NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I have a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban that had an issue with the brakes not wanting to stop the vehicle at slow speeds. Several times when we pulled into our garage or a parking space the vehicle would want to glide instead of stopping. I've had several parts replaced and am now hoping the problem is fixed. just picked the car up today from repair shop.
Brakes failed and became hard to press down on it and would not stop vehicle.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the rear liftgate failed to close. The fire department removed the hydraulic shock to close the rear liftgate. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.
In 2022, the transmission experienced a complete failure and required replacement. Unfortunately, the vehicle is now encountering the same issues once more. From various forums, it appears that these issues are prevalent with the 2015 Suburban, including the need for AC condenser replacements. Having had to address both problems, it's clear these repairs are quite expensive for a family vehicle, especially considering regular maintenance.
My wife called me and said she could smell gasoline in our 2015 suburban. I went to the store she was located at and it smelled like raw gasoline. I called a tow truck company and to haul our suburban to the shop. The fuel line has been rubbing against the vehicle frame and rubbed a hole in it. This is very dangerous as the fuel take and line is located right underneath my kids seats.
The transmission on my vehicle had a catastrophic failure according to the dealership with only 80k miles. This car is driven 10k-15k miles a year. This is completely unacceptable. These need to be recalled as this is happening to more & more of these model vehicles.
El problema de esa camioneta esque lla se le a cambiado 3 veces los catalizadores uno alos 30 mil millas y oto alos 80 mil millas y el otro alos 165 mil millas y haora tiene 168 mil millas esta com el código p0430
The power steering locks up at random times while I am driving my vehicle. It seems to be temporary loss of power steering because it eventually starts working again. It feels almost impossible to turn the car when this happens. I searched online and found there had been a recall on the EPS (Electric Power Steering) for this exact issue. I called the local dealership, they told me after searching my vin that the recall had already taken place in 2019. The repair or recall that was done did not fix the problem.
Hard breaking at slow speeds. Risk of accident to pedestrian and to vehicle and to structure. This problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer. This problem has not been inspected by manufacturer or police or insurance No warning lights prior to problem..
Vehicle loses power steering when turning at slow speeds which was part of a recall from 2018. Reflashing the module didn't fix the issue and has been doing it again for a year now except that now it occasionally loses power as well and has twice lost power while I was turning and oncoming traffic coming at me. GM is saying it is not the same issue as the prior recall, but I disagree and that the work done prior didn't fix the safety hazard. An 8 year old vehicle shouldn't be losing power while driving to where the battery cables have to all be replaced. That should have been the work GM did back when they first put out the recall for the loss of power steering.
Leaking fuel line from pump to engine. Rubbed on frame and wore a hole in it.
We smelled gas inside and outside of the car. Upon inspection, I found gas leaking from the fuel line under the vehicle that comes from the fuel tank. This created a dangerous situation as noxious fumes were introduced to the cabin of the vehicle, and the leaking gas created a fire hazard. We took the vehicle to the dealer, and they confirmed that the frame rubbing on the fuel line created a dangerous leak. They confirmed this is a common problem for this model and a redesign of the replacement fuel line would prevent the problem in the future, but no recall has been issued. We paid $1180.20 to have the fuel line replaced. No inspections other than the dealer and myself have been performed. No warning lights or messages indicated the problem.
Trailer Brake System Continuous Alerts.
So my 2015 when I’m slow drive 5mph give it take the steering wheel locks up parking assist lights come on my ac turns off and my screen shuts down
Clanking, stalling , wouldn’t go into gear. Had to have the truck flatbed to AAMCO. Was told transmission. Call Chevy during issue’s and told vehicle was not part of recall. Transmission had to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH on the highway, there was an abnormal oil odor and an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle prior to the vehicle losing motive power. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle stalled in traffic and the Police arrived to direct the traffic while waiting for the tow truck to arrive and tow the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.
Brakes became very hard to apply and the car could not stop quickly. Needed to replace the vacuum booster pump.
Service Trailer Brake System
The drivers seat back is extremely lose. Moves forward and back with every brake and acceleration. The seat base also moves slightly, rocking left to right in turns. The suspension completely failed and had to be replaced. An unknown oily substance has been coating the inside of the windshield since the purchase of vehicle in 2015. Requires constant deep cleaning in order to see through windshield.
My vehicle started to alert me over and over again about my trailer brake system. It just keeps popping up over and over again and beeps every single time. A lot of GMC and Chevy are having this issue. It could cause hazards when I pull a trailer and the trailer brakes don’t work properly.
While driving, I noticed a significant smell of gas coming from my 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. When I stopped the vehicle, it was even more noticeable. I pulled over and got out of the car only to notice gas pouring (not dripping, more gushing) from under the vehicle between the driver's side door and driver's side passenger door. I was concerned as I had my young child with me and had no way of having someone pick us up. I drove it directly to the mechanic in which they confirmed a leak coming from above the tank and that they would not be able to repair the leak until they dropped the tank. Once dropping the tank, they found a hole in the fuel supply line above the tank due to a poor design and friction from the poor design. There is a service bulletin, 17-NA-304, but it does not protect owners from the cost of the repair. The repair cost was $425.38 despite it being a known issue with GM. This design is incredibly dangerous. Not only is the raw fuel inhalation through the vents a health hazard, it could cause a catastrophic fire as well. I have four children, the reason why we needed to drive a Suburban. The devastation of the risk of this flaw is incredible. This needs to be considered a recall and the cost should be covered by the company, not the owner. I emailed GM's customer service and they stated that nothing could be done because the vehicle was out of warranty.
The trailer breaking system keeps coming on constantly. It comes on randomly while sitting or driving then will keep doing it over and over. It's very distracting and I don't want it to hurt us if it fails etc.
The vehicle component of concern is the braking system. The brake pedal has to be pressed at an unusual rate of pressure to engage the brake system. More concerning is, on several occasions the brakes seem to fail, initiating the ABS system while in fast food lines. This has also occurred while backing up causing the pedal to be jammed to the floor to stop the vehicle. The excessive need for pressure while braking was supposed to be fixed in 2021 by a "simple" recall that simply updated the computer. I had this recall performed, but still have the same braking issues in my 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. I feel that this is a very serious concern and should be addressed. The difference is truly night and day between my wife's vehicle and mine. The braking issue comes with no warnings or alarms. I have had my brakes checked on several occasions to confirm normal brake wear and longevity.
Vehicle A/C condenser has a leak parts are on backorder because of the number of failures
Headlight assembly leaks and retains significant amounts of water resembling a half filled fish tank. This causes the bulbs to burn out or corrode the light power supply leaving you with no headlights! This is a very common problem across many GM platforms. I am surprised the Government regulators have allowed a safety problem this wide spread and known to continue unaddressed.
When turning at speeds below 20 mph, motor stops lights go out, lights and gauges will come back on and car can be started. This has happened two or three times over the last three months but now only five days apart.
Driving at a slow speed and lost power steering due to faulty power steering module Went into oncoming traffic and drove off road to avoid collision. Recalled 3 years ago for software update but problem happened again and gm would not cover repair
Fuel line running from fuel pump to engine rubs on the frame causing a leak in the fuel line.
Brake pedal got hard and truck didn’t stop until brake pedal got softer, this been happened few occasions.
After about 10 min idling vehicle, noticed “service brake assist” message. When it was time to pull out onto road, the vehicle did not brake as expected. I had to push much harder on brake pedal, and heard clicking noise. I was in front of the middle school and because the vehicle was going very slow I was able to stop, but could have had an accident if the speed was higher or if I wasn’t strong enough to push pedal harder. This happened today 2/25/2022 and the outside temp is 3F. This seems just like the recall n192268490 on the consumer reports website, but the dealer says this vehicle is not affected even though it is the same year and model name.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel became stiff, and the vehicle lost automotive power. The check engine, seat belt, stabili-trak, and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was occasionally towed and taken to the same local dealer on several occasions, where it was diagnosed; however, the failure was not yet determined. The transmission, fuel pump, battery, alternator, and unknown wiring were replaced at the consumer's expense; however, the failure persisted. In addition, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V586000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
When trying to brake while parking in a parking spot at low speeds, or so and go traffic my wife and I experience an extremely hard brake pedal that creeps to a stop, almost hitting others and structures.
Blind spot detectors failed and shorted out entire vehicle. Caused battery drain and vehicle completely dead had to be flat bedded to dealer Cost of repair 1800$
My wife drives a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ. The brake pedal would vibrate when pressed going at slow speed or when reversing for weeks leading up to the break failure; however, no service message would appear on the dashboard instrument panel. On December 17, 2021 my wife was driving when someone in another vehicle crossed the highway right in front of her, when she pressed the brakes, they were very hard to press and the 2015 Suburban was not able to stop. Fortunately, she barely missed colliding with the other vehicle. She was able to coast to a slow speed and pull over into the grass and glide to a stop because the brakes would not work. This was the first time that a "Service Brake Assist" message appeared on the dashboard instrument panel. We had the Suburban towed to the nearest Chevrolet dealership. In researching the problem, there has been a recall issued for this type of failure of the brakes for 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburbans; however, there is no recall for our Suburban according to the VIN #. Failure of the braking system on a vehicle is very dangerous and can result in injury or death. I strongly believe our vehicle, and other vehicles like ours, should be added to the recall list as soon as possible before someone gets seriously injured or dies due to not being able to stop and crashing into another vehicle, person, or object. The Chevrolet dealership says that since our vehicle is not on the recall list, we are responsible for the charges to fix it; however, I believe that the manufacturer (Chevrolet) should pay for the expenses since this seems to be a defect of the parts that are failing, especially since the Suburban is only 6 years old and has less than 100,000 miles.
The Service Trailer Brake System keeps popping up. Keeps dinging off and on whether you push the dismiss button or not. When this is on I question if the electrical brakes will work when I tow our camper. It is very distracting while driving. Safety Concern for sure!
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving under 5 MPH and pulling into a parking spot, the steering wheel started to feel tight. The contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated and was flickering on and off before the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that the failure lasted for approximately 5 seconds and then returned to normal operation. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V586000 (Steering) and linked it to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed to wait for the recall notification to arrive in the mail. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
The break vacuum pump is going out and making vehicle hard to stop and fuel pump or vacuum is leaking gas and smell inside vehicle
The service trailer brake system error keeps coming up on my vehicle.
While vehicle is on if parked or driving the service trailer brake warning will come on and go off repeatedly. Happens randomly.
Transmission issue at 160,000 miles and the whole system needs to be replaced. which was told most vehicles from 2014 - 2016 have these issues. such as the suburban, yukon, tahoe, serria, told could cause fire.
While putting car in reverse brake pedal goes stiff and brakes do not function. I would have to take car out of gear to be able to control it. Also happened on highway going forward once but at low speed. Looked online and saw recalls listed but my vin is not in recall. Dealer says they dont know whats wrong and they have another car there with same problem and they cant figure it out and engineers from Chevrolet do not know why it happens. They have told me it could take days of testing at my expense to figure out the problem and my cost to repair their potentially deadly manufacturing defect.
Vehicle is very hard to stop there was a recall which was performed in 2019 and it’s coming back and doing the same thing it takes a lot of brake pedal pressure to stop the Vehicle. It started some time ago but now it’s getting very hard to stop the car
Due to a faulty design, the fuel feed line (GM part # 84200271) has been worn through from vibration resulting in a pin hole in the line at the point where the fuel line is seated in the molded-in clip retainer of the fuel tank. This wear has resulted in raw fuel pouring over the top of the fuel tank and producing a significant risk to life and health from fire and inhalation. The fumes from the raw fuel could be smelled through the A/C vents while driving highway speed (inhalation hazard). Once the vehicle is turned off the fuel leak subsides. However, while idling in park the fuel leak would puddle under the vehicle resulting in a significant and potentially catastrophic fire hazard. While researching the symptoms of my issue, I discovered many complaints of the exact symptoms and findings that I have discovered. I spoke over the phone with a service department employee of a local GM dealership who denied having addressed this issue on other vehicles similar to mine (2015 Suburban LT). I will bring the worn-through fuel feed line to this same dealership to inquire about possible mitigation for this known issue (See service bulletin 17-NA-304). The symptoms that I first noticed were a hard start and the smell of raw fuel in and around the vehicle. No check engine light or other warning messages were displayed to alert me of this failure.
On August 21, 2021 My Daughter [XXX], husband [XXX] and myself was in a car accident on the 495 beltway in PG County, Maryland. We where hit from the rear back side (fishtail) on the passenger of vehicle which caused the vehicle to spin across all 4 lanes and hit the guardrail.. The impact caused all of us to be locked inside the vehicle in which I had to physically kick my door open from the inside because I was unable to get out. I was able to get out and go to my husband side (drivers side) because he was bleeding from his head, I had to forcefully pull and pull to open his door because it was also jammed and wouldn’t open. Same for my daughters side(passenger rear).. The entire front of the truck was pushed back, doors, front and back of the vehicle was badly damaged and NOT ONE AIRBAG DEPLOYED.. NOT ONE. My husband was the driver and sustained head injuries with head bleeding and was transported via ambulance to NOVA Fairfax County Hospital. My daughter was transported via ambulance to Washington Hospital Trauma Center. I went to Washington Hospital Center ER but was unable to stay and went to Kaiser Permanente Urgent Care once my daughter was discharged from the Trauma Side of the hospital that night. Geico has determined that the truck is a totally lost and that the damages thus far have exceeded $30,000 but waiting on final approvals of Numbers. We do have a police report. To answer the question above. The airbags failed to deploy in the accident. We could have died. My husband had to get staples in his head and disk are messed up in his back. There where no warnings on the dash board before the crash. The vehicle has been inspected by the insurance company and the police on the scene. Over 600 miles from home. Started vehicle and " Service power steering- drive with care" message shows. No power steering. Recall performed previously. Attempted to drive. Within 15 miles power steering came back while traveling 55 mph. The next morning in the rain a repeat. This is a very heavy vehicle with 6 passengers. Hard enough to maneuver with power steering on bag roads. GM knows there is a problem but like most big companies, they pay off people to avoid fixing issues. Search online and see.
Hello, While driving my Chevy suburban last week as I was pumping gas with my two year old son in the back seat. I saw smoke leaking and rolling out from the bottom of my vehicle. I had shift the vehicle off and inspected thoroughly. I couldn’t see and understand where this was coming from. It wasn’t the engine block and no check engine lights had come on. So I let the vehicle cool and started her up. No issue until I was a mile or two from my family summer rental and all of a sudden the vehicle felt as though it slipped out of gear. I was left without any power and realized I was smoking again. I pulled or what I would call drifted to the break down lane and pulled my little man out of the vehicle. This happened on Saturday and after almost a week in the shop, the dealership sprung me a nice $5200 price for a transmission. I am now looking and seeing two different recalls for this vehicle. Ironically the these two issues look exactly like the two recalls they have for the power train. We had just completed a 1,000 mile trip for a family emergency. When we arrived at our destination, we found that somewhere during the last 500 miles of the trip, we had developed a fuel leak. After removing the fuel tank, my husband discovered a break in the fuel feed hose, as well as several worn spots in the line and on the top of the fuel tank. We were traveling in 100 degree weather, and I am just thankful at this point that the Suburban did not catch on fire!
This car was covered by NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V645000. The repair was completed by the Chevrolet Dealer. The problem has returned and is even more prevalent than before the recall. Bottom line, this repair did NOT fix the issue and this has become a serious safety issue. This is a dangerous situation and someone is going to get injured if Chevrolet does NOT properly fix this issue.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while attempting to secure the driver’s side seat belt, the seat belt pre-tensioner failed and fractured at the base and failed to securely latch. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
BRAKES FAILED IN A DRIVE THROUGH LINE. SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL. SUBURBAN HAD THE CORRECTED SOFTWARE UPDATE AND YET IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME IT LEAD TO A CRASH REAR ENDING A VEHICLE. NOT ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. GM HAS KNOW ABOUT THIS AND THE FIX DIDNT WORK. THIS IS NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART.
