WHILE PICKING UP MY FRIEND'S CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL, I HEARD A FEW BEEPS AND NOTICED POWER STEERING ON MY DASH TO WHICH THEN MY STEERING BECAME STIFF. IT RESETS AT START BUT HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT, ALMOST CONSTANT. I DID AN ONLINE SEARCH AND IT SEEMS THAT EVERY SINGLE COBALT HAS THIS PROBLEM AT SOME POINT IN ITS LIFETIME AND GM HAS NOT CARED TO FIX IT OR PAY FOR IT TO BE FIXED (HOPEFULLY THIS HAS CHANGED WITH NEW OWNERS). SO UNTIL I CAN FIND A CHEAP WAY TO FIX IT I AM DRIVING A DEATH TRAP. *TR

POWER STEERING SUDDENLY WENT OUT, NEARLY CAUSING A COLLISION. POWER STEERING CAME BACK AFTER ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON. *TR
I HAVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT SS. IT HAS 51,000 MILES AND THE POWER STEERING JUST WENT OUT SUDDENLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT I WAS BARELY ABLE TO TURN INTO A GAS STATION. I AM NOT VERY STRONG, THANKFULLY MY BROTHER WAS WITH ME. I WAS 50 MILES FROM MY HOME AND WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STEER HOME. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I GOT HOME AND RESEARCHED TO SEE HOW TO FIX THIS, AND I NOTICED SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD POSTED COMPLAINTS ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT WEBSITES STATING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH ON A WINDY AND DANGEROUS MOUNTAIN ROAD, LOST THE POWER STEERING AND ALMOST WENT OVER THE EDGE OF THE MOUNTAIN. TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON AND POWER STEERING SEEMED TO WORK OK, BUT KEEPS GOING OUT. VERY DANGEROUS AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND TRYING TO GET INTO THE DEALER ASAP. *TR
WE HAVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT IN WHICH WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. REALLY SCARY AND DANGEROUS. SINCE GM HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS FAILURE SINCE 2005 AND NOBODY HAS DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT IS EVEN SCARIER. IF YOU TURN CAR OFF AND BACK ON POWER STEERING WILL WORK AGAIN ONLY FOR PERIOD OF TIME THEN SHUT OFF AGAIN WHILE DRIVING. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON-LINE. I HAVE AN 07 COBALT I BOUGHT BRAND NEW AND THE POWER STEERING HAS STARTED GOING OUT WHILE I AM DRIVING. IF I TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY BUT THE POWER STEERING GOES BACK OUT ABOUT 45 SECONDS LATER. *TW
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS UNDER 40 MPH THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE CLOSEST DEALER WHO REPAIRED THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND THE STEERING COLUMN. THE STEERING MOTOR WAS ALSO REPLACED. THERE WERE NO ADDITIONAL FAILURES SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNDER 47,000.
2007 CHEVROLET COBALT -- IN DECEMBER 2009 THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE EXITING INTERSTATE. THAT WAS NEAR THE END OF A 2-HOUR TRIP. THE NEXT DAY IT WAS WORKING AGAIN. SINCE THAT FIRST INCIDENT THE POWER STEERING HAS STARTED FAILING MORE FREQUENTLY (ALMOST EVERY TIME) AND ON SHORTER TRIPS. TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING THE CAR RESTARTS THE POWER STEERING, HOWEVER SOMETIMES IT RECURS WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE CAR IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND I'M AFRAID IT WILL LEAD TO A WRECK. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT WE CALLED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEREFORE WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. (THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, NOT A WORN OUT PART.) THE CAR IS SCHEDULED FOR REPAIR NEXT WEEK AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID COULD COST ABOUT $400. *TR

IT WAS RUNNING SMOOTH UNTIL ABOUT ROUGHLY A YEAR THEN JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AND SAID NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL ITS RECALLED. YOU CAN'T STEER IT, YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR CAR AND HOPE IT GOES AWAY. IT SEEMS LIKE WHEN THE ENGINE OR THE CAR IS WARM IT GOES OUT. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT WHO HAS TO COMMUTE FROM HOME BY GOING ON HIGHWAYS AND BUSY STREETS THIS ISN'T SAFE! PARENTS BUY THESE CARS FOR THEIR TEENAGERS. EVERYONE WHO OWN THIS CAR HAS THIS ISSUE AND WAITING FOR AN ANSWER. MANY LIVES ARE BEING PUT AT RISK BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE DON'T WAIT UNTIL AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS AND LIVE(S) ARE TAKEN AWAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR ENOUGH PEOPLE TO COMPLAIN. PLEASE RECALL IT AND GET IT SOLVED. I HAVE HAD MY 2007 COBALT BACK TO THE DEALER SO MANY TIMES. ONE OF WHICH WAS FOR STRUT MOUNTS, CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS, INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT, SWAY BAR LINKS, ALOT WATER COMING IN THROUGH THE CENTER BRAKE LIGHT. THOSE WERE REPLACED AND VERY BAD AT 48K MILES THEY TOLD ME IT HAD REACHED THE DANGEROUS LEVEL AND THAT THEY'RE GLAD I BROUGHT IT BACK BEFORE SOMEBODY GOT HURT. ALSO THE AC SMELLED TERRIBLE AT 12K MILES, IT WAS IN THE DEALER 7 TIMES FOR THAT TERRIBLE SMELL. THE LAST OF WHICH TOOK THEM A WEEK TO PUT IN AN EVAPORATOR WHICH ONLY CURED THE ISSUE FOR 3 WEEKS. IT STILL SMELLS AWFUL WHEN THE A/C IS RUNNING. AS FAR AS THE CAR'S SUSPENSION, SINCE DECEMBER IT HAS BEEN VERY HARD TO MANAGE THE CAR ON THE ROAD. ITS ALL OVER THE PLACE, I'VE ALMOST SIDE SWIPED A FEW SEMI'S AND I CROSS INTO OTHER LANES ALMOST EVERY DAY I DRIVE IT. ITS VERY HARD TO HANDLE. ITS IS JUST ABOUT IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THE CAR GO STRAIGHT, ITS ALWAYS DRIFTING ALL OVER THE ROAD NOW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHENEVER THE CONTACT WOULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT ANY SPEED SHE NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING WOULD SUDDENLY STOP WORKING MAKING THE VEHICLE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 46000.
I HAVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT AND I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT DUE TO LOOSING THE POWER STEERING ON MY CAR. THE POWER STEERING IS ELECTRIC SO IT WAS HARD FOR ANYONE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH MY CAR, I HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, ON MY DASHBOARD. I RESTARTED MY CAR AND THE POWER STEERING KICK BACK IN, BUT AFTER THAT ONE TIME, THE POWER STEERING WOULD GO OUT EVERY THREE SECONDS AND THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO BUT RESTART THE CAR NO MATTER WHERE I WAS ONCE THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD SON AND THIS SCARED ME EXTREMELY BADLY. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WHO WORKS DAILY TO PROVIDE FOR MY SON, AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT I HAVE MY VEHICLE. UNFORTUNATELY THE DEALER HAD TO KEEP MY CAR AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY DOES NOT GIVE YOU A CAR WHILE YOUR CAR IS IN THE SHOP, THE FUNNY THING IS NEITHER DOES CHEVY, ALTHOUGH THEY KNEW WHAT THE ISSUE WAS THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE A CAR FOR ME TO USE WHILE THEY HAD MY CAR. THIS ALSO HAPPENED RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, SO THE CHRISTMAS MONEY I HAD SAVED FOR MY SONS CHRISTMAS WENT INTO GETTING MY STEERING FIXED WHICH COST ME $600. SO NEEDLESS TO SAY, THERE WENT CHRISTMAS. AND ACCORDING TO CHEVY I HAD TO PAY THE ENTIRE LUMP SUM BEFORE I COULD EVEN MOVE MY CAR, SO I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY THE ENTIRE AMOUNT. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN CHEVY FOR THIS ISSUE, MY SONS SAFETY IS UTTERLY IMPORTANT TO ME AND I ONLY GOT THIS CAR BECAUSE I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION IT WAS A SAFE CAR, HAD I KNOWN ABOUT THIS POWER STEERING ISSUE I WOULD NEVER HAVE CHOSEN CHEVY IN THE FIRST PLACE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH AND MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND THE VIN WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 64,326.
THE GEAR SHIFT IS LOOSE AND WILL NOT ALWAYS DISENGAGE THE KEY LOCK. THE LIGHTS ON THE GEAR PANEL FLASH OFF AND ON. I HAVE ALREADY HAD THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE THIS ONCE BEFORE AND IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF GOING OUT AGAIN. THE LAST TIME IT GRADUALLY GOT WORSE UNTIL I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AT ALL. I SOMETIMES HAVE TO MOVE THE GEAR AROUND UNTIL IT MAKES A CONNECTION AND THEN IT WILL RELEASE THE KEY. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS IN 2008. *TR
2007 CHEVY COBALT LT, BOUGHT NEW! HAD A BUSHING WEAR AWAY AND WAS TOLD I CANNOT JUST REPLACE THE BUSHING ON THIS CAR SO I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. ALSO REPLACED FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS, DID ALL OF THIS IN MARCH 2010. IT IS NOW JAN 2011 AND I NEED TO REPLACE EVERYTHING AGAIN!! IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A YEAR. THIS HAS COST ME WELL OVER $1000. EXTREMELY HARD TO CONTROL THE CAR, IT WONDERS WHERE EVER IT WANTS AND ALSO VERY EASY TO OVER CORRECT. WE NEED A RECALL!!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. A TRUCK REAR-ENDED HER VEHICLE , WHICH CAUSED HER TO CRASH INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. NONE OF THE AIRS BAG DEPLOYED. ANOTHER OCCUPANT IN THE VEHICLE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
2007 CHEVY COBALT WHILE DRIVING THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM GOES HAYWIRE. THE DOORS BEGIN LOCKING AND UNLOCKING ON THEIR OWN, LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY SPORADICALLY, AND THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR READS A MESSAGE REGARDING THE POWER STEERING. THE POWER STEERING IS THEN HARD TO CONTROL AND IT SEEMS THE VEHICLE HAS TROUBLE ACCELERATING. PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE DECEMBER 2009 AND CAN OCCUR SEVERAL TIMES A DAY TO SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM SHORT TERM SEEMS TO BE TO TURN THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF MULTIPLE TIMES. DOING SO IS NOT ALWAYS CONVENIENT, SUCH AS DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING. I FEEL THIS IS VERY UNSAFE AND AS A WOMEN WHO IS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT, WITH A DAILY LONG HIGHWAY COMMUTE-SOMETHING MUST BE DONE RIGHT AWAY! *TR

INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING A 2007 CHEVY COBALT WITH ONLY 49000 MILES ON IT. TO FIX IT TEMPORARILY YOU RESTART THE ENGINE, BUT WILL TURN OFF AGAIN A FEW MILES LATER. TO FIX IT YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WHICH REQUIRES REPLACING THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH HE EXPERIENCED DIFFICULT STEERING AND THEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. SHE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND SHE WAS ADVISED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY $800.00 DOLLARS TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE SINCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 40000.

POWER STEERING COLUMN, GEARS WHEEL RATTLE, AND ARE LOOSE. FIX IS 2K. OUT OF MY POCKET TO REPLACE IT. THIS IS CRITICAL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 5-10 MPH HE LOST POWER STEERING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED.. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,500. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VIN NUMBER WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
2007 CHEVROLET COBALT WITH POWER STEERING SYSTEM FAILURE. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 67,000 MILES AND HAD NOT HAD ANY ISSUES WITH IT UNTIL THIS RANDOMLY HAPPENED ON THE STREET. A "POWER STEERING" MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE DASHBOARD OF THE CAR AND SEEMINGLY THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKED UP. THIS WAS WITH MY 2 YEAR OLD NEPHEW IN THE CAR. I AM GLAD I WAS NOT ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. AFTER THAT OCCURRENCE IT HAS CONTINUALLY HAPPENED OVER THE LAST 2 WEEKS EVERY TIME THE CAR IS USED. IT IS RANDOM AND THERE IS NO PATTERN TO WHAT SETS IT OFF. THE POWER STEERING FAILS AND IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THAT WAY. I CANNOT AFFORD TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PAY THE $2000 THEY WANT TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE, SO THIS IS STILL OCCURRING. I AM TRYING TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO GET THIS FIXED BUT THIS NEEDS ACTION AGAINST AS THERE ARE COUNTLESS OTHERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THIS AS WELL. *TR
WE BOUGHT A NEW 2007 COBALT AND NOW AT 43,000 MILES ONLY 7,000 MILES PAST WARRANTY THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT YOU CAN SHUT CAR OFF AND RESTART AND IT FIXES THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BUT THIS IS A ONGOING ISSUE WITH OTHER COBALTS WE HAVE CONTACTED GM AND THEY ARE UNWILLING TO FIX IT SO THAT'S WHY WE ARE HERE. *TR
ON DECEMBER 08, 2009, I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE WAS ACTIVATED ON THE DASH DISPLAY PANEL FOLLOWED BY THE MALFUNCTIONING OF THE POWER STEERING ASSIST. I PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY AND TO A CONVENIENCE STORE TO CHECK THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS NO PLACE TO ADD POWER STEERING FLUID I DISCOVERED THAT THE POWER STEERING IS REALLY POWER ASSISTED MECHANICALLY ASSISTED AND THEY PROBLEM WENT AWAY BY TURNING OFF THE CAR AND THEN RESTARTING THE CAR; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURS ONCE ON THE HWY. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO THE PUBLIC AND SHOULD BE ADDRESS IMMEDIATELY BY GM BEFORE SOME GETS KILLED. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING ON THE VEHICLE FAILED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH. THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND ON SO THAT THE POWER STEERING COULD RESET ITSELF. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR UNTIL THE CONTACT REACHED HER DESTINATION. WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE WORDS POWER STEERING FLASHES ON THE SCREEN UNDER THE SPEEDOMETER, AND MY POWER STEERING SUDDENLY GOES OUT ON MY 2007 CHEVY COBALT. WHEN I TURN OFF MY CAR AND TURN IT BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WORKS AGAIN. BUT THE PROBLEM OF THE POWER STEERING SHUTTING DOWN AGAIN HAPPENS REGULARLY AT RANDOM INTERVALS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE CONTACT SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTARTED SO THAT THE POWER STEERING WOULD RESET ITSELF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED CONSISTENTLY FOR TWO DAYS. THE DEALER AGREED TO RESEARCH THE PROBLEMS AND ADVISE THEM ACCORDINGLY. WHILE DRIVING MY CAR , THE DASH WILL DING THREE TIMES, FLASH "POWER STEERING" AND THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP. I WILL HAVE TO PULL OVER, TURN THE ENGINE OFF, AND RESTART THE CAR. UPON RESTARTING THE CAR, IT WILL WORK FINE. THIS WILL HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW. IT IS A HASSLE WHILE DRIVING, I'VE HAD TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TO TURN MY CAR OFF AT TIMES WHEN THERE ISN'T A SHOULDER TO PULL OFF ON. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS A LOT WITH 2006-2007 MODEL COBALTS, COST UPWARD T $1000-$2000 TO FIX AND OBVIOUSLY NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. *TR
POWER STEERING LIGHT POPS ON AND POWER STEERING GOES OUT. CAR IS UNDER THREE YEARS OLD. THIS IS A KNOWN VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. HAPPENS OVER AND OVER, ONCE YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON IT WILL WORK AGAIN UNTIL THE NEXT OCCURRENCE WHICH COULD BE TWO MINUTES LATER OR FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THIS SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT THE QUOTE TO GET IT REPAIRED WAS AROUND $2000. THESE SHOULD BE RECALLED!!! *TR
I WAS DRIVING TO TN FROM FLORIDA ON I95 IN SC WHEN THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2007 CHEVY COBALT WENT OUT. I PULLED OFF AT EXIT 60 TO BUY POWER STEERING FLUID (THINKING THAT WAS THE PROBLEM) TURNS OUT THE COBALT HAS ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING! ANYWAY, TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AS I COULDN'T JUST SIT AT THE EXIT FOREVER (IT WAS VERY LATE AT NITE). POWER STEERING WORKED FINE! BUT ONLY FOR A FEW MINUTES. IT WENT OUT AGAIN AFTER I GOT BACK ON I-95! SO I PULLED OVER AGAIN, TURNED THE CAR OFF THEN RESTARTED AND IT WORKED! BACK ON INTERSTATE, IT GOES OUT AGAIN! SO THIS WENT ON AND IS STILL THE CASE (IT IS NOW MONDAY AND I MADE IT BACK TO FLORIDA AFTER A VERY LONG DRIVE DUE TO NOT HAVING POWER STEERING AND NO CHOICE BUT TO COME HOME.) CALLED DEALERSHIP AND CHEVY CORPORATE AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND ARE NOT SURE THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE READ MANY BLOGS AND POSTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND FEEL IT SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE RECALL LIST AND TAKEN CARE OF BY CHEVY AND NOT THE CONSUMER! THE VEHICLE IS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT WITH APPROXIMATELY 62,000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS PURCHASED USED A WEEK BEFORE INCIDENT OCCURRED. MY DAUGHTER HAD JUST GOT OFF WORK AND WAS STARTING TO DRIVE HOME WHEN SHE NOTICED POWER STEERING FAILURE MESSAGE COME ACROSS THE MESSAGE BOARD ON THE DASH. AT THE SAME TIME SHE FELT THE STEERING GET HARD TO CONTROL. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND STOP THE VEHICLE WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY DAUGHTER CALLED HOME AND I WENT TO HER LOCATION, THINKING POWER STEERING FLUID MUST BE LOW. TO MY SURPRISE I LEARNED IT HAD NO PUMP AND IT WAS ELECTRICAL. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND MESSAGE WAS OUT AND STEERING APPEARED TO BE FINE. I DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY I WENT OUT AND AFTER STARTING VEHICLE NOTICED THE MESSAGE COMING ACROSS THE MESSAGE BOARD READ STEERING PROBLEMS. I TRIED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT IT WAS VERY HARD TO MANEUVER THE STEERING. IT HAD NO POWER ASSIST IN THE STEERING. IT BECAME SPORADIC OFF AND ON OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND LEARNED INORDER TO FIX PROBLEM, THE POWER ASSIST STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACE. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN WHICH HOUSED THE POWER ASSIST COMPUTER MODULE AND THE ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST MOTOR. OUR TOTAL EXPENSE WAS $730.27. I LEARNED FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT 2005 THRU 2007 MODEL YEARS WERE KNOWN TO THEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH POWER ASSIST STEERING GOING OUT. I STILL HAVE THE OLD STEERING UNIT THAT WAS REPLACED. I READ WHERE NHTSA WAS LOOKING INTO THE STEERING PROBLEM. I JUST WANTED TO LET AGENCY KNOW I TOO HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING GOING OUT. *TR
BEGINNING ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY POWER STEERING. IT WILL ARBITRARILY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AND THE SCREEN ON THE DASH BOARD WILL FLASH "POWER STEERING". I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND SHUT THE CAR OFF, AND UPON RESTART THE PROBLEM IS FIXED. SO FAR I HAVE NOT HAD ANY REAL SAFETY ISSUES, BUT THIS WILL CAUSE A SEVERE ISSUE ONE OF THESE DAYS WHILE I AM ON THE ROADS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER EXERTED GREAT EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE TO RESUME OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE FAILURE COULD POSSIBLY BE CONTRIBUTED TO THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,692. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME A 250LB MALE TO TURN OR CONTROL IT EVEN JUMPS AROUND ON ITS OWN, IN MY 2007 CHEVY COBALT. I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE HAPPENING TO PEOPLE EVERYWHERE FROM POST ON THE INTERNET. I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY AND WELL BEING OF ALL DRIVER'S AND PASSENGERS IN A VEHICLE THAT HAS CHEVROLET ELECTRIC POWER STEERING AS WELL AS THE VEHICLES AROUND THEM. IF IT HASN'T YET IT WILL COST LIVES IF THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT GET RESOLVED. OPEN ON WEEKENDS, SO I GAVE UP AND DROVE IT BACK TO FLORIDA ON SUNDAY (TOOK 10 HOURS). ANYWAY, CALLED LOCAL DEALERSHIP, CHEVY CORPORATE AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA... UNFORTUNATELY I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TAKE IT TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THEN CALL CORPORATE BACK WHERE THEY SAID THEY "MIGHT BE ABLE TO ASSIST WITH REPAIRS BUT WOULDN'T KNOW UNTIL DIAGNOSTICS WERE DONE..." DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THEY "BELIEVE" THE PROBLEM COULD BE SOLVED BY REPLACING THE POWER STEERING MOTOR IF I WOULD ONLY PAY $350 FOR LABOR (THEY WOULD GENEROUSLY DONATE THE MOTOR...) I DECLINED (FOR NOW ANYWAY) AS WE WILL TRY TO REPAIR IT OURSELVES... I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR THIS AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO AS THE CAR ISN'T THAT OLD. THE WARRANTY JUST RAN OUT IN SEPTEMBER AS SEEMS TO BE THE CASE FOR MANY WHO'S BLOGS I HAVE READ. THEY ALSO NOTED ON THE SUMMARY THAT THE MOTOR MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM AND IF IT DIDN'T THEN THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN FOR ANOTHER $800 PLUS LABOR !! MY CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED AND IS STILL DANGEROUS SO I DON'T DRIVE IT UNLESS I JUST HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE AND HAVE NO OTHER OPTION. *TR
