MULTIPLE RECALL FAILURES: 2009 CHEVY COBALT LT IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE, AIRBAGS FAILURE TO DEPLOY, POWER STEERING FAILURE, BRAKE FAILURE, GEAR BOX FAILURE. IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE CAUSE VEHICLE TO STALL, VEHICLE WAS THEN HIT IN REAR BY 16 WHEEL TRACTOR TRAILER, THUS CAUSING DRIVER TO BE KNOCKED IN THE BACK SIT OF VEHICLE, INJURY TO HEAD, TO INSIDE OF MOUTH, BRAKING OF TEETH ON BOTH SIDES OF MOUTH, NECK INJURY, RIGHT AND LEFT SHOULDER INJURY, BACK INJURY, AND NEVER DAMAGE TO RIGHT SHOULDER PLATE, DRIVER IS IN CONTINUOUS PAIN SINCE THIS ACCIDENT APPROX 11 MONTHS. DRIVER STILL IN POSSESSION OF VEHICLE BECAUSE HE IS TOTALED DISABLE, AND DOES NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT WHAT CORRECT MEASURES TO TAKE. NATIONWIDE INSURANCE DECLARED VEHICLE A TOTALED LOSS, REQUEST DRIVER TO GIVE THEM POWER OF ATTORNEY RIGHTS TO PAY OFF CURRENT LIEN HOLDER. OWNER FELTED UNEASED TO DO SO, THEREFORE HAS CONTINUOUSLY PAID ON VEHICLE FOR 11 MONTHS AND HAS BEEN UNABLE TO DRIVE VEHICLE. I NEED HELP, I ONCE WORKED FOR REGION IV NTSB AGENCY HERE IN ATLANTA I HAVE NEVER FELT SO VICTIMIZED IN MY LIFE BY GM AND NATIONWIDE. I REALLY NEED DIRECTION AND HAVE SOUGHT LEGAL. BUT GM COMPENSATION PROGRAM WILL NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CONSUMERS LAWYER PER PROTOCOLS FOR COMPENSATORY DAMAGES. *TR
TAKATA RECALL, I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE 2 WEEKS AFTER 2 RECALLS WERE REPAIRED ON IT. IT WAS RUSH HOUR I WENT TO PUSH ON MY BREAKS AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE CAR TURNED OFF, AT THIS POINT IM FREAKING OUT. I CONTACT CHEVY SERVICE FOR ASSISTANCE AND THEY ADVISE THAT THEY CAN NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE RECALL WAS REPAIRED THEY ALSO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS TO DANGEROUS FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES. SO I ASK THE BANK TO REFINANCE ME ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE THIS CAR WAS WAY TOO DANGEROUS TO PUT MY BABY IN, THEY SAID NO DUE TO MY CREDIT. I THEN HAD THEM REPO THE VEHICLE BECAUSE I WOULD NOT CONTINUE TO PAY FOR A DEATH TRAP. NOW THEY ARE SUING ME FOR THE REMANDING BALANCE ON THE VEHICLE. I AM GOING TO COURT AND WONDERING IF I HAVE A CASE.
I WAS TRYING TO START MY CAR AND TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND MY CAR WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BATTERY AND TRIED TO TAKE THE KEY OUT, BUT IT WAS STUCK AND WOULDN'T COME OUT. I GOOGLED HOW TO TAKE IT OUT AND THAT WORKED, WE JUMPED THE CAR THINKING IT WAS THE BATTERY, BUT WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL ALLTURNED ON. THIS TELLS ME THAT THE CAR'S IGNITOR/SHIFTER WAS STUCK IN THE "ON" POSITION. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF I WERE ANYWHERE BUT HOME. *TR
MY CAR RADIO AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO AUX ON ITS OWN. THIS IS NOT JUST WHEN I GO OVER A BUMP, OR WHEN I'M DRIVING. I CAN BE SITTING IN A PARKING LOT LISTENING TO A RADIO WAITING AND OUT OF NOWHERE THE RADIO CUTS OUT AND I LOOK AND ITS IN AUX MODE. I FIRST NOTICED IT DOING THIS WHEN I WOULD COME OUT TO MY CAR. I HAVE A REMOTE START AND MY RADIO IS ALWAYS ON BUT THE VOLUME TURNED DOWN. FOR THE PAST MONTH OR TWO I NOTICED WHEN I CAME OUT TO MY CAR IT WAS ON AUX. I KNEW I DIDN'T LEAVE IT THAT WAY, SO I WAS SO CONFUSED ON HOW THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED. I WOULD SWITCH IT TO RADIO AND WHILE I DROVE TO MY DESTINATION IT WAS FINE. THEN IT STARTED TO GET WORSE, HAPPENING WHILE I'M SITTING IN MY CAR IN THE MORNING. I'D TURN IT TO RADIO AND SECONDS LATER IT WAS SWITCHING TO AUX. I'D BE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND OUT OF NOWHERE I LOSE THE RADIO AND LOOK AND IT'S ON AUX. IT'S NOT HAPPENING JUST BECAUSE I'M DRIVING OVER A BUMP, OR ITS GETTING BUMPED SOMEHOW. IT NOW HAPPENS EVERYTIME I USE MY VEHICLE. IF I'VE REMOTED STARTED MY CAR, I ALWAYS COME OUT TO IT ON AUX, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW FOR A FACT I HAVE NOT LEFT IT THAT WAY. I STARTED JUST TURNING THE RADIO OFF WHEN I GET OUT OF MY CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH AND DROVE OVER A PATCH OF ICE. THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A GUARD RAIL AND AN EMBANKMENT. THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR THEN OPENED INDEPENDENTLY AND CAUSED THE DRIVER TO BE THROWN FROM THE VEHICLE WHILE SECURED IN THE SEAT BELT. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER WAS AIR LIFTED TO THE HOSPITAL AND TREATED FOR A BRAIN INJURY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 14V047000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) BUT DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
WHILE PULLING OUT OF THE GAS STATION, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE POWER STEERING NO LONGER WORKED. IT HAS NOT WORKED SINCE THEN. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 25 - 30 MPH WHEN WITH OUT WARNING MY 2009 CHEVY COBALT BEGAN TO SPIN IN THE MOST VIOLENT SPIN I HAVE EVER BEEN IN A VEHICLE. THE BRAKES WERE NOT STOPPING ME THE REAR OF THE CAR THEN SLID AROUND AND SLAMMED MY CAR INTO A POST OR CHAIN LINK FENCE HITTING IT HARD.THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR WAS CREASED DOWN THE WHOLE SIDE, THE FRONT QUARTER PANEL WAS ALL RIPPED UP AND THE FRONT PASSENGER HEADLIGHT WAS COMPLETELY SMASHED AND BROKEN. WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED MY HAND WAS TWISTED IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE THE CAR WAS SPINNING AND THE FORCE OF THE CAR HITTING SPRAINED MY BACK. NO AIR BAGS WERE SET OFF AND I WAS BROUGHT TO THE ER BY AMBULANCE. I HAVE BEGUN TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY IGNITION SINCE THIS ACCIDENT. MY KEY GETS STUCK IN THE ACCS POSITION AND I CAN NOT MOVE IT EITHER WAY. I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE CAR SITS FOR A WHILE SOMETIMES HOURS BEFORE IT WILL UNLOCK. VERY SCARED TO DRIVE IN THIS CAR NOW. *TR
MY TIRES CONSISTENTLY LOSE AIR AT AN ACCELERATED RATE. DESPITE REPLACING ALL TIRES, THIS PROBLEM PERSISTS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT REPLACING THE RIMS WILL RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I FEEL THAT THIS RECOMMENDATION IS PREMATURE GIVEN THE AGE OF THE CAR. THE RIMS SHOULD NOT HAVE CORRODED SO MUCH TO THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO REPLACE THEM AFTER 5 YEARS. I HAVE TO PUMP AIR INTO MY TIRES 2 TIMES A WEEK TO MAINTAIN A SAFE PRESSURE FOR DRIVING. *TR
DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRICAL MOTOR WAS ALREADY REPLACED BACK IN 2010 UNDER MY WARRANTY. NOW, THEY STATE THIS "PROBLEM" WITH THE EPS WAS NEVER A "NATIONAL RECALL" PROBLEM AND ALL REPAIRS WILL BE AT MY EXPENSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE WHEEL BEARING FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO EMIT A LOUD NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TWO FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,998.
I JUST FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT DUE TO FAILURE WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR / SYSTEM. AS I LOOKED IT UP I FOUND 2 ADDITIONAL RECALLS WHICH CHEVROLET WAS SUPPOSED TO CONTACT ME ON ALL 3. I WAS NOT CONTACTED, AND DO NOT KNOW IF MY CAR HAS HAD THE REPAIRS DONE PRIOR TO ME PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2011. THE 2 OTHER RECALLS ARE AS FOLLOWS. SHIFTER CABLE PROBLEM WITH CAR NOT IN PROPER GEAR, CLIP ON CABLE, IF NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY, CHEVROLET IS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE CABLE. ALSO, A FUEL LEAKAGE CAN OCCUR, CAUSING A FIRE, DUE TO A PLASTIC SUPPLY AND/OR RETURN PORT BREAKAGE ON THE FUEL PUMP MODULE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING IN A LOCAL, WHEN ALL THE SUDDEN, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER STARTED PUMPING WATER BY ITSELF AND THE WIPERS WENT ON BY ITSELF. WHEN ALL THE WATER WAS PUMPED OUT, THE WAS A BURNING ODOR AND SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT THROUGH THE AC VENTS. I TURN THE AC OFF; PARKED ON THE SIDE, OPENED THE HOOP AND THERE WAS NOT ANY SMOKE COMING OUT ANY WHERE. I RETURNED INSIDE THE CAR TURNED ON, KEPT THE WINDOWS DOWN BECAUSE OF THE SMELL INSIDE, AND WENT BACK HOME. I REFILLED THE WINDSHIELD PUMP WITH CLEANING FLUID, TURNED THE CAR ON, TRIED THE WINDSHIELD AND THE ARE OK. I NOTICED RIGHT AFTER THAT MY AC AND OR HEATER IS NOT WORKING AT ALL. I CHECK WITH A MECHANIST WHO TOLD ME AFTER SEVERAL TEST, THAT IT SEEMS THE AC/HEATER CONTROL PANEL WHEN BAD. THIS INCIDENT SCARED THE EXPLETIVE OUT OF MY SON WHO WAS IN THE CAR WITH ME AT THAT TIME. *TR

THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 14V04700 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 14V17100 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
POWER STEERING WAS GOING OUT SEVERAL TIMES OVER A FEW WEEKS. IT WOULD JUST QUIT WORKING AND MY DAUGHTER WOULD HAVE TO STEER HARD. IF SHE SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES THEN RESTARTED THE CAR IT WOULD FIX IT. WE HAD HER TAKE IT IN WHICH THEY SAID IT WAS NOT UNDER A RECALL AND CHARGED US $239.00 TO FIX THIS. THEY SAID IT SHOWED IT HAD BEEN FIXED ONCE BEFORE IN THE PAST. I SEE THIS HAS A RECALL NOW FOR THE EXACT THING THAT WAS WRONG WITH HER CAR AND I FEEL I SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THIS FIXED CORRECTLY AND REIMBURSED FOR THE PROBLEM. I FEEL SINCE THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE POWER STEERING HAS BEEN FIXED IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR
LOST POWER IN STEERING IT WAS REPLACED 13 MONTHS PRIOR FOR A RECALL. BEFORE THAT STEERING LOCKED UP ON US. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG FUEL ODOR EMITTED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AND THERE WAS A VISIBLE FUEL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS FRACTURED AND CAUSED THE FUEL TO LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 12V459000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,000.

THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME HARD TO TURN; HOWEVER, THE STEERING WHEEL REGAINED NORMAL FUNCTION WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. I WAS DRIVING AND PULLED UP TO A STOP SIGN AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO GET IT FIXED THIS TIME BECAUSE IT REMAINS DEFECTIVE EVEN AFTER THE RECALL WAS CLAIMED IN 2010. I THINK IT IS MORALLY WRONG OF THEM TO NOT FIX THE SYSTEM CONTINUOUSLY FREE OF CHARGE KNOWING THE UNIT IS CONSISTENTLY DEFECTIVE. *TR

POWER STEERING LIGHT COME ON IN THE DASH, WHEEL HARD TO TURN, DIFFICULT TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AT 35 MPH, READ MANUAL AND FIND OUT IT HAS ELECTRIC STEERING ASSIST MOTOR, CALLED DEALER FOR RECALLS OR WARRANTY, NONE. AMAZING HOW WE CAN SELL VEHICLES THAT DON'T EVEN MAKE IT TO 50K MILES BEFORE TEARING INTO TODAYS THIN WALLETS. VERY SAD.
I DROVE MY CAR AROUND 7:15 AM UNTIL ABOUT 10:00 AM. EVERYTHING WAS FINE. WHEN I STARTED IT UP AGAIN I HEARD THIS LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. IT SOUNDED LIKE A DIESEL TRUCK. MY FLEX PIPE WAS DISCONNECTED. THIS ATTACHED TO THE MANIFOLD. I DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING TO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. I ASKED THE REPAIR MAN WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED IT AND HE DIDN'T HAVE AN ANSWER.
AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 4 MILES AND THEN BACK 4 MILES PARKED CAR. NOTICED GASOLINE DRIPPING IN THE DRIVEWAY. CALLED SERVICE GARAGE AND THEY SAID GET A TOW TRUCK,DANGEROUS TO EVEN TRY AND START CAR, ONE SPARK AND IT COULD EXPLODE. FOUND PROBLEM WITH FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP. HAD ONLY HAD CAR A FEW MONTHS. GARAGE REPLACED FUEL PUMP AND REPLACEMENT WAS DEFECTIVE ALSO. REPLACED IT AND PUT ON A NEW FUEL TANK. SEPT GOT A GM RECALL #12190 NOTICE. TO TAKE IT IN FOR FREE REPAIR TO A DEALER AROUND 40 MILES FROM MY HOUSE. HAD ALREADY PAID ALMOST $800 TO GARAGE WHEN I HAD THE CAR REPAIRED. NOW I HAVE A RECALL NOTICE 12045 BUT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS FOR. CALLED RECOMMENDED GARAGE TO SEE IF THEY HAD PART TO REPAIR (CALLED TWICE NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM). STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THE GAS PUMP HAD GONE OUT I BELIEVE A COUPLE OF YEARS EARLIER AND THIS WAS THE SECOND ROUND WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. GO TO A SITE ON LINE THERE IS ONE THAT COBALT DEALERS HAVE REPORTED THE PROBLEMS THEY HAVE HAD, THAT IS HOW I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PRIOR RECALLI THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT IT IS THEY ARE RECALLING THE CAR FOR. IN THE FIRST GAS PROBLEM WE WERE LUCKY NOT TO HAVE HAD THE CAR EXPLODE. HAD I BEEN DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IT WOULD HAVE MADE A BIG NOISE. *TR

THE FAILURE OCCURRED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V047000 (AIR BAG, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WHEN I DRIVE MY CAR OVER 60 I GET A SWAY SIDE TO SIDE AND I FEEL LIKE ITS GOING TO SWAY IN TO ANOTHER CAR WHEN I GO BY THEM. I HAD IT IN A CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED AND THEY DID NOTHING BUT PUT A PULL IN THE CAR AND IT SILL SWAYS. I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE RACK IN THE CAR AND OR THE ELECTRICAL STEERING IN THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS " ITS BEEN FIXED IN THE FIRST RECALL" WELL I AM SAYING ITS NOT SO I THINK IT SHOULD BE RECALLED AGAIN AND FIXED RIGHT THIS TIME.... *TR
I TOOK MY 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT 1LT SEDAN TO THE DEALERSHIP FROM WHERE I PURCHASED IT FROM TODAY TO GET MY VEHICLE INSPECTED AS REQUIRED PER MY STATE. PRIOR TO TODAY, FOR ABOUT THE PAST WEEK OR SO, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WENT TO AUTOZONE AND THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT SAYING A CAM SHAFT POSITION SENSOR NEEDED REPLACEMENT. REPLACED IT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK THEN CAME BACK ON. (REPLACED BOTH OF THE SENSORS TO BE SAFE) CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD TURN OFF FOR DAYS THEN RANDOMLY COME ON. IF YOU GOOGLE "COBALT STRUT LEAKING", THERE ARE MANY RESULTS, YET NO RECALL. THIS ISN'T JUST COMMON IN MY VEHICLE'S MODEL YEAR BUT WITH ALL COBALTS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. SHE EMPLOYED THE ASSISTANCE OF AN ASSOCIATE, WHO WAS AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, AND DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE TO BE THE FUEL PUMP. HE ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP HAD BEEN BURNED OFF AND CAUSED WIRES TO BE EXPOSED, EFFECTIVELY CREATING A TICKING TIME BOMB. WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AT 102 AND AMSTERDAM AVENUE IN NYC, I NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING WHEEL GOT KIND OF HARD BUT IT STILL WORKED. WHEN I WANTED TO PARK THE CAR I NOTICED THAT I HAD TO PUT A LOT OF EFFORT TO TURN THE WHEEL AND I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS NORMAL BECAUSE I THOUGHT I TOUCHED THE CURB; HOWEVER, WHEN I LEFT THE SPOT AND I WAS DRIVING THE POWER STEERING WHEEL STOPPED WORKING AND I ALMOST HIT 2 CARS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HENRY HUDSON HIGHWAY. I HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP AND I PARKED THE CAR. I SAW THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR POWER STEERING ON THESE TYPES OF CARS AND I NEED CHEVY TO TEST AND FIX MY CAR.
