WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, VEHICLE STALLED UNEXPECTEDLY, CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER, ASSISTED BRAKES AND STEERING. DEALERSHIP EXAMINED VEHICLE AND REPLACED AN UNKNOWN RELAY TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. AFTER THE SERVICE WAS PERFORMED, ENGINE STALLED AGAIN WHILE TRAVELING LESS THAN 40 MPH. THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LEAKING DUE TO RACK AND PINION FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION. *YH
VEHICLE SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY LOST POWER AND ENGINE FAILED WHILE OPERATING ON MAJOR WASHINGTON D.C. INTERSTATE. VEHICLE COULD NOT BE RESTARTED ALTHOUGH AMPLE POWER APPEARS TO BE AVAILABLE FOR ELECTRICAL DEMANDS. VEHICLE TOWED TO OWNERS HOME.
ENGINE FAILED WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 MPH (IN CRUISE CONTROL) ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. DEALER DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS SEIZED ENGINE. FAILURE WAS SUDDEN AND WITHOUT WARNING. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 45-50 MPH VEHICLE WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF, ALL LIGHTS WENT OUT; HOWEVER, LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD CAME ON. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER COULD FIND THE CAUSE. *AK
PURCHASED 2002 MODEL IN 10/01. THREE WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE STEERING WHEEL WAS SHAKING AND LOOSE. TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER, THE BOLT IN THE STEERING WHEEL CAME UNSECURED. THIS WAS NOT DUE TO CUSTOMER ERROR. IN 2002 THE UPHOLSTERY OVER THE CARGO SPACE WAS HANGING DOWN FROM THE CEILING AND THE FOAM INSULATION AROUND THE DOOR (REAR PASSENGER SIDE) WAS NOT SECURE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THE UPHOLSTERY WAS FIXED BUT THE INSULATION WAS NOT. AT THAT TIME I ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE VEHICLE IDLING WHEN IN NEUTRAL. IT WAS ALSO VIBRATING AND SKIPPING WHEN IN NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WAS ALLEGEDLY CHECKED WITH NOT PROBLEMS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO HAVE THE INSULATION REPAIRED AND THE IDLING/VIBRATION CHECKED. THE INSULATION WAS REPAIRED. THE MECHANIC STATED THE CAR WAS FINE. IDLING/VIBRATION AND SKIPPING STILLS CONTINUES TODAY. ALSO THE VEHICLE SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR AND CRASHED INTO A POLE. THE CAR WAS NOT ON AND THE DOORS WERE LOCKED. I TRIED TO UNLOCK IT WITH THE REMOTE KEY. IT CONTINUED TO MAKE A CLICKING SOUND BUT THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. THE LOCKS WOULD SOMETIMES JAM. HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THESE PROBLEMS. NOT CORRECTION. AT THIS TIME I AM COLLECTING ALL DOCUMENTATION AND SUBMITTING A LETTER TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY.
2002 FORD ESCAPE XLT - OUR VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS STALLS ON THE EXPRESSWAY. IT TAKES OUT POWER STEERING AND THE BRAKES. EACH TIME IT STARTS BACK UP AFTER I CAN GET THE VEHICLE STOPPED.
PE 01 043/ENGINE STALLING:CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE STALLS INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING, VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. DEALER UPDATED COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO FAILURES SINCE SERVICE, BUT DIFFICULT TO KNOW IF FIXED DUE TO INTERMITTENT NATURE OF PROBLEM. *TT
2002 FORD ESCAPE XLT HAS NOW STALLED THREE TIMES RESULTING IN LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKES---HAVING INVESTIGATED THIS VEHICLE ON MY OWN I'VE FOUND SEVERAL OTHER IDENTICAL CASES. FORD NEEDS TO FIND OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THESE FAILURES AND RECALL THESE VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED.*AK
ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING DOWNHILL. WAS EITHER BRAKING OR DECELERATING BY LETTING UP ON GAS. CHECK ENGINE, AIRBAG, AND POSSIBLY OIL LIGHTS CAME ON. POWER STEERING AND BRAKES FAILED. WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND STOP VEHICLE WITH HAND BRAKE. SHIFTED VEHICLE INTO PARK AND RESTARTED. HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR APPROX. 1/2 HOUR (15 MILES). WEATHER WAS COOL AND CLEAR.
BRAND NEW 2002 FORD ESCAPE XLT AUTOMATIC 4X2 STALLED 5 TIMES DRIVING IT HOME FROM THE DEAER AFTER BUYING IT. LOST POWER STEERING AND BOWER BRAKES AT OVER 35 MPH. DEALER DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM IS AT ALL. *AK
2002 ESCAPE STALLED WHILE COASTING 35-40 MPH DOWN-HILL. ENGINE, BATTERY AND OIL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON DASH. LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BREAKS. VEHICLE STARTED UP IMMEDIATELY AFTER PLACING IN "PARK" POSITION. DEALERSHIP TESTED VEHICLE AND FOUND NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. VEHICLE WAS 3 DAYS OLD, 164 MILES ON ODOMETER. THIS VEHICLE IS THE REPLACEMENT TO 2001 ESCAPE THAT STALLED 4 TIMES WHILE COASTING. DEALER REPLACED FUEL PUMP, ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) RELAY ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS. VEHICLE STILL STALLED. DEALERSHIP VERY "PRO-ACTIVE" AND WILLING TO ASSIST BY OFFERING RENTAL CAR WHILE TESTING BOTH VEHICLES.
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PASS A CAR ON THE INTERSTATE, ENGINE DIED. THICK WHITE SMOKE ENGULFED THE BACK WINDOW FROM THE EXHAUST. WAS MOMENTARILY UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING IN BACK ON THE CAR. I LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES . I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND WHEN DEALER LOOKED AT IT WAS "LOCKED UP" THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED.*AK
ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED COMPLETELY, RESTARTING IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. ALL POWER WAS LOST AND FLAMES WERE SHOOTING FROM REAR OF VEHICLE. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THIS CREATED AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. *YH
AT 300 MILES THE VEHICLE SURGED AND HESITATED FREQUENTLY. DEALER REPLACED TRANSMISSION. 1 WEEK LATER AFTER COMING TO A STOP, CONSUMER APPLIED ACCELERATOR, VEHICLE HESITATED. CONSUMER THEN APPLIED GAS PEDAL HARDER, AND VEHICLE SURGED TO 20 MPH AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. NO INJURIES, DAMAGE TO VEHICLE WAS $ 2200.00.*AK
AFTER STOPPING AT A LIGHT, I ACCELERATED TO APPROXIMATELY 30-35 MPH WHEN CAR STALLED. ALL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. CAR RESTARTED, WE TOOK TO THE DEALER. THEY ADVISED US RIGHT AWAY THAT FORD IS AWARE THAT THESE ESCAPES HAVE THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM- THEY JUST QUIT RUNNING FOR NO REASON. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT OK. BECAUSE I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR, AS THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE NOT KNOWING IF CAR WILL STALL UNEXPECTEDLY GOING DOWN A FREEWAY OR IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION, DISCUSSED RETURNING CAR TO DEALER. THEY ADVISE THAT FORD WILL NOT DO A RECALL AT THIS TIME BUT ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS BEING REPORTED. THEY HAVE NO SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AS THEY CAN'T FIND OUT WHY IT HAPPENS ON SOME ESCAPES BUT NOT OTHERS. UNLESS THEY BUY THE CAR BACK, WE TAKE A HUGE LOSS AS IT AS DEPRECIATED IN THE 30 DAYS WE HAVE OWNED IT, PLUS OUR SALES TAX AND LICENSING COSTS. FROM WHAT WE ARE TOLD, FORD HAS NO INTENTION OF RECALLING. MY QUESTION AND COMPLAINT, IS, IF THEY KNOW THAT THE CARS STALL AND THEY CANT EXPLAIN WHY, AND THEREFORE CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, HOW CAN IT BE LEGAL FOR THEM TO LEAVE US IN THIS POSITION WHERE WE HAVE TO FEAR FOR OUR LIVES EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE CAR. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DON'T HAVE TO BUY THESE CARS BACK AND COMPENSATE FOR THE SALES TAX EXPENSE AS WELL. HOW CAN THEY BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THESE CARS ON THE ROAD, WHEN WE COULD BE KILLED IF THE NEXT TIME IT STALLS WE ARE GOING 70 MPH WITH A SEMI IN BACK OF US THAT HITS US WHEN THE CAR STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. OR, WE ARE STARTING TO COMPLETE A TURN WHEN THE CAR STOPS AND THE ONCOMING CAR CAN'T STOP IN TIME. THE DEALER HAS TOLD US WE CAN COMPLAIN TO A TOLL FREE NUMBER AT FORD BUT BASICALLY THEY WILL DO NOTHING FOR US. PLEASE HELP US.*AK
CONSUMER STATED THAT WHITE GELATINOUS MATERIAL WAS LEAKING FROM MULTIPLE AREAS OF VEHICLES LOCKS AND CREVICES ONTO THE INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY OF VEHICLE, DEALER STATED THAT LUBRICANT WAS APPLIED TO THE VARIOUS INTERNAL LOCKING MECHANISMS AND THAT THE EXCESS WAS SETTLING BY LEAKING OUT OF CREVICES AND SEAMS, DEALER WIPED OFF EXCESS LUBRICANT. *TT

VEHICLE STALLS WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROX 40 MPH. DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT PROBLEM AFTER 4 REPAIR ATTEMPTS. HAS INVOLVED MANUFACTURERS FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER WHO ALSO HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT PROBLEM. MANUFACTURER CLAIMS THEY ARE GOING TO REPURCHASE VEHICLE DUE TO STALLING PROBLEM.
I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 90 DAYS. 30 OF THOSE DAYS THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF SERVICE. THE CAR CANNOT BE DRIVE WHEN GEAR ASSEMBLY STICKS.*AK
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT AROUND 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE MADE A CLUNKING NOISE AND THE ENGINE STOPPED. THIS ALL HAPPENED WITHIN 30 SECONDS. I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE PROBLEM WAS A SEIZED ENGINE AND FORD IS REPLACING WITH A NEW ONE.*AK

ON THREE OCCASIONS ABOUT TWO MONTHS APART, STARTING IN OCT 2001 MY FORD ESCAPE STALLED WHILE DRIVING. IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER THE FIRST AND THIRD TIME, THE MOST RECENT BEING 2/4/02. A "FIX" HAS BEEN MADE, BUT WHETHER THAT TAKES CARE OF THE PROBLEM REMAINS TO BE SEEN. *AK

I PUT THE VEHICLE IN "PARK" AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. DEALER HAS NO EXPLAINATION FOR LOSS OF POWER, BUT SEVERAL OTHER FORD EXCAPES HAVE EXPERENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. DUE TO THE NUMBER OF REPORTED EXCAPES STALLING I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MINE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC.*AK
VEHICLE STOPPED RUNNING WHILE AT SPEED ON THE ROAD. DEALER DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS A SEIZED ENGINE. THE 3.0 L V6 ENGINE IS GOING TO BE REPLACED. VEHICLE ONLY HAD 331 MILES ON IT. *AK
VEHICLE WAS GOING 45MPH AND STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. CONSUMER HAD ONLY OWNED VEHICLE FOR 4 DAYS. DEALER COULDN'T FIND A CAUSE, BUT KEPT IT TO INSPECT FURTHER AND GAVE CONSUMER A LOANER VEHICLE.*AK
ON TWO OCCASIONS ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILL. DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED WITH NO WARNING, THE STEERING GOT SLUGGISH AND THE BRAKE PEDAL GOT STIFF. *YH

MR CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THERE IS A SILENT RECALL ON THE VEHICLE IN REPLACING THE ENGINE, CONSUMER STATED THE FIRST DAY OF PURCAHSE THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE AND THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED.*JB

FAILURE OF PASSENGER DOOR TO OPEN ON A 2002 FORD ESCAPE XLT SUV PREVENTING PASSENGER FROM BEING ABLE TO EXIT VEHICLE. NO KEYLOCK EXISTS AND THERE IS NO WAY TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OR FROM THE OUTSIDE . *AK
I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED. I AM CONCERNED WITH ALL OF THE UPDATES THAT I HAVE SEEN ON THE SAFETY ISSUE OF THE VEHICLE SIMPLY SHUTTING DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THE PROBLEM I AM DEALING WITH IS THE 4WD IS STUCK IN 4WD. THE 4WD LIGHT ISN'T ON, BUT WHEN I TURN SHARPLY, I CAN FEEL THE WHEELS GRABBING FOR TRACTION. FORD ESCAPE ENGINES MAY STALL AT CERTAIN SPEEDS.*MR THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE HAS STALLED THREE TIMES IN THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT RECALL RELATED TO STALLING. THE MANUFACTURER EXPLAINED TO THE CONSUMER THAT HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *NM
COMPLAINT REGARDING 2002 FORD ESCAPE.*MR THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE, SKIP AND CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED A PART WHICH THE MANUFACTURER INDICATED WAS THE LATEST FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. THE PART DID NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO HESITATE E, SKIP AND STALL. *NM
"RECALL CAMPAIGN" - RECALL NOTICE RECEIVED FOR 2002 FORD ESCAPE IN REFERENCE TO THE ACCELERATOR CABLE.*MR THE CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE JAN. 2005. THE CONSUMER CALLED THE DEAL IN MARCH TO HAVE THE RECALL WORK DONE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT IT WAS TOO LATE TO GET THE REPAIR. THEY STATED IF THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT IN JAN OR FEB THEY WOULD HAVE DONE IT. THE REPAIR WERE MADE AT ANOTHER DEALER. *BF *NM
AT 40 MPH THE ENGINE STALLED OUT. I HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND RE START THE ENGINE. LOSS OF POWER TO MAJOR COMPONENTS. IF I HAD BEEN 100 FEET FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD A MAJOR ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED DUE TO 90 DEGREE TURN. SELLING DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED, DUE TO BE INSPECTED 2/5/02. *AK

MY ESCAPE HAS STALLED WHILE GOING DOWN THE STREET AT 40 MPH. THIS IS MY SECOND ESCAPE TO DO THIS (MY REPLACEMENT FOR MY FIRST ESCAPE) I NEED HELP BEFORE WE GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. *AK
WHEN I TEST DROVE THE 2002 FORD ESCAPE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2002, THE BRAKES WERE SPONGY BUT I WAS TOLD THAT NEW BRAKES HAVE TO "WEAR IN" BEFORE THEY GET SOLID. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKES SEEMED TO GET MORE SPONGY AFTER WE HAD DRIVEN IT HOME, SO I CALLED NORTHSTAR FORD ON MONDAY, APRIL 22, TO HAVE THEM CHECK THE BRAKES AND CORRECT A VIBRATION ON TUESDAY MORNING AT 8:00. AT THAT APPOINTMENT THEY WORKED ON CORRECTING THE VIBRATION BUT THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE BRAKES. THAT AFTERNOON WHEN I DROVE THE ESCAPE DOWNTOWN DULUTH, WHEN I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ON A HILL, I NOTICED THAT WITH MODERATE PRESSURE I COULD PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL NEARLY TO THE FLOOR. I MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 25, TO HAVE THEM WASH OFF SOME TIRE DRESSING THAT HAD SPATTERED ON THE VEHICLE. WHEN I ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE BRAKES, THEY SAID THE BRAKES WERE NORMAL AND THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE BRAKES. SO I GAVE THEM A PAPER TO SIGN THAT STATES "THE BRAKES ON OUR FORD ESCAPE ARE FUNCTIONING NORMALLY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE VERY 'SPONGY.' FURTHERMORE, WHEN MODERATE PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE PEDAL GOES NEARLY TO THE FLOOR. THIS TYPE OF BRAKE RESPONSE IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY HAZARD. " THE SERVICE PEOPLE AT NORTHSTAR TOLD ME THE BRAKES WERE NORMAL, BUT THEY WOULDN'T SIGN THE PAPER. I'M REALLY WORRIED THAT IF I EVER HAVE TO MAKE A PANIC STOP THE BRAKES ARE GOING TO FAIL. I DON'T TRUST A BRAKE PEDAL THAT GOES NEARLY TO THE FLOOR. WHEN IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE BRAKES, I TRIED TO GET MY TRADE IN BACK AND LEAVE THE ESCAPE AT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY WOULDN'T LET ME OUT OF THE CONTRACT. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS TO SEE IF THESE BRAKES ARE INDEED NORMAL.*JB
