NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Rough idling. Misfire. I've changed the sparkplugs twice already, the Wiring harness, Injectors, purge valve, etc.
this Dodge Caravan has an engine problem with cylinder 2 misfire that has occurred in numerous vans with this motor. this van was purchased to aid my handicap wife and will no longer pass the Georgia Emissions Test required to purchase a valid tag. i have spent the normal repair dollars for the basic items suggested, however, everyone with this problem considers it a manufactures defect. Social media is full of owners with the same complaint. this problem seems to occur just after the factory warranty has expired, so dodge is not wanting to cover the expense. to have a 2019 model vehicle that can not pass the safety emission test is quite up setting to me. There needs to be a recall on this issue or an exempt status for this vehicle, since Dodge is not standing behind their product. By the way, my family has 2 of these exact vans, and both are failing in the same manner. this failure is not an isolated problem, and we as consumers need help to correct this deficiency. i have been struggling with this for over a year now
Passenger sliding door won’t lock or unlock
Stalling, power loss and misfire conditions on #2 cylinder. Safety at risk as losses power while driving and vehicle shakes/stalls. Vehicle has been seen by mechanic who states this is a factory defect regarding Pentastar V6 motors. They looked at cylinders and my #2 cylinder is the issue.
UNKNOWN The reverse camera does not function properly when the vehicle is hot or when the vehicle is in a hot environment. It consistently fails to show a picture of what is behind the vehicle when the vehicle is left in the sun or when the vehicle has been running and the engine is still hot. The vehicle is available for inspection. The problem has not been inspected by an independent service center. Nor has the vehicle been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There are no warning lamps or messages. However, when it's hot outside the vehicle, the speedometer screen on the driver's dashboard is faded. It stays faded until cabin cools down and then it no longer looks faded. Each time it fades, the reverse camera doesn't work. When the outside environment is cold outside the speedometer screen and reverse camera work fine.
Issues with locking mechanisms. Makes buzzing noises.
Passenger sliding door on 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan keeps malfunctioning. I cannot at times open the door from the outside or open the door from the inside. It has been repaired 3 times but the problem keeps coming back.
The contact owns a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle jerked and independently stopped. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with rear transmission seal failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the transmission was replaced in 2022, 2023, and May of 2025. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact requested a buy-back; however, the request was denied. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
Diagnosed and replaced failed cylinder head. Camshafts and related parts. This should not happen at 76,202 miles.
Sliding door lock acuators have issues havr already replaced passenger side because it wouldn't lock. Now driver side sliding door acuator is stuck locked.
I have my 2nd dodge grand caravan that I have trouble with the automatic doors keep opening and shutting over and over even with something like a body in the way. I had a 2016 that I had the same problems with and had it in over and over the dealerships kept telling me they could not duplicate the problem I finally traded it in for this one and have battled the same problems with this one. I have a damaged nerve in my dominant right arm and the doors will open and shut over and over the only way to stop them is to jerk on the door handle hard this causes me agony for weeks . I am on a permanent 15 # lifting pushing pulling restriction with this arm and I have to jerk pretty hard to get it to stop as I said the pain is severe then for weeks. It doesn't do it real frequently but when it does it is a problem. One time with this van the door shut on me and bruised my arm another time I put a big container of laundry detergent in the door thinking it would stop when hitting something that hard well I had to pull the soap out as It was hitting against it so hard I was afraid the detergent bottle would break.. I have a Dodge executive on my case and he keeps telling me he will call me back and does not. I have had both vehicles in to 3 different dealerships multiple times and told the same thing we can not duplicate the problem. Recently my Aunt is in a wheelchair and she has a caregiver that women was in the passenger side back door laying over the seat to put my aunts stuff in the van. Thankfully I had the other back door open and was standing there watching her. The door will pop real loud then start opening and closing I yelled for her to get out and she jumped out fast enough not to get injured buy she was laying over the seat that door would have hit her at the waist and could have really injured her had I not been standing there. The door opened and shut Over and over until I told her to jerk the handle to stop it and she did do then you have to jerk the handle again. Consumer would like to add that manufacturer
Right sliding door will not lock/unlock using remote or manual application.
The contact owns a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the electronics would suddenly malfunction causing the windshield wipers to erroneously activate, the turn signals to become inoperable, the backup camera to fail, and the brakes to malfunction. The contact indicated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure and no service was performed. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
The active head restraint on the passenger seat deployed all of a sudden. There has been no collision or anything. It just deployed on its own. Not sure what triggered it. I just purchased this vehicle from a car dealership about 2 months ago.
Rear passenger door will not unlock or open.
Cylinder misfire #2 Is a permanent code.the first time I got it fixed the car just stopped with no warning I couldn't get it to start unless the driver door was open. The shop had it for am entire month and had a new head rebuilt 2 weeks later the light was back on. It would go off and on for the next year, we changed filters, plug, gasket. After I got it inspected last year when the light turned off for a day that was the last time it was off. I haven't been able to get it inspected yet it's over due. 2019 was 5 years ago I've never had these problems with any other vehicles that's 10+ older. They need to do something they know what's going on it happened it 2012 and they discontinued the vans in 2020. They need to make it right. The engine is not safe it randomly loosed acceleration or occasionally gains it. I'm afraid of crashing into someone or being stranded somewhere or it dying in the middle of the road. I need this vehicle I'm still paying for it and don't really have other options to for other transportation while this one gets into a shop
On the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan equipped with remote start via key fob, the following hazardous senario can occur. The vehicle is parked in an "attached" garage with all doors to that space closed. The remote start function can be activated nearby from the dwelling, unintentionally, and without human awareness, since activation of this function only requires 2 clicks of the remote start button within 5 seconds. This can occur with key fob in the pocket, for example, or by other random means. The vehicle, functioning as designed, will start in the enclosed space, and run for up to 15 minutes. Substantial exhaust gases can accumulate in the garage space during this period, with substantial risk of carbon monoxide existing in that space and permeation into adjacent living spaces. This owner contends that the vehicle designers should have anticipated this and similar senarios, and should have provided, by design, a means by which the remote start function can be disabled/enabled as desired by the vehicle owner or by Dodge service. Presently, there is no feature to disable remote start. Local Dodge service indicated that the only option is a key fob without remote start button. This represents a potential safety issue which should be evaluated by the manufacturer.
Passenger sliding door will only lock/unlock manually, does not lock or unlock with the electric door locks or with FOB. This was only discovered after someone was able to open the door with the vehicle locked. The vehicle was taken to an auto repair shop. It was explained that the actuator in the door is bad and because of limited software release can only be repaired at dealership. The vehicle is owned and used by a non-profit for client services, and this creates not only safety issues for staff and clients, but undue hardship for cost of repairs.
Car shakes which feels like first 3 gears during acceleration. As if riding over spike strip.
Lock actuator failure on driver side rear sliding door. This is a concern for a two year old vehicle and poses a safety risk for passenger/child egress.
I just bought the car. My family was very excited to have powered doors, including the trunk. We tested the doors thoroughly. That night I push the button on the key fob to open the trunk and hear an awful metallic ripping noise. I inspected the door to figure out the cause. The spoiler, which has the brake light attached, was loose. It was still attached though and I needed to go somewhere. While driving the spoiler flew off and completely detached. Luckily no one else was on the road at the time. My husband found the part later and the clips to hold the piece on were broken.
•low oil pressure light. mas check engine light. •I could of crashed. or Worse. engine could of blown. •yes. • yes. •.yes. i took my car put on september 11,2021., then drove it on monday to test drive. só the low oil pressure Light came on. i took it to a dealer mechanic, 12mins later. because the car was stalling out.. then my serviçe advisor said eathir test drive it or see if i have a warranty. on it.and i know that i still have a Power staion warranty on it that is still active... its been in the shop 2 days after, september 11,2021 because the same day it was stalling out 2 days after i drove my car, is when the advisor told me this only option i had...
The door handle on the interior passenger side front seat snapped off. Less than six months later, the door handle on the interior of the driver side front seat snapped off. If this occurs, and we get in an accident before we can get a replacement, we are trapped in the vehicle.
2019 Dodge Caravan driver door handle broke. It is a thin plastic. This van was brand new when I got it and it just barely turn 2 years old. I am disabled and when I cannot use my left side it is hard to wine down window and open the door from the outside. I cannot climb to other seats to get out. I asked the dealer where I got the van if they were going to fix it. I was told labor and part nearly $500. I feel they should fix free cause it is a danger to people with disavantages.
Driver door handle broke off. I am disabled and could not get out of van without winding down window and opening door from the outside. The van is only 2 years old. I took it to the dealer I bought it from and it will cost close to $550.00 to fix.
On three separate occasions the engine has stalled while idling. The Van needs to be placed into Park, the ignition turned off, and then turned back on. No check engine lights or warns of the vehicle having any issues.
The passenger door interior handle cracked off on July 3, 2021. I was exiting the vehicle normally and did not use much force to try to open the door. The lack of an operational handle made it impossible for me as the passenger to open the door myself from the inside. What if there was an accident or the vehicle ended up in the water? I would not be able to exit from my side. I would be trapped. I felt very unsafe. There was no warning of imminent part failure. We ordered a replacement part on July 5th and performed the repair ourselves. The broken part was never inspected or documented. We noticed the part was offered for sale in pairs, which was disconcerting. We ordered a pair a few days later as a precaution. Within a week's time, the driver's side interior door handle also broke off. The handles appear to be shiny, silver, and metallic but in reality are incredibly cheap plastic. Both front interior door handles lasted less than 3 years under normal use. A main concern is that in the event of any emergency, in a panic, a person inside the minivan may use a lot of force to attempt to rapidly exit the vehicle. But you can't pull hard on these interior door handles because they obviously are not very strong and break easily. After the driver's side handle broke, we bought an additional replacement part so that we have a pair in reserve for the next time either one cracks and breaks. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

CONCLUSION: I could have caused/been in a serious, possibly fatal accident due to this failure of DODGE 2019 GRAND CARAVAN WITH LESS THAN 23,000 total miles driven.
Before 50K miles the transmission went out and a cylinder blew at the same time. There was no warning this would happen and when it happened we were in traffic and caused the vehicle to jump almost hitting another car. This was repaired by Dodge. At the time of pick up the technician in the shop told us that this is a common issue with these vans and he sees this all the time. Also the breaks have not worked properly since purchase. An online form shows many owners have this same issue and have determined that the break system is under rated for the size of vehicle.
The contact owns a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed, and the vehicle slid to the left. The contact described the move to the left, as if she was turning the steering wheel, but she was not. Additionally, while driving from a standing stop, the rear tires was spinning as if she had applied the brakes before the vehicle jolted forward. The contact stated that the engine was making abnormal sounds and the vehicle was vibrating. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to several independent mechanics who could not determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM DEALER OF TIM DAHLE AND I COULD NOT FIND THE SPARE TIRE WHEN I CHECKED IT. THE SALESMAN TOLD ME DODGE GRAND CARAVAN DOES NOT HAVE SPARE TIRE. WHEN I WAITING FOR FINANCIAL PROCESS TO PAY FOR IT, I CHECKED YOUTUBE AND FOUND THE POSITION OF SPARE TIRE. SO, I ASKED THE SALESMAN TO HELP ME CHECKING IF THIS CARE HAS SPARE TIRE OR NOT. THEY DID NOT INFORM ME UNTIL I COMPLETED ALL PROCESS TO PURCHASE IT. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE SPARE TIRE AND THIS TRIM (SXT) OF GRAND CARAVAN DOES NOT HAVE SPARE TIRE. THEY SAID ONLY THE TRIM OF GT HAVE SPARE TIRE. HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT THE TRUTH AND I HAVE BOUGHT IT BEFORE I KNOW THE DEFECT OF THIS CAR. I AM NOT SURE IF DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION IS THE CORRECT PLACE I FILE MY COMPLAINT. BUT I THINK THERE ARE 2 THINGS I SHOULD COMPLAIN. FIRST, I WAS NOT GIVEN THE CORRECT DESCRIPTION OF THE CAR'S POTENTIAL RISK WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE. THE SALESMAN TRIED TO HIDE THE FACT ABOUT THE SPARE TIRE, THOUGH I ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT FOR ME. SECOND, ALL THE REPORTS THE DEALERSHIP SHOWN TO ME DID NOT INCLUDE THE ISSUE OF SPARE TIRE UNTIL I FOUND IT. HOWEVER, THE SALESMAN STILL TRIED TO HIDE THIS ISSUE. THEY EXPLAIN THAT THE SPARE TIRE DOES NOT HAVE USE IN MOST OF TIME, BUT I BELIEVE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT IN SELF-REPAIRING OF TIRE ISSUES, ESPECIALLY IN LONG-DISTANCE TRAVELLING. AND OF COURSE, I TOLD THE SALESMAN THAT I WOULD TRAVEL FROM UT TO NJ IN THIS MARCH. BUT THEY STILL TRIED TO DECEIVE ME TO BELIEVE THAT THIS CAR SHOULD BE WITHOUT SPARE TIRE. I CANNOT PROVIDE ANY IMAGE BECAUSE OF THE POSITION TO FIX SPARE TIRE IN GRAND CARAVAN IS VERY HIDDEN. BUT THEY KNOW THAT IT DID NOT HAVE.

THE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR NO LONGER LOCKS. THE LOCKING MECHANISM IS STUCK IN THE UNLOCK POSITION. THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE SECURED 😫. BEFORE THE LOCK STOPPED WORKING IT MADE A BUZZING SOUND A COUPLE OF TIMES AND STOPPED WORKING. I JUST REALIZED THIS WHEN MY DAUGHTER OPENED THE DOOR WITHOUT ME OPENING THE DRIVER'S DOOR FIRST. IT WAS STATIONARY THE FIRST TIME THEN THE SECOND TIME IT BUZZED THE VAN WAS JN MOTION ON A CITY STREET.
THE CHILD PROTECTION LOCK SYSTEM NO LONGER FUNCTIONS ON MY 2019 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN DUE TO THE SLIDING DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR MALFUNCTIONING. WE ONLY DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM BY ACCIDENT WHEN MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR BEFORE I UNLOCKED THE VEHICLE. WHILE SPEAKING WITH THE MANUFACTURER ON 11/5/2020, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL BEING ISSUED EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY INSTANCES OF THIS PROBLEM OCCURRING IN SIMILAR VEHICLES. I AM GREATLY CONCERNED THAT PARENTS ARE DRIVING AROUND THINKING THE CHILD PROTECTION LOCK IS ACTIVE WHEN A CHILD CAN OPEN THE SLIDING DOOR AT ANY TIME, EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I CANNOT GET A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THIS PROBLEM, SO THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION.
PASSENGER SIDE POWER SLIDING REAR DOOR,LATCHES,BUT WILL NOT LOCK.DOOR.USED KEY FOB TO LOCK DOORS WHEN GOING INTO A STORE TO SHOP.ALL THE DOORS LOCKED, BUT THE ONE .MENTIONED..VECHICLE WAS PARKED AT THE TIME.OTHER THAN NOT BEING ABLE TO SECURE THE VEHICLE,I WORRY THAT A CHILD COULD OPEN THIS DOOR WHEN MOVING,SINCE THIS DOOR WILL NOT LOCK.
