A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE DRIVER WAS HOSPITALIZED DUE TO HEAD INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND STATED THAT THE ABS, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, BRAKE LAMPS AND SWITCHES FAILED BECAUSE THE ABS MODULE WAS NOT WORKING. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V156000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTILOCK: CONTROL UNIT/MODULE) HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS AN OPEN MANUFACTURER'S RECALL ON THE VEHICLE BUT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR REPAIRS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE TO THE CONTACT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE THE RECALL LETTER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD POSSIBLY CATCH FIRE AND THE ABS BRAKE WARNING LIGHT COULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED IN THE VEHICLE AND THE TIME FRAME IN WHICH THE VEHICLE COULD BE REPAIRED HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. INADVERTENT ACTIVATION OF ABS SYSTEM WHILE BRAKING DUE TO CRACKED ABS TONE RING ON R PASSENGER SIDE. DEVICE FAILED SECONDARY TO RUSTING COMPONENTS; REPAIR COST ~$200 AT TRUSTED MECHANIC. QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FOR THIS ISSUE FOR SIMILAR CARS AT ANY MILEAGE. THIS DEFECT DOES NOT IMPACT ABILITY TO STOP; HOWEVER, WHEN BRAKING YOU GET A BRAKE/RELEASE CYCLE WHICH FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE FAILING. EVENTUALLY, THE ABS COMPUTER RECOGNIZES THE ERROR, THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATES, AND ABS SYSTEM IS DISABLED, RESUMING NORMAL BRAKING ACTIVITY. *JS
I WENT TO START THE CAR AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND A BAD SMELL. I OPENED THE HOOD AND NOTICED THE AREA UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS ON FIRE. LUCKILY I HAD A SMALL CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PUT IT OUT. THE ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS IS BURNED RIGHT OFF WHERE IT PLUGS INTO THE ANS MODULE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET IT SEEMS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY I HAD TO PUT BRAKE FLUID IN TWICE PER YEAR. I HOPE THE DEALER DOESN'T TRY TO RIP ME OFF AND SAY IT'S NOT COVERED FOR SOME REASON. THEY DO NOT LIKE TO FIX FACTORY RECALLS. *TR

THE TONE RING ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF MY CAR, WHICH IS PART OF THE ABS SYSTEM, CRACKED. THIS APPARENTLY IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES. THIS BREAK, WHICH USUALLY DISABLES THE ABS SYSTEM, DID NOT REGISTER ON MY CAR'S COMPUTER SYSTEM. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE THE PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE RECALL REPAIR WERE NOT AVAILABLE. SHE SPOKE TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND THEY STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE BUT SHE WAS FIRST ON THE LIST TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD TO KEEP HER VEHICLE PARKED AWAY FROM HER HOME BECAUSE BOTH THE RECALL AND THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD POTENTIALLY CATCH ON FIRE. THE DEALER ALSO ADVISED HER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE HOWEVER, IF IT BEGAN TO SMOKE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THE THAT PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE WITHIN THE FIRST QUARTER BUT THEY HAD NOT BECOME AVAILABLE AS OF MAY 2012. THERE WERE NO FAILURES EXPERIENCED WITH THE VEHICLE. AFTER STOPPING TO POSSIBLY TAKE A LEFT TURN, I REALIZED I NEEDED TO GO ONE MORE BLOCK SO I PRESSED THE GAS TO CONTINUE FORWARD. HOWEVER RIGHT AS I DID THAT THE LIGHT TURNED YELLOW SO I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKE INSTEAD. THE CAR SHOT FORWARD AT FULL THROTTLE AND THE CAR WENT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND THE RED LIGHT. THE STREET WAS CLEAR IN FRONT OF US AND I HAD A FULL LONG BLOCK TO TRY TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE'S ACCELERATION. I CALMLY SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS VERY SURPRISED THAT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I STARTED WORRYING AS THE CAR CONTINUED TO SPEED UP. I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND PARK (WHICH NORMALLY ISN'T POSSIBLE). ALL THE WHILE THE VEHICLE SPED UP. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE FOR ALMOST THE WHOLE BLOCK AND WASN'T SLOWING THE VEHICLE AT ALL. I DECIDED THAT SINCE THE TRANSMISSION AND BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONDING, THAT I MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE MY FOOT TO GET UNDER THE GAS PEDAL AND LIFT IT UP (BECAUSE IT FELT FROM THE FULL ACCELERATION LIKE IT WAS STUCK ON THE FLOOR). HOWEVER, THE PEDAL EASILY CAME OFF THE FLOOR BUT WOULD FLOP BACK DOWN AS SOON AS I MOVED MY FOOT OUT FROM UNDER IT. IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT STUCK BY A FOREIGN OBJECT OR FLOOR MAT THOUGH. HAD TO AVOID A PEDESTRIAN THAT WAS CROSSING THE STREET AND THE ROAD AHEAD WAS OBSCURED BECAUSE IT WENT DOWN A STEEP HILL SO I CHOSE TO TURN RIGHT. THE CAR ENDED UP HITTING THE CURB, HITTING 2 SMALL TREES. AND FLIPPING UPSIDE DOWN BEFORE ALSO HITTING A PARKED CAR. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO "REV" AT HIGH SPEEDS, EVEN UPSIDE DOWN, FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE IT FINALLY CUT OFF. MY WIFE AND I WERE VERY LUCKY TO SURVIVE THIS INCIDENT AND TO NOT HAVE INJURED ANY OTHERS IN THE AREA. POSSIBLY PART OF : NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 00V210001 FOR STUCK THROTTLE PROBLEMS. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.

THE DEALER WAS UNCERTAIN OF WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER OF THE PROBLEM. THERE WAS NO FAILURE AT THIS TIME.
THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER CAP LEAKS BRAKE FLUID AND THE FLUID RUNS DOWN THE WIRING AND DOWN THE FIREWALL OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE BRAKE FLUID HAS CORRODED THE PAINT OFF OF THE FIREWALL, AND THEN THE FLUID GETS HOT AND SMOKES. BECAUSE THE FLUID RUNS DOWN THE WIRING, THE VEHICLE IS ALSO HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. FORD HAS A RECALL 11S24 FOR VEHICLES OF THE SAME YEAR WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT THEY SAY THAT OUR VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED EVEN THOUGH THE MASTER CYLINDER CAP CLEARLY LEAKS. THEY WON'T LOOK AT THE VEHICLE UNLESS WE PAY $85 TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED. WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE ADDED TO THE RECALL.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THEY SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER IN MARCH AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE AND THAT THEY WOULD RECEIVE A LETTER WHEN THE PARTS HAD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION FROM THE DEALER REGARDING THE RECALL REPAIRS, WHICH HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
WE BOUGHT OUR 2001 FORD ESCAPE NEW. ON THE 8TH OF DECEMBER, 2011 IT WAS PARKED IN OUR DOUBLE CAR ATTACHED GARAGE. MY SON CAME HOME AROUND 11:30 P.M. GOING THROUGH THE GARAGE AND DID NOT SEE OR SMELL ANYTHING. MY HUSBAND AND I, HIS YOUNGEST SON WERE ASLEEP ALREADY FROM THE FUMES. WE HAD TO BE PULLED OUT OF OUR BEDS BY MY OLDER STEP-SON. HE SAW SMOKE COMING THROUGH THE DOOR GOING TO THE GARAGE. WE HE OPENED THE DOOR HE SAW SMOKE AND FLAMES SHOOTING OUT OF THE FRONT OF THE ESCAPE. HE TRIED TO OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR BUT BY THEN IT WAS TOO LATE. I HAD TO GET MY DOG OUT FROM UNDER THE BED AND ESCAPE THROUGH MY BEDROOM WINDOW. AS A RESULT THE WHOLE HOME WAS BURNED AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY CONSIDERS IT A TOTAL LOSS. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND SIMILAR INCIDENTS FROM OTHER FORD ESCAPE OWNERS. I FORGOT TO SAY THAT WE RECEIVED OUR RECALL ON JANUARY 31ST OF 2012. ABOUT A MONTH TOO LATE TO TELL US NOT TO PARK IT IN OR NEAR A DWELLING. THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST HORRIFIC THING I HAVE EVER GONE THROUGH AND BELIEVE ME, I HAVE GONE THROUGH A WHOLE LOT IN MY LIFE. I WANT TO FILE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AS THAT SEEMS TO ME THAT IS THE ONLY RECOURSE I HAVE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW I WOULD GO ABOUT DOING THIS. *TR
STARTED VEHICLE APPROX 7AM DROVE 40MILES WITH NO EVIDENT PROBLEMS TO VEHICLE. STOPPED VEHICLE FOR APPROX 15MINS, UPON STARTING VEHICLE UP AGAIN HAZARD WARNING ON CONTROL PANAL BEGAN TO FLASH. ABS,AIR BAGS,BRAKE,WERE FLASHING ON/OFF.TURNED CAR OFF,THEN ON AGAIN,WARNING LIGHTS DID COME BACK ON. DROVE APPROX 3MILES,CAR THEN STARTED TO EMIT WHITE SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. IMMADITATLY PULLED OVER ,TURNED OFF ENGINE. SMOKE CONT TO BILLOW FROM UNDER THE HOOD FOR ALEAST 15-20 MINS. *TT

THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESTART AND WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. IT WAS HAPPENED ABOUT A YEAR AGO, ESPECIALLY UNDER THE HOT WEATHER CONDITION. WHEN I FIRST REALIZED THIS PROBLEM, IT WAS VERY HOT SUMMER DAY AND AIR CONDITIONER (AC) WAS ON. I DROVE ABOUT FOR 15-20 MINUTES AND PARKED THE VEHICLE FOR A WHILE (ABOUT 20 MINUTES OR SO). THEN I STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND TRIED TO BACK UP THE VEHICLE FROM THE PARKING SPOT, IT WAS HAPPENED. OPENED DOORS TO MANY TIMES FROM OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE. BOTH DRIVERS SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOORS WILL NOT ENGAGE WHEN HANDLES ARE PULLED UPWARD WHICH BEFORE THE MECHANISM FAILED ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE VEHICLE. NOW WHEN HANDLES ARE ACTIVATED NEITHER DOOR OPERATES AS IT SHOULD. IN OTHER WORDS THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN. AND YES, THE DOORS ARE UNLOCKED AND STILL WILL NOT OPEN. THIS OCCURS ON EACH AND EVERY ENTRY IS TRIED. OR EVERYTIME I TRY TO GET IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONSEQUENCES ARE ENTRY HAS TO BE MADE BY STICKING MY ARM THROUGH A WINDOW THAT IS DOWN AND ENGAGING THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. MY "STICK SHIFT" 2001 FORD ESCAPE TENDS TO STALL WHEN THE CLUTCH IS PUSHED IN, CLEAR TO THE FLOOR. THE ENGINE WOULD DIE AND LEAVE ME STRANDED EVERYWHERE. EVEN IF YOU ARE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 45MPH OR HIGHER, ONCE YOU PUSH IN THE CLUTCH TO CHANGE TO THE LAST GEAR, IT WILL STILL STALL AT HIGH SPEEDS. THE ENGINE COMPLETELY CUTS OFF, BUT ONLY WHEN YOU PUSH IN THE CLUTCH. ONCE THIS HAPPENS, IT WILL NOT STAY RUNNING. IT WILL RESTART FOR JUST A FEW SECONDS, (NOT THE BATTERY OR STARTER) THEN IT WILL DIE AGAIN, REPEATEDLY. IT WOULD GET TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WITH NO LUCK. THEY COULD NOT "DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM". ONCE, THE CAR COOLS OFF, THEN THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS. THERE IS A VALVE THE HEATS UP AND GETS STUCK OPEN. IF THE VALVE COOLS DOWN, IT CAN CLOSE AND THEN IT IS FINE. NOW, IF I MAKE ALOT OF SHORT STOPS (ERRANDS) WHERE THE CAR DOESN'T GET A CHANCE TO COOL OFF, SAY TEN MINUTES OR LESS, THEN IT WON'T STAY STARTED. IF YOU TURN OVER THE IGNITION, IT WILL START, BUT IMMEDIATELY DIES. HOWEVER, IF I LET THE CAR SIT FOR SAY A COUPLE OF HOURS, SAY 4-6 HOURS. IT WILL START BACK UP JUST FINE AND STAY RUNNING LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. THE KEY TIP IS: DON'T PUT ETHANOL IN THE GAS TANK. IF I BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE GAS, THE PROBLEM TENDS TO CLEAR UP ON IT'S OWN. IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN THIS SUMMER. ONCE I CHANGED TO THE PRIMO (MOST EXPENSIVE) GAS, IT HAS NOW STOPPED WITHOUT TAKING IT TO A DEALERSHIP. PERSONALLY, I THINK GAS CONTAINING ETHANOL HAS TOO MUCH MOISTURE IN IT CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. EVEN THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THIS FORD ESCAPE CAR IS NOT DESIGNED TO RUN ON "ETHANOL" PRODUCTS. THIS ALL MOSTLY HAPPENS WHEN IT IS VERY HOT AND HUMID OUTSIDE. BOUGHT MY VEHICLE IN JANUARY OF 2010, COMPLAINED OF NOISE IN FRONT END, HAD IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED IT FROM TWO DIFFERENT TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE, AND WITHIN 5 MONTHS, THE FRAME BUSTED THROUGH IN FRONT ON PASSENGER SIDE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 82,000 MILES ON IT AND MY MAJOR COMPLAINT IS THAT IT WAS IN THE GARAGE AND THEY INSPECTED THE NOISE CHANGED PARTS ON THAT SIDE AND THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF THE FRAME BEING COMPROMISED, AND THERE IS NO WAY THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE SEEN THAT THERE IS A COMPLETE BREAK IN THE FRAME . EVERY MECHANIC I CALLED CANT BELIEVE IT. NOW I HAVE A VEHICLE THAT IS TOTALED AND THREE YEARS TO PAY ON IT. I ALSO HAD A YEARLY INSPECTION JUST TWO MONTHS PREVIOUSLY. IS THERE A RECALL ON THE FRAME OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE? THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ON MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE V6 XLT SUDDENLY DOWNSHIFTED INTO SECOND GEAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH. I EXITED AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE EXIT, AND DROVE THE VEHICLE BACK HOME IN SECOND GEAR. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE TRANSMISSION EXHIBITED NO SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF ANYTHING BEING WRONG WITH IT. AT PRESENT, SECOND GEAR IS THE ONLY GEAR THAT STILL WORKS IN THE TRANSMISSION. IT NOW SITS INOPERABLE IN MY DRIVEWAY BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE $3000-$4000 REQUIRED TO GET IT FIXED. AFTER MUCH INTERNET RESEARCH, I'VE FOUND THAT TRANSMISSION FAILURES IN THIS VEHICLE AND LATER YEARS OF THE SAME MODEL ARE QUITE COMMON, WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE EXPERIENCING MULTIPLE TRANSMISSION FAILURES ON THE SAME VEHICLE. A COMMON CONSENSUS, IS THAT THE FAILURES ARE DUE TO A FOUR CYLINDER TRANSMISSION BEING INSTALLED IN A HIGHER TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER V6 MODEL. FORD MUST BE FORCED TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND FIX THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ONCE AND FOR ALL. IT'S REALLY UNFAIR THAT THE CONSUMER IS REQUIRED TO PAY HUGE SUMS OF MONEY TO REPAIR SHOPS TO GET PROBLEMS FIXED THAT SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE RESIDENCE GARAGE, HE SMELLED AN ODOR OF BURNING WIRES. ALSO, THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE EMITTING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND INTENSE SPARKS FROM THE ABS MODULE AS A RESULT OF THE MELTING WIRING HARNESS. THERE WERE NO FLAMES. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND ABS WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE ABS MODULE WAS DISCONNECTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THERE WAS A RECALL 07V156000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTILOCK: CONTROL UNIT/MODULE) RELATED TO THE FAILURE; THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 103,000.
