I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN TAMPA WHEN MY CAR STARTED TO MAKE A "DINGING" NOISE. I THEN REALIZED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO GET HARD TO TURN. I LOOKED AT THE INFORMATION SCREEN ON MY DASHBOARD AND IT SAID 'POWER STEERING'. I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO DO SO I RESTARTED MY CAR AND THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO GO AWAY. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER WHILE DRIVING IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I TOOK IT INTO THE NEAREST CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE GENTLEMEN INFORMED ME THE POWER STEERING HAD INDEED GONE OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BUT WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. HE ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE BACK TO WHERE I'M STATIONED AT BECAUSE I'M NOT OLD ENOUGH TO RENT A CAR AND NEEDED TO REPORT OFF LEAVE. ON THE WAY BACK MY POWER STEERING WENT OFF AND THIS TIME AFTER I RESTARTED MY CAR IT WENT OUT AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY BASE I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE REPAIR WOULD COST BETWEEN $1000 TO $1200. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO REPLACE THE PART AS OF YET AND AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR. *TR
DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, POWER STEERING GOES IN AND OUT ON 2006 CHEVY COBALT. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION PRESSURE SENSOR FAILED AT APPROX 72,000 MILES. IT WAS REPLACED AND THEN THE NEW ONE FAILED AGAIN AT APPROX 90,000 MILES. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOME TYPE OF MANUFACTURING DEFECT PRESENT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE POWER STEERING LOCKS UP. THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS A COMMON FAILURE WITH THE CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS GUARANTEED TO OCCUR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT 50,000 MILES AND OUT OF WARRANTY. A REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 63,000.
1) THE CAR WAS STEERING FINE UP UNTIL APPROX 69,000 MILES. 2) THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ON THIS MODEL CAR QUITS WORKING ARBITRARILY. THE POWER STEERING WILL INITIALLY FUNCTION CORRECTLY EVERY TIME THE CAR ENGINE IS RESTARTED (IGNITION TURNED OFF THEN BACK ON) REGARDLESS OF HOW LONG THE ENGINE HAS BEEN ON OR OFF PRIOR TO THE RESTART. THEN AT SOME POINT AFTER THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, THE POWER STEERING WILL QUIT AND YOU MUST APPLY TREMENDOUS FORCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL TO CONTROL THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE. THE TIME BETWEEN RESTART AND OCCURRENCE OF THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT APPEARS TO VARY WITH TEMPERATURE, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM BEHAVIOR IS NOT CONSISTENT ACROSS ALL TEMPERATURE RANGES. IN GENERAL, THE COOLER THE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING IN, THE LONGER THE POWER STEERING WILL WORK CORRECTLY BEFORE IT QUITS, BUT THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. THE ONE THING THAT HAS BEEN CONSISTENT IS THAT ONCE THE POWER STEERING QUITS, IT REMAINS OUT UNTIL YOU TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART THE CAR. 3) I HAVE NOT ATTEMPTED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM REPAIRED AS ESTIMATES TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM ARE IN THE $2000 DOLLAR RANGE. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT LTZ AND THE POWER STEERING HAS WENT OUT ON IT NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE IM DRIVING, TRYING TO MAKE A TURN, WHILE MY 2 CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR. IT MAKES THE CAR EXTREMELY HARD TO STEER AROUND A CURVE. THANKFULLY I HAVE ONLY ABOUT HIT OTHER CARS. BUT I STILL HAVE TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER WAY TO WORK, UNTIL I CAN SAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GET IT FIXED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT BUT, I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM WITH THE COBALT 06. I HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PART BOUT 1000.00 THAT I DON'T HAVE.. I M A SINGLE MOM OF TWO BOYS . I THINK THERE REALLY NEEDS TO BE A RECALL DONE ON THIS PARTICULAR PART ON THE 06 COBALT. BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT.. THERE ARE TO MANY PEOPLE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS.. OH AND DID I MENTION MY WARRANTY JUST RAN OUT.. *TR
FOR A FEW MONTHS, I HAD BEEN HEARING A NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF MY CAR WHEN TURNING OR HITTING A SMALL BUMP. WHEN I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC, THEY IMMEDIATELY KNEW THE CAUSE. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM NEEDED REPLACED. THEY HAVE SEEN A LOT OF THIS PROBLEM ON THE 06 CHEVY COBALT. BOTH SIDES NEEDED REPLACED AND THE CAR ONLY HAD 50,000 MILES. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT IN FEBRUARY OF 2009. AROUND 65,000 MILES, THE POWER STEERING BEGAN GOING OUT. AT FIRST, IT WOULD ONLY GO OUT IF IT WAS HOT OUTSIDE, AND IF YOU TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON IT WOULD GO AWAY. IT BECAME MORE AND MORE FREQUENT TO WHERE IT IS OUT NEARLY ALL THE TIME NOW. I HAVE BEEN TOLD MY ONLY OPTION IS TO HAVE THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROX. $700.00. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILS WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE STEERING WHEEL BECOMES LOCKED AND HE MUST USE EXCESSIVE FORCE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT TURNS OFF THE VEHICLE AND THEN RESTARTS IT MINUTES LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT A PART IN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WOULD REPAIR IT EVENTUALLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000.
I HAVE NOTICED LOOKING ON LINE TO CONSUMER COMPLAINTS, THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS GOING OUT ON THE CARS. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. MY NIECE HAS A 2007 CHEVY COBALT AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON THESE CARS. I'M A SINGLE MOTHER JUST BACK AT WORK AFTER DAUGHTER HAD A TRANSPLANT. I DIDN'T WORK FOR 4 YEARS TAKING CARE OF MY DAUGHTER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. HE PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SERPENTINE BELT FAILED AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO LOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. IN ADDITION, THE POWER STEERING FAILED TWICE AND IS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 44,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 55 MPH, THE DRIVER CRASHED INTO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND THE FRONT END WAS SMASHED INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS CONCERNED THAT THE IMPACT WAS AT HIGH ENOUGH SPEEDS SO THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING UNIT STOPS FUNCTIONING AT RANDOM IN WARM WEATHER CONDITIONS. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR ILLUMINATES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000. 2006 COBALT LT. I'VE HAD THIS CAR ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR KEEPS COMING ON AND THE STEERING GOES OFF WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I'M AFRAID IT'S GOING CAUSE MY WIFE TO WRECK. I SEEN ON THE INTERNET WHERE THERE WERE SEVERAL HUNDRED COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
THERE WERE NO PRIOR EVENTS LEADING UP TO MY POWER STEERING GOING OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY POWER STEERING LIGHT CLICKED ON AND I COULD BARELY TURN MY STEERING WHEEL AND IN FACT ALMOST GOT INTO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WASN'T JUST MY POWER STEERING BUT MY ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN WAS SHOT AT ONLY 50K. GM REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN FOR $800; ABSOLUTELY ABSURD FOR A CAR I BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN 2006. *TR
I OWN A CHEVY COBALT LT AND THE POWER STEERING GOES OFF AND ITS HARD TO CONTROL. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT THAT ON FREQUENT OCCASIONS THE POWER STEERING UNIT GOES OUT FOR NO REASON AT ALL. IT SEEMS THAT THIS HAPPENS AS THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE INCREASES. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF I AM ON THE INTERSTATE OR DRIVING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND HAVE FOUND 1000'S OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS POWER STEERING PROBLEM. I HOPE THIS BRINGS THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION FOR GM TO RECALL THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *TR
POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING WHILE DRIVING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT WHICH WAS PURCHASED USED WITH 10,000 MILES. SHE STATED THAT IN TEMPERATURES OVER 50 DEGREES, THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL APPROXIMATELY EVERY 30 TO 40 SECONDS WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AS LOW AS 5 MPH AND UP. WHEN IT FAILED, SHE HAD TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE MOMENTARILY AND ALLOW THE POWER STEERING TO RESET ITSELF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST; HOWEVER, THE CLOSEST DEALER WAS OVER 100 MILES AWAY. SHE DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THAT DISTANCE SINCE THE FAILURE BEGAN TO OCCUR FREQUENTLY. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WERE CLOSING HER CASE UNTIL SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO A DEALER. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THERE WAS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION ( NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE10005; COMPONENT :STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 27,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR ILLUMINATES WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, AND THEN THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER. THE VEHICLE NEARLY FORCES HIM OFF THE ROAD AND HE LOSES CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. A MECHANIC STATED THAT THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE MOTOR SENSOR WAS BURNT. THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
I BOUGHT MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT IN MAY 2006. THERE HAS BEEN A POWER STEERING PROBLEM OCCURRING WITH MY CAR FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS NOW. EVERY NOW AND THEN, THE CAR COMPLETELY STOPS WORKING OR THE CAR BEGINS TO JOLT EVERY TIME I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL. IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER. SOMETIMES AFTER I SHUT OFF THE CAR THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS, BUT SOMETIMES IT STAYS THERE FOR A FEW DAYS. THE ENGINE LIGHT ALSO GOES ON AS WELL AS THE TC LIGHT. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE LIKE THIS BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO HARDENS UP TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN NO LONGER TURN THE WHEEL. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE MY CAR HAS BEEN PARKED AND WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON A REGULAR ROAD. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE WAS UNABLE TO DETECT THE PROBLEM. I SPOKE TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID TO TAKE IT RIGHT WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS BECAUSE IF THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS THEY WILL BE UNABLE TO DETECT IT. I TOOK THE CAR ON SEPT. 9, 2009 WHEN IT WAS GIVING ME PROBLEMS AND WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE DEALER, BUT SINCE IT WAS 30 MINS BEFORE THEY CLOSED THEY COULD NOT INSPECT IT. I TOOK IT BACK THE NEXT DAY AND NOW I'M WAITING ON THE RESULTS AND ESTIMATE, WHICH TODAY'S DATE IS SEPT.11, 2009. THEY SAID THE ESTIMATE RANGES FROM $200 TO $900. I'VE LOOKED UP RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM AND THERE WERE NONE MADE EVEN THOUGH MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS CAR AND I WOULD LIKE THIS PROBLEM TO BE HEARD AND FIXED. *TR
SUNDAY, MARCH 8 STARTING CAR IN PARKING LOT AND BEGAN TO DRIVE BUT THE POWER STEERING FAILURE DISPLAYED. THIS IS A 2006 COBALT AND SHOULD NOT EXPERIENCE SOMETHING LIKE THIS SO SOON. I'VE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME THING. WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT!?! WARRANTY OR NO WARRANTY, REPAIR OF THIS SHOULD BE ON THE HANDS OF CHEVROLET, NOT ME. WHERE ON EARTH HAS QUALITY GONE AND OWNERSHIP OF YOUR WORK ETHIC. WHO CARES ABOUT PUTTING THE LATEST AND GREATEST VEHICLE ON THE ROAD? HOW ABOUT THINKING ABOUT THE PERSON DRIVING THE CAR! THANK GOODNESS THERE WASN'T AN ACCIDENT 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE PARKING LOT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ON THE INTERSTATE ON A BUSY WEEKEND. *TR
WHEN DRIVING MY CAR THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE COMES ON MY DASH WITH A BEEP. AND THEN ALL POWER STEERING IS LOST IN THE CAR. ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RE STARTED THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE GOES OFF AND THE POWER STEERING WORKS FINE UNTIL THE BUZZER GOES OFF AGAIN. IF YOU PRESS THE BUTTON THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE WILL DISAPPEAR BUT THERE IS STILL NO POWER STEERING. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY VARIABLES AS TO WHAT CAUSES THIS YOU CAN BE GOING 70 MPH OR 20. IT CAN GO OFF 10 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE OR 45 MINUTES INTO IT. I HAVE TAKEN TO A LOCAL SHOP THEY FEEL THERE IS A SHORT IN THE DASH. THEY HAVE REFERRED ME TO TAKE BACK TO THE DEALER AND TO CONTACT YOUR SITE. THE DEALER IS GOING TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC ON THE CAR TUESDAY MAR 12, 2009. MY CAR IS A CHEVY COBALT 2006 WITH 40 000 MILES ON IT. I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE ARE MANY SERVICE BULLETINS ON THIS CAR AND THAT FOR SUCH A NEW CAR A PROBLEM OF THIS TYPE AND LARGE REPAIR COST IS EXTREMELY ABNORMAL AND THE SAFETY ISSUES OF THE SUDDEN LOSS OF ALL POWER STEERING IS A GREAT CONCERN. *TR
TRANSMISSION DOES NOT LOCK INTO PARK, THUS NOT ALLOWING THE KEY TO BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. SHIFT LEVER CAN BE MOVED FROM PARK POSITION TO ANY OTHER POSITION WITHOUT APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PETAL. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AS THE CAR COULD EASILY BE SHIFTED INTO A MOTION GEAR WITHOUT THE USER KNOWING. ENTIRE SHIFT MECHANISM MUST BE REPLACED TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE AT A EXTREME AMOUNT OF MONEY. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE IS INVOLVED IN A INJURY AND DEATH RELATED INCIDENT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN, THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS STRUCK ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SPUN AROUND AND CRASHED INTO A CURVE. THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS FAILED AND THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CONTACT'S HEAD STRUCK THE WINDOW. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE APPRAISER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHY THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THE FUEL LINE IS CRACKED AND THE RETURN VALVE LINE IS SPILLING FUEL ON THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS REPAIRED COSTING $800. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
06 COBALT WITH ONLY 54,000 MILES. IGNITION MODULE AND COIL SYSTEM FAILED. SERIOUS MISFIRE IN THE ENGINE MADE FOR THIS CAR TO HAVE A TOUGH TIME MOVING. DEALER COULDN'T BELIEVE THIS HAD GONE ON ME AT 54,000 MILES, NEITHER COULD FIRESTONE. UNREAL. DEALER SHOULD BE DOING THIS REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE AND THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RECALLING 2006 COBALTS AND REPLACING IGNITION COIL SYSTEMS. THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL PART OF THE ENGINE TO FAIL! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND MOMENTS LATER THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE CHECK AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ALSO ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER HAS NOT DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING FAILURE COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,000 AND THE FAILURE WAS 90,000.

I DID NOT START HAVING ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH AGO AND IT WAS INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING LOSS. I TOOK THE CAR IN AND THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND SURE ENOUGH THE COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I FEEL THAT A CAR WITH UNDER 75000 MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS TYPE OF A FAILURE, SO I CONTACTED GM AND WAS TOLD THE BEST THEY WOULD DO IS 15% DISCOUNT ON THE TOTAL REPAIR WHICH IS $760.00 PLUS TAX, I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SLAP IN THE FACE FOR A 30 YEAR + CHEVROLET CUSTOMER, NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT MY DAUGHTER IS DRIVING THIS CAR WITH MY GRANDKIDS AND IT IS NOT SAFE.
