THIS VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING - INTERMITTENTLY. THERE IS SOME TIMES A LURCHING THAT HAPPENS AS THOUGH IT'S NOT GETTING GAS AND THE RPM'S STRUGGLE AND THEN IT WILL DIE. POP IT INTO NEUTRAL, TURN THE KEY AND IT STARTS RIGHT BACK. MOST OFTEN THIS HAPPENS WITHIN 10MINS OF DRIVING AND AT SPEEDS ANYWHERE FROM 10-35 - USUALLY WHEN THE RPM'S SETTLING TO AROUND 1200-1800. IT HAS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND IT HAS HAPPENED 45MINS INTO A DRIVE WITH NO LURCHING INDICATION AT ALL. WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN, THE DRIVER LOSES ALL POWER STEERING/BRAKES WHICH MAKES FOR VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE DEALER SWAPPED OUT THE IGNITION UNDER RECALL IN JUNE 2015 - THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER HAS TAKEN THE CAR ON SEVERAL DRIVES AND HAS NOT BEEN ALBE TO EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM. SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS 2-3 TIMES IN ONE DRIVE, SOMETIMES 2-3 TIMES IN ONE DAY FOR SEVERAL DAYS IN A ROW AND THEN IT MIGHT NOT DO IT AGAIN FOR DAYS OR EVEN WEEKS. THE KEY IS ALWAYS IN THE ON POSITION - IT NEVER MOVED TO ACC OR ANY OTHER POSITION - AND THIS ALMOST ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS SETTLING INTO THE RPM - MEANING NOT WHILE ACCELERATING. SOMETIMES THIS WILL TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, SOMETIMES IT DOES NOT. SOMETIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON JUST BEFORE IT DIES, AND OTHER TIMES IT DOES NOT. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO RHYME OR REASON FOR WHY THIS HAPPENS BUT IT HAPPENS OFTEN AND AGAIN, IS VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE.

2010 CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. TRANSPORTING CHILDREN. BOUGHT USED WITH 42,819 MILES. TOOK TO SHOP SEPT AND OCT FROM WHERE PURCHASED DUE TO SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING. THEY COULD NOT FIND PROBLEM. TOOK TO CHRYSLER DEALER DECEMBER 2014 AND AGAIN MARCH 2015 - AGAIN, CAN'T FIND PROBLEM. DANGEROUS. HAVE TO QUICKLY PULL OFF ROAD - IT SHUTS OFF, STEERING COLUMN FREEZES. CALLED CHRYSLER FOR HELP, WANT MORE MONEY TO CHECK CAR AGAIN. NO GUARANTEE THEY CAN FIX. RECALL FOR IGNITION PROBLEM ON CARS OF THIS SERIES RAN FROM AUGUST 3, 2009 TO JUNE 17, 2010. THIS VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED JUNE 30, 2010. I'M JUST AMAZED THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. FAMILY IS AT RISK IN THE VEHICLE NOT TO MENTION AND OTHER CARS AND OR PEDESTRIANS NEARBY WHEN IT SHUTS OFF. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. I'M EXPECTED TO DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN. THEY SHOULD REALLY PAY FOR THE TOW AS IT'S NOT A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD I NOTICED WHAT SMELT LIKE BURNING SUGAR. WHILE SLOWING DOWN I SAW WHAT LOOKED LIKE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CHECKING THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE (WHICH WAS NORMAL) I OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW COOLANT ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, EVEN ON THE HOOD MATTING. AFTER FURTHER DIAGNOSING THE ISSUE I DETERMINED IT IS THE Y FITTING ON THE HEATER HOSE LEADING TO THE FIREWALL HAS A CRACK AT THE PARTING LINE. THE COMBINATION OF PRESSURE AND HEAT IN THE LINES CAUSED THE FLUID TO SPRAY OUT AND THUS THE BURNIGN SMELL. THIS PART IS A FLAW AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH SOMETHING THAT IS NOT PLASTIC AND FUSED TOGETHER. REPLACING WITH THE OEM PART WILL ONLY CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN, I CAN NOT RISK THIS WITH IT BEING THE FAMILY CAR AND HAVING 4 CHILDREN IN IT. GETTING BROKEN DOWN DUE TO POOR DESIGN IS UNSATISFACTORY, AND THIS COULD LEAD TO COSTLY REPAIRS OF THE COOLANT ALL LEASKS OUT.

THE MECHANIC INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND RECOMMENDED AN IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT OF THE BEARING. HE INDICATED THAT A COMPLETE FAILURE COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER OR IN THE BEARING SEIZING, WHICH WOULD LOCK THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. WE ORDERED A NEW SHAFT/BEARING ASSEMBLY IN EARLY JUNE. THIS ASSEMBLY WAS ON BACK ORDER IN JUNE, AND HAS STILL NOT ARRIVED. PROMISED DELIVERY DATES HAVE COME AND GONE. THE MOST RECENT PROMISE DATE IS MID-SEPTEMBER. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MORE THAN 140 SHAFTS ARE ON BACK ORDER. THIS VEHICLE IS OUR PRIMARY SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION, AND THE LONGER THE DELAY, THE GREATER OUR CONCERN OF A CATASTROPHIC EVENT.
