEALER WITH SMELL OF EXHAUST DURING COLD STARTS WAS EXTREME IN CABIN. EXHAUST LEVELS MEASURED AND CARBON MONONXIDE IN CABIN AT DANGEROUS LEVELS. DEALER SAYS THERE ARE LEAKS IN THE EXHAUST AT THE ENGINE AND THE COST WILL BE AROUND 1,100. LOOKING AT POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS THERE HAVE BEEN MANY ISSUES WITH EXHAUST IN THE CABIN , AND WITH THE EXHAUST FLUID HEATER, AND OR COOLER MALFUNCTIONS. THERE APPEARS TO BE A FEW RECALLS ON THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR EXHAUST AND EXHAUST FLUID COMPONENTS, BUT NONE ON MY VIN. THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS THE LEVELS OF EXHAUST IN THE CABIN IS AT A DEADLY LEVEL. THIS EXHAUST LEVEL HAS BEEN HIGH ENOUGH TO MAKE ME SICK. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP. *TR

VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER (MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL) WITHOUT WARNING. THIS OCCURRED WHILE CRUISING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. SEVERAL DAYS AFTER DELIVERY TO THE BMW SERVICE CENTER, TECHNICIANS ADVISED THEY HAD ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE STATED CAUSE WAS VANOS BOLTS SHEARING OFF INTO THE ENGINE. HOWEVER, ON THE TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE SUFFERED ANOTHER COMPLETE FAILURE, LEAVING IT DISABLED. 56 DAYS LATER A REMANUFACTURED ENGINE HAD REPLACED THE ORIGINAL DUE TO FAILED REPAIR ATTEMPTS. *TT
WHILE DRIVING MY ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF ALONG WITH POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. IT STARTED AGAIN AND I TOOK IT TO A BMW DEALER THAT SAID I NEEDED A $325 SOFTWARE UPDATE. I ASKED IF THAT MEANT MY ENGINE WOULD SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING SHOULD BY SOFTWARE EVER GO OUT OF DATE. THEY SAID YES, IT HAPPENS BUT NOT ON ALL SOFTWARE UPDATES. THEY ALSO SAID SOFTWARE UPDATE COME OUT ABOUT EVERY 3 TO 4 MONTHS MEANING MY ENGINE COULD BE SHUT OFF AGAIN AT ANY TIME. I FELT I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY THE MONEY SO MY CAR WOULD RUN AGAIN. I AM CONCERNED NOW ABOUT DRIVING AT ANY HIGHER RATE OF SPEED CONSIDERING I COULD LOSE MY STEERING AND BRAKES ANYTIME SOMEONE DECIDES I NEED TO UPDATE SOFTWARE THAT I WAS NEVER INFORMED WAS OUT OF DATE. *TR
STARTED THE CAR AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH "ENGINE MALFUNCTION - REDUCED POWER" AND DROVE A FEW HUNDRED YARDS AND THEN THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED. THE 2011 BMW X5 35I PREMIUM JUST DIED - NO POWER WHATSOEVER. BECAUSE THERE WAS NO POWER, THE CAR COULD NOT BE PUT INTO NEUTRAL TO BE PUT ON A FLATBED. THE X5 HAD TO BE PUT ON A CRANE AND LIFTED ONTO A FLATBED TOW TRUCK. BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN THE U.S. AND IS U.S. SPEC (CAR WAS IN THE U.S. FOR 2 YEARS) - SHIPPED THE CAR TO GERMANY AND THIS IS WHERE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED (CAR BEEN IN GERMANY JUST A FEW MONTHS). BMW OF MUNICH SAID THAT THERE IS A BOLT THAT CAN BREAK OFF - WHICH IT DID - MUNICH REQUESTED THE LOCAL DEALER TO TAKE THE ENGINE APART TO SEE IF THAT WAS THE FAULT AND THEY CONFIRMED IT WAS. BMW IS REPLACING OUR ENGINE BECAUSE OF THIS FAULT. HOWEVER, THE RECALL AS OF NOW IS ONLY FOR THE X5 DIESELS. THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED. HAD WE BEEN ON THE AUTOBAHN WHERE THERE AREN'T MANY SPEED LIMIT AREAS, THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FATAL CRASH IF SOMEONE GOING 100+MPH RAMMED BEHIND US FROM OUR CAR DYING OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. AT 16,000 MILES THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT NEED A NEW ENGINE. *TR
SATURDAY DECEMBER 29, 2012 I GET INTO MY 2011 X5 AS I PULLED OUT FROM MY DRIVEWAY THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON WITH A MESSAGE " ENGINE MALFUNCTION REDUCE POWER". LIFE QUALITY GAVE ME A HARD TIME TO BEGIN WITH TO GET THE CAR IN CLAIMING THEY WERE BOOKED WITH APPOINTMENTS. AFTER CALLING CUSTOMER RELATIONS AT HEADQUARTERS, I GET A CALL FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER TO BRING IN THE CAR. I HAD ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TOW THE CAR, WHEN THE CAR ARRIVE TO THE DEALER MY CAR ADVISOR CALLS ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE, WAS THE VEHICLE INVOLVE IN CRASH, DID HIT A POT HOLE, BASICALLY LOOKING FOR ALL TYPE OF EXCUSES. I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT AND ASK THAT THESE MODELS BE REVIEWED SINCE IT APPEARS TO HAVE MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS. *TR

WHEN DROVE IT ON A LOCAL STREET, THE CAR SUDDENLY MADE VERY LOUD NOISE WITHOUT ANY SIGN. AFTER CAR TOWED TO BMW DEALER, THE ENGINEER FOUND THE REASON AS DESCRIBABLE AS: FLYWHEEL BOLTS ARE INCORRECT AND NOT HOLDING THE FLYWHEEL TIGHTLY IN PLACE.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,000.
OUR 2011 BMW X5D (DIESEL) STARTED HAVING STEERING ISSUES IN JUN OF 2012. MULTIPLE REPAIR ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. LATER IT WAS INVOLVED IN A LOW SPEED CRASH, INJURING THE DRIVER IN DEC 2012 DUE TO A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THIS WAS JUST MONTHS BEFORE ISSUING A RECALL FOR THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM ALTHOUGH BMW IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS BEFORE THE INITIAL PROBLEM WAS NOTICED. THE VEHICLE STILL TO THIS DAY HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING, DIFFICULT LOW SPEED MANEUVERS AND UNUSUAL TIRE WEAR. WE DO HAVE A RECORDING OF A BMW OF NORTH AMERICA MASTER TECHNICIAN ADMITTING TO THE PROBLEM THAT BMW REFUSES TO CORRECT. IN FACT BMW REFUSES TO EVEN PERFORM WORK ON OUR VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH IT'S ADVERTISED AS "NO MAINTENANCE FOR 4YEARS/50,000 MILES" THIS IS AT ANY DEALERSHIP WE HAVE GONE TO DUE TO A NOTE IN THE DATABASE FROM BMW OF NORTH AMERICA. ALSO VEHICLE SERVICE HISTORY HAS BEEN FRAUDULENTLY ERASED FROM THEIR DATABASE AND BMW REFUSES TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE WHICH WAS PURCHASED NEW IN 2010 AND IS STILL UNDER FULL FACTORY WARRANTY. I OWN A 2011 BMW X5 35I PREMIUM. I FIND IT INEXCUSABLE TO HAVE BRAKE DUST CONTINUALLY RUINING MY WHEELS, WHICH DEALER STATES THERE IS NO RESOLUTION. 2012 BMW X5. UPON ENGINE START UP WHEN COLD, THE ENGINE SURGES EXCESSIVELY. IF THE TRANSMISSION IS ENGAGED DURING THE SURGING (FLUCTUATING RPM) THE VEHICLE LURCHES FORWARD/REVERSE CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND POTENTIAL ACCIDENT. *KB

CAR AGAIN DIED WHILE DRIVING AT SPEED ON HIGHWAY SEVERAL WEEKS LATER. BMW STATED THAT THERE WAS LOSS OF ENGINE COMPRESSION. THEN, STATED THAT FUEL INJECTORS WERE FAULTY. THEN, CLAIMED THAT IT WAS DUE TO "BAD GAS" AND/OR SUGAR IN THE GAS TANK. *TR
TAKATA RECALL THIS DEFECTIVE ITEM REMAINS UNFIXED. MY FAMILY IS SUBJECT TO "SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH" BECAUSE THERE IS NOT SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE FOR THE ISSUE TO BE RESOLVED. CALLS TO BMW HAVE NOT HELPED, THEY REMAIN CONTENT TO SAY THAT THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. THE OFFER NO HELP, SUCH AS HONDA MAY BE DOING. TAKATA APPEARS TO BE UNDER NO PRESSURE TO RESOLVE. 07/31/2011: 2011 BMW X5D, WITH 10,500 MILES, ALL 4 TIRES WERE INFLATED BY DEALER AT 40PSI; FOUR WEEKS LATER THE REAR TIRES WERE AT 35PSI, BUT BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE AT 22PSI. THE TPMS WAS SHOWING GREEN ON ALL FORU TIRES, DID NOT GIVE ANY WARNING. CALLED BMWUSA AND THEY SAID THAT IF IT IS GREEN IT SAFE TO DRIVE. WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ALL THEY DID WAS CHECK THE PRESSURE AND REINFLATE TO 40PSI. THERE MIGHT BE PEOPLE DRIVING AND LOOKING AT THEIR TPMSS SHOWING ALL 4 TIRES ARE GREEN, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY UNDERINFLATED. I CALLED BERU, THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE TPMS PLACED ON BMWS, THEY SAID THAT THIS WAS A COST SAVING MEASURE FOR BMW. I THINK PEOPLE WILL BE WILLING TO SEE THE TIRES PSI, RATHER THAN JUST GREEN TIRES SIGNIFYING "SUPPOSEDLY GOOD TIRE PRESSURE." *TR

ALSO, AN ENGINEER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND PROVIDED NO RESOLUTIONS. THE VEHICLE HAD REMAINED AT THE DEALER FOR SIX WEEKS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,783.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. THE CONTACT OBSERVED EXCESSIVE RUST AND CORROSION WITHIN THE FUEL TANK, EXHAUST SYSTEM AND THE ATTACHING COMPONENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE OWNER WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR EXPENSES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT SMOKE EMITTED FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOPPED. THE CONTACT EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF OIL LOSS IN THE RESERVOIR. THE CONTACT THEN ADDED MORE OIL ACCORDINGLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO REFUSED TO MEASURE THE OIL MANUALLY PER THE CONSUMERS REQUEST, THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REIMBURSED THE CONSUMER FOR TWO DAYS OF MOTEL, FOOD AND TOWING COSTS. UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,000. UPDATED 3/11/13 *CN BMW OFFERED TO BUY THE VEHICLE BACK, BUT LATER CHANGED THEIR MIND. THE CASE WENT TO COURT, AND THE JUDGE RULED THE OFFER WAS NOT BINDING. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD RUN HOT, AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR.
