NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
2 ISSUES - 1) vehicle repaired 5 times for "transmission" problem by replacing wiring harnesses. On 5th attempt, the GM factory part or the technician caused the Tahoe to catch fire. Worst part is that it happened 1 hour after test driving and parking the car at their dealership, thankfully, I would normally have driven it home and it would have destroyed my home too. GM investigated and was unable to determine cause. 2) each time the "transmission" error occurred the GM car went into what they call the "limp" mode. The car immediately loses speed control and drifts to about 35 mph until you have control of the accelerator. I was on an interstate going +70 mph to pass a semi and immediately after passing the car went into Limp Mode, the semi nearly rear ended me and then passed me blowing his horn and cursing me. GM could certainly correct this latter issue by creating a warning on the screen that gives the driver ample time to pull over and address the problem as they do when DEF fluid (this was a diesel) is low and will give warning to add DEF or reduce speed after so many additional miles are driven. The former issue needs to be addressed immediately too, I've noted 4 other drivers on social media that had similar fires. Both of these issues could have resulted in serious injury to me or my family.
The vehicle experienced a catastrophic control arm failure at low speed while turn left onto a residential street. the brake line severed, the wheel began to roll under the drivers side of the vehichle.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a left turn, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled in the middle of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the gear shifter had seized in park. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.
The failed component was reported to be the Coolant Surge Tank. This component cracked and begin to leak engine coolant causing the vehicle to overheat and become undrivable. This failure also lead the inoperability of the heating system inside the cabin of the vehicle. The failure of this component is widespread knowledge in the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon ownership community. In some cases dealerships are purposely marking up the cost of replacement components due to the scarcity caused by this failure and production issue within GM. The only symptoms of this issue were overheating and inoperable cabin heater. No warning lights or messages were displayed.
alternator In 2021 Tahoe has went bad twice now! I’m on my third one. Obviously there is a issue for this needing to be replaced so often.
This is the second engine I’ve had replaced since I bought the vehicle in December 21, 2023. The first engine failed in August of 2022 while I was driving on the highway. The vehicle began to smoke and shut down while I was driving on the highway. The vehicle shut down and I had to use the current momentum of the vehicle to pull over to the shoulder. The vehicle would not come out of gear and would not restart. I complained of transmission problems ever since the engine was replaced. The service department escalated the concerns to the GM engineers who never gave directions to check the transmission fluid or physically check the transmission. January 24 of this year I was on the highway driving to work when the vehicle again shut down. The dash stated restart the vehicle. While in motion the vehicle was trying to shift to neutral. I informed the dealer of this message and they claim they took note of it. With the vehicle not being able to start or move out of gear the tow truck had to drag the vehicle onto the bed of the tow truck. This also occurred on the first engine failure as well.
The fuel pump power control module failed. We were driving on the interstate going around 75mph with traffic. The car suddenly lost power dropped to 60, 40, 20 in 5 seconds. We barley made if off the hwy`s left side when the Tahoe died. Would not start back up and locked in park. Had to be towed on a flat bed dragged up the bed and brought to the Chevy dealer who confirmed the fuel pump power control module failed and replaced under warranty. We have a 2021 Tahoe, there is a recall for this part but it did not include our vin. Really scary breakdown and could have been hit by another car.
2ND row seat and 3RD ROW head rest will not stay up.
Drivers side headlight is stuck pointing down making it hard to see in the dark. Vehicle is a marked police patrol vehicle.
The vehicle stalled without warning, while driving. After taking it to the dealership they said it’s the Fuel Pump Power Control Module. After further research I see this has been under recall, however, my vin doesn’t show a recall for this.
The indicator light 'Service Safety Restraint System' beeps and comes on about every 5 minutes when driving. Sometimes it doesn't come on at all. There is no rhyme or reason for why it happens.
The truck had an airbag malfunction notice on the information center. We took the truck to the dealer and was told that it was an electrical problem with the airbags. That the only way to have it covered under warranty was for the vehicle to be under the bumper to bumper warranty. The truck at the time the mileage was 39844. We had the truck fixed since it was a safety issue. It cost $420+ to fix it. We feel that it should have been covered due to a safety issue.
The airbags failed to deploy in my 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe after being involved in an accident where another vehicle t-boned my vehicle on the passenger side front end to rear end causing severe damage and pushing my vehicle with great force. A police report was taken by officers that responded to the traffic accident. A claim was filed with my auto insurance and my 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is currently being repaired as it was not deemed a total loss. Myself and my passengers were injured and received and continue receiving medical treatment for our injuries; our safety was definitely placed at risk. Before being involved in this accident, warning alerts/lamps would appear on the vehicle’s dashboard indicating to “service the safety restraint system” and also to “open then close passenger window” which in turn led me to take the vehicle in for service however the dealer said it could not be duplicated nor did the computer show any alerts. After the accident, I Contacted General Motors and filed a claim for the non deployment of the airbags, they in turn are conducting their investigation.
While sitting at a stop sign the vehicle began to stall. I was able to drive 50 feet and it died in the road. The Tahoe is not getting fuel to start. Starter continues to try and engage upon start but the vehicle never engage. The fuel pump drive module seems to be an issue. I can't get the car out of park to have it towed to the Chevrolet dealership. This is consistent with other Tahoe recall vehicles having the same issue.
The vehicle stalled without warning, while driving. After taking it to the dealership they said it’s the Fuel Pump Power Control Module. After further research I see this has been under recall, however, my vin doesn’t show a recall for this.
at 13,540 miles, the drivers headlight started pointing to the ground instead of out front of the car. The headlight adjuster screw (inside the complete headlight assembly) had failed and was replaced under warranty. Then again at 35,250 mile the same thing happened again. Dealer claims GM will not do a goodwill warranty and wants $350-400 to take the headlight assembly off he car and send pictures to GM to see if GM will assist with replacement costs. Obviously this is a manufacturing defect or quality control issue. As 90% of my driving is done at night, it is unsafe for me to drive this vehicle at night.
Vehicle is sputtering and jerking while driving When slowing to a stop vehicles engine will shut off. I do know that the 2021 Tahoe has recalls on the fuel pump issues but not sure why my vin number isn’t covered under this recall. This is a 2 year old vehicle and already has recalls on this year model on its fuel pump. At this point it is barely driveable and is a danger for myself and my family to drive.
Fuel Pump Module malfunctioned while driving, causing vehicle to shut down in middle of street. Very alarming when car died while driving, fortunately was not driving at a high speed or on a busy street/highway and was able to move to an exit lane without incident since no shoulder on street, did cause quite a traffic jam (very stressful). Vehicle was towed to dealership after could not be jumped started. Dealership confirmed faulty fuel pump module. Currently at dealership & will be for a while due to part backlog. Received no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this incident.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe equipped with Good Year Tires, Tire Line: Wrangler Trail Runner AT, Tire Size: 275/60/R20, and DOT number M6W0JA3R3121. The contact stated that while entering her driveway, the driver's side front tire, wheel, and hub detached from the vehicle and crashed into an unknown parked vehicle located in the driveway. The contact was unconscious for a period of time, and she woke to the vehicle sliding against the parked vehicle and garage. The contact stated that she was unconscious, but no medical attention was provided. There were no reports of air bag deployment, fire, or a police report filed. OnStar notified her that her front driver's side tire had a problem. The contact's neighbor, who is an independent mechanic, stated that the tire broke and detached. The contact called a local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage of the tire and the vehicle was approximately 14,200.
On Wednesday,Sept20 2023 I was traveling eastbound in the passing Lane on interstate 90 in New York when my Chevy tahoes motor began shaking violently, chugging, and losing power. The check engine light illuminated. The engine stalled as I frantically tried to move to the berm. There is a lot of large semi traffic on that road and I had a difficult time maneuvering safely without power to get onto the side of the road. I was unable to move completely into what I felt to be a safe area. I continued to try to start the motor after about 10 minutes I was finally able to get it started and move it to an exit where it was towed to community Chevrolet in Meadville Pennsylvania. The Chevy dealer at this point has told me it is a fuel pump problem and they are on back order and there is a strike by the auto workers. They are unsure as to when I can have this problem remedied with the parts that are needed.
My truck is a2021 Chevy Tahoe Z71 and my motor knocking real loud I was told it’s a problem with the lifters My car is not old enough to habe lifter problems It started knocking a year ago I was told change the oil but I always change my oil on time now it’s way louder than a year ago
Wife was driving home from work, vehicle started with no issues and she did not notice anything abnormal as she started her commute home, roughly 20 minute commute. She noticed the vehicle was vibrating, mildly at first and progressively getting worse. When she came to a stop at red light, she noticed the vibrating was worse at idle. She did not note any warning or cautions, she contacted me, i advised her to attempt to make it home. Once the light turned green, she accelerated and noticed the vehicle smoking, she pulled over into a parking lot, parked and shut it off. By this time all the warning in vehicle were flashing, battery and oil pressure gauges were fluctuating, check engine light was flashing, traction control, and other adaptive sensors i.e. blind spot, HUD where signals were displayed as off or not functioning. I was able to drive the vehicle to .4 miles to the dealership service center where we purchased the vehicle from in 2021 brand new off the lot. This occurred on 6 September 2023, still awaiting final diagnostic from from service department. They think its the lifter on the engine that failed, but they have disassemble engine to make exact determination. Once I receive diagnostic/invoice details I can provide that, luckily vehicle is still under warranty.
High pitched whine during during acceleration.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that the front headlights were extremely dim while driving at night. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic informed the contact that the headlight adjusters were defective and had caused the headlights to shift downwards. The contact was informed that the entire headlight module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
We were driving down the road and as I tried to accelerate the car would not go. Then I realized the car said push to start. My husband tried to push the neutral button and told me to restart it but I said you have to push the brake. All this is happening as we are coasting down a main road with speed limits of 55mph and my family is in the vehicle (including 2 toddlers in the back seat). Once we coast to a gravel area off the road I push the brakes and try to restart. My dash goes all black and I try to restart. It tells me battery low push to start. The starter engages and stays engaged until I push the start button again to turn off. The screen tells me it is shutting down functions to save battery. The check engine light is on. We tried 3x with same results. Finally we get out and my parents come to us. Within 15 mins of the initial incident, my husband and dad get in and start my vehicle. My dad suspected the fuel pump. The fuel was right under 1/4 tank but not low enough for the fuel light to be on. They drove to the fuel station, approximately 2 miles away, filled up the tank and drove it to an auto parts store who connected it to a diagnostic machine and it read fuel pump. They drove it back to my home, approximately 2 more miles. The check engine light is still on. I will call the dealership tomorrow. The vehicle has 23,000 miles and is still under manufacturer warranty.
Driving the car and brake system failure. Esc failure and front collision failure almost hit a car. Truck speed warning no faster then 62 miles per hour
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.
While driving at night, the vehicle instrument cluster suddenly blacked out. All driver information pertaining to speed, fuel, tachometer, oil pressure and convenience lighting failed. The entire instrument cluster was an unlit black hole. I called GM and they advised there was no reports of this issue and no recalls pertaining to my specific vehicle number. A quick on line Google search revealed service bulletin [XXX].The GM associate I spoke with said they could not confirm or deny that other complaints of this problem had been brought to their attention. She stated that all parts in all their vehicles are vin number specific and that it’s possible I’m an isolated incident. I feel GM Is aware of this dangerous issue and should immediately issue a safety recall before the effected vehicles are involved in fatal crashes after being startled by this blackout event. This is clearly a driver safety issue that GM is not being proactive addressing. Kind Regards [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] ) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed at night, the instrument cluster went blank. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
I was driving down the highway and my car simply stopped moving, pressed on the gas and nothing. Had it towed and the dealership said it was the fuel pump power control module which there was a recall on but I never received it. I was in a very dangerous situation and I am not happy.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, the "Service Safety Restraint" massage was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the front driver's side seat interior air bag connector was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 41,000.
I was north of Pittsburg on Sunday 30 July 2023 when I seen that rain was approaching. I turned on my rain sensing wipers and as the rain approached and turn into a down pour I had NO wipers. Couldn't see where I was going, went to the left and hit rumble strips so I went right and heard the rumble strips there. Stopped and almost caused a pile up. Took it to the dealer on 03 August 2023 and the dealer (Walker Brothers) Edinboro,PA. trouble shot my vehicle and then ordered me a new wiper motor with NO idea when it will be in.
My wife was driving our vehicle and had (fortunately) just turned onto our quiet street. As she was heading towards our driveway, the car turned off. We couldn’t figure out the issue. After paying for a tow to Sterling Chevrolet in Mount Pleasant, SC, we learned that the fuel pump system had died. This was at 36,071 miles (71 miles over our warranty). We were then told that there had not been a safety recall on the fuel system for our 2021 Tahoe z71. It wasn’t until later that we learned there HAD been a recall and I’m not sure how to handle this. The recall occurred before we took possession of the vehicle (8 months before), thus we were never notified. Per the maintenance records, the fuel system had never been repaired nor was a part replaced on this vehicle. Thus, I believe our vehicle would roll up under this recall and we should be reimbursed for the repair expense.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while turning left or right, there was a grinding and scratching sound coming from underneath the front-end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the wheel was rubbing against the wheel well. The dealer completed a tire adjustment. The contact noticed over time that the tread on the front tires had been wearing very quickly. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who determined that the lower control arms had failed. The lower control arms were replaced, and the front wheels were re-aligned. The failure persisted causing the contact to have the wheels aligned 6 to 8 times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Service Safety Restraint" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The dealer confirmed that the air bags would not deploy as needed in the event of a crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that after coming to a stop, upon depressing the accelerator, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The contact stated that the Forward Collision Avoidance warning light illuminated, and the vehicle inadvertently stopped with no vehicles or objects nearby. The contact stated that the Forward Collision Avoidance system was deactivated to prevent the failure from recurring. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 8,500.
Purchased a 2021 Tahoe in late 2020 - May of 2021 the car started leaking water during a rain storm into the main cabin. Brought it to the dealership and they couldn't find any issues. Fast-forward to 2023 and it happened again in May and June. Brought the car to dealership and was told that the sunroof drains were clogged and it's a maintenance issue. I contacted GM and after about 2 months they had a field tech look at it....found that it wasn't a maintenance issue but a sunroof drainage tube that was installed incorrectly. I received an email saying that they would replace the tube and front carpet but I need to pay 50% of the bill. All the carpets and roof liner have been affected by the leaking and the car smells like mildew. I would expect them to at least replace everything and pay 100%. If they were responsible they would take the car and replace it with a new car for me. I purchased a $65,000+ vehicle with a factory defect that has caused water leaking into the car and i don't know if there will be future issues with electrical or mold.
Sudden engine shutdown in the middle of traffics. Vehicle was towed to a Chevrolet dealer. Chevrolet dealer replaced fuel pump power control module.
I started my vehicle and I pulled it out of my garage. Whenever I went to push the brakes down before pulling out of my driveway, it seemed like the brake pedal was higher than it usually is because my shoe caught the edge of the peddle due to where I am used to feeling the top end of it to decompress it. sometimes I contribute that that to the type of footwear that I have on but I was wearing the same shoes I had worn driving the vehicle only 1 hour ago. I was not sure why that was but I kept pulling out of the driveway (maybe something was stuck to the bottom of my shoe?) I continued to pull out and drove up my road to the next intersection where there were vehicles in front and behind me at that point. As I approached the intersection, slowing down to 25ish mph, I decompressed my brake peddle and all sorts of messages about brake failure started to appear in my control center and the peddle went all the way to the floor without fully stopping the vehicle. It seemed to be able to slow the vehicle down but very so slightly. Luckily, the people ahead of me continued to drive forward and the road was going uphill so the vehicle slowed on its own due to the terrain, at which time, I advised my daughter who was in the backseat to hold on that I needed to put the car in Park while we were still moving slightly. We were slowed to about 2mph and I put the car in Park. I looked down at the brake peddle and there was a fliud that had leaked out on top my all weather floor mats (non absorbent). Luckily, we were not involved in a collision but it was only due to the terrain and the fact the people in front of me continued to drive forward. Otherwise, we would have hit them from behind.
The contact owned a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle started losing motive power. The contact stated there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the vehicle slowed to approximately 10 MPH with black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine connecting rods had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
On May 14, 2023 I was on a trip driving the Tahoe (midnight blue Tahoe in the pictures) about 60 mph, on highway 41 (middle of nowhere, no cell reception) south of kettleman city, CA when, without any warning or symptoms of any problem whatsoever, the engine lost propulsion and died. I was able to coast onto the shoulder and tried starting it. It started again and I continued driving and about 35 minutes later I stopped at a red light on Highway 41 in Lemoore, CA. Again the Tahoe engine died without warning and would not restart. When I tried starting it I could smell a burning smell. The engine cranked but wouldn’t start, and then the check engine light came on. I was at a stoplight on a major highway and was unable to move the vehicle, and was scared to sit in it, so I put on the vehicle hazard lights, got out of the car and ran to the side of the road for safety. Luckily I did not have my children with me. I called 911 and a police officer came and parked behind my vehicle with his lights on so hopefully no other vehicles would hit it. A tow truck was immediately dispatched as high priority by the police. I had it towed to Hedricks Chevrolet dealership in Clovis, California, who informed me there was metal parts in the oil and that the engine was destroyed and had to be replaced. It took several months to get the engine replaced and in the meantime, I bought a new 2023 Cadillac Escalade so I would have a vehicle to drive. The Cadillac Escalade ended up having an extremely similar problem (and I will file a separate report for that vehicle). A few months later when the Tahoe replacement engine was installed I picked up the Tahoe from the dealership and sold it to Carmax.
Driving on freeway and heard loud pop. Moon roof shattered.
My Tahoe was running fine and then when I shut it off and returned 30 minutes later it would not start. I had it towed to a nearby dealership and I was told that several similar incidents have happened with my make and model where the fuel pump control module went bad. A technician replaced the module while it was in the tow truck so it could be unloaded and it started up. I was told that GM is aware of the issue and I have not heard about it and believe there should be a recall to replace these faulty modules.
I was driving the vehicle and it suddenly lost power - going from 55 MPH down to 0 then the engine just stopped. No warning lights went off, no stalling, no engine noise- completely lost power. Would not start after that for 20 minutes. Started after 20 minutes- and ran fine -like nothing happened. Had it towed to dealership where they diagnosed the problem as electrical. Two weeks later still waiting for the part. Dealer says it could be up to 3 months before they could locate the part.
Fuel pump control module diagnosed by the Chevrolet dealer in Iowa City, IA (Billion Chevy). We were on the interstate when the vehicle decelerated rapidly while passing a semi tractor trailer. I was able to control the vehicle and move to the right lane after the semi trailer went by and other cars moved back quickly. No warning light until the incident.
I bought the vehicle (a Chevy Tahoe) brand new in 2021. After 7,000 miles the lifter in the motor broke. The top of the motor had to be rebuilt to accommodate a new lifter. Now, with 24,000 miles on the vehicle, another lifter just broke, so the motor has to be taken apart again. I am certain GM knows about this problem, as (the lifter issue) it is all over the internet, but GM will not issue a recall of the defective lifters. I would be very interested in joining a class action law suit to force GM to recall the defective (lifter) parts. In both instances when the lifters broke, there is no warning! The engine looses power and the vehicle "bucks and shakes". It is just a matter of time before this issues causes sever bodily harm because of this massive engine failure. I have all of the repair documentation.
My tahoe has shut off several times. I am sometimes at a red light and it shuts off and won't turn on or itll eventually turn off but it has a ton of errors on the screen. This has happened about 6 times. Today, April 6th, it wouldn't even start. It has started at the dealership but the screens are blacked out. Also the back hatch is not working as well and it randomly happened. I just purchased this vehicle in September of 2022. And it only has about 40k miles on it. The first time it shut off on me it had less than 40k miles.
water leaking in from the roof area. I heard water above me, then after applying the brakes water came pouring in through the LED lights, seat belts, and other areas mostly on the passenger side of the vehicle. After pulling panels and looking, water was dripping down into the car getting airbags wet, the fuse panel, seat belts are soaked, carpet, and water inside LEDs and dripping on other electronics. Dealership unable to locate leak at this time and is a continuing problem.
On three (3) different occasions, I put the SUV in Park and the car engaged, and the "P" lit up as engaged. As I took my foot off the brake, the SUV went into Drive and rolled. This last time, the SUV did this at my kid's school Ater putting it in Park, I took my foot off the brake and turned to get the kids unbuckled, and my foot accidentally pushed the gas pedal. The SUV went into drive on its own and the SUV drove over the sidewalk hitting a rock staircase causing an accident with all 4 kids in my SUV. This is the 3rd time, and I don't know what to do about it. Thankfully there were no kids in front of the SUV.
Vehicle is displaying service safety restraint system error message which may affect airbag deployment. Dealer advised problem from GM with a harness being too short under seat and seat adjustment can disconnect SRS system which could fail during an accident. Advised no recall but repair parts were not currently available.
