2017-2019 model year Chevrolet Bolt EVs were recalled in November 2020 for battery fires (NHTSA Recall No. : 20V-701, Manufacturer Recall No. : N202311730). A temporary "fix" was released in 2021 which limited the maximum charge of the car's battery to 90%. This was followed with a "final fix" software update which returned full charging capabilities and added battery cell monitoring software. This software supposedly could detect faulty battery cells. The recall was considered resolved. More recently, at least two more Bolt EVs spontaneously combusted; these vehicles had received the final recall software update, and were not charged over 90%. This means two things; limiting the maximum charge level of the car did not protect consumers, and the final recall repair also did not protect consumers. Homes have been damaged, cars destroyed, people injured (no deaths so far, fortunately) and Bolt owners live in a constant state of unease. A new recall has been issued: Manufacturer Recall Number: N212343880, NHTSA Recall Number: 21V560. In addition, Bolt owners have been instructed to park their cars outside, charge only during the day (also outside), and maintain a charge level between ~30-90% at all times. This leaves us with ~36kWh, approximately 90-150 miles of range in warm weather (as opposed to the advertised 239 miles on a full charge). All of these restrictions are simply not possible for many people, especially those of us who live in cold weather environments, which vastly limits the range of the car. Others have no choice but to park their car in underground parking garages, which puts hundreds of people at risk. The new recall does not currently have a remedy, but it states faulty battery cells/assemblies or packs will be replaced. GM failed to detect faulty cells the first time after months of investigation, and I do not believe they will successfully detect them now. I urge NHTSA to force GM's hand: replace the entire battery pack, or buy back the vehicles.
Sway bar components and steering making noises and excessive movement. These issues were noticeable just after 3yr 36k limited warranty had expired (approx 23k miles on vehicle). Items later found to be faulty by dealership, GM gave significant pushback and offered limited assistance with repairs and claims the treat items on case by case basis. I have read multiple reports of these repairs being performed under warranty and with a few customers out of warranty with similar symptoms. It’s time to investigate Sway Bar and Steering turn signal switch and related component issues in Bolt EV 2017-19, possibly later and require GM to issue a recall.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number 21V560000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacture had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact also contacted a dealer and it was confirmed that part was not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts are not available.
GM has now issued a second recall on my 2017 Bolt EV battery, due to fire. Current guidance from GM/Chevrolet is to not leave the vehicle unattended while charging and to leave outside. This is not workable for me, as I'm not able to charge my vehicle outside and it's not sustainable to leave my car charging within my garage. I would like to participate in GM's "Buy Back" program, whereby they'll buy my vehicle back from me at original purchase price - - or - - offer me options of moving to a similar model/trim line in the current 2022 model year. The fire risk introduced with the vehicle puts me, my family and my property at significant risk and I am unable to use the vehicle in the manner it was originally designed. I'm unable to charge the battery or get appropriate mileage based on the initial design.
Touch screen unresponsive, freezes with rear camera streaming — incredible distraction, system restarts at random. Loss of functionality to HVAC controls in winter caused window to fog and created dangerous driving scenario. Pop sound in speakers then loss of power to infotainment system periodically. I have had dealership replace sway bar and steering due to defective parts. GM not as cooperative as they could be and process lengthy. Now GM tech says chip and screen need replacement. Battery recall has compounded my concerns over safety of Bolt EV.

INSTALLED CHEVROLET PREMIUM ALL-WEATHER FLOOR LINERS P/N: 42686568. WHILE PASSING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE UNDER THE LINER. UNABLE TO SHIFT TO NEUTRAL AND WITH MINIMAL SLOWING FROM PRESSING THE BRAKES, I HAD TO REACH DOWN AND TUG ON THE MAT UNTIL IT DISLODGED FROM THE PEDAL. I GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND EXAMINED THE LINER FINDING THAT ONE OF THE SECURING CLIPS HAD COME UNATTACHED (LIKELY FROM TUGGING ON IT). I REATTACHED AND VERIFIED CORRECT MAT INSTALLATION. LATER WHILE PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY THE ACCELERATOR BECAME STUCK AGAIN CAUSING UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION. EXAMINING THE MAT AFTERWARDS, THE SECURING CLIPS WERE STILL ATTACHED CORRECTLY. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: THE CLIPS THAT SECURE THE FLOOR MAT/LINER ARE ONLY ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE CARPET AND NOT RIGIDLY AFFIXED. WHEN CORRECTLY INSTALLED THE LIP OF THE LINER RISES UP AND ENDS WITH ALMOST NO CLEARANCE TO THE GAS PEDAL, THEN WITH ONLY A SLIGHT MOVEMENT OF THE LINER IT CAN ENTRAP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. OVER TIME WITH FORWARD FOOT PRESSURE ON THE LINER, THERE IS JUST ENOUGH MOVEMENT IN THE LINER AND CLIPS TO ALLOW IT TO SHIFT SLIGHTLY FORWARD AND TO THE RIGHT CAUSING AN INTERFERENCE FIT WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. IT APPEARS THAT WHEN BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS ARE PRESSED AT THE SAME TIME, THE POWER TO THE ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTINUES TO BE APPLIED. TESTING THIS AFTERWARD SHOWED THAT WITH A FOOT ON BOTH PEDALS, THE ELECTRIC POWER METER STILL SHOWED POWER BEING APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE BRAKING PERFORMANCE WAS SEVERELY DIMINISHED. DURING AN EMERGENCY, A QUICK FLICK OF THE SHIFTER FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL DOES NOT WORK. THE SHIFTER MUST BE HELD FOR A LONGER DURATION, WHICH IS NOT INTUITIVE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY AND BOTH HANDS ARE ON THE WHEEL.
BRAKES STARTED MAKING NOISE AT 27,000 MILES . WE DRIVE IN L MODE NEVER TOUCH THE BRAKES. DEALERSHIP SAID METAL TO METAL ON ALL 4 WHEELS. I SAID THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE WE DON'T USE THE BRAKES . THEY WOULDN'T CONSIDER A WARRANTY PROBLEM. RAPED ME FOR NEW BRAKES. $800.
The steering on my 2017 Chevy bolt does not return to center after making a turn (left or right). If you do a search, this is a common issue with Chevy Bolts and Chevy wants lots of money to fix it. I did pay Chevy to do do a software update (Service Bulletin #17-NA-148) which should have made the situation better but it made it (if anything) worse. I believe there is an issue with the steering gear and Chevy should issue a recall. THE DRIVERS DOOR WINDOW HAS GOTTEN VERTICAL SCRATCHES ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE GLASS. DEALER SAID A WIRING HARNESS CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THEY FIXED IT UNDER WARRANTY. (I WOULDN'T COMPLAIN EXCEPT THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TO MY OTHER 2018 BOLT)
My 2017 Chevy Bolt has been recalled for the second time due to a defect in the battery. GM attempted to solve the hardware problem with a software fix, with the predictable result that cars are still exploding and burning down people's homes. The lack of transparency from GM is disturbing, considering that the defect puts my life at risk and makes the car unusable for its intended purpose, which is to drive long range during the day and charge overnight. I have called my local chevy dealer who I bought the car from multiple times and left messages, but their service department does not pick up the phone when I call them and do not respond to my messages.
THERE ARE CONSTANT STRONG KNOCKS 8 TIMES PER SECOND IN IBOOSTER. KNOCKS ARE HEARD IN THE CABIN AND UNDER THE HOOD. DISAPPEAR ONLY WHEN YOU PRESS THE TOMOZ PEDAL.
The steering gets stiffer and stiffer and won't return to center after a turn. This should be fixed by GM. The car has had the issue for a long time and slowly gets worse,\.
Faulty steering rack. Steering wheel does not return to center while in turn, intersection, etc. requires manual turns of wheel. Multiple steering engineering design flaws including U-joints vertical position of connectors with sway to harness, as well as column angle. Bad design.
I'm upset that this car doesn't have the range it's supposed to because of battery defects and recalls
I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITH CONCERNS OF A FAULTY BATTERY. THE BATTERY SUDDENLY STOPPED CHARGING FULLY. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER TWICE THAT THE BATTERY WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I OPENED A CLAIM WITH GM REGARDING THIS INCIDENT, ASKING THEM TO REPLACE THE BATTERY, SINCE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND THERE WAS CLEARLY AN ISSUE. AFTER MONTHS OF BACK-AND-FORTH, GM CLOSED MY CASE STATING IT WAS 'NORMAL DEPRECIATION' OF THE BATTERY. ONE WEEK AFTER THEY CLOSED MY CASE, THE BATTERY SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE WHILE CHARGING IN MY GARAGE OVERNIGHT. IT TOTALED 2 VEHICLES, CHARRED EVERYTHING IN MY GARAGE, AND CAUSED SUCH SEVERE SMOKE DAMAGE THAT ALMOST EVERYTHING IN MY HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THE FIRE ORIGINATED FROM THE TRUNK AREA, WHERE THE BATTERY IS. MY FAMILY IS DISPLACED WHILE REPAIRS ARE BEING DONE TO MY HOME, AT A TUNE OF APPROXIMATELY $200,000 AT THIS POINT. WE LOST APPROXIMATELY $105,000 IN CONTENTS, AS WELL AS THE 2 TOTALED VEHICLES ($75,000).
2017 BOLT EV WAS PARKED NOSE INTO GARAGE PLUGGED INTO WALL CHARGER CHARGING UNATTENDED WITH MY PHONE SET TO ALERT ME WHEN ESTIMATED TO BE FULLY CHARGED. WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE HOUSE TO UNPLUG CHARGER THERE WAS FIRE VISIBLE UNDER BACK SEAT IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF VEHICLE. CALLED 911 AND BY THE TIME POLICE AND FIRE RESPONDED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES ENTIRE BATTERY UNDER VEHICLE ENGULFED CAR IN FLAMES CAUSING GARAGE FIRE WHICH DESTROYED GARAGE AND ALL IT CONTENTS.JUST LEARNED FROM CARFAX THAT GM ISSUED RECALL NOVEMBER 15 FOR POTENTIAL BATTERY FIRES WHEN AT OR NEAR FULL CHARGE.
UNLESS THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THERE IS A RAPID TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER UPON OPENING THE DOOR, EVEN WITHOUT ENGAGING THE START BUTTON. THIS SOUND CONTINUES WHETHER THE CAR IS STATIONARY OR MOVING UNDER ALL TRAVELING OR STATIONARY CONDITIONS UNLESS THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED SLIGHTLY. WE FIRST BECAME AWARE, REALLY NOTICEABLE, ABOUT IT UPON OPENING THE CAR DOOR IN JULY, 2020.
THE STEERING IS BINDING AND STICKY. THE CAR WILL NOT RE-CENTER IT SELF IN THE ROAD AFTER MAKING A TURN. ALL OF THE OIL APPARENTLY LEAKED OUT OF THIS SEALED RACK AND PINION AND IS NOW DRY AND YOU HAVE TO USE EXTRA EFFORT TO KEEP THE CAR CENTERED WHILE DRIVING AND TO MAKE TURNS AND BE READY TO FIGHT IT BACK TO CENTER ONCE THE TURN IS COMPLETE. TOOK THE CAR TO GM AND THEY SOLD ME A SET OF TIRES BECAUSE THEY SAID THE BRAND I BOUGHT AT WALMART 6 MONTHS AGO WAS NOT RECOMMENDED AND SAID ONLY MICHELIN ENERGY TIRES WERE RECOMMENDED. BOUGHT THE TIRES AND DEALER CALLED AND SAID, WELL THAT DIDN'T FIX IT, YOU NEED A STEERING RACK REPLACEMENT. BY THE WAY, YOU STILL OWE US FOR THE TIRES THAT WE RECOMMEND THAT DIDN'T FIX YOUR STEERING ISSUE!
I am having problems with the steering rack. While driving straight, the front wheels shake. While turning, the steering wheel does not return to center and it feels like it sticks in place . This makes for some dangerous turning situations. The steering rack is still in the car and available for inspection. I took the car to the dealer and an independent shop when the problem was intermittent. Now it is constant. There are no warning lights illuminate or messages on the car regarding the steering. The problem first appeared around 2-3 years ago.
There is an intermittent RAPID TAPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKE BOOSTER upon opening a door, or releasing the brake pedal (standing still or while in motion), or unplugging the power cord. The behavior is more frequent on colder days. This tapping noise typically continues for nearly a minute. Tapping the brake pedal causes the noise to cease momentarily. Very slight movement on the brake pedal can sometimes stop the tapping. This behavior began more than a year ago. I took the car to the Chevrolet dealer and was told a firmware update would be provided in Q1 2021. I am concerned the behavior may be an early warning sign of brake system failure, which could occur while driving.
MAIN FUZE BLEW. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAS HAPPENED. DEALER DID NOT LOOK FOR THE CAUSE LAST YEAR, JUST REPLACED THE FUSE. THIS TIME THEY SAY THEY WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED IT TO TRIP AGAIN. USING THE PORTABLE CHARGING CORD THAT CAME WITH THE CAR @ 8 AMPS. PLUGGED INTO A STANDARD 110 OUTLET. THIS IS THE MAIN BREAKER IN THE VEHICLE. THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN PLUGGED IN FOR A WEEK AND WAS AT 90% + CHANGE WHEN THE MAIN BREAKER IN THE CAR BLEW WHILE I WAS DOING ABOUT 25 MPH.
HELLO MY VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TWICE WHILE DC FAST CHARGING FROM AN ELECTRIFY AMERICA CHARGING STATION. THE FIRST TIME THE SHIFTING HANDLE WAS REPLACED AND THE SECOND TIME SOFTWARE WAS REINSTALLED. HOWEVER I BELIEVE THE COULD BE AN ISSUE IN THE BATTERIES THAT THE DEALERSHIP TEST EQUIPMENT IS NOT DETECTING. THE ELECTRIFY AMERICA CHARGING STATION WOULD DISPLAY A 'ISOLATION TEST FAILURE' MESSAGE.
2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV has intermittent master sound. All vehicle sounds (indicators, warning sounds, GPS navigation, radio) will turn off completely for between 0.5 and 10 seconds before returning to normal. Frequency is random with no logical correlations aside from a pattern of high occurrences followed by a day or two of low occurrences. Dealer has been notified twice and unable to solve issue both times.
WHILE SLOWING TO MAKE A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND WOULD NOT STOP. THE CAR STRUCK THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF IT A COUPLE OF TIMES AND CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE.
GOT THE MESSAGE: PROPULSION POWER IS REDUCED I COULD START THE CAR BUT NOT SHIFT GEAR. GOT THE ERROR "CANNOT SHIFT GEAR CONDITIONS NOT RIGHT
WHILE DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 45 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR JOLTED AND LIGHTS IN THE CAR WENT ON. TRANSMISSION LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, STABILITY TRACK LIGHT, SERVICE PARK ASSIST LIGHT, SERVICE STEERING LIGHT, ETC. THIS CAUSED ME A CHALLENGE IN DRIVING THE CAR ON A TWO LANE ROAD BECAUSE THE STEERING BECAME MORE DIFFICULT AND THERE WAS NOT A BIG ENOUGH SHOULDER TO PULL ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. BRING CAR INTO DEALER AND FIND THAT THE FRONT WHEEL BEARING AND HUB NEED TO BE REPLACED, THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED WAS WHEN THE BRAND NEW CAR WAS ABOUT A YEAR OLD (WE DID HAVE 18311 MILES ON THE VEHICLE). ABOUT A YEAR LATER (15 MONTHS LATER), THE SAME INCIDENT OCCURRED AND THE SAME PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. HOWEVER, WE WERE OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY DUE TO MILEAGE AND THEY NO LONGER WANTED TO REPLACE THE BROKEN PARTS UNDER WARRANTY. THE SAME PARTS SHOULD NOT GO OUT YEAR AFTER YEAR ON A BRAND NEW CAR! WE ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON PARTS AND WERE TOLD NO. THE PART NUMBERS ON BOTH INVOICES - SL-N-WASHER (04710-C); SL-N- NUT (06056-BC); SL-N-WASHER (06056-C); SL-*-N- BEARING (060311-C)
The driver's side blind spot monitor never worked well from new with false positives, and by the end of 2019 it just stayed on 90% of the time. The passenger side monitor generally worked better, but still had false positive signals on occasion. There is a TSB (17-NA-097) for this issue. With Covid, and unhelpful dealerships, it took 4 tries at different dealerships before it was finally fixed recently. The film over the both sensors was non-functional, just as described in the TSB. As there is a TSB, this is a known issue for this vehicle from the factory.
The steering wheel/vehicle will not return to the center position after a turn. It requires manual effort to turn the steering wheel/vehicle back to the center position. If not, the vehicle will continue turning, thus creating an unsafe environment.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the steering wheel would not properly return to center. Additionally, the steering wheel was difficult to turn in either direction. The was taken to the local dealer who indicated that the steering failure was caused by faulty gears within the steering rack. The contact was informed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
When moving thru curved roads or turns the steering has begun to stick in position AND not return to center upon completing the turn. This is NOT normal and has caused risk of a crash. NO warning from the cars information center on any malfunction or service light illuminated. Car has had alignment from Chevrolet dealer after tire replacement at 40k miles. No issues were reported. Condition has continued and has not been taken for inspection or repair. Owner has now gotten used to it and just compensates. Suspected steering rack binding as others have reported.

MY 2017 CHEVY BOLT LOST PROPULSION WHILE IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS IN LOS ANGELES IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT WARNING FROM EITHER ON STAR OR THE VEHICLE. THE BATTERY INDICATED APPROXIMATELY AN 60% CHARGE. THE VEHICLE IS NOW AT EL CAMINO CHEVROLET IN MONTEREY PARK, CA., WAITING ON SERVICE.
WHILE IN MOTION THE CAR BEGAN TO ERRATICALLY SPEED UP & SLOW DOWN WITHOUT THE DRIVER DEPRESSING EITHER THE ACCELERATION PEDAL OR THE BRAKE. THE RESULT WAS THE JUMPING & BUCKING OF THE CAR & PASSENGERS WITHIN. UPON TAKING THE CAR TO CHEVY REPAIR, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS DAMAGED BECAUSE OF A FAULTY WASHER IN THE AXLE THAT BROKE. THE BROKEN WASHER PARTS ENTERED THE WHEEL HUB, DAMAGING BOTH THE WHEEL HUB & THE SPEED SENSOR.
18K MILES IN, 1 WHEEL IS GETTING VERY HOT. DEALER CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. HAS NEVER MENTIONED IT BEFORE, BUT SAYS THEY RECOMMEND REGULAR CALIPER SLIDE PIN CLEANING AND LUBING. WANTS $200. IF IT'S A BAD CALIPER, THEN IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY WILL DO NOTHING. SO I HAVE AT LEAST 1 NON-FUNCTIONAL BRAKE AT 18K MILES. SOUNDS LIKE A SAFETY HAZARD.
CENTER SEAT BELT OF BACK SEAT IS FULLY EXTENDED AND WILL NOT RETRACT. THIS PREVENTS THE SEAT BELT TO BE HELD SNUGLY AGAINST THE BODY OR CAR SEAT.
THE BATTERY FOR 2017 CHEVY BOLT HAS PROBLEM AND MY CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT I WAS IN THE CITY AND THIS HAPPENED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE BATTERY WAS SHOWING IT HAS 70 MILES LEFT, IT DROPPED TO 30 AND THEN ZERO RIGHT AWAY AND I COULD NOT MOVE THE CAR AND HAD TO TOW THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP. I HAVE ONLY 17,000 MILES ON THE CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP, AT FIRST THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON BATTERY THAT WAS ISSUED APRIL 1ST AND I SHOULD BE GETTING A LETTER IN THE MAIL, LATER CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DEALERSHIP CHANGED THEIR STORY AND NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THERE IS NO RECALL AND IT IS ONLY FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION THAT THEY NEED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY! I DO NOT WANT TO IMAGINE IF THE CAR WOULD HAVE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. IF YOU OWN A CHEVY BOLT BE VERY CAREFUL AND I WOULD NOT TRUST THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE AS CHEVY IS NOT EVEN ISSUING A RECALL TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.
Since the car was new, the windshield wipers have had a software error that can disable the wipers in snowy weather. It is not unusual for one or the other wiper to stop working for no apparent reason in snowy conditions. If the passenger's side stops working, it isn't too bad, but if the driver's side wiper stops working, then it traps the other wiper below it, preventing both from working. Sometimes after several minutes, the passenger wiper will push the driver wiper up about 1/3 of the way up the windshield, at which point it will kick in once, then stop working again. Stopping and restarting the car generally will not help, but leaving it off overnight will usually reset the software and the wipers start working normally again. It seems like it is a software bug with detecting if the wipers are frozen/stuck, that incorrectly thinks that a wiper is stuck, even when it is not, and decides to disable the wiper. This has happened many, many times, I should have reported it years ago. I attached a couple of pictures from a dashcam video one of the times it happened, it's harder to see from pictures than the video, but in the first picture the bottom, passenger side wiper is down, and the second picture it is trying to move up, but is blocked by the top/driver side wiper. It may appear that the wiper is frozen and stuck, but it is not, and after several minutes the bottom wiper was able to move the disabled top wiper significantly up the windshield. Chevy needs a software update to ensure the wipers actually work properly, especially in bad weather conditions.
ON THE NIGHT OF MARCH 2, 2019 I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 50 MPH ON A STATE HIGHWAY WHEN I SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, LOST PROPULSION. A NOTE CAME ON ON THE DASH INDICATING THAT I NEEDED TO PULL OVER AND PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. HAPPILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC SO THAT I WAS ABLE TO DO SO WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND PUT IT INTO DRIVE AFTER THAT, SO I CALLED A TOW TRUCK. IT WAS VERY COLD WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK AS THE CAR HAD NO HEAT. THE CAR REPORTED APPROXIMATELY 50% BATTERY CAPACITY THE ENTIRE TIME. A SUDDEN UNEXPECTED LOSS OF PROPULSION IS A DANGEROUS EVENT. THE CAR HAD ONLY 11,000 MILES ON IT. AFTER SITTING FOR SOME TIME, THE CAR HAS 'FIXED' ITSELF. HOWEVER, THIS WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO A CERTIFIED CHEVROLET SERVICE CENTER AND CALLED CHEVROLET TO REPORT THE ISSUE. BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, THEY ARE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.
ON 2/27/2019 WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK DURING A SIGNIFICANT SNOW EVENT, BOTH WIPERS STOPPED WORKING ON OUR CAR. THEY REMAINED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD AND WOULD NOT WIPE. THIS POSED A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD AS IT MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR HER TO SEE. ON 2/28/2019 I TOOK THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAULT WAS CAUSED BECAUSE THE WIPER MOTOR HAD BEEN "STRIPPED". I AM NOT SURE HOW MY WIFE, WHILE DRIVING THE CAR COULD HAVE CAUSED THE WIPER MOTOR TO GET STRIPPED. THE WIPERS WERE WORKING ONE MOMENT, AND THE NEXT THEY WERE NOT. THERE IS A KNOWN BULLETIN FOR THE WIPER MOTORS TO STOP WORKING IN COLD AMBIENT CONDITIONS, BUT THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO REPAIR THE CAR UNDER THIS BULLETIN.
I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 65MPH ON THE LEFT MOST LANE ON CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY 101-S BEFORE THE 405. THE CAR SKIDDED AND I COLLIDED INTO THE CENTER DIVIDER. MY CAR THEN RICOCHETED ACROSS 5 LANES OF THE HIGHWAY AND HIT THE GUARD RAIL ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THEN, MY CAR EVENTUALLY SLOWED TO A STOP AND THE CAR SMELLED LIKE SMOKE. ALL AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. MY NECK AND SHOULDERS WERE VERY SORE AFTER THE ACCIDENT. THE POLICE CAME AND TOOK A COLLISION REPORT: #9580. THE TOWING COMPANY (EZ TOWING) TOWED THE CAR TO 14710 CALVERT ST., VAN NUYS, CA 91411. ONE OF THE REASONS WE PURCHASED THE CHEVY BOLT WAS BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY FEATURES. MY FAMILY AND I ARE VERY FRUSTRATED AND HIGHLY CONCERNED THAT NOT ONE SINGLE AIR BAG DEPLOYED IN SUCH A HIGH IMPACT COLLISIONS IN WHICH BOTH THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WERE INVOLVED.
AN UNPROMPTED MESSAGE APPEARS PERIODICALLY ON THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN OF MY VEHICLE. THE BOLT EV 2017 OWNER'S MANUAL PROVIDES NO INFORMATION ON THIS UNPROMPTED MESSAGE THAT APPEARS ON THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN, DOES NOT WARN OF THE DANGERS THAT THIS MESSAGE POSES TO DRIVING, AND DOES NOT INDICATE THAT THE DRIVER MUST GIVE ASSENT TO THE IMPLIED FALSE ASSUMPTION THAT THE DRIVER'S ATTENTION IS NOT ON DRIVING IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE MESSAGE FROM THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN. THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN ALSO REMAINS STUCK ON THE REAR CAMERA VIEW WHILE DRIVING FORWARD AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60MPH. THIS SITUATION HAS OCCURRED ON N. MOPAC EXPRESSWAY AND ON W. PARMER LANE, AS WELL AS ON STREETS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD IN NORTH AUSTIN. I HAVE WRITTEN FOUR LETTERS TO MS. MARY T. BARRA, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY (24 DEC. 2018, 16 JAN. 2019, 18 JAN. 2019, AND 22 JAN. 2019), REGARDING THESE SAFETY ISSUES AND HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE, NOR HAS THE CHEVROLET EXECUTIVE RESOLUTION TEAM ADDRESSED THESE ISSUES. THE CHEVROLET EXECUTIVE RESOLUTION TEAM ARRANGED FOR AUTONATION CHEVROLET OF WEST AUSTIN TO EXAMINE THE SAFETY CONCERNS. THE SERVICE DRIVE MANAGER OF AUTONATION CHEVROLET OF WEST AUSTIN OBSERVED THE VERY PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING WITH MY VEHICLE ON 8 JAN. 2019. AUTONATION CHEVROLET OF WEST AUSTIN THEN PRODUCED A REPORT ON 16 JAN. 2019 THAT FALSELY CLAIMED THAT THESE PROBLEMS ARE 'UNABLE TO DUPLICATE AT THIS TIME' AND THAT THERE WERE 'NO ERRORS FOUND.'
CHEVROLET BOLT 2017 WITH ABOUT 55% OF BATTERY CHARGE BRIEFLY DISPLAYED A MESSAGE 'PROPULSION MAY BE REDUCED' AND A FEW MINUTES LATER IT STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY AND HAD TO BE TOWED AWAY. THE BATTERY INDICATOR SWITCHED MOMENTARILY FROM 125 MILES TO 40 MILES AND THEN IMMEDIATELY TO 10 MILES AND THE CAR COULD NOT BE SHIFTED TO DRIVE, DISPLAYING MESSAGE 'CONDITION NOT CORRECT TO SHIFT.' BEWARE, AS GLITCH LIKE THAT WITH BOLT CAN REALLY ENDANGER YOUR LIFE, AS IT ENDANGERED MINE. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ALONE IN THE CAR WITHOUT MY FAMILY, STUCK ON THE FREEWAY AFTER DARK AS CARS AROUND WERE GOING FULL SPEED. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BATTERY, BUT AFTER THE REPLACEMENT THE CAPACITY AT FULL CHARGE SHOWS ONLY 154 MILES IN LIEU OF OVER 220 MILES BOLT SUPPOSED TO HAVE.
SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN NOVEMBER 2017 THE BACK WINDSHIELD BEEN SHATTERED 4 TIMES AND IT HAPPENED ON THE COLDEST DAY OF THE YEAR. THE DATE WAS IN A MONTH OF FEBRUARY, MARCH, AND NOVEMBER. I TRIED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH GM BUT THEY WERE NOT HELPFUL.
I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE 12-VOLT BATTERY. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER, STALLS, AND THEN IT LOOSES ALL FUNCTIONS - CANNOT BE EVEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL TO MOVE IT, CANNOT OPEN REAR DOORS. WE COULDN'T EVEN GET IN ON A TOW TRUCK.
MY CAR WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT SIGNAL, SOMEONE BEHIND ME WAS UNABLE TO STOP AND CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF MY CAR, PUSHING MY CAR APPROXIMATELY 20FT FORWARD. MY CAR WAS RENDERED IN OPERABLE DUE TO DAMAGE TO A REAR ELECTRICAL AMPLIFIER BENEATH THE TRUNK FLOOR. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO A COLLISION REPAIR FACILITY. GM WITHDREW THE NECESSARY STRUCTURAL PARTS TO REPAIR IT (PART NUMBER - 95429564 R UPPER REAR BODY SIDE RAIL.) AND DID NOT RELEASE A NEW PART DURING THE 8.5 WEEKS MY CAR WAS AT THE COLLISION REPAIR FACILITY. MY INSURANCE COMPANY THEN DETERMINED THAT THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS DUE TO NO PARTS WERE AVAILABLE TO REPAIR IT. THE OTHER DRIVER DID NOT GET A TICKET, THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 40MPG ON THIS ROAD. THIS WAS A LOW SPEED CRASH THAT RENDERED THE CAR DRIVE SYSTEM INOPERABLE. CHEVY BOLT EV'S WITH MODEL YEARS 2017, 2018 AND 2019 HAS THE SAME DESIGN THAT WILL LEAD TO THE DRIVE SYSTEM BEING INOPERABLE IN LOW SPEED REAR END COLLISIONS.
DRIVING AT 65 MPH WITH 100+ MILE RANGE, CAR HAD A SUDDEN AND COMPLETE LACK OF PROPULSION. ELECTRONICS IN THE CAR CONTINUED TO WORK, BUT ABSOLUTELY NO PROPULSION. COULD SHIFT CAR TO NEUTRAL. CAR EVENTUALLY TOWED TO DEALER.
CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO COAST TO A STOP. THE HIGH-VOLTAGE BATTERY WHICH HAD BEEN 3/4 FULL WENT DOWN TO ZERO. AFTER THE INCIDENT, THE CAR COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVE. I'D ALREADY HAD GM'S RECALL INSTALLED N172127150
BOLT EV CHIMED, ICON APPEARED AND THE TRAVEL MILEAGE FROM THE EVENING'S CHARGE DROPPED FROM ABOUT 240 MI TO LO AND I HAD TO PULL OVER AND PARK. MESSAGE ON DISPLAY WAS PROPULSION POWER IS REDUCED. I THEN HAD TO BE TOWED TO CHEVY DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL #18097 REPROGRAMMED. PROBLEM REOCCURRED 3 DAYS LATER. HAD TO BE TOWED AGAIN. CAR IS UNSAFE. I LIVE IN VERY RURAL AREA...WAS LUCKY IT WAS DAYLIGHT.
ON 2018-07-26 AT APPROXIMATELY 2325H, VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AT ~70MPH NORTHBOUND ON I-95, THE MAINE TURNPIKE. LOCATION WAS APPROXIMATELY 1/2 MILE NORTH OF EXIT-32 (BIDDEFORD, ME). ROAD CONDITIONS WERE GOOD, TEMPERATURES IN THE MID-70F, HUMID. THE OWNER'S WIFE WAS DRIVING, WITH HER HUSBAND IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. AT THE TIME LISTED, THE VEHICLE SOUNDED A WARNING CHIME, AND RAPIDLY LOST POWER FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS (70 MI/HR). VEHICLE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SPEED, WAS IN CONTROL WITH BRAKES AND STEERING, EMERGENCY FLASHERS, AND LIGHTS OPERATING. VEHICLE DRIVER INFORMATION PANEL GAVE ERRATIC AND UNRELIABLE READINGS. ALTERNATELY, THE DISPLAY SHOWED: * WARNING ICON ON RIGHT HAND SIDE * MESSAGE "SHIFT INTO PARK" * RANGE DROPPED FROM ~75 MILES TO ZERO * BATTERY GAUGE WOULD INDICATE 5% BATTERY WITH A RANGE OF 70+ MILES * REGENERATIVE BATTERY ICON SHOWED A REGEN BRAKING LIMIT OF <30KW (INDICATING BATTERY FULL??) (PAGE 116 CHEVROLET BOLT USER MANUAL) AFTER STOPPING VEHICLE WAS UNRESPONSIVE TO MOST CONTROLS. * INTERMITTENT INABILITY TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK * WARNINGS TO GO INTO LOW-POWER MODE * WARNING THE "BATTERY SAVER ACTIVE" * WARNING FOR "HIGH VOLTAGE CHARGING SYSTEM"
