NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
There is an issue with the transmission when i accelerate at a slow pace. The car shakes and vibrates. Theres a possibility of an issue with the transfer case 4x4. When i turn the steering wheel and drive, it feels like it locks. It feels like 4x4 is on and theres a odd sound as well. I took my car to Hamilton Chevrolet and paid for inspection. They told me that there was no issue, but the issues i mentioned earlier in this message was mentioned to them. Those issues are still occurring. This is a recall issue but when i put my VIN number in, my car shows that there is no recall on it. There was many people who mentioned this problem.
The vehicle started rumbling/vibrating/shaking when getting up to speed and at a consistent speed. Brought to an independent service center and was old that the torque converter is failing. No warning lamps or other problems prior to rumbling/vibrating that started on 5/22/25.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while pulling out of a parking spot in a parking lot, the vehicle stalled. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle and observed a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was not able to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,906.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH on the highway, the vehicle stalled. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired out-of-pocket. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
My 2021 Chevy Suburban Premier suffered a sudden internal engine failure due to collapsed lifters and a damaged camshaft. The vehicle began experiencing performance issues, including rough idling and loss of power. After taking it to a certified mechanic, it was confirmed that the lifters failed and caused significant damage to the camshaft, requiring a major repair that I had to pay for out of pocket. This issue is widely known among GM vehicles with the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines and has been the subject of numerous technical service bulletins and customer complaints. While my vehicle is not included in the current recall (NHTSA ID: 25V-274), which covers crankshaft and rod failures on L87 6.2L engines, this lifter failure is part of the same engine family and indicative of a broader defect in GM’s V8 engine platforms from 2021–2024. I’m requesting that NHTSA investigate these lifter and camshaft failures as a safety and reliability concern, and urge GM to expand the existing recall to include these known engine issues. Many customers, including myself, are incurring thousands of dollars in repair costs for problems that are clearly tied to manufacturer defects.
Sat may 3rd We went for tire change from that date since that day, every time we try to start the car there’s always a different warning light The warning light is never the same issue. On may 15 when we received a warning light about transmission we went to the dealership that day they said they were about two weeks backed up but flushed the transmission and paid $504 for the service. Since that day we also received numerous warning light which include. Driver window. Esc. Winshield fluid. Tire pressure. Lift gate open. Forward Collision System Unavailable. Your 2021 Chevrolet Suburban detects a battery, starter or connection issue. Lastly the check engine light came on and the car won’t start.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 20 MPH and approaching a light, there was an abnormal ticking and knocking sound coming from the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 25 MPH. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the vehicle had experienced engine failure. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 132,000.
The lifters in the engine are failing
Worried about the safety of driving this vehicle due to the numerous reports of the engine seizing while driving. I have read about there being hundreds of thousand vehicles with the same engine having this problem. Thanks
I am contacting you regarding a critical engine failure in my 2021 Chevrolet Suburban LT, which is equipped with the L84 5.3L V8 engine. Due to a valve lifter malfunction, the engine suffered catastrophic failure, with metal shavings found throughout the oil system and internal components. I’ve been quoted approximately $14,000 by the dealership/service center to replace the engine, and the vehicle is currently awaiting repair. I was driving the car with my son when the vehicle began to shake, make ticking noises, and the check engine light went on. I pulled off the road and several error codes popped up including "Service ESC" and "Service Traction Control." This is the second time that a lifter valve has failed on this vehicle. In 2022, the lifter valves on the left side were replaced under warranty. It appears one of the left side lifter valves failed again, this time causing significant cam shaft damage and damaging the engine. Given that this issue appears to be affecting many owners with similar engine configurations, I would appreciate your assistance in investigating this matter to see if these issues stem from possible manufacturing defects which could result in engine damage or failure. I reached out to General Motors to ask if I qualify for extended coverage or any known service programs to address this situation and they told me I should talk to the dealership because they are unwilling to offer assistance. I've attached receipts for repair of the lifter valve in 2022 and the current diagnosis of engine failure, cam shaft damage, and lifter valve failure. This vehicle is only four years old and was regularly serviced by General Motors. It is available for further inspection. Please let me know what other documentation or information you require. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 25 MPH, the vehicle was shaking and jumping and shut down unintendedly. The check engine warning light illuminated and was flashing. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that there was catastrophic engine failure and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed there was no recall on the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
While driving cross-country, my 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 (5.3L V8) experienced several progressive symptoms leading to total engine failure. For months prior, there was a noticeable coolant smell from the engine bay despite no visible leaks. Multiple Chevy/GM shops noted the smell, and pressure tests showed no external coolant loss. On the trip to Colorado, the engine ran normally, but at idle, the temperature would steadily rise to ~235°F before fans would engage. Upon arrival in Colorado, I found the coolant reservoir was low again. The final time the vehicle started, it shook violently at idle for nearly a minute before settling. The next day, it would crank but failed to start, and has not started since. There were no check engine lights or warning messages at the time of failure. A GM dealership has since diagnosed the engine as “locked up” and quoted a $14,500 remanufactured engine replacement (GM Part 19420610). I’ve been told my engine is the 5.3L V8 (RPO L84), which is currently not included in GM’s safety recall 25V-274 affecting similar failures in the 6.2L L87 engines. Right before this occurred, I had a NC inspection (passed), a fresh oil change the same day, and had coolant added. This failure happened without warning, while traveling out of state, leaving the vehicle stranded in a garage and requiring towing. The situation presented a safety risk and significant financial burden. Given the similarities in symptoms and failure type to the recalled L87 engines, I believe this may be a related manufacturing issue.
I bought the vehicle on January 11, 2025. Within 2 weeks the service leveling system indicator light came on the dashboard. The vehicle's front left air suspension system was not working properly and the vehicle lowered to the crash shield. The vehicle would not go over 55 miles and hour and was bouncing all over the road. The vehicle went back to the dealership and they reset and calibrated it. A few weeks later, the same thing happened. The vehicle again went down in the front, and was unsafe to drive. The dealership had the vehicle for 3 weeks, had difficulty assessing the situation and changed the front left air suspension arm. They told us it was fixed. We picked it up and as we were driving it home the service leveling system indicator came on, we brought it right back. They had the vehicle another 2 weeks and changed the solonoids, reset and recalibrated and had us pick it up. Within a few weeks the same thing happened, but worse. As I was driving it, an explosion sounded from the vehicle and the whole entire front of the vehicle lowered to the crash shield, making it extremely unsafe to drive. I have asked for the dealership to get a certified mechanic from GM to come and look at the vehicle and to start the repurchase process, no one is getting back to us and the vehicle is unsafe to drive.
My vehicle went from completely fine to having a loud knocking noise while I was driving 65 mph down the 4 lane highway. My vehicle lost power and slowed down. I was 50 miles from a dealership. They had to replace my entire engine and crankshaft. It cost over $12,000.00. This exact issue has been recalled by GM, but websites say my vehicle is not covered. The dealership had my vehicle for a month doing repairs.
After making a left turn on the street and picking up speed to 30mph the vehicle suddenly almost stopped and the engine raved up. It was so dramatic and unexpected that we thought the vehicle behind us was gonna hit us. Now vehicle only drives forward without shifting gears and doesn’t go reverse.
For the past 2 years my windshield wipers will fail randomly while using them during a rain storm. I will have to pull over and completely turn the vehicle off turn back on and they may start working again or restart a couple more times. I’ve taken it to the dealership twice over it and the one time it was when they didn’t work and no codes showed up. It just happened again while on the turnpike during a rain storm. It’s very scary because some roads you can’t pull over right away and It’s very hard to see when the windshield is completely covered and the wipers won’t work. A major safety issue. I wanted to take a video but it’s not safe when I’m driving and trying to see out the window. I have 2 little kids and currently pregnant so this is very scary with my kids in the car.
History of transmission shifting issues shortly after purchase (CPO from Dealership). Vehicle was taken to two separate dealerships, several times for this issue while still under the 100,000 mile CPO warranty. Dealerships claimed they could not replicate the issue, however problem continued. Now at 1198xx miles, the transmission failed while driving. was accelerating from stop and and the vehicle bucked, the rpms jumped, the service indicator illuminated, and when the vehicle stuck in limp mode. I spoke with one of the dealerships and explained the history and suggested my vehicle failure was exactly as described in the safety recall and they informed my VIN was not included in any recall or service campaign and the could do nothing for me. I called the GM customer service number, pled my case and was told the same thing
Car would not start. towed into dealer for repair. This is the second time this has occurred, a well-known issue with GM trucks. on both occasions was a defective part, Fuel pump power control module.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at undisclosed speeds, there was an abnormally loud banging sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the rods were bent, and the lifters needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The contact called the warranty company, who confirmed there was no repair coverage on the vehicle for the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,069.
While driving at normal highway speed, the vehicle speed is suddenly reduced and it feels and sounds like the transmission has shifted into low gear. The following warning light activated: Reduced Acceleration Drive with Care. The GM dealership service center stated that the transmission control valve body needed to be replaced. They indicated that this was a known issue. I believe a safety recall should be issued for this defective part.

Chevrolet is telling me my engine has failed at 75,000 miles. While driving on the highway recently I lost all power. I had my 3 kids in the car and was driving at highway speeds on a crowded highway and lost all power. I had to move over to the side of the road while in neutral with no power. Once I was on the side of the road, I was able to then turn the car off and turn it back on. I then drove to the nearest exit to get myself and family out of harms way. The car then began making a significant loud screeching/knocking noise. I have video of this noise. Ultimately was towed to a dealership where I am now told that the car needs a new motor. Additionally, I regularly service my vehicle at the Chevrolet dealerships with on time oil changes as soon as the car says I am due. Twice since owning, my car has been so low on oil that I have to immediately add oil in between oil changes. Car is currently at the Chevrolet dealership and has not been fixed at this point. The vehicle has only been inspected by Chevrolet service tech at the dealership. No warning lights or other symptoms, besides the oil issue have ever occured with this vehicle. Please help!

Vehicle suddenly died and wont restart. The fuel control module was previously replaced. There was a recall for certain VINs but mine wasn't included even though I experienced the failure of the recalled part! This is extremely dangerous for the vehicle to suddenly die under way. In 2022 the fuel control module was replaced after the dangerous failure. The NHTSA recall that was for this part but excluded my vehicle is N212332040. You need to immediately include other VINs for this recall! Today I experienced the same symptoms. The car died while in gear and running and would not restart. The dealer is diagnosing the issue to determine if it is the same fuel control module. I highly suspect it is. If it isn't, there is another extremely dangerous defect with this vehicle.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with fuel pump power control module failure. The contact was informed that the fuel pump power control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts to repair the vehicle had been ordered. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
My wife, [XXX] , was running some errands last night before taking our oldest daughter to dance practice and the check engine light appeared and the Suburban lost all power immediately. The engine wouldn’t restart and thank God she wasn’t on the highway. She called AAA roadside assistance who came out and checked the battery which was fine but ultimately had to get the vehicle towed to Bowman Chevrolet in Clarkston, MI. Vehicle is a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban and this is a serious situation that could have been catastrophic if this occurred on the highway that my wife was just on. The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the infotainment center malfunctioned and displayed a black screen. The contact stated that the backup camera was inoperable. The contact stated that due to the failure, the vehicle was unable to receive over-the-air updates from the manufacturer that were safety-related. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 88,000.
My sub starting making an unusual banging noise when shifting. I reported it once to the dealer and they chucked it up as cause by the vechioe being driving in auto and not set to 2 wheel drive or 4 but instead auto. Was odd, but it still happens and now there a recall but the site does not include my vin even though maybe this is my problem.
While driving, a message appeared on the dash that stated 'reduced acceleration'. My car was not able to accelerate over 40mph. The engine was much louder than normal and sounded like a loud fan was running. The check engine light came on as well.
Hi, my name is [XXX] . I have two major issues with my 2021 Chevrolet Suburban: The value body failed for the 2021 Suburban in December, causing engine power reduction and the engine transmission was not shifting properly. This was covered by my extended warranty, which I paid $2500 extra for at the time of purchase. Also, this VIN is for a Chevy Suburban Duramax Diesel. The Emissions Control Module ( ECM ) light has come on several times, starting from about 20K miles to now 61K miles. I noticed the ECM light comes on at about a 8K mile interval. I take it into the dealership and they have told me this is due to a software issue and then they reset the light. This has happened on at least 4 occasions since about 20K miles. However, now at 61K miles, they are telling me that the exhaust system has a leak and it may not be a covered repair under even my extended warranty. Basically, General Motors has kicked the can down the road on the ECM issue until it is no longer under warranty, and now they want me to pay for this expensive repair. This is wrong, I hope you can protect me and other Duramax owners from GM's unscrupulous business practices. You can reach me at [XXX] for more details. Thank you, I am considering legal action against GM for this issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
With no warnings from the vehicle, I noticed a loud knocking sound while driving home. I was able to make it home and have the vehicle towed to the dealer where it was found to be in engine failure due to failure of engine bearing. I had to have a complete engine replacement. My car only had 65k miles and was purchased brand new and had all regular maintenance completed at the local chevy dealership.
brake master cylinder failure, took car to chevy after brakes got super hard to push , luckily no accident , felt like no brakes, at the point of failure, brake light, abs light, check engine light all went on ,at some point abs and brake light went off but check engine light stayed on and screen on Dash indicated max speed 62 then in a couple of minute screen showed max speed 42 mph , then lights go off except check engine and vehicle works as it should it randomly does this in one day so vehicle was taken in to dealership where they had a hard time figuring out if thats the problem and contacted gm tech support gm and they said with these codes it should be the brake master cylinder, and it would cost me 3000.00 to fix. on an 80 000.00 car that's a 2021 with 82,000 miles and they are pretty certain that will fix the problem, I'm pretty sure I don't want to get in an accident at 65 to 70 mph and die I feel this is a huge safety issue and thank god wife and kids weren't in the car considering this is my wife's car to drive the kids around in
While attempting to regain entry onto a major highway, our engine had a major system failure and the entire vehicle started to violently shake. We were able to reexit the highway and get to safety. We were then able to slowly drive it to a service station where it was determined after two days, that it was a major engine failure and would need a full engine rebuild. We were in Missouri when this occurred, driving back from Christmas vacation with family, on our way home to Texas. We had to find a hotel and stay two nights there, then had to rent two cars- as there were no cars available large enough for our family of 6 and our luggage, to then drive back to Houston. We then had to have our car transported down here to our mechanic. The repairs that our mechanic completed: BTR Gen V DOD/AFM Conversion Kit $1301.75 Full synthetic oil change and oil filter $110.00 Prestone Dex-Cool 50/50 prediluted antifreeze/coolant 2@$33.23 ACDelco GM Original Spark Plug 8@$20.32 GM Spark Plug Wire Set $142.44 GM Camshaft $200.04 Cloyes Engine Timing chain tensioner $44.54 Standard Ignition Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor $47.85 Head Gasket, R&R $5010.00 Labor Oil Change $110.00 Labor Computer Programming $2000.00 Labor (reprogramming needed to shut off the Fuel Economy Management system that caused the camshaft to ultimately break) Total $9434.29 We were without our car for 4 months while this repair was conducted and the subsequent computer programming was problem solved. We learned there was a case already with your department, but waited to file out claim until we had the full repair and receipt from our mechanic. We could not afford to just sell the car as we would have gotten so little for it. Thus we didn't have much of a choice but to get it repaired. This week we are hearing of the massive recall of many GM vehicles, ours included, for this same problem. We are hopeful that we will get some sort of financial return to cover what we paid to fix their issue.
CAR BURNS EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL AND HAVE TO ADD REGULAR QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN THE MANDATORY OIL CHANGE. CONSIDERED VEHICLE COULD MALFUNCTION AND CAUSE AND ACCIDENT OR CATCH FIRE. DEALER SAID THEY HAVE RECALLS FOR OTHER CHEVY SUVS AND TRUCKS WITH SAME ISSUE BUT NOT MY PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL. THIS ISSUE WITH CHEVY'S BURNING OIL WARRANTS AN INVESTIGATION SINCE CHEVY IS NOT ADDRESSING THE ISSUE.
The fuel tank strap bolts became loose and fell out, causing the fuel tank to drop. The vehicle has the original fuel tank and to our understanding, it has never been removed. We purchased the vehicle new and are the only owners.
My car has 118,000 miles. The engine cam shaft just came apart, mechanic ordered new engine end of December and I’m told I’m still on a waiting list. I had to replace both sets of lifters when I had very few miles on car..of course the engine is now out of warranty. Thanks

My wife was driving the car witb our kids when the check engine light came on and it started struggling and smoking. We got it to autozone to be scanned. The scan showed that it was a misfire on cylinder 3. After a mechanic trying to troubleshoot the problem he found that there was no compression. We towed the vehicle to a Chevrolet dealership where the found that the lifters in 1 bank needs to be replaced. This a known issue and a letter of coverage has been issued. However I'm being told that my vin number is not covered even though it is the exact same issue.
I was driving our 2021 Chevy Suburban, which had ~107,000 miles on it, at approximately 75 miles per hour. With no other indication, the low oil pressure light came on, then within two seconds I lost all power (motor shut off) and lost electronics in the car. I had to man-handle the vehicle to get it off the road without power or dash controls. Our family was stranded near the California/Nevada border with no cell reception in the middle of the night for over seven hours. I spent a fortune having the vehicle towed to a Chevy dealership (Wild West Chevrolet in Yerington, NV) where they indicated that there was a main bearing failure which caused the engine to seize. A full L87 motor replacement is required. The motor is currently on backorder with GM due to the high number of L87 engine failures. GM has not provided an estimated date of when they plan to have the motor replaced.
Connecting rod bearing failure at 62,000 miles
I was sold a vehicle from a dealership in Green Bay Wisconsin under the impression all safety regulations were met. The day I drove it off the lot, I had issues with the back drivers' door, making wind noise. I had messaged the salesman, he stated it may have been the door seal. Days went by, it wasn't sitting well with me, I made an appointment with a local body shop in. regard's to the door and suspicion of something not right. I brought it to the body shop, they informed me, that the back air bags were deployed and stuffed back into the roof, body work on the left side was done incorrectly and is very unsafe to drive, seat belts where my children sit were finger tightened, frame is held on by a bolt etc. The body shop states that if this vehicle were to be in an accident, it would not sustain impact the way vehicles are designed to do so. The owner of the dealership I had bought from refuses to come to an agreement about this situation. I have all the paperwork and documents from the body shop along with another local dealership near me who I also brought it to look it over as well so the owner could understand that this vehicle should have never been able to be sold on his lot. They also agree that this is super unsafe and should not be driven until it is fixed properly and all safety standards should be met. They believe that it should have been totaled out, it is very obvious that the left side was hit and smashed in. I also asked the owner if he would feel safe for his children to drive in this vehicle and he said, “no” I have many documents/pictures/reports to share once needed.
The fuel pump power control module (p129F, I believe) failed. I was in the carpool line when the engine sputtered then turned off, and would not turn back on. The engine light also came on. I had to walk my children the rest of the way, then got a tow truck. There were no dash light or other indications of a problem ahead of time. My local GM dealership was not able to get to me for multiple days, so I towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The mechanic informed me that there was already a recall on this part (Recall number N212332040). I paid for the repair, and when I contacted GM, was told that my VIN was not included in this recall. I would like my VIN added to the recall and other VINs with this same part that were not originally included in the recall.
We were driving our Suburban and out of no where the check engine light starts flashing. Mind you we had no problems leading up to this very moment. We took it to a mechanic the very next day and were told we needed a new engine.
After purchasing the car, the engine oil low light came on after driving about 2,000 miles on a fresh oil change. We took the car to the Chevrolet dealer where they said the engine was over 2 quarts low on oil and recommended a fresh oil change. After another 2,000 miles of driving the low engine oil light came on again. We took it back to the same dealership and started the oil consumption test. After several months of oil checks, it was determined that the engine failed the test and service was recommended and would be covered under warranty. Extensive repairs were performed on the engine including piston replacement. After receiving the car back from repair, we continue to have the engine oil low life light appear after a few thousand miles of driving and have to add 2 quarts of oil to the engine. We contacted the Chevrolet dealership that performed the repairs and they said that prior warranty work would not be covered since we were now out of factory warranty. We were informed that we would have to go through the oil consumption test again and pay for any needed repairs. We're concerned that with investigation EA25007, our engine could experience the bearing failure and cause serious injury.
Rims keep cracking on the inside where the tire is sealed. This has happen a total of three times to both front and rear passenger side. Tire pressures are 36psi as recommended by manufacturer. No major pot holes or other road hazards have been hit.
The 22 inch rims on my vehicle are cast aluminum I'm assuming. I have had several cracks causing me to rapidly loose air on the tires while driving at highway speeds. I have had three cracks in different rims within the last week and have had the rims repaired twice. The vehicle has 75k miles on it. This is a major concern and safety issue. I've never seen that many cracks happen at once. Some say well your hitting potholes but that isn't the case here.
Yesterday marked the 2nd time that the front windshield wipers on my 2021 Chevy Suburban (58k miles) randomly stopped working while driving down the highway in a rainstorm. They would not come out of the resting position regardless on what setting they were put to on the wheel switch. They continued to not work for the hour drive back to my house. The last time this happened all fuses, motor, etc were checked and tested good. The wipers started working again a day or so later, using the windshield wiper fluid button to test. This marks the second time my family has been put in a situation driving on the highway in a rainstorm with the wipers randomly stopping to work and having to navigate to safety with extremely limited visibility. This appears to be a fairly common issue with newer GM vehicles with the auto sense technology, found plenty of forums with the same experience. The major concern I have is that when this happens the wipers don’t work at all in any mode. Even trying to run in manual mode rather than auto sense the wipers will not move from the resting position. It leaves a driver with zero way to clear rain and see when this randomly occurs.
