TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION IMMEDIATELY AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 26,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,000. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING NORTH ON I-75 THROUGH CINCINNATI, OH MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION POPPED OUT OF 5TH GEAR AND INTO NEUTRAL TRAVELING AT APPX. 70 MPH. THIS SAME INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED 10 TIMES SO FAR AND THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 9000 MILES. IT IS HAPPENING IN 5TH GEAR BETWEEN 50 AND 70 MPH AT 2-3000 RPM. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY WOULD NOT WORK ON IT. NOW IT SEEMS I AM BEING IGNORED BY THE DEALER AND CHEVROLET AS WELL. APPARENTLY THEY ARE HOPING I JUST GO AWAY! I HAVE ALSO POINTED OUT TO THE DEALER (KERRY CHEVROLET IN ALEXANDRIA, KY) AND CHEVROLET CORP. THEMSELVES THROUGH E-MAIL, WHICH HAVE ELICITED NO RESPONSE, THAT THEIR IS A WEBSITE FOR COBALT OWNERS (COBALTSS.NET) THAT HAS A FORUM FOR PROBLEMS AND SERVICE. THIS FORUM HAS HUNDREDS OF OWNERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR TRANSMISSIONS. ANYTHING FROM SIMPLY POPPING OUT OF GEAR TO COMPLETE FAILURES AND LOCKOUTS. *NM
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THAT HER 06 CHEVY COBALT EXPERIENCED STALLING INCIDENTS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE WEATHER CONDITION AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENTS HAS BEEN FAIRLY WARM. THE CONTACT HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TWICE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME WAS ON 12/05/06 AND THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE VEHICLE STILL CONTINUED TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, SO SHE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A SECOND TIME AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE KILL SWITCH. THE CONTACT CAN PROVIDE COPIES OF INVOICES IF NEEDED.
VEHICLE HA CONTINUOUS IDLE PROBLEMS. WHILE VEHICLE HAD AIR CONDITIONING (A/C ) SYSTEM ON/ IN DRIVE IDLE DROPPED TO 500 RPMS AND SURGEED TO 1000 IN RECOVERY. DROPPED IN HEADLIGHT OUTPUT/ INTERMITTENT STALLING - SLUGGISH RESPONSE FROM ACCELERATOR. NO (SES) LIGHT ILLUMINATION. ISSUE NOTED IN TSB- REPAIRED BY REPROGRAMING PCM/(NOT COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY) - *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN SLIDING WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE LANDED IN A DITCH. THE CONTACT PLACED THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OUT OF THE DITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR LEAKING FLUIDS. THE VEHICLE HAS GONE OFF THE ROAD ON THREE OCCASIONS WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THREE TIMES FOR THE BRAKES AND THEY FOUND NO FAILURES. THE POWERTRAIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34,120.
I WAS DRIVING ALONG AT 50 MPH IN 5TH GEAR. THE SHIFTER CAME OUT OF GEAR. I PULLED OVER SHUT OFF THE ENGINE RESTARTED IT AND TRIED TO GET THE TRANSMISSION IN 1ST GEAR WITH NO SUCCESS. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP IS ADVISING THAT THE CLUTCH IS COMPLETELY WORN OUT AND THEY WANT $2,000.00 TO FIX IT. THE VEHICLE IS JUST ONE YEARS OLD AND ONLY 12,000 MILES. I DO NOT DOWN SHIFT, RIDE THE CLUTCH OR DUMP THE CLUTCH. WE HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST AND THEY HAVE INFORMED US THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DESTROY AND CLUTCH IN ONLY 12,000 MILES AND ONE YEAR OF DRIVING. THEY ADVISE THAT THE PRESSURE PLATE WAS FAULTY FROM THE FACTORY. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED UPON INITIAL ACCELERATION ONTO THE HIGHWAY, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT QUICKLY PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION WHICH STOPPED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT ALERTED. UPDATED 12/15/2006 - *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES FAILED WHILE BACKING OUT OF A SCHOOL PARKING SPOT AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE DRIVER CRASHED INTO A STORAGE UNIT AND POLE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE STORAGE UNIT, POLE AND VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN HOME AND LATER TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE SURGING. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS A DIRTY INJECTOR, IN WHICH THEY REPLACED. IN JANUARY OF 2007, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER FOR THE SURGING ISSUE. IN MARCH OF 2008, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR A RECALL ON THE INJECTORS. IN ADDITION TO THE SURGING, THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO SHAKE VIOLENTLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP. THE BRAKES AND STEERING WOULD NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER IN OCTOBER OF 2008 AND THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED. IN NOVEMBER OF 2008, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AGAIN IN REGARDS TO THE VIOLENT SHAKING. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL A TOW TRUCK IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. IN NOVEMBER OF 2008, THE VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND CRASHED INTO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AS WELL. A COMPLAINT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THE CONTACT IS AWAITING THEIR RESPONSE. SHE WAS ADVISED TO NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE SPEED WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,250 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,040.

MY CAR MAKES A VERY LOUD RATTLING SOUND THAT IS COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN/RACK AND PINION. GM CANADA HAS TOLD ME THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM AT THIS TIME, BUT NOT TO BE WORRIED AS IT IS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN AT THIS TIME. *NM

PARKED ,SHUT CAR OFF, TOOK KEY OUT OF IGNITION, THEN REPLACED AND STARTED IT BACK UP, AND PROCEEDED ENROUTE. (2) AFTER MARKET CRUISE CONTROL FAILURE TO SHUT OFF AND TURN ON. (3) RESULT OF ABOVE (2)AFTER MARKET CRUISE CONTROL TAKES ITS OWN MIND AND DECIDES TO FULLY ACCELERATE UNTIL GEARING DOWN IN HOPES IT 'AWAKES' THE COMPUTER (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION),THEN CRUISE CONTROL WILL FINALLY SHUT OFF. (CONSEQUENCE ) PASSENGER HAD A HEART ATTACK. I CALLED A TAXI. "HE'S OK" (4) SERVICE AIR BAGS LIGHT HAVE BEEN ON SINCE 20,K MILES I NOW HAVE 47,XXX MILES. (6) STOCK SEATS DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES BOTH WERE INSTALLED INCORRECTLYTHEY ARE REALLY SLANTEDLIKE THIS ( / \ ). UPON DRIVING UP THE ON RAMP TO I-985, THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF FOR NO REASON. I WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TAKE THE KEY OUT AND RESTART IT. I GOT THE CAR ABOUT 4 FEET, AND IT STOPPED AGAIN. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES, AND THEN RESTARTED IT. *NM
AFTER A PRETTY GOOD RAIN DURING THE DAY ON OCTOBER 27TH, MY FIANCEE AND I GOT IN MY CAR AND NOTICED THE HEADLINER WAS SAGGING. UPON TOUCHING IT, I FOUND IT WAS SOAKED FROM THE FRONT OF THE SUNROOF, ALL THE WAY FORWARD. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND THIS TO BE EXTREMELY COMMON IN COBALTS. I'M TAKING IT TO THE DEALER TODAY IN HOPES OF REPAIR. *NM
I PURCHASED A 2006 COBALT LS LEVEL 2 USED IN OCTOBER OF 06. SHORTLY AFTER THE PURCHASE MY CAR STARTED A MODERATE TONE WHISTLING AND MY HEATER STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHICH BOTH ARE VERY ANNOYING. I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHALEN CHEVROLET IN GREENWICH NY MANY MANY TIMES AND ALL THEY EVER SAY IS THE NOISES ARE NORMAL THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. SHORTLY AFTER THOSE PROBLEMS CAME ABOUT MY WIPERS STOPPED WORKING IN A STORM FOR NO APPARENT REASON,WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS PROBLEM THEY BLAMED IT ON ME SAYING I WAS MIS-USING MY WIPERS ,APPARENTLY YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO USE THEM. WITHIN DAYS OF THAT PROBLEM MY CAR STARTED TO BUMP WHEN I'D TOUCH THE BRAKES, ONCE AGAIN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS MY FAULT AND THE BRAKE ROTORS NEEDED TO BE PLANED DOWN. STILL TO THIS DAY THE CAR IS WHISTLING THE ENTIRE TIME IT RUNS AND THE HEATER IS CLICKING AWAY LIKE ALWAYS,IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT THIS IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR THE LACK LUSTER CAVALIER,IT IS THE CAVALIER IT'S JUST PRETTIED UP A BIT. TO THIS POINT THE SHABBY ENGINEERING OF THIS CAR HAS COST ME WELL OVER $500 IN REPAIRS & DIAGNOSING TO TRY AND SOLVE A PROBLEM THE GM CERTIFIED MECHANICS AT WHALEN CHEVROLET IN GREENWICH NY CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE OUT---OOPS I MEAN IT'S SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE IT'S FALLING APART. *TR
POWER GOES OFF AFTER YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF. YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE BUTTON IN THE TRUNK ON THE BATTERY BEFORE IT WILL CRANK. POWER BUTTON FOR THE TRUNK DOES NOT WORK. YOU CAN START THE CAR AND IT WILL STILL KEEP TRYING TO CRANK. *JB
IN THE FALL OF 2006, MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT, WITH 24,000 MILES ON IT, WAS CLUNKING WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING A FLAWED INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. THE SHAFT WAS REPLACED UNDER THE GENERAL MOTORS FACTORY 3YEAR 36,000-MILE WARRANTY. TODAY IS OCTOBER 5TH 2011 AND MY COBALT HAS ROUGHLY 40,000 MILES ON IT, AND ONCE AGAIN, I AM HEARING THAT SAME NOISE ALL OVER AGAIN. *TR
EXCESSIVE GLARE FROM POOR DESIGN OF HEADLIGHT CAUSING EXCESSIVE GLARE AND SAFETY RISK FOR OTHER VEHICLES AND OBSTRUCTION OF PEDESTRIAN AND ROAD HAZARDS. THIS APPLIES TO ALL CHEVY COBALT COUPE AND SEDAN MODEL LS LT SS SITED TO DATE. HEADLIGHTS ARE OVERLY BRIGHT AND MISADJUSTED ALSO CAUSING BLINDING OF OTHER VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS. SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE CONTRIBUTING TO DISTRACTION, GLARE BLINDING AND EYE STRAIN. *NM
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE OWNER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE SIDE AIRBAGS. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, LEFT A MESSAGE , AND HAS NOT RECEIVED A RETURN CALL. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 7,800. *AK
MY VEHICLE IS A CHEVY COBALT, 2006. THE POWER STEERING HAS BEEN GOING OUT RANDOMLY SINCE I FIRST BOUGHT THE CAR. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY IF I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN AND IT GOES OUT, TAKES ME BY SURPRISE AND HAVE TO USE MORE STRENGTH TO GO INTO THE TURNS. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT. DAILY. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST ME OVER $2000 TO HAVE THE POWER STEERING REPLACED, AND I DON'T HAVE THE FUNDS TO PAY FOR THAT AND PAY FOR MY CAR, SO NOTHING HAS BEEN FIXED ON IT. THIS SEEMS TO ME TO BE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF IN A RECALL. I HAVE SEEN THOUSANDS OF POSTS BY OTHER OWNERS ON THE INTERNET RELATING TO THIS SAME ISSUE I AM HAVING. I ALSO AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LOCKS, THEY LOCK AND UNLOCK AT WILL. I CAN BE IN OR OUT OF THE CAR, AND IT CAN BE RUNNING OR NOT. NO RHYME OR REASON. *TR

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE WENT OVER A BUMP, AND THE ENGINE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, AND TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHO DETERMINED THE PCM WAS FAULTY, AND UPLOADED NEW SOFTWARE. THIS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM.

I BOUGHT A 2006 CHEVY COBALT BRAND NEW AND IMMEDIATLY QUESTIONED WHY THE STERRING WHEEL SHOOK WHENEVER I BRAKED. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER AND ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS A SMALL PLASTIC GAS SAVER THAT IT WAS TO BE EXPECTED. THE SHAKING OF THE STERRING WHEEL GETS VERY SEVERE WHEN GOING DOWNHILL AND IN INCIDENCES OF QUICK STOPS. I WAS SO SURE THIS CAR WAS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN I DID NOT ALLOW MY 17 YEAR OLD DRIVER TO DRIVE IT. NOW, I AM HEARING ABOUT OTHER CEVY COBALTS THAT HAVE STEERING FAILURE AND I NO LONGER ACCEPT THE ANSWERS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED FROM THE SO CALLED PROFESSIONALS. I HOPE THE GOVERNMENT WILL FORCE GM INTO A RECALL BEFORE MY STEERING FAILS AND I FIND MYSELF IN THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE MY STEERING HAS FAILED

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE IN THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO EACH INCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER ALERTED THE DEALERSHIP THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE IGNITION COIL. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE IGNITION COIL AND CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. UPDATED 9/20/2006 - *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE POWER STEERING FAILS. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS, THE CONTACT MUST TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND WAIT MOMENTARILY FOR THE VEHICLE TO RESTART. IN ADDITION, THE POWER STEERING LOCKS, WHICH MAKES THE KEY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM THE IGNITION. THE CONTACT MUST RATTLE THE KEY, PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO PARK, AND CONTINUE SHIFTING IN ORDER TO RELEASE THE KEY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING. MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL BY CONSTANTLY APPLYING BRAKE PRESSURE, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY CAREENED THROUGH TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC, STRUCK A GUARDRAIL, AND ROLLED OVER INTO AN EMBANKMENT WHERE IT FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. THE CONTACT WAS WEARING A SEAT BELT, BUT MINOR INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE BODY DAMAGE, THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED TOTALED. THE POLICE WERE ALERTED AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO ALERTED. UPDATED 9/20/2006 - THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE TURN SIGNALS SWITCH DID NOT WORK. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR 30 MINUTES, THE CLICK SOUND FOR THE TURN SIGNALS STOPPED WORKING. 2006 COBALT HAD VIBRATIONS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. CUSTOMER STATES IF THEY STOP AND TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND ON IT WILL TEMPORARILY CORRECT THE VIBRATION PROBLEM. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE HAS HAD AN EXTREME VIBRATION AT HIGH SPEED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS BECOME SO DANGEROUS AND HARD TO DRIVE THAT AT TIMES HE WOULD HAVE TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO ASSESS THE PROBLEM BALANCING THE TIRES AND REPLACING 2 OF THE 4 TIRES, HE WAS INFORMED BY DEALER THE ROTORS WERE OUT OF ROUND AND LEFT TIRE WAS WORN. 2006 CHEVY COBALT KEY COMES OUT OF IGNITION AND IT STILL RUNS. KEY GETS LOCKED IN STEERING COLUMN AND WILL NOT RELEASE. HAVE TO WAIT ANYWHERE FROM 1 MINUTE TO 3 HOURS. RADIO SHORTED. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE (THIS HAPPENS WHILE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN). CAR WILL NOT START INDICATING A "LOCK KEY", HAVE TO CYCLE AUTOMATIC SHIFTER THROUGH GEARS BEFORE IT WILL START. CAR WILL NOT START AND JUST CLICKS. BATTERY READS 12.21 VOLTS. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP 3 TIMES AND IT IS STILL LEAKING. NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT WHY THE WATER IS LEAKING INTO THE CAR. 2) GAS TANK HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO FUEL LINES CRACKING. 3) POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND WAS ABOUT 130 MILES FROM HOME. 4) THE CAR WOULD DIE IF THE RPM'S GOT TOO LOW, THIS WAS CAUSED BY A CARBON BUILD UP ON THE IDLER. 5) THERE IS NO WAY TO CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND IT IS STARTING TO SLIP AND TAKE FOREVER TO UPSHIFT. 6) THE KEY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND WILL NOT COME OUT. 7) THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR GETS STUCK AND WILL NOT OPEN. 8) THE DOOR LATCH SOMETIMES MESSES UP AND THE DOOR DOES NOT CLOSE. 9) THE STEREO DISPLAY AND BUTTONS NO LONGER WORK. I CAN NOT USE THE CD PLAYER FOR FEAR OF LOSING THE CD FOR EVER SINCE THE EJECT BUTTON DOESN'T WORK. I CAN NOT SEE THE CLOCK OR WHAT STATION THE RADIO IS ON. WHEN TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS FROM THE AUTOMATIC TO THE MANUAL POSITION THE DASHBOARD INSTRUMENTATION DOES NOT LIGHT UP. THIS POSES A SAFETY HAZARD ON CLOUDY / FOGGY DAYS WHEN THE AUTOMATIC SENSOR SENSITIVITY IS SET TO HIGH TO ALLOW FOR PROPER LIGHTING OF THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASH INSTRUMENTATION. WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE SWITCHED TO MANUAL THIS SHOULD BYPASS THE AUTOMATIC SENSOR AND ALLOW FOR DASHBOARD ILLUMINATION HOWEVER THIS IS NOT THE CASE. *NM
I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON RT 8 IN BUTLER, PA. A DEER RAN INTO MY CAR, HITTING THE FRONT END. I WAS GOING ABOUT 50 MPH. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND GOT OUT TO LOOK AT MY CAR. THE FRONT BUMPER WAS COMPLETELY SMASHED, ALONG WITH THE BUMPER BEING FOLDED, AC CONDENSER BROKE, GRILLE BROKE,RADIATOR BROKE. I GOT BACK IN MY CAR AND NOTICED THE AIR BAG SYMBOL WAS ON BUT BY AIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. I WASN'T WEARING A SEAT BELT AND I WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE CAR. MY SEAT BELTS LOCKED UP FOR SOME REASON AND THE AIR BAGS DIDN'T GO OFF. I CALLED THE CHEVY COMPANY AND ASKED THEM WHY, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT YOU NEED TO HIT THE CAR IN A CERTAIN SPOT ON THE CAR, BUT A MECHANIC TOLD ME USUALLY IF THE REBAR IS CRACKED THE AIR BAGS GO OFF. THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. I PAID THE CAR OFF AND I DIDN'T HAVE FULL COVERAGE. SO MY CAR IS PRACTICALLY GARBAGE. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE A PROBLEM. TWO MONTHS LATER, WHILE TRAVELING 30 MPH, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE AND INJURY. THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT TAKEN AT THE SCENE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE MANUFACTURER SENT A REPRESENTATIVE TO READ THE BLACK BOX. ACCORDING TO THE BLACK BOX, THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 42 MPH WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED, FOUR SECONDS LATER THE VEHICLE MADE IMPACT AT 30 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP IS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM.
2006 COBALT DASH LIGHTS WILL NOT WORK WHEN LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON MANUALLY WHILE DRIVING WITH WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON AND IT IS CLOUDY OR FOGGY IT IS NOT DARK ENOUGH FOR AUTO LIGHTS TO COME ON BUT IT IS DARK ENOUGH THAT WITHOUT DASH LIGHTS YOU CAN NOT SEE HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING. *JB
ON MAY 28, 2006, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING SOLO IN A RENTED 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT ON AN UNDIVIDED HIGHWAY LEADING FROM THE NORTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE EXCELLENT: IT WAS 9 AM ON A SUNDAY MORNING WITH VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC, ON A STRAIGHT, DRY ROAD WITH OPEN COUNTRY ON EITHER SIDE. WITNESSES TO HIS ACCIDENT REPORT THAT AFTER HE PASSED A CAMPER AT A NORMAL SPEED FOR THAT HIGHWAY AND BEGAN TO PULL BACK IN FRONT OF IT, HIS CAR ABRUPTLY VEERED OFF THE LANE AND ONTO THE RIGHT SHOULDER, WHERE HE LOST CONTROL. THE CAR FISHTAILED, SKIDDED BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY, AND ROLLED OVER SEVERAL TIMES. OTHER DRIVERS STOPPED IMMEDIATELY TO HELP, BUT MY HUSBAND WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND DIED A WEEK LATER WITHOUT REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS. ALL WHO SAW THE ACCIDENT WERE AT A LOSS TO EXPLAIN HOW OR WHY IT OCCURRED. MY HUSBAND WAS AN EXPERIENCED AND VERY CAREFUL DRIVER, IN GOOD HEALTH AND ALERT THAT MORNING. THE RECENT NEWS ABOUT FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES IN COBALTS OF THAT ERA FINALLY PROVIDES A PLAUSIBLE EXPLANATION. HE HAD LONG LEGS AND COULD EASILY HAVE BUMPED THE STEERING COLUMN OR IGNITION KEYS DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF A CAR THAT WAS UNFAMILIAR TO HIM. I PURCHASED A 2006 CHEVY COBALT FROM THE GSA THROUGH THE NORWALK AUTO AUCTION (NORWALK, CALIFORNIA) TWO DAYS AGO. WHILE ON THE WAY HOME I EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE POWER FAILURE OF THE STEERING SYSTEM AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME INOPERABLE AND STRUGGLED TO MAKE IT TO THE EMERGENCY LANE WHERE I STOPPED. I MOVED THE WHEEL FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND WITHIN MOMENTS THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WENT OFF. I CONTINUED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM TWO MORE TIMES REPEATED THE SAME PROCESS WHILE ON MY 30+ MILE RETURN HOME. I HAVE VISITED NUMEROUS CONSUMER WEB SITES TIMES SINCE AND WITHIN THE LAST TWO DAYS I FIND THAT THIS IS A COMMON DEFECT. THIS IS PROBABLY WHY THE GOVERNMENT ISSUED VEHICLE WAS AUCTIONED OFF. ESTIMATES TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ARE REPORTED TO BE APPROXIMATELY $2,000.00. THE COMPLAINTS ARE NUMEROUS AND THE COST FOR REPLACEMENT IS OBSCENE. CONSUMERS REPORT THE REPEATED FAILURE OF THIS COMPONENT EVEN ON REPAIRED VEHICLES. APPARENTLY THE COMPONENT FAILS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES REPEATEDLY. I AM 6'1" AND 250LBS. AND I STRUGGLED TO CONTROL THE CAR, THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT MY WIFE AT 5'. 115LBS. WILL HAVE EVEN MORE DIFFICULTY TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. TWO OF MY FRIENDS AND I WENT TO BRUNCH ON SUNDAY, 5-21-06. I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON 5-13-06. IT IS A COBALT SS. WE PARKED THE CAR IN THE PARKING LOT. I COULD NOT REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. SINCE I HAD ANOTHER KEY, I TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AND LOCKED THE DOOR. WHEN WE CAME BACK ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, I OPENED THE DOOR AND WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY. THE DEALER STATES: "THEY INSPECTED SHIFTER AND LOCK CYLINDER PER BULLETIN 06-07-30-004B AND WAS UNABLE TO VERIFY THE COMPLAINT..." THEN I STARTED THE CAR WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND PUT IT IN REVERSE. THE CAR LUNGED BACKWARDS, I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND THEN PARK, THEN PUT THE HAND BRAKE ON, BUT NOTHING WOULD STOP IT UNTIL IT HIT A TREE BRACE IN THE PARKING LOT. THE DEALER STATED, "UNABLE TO DUPLICATE BUT REPROGRAMMED THE PCM WITH UPDATED CALIBRATIONS J6354..." OF COURSE, THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE DAMAGE TO MY 7-DAY OLD CAR. I AM LUCKY THERE WERE NO PEOPLE WALKING IN THE PARKING LOT AT THE TIME!! I OBTAINED 3 APPRAISALS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES, THE LOWEST BEING $790.91. I BELIEVE GM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. IT DEFINITELY WAS A SAFETY HAZARD AND I'M AFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. THANK YOU. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER AND ROLLS TO A STOP. THE CONTACT LOSES CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE POWER STEERING FAILS. ALL OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT DETECTED SMOKE. A MECHANIC STATED THAT ALL OF THE WIRING AND FUSES IN THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SHIFTER LOCKS IN POSITION AND THE KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF, WHICH CAUSES THE BATTERY TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE HAS TO BE CONNECTED TO A CHARGER ALL NIGHT IN ORDER TO BE DRIVEN THE NEXT DAY. IN MAY OF 2006, THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT LOCATE THE FAILURE. IN NOVEMBER OF 2007, AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, THE DEALER STATED THAT ALL THE WIRING IN THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE CHARGED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 49,600.

I APPLIED MY BRAKES AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. HOPING TO COAST DOWN THE EXIT AND PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO VEER THE CAR LEFT. THE CAR KEPT GOING STRAIGHT. I KEPT HITTING THE BRAKES AND TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT, BUT THE CAR DID NOT STOP, NOR DID IT TURN. WE CRASHED INTO THE GUARDRAIL AT ABOUT 50 MPH. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. COME TO FIND OUT MY CLUTCH BURNT UP AND MY STARTER THEN WAS FRIED AND THAT IT BUST A RING OF SOME SORT. MY CAR ONLY HAD 464 MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN SENT TO A DEALER AND GM DENIED IT IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR A MONTH AND THEY HAVE JUST TOLD ME ABOUT A WEEK AGO NOW THEY HAVE TO RE/EVALUATE IT AND THE AREN'T DOING CRAP IS SAY IT IS GOING TO COST ABOUT 1600 HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR STUFF THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR RECALLED OR SOMETHING. *JB
