TL* - THE CONTACT WAS STOPPED HE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, ANOTHER VEHICLE HIT HIM IN THE REAR. THE SECOND VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY, BUT THE CRASH RESULTED IN THE DRIVERS SEAT UNEXPECTEDLY RECLINING TO A HORIZONTAL POSITION, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO ADJUST THE SEAT AFTER THE IMPACT. THE PASSENGER SEAT REMAINED IN POSITION. THE DRIVER SUFFERED INJURIES. *NM THE CONSUMER STATED HE LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING. UPDATED 02/22/07. *JB
VEHICLE IS 2001 FORD ESCAPE XLT 4X4. FULL TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND STALL IN OVERDRIVE ON INTERSTATE WITH NO ADVANCED WARNING. VEHICLE HAS UNDER 70,000 MILES. NO WRECK INVOLVED ONLY BY MIRACLE. COST OF TRANSMISSION IS OVER $4,000. HAPPENED TO FAST AND WITH UNDER 100,000 MILES HAS GOT TO BE A DEFECT. *JB
FORD ESCAPE 2001 MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND BRAKES FAILED CAUSING ACCIDENT WHEN I TOTALLY LOST MY BRAKES. 1 DAY AFTER FORD DEALERSHIP REPLACED MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. FORD HAS FAULTY MASTER BRAKE PARTS. *TR
MY COOLANT LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ENOUGH COOLANT. *JB
MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR STUCK AND COULD NOT BE OPENED AND HAD TO BE REPAIRED AT A COST OF $350. BOTH BACK DOORS ARE STUCK CLOSED AND CAN NOT BE OPENED. NOW THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR IS STUCK CLOSED AND CAN NOT BE OPENED. MY SON BROKE HIS ARM AND INJURED HIS LEG AND HAD TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. WE HAD TO GET HIM OUT OF THE CAR THROUGH THE WINDOW! AS THE DOOR SUDDENLY WOULD NOT OPEN. THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE. THE REPAIR BILL IS ESTIMATED AT ANOTHER $350.00. IN ADDITION, MY REAR HATCH DOOR REFUSED TO OPEN THE OTHER DAY WHILE I WAS HAVING THE SHOCKS REPAIRED. THE MECHANICS FINALLY GOT IT OPEN. I FEAR THAT SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN AND EMERGENCY PERSONNEL WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET IN TO THE CAR AND WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT. *NM
THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR NO LONGER OPENS WITH THE OUTSIDE LATCH HANDLE. WHILE IT OPENS FROM THE INSIDE, THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE FAILED INEXPLICABLY. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS YET. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE DOOR LATCHES WERE FAULTY ON BOTH FRONT DOORS. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNAL PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT ABLE TO OPEN THE FRONT DOORS FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE CONTACT HAD TO ENTER FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE AND OPEN THE DOORS FROM THE INSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE DOOR LATCHES, AND NOTIFIED THE CONTACT THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO DETERMINED THE ALTERNATOR WAS BURNT AND WAS REPLACED. NINE MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND A BURNING SMELL WAS OBSERVED. IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO BUILT A CASING AROUND THE ALTERNATOR TO STOP THE BURNING. TWO YEARS LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER, THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED. TWO YEARS LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. WHEN IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, IT WAS DETERMINED THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS WAS CORRODED AND RUSTED AND THE HARNESS WAS REPLACED.
2001 ESCAPE HAS HAD THREE REPAIRS IN A 6 MONTH TIME FRAME DO TO PROBLEMS WITH THE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLIES. *TS THE SPARKS PLUG SHOT OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD SUDDENLY THREE TIMES. *NM
BOTH BACK DOORS OF MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE: I DO NOT USE MY BACK DOORS VERY OFTEN SINCE THERE ARE ONLY 2 MEMBERS OF MY HOUSEHOLD. I UNLOCKED THEN TRIED TO OPEN BOTH BACK DOORS, BOTH WERE STUCK SHUT, THE HANDLES WERE LOOSE ON THE OUTSIDE. IT WAS NOT A FREEZING COLD NIGHT. I LOCKED AND UNLOCKED THE DOORS A BUNCH OF TIMES, THEN TRIED TO OPEN AGAIN. THEY FINALLY OPENED, BUT WOULD NOT LATCH SHUT. THE OUTSIDE HANDLE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ATTACHED TO THE IN DOOR MECHANISM. MY HUSBAND FINALLY GOT THE DOORS TO STAY SHUT. I HAVE NOT OPENED THEM SINCE. I AM AFRAID THEY MIGHT OPEN WHILE DRIVING! *NM
MY DAUGHTER WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR CRASH WHICH RESULTED IN HER 2001 FORD ESCAPE BEING TOTALED AND AT NO TIME DID THE AIR BAGS DEPLOY. SHE WENT ACROSS THREE LANES OF HIGHWAY HIT THE GUARD RAIL WENT BACK ACROSS THE THREE LANES AND HIT THE OTHER GUARD RAIL. SHE LIVES TO TELL HER STORY. SHE NOW HAS PAIN IN HER CERVICAL SPINE RESULTING IN HER SEEING A DOCTOR ON A REGULAR BASIS. *JB
TRANSMISSION IN MY FORD ESCAPE XLT HAS HAD A VIBRATION FOR 2 YEARS OR SO AND I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS NOW BAD! I SPOKE WITH A FRIEND AT APPLE FORD IN LYNCHBURG VIRGINIA AND HE TOLD ME THAT THE FACTORY RECOMMENDS A FLUID FLUSH FIRST AND IT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM! TORQUE CONVERTER MUST BE REPLACED! IT SEEMS LIKE TO ME THAT THE FACTORY IS DEFINITELY TRYING TO PATCH THE PROBLEM BY FLUSHING THE SYSTEM AND USING A NEW TYPE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID TO MASK THE PROBLEM SO THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY BEFORE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILS AGAIN! *NM
ON FRIDAY 8/11/06 I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK DRIVING MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE (WITH 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION). I WAS GOING AT AROUND 45 MPH IN A BUSY ROAD. SUDDENLY THERE WAS A TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND MY VEHICLE CAME TO AN INSTANT TOTAL STOP. THERE WAS SCREECHING OF TIRES AND I WAS VERY FORTUNATE NOT TO CRASH AND THAT THE VEHICLES BEHIND ME DID NOT HIT ME. IT WAS ALSO A MATTER OF LUCK THAT THERE WERE NO PERSONS KILLED NOR INJURED. MY CAR WAS STUCK ON GEAR AND COULD NOT BE PUSHED FORWARD OR BACKWARD, SO IT HAD TO BE TOWED WITH A PLATFORM TRUCK. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW IN 2001 AND HAVE BEEN THE SOLE OWNER. I HAVE GIVEN THIS VEHICLE ALL OF ITS RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE EVERY 3,000 MILES. I INFORMED FORD MOTOR COMPANY ABOUT THIS FAILURE AND THEY WERE NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. I THINK THE GENERAL PUBLIC HAS TO BE INFORMED ABOUT THIS SAFETY RISK WITH 2001 FORD ESCAPES. *NM
2001 XLT - HISSING NOISE WHEN PRESSING THE BRAKES. IF TAPPED THE SOUND DECREASES. THIS JUST STARTED AT 75K. WILL NEED TO GET BOOSTER CHANGED. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS TO ANY OF MY OTHER VEHICLES. *NM
THIRD TIME MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS LEAKED!!! FIRST TIME WAS IN 2003, SECOND TIME IN 2005, AND THIS TIME IN LATE 2006. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES SUDDEN ACCELERATION FROM 0-45 MPH AFTER RELEASING THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE IN THE STOPPED POSITION. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES INCREASED BRAKING AND JOLTS FORWARD WHEN BRAKING IS APPLIED. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PLACED IN PARK, THE ENGINE REVS ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE MUST BE TURNED OFF FOR THE ENGINE TO QUIT REVVING. THIS PROBLEM WAS INITIALLY SPORADIC, BUT IS NOW GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND OCCURS MORE OFTEN. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ACCELERATOR CABLE BUT THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED. AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE THE SPEED CONTROL SERVO. THERE IS AN NHTSA RECALL, #00V210001, REGARDING THE: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.
DOOR HANDLE ON OCCASION GETS STUCK. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE PRETENSIONER IN THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. UPDATED 07/03/06.*JB
I RECEIVED A WARNING LIGHT ON THE CONTROL PANEL OF THE CAR. SUBSEQUENTLY FOUND THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FEEDBACK EGR (DPFE) SENSOR HAD FAILED. I SEE THAT MANY OF THE 2001 & 2002 FORD ESCAPES HAVE THIS FAILURE. SOMETHING WAS CHANGED TO RESOLVE THIS AS 2003 MODEL DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE PROBLEM (SOURCE AUTOS.MSN.COM). WHY SHOULD I PAY $450 TO CORRECT A MANUFACTURER FAULT. *NM
2001 FORD ESCAPE TAILGATE WILL NOT UNLOCK. TRIED 2 DIFFERENT KEY FAUBS AND TRIED UNLOCK FROM THE DRIVER DOOR. THERE IS NO PLACE TO UNLOCK WITH A KEY, THERE IS NO PLACE TO OPEN FROM INSIDE THE CARGO AREA. I CHECKED THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR A LOCATION OF A MANUAL RELEASE AND THERE IS NONE. I CALLED FORD MOTOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND THEY SEARCHED THE DATABASE FOR A MANUAL RELEASE AND COULD NOT LOCATE ANY INFORMATION. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN IF YOU WERE IN AN ACCIDENT OR SITUATION THAT WARRANTED EXITING THE VEHICLE FROM THE BACK. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONT END COLLISION AND NEITHER FRONTAL AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 10-20 MPH. THE SEAT BELTS WERE IN USE AT THE TIME. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES. THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT FILED.
THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED ON 05/01/06 AFTER DRIVING AT LEAST 30 MIN TO 45 MIN. AT A SPEED OF AROUND 50 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED A LOOSE GAS CAP. ON 5/22/06 AFTER DRIVING AGAIN AT LEAST 30 MIN TO 45 MIN. AFTER RETURNING HOME AND BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY MY ESCAPE STALLED AND WOULD NOT START, AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR IT STARTED AGAIN DID NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. THE THIRD INCIDENT HAPPENED MAY 30 AFTER DRIVING 30 MIN TO 45 MIN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED THE VAPOR MANAGEMENT VALVE WHICH IS STILL NOT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM, SO THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT REPLACING THE FUEL TANK. THE DEALER HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL, BUT AFTER FIVE YEARS I WOULD THINK I WOULD NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE FOR TWO DAYS WHEN IT SUDDENLY ERUPTED IN FLAMES DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CONTACTED AND CONCLUDED THE FIRE ORIGINATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE DEALER WAS ALERTED, BUT DID NOT INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE SMOKE DAMAGE TO THE HOME AND NO ONE SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE ONLY PROBLEM PRESENT WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON WAS BROKEN AND THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CRUISE STOPPED WORKING TWO YEARS AGO.*AK
STOP RIGHT IN STREET AND NO WAY COULD MAKE IT GO IF SOMEONE WAS BEHIND ME WE WOULD OF BEEN HIT. *JB
I SEE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS OF REPLACING THE EGR VALVE ON THEIR 2001 FORD ESCAPE. I REPLACED MINE TWICE AND THE DPFE SENSOR TWICE AND JUST HAD THE COMPUTER REPLACED AT JUST UNDER 42000 MILES. THERE IS TOO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODEL YEAR AND THE WARRANTY IS UP.. THEY (FORD) MAKE SO THESE CHEAP PARTS LAST UNTIL WARRANTY EXPIRES, SO THE CONSUMER HAS TO PAY I BOUGHT FORDS ALL MY LIFE BUT I'M HAVING SECOND THOUGHT AFTER THIS BUY. *NM
I NOTICED A 2001 FORD ESCAPE WITH A BRAKE HISSING PROBLEM AT 74K I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AT 40K. I'VE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR THAT I AM CONSIDERING NOT TO EVER BY A FORD VEHICLE AGAIN. THEY SHOULD HAVE RECALLS ON THESE SO THE CONSUMER DOES NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKES. *NM
I OWN A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE LOCKS ON THE HATCH DOOR AND HATCH GLASS WINDOW DO NOT OPEN CONSISTENTLY, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT IS HOT OUTSIDE (I LIVE IN FL). THERE ARE NO OTHER WAYS TO OPEN THE DOOR OR WINDOW AS THERE ARE NO HANDLES ON THE INSIDE AND NO KEY LOCK ON THE OUTSIDE. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS. I WOULD THINK THIS WOULD BE SOME TYPE OF SAFETY ISSUE. FROM BLOGS I SEE THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THE ACTUATOR MAY BE AT FAULT. *TR
I WAS WRITING THIS FOR MY SISTER WHO IS NO LONGER HERE. SHE DROVE A 2001 FORD ESCAPE GOING 60 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THE PEOPLE IN FRONT OF HER STOPPED AND SHE REAR ENDED THEM. HER CAR FLIPPED SEVERAL TIMES AND SHE WAS EJECTED. ALTHOUGH THE STATE TROOPERS SAID SHE WASN'T WEARING HER SEAT BELT SHE CLEARLY HAD A 2" BY 4" ABRASION ON HER LEFT SHOULDER EXACTLY THE SIZE AND LOCATION THAT HER SEAT BELT WOULD HAVE BEEN. THE SUV WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED, NOT A PANEL ON IT WASN'T SMASHED - AND YET THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T GO OFF. IT WAS SO BAD THAT I WENT BY THE ACCIDENT AND DIDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE THE CAR UNTIL A POLICE OFFICER CALLED OUR HOUSE AND TOLD US ABOUT THE ACCIDENT AND LOCATION. MY SISTER WAS 22 YEARS OLD WITH A HUSBAND AND A DAUGHTER AND NOW SHE IS NO LONGER HERE. I REALIZE THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE SEAT BELT, WE GOT A LETTER 2 MONTHS AFTER THE ACCIDENT EVEN THOUGH THE RECALL WAS 2 YEARS BEFORE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE AIRBAGS THOUGH. R.I.P. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE HAD A ROUGH IDLE AND STALLED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION; HOWEVER THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THE VEHICLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. THE VEHICLE STALLED AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PCM BUT THIS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER STATED THE WIRING UNDER THE DASH NEEDED REPLACED. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL 04V165000, REGARDING THE POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: CONTROL MODULE PCM AND A NHTSA TSB ITEM #617976, REGARDING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: WIRING UNDER DASH. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL AND TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN; HOWEVER IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE HAD AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. UPDATED 04/11/06. *JB
EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE FAILURE ON 2001 FORD ESCAPE. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED INTO OVERDRIVE AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 04V165000 WHICH RELATES TO THE POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: CONTROL MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH THE "BRAKE" WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THERE WAS PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY A LOW POWER RESPONSE. ALSO THERE WAS BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE. THE FAILURES PROGRESSED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS EXCLUDED FROM RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07E023000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER). NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
MY VIN# FOR MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE IS NOT LISTED UNDER THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL RECALL. HOWEVER, I AM AND HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE FOR SOME TIME NOW. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR 9 HOURS AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE FIRE MARSHAL STATED THE DAMAGE WAS TOO EXTENSIVE TO DETERMINE WHERE THE FIRE STARTED. MOST OF THE FIRE DAMAGE WAS UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVER SIDE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DEEMED THE VEHICLE TOTALED. *NM
I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION OF MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS ALSO LOCKED. I HAD TO HAVE A LOCKSMITH COME TO START IT. THE LOCKSMITH SAID THERE HAVE BEEN MANY SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH ALL FORD IGNITIONS. I HAD THE IGNITION CYLINDER REPLACED AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER SAID HE WAS UNAWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS RELATED TO IGNITIONS IN THE ESCAPE. I LEARNED FROM A FOCUS OWNER THAT THE FOCUS CARS HAD BEEN RECALLED IN LATE 2000/EARLY 2001 FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. I LATER LEARNED BY CALLING ANOTHER FORD DEALERSHIP THAT THE SAME PART IS USED FOR BOTH THE FOCUS AND THE ESCAPE. WHY HAVEN'T THE ESCAPES BEEN RECALLED? *NM
IAC KEPT GOING BAD. CAR WOULD STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING, I ALMOST HAD 2 WRECKS. I HAD TO GET THIS FIXED DUE TO THE DANGER OF DRIVING. OLD PART IS NOT AVAILABLE. *JB
FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW, MY 2001 V6 AUTOMATIC FORD ESCAPE HAS HAD A PROBLEM TRYING TO SHIFT INTO THE LAST GEAR AT 45-50 MPH. THE VEHICLE'S RPM'S WILL BE NEAR 3000 FOR A GOOD 30 SECONDS BEFORE IT FINALLY ENGAGES INTO THE NEXT GEAR. THE PROBLEM IS DEFINITELY WORSE ON COLDER DAYS, BUT IT IS STILL CERTAINLY NOTICEABLE ON WARMER DAYS TOO. THERE IS NO SMELL EMANATING FROM THE VEHICLE. I HAD A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FLUSH AT ABOUT 40K. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 65K ON IT. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SIMILAR REPORTS FILED AND IF SO, COULD YOU PLEASE NOTIFY ME? THANK YOU. *JB

DT: AFTER THE CONTACT WAS PULLING OUT FROM A HIGHWAY ON OCTOBER 11, 2005 THE VEHICLE ACTED LIKE IT WAS LOSING POWER. IT WOULD SLOW DOWN, AND THEN IT WOULD ONLY GO LESS THAN 10 MPH. WHEN THIS OCCURRED THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT STARTED FLASHED. THREE OF THE CHILDREN IN THE CAR SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SEVEN MONTHS BEFORE SHE HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS AT THAT TIME. THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY SAID THAT THE COMPUTER SHOWED THE CODE P0733, THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, AND IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT FOUND THAT THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. *AK.
I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE LIFTGATE LATCH NOT LOCKING PROPERLY FOR NEARLY A YEAR. I FOUND ON YOUR WEBSITE UNDER "RECALLS" THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE MODEL (FORD ESCAPE 2001). I CALLED MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT IS NOT FOUND UNDER THE FORD OASIS OF RECALLS. I'M CONCERNED AFTER READING THE INFORMATION, YOU PROVIDED ON YOUR WEBSITE, THAT THIS COULD CAUSE THE LIFTGATE TO OPEN DURING A CRASH. BRAKE FLUID FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER LEAKED ON A WIRING HARNESS AND CAUSED MULTIPLE SYSTEM FAILURES INCLUDING THE ABS SYSTEM, THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG, AND THE DISPLAY ON THE RADIO. THE SERVICE TECH INDICATED THAT I WAS LUCKY I AVOIDED A FIRE. APPROACHING HIWAY CONSTRUCTION WITH FLAGMAN AND ABOUT 10 CARS STOPPED, WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE, CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO DISENGAGE, THROTTLE STUCK WIDE-OPEN. I TRIED TO TURN IT OFF WITH ON/OFF BUTTON ON STEERING WHEEL BUT NO RESULT,APPROACHING STOPPED LINE OF CARS AT FULL THROTTLE, TOWING CAMPING TRAILER. FINALLY, I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR/TRAILER, ENGINE RACING MAX REVS AND MAKING STRANGE NOISE, FALTERING AS IT MIGHT WHEN THE FUEL MIXTURE WAS TOO RICH. I THEN TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, AND UPON INSPECTION UNDER THE HOOD AND LOCATING WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL, WE JIGGLED A CABLE GOING INTO IT AND HEARD A CLUNK WITHIN. I THEN STARTED THE CAR AND IT RAN NORMALLY. CONTINUED TRIP, JUST DIDN'T USE CRUISE CONTROL !! UPON RETURNING FROM TRIP, I CALLED MY FORD DEALER IN DURANGO, CO AND WAS TOLD TO CALL CUSTOMER RELATIONS. I DID SO TWICE, AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY CAR. I THEN SEARCHED THE NHTSA WEBSITE, AND FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL ON 2001 ESCAPE FOR THIS VERY PROBLEM (SAFETY RECALL 00S18, NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID# 00V210001), BUT MY CAR'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED! I SUBMIT THAT THIS INCIDENT ILLUSTRATES THAT THIS VIN (AND MAYBE MANY OTHERS) SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN FIXED (I JUST DON'T USE THE CRUISE), SO I STILL HAVE THE OLD PART, PENDING RESOLUTION OF THIS ISSUE. THANK YOU. *NM
DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE THAT EXPERIENCED A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT FLASHED. THE CONSUMER EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN THE VEHICLE REVVED, BUT WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO ENGAGE SECOND GEAR AND DRIVE 10 MILES HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING OR LURCHING BACK AND FORTH ON THE DRIVE HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK WAS PERFORMED AND SUGGESTED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER COULD OFFER NO EXPLANATION OTHER THAN IT MAY BE THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THIS HAPPENED AT 71,000 MILES. THIS WAS THE SECOND TRANSMISSION. THE EXACT SAME THING HAD HAPPENED AT 49, 000 MILES. THE CONSUMER SPLIT THE COST WITH FORD WITH THE FIRST TRANSMISSION. THE SECOND TRANSMISSION HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED. THE CONSUMER WAS NEGOTIATING WITH FORD ABOUT THE PROBLEM. *AK

WHEN DRIVING, THE VEHICLE DIED, POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS HARD TO CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT KEEP A IDLING. . CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A TREAD SEPARATION ON ALL FOUR TIRES. *TS EACH TIRE WAS REPLACED. CONTINENTAL REJECTED THE CONSUMERS CLAIM STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A REPAIRED PUNCTURE IN THE TIRE. *SC

WE ARE A LEASING COMPANY AND HAVE HAD THREE (3) 2001 FORD ESCAPES TO DATE THAT HAVE HAD FAILED TRANSMISSIONS. FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR ATTEMPTS TO GET REIMBURSEMENT.
IN MAY 2005 THE ACCELERATOR CABLE STUCK WIDE OPEN ON MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE (V-6 ENGINE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) THIS HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN I PUNCHED DOWN ON THE PEDAL VERY HARD. THERE IS A PLASTIC COVER ON TOP OF THE ENGINE THAT MUST BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO SEE WHERE THE CABLES HOOK UP TO THE THROTTLE BODY. I REMOVED THIS TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY OR THE CABLE THAT WAS STUCK. AS I WAS TAKING IT OFF THE CABLE BECAME UNSTUCK ON IT'S OWN SO I WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. AT THAT POINT I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY DID NOTHING. ON 8/10/05 MY WIFE PUSHED DOWN HARD ON THE GAS PEDAL WHILE MERGING INTO FREEWAY TRAFFIC. THE ACCELERATOR STUCK WIDE OPEN AGAIN AND SHE FOUND HERSELF GOING ABOUT 100 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY. FINALLY SHE PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, COASTED TO THE BERM AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK. SINCE THE DEALER COULDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME I DECIDED TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN MYSELF. AGAIN I TOOK THE PLASTIC COVER OFF THE TOP OF THE ENGINE AND ONCE AGAIN THE CABLE BECAME UNSTUCK. THIS MADE ME SUSPECT THAT THE PLASTIC COVER MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE PROBLEM. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HOUSING HAD BROKEN RIGHT BEFORE THE PART THAT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS CREATES A SITUATION THAT CAN CAUSE THE CRUISE CABLE TO PIVOT UP AND WEDGE AGAINST THE PLASTIC ENGINE COVER DURING HARD ACCELERATION INSTEAD OF IT MOVING IN ITS HOUSING LIKE IT SHOULD THUS CAUSING THE THROTTLE TO STICK WIDE OPEN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN A FEW TIMES SO I AM CONFIDENT THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE PROBLEM. I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALER BUT THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO WORK ON THE CAR FOR OVER A WEEK SO I WENT TO THE PARTS DEPT. ORDERED THE PART (UNDER $30) WENT HOME AND PUT IT ON MYSELF (TAKES LESS THAN 5 MINUTES). THE CAR IS FIXED NOW. *NM
