TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN ENGAGING THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL BECAME STUCK WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT IN ORDER TO RELEASE THE PEDAL, SHE PARKED THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSED THE PEDAL CONTINUOUSLY. THE PROBLEM RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
WHEN DRIVING AT SLOW RATES OF SPEED IN A PARKING LOT OR AFTER A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN TURNING IN EITHER DIRECTION, THE STEERING BECOMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. I HAVE TO USE EXTREME STRENGTH TO STEER. PRIOR TO THIS I COULD HEAR KNOCKING EVERY SO OFTEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THE IN AND OUT LOSSES OF POWER STEERING CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2011. I DIDN'T THINK I SHOULD BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM SO SOON. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR
ALMOST CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE MEDIUM. HAD TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND THEN A RIGHT WHEN THE POWER SPEEDING GAVE OUT FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS. THIS HAPPENED WHEN SLOWING DOWN WHILE TURNING. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE BUT TODAY WAS THE LONGEST. I AM AFRAID TO MAKE RIGHT TURNS ONTO 2 WAY ROADS BECAUSE I MAY END UP ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. MY POWERING STEERING FLUID LEVEL IS GOOD AND THERE IS NO NOISE OR OTHER UNUSUAL SOUND WHEN THIS HAPPENS. *TR
OCCASIONAL HARD STEERING/LOSS OF POWER STEERING DURING LOW SPEEDS WHEN MANEUVERING. IN 01/2011 GM REPLACED STEERING GEARBOX DUE TO LEAKING SEALS AS A WARRANTY ITEM. NOW THIS ISSUE HAS COME UP AND THEIR ANSWER IS TO REPLACE THE GEARBOX AGAIN, AND THEY EXPECT ME TO PAY FOR IT NOW THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. HAD AN INDEPENDENT ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC CHECK THIS OUT AND HE SAID HE'S SEEN THE SAME ISSUE 3 TIMES AT HIS SHOP. THEY'VE BEEN REPLACING THE POWER STEERING PUMP. CONTACTED GM CORPORATE CUSTOMER CASE AND NOW IS GOING THRU DISTRICT LEVEL REVIEW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND CAUSED THE CONTACT TO FACE THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS INFORMED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS LEAKING AND THAT THERE WAS METAL CORROSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIRS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.

THE STEERING GETS EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN ON OCCASIONS. POTENTIAL FOR DANGEROUS ACCIDENTS. *TR
I FIRST NOTICED AN OCCASIONAL HARD STEERING INTO PARKING SPACES OR TURNING CORNERS. THE PROBLEM NOW OCCURS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. POWER STEERING FLUID LEVELS HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND NOTED TO BE ADEQUATE. NO LEAKS FROM UNDER THE HOOD EXIST. THE DIFFICULT STEERING, AND I MEAN ABSOLUTE LOSS OF CONTROL OF MY STEERING HAPPENS AT LOW SPEEDS, FROM A COMPLETE STOP TO LESS THAN 20 MPH, AS WHEN PULLING INTO PARKING SPACES OR MANEUVERING AROUND STREET CORNERS, CURBS, OR MEDIANS. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THE LOSS OF CONTROL WHEN DECELERATING AROUND HIGHWAY ON/OFF-RAMPS WHEN MY SPEED NEARS 30 OR LESS MPH. THE STEERING BECOMES WORSE THAN "MANUAL" STEERING AND REQUIRES ABSOLUTE FORCE/MAN-HANDLING OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO COMPLETE THE INTENDED TASK, THEN AS RAPIDLY AS THE STEERING WENT OUT, IT COMES BACK AGAIN WHEN I LEAST EXPECT IT, CAUSING OVER-STEERING THROUGH MY MANEUVER. MY HUSBAND ALSO HAS DIFFICULTY MANEUVERING THE VEHICLE WHEN IT CONVERTS TO "MANUAL" STEERING. THE PROBLEM IS SO INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. I HAVE RAN INTO CURBS AND MEDIANS, THANKFULLY NOT A PEDESTRIAN OR FELLOW DRIVER'S CAR. MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES, EVEN AFTER COSTLY REPLACEMENT/REPAIRS OF POWER STEERING PUMPS AND STEERING RACK AND PINIONS, LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS DEFECT WITH MY STEERING SYSTEM AND GM NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY! IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE FATALITIES BEGIN TO OCCUR FROM THIS PROBLEM. *TR
BOUGHT A 2010 TRAVERSE 2 WEEKS AGO. ONLY 14,145 MILES, HAD THE STEERING PUMP AND RACK AND PINION CHANGED ALREADY. STILL MAKING WEIRD NOISE. SURELY THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL, IS GM WAITING FOR FATALITIES FIRST? *TR
STEERING HAS BECOME DIFFICULT. RECENTLY BECOMING HARDER TO TURN. VEHICLE IS GARAGE KEPT AND NOTICED A PINK PUDDLE OF FLUID. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE THE POWER STEERING FLUID. WE TOOK TO A MECHANIC FRIEND WHO PUT VEHICLE UP ON A RACK. HE ADVISED THAT THE RACK AND PINION NEED TO BE REPLACED. I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE NOW. HE SAYS IT WILL COST $1200 TO FIX. WE DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY. CHEVY NEEDS TO PUT A RECALL ON THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. I LOVE LOVE MY TRAVERSE BUT AM AFRAID TO DRIVE WITH MY CHILDREN OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER. WHEN MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN STEERING LOCKS UP OCCASIONALLY . IF YOU MAKE A SHARP LEFT OR RIGHT TURN ITS AS IF YOU HAVE NO POWER STEERING. POWER STEERING RESERVOIR FLUID IS AT APPROPRIATE LEVEL. IN MY RESEARCH OF THIS PROBLEM, ITS WIDE SPREAD. INTERNET FORUMS HAVE MUCH DISCUSSION ON THIS PROBLEM. ITS A SAFETY ISSUE, WHEN THE STEERING LOCKS UP AND IS TOO HARD TO TURN THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT IS GREAT. *TR
DURING SLOW SPEED TURNS (~20 MPH), AS WHEN TURNING IN A PARKING LOT TO PARK THE VEHICLE OR TURN INTO A DRIVEWAY, THERE IS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTINUE TURNING THE VEHICLE. WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED HAPPENING MONTHS AGO IT WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM FOR PART OF THE TURN AND ONLY WHEN YOU TURNED TO THE LEFT. NOW IT IS HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND FOR LONGER DURATIONS OF TIME AS WELL AS WHEN YOU TURN TO THE RIGHT. HAD TO STOP, BACKUP AND RETRY PARKING THE VEHICLE A FEW TIMES. POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL IS FINE. NO FLUID LEAKAGE THAT I'VE NOTICED. EXTREMELY CONCERNED THIS MAY START HAPPENING AT HIGHER SPEEDS / HIGHWAY / EXPRESSWAY DRIVING. LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN THIS VEHICLE NOW FOR LONG TRIPS. *TR
THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED IN LATE MAY. WHEN TURNING A CORNER THE STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN, AND WAS EVEN MORE DIFFICULT TO RETURN. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER IN JUNE. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR ELEVEN HOURS THAT DAY AND PERFORMED SOME ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, BUT WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. AS WE CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, THE ISSUE BECAME MORE DANGEROUS. THE STEERING WAS BECOMING MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO RETURN TO THE STRAIGHT POSITION. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AUG 13. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS FAILING UNDER LOAD, AND REPLACED IT. *TR
WHEN I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF, RADIO STAYS ON. I KEEP OPENING AND SHUTTING THE DOOR WITH NO SUCCESS. HAVE TO START IT AND TURN IT OFF TO EVENTUALLY GET IT TO TURN OFF. BACK UP ALARM SOMETIMES KEEPS BEEPING, EVEN AFTER I TAKE IT OUT OF REVERSE. HAVE TO TURN VEHICLE OFF THAN BACK ON TO STOP IT. *TR
MY CAR ENGINE CONTINUES TO RUN WHILE THE KEY IS OUT OF THE IGNITION. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, I HAVE TO PUT THE KEY IN AND TRY TURNING THE IGNITION OFF SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE ENGINE WILL ACTUALLY SHUT DOWN, AFTER EACH INCIDENT THIS DRAINS MY BATTERY AND THEN MY CAR REQUIRES TO BE JUMPED IT ALSO HAS TAKES SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO GET THE CAR RUNNING AGAIN AND SOMETIMES AFTER THIS HAPPENS IT PUTS MY CAR IN "LIMP" MODE MEANING THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR WHILE DRIVING IT. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE CHEVY DEALER (BOB STEELE IN COCOA FL) EXPLAINED TO THEM THE ISSUES AND TOLD THEM I HAVE GOOGLED THE ISSUES AS WELL AND THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING WHILE THE KEY IS IN THEIR HAND AND CHEVY STATED THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE. THE DEALER CALLED AND STATED THAT IT WOULD COST ME $200.00 TO REPLACE MY IGNITION IN MY CAR WHICH I DID AND THAT WOULD FIX THE ENGINE RUNNING ISSUE AND WOULD FIX THE "LIMP" MODE ISSUE. THE REPAIR LASTED A WEEK AND THEN I STOPPED TO GET GAS AND THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF AGAIN AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF TURNING THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION IT FINALLY SHUT DOWN, AFTER GETTING GAS IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS FOR THE CAR TO TURN BACK ON ( AT THIS TIME IT DID NOT GO INTO "LIMP" MODE) I TOOK THE CAR DIRECTLY BACK TO THE DEALER WHO HAS HAD THE CAR FOR FOUR DAYS NOW. I JUST RECIEVED A CALL FROM THE CHEVY DEALER STATING IT WOULD NOW COST ME $1200.00 TO REPAIR THE FUSE BOX AND WIRING THAT HAS SOME HOW BECOME WET IN MY GLOVE COMPARTMENT.. AGAIN I STATED THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT THEY HAVE WATER IN THEIR FUSE BOX (WHICH I ASSUME SHOULD OF BEEN SEALED PROPERLY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING)SO I AM NOW DRIVING A CAR THAT REFUSES TO SHUT OFF OR CAN PUT ITSELF INTO "LIMP" MODE AFFECTING THE DRIVING ABILITY OF THE CAR. *TR
POWER STEERING FAILS WITHOUT WARNING WHEN MAKING TURNS, PARTICULARLY AT LOW SPEEDS. THEN AS QUICKLY AS IT FAILS, IT WILL RETURN AGAIN. THE CAR NOW HAS 120,000 MILES ON IT, BUT THIS ISSUE STARTED WHEN IT ONLY HAD 50,000 MILES ON IT, AND WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTEE. 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICS INCLUDING THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE SAID THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AS THE POWER STEERING PUMP IS WORKING PROPERLY AND THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR IS PROPERLY FILLED. THE DEALER ACTUALLY TOLD US 'IT'S JUST TIME FOR A NEW CAR GUYS.' WE HAVE SPOKEN IN PERSON TO TWO OTHER OWNERS OF TRAVERSES AND THEY DESCRIBE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
HAVING HARD STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS! HAVE READ MANY THREADS ABOUT THIS! ALSO HAVE HAD OIL BEING SUCKED UP INTO ENGINE INTAKE AND BURNED INTO ENGINE CAUSING PREMATURE CONVERTER AND O2 SENSOR FAILURE! ALSO HAVE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FOR P0008 DUE TO CRANKSHAFT RELUCTOR MOVING? *TR
THE ISSUE WAS FIRST OBSERVED WHEN INITIATING A 90 DEGREE RIGHT HAND TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE AT APPROXIMATELY 10MPH. THE WHEEL DID NOT RESPOND TO THE TURN AND FELT AS IF IT WAS BEING GRABBED OR PINCHED, THE ONLY DRIVER OPTION WAS TO IMMEDIATELY APPLY THE BRAKES. THE WHEEL THEN HAD TO BE MUSCLED IN ORDER TO TURN THE VEHICLE. SINCE THAT INSTANCE, THIS ISSUE HAS INCREASED IN FREQUENCY AND HAS BECOME A DAILY OCCURRENCE. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN OBSERVED BY ALL THREE REGULAR DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLE. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THE VEHICLE MUST BE REVERSED TO RE-INITIATE THE TURN SO AS NOT TO HIT OTHER VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS. ADDITIONALLY, IT WAS INDEPENDENTLY OBSERVED BY OUR MECHANIC WHEN TAKING THE VEHICLE FOR A TEST DRIVE AFTER PERFORMING UNRELATED WORK ON THE VEHICLE. A RELATED ISSUE OBSERVED INCLUDES A SENSATION OF PINCHING OR BINDING OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN INITIATING A TURN AT LOW SPEED; AFTER EXPERIENCING THIS BRIEF SENSATION THE WHEEL THEN TURNS WITHOUT ISSUE. THE DANGEROUS ASPECT OF THIS ISSUE IS THAT THE DRIVER IS NOT CERTAIN THAT THE WHEEL IS ACTUALLY GOING TO TURN. HOWEVER THE DRIVER CANNOT JUST APPLY THE BRAKES AS THAT MAY RESULT IN GETTING REAR ENDED AND AT THE SAME TIME IS APPREHENSIVE ABOUT MUSCLING THE WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS JUST BROUGHT IN FOR INSPECTION OF THE STEERING ISSUES BY OUR CERTIFIED CHEVROLET SERVICE CENTER. THEIR DIAGNOSIS INDICATED THAT THE STEERING RACK REQUIRES REPLACEMENT AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $1600 AND NEEDS TWO (2) DAYS IN THE SHOP. THEY INDICATED IT WAS NOT A DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY ITEM. CURRENT MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE IS APPROXIMATELY 80,000 MILES. *TR
STRAYED HEARING A HUMMING NOISE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN THAT CHANGED AS ACCELERATION CHANGED, THEN STARTED HAVING TROUBLE STEERING IN A TURN AT SLOW SPEEDS, COULD FEEL A TIGHTNESS IN THE STEERING COLUMN. TOOK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED IT IS A LEAK IN THE RACK & PINION APPARATUS AND WILL COST $1900 TO REPAIR. THEY REPORTED THAT IT IS COMMONLY NEEDED AT 60-80,000 MILES (MY VEHICLE HAS 70,000). I AM HOPING THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM BUT AFTER READING OTHERS COMPLAINTS, I AM WORRIED IT WILL STILL BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I DO FEEL GM SHOULD RESPOND TO THESE COMMON ISSUES AND REPAIR THEIR FAULTY VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR
AT LOW SPEED OR WHILE TRY TO PARK VEHICLE WOULD LOSE POWER STEERING IN VEHICLE. CHANGED THE POWER STEERING FLUID PROBLEM REMAINED. HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE GM DEALER TOLD THE STEERING GEAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR CHEVROLET TRAVERSE IN A PARKING LOT. WHEN SHE TRIED TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT AND SHE WAS BARELY ABLE TO AVOID HITTING A PARKED CAR. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPEATED OVER THE WEEKEND DURING A TRIP TO TENNESSEE WHERE I HAD TO FORCE THE STEERING WHEEL TO TURN IN A GAS STATION LOT. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WIDESPREAD BASED ON MY LIMITED RESEARCH. *TR
NOTCHY FEEL TO STEERING AT LOWER SPEEDS...1-40MPH. DEALER STATES THAT CAR NEEDS NEW POWER STEERING PUMP. LOOKING AT THE COMPLAINTS ALREADY LOGGED THIS IS AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM. *TR
MY WIFE STOPPED AT STOP SIGN AND TRY TO TURN TO THE STREET BUT THE STEERING BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN AND THE COMPLETELY LOST OF POWER. SHE OFF/ON RIGHT AWAY BUT IT WAS ABLE TO MOVE. SECOND TIME OFF/ON AFTER WAITING FOR A MINUTES WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR. I HAVE CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AND GM (866-790-5700) ABOUT THE PROBLEM. *TR
NEARLY RAN INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE AS THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS BEING TURNED AT LOW SPEEDS. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER YOU ARE TRAVELING FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR OVER 3 MONTHS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY GM AS A RECALL SITUATION. *TR
CURRENTLY AT LOW SPEEDS TRYING TO MANUEVER IN TRAFFIC, PARKING, ETC., THERE IS COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. STEERING IS NOT RETURNED WITH INCREASED ENGINE RPM. BECAUSE OF THE CONECTION OF RACK AND PINION AND ACTUAL MANUAL STEERING IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. GENERAL MOTORS DECLINES TO RECOGNIZE THERE IS AN ISSUE. DEALER SHIP DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF A PROBLEM BUT A MECHANIC TOLD THE CS REP THAT SOME PEOPLE WERE HAVING SUCCESS WITH INCREASED ENGINE RPM. HMMMM STRANGE IF THEY NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE INJURED OR KILLED? I READ ON THE INTERNET OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM MANY PEOPLE. IT WAS SUGGESTED THER COULD BE LOW POWER STEERING FLUID. THIS WAS NOT TRUE BUT FLUID WAS TOPPED OFF. *TR

AT SLOW SPEEDS (UNDER 25 MPH) POWER STEERING FAILS MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. NO ACCIDENTS YET, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS CLOSE CALLS ENTERING DRIVEWAYS OR MAKING TURNS AT INTERSECTIONS WHERE I COULD NOT STEER TIGHTLY WHEN THE POWER ASSISTS GOES OUT - BARELY MISSING OTHER VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS. REPAIR SHOP STATED THAT FLUID LEVELS ARE FINE, THE PUMP IS WORKING, AND THERE ARE NO LEAKS IN THE SYSTEM. DEALER SERVICE STATED THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS. NOW THAT I HAVE OVER 100,000 MILES I AM BEING TOLD I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL REPAIR COSTS. *JS
I PURCHASED MY GM VEHICLE FROM A DEALERSHIP IN SOUTH BURLINGTON, VERMONT, IN SEPTEMBER 2010. I HAVE DRIVEN IT FOR JUST THREE AND A HALF YEARS WITH JUST 55,000 MILES ON IT, AND NOW AFTER A ROUTINE SERVICE VISIT (LUBE OIL AND FILTER, TRANSMISSION FLUID, AIR FILTER, AND WINTER TIRE CHANGE) I AM NOW BEING TOLD THAT THE STEERING RACK AND FRONT STRUTS ARE LEAKING AND WILL COST $2,262 TO REPAIR. ABSURD. I WAS TOLD THAT IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE AND MUST BE DONE BECAUSE MY CAR WILL NOW NOT PASS INSPECTION. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO SPEND THAT MUCH MONEY ON A CAR REPAIR, MUCH LESS A CAR THAT IS RELATIVELY NEW WITH SO FEW MILES ON IT. IN ADDITION, ON A SIDE NOTE, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW ON AFTER THE DEALERSHIP COMPLETED THE AIR BAG RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I WERE SO SHOCKED AT THE STEERING RACK AND STRUT QUOTE, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND HAVE NOW DISCOVERED IT'S A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THESE VEHICLES, AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OUT OF CALIFORNIA. GENERAL MOTORS HAS ALLEGEDLY BEEN AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND CONTINUES TO SELL THE VEHICLE. I HAVE FOUR CHILDREN IN MY CAR, AND ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT MY CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL I NEED IT INSPECTED IN AUGUST, AFTER ALL I HAVE RESEARCHED, I AM AFRAID MY STEERING WILL GIVE OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. RECEIVED SPECIAL COVERAGE LETTER FROM CHEVROLET DATED SEPT 2014 'RE: #14329 @ POWER STEERING PUMP WITH EXTENSION OF WARRANTY COVERAGE. TOOK VEHICLE TO CHEV DEALERSHIP FOR TWO RECALLS (14030 & 14187) AND CHECK POWER STEERING...RECALLS HANDLED, POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED AND INSTALLED NEW GEAR HOUSING KIT. ONE MONTH LATER TOOK BACK FOR STATE INSPECTION, FAILED BECAUSE NOW POWER STEERING RACK LEAKING ON BOTH SIDES!!?! AFTER READING SEVERAL OTHER SIMILAR ACCOUNTS, I AM CONVINCED THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK ISSUES ARE CONTINGENT ON THE OTHER...ALSO HEFTY AMOUNT FOR REPAIR $1500-1900; WHICH I AM ALSO VERY CONCERNED MAY JUST BE A TEMPORARY FIX!! AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FOR PASSENGER AIR BAG CAME ON. WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER. THEY COMPLETED THE REQUIRED REPAIR FOR UNDER THE RECALL BUT THAT DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. DEALER ADVISED OF ADDITIONAL FEES TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. WE CONTACTED GM AND RECEIVED AUTHORIZATION FOR THE DEALER TO CONDUCT A DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. THE RESULT CONCLUDED THE "SDM" HAD FAILED. THE DEALER COULD NOT TELL US IF THE RECALLED CONNECTOR COULD HAVE CAUSED THE FAILURE. WE WERE REQUIRED TOP PAY $300 TO FIX THIS SAFETY ISSUE THAT WE FEEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. ESSENTIALLY, TO MAKE THE VEHICLE SAFE TO OPERATE AND CORRECT A PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BY RECALL IT COST US $300. *TR

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO MY EARLIER COMPLAINT OF INTERMITTENT SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING MAKING TURNS AT LOW SPEEDS. I WAS ABLE TO RELIABLY RECREATE THE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE: FINDING AN EMPTY LOT, TURN VEHICLE AND HOLD AT SLOW SPEED (UNDER 10MPH) AND CONTINUE IN COMPLETE CIRCLES. EVENTUALLY, POWER ASSIST WILL KICK OFF AND MAKING ANY TURNS WILL REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT EFFORT. BRINGING THE VEHICLE TO HIGHER SPEEDS (25-35 MPH) APPEARS TO RESET. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN SHOP FOR REPLACEMENT OF POWER STEERING PUMP AS THIS WAS THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT'S DIAGNOSIS EVEN THOUGH I INFORMED THEM OF THE ABILITY TO INDUCE VEHICLE AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. ON SUNDAY I NOTICED A REDDISH FLUID UNDER THE FRONT RIGHT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE THAT HAD LEAKED OUT ONTO THE GARAGE FLOOR. ON THURSDAY I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND HAVE THE WATER PUMP RECALL TAKEN CARE OF AND HAD MENTIONED TO THE SERVICE TECH ABOUT THE FLUID I HAD NOTICED. THE SERVICE TECH CALLED ME LATER THAT DAY TO INFORM ME THAT THE MECHANIC HAD FOUND THAT THE FLUID WAS COMING FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND THAT THE RACK AND PINION HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1400.00. THE VEHICLE IS JUST OVER 4 YEARS OLD AND TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM IS UNACCEPTABLE. IN DOING RESEARCH INTO POWER STEERING FAILURE ON THIS PARTICULAR CHEVROLET VEHICLE, THERE ARE NUMEROUS CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE RELATED TO THE POWER STEERING COMPONENTS. THE SERVICE TECH SAID THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM, A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED TO HAVE GM REPLACE THE POWER STEERING COMPONENTS BEFORE THERE ARE MAJOR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS. WHILE DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT I HEARD HIGH PITCHED SQUEALING FROM STEERING. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I COULD NOT TURN TO LEFT OR RIGHT. LUCKILY PARKING LOT WAS NOT TO CROWDED AND I WAS ABLE TO PARK. ONCE IN PARK I TRIED TO SHUT OFF VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION. AFTER MINUTES OF MESSING WITH IT I FINALLY GOT THE KEY OUT. SINCE THEN I STILL HEAR SQUEALING AND STEERING IS DIFFERENT. I NOTICED MY CAR WAS LEAKING SOMETHING AND TOLD MY HUSBAND WHO TOOK MY CAR TO DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID I NEED A NEW GEAR BOX. I DON'T EVEN HAVE 27000 MILES ON MY TRAVERSE AND HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE O2 SENSORS NOW THIS. I REALLY LIKED THIS CAR BUT I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO BE PAYING FOR THIS LEMON!!! I BOUGHT THIS TRAVERSE IN MAY OF 2013. WE HAVE BEEN HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING OFF AND ON FOR OVER A YEAR. THE SUV ONLY HAD 58000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE BOUGHT IT. WE JUST DEALT WITH IT, BECAUSE WE EITHER DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR THE MONEY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,470.
THE TRAVERSE HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING, AS IN IT DOES NOT TURN(AT ALL) AT LOW SPEEDS. THE POWER STEERING WILL NOT WORK 90% OF THE TIME WHEN TURNING AT 10MPH OR LOWER. GETTING OUT OF A PARKING PLACE IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ONLY PULL OUT ONE WAY. THE SCARIEST INSTANCE FOR US WAS WHEN WE TRIED TO PULL INTO A TURN LANE ACROSS A FIVE LANE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR WOULDN'T TURN TO STRAIGHTEN UP IN THE TURN LANE. LUCKILY THE OTHER DRIVERS STOPPED BUT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT HAD THEY NOT. WE HAVE TAKEN IT IN BEFORE TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND NOTHING WAS FOUND.
