WHILE DRIVING, MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT'S POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND THE WHEEL TIGHTENS TO THE POINT WHERE IT BECOMES TO HARD TO DRIVE. IT HAPPENS AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING STRAIGHT AND THE LIGHT COMES ON AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON TO RESET IT INORDER TO DRIVE. IN THE BOOK IT SAYS THAT IF THE VEHICLE GOES THROUGH TO MANY HARD TURNS WHILE DRIVING IT TIGHTENS TO SLOW THE DRIVER AND STOP THEM FROM DRIVING IRRESPONSIBLY. SINCE THE PROBLEM OCCURRED WITHOUT FAULT TO MY DRIVING I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND HAD THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MODULE AND MOTOR REPLACED IT WORKED FINE FOR ONE FULL DAY. THEN THE PROBLEM CAME BACK. I THEN TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE POWER STEERING MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE AT OTHERS COMPLAINTS ON TOPIX AND ASK.COM AND MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME SYSTEM. THIS PROBLEM POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT HAPPENS INSTANTLY, THERE IS NO FOREWARNING THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND THE WHEEL TIGHTENS ALL AT ONE TIME. IT IS ESPECIALLY UNSAFE WHEN TURNING THE VEHICLE BECAUSE ALL YOU CAN DO IS KEEP STRAIGHT OR STOP AND TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. *TR
2006 CHEVROLET COBALT WITH 93K MILES, FUEL LINE NIPPLE ON PRESSURE SIDE OF FUEL PUMP CRACKS RELEASING FUEL AND VAPOR TO THE UNDERSIDE OF VEHICLE, CAUSING ENGINE FAILURE, FIRE AND POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC SITUATION. FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. *TR

I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT WITH POWER STEERING THAT STOP WORKING. *TR
THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THIS FAILURE WERE NONE. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND MY ELECTRICAL POWERING STEERING WENT OUT ON A TRIP WITH MY TWO CHILDREN. I AM SO UPSET ABOUT THIS. THE "POWER STEERING" LIGHT CAME ON EXACTLY ONE MINUTE BEFORE THIS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD NO NOTICE AND HAD TO PULL HARD OFF THE HIGHWAY AND RESTART THE CAR. I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP (WITHOUT A WARRANTY) AND IT IS GOING TO COST $2000. I DO NOT HAVE THIS KIND OF MONEY AND ALSO STILL OWE $10,500 ON A CAR THAT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE MY CHILDREN IN. THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED IS WHAT THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP SAID. *TR
I GOT IN MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT CAR THIS PAST SATURDAY AND WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HILL THAT I LIVE ON WHEN I REACH THE CURB AND NEED TO TURN AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN AND LOCKED WHILE DRIVING. THERE WAS A CAR COMING THE OTHER DIRECTION AND I ALMOST HIT IT BECAUSE MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. THE STEERING WHEEL IS STILL LOCKED AND I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK IN IT TO DRIVE. THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE POWER STEERING FLUID IT IS ALL ELECTRONIC. *TR
I OWN A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. ON AUGUST 7, 2009 MY DAUGHTER (19 YEARS OLD) WAS TRAVELING WITH MY NIECE (11) AND MY NEPHEW (8) THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE CAR. MY DAUGHTER GOT IT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURNED THE CAR OFF, RESTARTED THE ENGINE THERE WAS POWER STEERING SHE BEGAN TRAVELING AGAIN AND IT REPEATEDLY LOST POWER STEERING. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED SINCE THE DATE OF THE INCIDENT THERE IS AN UNDETERMINED LENGTH OF TIME BEFORE THE PART WILL AVAILABLE FOR REPAIR. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO HAPPEN. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND REQUIRE GM TO RECALL THESE CARS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR
THE POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING, AND I HAVE TO TURN OFF MY CAR AND IT WORKS AGAIN FOR ONLY ONE MINUTE! AND IT STOPS WORKING AGAIN! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING HE EXPERIENCES A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE INABILITY TO STEER WHILE DRIVING INCREASES THE RISK FOR VEHICLE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND A TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT AN EXPENSE OF $356.00. HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 50,000.
2006 CHEVY COBALT POWER STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT AND WHEN YOU CUT IT OFF AND RECRANK IT WILL WORK FOR A LITTLE WHILE THEN SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN. BOUGHT IT USED IN 2008 DIDN'T THINK I WOULD NEED WARRANTY SO I DIDN'T PURCHASE IT AND FROM WHAT I'M READING ON DIFFERENT FORUMS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR MANY COBALT OWNERS ITS TIME CHEVROLET DID A RECALL TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND A TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT SINCE HE COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE, HE COULD NOT PROVIDE A FREE REMEDY. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 78000. UPDATED 11/10/09 *CN THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD CUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. I WAS MAKING A U TURN THE FIRST TIME MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT, I THOUGHT I WAS OUT OF GAS OR SOMETHING SO I TURNED THE KEY TO OFF AND RESTARTED THE CAR,IT WAS FINE FOR A WHILE MAYBE 20 MIN. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A CHIMING NOISE INSIDE THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE. SUDDENLY, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE DRIVER HAD TO EXERT GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DRIVER PROCEEDED TO A PARKING LOT AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN MOTOR ASSEMBLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 28,000.
2006 CHEVROLET COBALT, 77,000 MILES WORDS POWERSTEERING LIT UP ON DASH AND I WAS UNABLE TO STEER CAR WHILE MOVING. NO CONSEQUENCES ON BLOCK FROM MY HOUSE BUT IT IS NOT A FLUID SYSTEM. THIS IS NOT PREVENTABLE AND I VIEWED ONE REPORT WITH OVER 375 COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH 2005 - 2008 COBALTS. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED IF THIS IS A STEERING COLUMN PROBLEM WITH SUCH PREVALENCE. I TRAVEL QUITE A DISTANCE TO WORK. WHAT IF I HAD BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE AS USUAL? *TR
1. WE WERE DRIVING AND A LIGHT CAME ON THAT SAID THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING. 2. IT HAPPENS WITHIN SEVERAL SECONDS OF STARTING THE CAR, THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILS. 3. WENT TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THERE IS A SHORTAGE IN THE POWER STEERING BOX AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT AND IT WOULD COST $1,000. *TR

POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE ON WAY TO WORK. WARNING LIGHT CAME ON PRIOR TO POWER STEERING FAILURE. DEALER CONTACTED, AND CAR TAKEN IN THE NEXT DAY. ALTHOUGH THE WARNING LIGHT DID NOT COME ON AND THE STEERING WORKED THE NEXT DAY, WAS TOLD THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS IN THE STEERING COLUMN, AND THE MOTORS WERE FAULTY. PARTS HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT, THERE WAS AN UNUSUAL CRACKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE POWER ASSIST MOTOR WAS REPLACED YET THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,000. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT, WENT OFF THE ROAD THROUGH A BRICK WALL, OFF A 3 FOOT DROP OFF AND INTO A HOUSE. THE CAR IS TOTALED AND MOST OF THE DAMAGE IS IN THE FRONT, THE SENSORS ARE CRUSHED AND NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE CAR HAS 60K MILES ON IT. AIRBAGS WERE NEVER DEPLOYED BEFORE AND NO CODES WERE ON THE CAR SAYING IT WAS BAD. *TR

AFTER RESEARCHING MANY DATABASES, SEEMS THIS IS A SEVERE PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL CAR AND THIS PARTICULAR STYLE OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PUMP THAT GM UTILIZES. THERE ARE NO EVENTS THAT LEAD TO THE FAILURE. 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT POWER STEERING FAILURE. I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2.5 YEARS AND ONLY HAS 45000 MILES. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN FAILS, ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER SAFELY AT SPEEDS OVER 45 MPH. FAILS ANYWHERE AFTER 2 MINUTES TO 10 MINUTES AFTER CAR IS CRANKED. 2006 CHEVY COBALT. AT APPROXIMATELY 80,000 TOTAL MILES, WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING QUIT. I RECEIVED A VISUAL MESSAGE FROM THE CAR MONITOR ADVISING "POWER STEERING". THE CAR COULD BE STEERED, BUT WITHOUT POWER STEERING. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING, THE POWER STEERING WORKS, BUT AT SOME POINT WITHIN 1 MILE OF DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING QUITS. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE. IT IS DANGEROUS AS IT IMPACTS MY ABILITY TO STEER AND CONTROL THE CAR, AND IT QUITS WITHOUT WARNING. DRIVING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER IS ESPECIALLY HAZARDOUS. UPON TAKING THE CAR TO MY CHEVY DEALER, I WAS ADVISED REPAIR WOULD BE OVER $1,000. *TR

I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND THE STEERING IS DIFFICULT TO TURN IN THE MORNING. I HAVE TO BACK UP OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AND TURN MY STEERING WHEEL AND AT TIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL. I THOUGHT THAT WAS NORMAL BUT NOW I AM HEARING IT SHOULD NOT DO THAT. IT STARTED BACK IN AUGUST AND HAS GOTTEN MORE FREQUENT, HAPPENING ALMOST EVERY MORNING. AT TIMES IT DOES NOT FEEL LIKE I HAVE POWER STEERING. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE VEHICLE HAD FOUR GOODYEAR EAGLE RS-A TIRES WITH A LINE SIZE OF P205/55R/16 TIRES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ONE OF THE TIRES BLEW OUT WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATE SPEEDS OF 30 MPH. A LOCAL MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE OTHER THREE TIRES WERE ALSO DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,756.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 25-70 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND AT HIGH SPEEDS THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 61,000.
MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND IT WENT OUT. IF I PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF, LET IT SIT, TURN BACK ON, IT WILL WORK FINE FOR A RANDOM PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE IT GOES OUT AGAIN. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT. NOW IT KEEPS GOING OUT. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE INTERIOR CHIME SOUNDED THREE TIMES. IN ADDITION, THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. SUDDENLY, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND THE DRIVER HAD TO EXERT GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, THE POWER STEERING WAS FUNCTIONAL AGAIN; HOWEVER, THE WARNING LIGHT REMAINED LIT UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE POWER STEERING UNIT, WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 32,500. UPDATED 09/14/09. *LJ UPDATED 09/16/09.*JB
NORMAL DRIVING, GAS LEAKING FROM FUEL TANK, NOT YET CORRECTED, 37,000 IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BY ONLY 1000 MILES, DEALER SAYS THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON THIS CAR AT ALL PLASTIC GAS TANK. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT, THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE WOULD APPEAR ON THE LED SCREEN AND THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL, REVERTING BACK TO MANUAL STEERING. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND AVOID DRIVING UNDERNEATH A TRACTOR TRAILER, BUT OTHERS MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE. I READ SEVERAL HUNDRED POSTINGS ON A WEBSITE LAST NIGHT WITH OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS. GM WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLES STEERING, OR POTENTIALLY A DEFECT PROMPTING A RECALL. ONCE YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT, THE POWER STEERING WORKS AGAIN AND THEN THE PROBLEM WILL REPEAT ITSELF AGAIN SOMETIMES WITHIN SECONDS OF SEVERAL MINUTES. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR 3 DAYS NOW AND GETTING WORSE. I AM WAITING TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A GM DEALER FOR EVALUATION, AND I'M ALREADY BEING TOLD THAT THIS IS A NON-COVERED WARRANTY PROBLEM, COSTING AROUND $2,000 TO FIX. *TR

HE THEN NOTICED FUEL LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WILL RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE CONTACT DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE IT IN THAT CONDITION. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT THAT IS UNDER 40000 MILES. THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE COMES ON AND THE I LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WHILE I AM AT A STOP IT HAPPENS WHILE I AM DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. WHEN I TURN THE CAR OFF IT WILL WORK FINE FOR A WHILE AND THEN I LOSE THE POWER STEERING AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, BUT AS SOON I HAD LEFT IT STARTED IT AGAIN. I WENT BACK TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN AND THAT WILL COST OVER $700. I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR 3 YEARS AND HAVE KEPT UP ON ALL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. CAR HAD THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY BINDING REPLACED ON 10/6/08 WITH MILEAGE OF 28201 MI. AT AN AUTHORIZED CHEVROLET DEALER WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THE KEY COULD NOT BE REMOVED FROM IGNITION BECAUSE THE CAR DID NOT RECOGNIZE IT WAS IN PARK. *TR

A FEW MILES LATER THE VEHICLE POWER STEERING FAILED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND INSPECTED WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING UNIT HAD FAILED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. HE WILL CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 39,000. BL
