TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN SHE APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE AND WHEN IT WOULD ILLUMINATE, IT WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. IN ADDITION, SHE NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS ALSO ILLUMINATED. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE WOULD EXHIBIT AN ABNORMAL KNOCKING FROM THE ENGINE FOLLOWED BY A VIOLENT JERKING. THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO SEIZED INTERMITTENTLY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE OXYGEN BANKS ONE AND TWO, CORE PACK, SPARK PLUGS AND THE PRONGS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 155,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
2006 CHEVY MALIBU LT ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING FAILURE: ON 1/31/2010, MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON OUR WAY TO CHURCH; WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 20 (I20) THE 2006 CHEVY MALIBU ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING WENT OUT. IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE LOW TRAFFIC VOLUME AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT TO BE REPORTED. I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO CHURCH BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK TO MY HOME. I HAD A FAMILY MEMBER PICK UP MY WIFE THAT IS PREGNANT ALONG WITH MY TWO DAUGHTERS, AND FOLLOW ME BACK TO THE HOUSE. BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP WAS CLOSED I SEARCHED ONLINE TO FIND OUT IF THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY MALIBU. WITHIN MY RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND OUT THIS PROBLEM IS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG MANY OWNERS WHO VEHICLE FALLS BETWEEN THE YEAR OF 2004 AND 2006. ALTHOUGH MY CAR HAS OVER 100,000 MILES I HAVE FOUND THIS PROBLEM HAS ACCRUED AS EARLY AS 52,000 MILES. WHEN STARTING MY CAR IT IS VERY HARD TO TURN THE WHEEL UNTIL I GAIN A LITTLE SPEED. *TR
2006 CHEVY MALIBU HAS REPEAT STEERING PROBLEMS. IN PAST 6 MONTHS STEERING GEAR AND I-SHAFT HAVE BEEN REPLACED DURING TWO SEPARATE VISITS TO DEALER. THERE IS STILL EXCESS NOISE DURING ACCELERATION AND DURING TURNS. THE NOISE IS CONTINUOUS. *TR
I HAVE A 06 MALIBU MAXX AND THE POWER STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT. WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR, IT WAS DRIVING FINE AND THE ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOSE POWER STEERING AND THE WORDS "POWER STEERING" IS DISPLAYED. I HAVE TO TURN OF THE CAR AND TURN IT BACK ON SO IT CAN RESET. IT HAS BEEN DOING IT MORE AND MORE LATELY, AND A FEW TIMES I ALMOST HAVE HIT SOMEONE. I CALLED CHEVY TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM AND THEY SAID NO. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2004 AND 2005 CHEVYS MALIBU WITH ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING, BUT NOTHING ON THE 2006. CHEVY ALSO TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND LET THEM INSPECT. WHICH I DID AND THEY CAN FIND NO PROBLEM. *CN
I HAVE A 2006 MALIBU LT THAT LOST THE POWER STEERING ON A STREET, ON ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR I HAD SOME BYSTANDERS HELP ME PUSH THE CAR TO A PARKING LOT. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND SEEN THAT THERE ARE MANY MALIBU'S WITH THIS PROBLEM SOME WITH ACCIDENTS. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU MAXX THAT HAS BEEN KNOCKING NEAR THE FRONT END, INDICATING POSSIBLE CV JOINT ISSUES OR SOME OTHER SUSPENSION OR STEERING PROBLEMS. I HAVE HAD THE TIE RODS REPLACED ONCE BUT THE SYMPTOMS LATER RETURNED. MOST RECENTLY, THE POWER STEERING FAILED, LOCKING DURING A RIGHT TURN AND CAUSING ME TO DRIVE OUT OF MY LANE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS IN JANUARY 2010 AND THANKFULLY HAS NOT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. HAD MY WIFE BEEN DRIVING WITH HER BAD BACK, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE STRENGTH TO CONTROL THE CAR AND AVOID A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC STEERING SYSTEM AND THE COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF FORUMS DISCUSSING THIS EXACT PROBLEM IN THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE OVER ABOUT 4 MODEL YEARS BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THERE IS AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING IN THIS MODEL VEHICLE AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED AND RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU LS . POWER STEERING KEEPS COMING ON. THE WHEEL TURNS SLIGHTLY IN IDLE. WELL NOW POWER STEERING IS LOST WHILE DERIVING MAKING IT HARD TO MOVE AT HIGH SPEEDS. DANGEROUS. AFTER CAR IS TURNED OFF THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO GO AWAY UNTIL MINUTES LATER YOU HEAR CHIMES AND IT LOCKS AGAIN. *TR
I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE 1/23/2010. WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON ALL THE TIME, AND WHEN YOU PRESS THE BRAKES TO STOP , THE BRAKE LIGHTS GO OFF. ON LOTS OF OCCASIONS, VEHICLES BEHIND YOU TEND TO ALMOST SLAM YOU IN THE REAR END BECAUSE YOUR BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OFF WHEN YOU ARE STOPPED AND THEY THINK YOU HAVE LET OFF THE BRAKES TO PROCEED. THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN TIMES WHEN THERE ARE NO TAIL LIGHTS AT ALL. ALSO, THERE IS AN ISSUE OF SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE. I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE COMPUTER, BUT NO RECALL THAT I CAN FIND. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME KIND OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEM SOMEWHERE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AT THE MANUFACTURERS EXPENSE. *TR
MY POWER STEERING SUDDENLY WENT OUT SUDDENLY ON MY 2006 MALIBU MAXX LT WHILE ENTERING THE FREEWAY. IT HAS HAPPENED 3 OTHER TIMES. IT RESETS WHEN I TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON, BUT I FEEL THAT IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL AUTO SHOPS AND NONE OF THEM CAN FIGURE IT OUT, EXCEPT TO TELL ME THAT IT IS VERY COMMON. *TR
2006 CHEVY MALIBU, POWER STEERING FAILS IN MOTION OR UPON STARTUP. REPAIRS REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF BOTH THE PS SENSOR MODULE AND THE PS COLUMN. COSTS ANY WHERE BETWEEN $1500-$2000 TO REPAIR. STEERING BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT, COULD BE HARD TO AVOID ACCIDENTS OR SAFELY STEER CLEAR OF ROAD DEBRIS. *TR
POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL AND ACCELERATING. USUALLY, THIS HAPPENS AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, BEFORE THE ENGINE HAS HAD A CHANCE TO WARM UP. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST SIX TIMES IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU MAXX. THE POWER STEERING IS LIGHTING UP ON THE STEREO. THERE IS A RECALL FOR OTHER CHEVY CARS THAT HAVE THE SAME POWER STEERING AS OUR CAR, YET OUR CAR ISN'T PART OF THE RECALL. WHY? *TR
MY 06 MALIBU MAXX HAS A STEERING PROBLEM. THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT TURN EASILY AT LOW SPEEDS. IT MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN I TURN. I HAVE READ AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH MY ELECTRONIC STEERING AND IT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR MANY OF THESE VEHICLES. I AM WORRIED THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AT A HIGHER SPEED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STARTED THE IGNITION AND NOTICED WHEN TURING THE STEERING WHEEL INTO THE LEFT DIRECTION A LOUD NOISE WOULD EMIT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE FRONT SWING ARM SUSPENSION WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT TECHNICIAN WHO STATED THE DEFECT WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHEN MAKING RIGHT OR LEFT HAND TURNS. OR WHEN THE TEMP IN THE VEHICLE IS HOT THE STEERING WON'T STAY ON AT ALL. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A SPECIAL WARRENY ENANCEMENT ISSUED BUT NO RECALL. THIS MEANS THAT A MILAGE LIMIT OF 100,000 MILES IS IN PLACE. SO THIS WILL COST ME $1200 TO FIX FOR SOMETHING THAT THEY KNOW IS WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. I GUESS SOMEONE HAS TO BE KILLED OR INJURED BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE DRIVER STATED THAT HIS POWER STEERING FAILED WHENEVER HE STARTED THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER ALSO STATED THAT HIS STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED ON. WHEN HE SHIFTED INTO DRIVE GEAR AND ACCELERATES, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SHAKING EXCESSIVELY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,700 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER MADE THREE ATTEMPTS TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THEY REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN TWICE AND THEN THE STEERING SHAFT HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,688 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 26,000.
SEVERAL YEARS AGO VEHICLE STARTED TO EXHIBIT IGNITION MISSES WHEN MAKING SLOW SPEED TURNS 10-20MPH. CONDITION WOULD CORRECT ITSELF WHEN COMING OUT OF TURNS OR ENTRANCE RAMPS MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. IN 2013 AND 2014 OCCURRENCE BECAME MORE FREQUENT (2-3 TIMES WEEKLY). CHEVROLET DEALER ADVISED ME TWO MONTHS AGO THAT IT APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE IGNITION SWITCH AND ADVISED ME TO REMOVE UNNECESSARY WEIGHT FROM IGNITION KEY CHAIN. I IMMEDIATELY DID THIS AND PROBLEM HAS NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. HOWEVER, DEALER ADVISED THAT I COULD ADD MY NAME TO WAIT LIST FOR A NEW IGNITION SWITCH, BUT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR SINCE MY 2006 IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. SINCE MANY OTHER GM MODELS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME LATENT DEFECT I FEEL MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE RECALL LIST FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE VEHICLE WOULD PULL TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT EXCESSIVELY WHICH DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. THE SPEED ALSO FLUCTUATED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. GENERAL MOTORS TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD SEND HIM A $1000 VOUCHER TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN HE ASKED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 57,852.
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU, WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE STEERING LOCKED UP. I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 35 MPH I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND STOP. I WAS TOLD TO CUT THE CAR OFF FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. AFTER THE 20 MINUTES I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH NO PROBLEMS THAT DAY, THEIR HAVE BEEN TWO INCIDENTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED DURING EACH FAILURE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE ELECTRONIC POWER ASSIST MODULE, WHICH COULD BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,000.

THE POWER STEERING ASSIST IN MY 2006 CHEVY MALIBU MAXX HAS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING TWICE. I HAD MY MECHANIC LOOK INTO IT AND IT WAS A CONFIRMED PROBLEM FOR THE 2005 MODELS BUT NOT THE 2006. I FEEL THIS IS A HUGE LIABILITY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. IF THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ITS AN ISSUE, IT NEEDS TO GET FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. I'VE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FIX IT. *TR

MY STEERING SYSTEM IS FAILING AND MY RACK AND PINION NEEDS REPLACING AT 65,000 MILES. MY MECHANIC SAYS IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN THE LONG TERM WITH THE CLUNKING SOUNDS I HEAR AND THE RACK COULD FAIL AND CAUSE ME TO CRASH. GM CHEVY MALIBU V6 ENGINE. *TR
STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING - HAPPENS AT RANDOM - AT ALL DIFFERENT TIMES. DEALER ACTED LIKE IT WAS NO BIG DEAL AND OF COURSE THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR IT WHEN I HAVE NOW FOUND OUT THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. IT IS DANGEROUS, AND IT COULD CAUSE FATALITY. PROBLEM SEEMS TO GO AWAY FOR A WHILE AFTER I CHANGE OUT THE SPARK PLUGS. BUT I AM AT 160,000 MILES AND ON MY 8TH SET OF SPARK PLUGS. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, SPARK PLUGS SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 20,000 MILES. GM SHOULD TAKE THIS COMPLAINT SERIOUSLY BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. SOMETHING IS WRONG, OTHERWISE WHY WOULD THERE BE SO MANY PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM WORKING AT PAYING OFF THIS CAR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE SO THAT I CAN GET INTO A SAFER VEHICLE. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU, I PURCHASE THIS CAR USED LAST FEBRUARY 2009 AND ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT BEGIN TO COME ON. A COUPLE OF TIMES I NEEDED TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST ABOUT $600 FOR THEM TO REPLACE THE STEERING WHEEL, OR FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT CAUSE ANY PROBLEM AT THAT TIME. TODAY 03-02-2010 I READ AN ARTICLE CONCERNING RECALLS ON GM CARS 2005-2010 COBALT, BUT DUE TO THE INFORMATION THAT IS PROVIDED, THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I AM HAVING WITH MY 2006 CHEVY MALIBU. MY CONCERN IS HOW DO I GO ABOUT HAVING THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM RECTIFIED AS WELL FOR THIS CAR. *TR
DRIVING 30 MPH DOWN A COUNTRY ROAD. DROVE OVER BLACK ICE STARTED TO FISHTAIL. LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE GOING INTO THREE 360'S. IN THE FOURTH 360 I HIT A TREE HEAD ON CAUSING TOTAL DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR. SLID ALONG A BARBEDWIRE FENCE FOR THE BACK END TO HIT THE TREE AGAIN AND WRAPPING THE CAR AROUND THE TREE. THE TREE THEN FELL ON TOP OF THE CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL WITHIN MINUTES. THE FAILURE OCCURRED 8 TIMES. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, THE FAILURE SEEMED TO CORRECT ITSELF. HE HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO-DATE. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 68,500.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU. THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 15 AND 55 MPH ON TWO OCCASIONS. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON BEFORE THE STEERING SYSTEM RESET ITSELF AND BEGAN DRIVING NORMALLY. THE INPUT TORQUE SENSOR WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK. . THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51000. *CN UPDATED 02/17/10.*JB
POWER STEERING WENT OUT ABRUPTLY IN 2006 CHEVY MALIBU MAXX MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ON CROWDED ROADWAY. CONDITION DID NOT IMPROVE UNTIL CAR WAS BROUGHT TO A COMPLETE HALT, TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THIS CONDITION HAS OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY AND WAS ADDRESSED BY MY CHEVROLET DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT NO COST. APPARENTLY THE "FIX" DIDN'T LAST. WHEN I REPORTED THIS RECURRENCE TO THE SAME SERVICE MANAGER HE QUOTED ME A SUBSTANTIAL ESTIMATE COST FOR REPAIRING THE CONDITION. THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE WARNING PANEL AND HE ATTEMPTED TO SHUT OFF AND RESTART THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES, UNTIL THE POSER STEERING RESET ITSELF. HE CONFIRMED HE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE SEVERAL TIMES OVER A COURSE OF ONE MONTH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, AT HIS EXPENSE. NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000 AND THE CURRENT WAS 38,000.

THIS CAR LOSES POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING. 1ST TIME I WAS MERGING INTO HIGH SPEED PARKWAY TRAFFIC AND WAS FRIGHTENED WHEN DIRECTING THE CAR WAS ALMOST TOO DIFFICULT FOR ME. MY PETITE DAUGHTER WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS IF SHE HAD BEEN DRIVING. TURNING CORNERS IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AS THE TURNING RADIUS IS GREATLY REDUCED. MY WIDE ARCHED TURNS BRING ME DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. I HAVE CHRONIC MUSCLE PAIN FROM THE MUSCLE USE IT TAKES TO TURN THE WHEELS OF MY CAR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER'S SERVICE MANAGER THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT WILL CHARGE APPROXIMATELY $900.00 TO REMEDY IT. THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM IS ELECTRONIC NOT HYDRAULIC AND I FULLY EXPECT IT IS THE SAME SYSTEM PRESENTLY RECALLED ON THE CHEVY COBALT. THE PROBLEM DESCRIPTIONS OF THE COBALT AND MALIBU ARE IDENTICAL. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY IN MY 2006 MALIBU LT, WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, THE STEERING GOT REALLY TIGHT AND I WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY, AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE STEERING WENT BACK TO NORMAL, AND A FEW SECONDS LATER IT LOCKED UP AGAIN. A POWER STEERING WARNING CAME UP ON THE DASH. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND SAID THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR HAD GONE BAD. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD, THAT DID NOT RESULT FROM NEGLECT ON MY PART AS THE OWNER. HAD I NOT BEEN AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER, OR IF THE ROADS WERE WET OR SLIPPERY, THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION COULD HAVE HAD BAD OUTCOME. BOUGHT A NEW CHEVY MALIBU IN JULY OF 2006--WE HAVE FOUGHT TIRES ON IT SINCE DAY 1 AND NO ONE WOULD STAND BEHIND THEM--THE RIMS WON'T SEAL AROUND THE TIRES. WE HAVE REPLACED THE TIRES AND NO LUCK. LOSS OF POWER STEERING! DRIVING LESS THAN 1 MILE I LOSS ALL POWER STEERING! I MADE A LEFT HAND TURN DOWN A CUL-DE-SAC STREET AND WHEN TURNING AROUND AT THE END OF THE ROAD I LOST MY POWER STEERING! ON 11/15/2011 THE USA TODAY REPORTED THAT FEDERAL SAFETY REGULATORS WERE INVESTIGATING PROBLEMS WITH THE AUTOMATIC SHIFT LEVERS ON SEVERAL GENERAL MOTORS CARS. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION SAYS ON ITS WEBSITE THAT IT'S LOOKING INTO THE SAME PROBLEM ON OTHER GM CARS LIKE THE 2004-2008 CHEVROLET MALIBU. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU WHICH HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND CAN BE VERIFIED THROUGH CARFAX OR MAINTENANCE RECORDS. I HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AT GORDON CHEVROLET IN TAMPA, FLORIDA. THE COST OF THE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WAS $3,086.01. THE SYMPTOMS OF THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WERE THE EXACT SAME THING AS REPORTED IN THE USA TODAY ARTICLE. THE VEHICLE WASN'T FINDING THE RIGHT GEAR. THE SHIFT LEVER WOULD FEEL LIKE IT WAS IN-BETWEEN GEARS AND IT WOULDN'T CATCH IN A CERTAIN GEAR. THE RPM'S WOULD SURGE UP WHILE IT STILL WOULDN'T CATCH INTO GEAR. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN IT WAS PLACED IN REVERSE IT WOULD TRAVEL FORWARD AS SOON AS YOU TOOK YOUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, ALMOST LIKE ON A HILL BUT ON COMPLETELY FLAT GROUND. ON THE HIGHWAY I COULD BE DRIVING AT A CONSISTENT SPEED AND THE RPM'S WOULD BE JUMPING UP AND DOWN WHICH IT NEVER DID IN A PROPER GEAR.
