2004 DODGE DURANGO LIMITED, 5.7L HEMI, PURCHASED ON 5/15/13. EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED WITH VEHICLE AT TIME OF SALE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN RETURNED FOR SERVICE FIVE TIMES TO DATE FOR SAME ROOT ISSUE. IN UNDER ONE YEAR, ONLY APPROXIMATELY 2600 MILES HAVE BEEN DRIVEN DUE TO LACK OF RELIABILITY AND SERVICE RELATED PROBLEMS. IN THIS CASE, THE ROOT PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND IS NOT UNIQUE TO THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE, BUT RATHER A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. CHRYSLER IS UNABLE TO PROVIDE DIRECTION OR ANY TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO ASSIST THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH SOLVING THE ISSUE. IT HAS BEEN CLEARLY ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AS WELL AS CHRYSLER DIRECTLY, THAT THIS MATTER INVOLVES A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED AND WAS NEVER ISSUED AS A RECALL. MOST RECENTLY, I WAS NOTIFIED THAT ENGINE DAMAGE HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. IN THE SAME CONVERSATION, HOWEVER, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE DAMAGE, BEING THE DEFECT THAT ALLOWS WATER TO ENTER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT DURING HEAVY RAIN OR CAR WASHES, WAS NOT RECTIFIED. THIS ISSUE IS CLEARLY UNRESOLVED AND THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND OTHER MOTORISTS COULD BE IN JEOPARDY IF CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WERE TO OCCUR. CHRYSLER HAS OPTED TO IGNORE THIS FREQUENTLY REPORTED ISSUE AND SIMPLY PUSH THOSE WHO COMPLAIN AWAY. *TR
I TURNED THE KEY TO START THE DURANGO AND IT ACTED LIKE IT HAD A LOW BATTERY. I TRIED AGAIN AND IT STARTED, BUT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO KNOCK BADLY. I HAVE IT NOW AT THE MECHANIC AND BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE WILL NEED NEW MOTOR. I CAN PROVIDE MORE INFO LATER. I FOUND ON THE NET OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME TYPE PROBLEM AND THOUGHT I WOULD REPORT THIS. I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS CAR ABOUT A MONTH AGO. I HAVE DRIVEN IT WITH NO PROBLEMS AND NO NOISES IN THE ENGINE. MY SON, WHO IS A MECHANIC, SAYS IT SOUND FREAKISH FOR I HAD NO WARNING SIGNS. HE IS HIGH ON THE 5.7 ENGINE. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED ANYONE FOR I KNOW THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I BOUGHT IT AS IS, BUT DO NOT FEEL THE DEALER UNLOADED ON ME. THE DURANGO SEEMED FINE UNTIL THAT POINT. I TOO, MIGHT SHOULD ADD THAT DURING THE WEEK, WE HAD RECEIVED ABOUT THREE INCHES OF RAIN, AND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THIS MIGHT BE A FACTOR AS IT LOOKS LIKE THERE HAD BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL WITH A COWEL THAT WAS NOT DOING ITS JOB. *TR
WENT TO A DRIVE-THROUGH CAR WASH ... WHILE CAR WAS RINSING - LOTS OF WATER - THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE STARTED IDLING ROUGHLY. I GOT OUT OF THE WASH AND GOT ON TO THE HIGHWAY WITH THE ENGINE STILL CUTTING OUT SPORADICALLY. I DROVE ABOUT A MILE AND THE ENGINE SMOOTHED OUT, BUT THEN I HEARD A WARNING BELL AND NOTED THAT MY ENGINE TEMP HAD SHOT UP. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER. ENGINE COOLANT WAS EVERYWHERE. I REFILLED WITH NEW COOLANT AND WATER AND STARTED THE ENGINE ... DROVE ABOUT ANOTHER MILE AND THE "HOT ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT. CALLED FOR A WRECKER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED IN. DIAGNOSED AS A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. $6000 FOR ANOTHER ENGINE. I HAVE SEEN ON OTHER DODGE FORUMS WHERE THESE ENGINES HAVE FAILED AFTER DRIVING IN THE RAIN, OR HAVING DRIVEN THROUGH STANDING WATER. I SIMPLY WENT THROUGH A CAR WASH. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM (WATER INTRUSION IN THE ENGINE DUE TO A POORLY DESIGNED ENGINE COWLING) ON THE 2004 HEMI - ACCORDING TO LOCAL DODGE DEALER. *TR
ENGINE CONNECTING ROD FAILURE ON WELL MAINTAINED ENGINE DURING STARTING UP IN THE MORNING. RAIN OCCURRED DURING MOST OF THE NIGHT. *TR
IT STARTED WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS JUST AN EGR PROBLEM ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, AND I REPLACED IT. IT KEPT DYING, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS RAINING PRETTY GOOD, AND I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS GETTING WET. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE STARTER OR BATTERY, AND REPLACED THE BATTERY. A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE LAST INCIDENT, IT DIDN'T WANT TO START AGAIN, SO I THOUGHT I GUESSED WRONG AND WAS GOING TO REPLACE THE STARTER. MAY 3, 2013, ON THE WAY TO WORK, IT STARTED RUNNING REAL ROUGH, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING. IT WAS RAINING VERY HARD. I PULLED OVER, AND SMELLED BURNED OIL, AND THEN SAW A MULTICOLORED SHEEN ON THE WET, RAINY PAVEMENT. THE ENGINE DIED BEFORE I GOT THE HOOD UP. I CAN START IT, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE IS INSIDE WITH A HAMMER. THE GUY THAT TOWED IT SAID IT THREW A ROD OUT THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE ENGINE, BY THE MOTOR MOUNT. IT STARTS, BUT SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE IS INSIDE THE ENGINE WITH A HAMMER. FROM WHAT IT SOUNDS, THE ROD BROKE, AND WENT THROUGH THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE. WITH ALMOST 700 COMPLAINTS, SOMETHING SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE DONE. I OWE ALMOST $8000 ON THIS CAR, AND IT WILL COST AT LEAST HALF OF THAT TO FIX IT. IT ISN'T WORTH ANYTHING THE WAY IT IS, AND IT COSTS MORE TO FIX IT THAN IT IS PROBABLY WORTH. A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH BRINGS UP ALL OF THESE SAME SYMPTOMS FOR THIS 5.7L HEMI ENGINE, WITHOUT EVEN MENTIONING THE ISSUES. THERE ARE THAT MANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN YOU LOSE ALL POWER STEERING, BRAKES, AND POUR OUT OIL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN THE RAIN? PLEASE DO SOMETHING. THANK YOU. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 DODGE DURANGO SOMETIME LAST WEEK THERE WAS A HEAVY RAIN, I WENT OUT TO START MY TRUCK AND IT WOULD NOT START. LATER THAT DAY IT STARTED BUT THERE WAS A LOUD HORRIBLE NOISE.. I FOUND OUT TODAY THE MOTOR IS GONE. THIS HAPPENED BEFORE WHEN IT RAINED IT DIDN'T START FOR A WHILE AND THEN STARTED LATER. THE ENGINE IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND SEEMS LIFE WHEN THERE IS HEAVY RAIN THE TRUCK STALLS NOW IT'S COMPLETELY GONE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE EMANATING FROM THE ENGINE THAT SOUNDED LIKE ROCKS WERE UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160,000.
LOUD NOISE EMANATES FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUCK FOLLOWED BY SMOKE. ENGINE GOES DEAD. TRIED RESTARTING, BUT TO NO AVAIL. TOWED VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT A PISTON CAME OFF AND BLEW A WHOLE IN THE ENGINE. AS A RESULTS, A WHOLE NEW ENGINE IS REQUIRED. ENGINE HAD NO SLUDGE WHATSOEVER AND WELL MAINTAINED. I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE, THE REPAIR REP CALLED TO TELL ME THAT THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING/TICKING SOUND WHEN HE STARTED THE ENGINE. I DROPPED THE VEHICLE OFF THE NIGHT BEFORE AND THERE WAS NO KNOCKING OR TICKING SOUND. AFTER CONTACTING MY WARRANTY COMPANY AND GIVEN THE REPAIR SHOP PERMISSION TO BREAK DOWN THE VEHICLE OVER THE PAST 3 WEEKS THAT MY TRUCK HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP, THEY NOW ARE TELLING ME THAT THE PISTON/ROD IS BROKE AND IS LYING IN THE OIL PAN. I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM OCCURRING WITH DODGE DURANGO'S. WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN AN INVESTIGATION DONE AND RECALLS ON THIS MATTER? IT CAN'T BE A COINCIDENCE THAT A WIDE SPREAD OF DURANGO OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM, WHICH IS RESULTING IN SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS AND ENGINE REPLACEMENT AT THE CUSTOMERS EXPENSE BECAUSE THESE WARRANTY COMPANIES ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF COVERING LITTLE OR NOTHING OF THE COST IN REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENT. *TR
FIRST THING IS WHEN IT RAIN THE SUV STALL AND CUTS OFF. THE TOP PART OF THE ROOF ON THE INSIDE GETS WET ALSO MY SEATBELTS. THEN THE SECOND THING IS THE ENGINE WHICH THREW A ROD AT 149000 MILES. THE ONLY ONE THAT WORK ON THIS VEHICLE WAS THE DODGE DEALERSHIP. AND I JUST HAD MY OIL CHANGE A MONTH BEFORE WITH THERE 23 POINT INSPECTION. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS WATER PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT'S WHY THESE MODELS ARE BLOWING ENGINES AT LOW MILES. SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN 2005, THE GLASS ON BACK HATCH SHATTERED 6 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT IT, THE ELECTRONIC PANEL WENT OUT, THE MAP SENSOR, IDLER PULLEYS (CAR WAS TWO YEARS OLD), CAR STALLS IN HEAVY RAIN/AT CAR WASH ALWAYS- HAVE HAD IT TOWED, EXHAUST MANIFOLDS BEEN WORKED ON, WATER PUMP, RADIATOR, HEATER CORE, INTAKE VALVE SPRING, RUST BUBBLES ON PAINT CAR WAS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. YESTERDAY, WHILE DRIVING MY CHILDREN TO ACTIVITIES, CAR MADE TICKING SOUND & SOUNDED FUNNY PRESSING ON THE GAS & SITTING AT LIGHT- I IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO MUFFLER MAN THINKING IT WAS THE MUFFLER. TO MY SURPRISE, I WAS TOLD LIFTERS COLLAPSED AND NEED TWO SETS OF LIFTERS/ HEAD GASKETS, WHOLE ENGINE HAS TO BE TAKEN APART, COST IS $1,500.00. I THOUGHT A HEMI ENGINE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A MONEY PIT SINCE I BOUGHT IT AND FOR EVERYONE ELSE TOO AFTER THE COMMENTS I HAVE READ. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A DODGE VEHICLE AGAIN. TOO MANY THINGS HAVE REPLACED ON THIS CAR I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU, IT IS IN PREVIOUS LETTERS SENT TO CHRYSLER-AND IT ISN'T JUST ME. I MAINTAINED THIS VEHICLE, GOT REGULAR OIL CHANGES, ETC. AND IT BACKFIRED ON ME. I REALIZE IT IS 10 YEARS OLD AND WE PUT A LOT OF HIGHWAY MILES ON THE CAR TAKING FAMILY VACATIONS AND EVERY FAMILY VACATION, THERE HAS BEEN A CAR PROBLEM. I PUT SO MUCH MONEY INTO THIS CAR, I CAN'T SAVE UP ENOUGH TO GET ANYTHING NEW. I KNOW FAMILY MEMBERS THAT HAVE CARS 10-15 YEARS OLD AND HAVEN'T PUT A DIME INTO THEIR CAR, OTHER THAN MAINTENANCE, NEW TIRES, OIL CHANGES, ETC. I CANNOT EXPRESS THE AMOUNT OF STRESS THIS CAR HAS PUT ON ME. IT HAS LEFT ME STRANDED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR. NOT RELIABLE WHATSOEVER, WOULD NEVER PURCHASE A DODGE/CHRYSLER PRODUCT AGAIN. EVERY TIME I TAKE IT SOME WHERE, THE MECHANICS ALWAYS MENTION THE POOR DESIGN OF THE ENGINE. *TR
ENGINE WOULD NOT START IN THE RAIN. WHEN I TRIED AGAIN ON A SUNNY DAY, ENGINE STARTED AND THEN A VERY LOUD METALLIC CLICKING SOUND CAME FROM THE ENGINE. ENGINE HYDROLOCKED DUE TO EXCESSIVE WATER POURING FROM THE WINDSHIELD ONTO THE ENGINE CAUSING WATER TO PENETRATE THE CYLINDERS. VEHICLE WOULD STALL WHEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN OR IN A CARWASH. WELL MAINTAINED AND OIL CHANGED FREQUENTLY. NOW VEHICLE IS WORTHLESS DUE TO DODGE DESIGN FLAW OR FAULTY PARTS. *TR
2004 DODGE DURANGO WITH 5.7 HEMI,WOULD ALWAYS EXPERIENCE A SLIGHT ENGINE MISS AFTER A HARD RAIN AND VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF WITH ENGINE MISS IF RAN THROUGH AN AUTO CAR WASH. HAD A VERY HEAVY RAIN LAST NIGHT, RAN VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES TODAY WITH NO REAL NOTICEABLE PROBLEMS. FELT SLIGHT ENGINE MISS WHILE SITTING AT IDLE. ON MY HOME FROM PICKING UP OUR DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL, WITH NO WARNING THE ENGINE BLEW A ROD OUT THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. FROM READING SEVERAL DIFFERENT FORUMS IT APPEARS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. HAVE ALWAYS HAD SERVICE MAINTENANCE PERFORMED EVERY 3,000 MILES! SOUNDS LIKE A MANUFACTURES DEFECT CAUSING ENGINE TO BLOW ROD AT SAME LOCATION ON MULTIPLE VEHICLES! EVERY VEHICLE IN OUR DRIVEWAY IS A DODGE BRAND, MOPAR RUNS THROUGH OUR VEINS. CHRYSLER CORP. KNOWS THEY HAVE A COMPONENT FAILURE ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR AND ENGINE COMBINATION AND IT IS TIME THEY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO GET MY VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY, PRAISING GOD OUR DAUGHTER WAS NOT DRIVING WHO JUST GOT HER LEARNERS PERMIT. SHE (15 YEARS OLD) MOST LIKELY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REACT QUICKLY ENOUGH TO THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE TO GET THE VEHICLE, WHICH DIED INSTANTLY OFF THE BUSY HIGHWAY. *TR
VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON A RESIDENTIAL SIDE STREET FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 HOURS WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. THE ENTIRE FRONT END AND DASH WAS DESTROYED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STATED IT APPEARED TO BE AN OBVIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, SO THEY DID NOT NEED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER. THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE INTERIOR ROOF BECAUSE THE WIRING HAD STARTED BURNING ALONG THE EDGES OF THE ROOF INTERIOR. THE VEHICLE WAS UP-TO-DATE ON FACTORY RECALLS, AND DESPITE THIS, IT STILL BURNED. I DID NOT RECEIVE A WARNING, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS CLEAR, AND THE 2004 DURANGO ONLY HAD ABOUT 75500 MILES AS OF 4/2013. I WAS THE SOLE OWNER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE MADE AN UNUSUAL NOISE AFTER IT WAS STARTED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 142,000.
WENT OUT TO START 2004 DODGE DURANGO MORNING AFTER A HEAVY RAIN, TURNED KEY AND ROD WENT THRU BLOCK. HAD PROBLEMS WITH IT WHEN IT RAINED (CAUSED MULTIPLE MISFIRES) FOUND OUT LATER AFTER THE ENGINE BLEW THAT THE COMPANY WAS AWARE OF THE COWL LEAKAGE PROBLEM THAT ALLOWS WATER TO LEAK ONTO MOTOR. THINK THERE SHOULD OF BEEN A RECALL OR LETTER ADVISING US THIS NEEDED FIXED. EVIDENTIALLY THESE COMPLAINTS AREN'T BEING READ OR NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION TO THEM. GUESS WERE ALL SCREWED BY DODGE. VEHICLE WAS MAINTAINED PROPER EVERY 3000 MILES JUST FOR INFORMATION DODGE WILL NOT HELP ANYONE IF ENGINE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THEY WILL TELL YOU YOUR ON YOUR OWN. SALE, SALE, SALE, YOUR DODGE DURANGO AND DON'T BUY ANOTHER ONE. SALE IT AND DON'T KEEP BECAUSE IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON AN INTERSTATE DURING A PRETTY HEAVY THUNDERSTORM. I NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STARTING TO HESITATE AND LOSE POWER. AS I STARTED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN TO PULL OVER THE ENGINE QUIT AT ABOUT 50 MPH. THANKFULLY I WAS ON A STRAIGHT PART OF THE ROAD AND WITHOUT POWER I WAS ABLE TO GUIDE THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD WITH OUT AN INCIDENT. AFTER WAITING OUT THE STORM TO PASS ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE, WITH TRAFFIC FLYING BY, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AFTER SOME HESITATION AND DRIVE IT HOME. DURING THE NIGHT THE VEHICLE SAT IN THE DRIVEWAY WHILE WE HAD SOME PRETTY GOOD RAINFALL IN THE AREA. THE NEXT MORNING I WENT AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE TO GO TO WORK. THE ENGINE TURNED OVER, IT STARTED, FOLLOWED BY A GRINDING NOISE AND THEN THE MOTOR QUIT AND HASN'T STARTED SINCE. AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE LOOKED OVER WE HAVE FOUND THAT TWO OF THE CYLINDERS HAD QUITE A BIT OF WATER IN THEM WHICH HAD APPEARED TO HYDRO LOCK THE ENGINE. DODGE NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ISSUE AND STOP PUSHING THE BLAME AND COST OFF ON TO THE VEHICLE OWNERS. THIS IS A HUGE DESIGN FLAW AND SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
DRIVING NORTH BOUND ON I 95 IN SOUTH CAROLINA THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND A FLAPPING SOUND FOLLOWED BY A LOSS OF POWER AND A VERY ROUGH IDLE. PULL TO OFF RAMP, SHUT CAR OFF, AND CALLED FOR A NEARBY DODGE DEALER AND A TOW. IT SEEMS A "NEW" ENGINE IS REQUIRED. THE DEALER COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM DROVE THE DURANGO ON A SATURDAY BEFORE WE HAD A LOT OF RAIN SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING AFTER RAIN STOPPED STARTED THE DURANGO ONLY TO HEAR A BANG THEN SOMETHING KNOCKING IN MOTOR TOOK IT TO THE DEALER ONLY TO BE TOLD AFTER SPENDING ANOTHER 325 DOLLARS THAT THE MOTOR HYDRA LOCKED AND BROKE A ROD. NOW THE DEALERSHIP AND DODGE BOTH SAY THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. SINCE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY SOMEONE NEEDS TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT FIXING A PROBLEM THEY KNOW EXISTS. ANY AND ALL TIMES THE BATTERY CABLES ARE REMOVED FROM THE BATTERY FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON A 2004 DODGE DURANGO, THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES AFTER RECONNECTION OF THE BATTERY. THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BECOMES INOPERATIVE AND MUST BE RECALIBRATED BY A DEALER AT A COST IN EXCESS OF $100. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED. *TR
I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT INTO TRAFFIC. AFTER ACCELERATING TO FOR A SECOND, THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD NOISE AND STARTED SHAKING BADLY. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD, OIL WAS DRIPPING OFF THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE ENGINE. AFTER LOOKING UNDER THE VEHICLE I COULD SEE A LARGE HOLE (ABOUT THE SIZE OF A CHILD'S HAND) IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE DURANGO SUFFERED CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. THE PISTON ROD HAS BROKEN AND PUNCTURED A HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE. IT WAS A RAINY DAY AND HAD BEEN RAINING A LOT IN THE PREVIOUS DAYS. ONLY AFTER THIS HAPPENED, I DID SOME CHECKING ON THE INTERNET. I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE 2004-2005 DURANGOS WITH THE 5.7 HEMI ENGINE. THE WINDSHIELD COWL LEAKS WATER ONTO THE ENGINE, THE WATER LEAKS INTO THE ENGINE AND CAUSES THE PISTON RODS TO RUST AND WEAKEN. THIS CAUSES FAILURE WITHOUT NOTICE. DODGE KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM AND CHANGED THE WINDSHIELD COWL SOMETIME IN 2005-2006. THIS VEHICLE WAS EXTREMELY WELL TAKEN CARE OF. NOTHING BUT SYNTHETIC OIL WENT INTO THIS ENGINE. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, I TOOK MY DURANGO TO A MECHANIC BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD SMELL GASOLINE ON THE OIL CAP. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SMELL IS MOST LIKELY FROM WATER GETTING INTO THE ENGINE. MOST LIKELY FROM THE INTAKE AND THAT I WAS NORMAL. NOW I KNOW THAT IT WAS WATER GETTING INTO THE ENGINE, A LOT MORE THAN A LITTLE MOISTURE COMING IN THROUGH THE AIR INTAKE. THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW!! EVERY 2004 DURANGO WITH THE 5.7 WILL BLOW THE ENGINE IF IT GETS EXPOSED TO RAIN OR CAR WASH!! PLEASE, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BY DODGE. *TR

AFTER A SNOW STORM AND THE SNOW MELTED, WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO START IT, THE STARTER WAS GRINDING. THE ENGINE WAS HYDROLOCKED AND BROKE THE CONNECTING ROD FOR #3 CYLINDER. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION TURNED UP A TECH BULLETIN (NOT MANDATORY RECALL) TO REPLACE COWL AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD DUE TO WATER LEAKAGE ONTO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHICH CAN CAUSE MISFIRING. I NEVER RECEIVED NOTICE OF THIS TECH BULLETIN OR THE POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES OF NOT IMPLEMENTING IT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THE DEFECTIVE COWL COULD CAUSE TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE IN THE TECH BULLETIN. THE MELTING SNOW SEEPED INTO THE #3 CYLINDER, POSSIBLY FROM A FAILED INTAKE MANIFOLD SEAL OR WARPED INTAKE MANIFOLD (YET TO BE DETERMINED), AND CAUSED HYDROLOCK. I FOUND EVIDENCE OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE OIL PAN WHICH LEAKED FROM #3 CYLINDER. I ALSO FOUND WATER UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEAR THE #3 CYLINDER. I HAVE A 2004 DODGE DURANGO, WHEN IT RAINS IT SHAKE WHILE DRIVING AND THEN THE ENGINE WOULD MAKE SOME NOISE HAVE IT CHECK OUT IT WAS NOTHING, AT THE END OF FEBRUARY I HAD PARK AT HOME FOR THE WEEKEND WHEN IT CAME TO MONDAY WANTED TO GO OUT CAR WOULD NOT START, TRIED TO POWER CHARGE THE BATTERY STARTED BUT DIED RIGHT AFTER, HAD IT CHECK OUT MECHANIC GUY SAID MY ENGINE IS GONE AND I'M STILL MAKING PAYMENT TOWARDS THAT CAR AND IT'S ABOUT 3,000 OR MORE TO GET ANOTHER ENGINE. IT'S NOT RIGHT THAT ALL OF THESE PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM, SOMETHING NEED TO BE DONE RIGHT AWAY. SO NOW THE CAR IS JUST SITTING THERE, WHILE I'M MAKING PAYMENTS ON IT. *TR

HAD DRIVEN TRUCK EARLIER IN DAY HAD NO ISSUES AT ALL. DROVE AND SOUNDED LIKE IT ALWAYS DID!! WENT TO START IT THAT EVENING TO GET DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL EVENT AND IT MADE A HORRIBLE NOISE AND WOULDN'T START! MECHANIC SAID IT WAS STARTER. AFTER 2 DAYS OF WAITING FOR A STARTER THAT NOONE KEEPS IN STOCK! PUT IT ON AND NOTHING! MECHANIC SAID IT WAS STUCK FLYWHEEL. HE GOT IT TO TURN OVER BUT THE MOTOR WAS KNOCKING VERY LOUD!! NOW I'M WITHOUT A CAR BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY FOR A NEW MOTOR!! *TR
MY WELL-MAINTAINED 2004 DODGE DURANGO SLT BEGAN DOING SOMETHING BIZARRE A FEW MONTHS AGO AT ABOUT 120,000 MILES. THIS HAS 4.7L V8 AND THE AWD-4HI-4LO 2-SPEED TRANSFER CASE. THE "SERVICE 4WD" AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING, AND IT FELT LIKE THE TRANSFER CASE WAS STUCK IN 4HI WITH THE TIRES GRABBING ON A TURN. THE SELECTOR KNOB ON THE DASH WOULD NOT FUNCTION. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO MY MECHANIC WHO CHECKED THE FUNCTION OF THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR, INSPECTED THE MOTOR AND WIRING, AND CHANGED THE TRANSFER CASE FLUID AGAIN. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER AND THEY ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO CHANGE THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR. THE MOTOR COSTS $1190 PLUS TWO HOURS LABOR AND TWO QUARTS OF ATF+4 FLUID. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK BACK TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MOTOR OR THE TRANSFER CASE OR THE DASH SELECTOR KNOB. HE SAID HE BELIEVES THIS IS A CONTROL MODULE OR PROGRAMMING ISSUE. I GOT A THIRD OPINION AT MY LOCAL LEE MYLES. THEY CONCURRED THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR AND THERE MUST BE SOME ISSUE WITH THE COMPUTER, PROGRAMMING, OR ONE OR MORE OF THE CONTROL MODULES. THE TRUCK CONTINUES TO DO THE SAME THING. THE MALFUNCTION CONDITION EXISTS APPROXIMATELY 65% OF THE TIME. I CAN'T AFFORD TO BRING TO THE DEALER NOW AND SPEND OVER $1300 FOR A REPAIR THAT I DO NOT THINK WILL CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ ON MANY MESSAGE BOARDS THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH 2004-2006 DURANGOS AND CHANGING THE MOTOR, OR THE SWITCH DOES NOT HELP THE SITUATION. I ALSO NOTICE THAT AT TIMES WHEN I OPEN THE DOORS OR UNLOCK THE DOORS WITH THE KEY FOB, I CAN HEAR THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR CYCLING. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL OR PROGRAMMING ISSUE. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEELS AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN THE MALFUNCTION CONDITION EXISTS AND I FEAR THIS IS STRAINING THE TRANSMISSION. *TR

THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE CONNECTING ROD HAD DETACHED FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
04 DODGE DURANGO WITH 5.7 HEMI ENGINE WOULD RUN ROUGH EVERY TIME IT WOULD RAIN. HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. MECHANICS WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE EXACT PROBLEM. ON FEB. 13TH WENT OUT TO START CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START. THINKING IT WAS THE STARTER WE TOOK IT OFF HAD IT CHECKED AND WAS TOLD THE STARTER WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION. SO WE HAD THE BATTERY CHECKED.....IT WAS FINE AS WELL. AFTER GETTING THE STARTER AND BATTERY PUT BACK ON, THE CAR STARTED AND RAN FOR A FEW DAYS. ON TUESDAY FEB 26TH THE CAR WOULD NOT START AGAIN- THIS WAS AFTER A HEAVY NIGHT OF RAIN. LET IT SET A COUPLE OF DAYS....STARTED RIGHT UP. ON MARCH 12TH THIS PROBLEM REPEATED ITSELF SO WE TOOK IT BACK TO MECHANIC. MECHANIC ASKED US TO LET HIM KEEP THE DURANGO SO HE COULD TRY TO GET THE PROBLEM TO REPEAT ITSELF IN ORDER FOR HIM TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING WHEN IT WAS FAILING TO START. AND THEN TODAY MARCH 26TH, AFTER A COUPLE OF RAINY/SNOWY DAYS, HE WENT OUT TO START IT AND FOUND THAT THE MOTOR IS NOW DEFINITELY BLOWN. (THE BAD THING IS WE STILL OWE A YEAR AND A HALF ON IT!!). *TR
I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN MARCH 2012. I STARTED NOTICING THAT DURING A HEAVY RAIN OR A CAR WASH THAT IT WOULD BOG DOWN, IDLE ROUGHLY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FEB 2013 TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT SINCE I HAD BEEN STRANDED IN PARKING LOTS, THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND ACTUALLY GOT STUCK IN A CAR WASH BECAUSE MY VEHICLE CUT OFF. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT MY COWL PANEL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, BASICALLY THIS PART WAS NOT DESIGNED CORRECTLY AND RAIN WATER OR WATER FROM A CAR WASH WAS DRAINING INTO MY ENGINE. HAD THE PART REPLACED FOR A WONDERFUL PRICE OF $236.00. I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN AT THE END OF APRIL, PICKED MY KIDS UP FROM SCHOOL AND WAS STRANDED IN A PARKING LOT FOR AN 1HR BC OF THE HARD RAIN. TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK ON MAY 6TH TO THE VENDOR MECHANIC(STILL UNDER A WARRANTY, DOESN'T HELP:( ) AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE PART HAD BEEN REPLACED THAT IT SHOULD WORK, COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY IT WASN'T WORKING. CONTACTED CHRYSLER ASKING IF THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT COULD BE DONE, CHRYSLER DOESN'T UNDER STAND WHY THIS NEWLY DESIGNED PART IS NOT WORKING. SO I HAVE AT THIS TIME, 2 MECH/TECH'S TELLING ME THAT THEY CANT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE PART SHOULD WORK. TRIED AN ALTERNATE METHOD WITH WEATHER STRIPPING AND SILICONE TO PLUG UP THE HOLES. I PICK SAID VEHICLE UP FROM THE SHOP ON MAY 8TH, DRIVE 3.2 MILES TURN ON MY STREET AN MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY CUTS OFF! CAN NOT GET IT TO CRANK BACK. CALL THE MECHANIC SHOP BACK EXPLAIN TO THEM WHAT HAPPENED TAKE IT BACK THE NEXT DAY THEY BELIEVE THAT IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY, MY WARRANTY WONT COVER IT. HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO DODGE AND BECAUSE OF THIS COWL PANEL LEAK MY INTAKE GASKETS ARE MESSED UP AND THE CM FRONT AND BACK NEED TO BE FLASHED AND RESET, TOTALING OUT TO BE $870.00 BUT STILL CANT FIX THE COWL PANEL. IM DAMNED IF I DO DAMNED IF I DON'T. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN, I NEED SOMEONE TO START TAKING THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY. *TR
VEHICLE STARTED TO RUN A LITTLE ROUGH. WIFE WAS AT A STOP LIGHT ACCELERATED UPON GREEN AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND A JERK. SHE NURSED IT HOME ABOUT A MILE OR SO. PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND SHUT IT OFF AND OIL WAS EVERYWHERE. I LOOKED AROUND AND DISCOVERED A HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK BEHIND THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE ABOUT THE SIZE OF MY FIST. HAVE HAD THE DURANGO SINCE IT WAS BRAND NEW. ITS ALWAYS RAN GREAT. WE LOVE OUR DURANGO. VERY UPSET THAT THIS HAPPENED. WE DO NOT HAVE MUCH MONEY TO SPARE AT MONTHS END, BUT WE NEEDED A CAR SO WE WERE FORCED TO GO BUY ANOTHER. WOULD LIKE TO MAYBE GET THE DURANGO FIXED. BUT THAT MIGHT TAKE A LITTLE WHILE TO GET THE MONEY NOW. BE NICE IF CHRYSLER COULD SEND ME A NEW ENGINE OR SOMETHING. I HAVE OWNED A TOTAL OF 5 CHRYSLER BRAND VEHICLES. *TR
WENT TO START IT FOR WORK ON DAY AND IT STARTED MAKING A HORRIBLE NOISE. I GOT IT LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC, WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE HAD BLOWN. *TR
BOUGHT THIS 04 DURANGO WITH A HEMI, IN 2010. IT HAS ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH RUNNING ROUGH OR STALLING AFTER/DURING RAIN. SOMETHING IS GETTING WET? DEALERSHIP TRIED TO FIX IT A COUPLE OF TIMES. IT WORKS FINE AFTER IT DRIES. ALSO THERE WAS A RECALL IN 2004 FOR POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE FAILURE POSSIBLY CAUSING FIRE. THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN TO HAVE THE REPAIR FOR THIS RECALL (#D40) IN 2007. THE SAME BATTERY CABLE IS NOW FAILING AND IS IN THE SHOP FOR REPAIR. THE BATTERY CABLES ARE NOT AVAILABLE AFTER MARKET SO THEY HAVE BEEN ORDERED FROM DODGE. THERE IS NO PROVISION IN THE RECALL TO REPAIR WHEN THE THING FAILS EVEN AFTER IT WAS FIXED. IT STARTED HAVING ALL KINDS OF ELECTRICAL ISSUES SO I BROUGHT IT TO REPAIR SHOP (NOT DEALERSHIP). DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING. I DID CALL DAIMLER/CHRYSLER RECALL CENTER AND THEY WERE VERY NICE, TOLD ME TO SEND IN ALL THE INFORMATION TO THEM FOR POSSIBLE REIMBURSEMENT. THE RECALL IS GOOD FOR 10 YEARS, AND I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER. THIS IS 9 YEARS LATER, BUT EVIDENTLY THE RECALL REPAIR HAS FAILED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE CONNECTING ROD FRACTURED, WHICH CAUSED INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,000. ..UPDATED 03/18/13 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THERE HAD BEEN NO PRIOR PROBLEMS OTHER THAN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, WHICH THE DEALER MAINTAINED WAS A VACCUUM LEAK. THERE WAS ALSO A ROUGH RUNNING PROBLEM THAT THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR BY CHANGING PLUG WIRES. THAT PROBLEM WAS NOT REPAIRED. UPDATED 04/26/2013 *JS
