STEERING COLUMN LOCKED UP AND HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE FIXED. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2000 CORVETTES. DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WILL TAKE FOR GM TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. I GUESS PEOPLE WILL NEED TO DIE FIRST. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CORVETTE!!!!!!!!!!*AK
STEERING COLUMN LOCKED WITH THE CAR RUNNING. CALLED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY STATED THAT MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND WERE NOT HELPFUL IN GETTING THE CAR FIXED DESPITE THE TREMENDOUS SAFETY HAZARD. *AK
RE: NHTSA ID 04V060000. MY 2000 CORVETTE STEERING COLUMN LOCKED UP AND WOULD NOT RELEASE WHILE IN MY DRIVEWAY. THIS FAILURE IS SUPPOSED TO INITIATE A FUEL SHUTOFF TO PREVENT VEHICLE MOVEMENT. HOWEVER, I WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AND DRIVE IT UP A TOW TRUCK RAMP FOR TRANSPORTATION TO A GM DEALER. FORTUNATELY, THE FRONT WHEELS WERE STRAIGHT WHEN THE COLUMN LOCKED UP. THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THIS SITUATION IS THAT MY VIN IS NOT LISTED IN THE CURRENT RECALL CAMPAIGN FOR THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. I WAS REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS WHICH INVOLVED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COLUMN LOCK SWITCH.*AK
04 V 060 000/ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK: THE STEERING COLUMN DID NOT UNLOCK WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. DEALER NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB
RECALL 04V060000 CONCERNING STEERING COLUMN LOCK LOCKING. MR. DARRELL YOUNG WAS MAKING THIS COMPLAINT FOR THE ABOVE CONSUMER. ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED STEERING COLUMN LOCKED. BY PULLING THE #25 FUSE AND WAITING 10 MINUTES OR MORE WOULD UNLOCK THE STEERING COLUMN. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THE VIN SHOULD BE INCLUDED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS THE RECALL. *NM
UPON STARTING VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT UNLOCK. DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED.*AK
THE CONSUMER COMPLAINED OF A STEERING LOCKING PROBLEM. IN OCTOBER 2003, SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND HAD IT REPAIRED. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THE STEERING LOCKED AFTER THE CONSUMER PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE VEHICLE ON. SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO TURN LEFT/RIGHT. CURRENTLY, IT JUST COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. THE CONSUMER LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THAT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. *AK RECALL # 04V060000. *SC *JB
I HAVE A 2000 CORVETTE AND IT HAS 18,000 MILES ON IT; AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF A STEERING COLUMN LOCK MAKING MY CAR NOT DRIVEABLE. THEY WERE GOING TO CHARGE ME $556.00 TO FIT IT. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER INFORMED ME THAT LAST YEAR HE PICKED UP 21 CORVETTES IN THE SOUTH HOUSTON AREA WHERE I LIVE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN TO SOME OF THEM MORE THAN ONCE AFTER BEING FIXED. ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT 127,000 CORVETTES FROM THE YEAR 1997 TO 2004 HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP AND GENERAL MOTORS SAID THAT BECAUSE MY CORVETTE WAS NOT MADE AT THE PARTICULAR FACTORIES NOTED, THAT MY CORVETTE WOULD NOT BE CORVETTE. AFTER COMPLAINING, THEY SAID THEY WOULD GO 50/50 WITH THE DEALERSHIP SO I HAD TO PAY HALF OF $556.00. I STILL DON'T FEEL I SHOULD HAVE HAD TO PAY ANYTHING. IT IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM IN OTHER FACTORIES. I PLAN TO WRITE GM A LETTER WITH MY RECEIPTS, ETC. TO SEE WHAT ELSE I CAN DO. THANK YOU.
WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE AT ANYTIME, THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKED WITHOUT WARNING. A RECALL( O4V06000) WAS ISSUED, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS OUTSIDE OF THE REMEDY SCOPE. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB

WHILE BACKING OUT STEERING LOCKED. VEHICLE SCREEN INDICATOR READ PULL KEY AND WAIT TEN SECONDS. DEALER STATED ELECTRICAL SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
CONSUMER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS NHTSA CAMPAIGN #04V060000 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEMS (ECL), WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS TURNED TO LOCK, THE ECL PREVENTS TURNING OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE ECL UNLOCKS THE STEERING SYSTEM. DEALERSHIP INDICATED THERE IS NOT RECALL AND DID KNOW WHAT THE CONSUMER WAS TALKING ABOUT. *JB
PARKED VEHICLE, RETURNED, INSERTED KEY, AND STEERING COLUMN LOCKED. COULD NOT TURN STEERING WHEEL. IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER. *AK

AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK UP. THE CONSUMER WOULD TRY NUMEROUS TIMES TO UNLOCK THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *LA THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT HE WAS 54 DAYS LATE TO HAVE THE RECALL WORK DONE. *NM
UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE A SERVICE COLUMN LOCK MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED UPON THE DASHBOARD WHEN THE KEYS WAS TURNED IN THE IGNITION. WHEN THIS OCCURRED STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. RECALL 04V006000 WAS ISSUED FOR THE ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK, BUT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK
WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. THE DRIVER WAS NOT ABLE TO UNLOCKED THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DRIVER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE LOCK MECHANISM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *NM
CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT THE VEHCILE FUEL GAUGE WAS READING A QUARTER OF TANK OF FUEL WHEN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET CORVETTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS NHTSA RECALL, CAMPAIGN 04V060000, REGARDING THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKING: ANTI-THEFT DEVICE. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE REMEDY FOR THIS RECALL WAS NOT SUFFICIENT, AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLES BE REPAIRED AS THE EUROPEAN VEHICLES WERE INSTEAD OF DISABLING THE ANTI-THEFT DEVICE. THE CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY DID OFFER TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNDER NHTSA'S RECALL REMEDY. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED EITHER TURN SIGNALS WILL FAIL TO OPERATE. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY A DEALERSHIP, WHO WAS NOT ABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE TURN SIGNALS BEING INOPERABLE. CONSUMER WAS AWARE OF OTHER CORVETTE OWNER'S THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.
AFTER PAYING FOR A TECHNICIAN TO TEMPORARILY FIX MY LOCKING STEERING COLUMN SO I COULD GET MY CORVETTE HOME, I OBTAINED RECALL INFORMATION OVER THE INTERNET THAT SAID THE PROBLEM I HAD WAS TO BE FIXED WITH A RECALL KIT. AFTER CONTACTING MAUHER CHEVROLET IN ST. PETERSBURG, FL., I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL HAD ALREADY BEEN SATISFIED FOR MY VEHICLE. THE KIT INCLUDES A PLATE AND A RELAY BYPASS THAT DISABLES THE LOCKING MECHANISM IN THE STEERING COLUMN. OBVIOUSLY, THEIR INFO. IS WRONG BECAUSE THE WHEEL LOCKS AND SOMETIMES STAYS LOCKED WHEN IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO. THEY SAY THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME. I AM NOT COMFORTABLE DRIVING MY VEHICLE IN FEAR OF IT MALFUNCTIONING WHILE I'M DRIVING AND THE DEALER WILL NOT PERFORM THE WORK AS THEY SHOULD. MY VIN NUMBER IS [XXX], 2000 CORVETTE. PASSENGER POWER DOOR LOCK DOES NOT UNLOCK. THE LOCK DOES LOCK, BUT IN ORDER TO UNLOCK THE PASSENGER DOOR IT MUST BE DONE MANUALLY OR BY THE KEY HOLE OUTSIDE.*AK BECAUSE OF THE NEW UPDATED LOCK VERSIONS BOTH ACTUATORS ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR LOCK AND PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK MUST BE REPLACED IN ORDER FOR BOTH LOCKS TO FUNCTION TOGETHER. ESTIMATED COST TO REPLACE LOCKS $1200.
STEERING COLUMN LOCK ON MY 2000 CHEVROLET CORVETTE COUPE. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN AUGUST 2003 FROM A LOCAL DEALER. ON TUESDAY 11/25/03 MY CAR'S STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT UNLOCK AFTER I INSERTED THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION. THE CAR STARTED BUT THE STEERING WHEEL COULD NOT BE MOVED IN EITHER DIRECTION. SINCE I COULD NOT STEER THE CAR I HAD IT TOWED ABOUT 5 MILES TO HENDERSON CHEVROLET. THEY SAID I HAD TWO CHOICES. 1) FOR $498 I COULD HAVE THE PROBLEM REPAIRED BUT THE REPLACED PARTS COULD FAIL CAUSING THE PROBLEM TO OCCUR AGAIN, OR 2) FOR $595 THE DEALER WOULD INSTALL A MECHANISM THAT WOULD RENDER THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK INOPERABLE. I OPTED FOR OPTION 2. ON WEDNESDAY 11/26/03, AFTER I PICKED UP MY CAR FROM HENDERSON CHEVROLET, I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT GM AND EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM. GM SAID THEY WOULD CONTACT GM'S SERVICE MANAGER FOR MY AREA AND CALL ME BACK. ON TUESDAY 12/2/03 GM CALLED ME. I TOLD GM I HAD TO PAY $595 TO GET MY CAR "REPAIRED." THE LADY AT GM SAID SHE WOULD CALL GM'S AREA SERVICE MANAGER AGAIN AND THEN CONTACT ME ON FRIDAY 12/5/03. I HAVE MY DOUBTS, BUT EVEN IF GM AGREES TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE $595 REPAIR BILL PLUS THE $32 RENTAL CAR COST, THE POINT IS THAT THERE'S A DEFECT IN THE CAR AND GM SEEMS UNABLE/UNWILLING TO FIX IT PROPERLY. YOUR WEB SITE SHOWS A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM AND I THINK THERE WAS A LIMITED RECALL DONE BY GM. HENDERSON CHEVROLET PUT MY CAR'S VIN IN THEIR COMPUTER BUT THEY SAID MY CAR DID NOT MEET THE RECALL CRITERIA TO BE REPAIRED AT NO CHARGE. IT MAKES NO SENSE TO HAVE TO PAY ANY MONEY, LET ALONE $595, TO DISABLE MY CAR'S THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM. I WOULD LIKE GM/CHEVROLET TO FIX MY CAR, AT NO CHARGE, SO THAT THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WORKS PROPERLY WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT A FUTURE FAILURE THAT MAKES STEERING IMPOSSIBLE. GM AND THEIR DEALERS ARE WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE BEEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THEY MUST BE TOO BUSY PROFITING FROM CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE TO PAY TO DISABLE A SECURITY FEATURE. *NLM

SEAT FRAME BREAKAGE - SEPARATION OF SEAT FROM FRAME. THE SEAT FRAME IN MY 2000 CORVETTE BROKE, CAUSING THE SEAT TO SEPARATE FROM THE FRAME AND SEAT TRACK. THE SEAT DROPPED APPROXIMATELY ONE INCH WHEN IT BROKE. THE INCIDENT COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. IN A SEARCH OF CORVETTEFORUM.COM, I FOUND THAT SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. GM IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS TAKEN NO ACTION TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IF YOU INVESTIGATE THE SEAT DESIGN, YOU WILL FIND THAT THE SEAT FRAME AND ATTACHMENT MECHANISM TO THE SEAT SLIDERS ARE VERY THIN AND DO NOT APPEAR UP TO THEIR DESIGNED TASK. *LA
I OWN A GM CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE 2000. THE STEERING COLUMN IS LOCKED DUE TO A DEFECTIVE STEERING LOCK. GM HAS PUT OUR A SERVICE/RECALL FOR SELECT CORVETTES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 1998 AND 2000. SERVICE BULLETIN 01044 AND SERVICE OPERATIONS DCS 771 I CALLED GM BUT THEY SAY MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED EVEN THOUGH MY CORVETTE IS A 2000 MODEL AND I AM SUFFERING FROM THE SAME PROBLEM AS OTHER OWNERS HAVE ENCOUNTERED. STEERING COLUMN LOCK ACTUATOR FAILED. WAS TOLD NO RECALL, BUT THIS HAPPENS ALOT ON THIS CAR AND THE PART WAS UPDATED FOR THE NEWER CARS SO THIS WOULDN'T HAPPEN ANYMORE. HAD TO HAVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY REPLACED.*AK
AFTER STARTING VEHICLE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WILL NOT DISENGAGE.
I OWN A 2000 CORVETTE WITH 15,000 MILES AND HAVE TWICE WITHIN ONE DAY HAD MY STEERING WHEEL NOT UNLOCK UPON STARTING THE CAR. WENT TO A CORVETTE SHOP FOR HELP WAS TOLD ITS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH CORVETTES AND THAT I SHOULD PULL THE STEERING WHEEL CLOCKWISE WHILE INSERTING THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION, IT WORKED. MY QUESTION IS THERE A PERMANENT FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM CONCERNING CORVETTES. *JB

WHILE WAITING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE WHO STATED THEIR BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED BRAKES. AS A RESULT, THE DECK LID THAT COVERED THE CONVERTIBLE TOP CAME FORWARD AND STRUCK THE CONSUMER'S WIFE WHO WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND BROKE HER NECK. *AK *JB
CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKING UP. ALSO, THERE IS A RECALL WHERE THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN EVEN THOUGH HIS VEHICLE IS DOING THE SAMETHING.*AK CONSUMER WAS BACKING OUT OF GARAGE AND HAD MOVED ABOUT 6-8 FT WHEN HE TRIED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND COULD NOT. COSNUMER PULLED CAR BACK INTO GARAGE AND SHUT OFF CAR. RESTARTED CAR ABOUT 10 TIMES TO TRY TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL UNLOCKED, BUT IT WOULD NOT UNLOCK. SINCE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY CSC 1044A, CUSTOMER HAD TSB REPAIR PERFORMED ON VEHICLE, BUT HAD TO PAY FOR IT HIMSELF.
STEERING WHEEL COLUMN LOCKED WHEN STARTING CAR. DIC MESSAGE SAID TO REMOVE KEY FOR 10 SECONDS THEN TRY AGAIN. SAMETHING HAPPENED WHEN KEY REINSERTED. THE CAR STARTED AND MOVED FORWARD OR BACKWARDS, BUT THE STEERING WHEEL COULD NOT BE MOVED.*AK

I OWN A 2000 CHEVY CORVETTE MN6. AT 26000 MILES I GOT A COLUMN LOCK ERROR WHERE THE COLUMN LOCK DOES NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED TO START. I'VE SEEN MANY SIMILIAR COMPLAINTS ON THE CORVETTE FORUM AND AM ADDING MY NAME TO THE LIST OF CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO CHEVY MY CAR IS NOT IN THE VIN GROUP THAT WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A FREE FIX IF I HAD THE PROBLEM PRIOR TO 1-7-03. THIS OBVIOUSLY SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN.
WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL WITHOUT ANY WARNING LOCKED UP. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK THE RADIO QUIT, DIRECTIONAL SWITCH, POWER DOORS/SWITCH, AND THE DOOR UNLATCHED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND WHILE PARKED. *SCC *JB

THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE. *AK THIS HAD ONLY OCCURRED AT START UP. THE CONSUMER WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THIS OCCURRING WHILE IN MOTION. *SCC *JB
FUEL GAUGE INACCURACY. I HAVE TO DEPEND ON THE MILES LEFT UNTIL TANK HAS AN EMPTY GAUGE. WHEN ALL FUEL GAUGES GET TO ABOUT 1/4 TANK (ON THE CONSOLE AND THE HOOD), IT WILL DROP TO EMPTY SETTING OFF LOW FUEL ALARMS. GAUGE HAS BEEN REPAIRED 3 TIMES AND CONTINUES TO HAVE THE PROBLEM. *LA

STEERING COLUMN LOCKED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. I SPOKE W/4 DIFFERENT SALES PERSONS, CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS, AND MECHANICS AT DEALERSHIP AND NO ONE KNEW WHY, AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME WAS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. 1 LITTLE PROBLEM, THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING SPACE, AND IT TOOK TWO TOW TRUCKS AND 3 HOURS OF MY TIME TO GET THE VEHICLE ON A FLAT BED, THAT IS AFTER KNOCKING ON ALL THE NEIGHBOR'S DOORS TO FINDOUT WHO OWNS WHICH CAR, AND HAVING MOVE THEIR CARS, SO THE TOW GUYS CAN ACCESS THE VEHICLE BY PLACED THE FRONT OF IT ON A FREE WHEEL AND READ OF IT ON A FREE WHEEL, TURNING THE VEHICLE 180 DEGREES, AND THEN PLACING IT ON A FLAT BED. *AK REF.
