NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2011 Ford Edge. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Door ajar is constantly on. Front passenger door. This is causing my dome lights to stay on, my key beeps twice when securing vehicle.
My car will turn on the lights in the middle of the night, without anybody in it. Battery is continuously dead, even after replacing with a new battery. The alternator and starter have been checked and are good. The passenger door ajar is always on. When I lock the car with my key fob it honks twice and the lights inside the car remain on. The car will die while driving it, when I am at a stop light. The engine light will come on and the only warning that appears is passenger door ajar. Other Ford vehicles have a recall for these horrible issues and my vehicle should be as well. This is a major issue caused by Ford. Period. There is no specific date for this issue, it happens every single day since I have owned this 2011 Ford Edge SE FWD
When hard braking, brake failure. Brakes fine , then go floor when needing brake hard. Have almost been in accident several times. Issue can’t seem to be resolved!!
March 24th 2023 I left the town where I live with a perfectly running vehicle made it an hour away from where I live I heard a winding sound and my car would not accelerate on the interstate then the low oil pressure warning came on I was able to pull over after almost getting rear ended by another vehicle to smoke coming from under my hood. I was able to get a tow truck to come get myself and 2 young children off the interstate safely... I had my vehicle towed back to where I live to a mechanic shop to find out this is a common issue with FORD that the enteral water pump came loose which leaked coolant into my oil which made my engine seize and blew my engine.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-40 MPH, the vehicle lost motive and stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact who is a certified mechanic, inspected the vehicle and became aware that the clutch had been damaged from extreme heat. The contact determined that the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) unit was too close to the catalytic converter and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The dealership was contacted; however, the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
Eternal water pump failure. Water pump came loose while Driving dumped coolant into engine causing engine to have catastrophic failure. Need a full engine replacement. Took vehicle to 2 mechanics for diagnosis. Both states vehicle has coolant in engine. Engine needs replaced I'm uploading an estimate from a certified FORD dealership after I told them the issue over the phone.
My 2011 Ford Edge Limited has been well taken care of March 25, 2023 I was driving down I80 in Nebraska at 75-80mph and without any warning my vehicle proceeded to "stop" it started dinging I had zero power which almost caused an accident on the interstate. I had my 2 young children with me! I pulled over I could see some steam and smoke coming from engine I had to call a tow truck had it taken back to North Platte to Buds Repair shop my engine had catastrophic failure due to a faulty water pump which is currently being investigated with the newer ecoboost models this is a common issue with Ford from 2008 all the way now to 2023! I would like the investigation to be widened further to include models from 2008 and newer!!!
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the contact stated that the brakes was not operating as usual. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the braking system was replaced. The contact was advised to contact the manufacturer for the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 190,000.
Engine light came on but 0 warning detected on the menu . water pump failure on my vehicle. In shop now the repair is costly due to the water pump placement. Could have other major issues in repair shop now . 0 warning on menu inside car ?
Brakes have been going to the floor for a complete stop, have had to slowly brake a lot sooner when coming to any kind of stop. Within the past two days my brakes have been making a whistling sound when brakes not applied. My brake lights stay on while car is in park. Dropping my daughter off at school and applying my brakes my car died in a long line of cars causing me to have to apply the emergency brake.
I own a 2011 Ford Edge. Recently, I’ve been having problems when I get in the vehicle and, also when the passenger behind me gets in and we then shut our doors…. a warning light comes up on the dashboard stating that the passenger’s side door is ajar. After many attempts of slamming the door, the light goes off. My fear is that if I have a passenger, there could be an issue of the door opening, if I can not get the door shut correctly or my battery would drain and I could have a dead battery. I have looked into recalls, but none have been stated. The interesting fact, is that my sister has the same 2011 Edge and the same thing happened to her. She said the dealership fixed hers at no cost and said it was a recall. My vehicle has 102,000 miles on it. Also, my rear view camera does not always work. Safety issue if relying on that. Also, no recalls have been issued.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while exiting a parking lot, the vehicle drove over a patch of ice; the contact depressed the brake pedal and felt that the pressure of the brake was low. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was 70,500.
On 12-11-22 I had a flat tire. I went to put on the spare, following directions step by step, and placing the jack where the arrow points in the correct spot. I jacked my car up and once the tire was off, the car fell onto the ground bending the jack. I then realized the area the jack sits, along with other areas under the car are badly corroded. It's available for inspection, yes. This could have badly hurt me or my 4 year old who was near me had the jack flew out or my hand had been in the area. I am concerned if there are any other framework issues since the car landed hard on concrete. I also dont know if there is other hidden corrosion I cannot see that could pose saftey issues while driving.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle became uncontrollable. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the failure was caused by the transfer case. The contact called an unknown local dealer and was informed that there were no open recalls on the vehicle. The contact was referred to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and referred her to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 37,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated when the vehicle was shifted into reverse(R), the rearview camera image was distorted. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
I was driving to work early morning, roads were wet due to light layer of wet snow. Brakes worked normal when stopping at a stop sign and traffic light. When traffic start moving a vehicle in front of me was going to turn left I applied my brakes to slow down, however when the brake pedal went to the floor it felt like I was going to hit the car. I continued to keep pressing on the brake and finally stopped. When arriving at work the brakes reacted the same when attempting to stop. I checked the brake fluid it was filled. Furthermore there was no indication on my dash regarding brake service needed. I contacted my independent mechanic who informed me to have the car towed or drive it very slow with my flashers on. He also felt it was the brake booster because Ford was aware of this problem so they extended warranty coverage for the booster to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles. My mechanic contacted the dealer who said that it was not covered under the warranty since it was be on 10 years. However I have only 97,580 miles but over the 10year warranty. Besides replacing the brake booster the hydraulic control unit had to be replaced. Bottom line is the cost amounted to $1,750.68. I can't understand why Ford Motor Company has not issued a recall or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not required a recall on these effective brake components. This definitely is a safely related defect when one looks at the number of complaints filed with NHTSA. As we know the steering and brake are major safety components of any vehicle. From my research and review of the complaints it appears that both Ford Motor Company and the NHTSA have other agendas that are more important then a faulty brake component. It just a matter of time before a major accident happens where someone is critically injured. I sure hope and pray it is not a child.
It was the first snowfall of the season. Roads were slippery so my speed was reduced and I was being cautious. As I was approaching a stop sign my anti-lock brakes kicked in. Ever since then my brake pedal has been very soft. At times it felt like I have had to push my brake pedal all the way to the floor in order to stop. Roads are still slippery and when approaching other stop signs (in our development with no other traffic around) I tried to get my anti-locks to work and now they don't kick in and the brake pedal is very soft. There are no indicators on the dash and when doing a "system check" through the computer, it says the brakes are ok.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a turn, the brake pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact was able to stop on the side of the road. The contact shifted the vehicle into park and pumped the brake pedal. The vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the ABS and brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to parts not being available. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be taken to an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was 92,000.
I have heard several service repair technicians advise the Ford Edge 2010 to 2014 have issues with their brake booster. This needs to be recalled and repaired for free.
The contact’s daughter owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the brake pedal was depressed, her daughter heard a hissing sound, and the brake pedal became difficult to depress without extra effort. The contact also stated that on multiple occasions while the brake pedal was depressed, the brake pedal intermittently went to the floor. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there was no recall on the VIN. The manufacturer also confirmed that the vehicle was not under warranty. There was no further assistance provided. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
Without warning or partial failure the brake pedal goes near to the floor before limited breaking function. The vehicle is not capable of emergency braking. Local mechanic advised that the brake booster had to be replaced. It was replaced. I was never told that the HCU module could be the issue. Consequently, the issue still occurs: very soft pedal and very little brakes. After researching, the same identical problem was posted online by numerous Ford Edge owners of my year and other years. Ford Motor Company (Ford) Recall No. 19S54 – Certain 2006-2010 Model Year Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln MKZ Vehicles Equipped with Anti-Lock Brake Systems – Anti-Lock Brake System Hydraulic Control Unit Valve Function. It did not include the Ford Edge. There have been several NHTSA follow up and Ford continued to work with NHTSA to investigate and engaged in ongoing discussion with NHTSA. This issue has gone long enough. Local mechanics are not familiar with the recommended procedure to fix the problem and that it would be prudent to have a properly trained Ford mechanic fix the issue. A recall is necessary so that Ford Edge owners can be notified of a potential danger.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, she had to depress the brake pedal very hard to avoid crashing into a vehicle which had cut in front of her. The contact stated that the brakes failed. The contact stated that the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, failing to stop the vehicle as needed. The contact steered the vehicle into the right lane to avoid a crash. The contact had not noticed any warning lights being illuminated. The contact pulled off the roadway and was finally able to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the brakes had failed to stop the vehicle in a timely manner. The contact drove the vehicle to her residence. The contact stated that she had previously driven the vehicle to a dealer due to a prior brake failure. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the brake booster needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Cel light and P0456 diagnostic reading indicates an EVAP leak. Large fuel leak discovered emanating from the fuel tank area when tank is at full. Fuel tank was removed and upon inspection it revealed the fuel tank had cracked at the top of the rollover valve just underneath a vent line. There is no recall for this fuel tank as there should be. A new fuel tank is ordered and awaiting delivery as there is no replacement part or means to install a new rollover valve. Cost of tank at discount is $1000. Photo of cracked area is attached.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that on various occasions while driving at various speeds, the brakes failed to respond while the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the failure was recurring and that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he had to shift into neutral(N) to stop the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced; however, the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
Had an issue when driving where I had to press all the way to the floor in order to brake. Checked fluid reservoir and it was empty. put brake fluid in, and it was ok for a couple of days. Now it's doing it again. The brake fluid is still in the reservoir so I don't know what the issue is. After reading forums and complaints, this seems to be an extremely common issue with Ford Edges. This is unsafe.
While driving the car on the highway, the upper panoramic roof glass violently exploded and sent shattered glass to the following cars. The sudden explosion diverted my attention to the red which would have caused a serious accident.
I noticed one morning driving to work that when I applied the brakes the pedal became a little bit harder to push to get the same amount of braking action. When I got to work I had the mechanic there take a look at the car because I was worried about driving it home. He checked all of the brake system and could not find a problem. He took it for a test drive and said the brakes worked fine. I drove it home and no problem. A few days later I'm on the way to work and as I approached an intersection the light changed and I applied the brakes and this time the pedal went down closer to the floor and by the time I stopped my car was 1/2 way into the intersection. If a car had been in front of me I would have been in an accident. Again the mechanic looked it over and while he was driving it did it to him one time. He stated in his 45 years as a mechanic he had never seen one where the brakes work fine, then lose power brakes, and then they work fine for awhile. You can't know when it's going to happen. You can drive it for a week and it's fine and then it will do it. The mechanic did some checking and found out that Ford knows about the issue and offered a Customer satisfaction program where they extended the warranty coverage to 150,000 miles or 10 years. This car is a 2011 Ford Edge so it is 11 years old but it only has 98,000 miles. During the Covid 19 shutdown the car was hardly driven for 18 months. Ford says it's out of warranty. How is a failing brake booster NOT a safety recall? The mechanic said brake boosters rarely if ever need replacing and certainly not before 100,000 miles. I can't afford the cost of the repair because gas prices. Is it going to take people being killed in crashes before Ford is forced to recall the car? Brakes are the most important system on the car along with steering. The brake booster randomly not working increases the stopping distance and when it quits your reaction is to push real hard and then the brakes grab.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact stated the brake pedal was depressed again and responded but the vehicle was still in motion. The contact stated that no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who confirmed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the brake booster warranty had expired. The contact stated that the vehicle was at the dealer waiting parts for the repair. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000. The contact stated that when they purchased the vehicle, the part was already on recall. The contact was like a reimbursement for paying to replace the defective part.
The door Ajar is not indicating door is shut therfore I am unable to lock door also dome lights remain on draining battery. I have tried cleaning out area it helps sometimes then goes back to not working. This is a safety issue for me and my kids as I cannot lock my vehicle and my vehicle will not lock making it unsafe while driving.
The car would only brake when pushing the brake pedal to the floor. Once diagnosed it was found the HCU needed to be replaced and was told this was on National Backorder. This car went to a mechanic for 2.5 months due to this. And I took it to the Ford Dealership after being told it could be fixed. There is a recall for other years of this same model for this part.
Brakes must be pumped to make a good grab. My mechanic informed me several cars like mine have had the same issue. New master cylinder and booster are needed. Making this report in case this becomes an issue for other Ford Edge owners. The brakes have always been this way since I bought the vehicle, two years ago. The issue has just gotten worse and I took it to my mechanic on the date listed below.
I went to stop at Kwik Star and stepped on brake and there was significantly diminished stopping power. Because of the curbed sidewalk in front of the building was able to stop. The remainder of my trip home I allowed more stopping distance and was able to return vehicle to my house. I did call my local repair shop and the Power Brake Booster assembly was diagnosed as the issue and replaced on 8/12/2022. The mileage on my vehicle is 79963
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle immediately. The vehicle was able to stop after it drove over a pothole that prevented it from going into a ditch. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with brake booster failure. The dealer informed the contact that the brake booster needed to be replaced; however, the Customer Satisfaction Program: 13N02 (Extended Warranty Coverage On Brake Booster) had expired. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.
Purchased a FORD Edge 2013 on July 27th 2022, from day one, the door ajar light will not go off. We have shut the door, slammed the door, and it still stays on. This is causing the car alarm to go off randomly and the battery is getting weak. We have taken it to FORD and they want $500 to fix the issue. This should be a RECALL!!
Passenger door ajar light stays on and doors won't lock, and the exterior lights come on when the car is parked and not running They had a recall for the drivers side door latch, but not for the passenger side
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the brake pedal would depress to the floorboard with the ABS warning light illuminated on the instrument. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,200.
Have had 2 boosters put in. Still have pedal fade or pedal stiffness. Also had HCU put in as well as Anti lock brake unit put in. Still have same brake problems. Also during this whole fiasco the new pads and rotors got destroyed with in 3000 miles of installation due to brakes locking up while driving and not releasing the pads. We have over 5000.00 dollars invested into brakes and still have a brake problem . I have call the 1-800 customer service number over 5 times asking to speak to a supervisor and have been told the will call back with in 24 hours and the have never called back. This is a huge safety issue as well as an out of pocket issue. [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
I am writing to you today to make you aware of a situation that occurred with my 2011 Ford Edge. On June 14, 2022 my husband and I embarked on a trip to Maine. Halfway through the trip our check engine light came on and heating warnings went off - we immediately pulled over and had the car towed to the nearest mechanic. He diagnosed our water pump was leaking causing the engine and oil to fill with coolant. This caused coolant to flood the engine and cause it to seize. We were on the Mass Turnpike and couldn't go anywhere except to the side of the road. It was an extremely busy road and very dangerous. We towed the car to our mechanic at home and he agreed with the diagnosis and found that there would be no way to save our engine. He believed that the car was in good condition otherwise and it would be beneficial to replace the engine to extend the life of the vehicle. We have always kept up with routine maintenance of our vehicles, including my Ford Edge. Therefore we ended up replacing our entire engine and radiator that was damaged from the failed water pump. I sent a letter to Ford requesting assistance in replacing this engine and I was recommended by the customer service agent to file this report with you.
JUST additional invoices from previous claim
Vehicle was towed to independent repair shop after 2 different dealer service departments failed to return repeated attempts by phone to schedule repair of brakes symptomatic for booster failure (ext. Warranty program, but car is beyond date cutoff due to pandemic). After booster and master cylinder replacement and flush with new brake fluid, mechanuc is reporting that brakes are still bad. Testing and following work procedures, HCU is testing bad. HCU part not available for 6 months. Contacted manufacturer about HCU failure with no DTC codes or warning lights. Asked about existing recall of HCU for other model/years with exact same symptoms and Ford national customer service said my vehicle isn't covered at this time. This is a critical safety failure that occurs without warning and without error codes. It is a known problem for models both before and after this model year. Currently, estimate for repairs is about $4,000. The needed repairs are solely the result of manufacturer known safety defects that should be recalls and their dealers failure to provide timely response to service requests. In my case the brake failures (both Booster and HCU) did not, but nearly did cause an accident,.and the HCU has caused loss of use for 6 months.
Brake booster problems HCU unit problems on 2nd unit 3100 miles needs 3rd
2000 Characters really not enought. Since June of 2022 Replaced brake booster twice Replaced HCU unit Twice Replaced Anti-lock unit once Second set of Rotors and Pads in 3000 miles At Ford again to replace HCU unit and Rotors and Pads again most likely This has all happened in 3100 miles
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 MPH in moderately rainy conditions and coming to a stop, an unknown yellow warning light illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal and felt no braking power. The contact depressed the brake pedal to the floorboard. The contact said that the vehicle slid like it was on the ice. The contact started pumping the brake pedal and eventually recovered some braking power. The contact stated that the brake pedal was soft and she returned to the residence. The failure recurred and the contact drove the vehicle to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle but was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 189,000.
My door ajar light keeps coming on and causing my interior lights to stay on for long periods of time. Today it finally drained my battery. Also when the door ajar light come on, I cannot lock my doors.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the rear windshield exploded. There was no impact to the rear windshield that could have caused it to shatter. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was 113,000.
The Water Pump in my 2011 Ford Edge failed causing catastrophic engine failure. The failure occurred while I was driving on the highway and I lost my power steering and brakes. The engine was inspected at a private service center where I was told that the water pump had caused the engine to seize and the vehicle would need a new engine. Prior to the failure, there were no warning messages or symptoms.
Valve inside Hydraulic Control Unit is sticking causing a soft and quickly fading brake pedal making it extremely difficult to stop quickly to avoid an accident. This is a serious problem.
Door latch sensor doesn’t recognize that the drivers door is shut most of the time. This causes the dome light to remain on and makes it almost impossible to see to back up at night especially with the malfunction of the backup camera. Nothing has happened but as this is apparently a common problem with these cars I am super concerned that it could cause an accident or for someone or something to be ran over backing out of a driveway or parking lot.
Brakes require immense force to stop putting myself and others around me at risk. I have an upcoming appointment for dealer to evaluate No warning lamps
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at undetermined speeds, the brake pedal became firm. The brake pedal was depressed but was slow to respond. There was an abnormal hissing sound detected. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who bled the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but before leaving the dealer, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and provided a case number. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
