NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The 2023 suburban started shuttering on idle and loosing power on drive due to a misfire in bank 4, the fuel injector was changed, but the problem persisted. And now the dealer says that I need to change all 8 injectors. 2900 job on a car with 54000 miles. Crazy
My vehicle suddenly stalled while driving. I later replaced the battery and discovered the telecom module was damaged, making the OnStar system inoperable. GM disagreed with my warranty claim and required me to replace the module at my own expense. I discovered the same issue is common in various GM models from 2023-2025. My Suburban and Yukon both have the same issue, making them defective. However, GM will not provide a free replacement under warranty.
Driving on the expressway my vehicle would not accelerate over 53mph. I then noticed the vehicle losing power where I then had to pull over onto the shoulder. The vehicle lost power and would not restart or go into neutral. Ultimately the vehicle had to be towed
Without warning my 2023 Chevy suburban started making a terrible noise, lost all power and died in the middle of the road. I was unable to restart the vehicle. It was towed to the nearest dealer 75 miles away and has been sitting there for 30 days with no idea when an engine will be available.
6.2L L87 Engine Failure with 36,000 miles on it. While driving on the highway and attempting to pass another vehicle that was traveling on a 2-lane highway the car suddenly died, and the transmission shifted into neutral. When I noticed the vehicle would not accelerate, I looked down and saw the push to start warning and tried to restart the vehicle with no response. I had to allow the vehicle I was passing to get ahead of me before I could swap back into that lane to get out of the way of oncoming traffic eventually coasting onto the side of the road to a complete stop. The vehicle I was passing slowed down after the engine died not knowing what I was doing and drove right beside me blocking the lane until I signaled for them to go ahead so I could get back into the lane. If the vehicle in the oncoming lane had not slowed down to allow me time to get back into the proper lane a head on collision would have occurred. This 2023 vehicle was purchased used 14days prior from a GM certified dealership and had no warning lamps on the dash and showed no indication a failure was about to occur. The vehicle was driving perfectly normal until the failure occurred. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealership it was determined the engine had failed due to crankshaft bearings. The dealership explained there were no available replacement GM engines and could possibly be a lead time of 6 months before a replacement engine could arrive. I purchased the vehicle for $60,000 and the engine fails 14 days later and now I could be without a vehicle for 6 months and the dealership did not have any loaner vehicles available.
I pulled into a parking spot and the car died right before I shut it off. I came out and restarted it to leave and it backed up about 5 feet and died and would never start again. There was never any prior indication that it had any problems. I bought it new and always had a Chevy dealer do the required maintenance. I was told today that it would need a new engine because the engine has seized up; however, until they do a full tear down of the engine, they said they cannot tell me exactly what has cause the problem. I have heard of others having problems with the 6.2 engine so I thought I would report it. I don't have any paperwork yet from the dealer to upload.
My 2023 High Country Chevrolet Suburban's V8 6.2L engine failed 6 hours from home while our family was en route to Colorado. It was towed to the closest city and the dealership informed me the engines are on a nationwide backorder and it could be months before one is made available. The dealership stated that GM will not release information as to where the customer is on "the list" of recipients. My car has 44,000 miles and is well maintained. It has been in the shop for other repairs - suspension issues, tech package problems (wifi, onstar, google and navigation not working properly). Spoke with GM representative and was told if the engine makes it onto the recall list the repair will be expedited. Not sure how that is possible with so many engines failing. Maybe GM/Chevrolet will be forced to increase production.
My 2023 Chevrolet Suburban with the 5.3L V8 engine has experienced lifter failure twice within less than [20,000 miles]. Both times the vehicle developed a misfire, engine belt like noise and was diagnosed by the Chevrolet dealership as having collapsed AFM/DFM lifters. All oil changes have been done at the dealership using GM-approved oil. The issue appears to be a known problem on 2021–2023 GM vehicles with the 5.3L L84 engine. GM has a technical service bulletin (PIP5776H) regarding lifter collapse, but no permanent fix has been provided. I am concerned this could lead to engine failure or stalling while driving, creating a safety hazard.
Transmission valve control failed. Rear wheels locked up. Vehicle downshifted quickly. No injuries. Vehicle is at dealership for repairs. No warnings.
Middle of engine started making a tapping sound. Went to closest dealership service department. They said it was most likely an issue with the valve train but we should be able to get home. Within 10 miles, the engine completely seized up while on the highway loosing all power. Was able to get to the side of the highway. Towed the vehicle to the dealership that we bought from. They said it was going to need a new engine just as soon as they could find one.
Engine failed while driving on highway. Would not restart. Towed to Chevrolet dealer who determined engine full of metal debris requiring total engine replacement.
Without any warning driving 65 mph down a freeway the suburbans motor totally shut down. We had to cross over 2 lanes without getting hit by all the traffic. No dashboard lights ever came on until after we got onto the shoulder and sat there for an hour then the check engine light came on. We got stranded 2 hours from our vacation spot in AZ and now we’re stranded 1,600 miles from our home in MN. After 5 hours in the middle of the desert the tow truck finally showed up and towed the vehicle to Sands Dealership in Surprise AZ. We have never had any other problems before this happened. Never thought At 2023 vehicle with 30,000 miles would blow Motor. Waiting to hear from GM on what our options are to get it fixed and get us back home!
The engine seized while I was driving. The dealer discovered a crack in the engine block, which caused the oil to leak out. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired at 60,000 miles. The dealer replaced the engine with a brand-new one. So, I had to cover the full repair cost of approximately $6,830.29 out of pocket.
The vehicle was purchased brand new from the manufacturer. Because the third-row seating was rarely used, it was not immediately apparent that the car was delivered without one of the required seatbelts. Once the issue was discovered, it was promptly reported to the manufacturer. However, the customer service representative refused to address the problem, stating that the warranty period had expired. This is a serious safety hazard. A missing seatbelt poses a significant risk of severe injury or death in the event of an accident, and it requires immediate corrective action.
I was cruising at 45 - 50 mph and the vehicle went into NEUTRAL, shut off, would not restart, and would not shift into drive. I pulled into a Publix. I pressed the start /Stop button and the dash turned off. I turn pressed the brake and pressed the ignition button and the Suburban started up. Drove out of the parking lot and began accelerating when the vehicle shut off again. I could not restart the vehicle. I was able to coast into a gas station parking lot, but half of the vehicle was sticking out into the road. The vehicle would not go into neutral and would not start. The vehicle was towed to Palm Chevrolet in Ocala, Florida.
My 6.2L V8 engine blew up while I was driving across bridge and I barely had enough time to get it off the road out of traffic.
I was on [XXX] in Athens, Ga. Going about 65mph in the left lane, casually passing a slow truck. it was rainy, in a construction zone, heavy traffic. With no warning lights or indication there was a problem the engine suddenly died and shifted itself into neutral. I had just started going up hill, no left lane median but I managed to barely make the right shoulder, when the vehicle came to a stop it shifted into Park, from that point forward the vehicle was locked down. I was so close to the traffic I had to fold the drivers mirror. I literally sat on the passenger side of the truck with my seat belt fastened because I expected to be hit. Took about 1.5 hours for tow truck. The tow truck driver was nearly hit trying to load the truck, several accidents were narrowly avoided by people trying to move over. Truck taken to Auto Gallery Chevrolet in Commerce GA, after three weeks they confirmed the engine had to be replaced and it would be done under warranty. I have not been told the exact nature of the failure, but they did confirm the engine could not be rotated. They could not tell me how long it would take to find and engine but there was another vehicle with the same issue that was ahead of me. To the best of by knowledge Chevrolet has accepted the failure report completed by the technician but have not otherwise engaged. I have not been provided any documentation from the dealership. Issue: The vehicle intermittently displays a “Key Not Found” or “No Key Detected” message on the dash and refuses to start, despite both original factory-issued key fobs being present and having fresh batteries. The issue began in summer 2023 and has progressively worsened. The vehicle has stranded our family multiple times, sometimes requiring a tow, family impact, missed obligations. Luckily for all urgent needs like trips to the ER or Urgent care, we were able to use our other vehicle, but we no longer have that vehicle and it is important that our sole vehicle be a reliable one. Impact: •Two emergency room visits and multiple urgent pediatric appointments affected •Forced to rely on one family vehicle for months •Paid for tow and fob batteries •Multiple instances of no rental coverage •GM and dealers often declined documentation or action due to the issue being “intermittent” ⸻ Request: We believe there is a systemic defect in the Suburban’s keyless entry/ignition system (likely receiver or antenna module). We request that NHTSA investigate and that GM be required to issue a recall or permanent repair for affected models. This issue poses a safety concern and has created financial and logistical hardship for our family.
Traveling at high speed on major highway and engine stopped. Unable to get car restarted and in fact the instrument panel and information center blanked out. Was forced to have vehicle towed approximately 60 miles to purchasing dealership for diagnosis. Dealer indicates engine is seized and will require replacement. Vehicle has had excellent, verifiable, maintenance record. We have owned this vehicle for approximately 18 months and currently has approximately 62,000 miles. Upon research, I have learned that our vehicle is not the only GM product to have this premature failure.
Traveling [XXX] on [XXX] through Pascagoula, Ms at approximately 70mph. The engine revved high then put itself into Neutral and shutdown. I was able to coast safely to the shoulder of the road. There had been no prior warning of potential problems. The vehicle engine seized up and could not be placed into neutral for the tow service to safely load it. [XXX], driving on [XXX] at mile marker [XXX], 4 miles east of Moorcroft, Wyoming, the vehicle lost power and engine quit. We made it to the side of the road and vehicle would not start. The temperature was negative 5 degrees. With cell phone service, we were able to secure a ride and a towing company before we got extremely cold in the car. The vehicle was towed by Manning's Towing of Gillette, Wyoming to White's Frontier Motors, 444 Skyline Drive, Gillette, WY 82718. After 10 days in the shop, the service department diagnosed the engine was inoperable and the vehicle would need a new engine. There was no indication of the engine failure prior to its failure. To date I have had 15 communications with the service department at the dealership and GM Motors with no resolution or date of repair. In October 2024, the vehicle just shut off while we were driving down the road. Had to pull off to the side and got it going after about 5 minutes. Couldn't get the vehicle to replicate the problem so nothing chevy could do. No check engine light. No codes were given. On January 4th the vehicle started making a horrible noise. But then stopped making the noise on January 5th. Called Olympia, Washington Chevrolet to get it in to be looked at. Soonest appointment they had was February 5th. I made the appointment. February 11th, the engine seized and quick working completely. February 13th, had the vehicle towed to the nearest Chevrolet. Getting the vehicle into neutral and on the tow truck was terrifying. Makes me question the transmission. My vehicle has been at Chevrolet since January 13th. Today is March 11th. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle once it does get fixed. It has left me stranded twice. Once when it just shut off and another when it actually broke down for good.
I was driving my family to San Antonio for a vacation when the vehicle suddenly stopped working. The display read restart engine but the car just abruptly stopped and I was forced to pull to the side of the road. Once the car came to a complete stop the car shifted into park and could not shift out of park. The car would not start, display would read conditions not met? I had to have the car towed to the dealership. They are giving me a hard time.
I was driving on [XXX] in rural Montana (zero cell phone coverage) on [XXX] (freezing weather, snow packed roads). Without warning the suburban just shut down. It seemed to still have "power". interior lights worked ect. but the engine just died. I tried to pull mostly off of the road but I couldn't get it entirely off of the road because of the snow pushed off of the road by snow plows. I tried to restart the vehicle several times but it would not turn over. I assumed it was an electrical issue at the time. There was zero warning that there was any engine issue. When a mechanic finally had the opportunity to look into the issue he told me the engine has seized up. I had to walk several miles in the cold hoping to get cell phone service to get to a place to warm up. I also couldn't get the vehicle off of the road and I was sure the vehicle was going to be hit or cause an accident on the narrow highway. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 2,000.
The engine stopped working. I was stranded on the highway and needed a tow. It was towed to a Chevrolet dealership in Alexandria MN, where it was diagnosed with a spun rear main bearing in the engine needed to be replaced. There were no warning lamps or anything prior to the engine completely shutting off and not being able to start again.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine made an abnormal sound. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000(Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the dealer declined to inspect the engine. The contact was informed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

Brand new 2023 suburban radiator ruptured at 14,000 miles. Radiator and hoses replaced April 2024 and the car has ongoing issues since then. Most recently the car has a strong coolant smell and the dealership states they cannot find a leak or source of the smell. I have worked with 2 different dealerships on this matter. I was told that the radiator was a “poorly manufactured part” when it originally ruptured. No safety warnings ever appeared even when the oil was dripping out of the bottom after the original rupture. Oil and coolant had mixed in the coolant reservoir and no warning light ever signaled. The most recent coolant smell poses a safety risk to my families respiratory system as the manufacturer states they cannot find the source of the smell and have tried to return to vehicle to me twice with the strong odor coming out of the vents. We have had the coolant reservoir flushed several times as oil remains in their, hoses replaced, and ongoing service visits for a year for the same thing since the original rupture in April 2024.
The power steering on the vehicle had failed on December 10th, 2023. The sign was displayed on the dashboard for the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to Sunrise Chevy and stayed with them for a month for repair and they have been unable to repair the issue. They said the rack and pinion had gone bad on this brand new car. This is very dangerous as the safety of myself as well as others on the road are compromised due to faulty steering problems.
While driving on the highway at night during rainy conditions the wipers stopped in the up position, and at the same time, the headlights turned off. After a few seconds they resumed normal operation. My headlights were in the auto position and my wipers were also in the automatic setting. Being as that I was on a highway at night, in the rain, and going approximately 65mph surrounded by traffic, this was an extremely dangerous situation to be in. Without headlights and windshield wipers, my windshield was immediately obstructed and I was unable to see the road without headlights. More so, other traffic might have had trouble seeing my vehicle. This problem has not been replicated by myself or a dealer. It has been random in nature. When the incident happened, there were no warning lights on the gauge cluster or anything else inside the vehicle that seemed to be affected.
While driving the vehicle on an extended road trip trip on the interstate the vehicle randomly shut off while driving at highway speeds. When the vehicle turned off all interior and exterior lights did not work. The engine turned off. In order to begin driving again the vehicle needed to be restarted. This issue happened 3 separate times. In between, the vehicle has been turned off. It is a safety issue to have your vehicle turn off randomly while driving at any speed. The issue has not been reproduced by the dealer. The vehicle has been seen by the dealer and stated "they are unable to find any issue" There was not indication before or after the 3 events that would indicate issue.
Vehicle had 14,000 miles and tires were rotated by dealership twice, last one 3 weeks ago. Was driving 55 mph and had a sudden complete deflation and stopped immediately. Tire is completely separated. The outer sidewall is completely separated from the rest of the tire. The tire has never had an injury or other issues. The tire rotation was at Gerry Lane Chevrolet in Baton Rouge, LA. I took the tire in the same day to Gerry Lane Chevrolet service department and they were not helpful. They did not even look at the tire. I am having all 4 tires replaced tomorrow at Costco and will keep the damaged tire and 3 others for any forensic evaluation by your department or designate. I am concerned that this maybe the canary in the coal mine and if there is a manufacturing defect other lives may be at risk. Look forward to urgent follow up. Continental tire has had similar problems with sudden blowouts. 14000 miles properly maintained.
Automatic Emergency Braking system activated at ~77mph. Essentially I had started braking appropriately and at about the same time the AEB system seemed to conclude more breaking was needed. This led to brief loss of vehicle control when brakes COMPLETELY LOCKED at high rate of speed ~77mph. According to vehicle manual this system should not activate at speed great than 50mph (photo attached). This is dangerous because i could have lost control and/or someone behind me could smash into me. My vehicle does not have adaptive cruise. Vehicle and other systems otherwise work perfectly. As a side note the extreme brake application at high speed caused cargo within the vehicle to slam forward and destroy the windshield, in addition to being a scary event.
I drove a 2019 Ford Explorer with Ford Sync, which integrated well with my Android phone to allow handsfree access to Google Maps or Waze for navigation, voice control of my phone for speech-to-text, simple Google queries, like "who wrote the song American Pie," etcetera. Steering wheel controls could also be used to make or disconnect phone calls. It was a very safe, efficient, satisfying, hands-free driving experience provided at no-cost. Unfortunately, I traded that vehicle in on a 2023 Chevy Suburban, which has an Android Auto based infotainment system. This system can be safe and efficient, but ONLY IF YOU PAY A SUBSCRIPTION. Otherwise, it is VERY UNSAFE. Things that won't work without a subscription include: "Hey Google" voice commands, steering wheel phone controls, instrument cluster road speed display. There are workarounds for some of these items, such as pressing the microphone icon in the infotainment center to initiate voice commands, but these workarounds require the driver to take their attention away from driving.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was repaired. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed again; however, the vehicle accelerated and failed to stop. The contact also stated that the radio display screen failed to function. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
There were no accidents or near accidents but the computer system was spitting out different problems and telling me that different system were needing service such as the ESC system, the steering wheel column l, collision traction , etc plus the engine light came on. Thus occurred on the 20th of June. I took it in for service and they said they fixed the problem but then while coming home on the 22nd the system started acting up again. Took it back to the dealership and they said the computer lost communication. They had to keep my vehicle because they cannot figure out jow to adjust the computer harness and why I am continuing to get the error codes. This vehicle is only 4 months old (3/11/23). I am concerned that could be a major problem if it cannot be fixed.
Driving the vehicle on an interstate highway with the flow of traffic at 70 mph, without warning the engine shut off. This caused loss of speed and loss of power steering, almost causing me to be hit in the rear end twice at highway speeds. There were no warning lights or any instrument indication prior to the failure. After barely being able to get the vehicle into the brakedown lane, the vehicle would not restart. The electronics all worked, there were no warnings or indicator lights but the engine would not start despite multiple attempts by myself and the tow truck driver. The vehicle is currently at the dealership being diagnosed.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. Additionally, the windshield wipers were inoperable. On another occasion, while driving at approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was a loss of communication with the control module, steering, gateway module, engine, body control module, and brakes. The dealer retrieved DTC codes: U0101, U0131, U0146, U152B, U160F, and U1561. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
On Star module failure. The module controls many different safety features and it has failed and has been on a backorder for months creating a safety issue every day.
Vehicle was purchased new, has 2900 miles on it. The service safety restraint system light came on. I know this has been on going issue in past on these vehicles and want it reported and documented.
My 2023 Chevy Sububan Z71 wipers sometimes does not working when I driving on raining days since I bought it new and took it to dealers many times can not fix it
Question 1) I’m experiencing bubbling under the factory paint and it’s available for inspection Question 2) Unknown Question 3) Yes Question 4) Yes it has been inspected by Chevrolet dealership Question 5) I noticed the defects when I bought the vehicle brand new in 3/1/2023
The car shifted into neutral while I was driving. I was slowing down to stop at a traffic light when it happened.
Multiple time the full safety camera system has failed. The front rear and 360 degree view camera have intermittently failed multiple times. Restarting the vehicle has had no effect on restoring functionality of the very vital rear back up camera, front camera, parking and pedestrian sensors. This is a random occurrence, has happened at least 5 separate occasions since purchase, and occurs intermittently. Date is the last time this issue occurred.
