ON FRIDAY MAY 23, I WAS DRIVING TO THE STORE AND THE "WRENCH" SYMBOL CAME ON. MY TRUCK STARTED TO STALL IN MID-TRAVEL AND I WAS ABLE TO AVOID BEING REAR-ENDED. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THE VEHICLE. THE LIGHT WENT OUT AFTER WE WERE ALMOST HOME. HOWEVER, ON SATURDAY, AFTER I PRESSED THE GAS PEDDLE, THE TRUCK DID NOT PICK UP SPEED. IT IS NOW PARKED IN FRONT OF MY DOOR. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID AT ABOUT 65MPH IN THE LEFTMOST LANE SHORTLY AFTER MERGING FROM I83 SOUTH ONTO I395 (BALTIMORE BELTWAY) WHEN, WITH NO ADVANCE WARNING WHATSOEVER, THE GAS PEDAL STOPPED RESPONDING AT THE SAME TIME AS THE TRIANGLE WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT AND THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" (AS IF I HAD ANY CHOICE) MESSAGE APPEARED. BY THE GRACE OF GOD I WAS ABLE TO COAST ACROSS 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. I WAS ANXIOUS TO GET HOME TO FEED THE DOGS, AND MY HUSBAND WAS OUT OF TOWN, SO RATHER THAN CALL A TOW TRUCK I RESTARTED THE CAR AND KEPT GOING IN THE RIGHT-HAND LANE FOR ANOTHER 3 OR 4 MILES UNTIL THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. IT TOOK ANOTHER 2 HOURS (WITH AN 15-20 ADDITIONAL STALLING EPISODES) UNTIL BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME TO ANNAPOLIS. THROUGH THE INTERNET (AND MY HUSBAND CRAWLING UNDER THE CAR) WE HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM IS A WELL-DOCUMENTED FAULTY OEM HYBRID DRIVE TRAIN MECS COOLANT WATER PUMP. SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT IS EVERY BIT AS SERIOUS AS THE GM IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM, AND A FATAL ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE THAT FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE, AND UNCONSCIONABLE THAT NHTSA HAS NOT FORCED FORD TO DO SO. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED AS THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING). THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE DIAGNOSTIC CODES WERE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
MY VEHICLE IS PART OF THE FORD RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. FORD IS REFUSING TO COVER IT, EVEN THOUGH OUR VIN IS REPORTED ON FORD'S RECALL WEBSITE AS PART OF THE RECALL. *TR
POWER STEERING WENT OUT WITH NO WARNING. IT COMES AND GOES NOW. USUALLY IF CAR IS TURNED OFF, IT WORKS FOR AWHILE. NO WARNING WHEN IT GOES AGAIN--NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANYTHING. *JS
THIS WAS ALREADY REGISTERED ON THIS WEBSITE, ALTHOUGH NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME. I HAVE ALSO BEEN IN CONTACT WITH SARAH MCSHANE. THIS IS IN REFERENCE TO RECALL 14V-284/14S05, WHERE FORD ESCAPE AND MARINERS LOSE THEIR POWER STEETING. OUR VEHICLE ACTUALLY LOST ITS PS A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THE RECALL. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO WASHINGTON (PA) FORD. THEY HAD TO REPLACE OUR IGNITION TO GET THE RECALL CODE. ONCE THEY DID THAT, THEY COMPLETED STEP 1 OF THE RECALL TO REPROGRAM THE POWER STEERING MODULE. AT THAT POINT, WASHINGTON FORD CLOSED OUT THE RECALL, SAYING THAT IT WAS FIXED. THIS WAS BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TEST THE VEHICLE. AS SOON AS I DROVE OFF OF THE LOT, THE PS CONTINUED TO TURN OFF AND ON. TO THIS DAY (4 MONTHS LATER), THE PS CONTINUES TO TURN OFF AND ON AT RANDOM, ACCOMPANIED BY A LOUD CLICK FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. WOLTZ AND WIND FORD LET US KNOW THAT THEY CONTACTED FORD CORPORATE, AND THEY WERE TOLD THAT NO WORK COULD BE DONE ON THE RECALL, SINCE IT WAS CLOSED. THIS SEEMS LIKE AN ERROR, AND WE NEED TO HAVE OUR RECALL OPENED BACK UP. PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP TO HELP ME FROM WRECKING. NUMEROUS TIMES, I HAVE BEEN GOING 60 OR 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED, RESULTING IN NEAR DEATH. THIS CANNOT BE SAFE OR A RESPONSIBILITY OF ME, THE OWNER. *TR
MY CAR ISN'T WORKING PROPERLY DUE TO DEFECTIVE FORD THROTTLE BODY. *TR
FOR THE LAST MONTH OR SO, MY CAR HAS RANDOMLY STALLED, IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THE "PULL OVER SAFELY" LIGHT WOULD LIGHT UP, AND THE ENTIRE CAR WOULD SHUT DOWN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AND THEY SAID THAT I NEED TO REPLACE MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BECAUSE IT IS SHUTTING DOWN. AFTER RESEARCHING, I HAVE DISCOVERED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND I WOULD LIKE TO URGE FORD TO RECALL THE PART AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELLING DEFECTIVE CARS. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ESB SYSTEM AND THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 79,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN AT 10 MPH, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST SUDDENLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,101.
STARTING IN MAY OF 2014, MY CAR'S PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN UNTRUSTWORTHINESS. SOME DAYS THERE'S NO PROBLEM-- I PUSH ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR MOVES ACCORDINGLY. AT A STOP SIGN, I CAN GO. WHILE MOVING AT 50 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, I CAN EASILY ACCELERATE AND MOVE AROUND A MONSTER SIZE 18 WHEELER. BUT ON THE DAYS WHEN I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR DOESN'T RESPOND, I SWEAT. HERE'S A DESCRIPTION: FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL, NO RESPONSE... SO I PRESS DOWN FURTHER, WITHOUT ANY ACCELERATION OF THE CAR. FINALLY, NOW FREAKED OUT THAT THE CAR IS NOT MOVING (AND THAT ANOTHER CAR IS RIGHT ON MY TAIL) I PRESS THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR-- WITH NO IMMEDIATE REACTION. THEN-- BAM-- SURPRISE! IT WORKS AND THE SUDDEN SURGE SENDS ME FLYING BEYOND INTENTION AND I MUST PRESS ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW. AT STOP SIGNS THIS HAPPENS AND PEOPLE BEHIND ME GET FRUSTRATED, PROBABLY THINKING I'M ON DRUGS OR SOMETHING. BUT REALLY, IT'S NOT ME; IT'S MY FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 2008. THE RATE OF INCIDENCE HAS GRADUALLY INCREASED FROM MAY TO THE CURRENT DATE OF JULY, AND CONSEQUENTLY, I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR. *TR
THE POWER STEERING LOCKED UP ON ME AS I WAS DRIVING MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND STOP THE CAR BECAUSE I HAPPEN TO BE DRIVING VERY SLOWLY AT THE TIME AND SHUT OFF THE CAR AND THEN RESTARTED IT. AFTER I RESTARTED IT THE STEERING WORKED FINE. I LOOKED ONLINE TO SEE WHY THAT WOULD HAPPEN AND I FOUND 302 OTHER PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME PROBLEM HTTP://WWW.ABOUTAUTOMOBILE.COM/COMPLAINT/2008/FORD/ESCAPE/STEERING. THE COMPLAINTS SAY THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN MORE AND MORE FREQUENTLY AND CAN HAPPEN WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. FORD IS NOT DOING A RECALL APPARENTLY EVEN THOUGH THIS LACK OF STEERING HAPPENS WITH NO WARNING AS PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! *JS
POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN RIGHT AT A STOP SIGN. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TURNED, THEN PARKED FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD AT MY DAUGHTER'S SCHOOL. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE STEERING WORKED CORRECTLY AGAIN. *JS
WHILE TURNING THE WHEELS THE ABS LIGHT BLINKS ON AND OFF AND THE CAR SEEMED TO BE SLOWLY LOSING POWER. WHEN WHEELS WERE STRAIGHTENED AGAIN IT RAN AS NORMAL. THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES ON THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE GROCERY STORE, EACH TIME WHEN I WAS TURNING, THE ELECTRICAL PANEL WAS DIMMING AND THE GAS PEDAL LOST ABILITY TO PROPEL CAR. *JS

THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING), BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNABLE TO BE PERFORMED TWICE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
AS I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH MY CAR SUDDENLY SPED UP ON ITS OWN. WHEN I BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN MY CAR THEN WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO SECOND GEAR. THE RMPS WOULD JUMP TO OVER 300 WHEN I TRIED TO GO FASTER THAN 25 MPH. ONCE I HAD GONE THAT SPEED FOR A FEW SECONDS MY CAR WOULD THEN DO A HARD JERK AND MOVE INTO THE NEXT GEAR. THIS CAUSED MANY SAFETY HAZARDS FOR ME WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. *JS
TL-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL REQUIRED EXCESSIVE FORCE IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. DJR
DRIVING HOME FROM WORK I WAS PULLING UP TO A STOP SIGN AND MY FOOT WENT TO THE FLOOR, AFTER DRIVING THRU THE INTERSECTION, LUCKILY NO CARS WERE COMING, I PULLED OVER AND THE ABS LIGHT AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHT WAS ON , I SHUT THE CAR OFF WAITED 10 MINUTES STARTED IT BACK UP AND THE BRAKES WORKED THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF A HALF OF DOZEN TIMES NOW. DEALER QUOTED ME $4659.00 TO FIX MASTER CYLINDER, THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM ID BE SURPRISED IF NO ONE HASN'T GOT HURT BECAUSE OF THIS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE POWER STEERING STOPPED. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO STEER AND TURNING LEFT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE AND VERY PAINFUL. I COULD NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO PARK THE CAR. I WAS VERY AFRAID THAT I WOULD LOSE ALL STEERING CAPABILITY AND GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. *TR
DRIVING UP A SLIGHT HILL THROUGH A GRADUAL S CURVE WITH A SUDDEN LOSS OF THE POWER STEERING. AT THE TOP OF THE HILL THE POWER RETURNED. I AM FILING THIS BECAUSE I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW REPORTS OF INCIDENTS SIMILAR TO THIS WITH THE 2008 ESCAPE. IT COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
MY FORD ESCAPE HAD 3 TRANSMISSION FAILURES IN THE PAST 4 YEARS. I HAD IT REBUILD OR REPLACED BY FORD TWICE AND IT NEED A THIRD TRANSMISSION REBUILD OR REPLACE. THE CP4E DOESN'T HOLD UP OR LIKE OTHERS COMMENTED ON THIS VEHICLE THEY HAVE A TENDENCY TO HAVE A LOOSE STEARING WHICH CAUSE THE SECOND GEAR TRANSMISSION BAND TO PULL AWAY OR BROKEN. PLEASE ADVISE ON THIS PROBLEM OR ISSUE A RECALL SINCE THERE ARE MORE ESCAPE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TT
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWARY GOING ABOUT 70 MPH WHEN THE ACCELERATION WENT OUT AND THE OK TO STOP SAFELY LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OVER AND STOPPED AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT OPERATED OK. THIS IS PROBABLY THE 6TH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST MONTH. I WILL BE TAKING IT IN FOR REPAIRS. I CALLED FORD REGARDING THIS ISSUE BECAUSE THERE IS A LIMITED CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM BUT WAS TOLD BECAUSE MY CAR WAS NOT BUILT AT A PARTICULAR FACTORY MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED BY THIS LIMITED PROGRAM, EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS I HAVE SEEN ON OTHER WEBSITES. ONCE AGAIN, MY POWER STEERING FAILED AND HAD TO RESET IT. IS FORD WAITING FOR A LAWSUIT OR A DEATH TO RECALL THIS HAZARD? IF SOMEONE'S VEHICLE DOES THIS WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS- A LAWSUIT IS WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR
I LEFT THE FORD DEALER'S SERVICE CENTER AFTER HAVING MY CAR EXHAUST REPAIRED AND LESS THAN A QUARTER MILE DOWN THE ROAD I SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER TO THE CAR AND COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS TRAVELING ON A VERY BUSY ROAD AND I WAS EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO ROLL INTO A PARKING LOT WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE OR CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THE FORD DEALER SHIP FOUND THAT THE THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTIONED. I FOUND THAT FORD IS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY ON THIS DEFECTIVE PART FOR CERTAIN MODEL YEARS UNDER A "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM". I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THE THROTTLE BODY FOR MY CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHY MY CAR IS EXCLUDED FROM THIS PROGRAM. THE PART IS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BY FORD PER THIS PROGRAM. *TR
EXPERIENCED FREQUENT LOSS OF POWER STEERING AT SPEED AND AT STOP A FEW MONTHS AGO. REPLACING THE BATTERY RESOLVED IT FOR 2 MONTHS. THEN IT STARTED AGAIN WHEN IN TUCSON. EXTREME WOBBLE IN THE STEERING COLUMN AT ALL TIMES. RESTARTING THE CAR HELPED RESET POWER STEERING FOR THE FIRST 2 DAYS IF THE CAR LOST POWER STEERING WHILE AT REST. RESTARTING THE CAR AT SPEED IS NOT POSSIBLE AND LOSING POWER STEERING IS PRETTY SUDDEN AND SCARY. WAS DRIVING AT 70MPH ON INTERSTATE 10 AND LOST POWER STEERING SEVERAL TIMES. HAD TO PULL OVER WITH AVAILABLE MANUAL STEERING, WHICH WAS HARD. RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THE 2008 FORD ESCAPE--LOSS OF POWER STEERING BOTH AT REST AND AT SPEED. FILING COMPLAINT. *JS
THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DRIVE ROUGH AND THE WRENCH LIGHT POPPED ON THE DASH. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALER AND WAS DETERMINED TO HAVE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 55,000 MILES. TOLD WOULD COST OVER $2K TO FIX AND WARRANTY JUST EXPIRED. WE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED FROM THE FORD DEALER 20,000 MILES AGO. *TR
WAS DRIVING AND TAKING A TURN WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. STOPPED THE CAR AND THEN SHUT IT OFF. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK ON. HOWEVER, THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL WITH A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS WAS ONLY THE LATEST INCIDENT. EARLIER IN THE MORNING WHEN I STARTED MY CAR THERE WASN'T POWER STEERING. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN AT WHICH TIME IT WORKED. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT A MONTH HAPPENING MAYBE 1 OR 2 TIMES A WEEK. THE SHAKING AND NOISE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN IS GETTING LOUDER WHILE IDLING. *TR
CAR ENGINE TURNED OFF AT 70 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. PRIOR TO THE ENGINE SHUT-OFF, ONLY THE "WRENCH INDICATOR" WAS ON; IT COMES ON OCCASIONALLY. SERVICE CENTERS CAN NEVER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE ONCE THE CAR HAS TURNED OFF. WARNING LIGHT ON DASH SAID "SAFETY MODE" AT THE TIME OF ENGINE SHUT-OFF. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER ABOUT TWO MINUTES. DASH WARNING INDICATORS TURNED OFF. GOT BACK ON THE INTERSTATE ONLY FOR THE CAR ENGINE TO TURN-OFF AGAIN AT THE BASE OF AN OFF-RAMP ABOUT FOUR MILES FARTHER UP THE ROAD. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT 55-60 MPH BEFORE THE SECOND INCIDENT. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 154,000.
COMPLAINT DESCRIPTION CASE # [XXX] IN THE PAST I HAVE BEEN A SUPPORTER OF THE "AMERICAN" COMPANY, FORD. FORD HAS NOT STOOD BY ITS PRODUCT (AND POST THE LINKS THAT ARE ON THE INTERNET CONCERNING YOUR "STEERING COLUMN PROBLEM"!) I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED THE DAY THE STEERING COLUMN WENT OUT!!! I WANT MY MONEY BACK! $1,300.00 (I HAD TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN, JUST 7 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL OFTEN. AT FIRST IT WOULD NOT WORK RIGHT AFTER VEHICLE WAS STARTED. AFTER SHUTTING DOWN AND RESTARTING IT WOULD OFTEN KICK BACK IN AND WORK. IT PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE AND ABOUT 2 WEEKS AFTER INITIAL INCIDENT IT WOULD OFTEN FAIL WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS UP TO 70 MPH. THIS IS MY WIFE'S PRIMARY VEHICLE AND IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED AT THOSE SPEEDS SHE WOULD NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO PROPERLY MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OUT OF DANGER. *TR
BOTH REAR QUARTER PANELS ARE PREMATURELY RUSTING AND I HAVE SEEN THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH MULTIPLE FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS.
!ST TIME STARTED TO LEAVE, NO ASSIST. DROVE SHORT DISTANCE TO MY HOME. HARD TO STEER BUT DRIVABLE. SECOND TIME MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND STARTED TO MAKE A TURN ,NO ASSIST. WAS ARRIVING AT DESTINATION. BOTH TIMES WHEN THE CAR WAS RESTARTED THE POWER ASSIST WORKED NORMALLY. THE 2 ABOVE INCIDENTS WERE ABOUT 2 WEEKS APART.THE LOSS OF ASSIST WILE DRIVING WAS ON 04-01-14. *TR
AS I WAS DRIVING, I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A TURN AND THAT'S WHEN I LOST POWER TO MY STEERING WHEEL. THE WHEEL WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. I STOPPED MY VEHICLE, SHUT IF OFF, AND RESTARTED. IT BEGAN TO GO BACK TO NORMAL BUT THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHAKING ON IT'S OWN. EVER SINCE THE FIRST INCIDENT, OFF AND ON, THE STEERING WHEEL WILL HAVE NO POWER. TODAY, I ALMOST CRASHED WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. IT TOOK ALL OF MY STRENGTH TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T HIT THE MEDIAN. I WAS COMING TO A STOP TO MAKE MY TURN AND IT WENT OUT RIGHT THEN AND THERE. AFTER LEAVING WORK TODAY AGAIN IT FAILED. I WAS ONLY BACKING OUT WHEN I LOST POWER. I ALREADY GOT IN TOUCH WITH FORD AND THEY DID SAY IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE BUT NOT A RECALL. *TR
WITHOUT WARNING, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE SIMPLY WENT OUT. I HAD NO ISSUES OR INDICATION THAT THE STEERING WAS ABOUT TO FAIL AND SUDDENLY, THE POWER STEERING SIMPLY STOPPED WORKING. FORTUNATELY, THIS LOSS OF POWER STEERING DIDN'T RESULT IN A CRASH IN MY CASE. I QUICKLY SCHEDULED AN INSPECTION AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE POWER STEERING HAD IN FACT FAILED. IN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET, I HAVE FOUND SCORES OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I DISCOVERED THAT FORD HAD CHANGED FROM A HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM TO AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM STARTING IN 2008. CLEARLY THIS SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO IMMEDIATELY. I WAS LUCKY NOT TO HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT BUT ONE DAY SOME ONE WILL BE KILLED WHEN THIS SYSTEM FAILS AGAIN. DON'T LET THIS TURN INTO ANOTHER ISSUE LIKE IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING WITH GM IGNITIONS AND LIVES ARE LOST. *TR
WHILE DRIVING IN REGULAR TRAFFIC, I NOTICED THAT MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHUDDER WHEN STOPPED. AFTER PARKING, SHUTTING OFF CAR, AND THEN RETURNING, MY CAR HAD LOST ITS POWER STEERING. IT HAS INTERMITTENTLY RETURNED AFTER TURNING CAR. OFF/ON, BUT IT IS HAPPENING MORE OFTEN. QUICK INTERNET SEARCH LISTED VERY SIMILAR ISSUES AND SYMPTOMS. ALL POINTING TOWARDS THE ELECTRONIC STEERING ASSEMBLY. WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT COSTS NEARLY $1400 TO FIX USUALLY. I FIND THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND WILL NOT BE HAVING MY WIFE OR CHILD IN THIS VEHICLE. *TR
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS, WHENEVER I PUT MY CAR IN REVERSE AND BEGIN TO BACK UP, I LOSE MY STEERING ABILITY. THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET MY STEERING WHEEL TO WORK AGAIN IS IF I TURN MY CAR OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON AGAIN. WELL, TODAY, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME I TRIED MULTIPLE TIMES TO TURN MY CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND MY POWER STEERING WOULD NOT KICK BACK IN. I HAVE READ THROUGH MANY COMPLAINTS ON HERE AS WELL AS OTHER SITES AND SEE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR 2008 ESCAPE. I HAVE SEEN THAT IT CAN COST OVER $1400 TO GET IT FIXED!! I DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY RIGHT NOW!! THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT TO TELL ME THAT SOMETHING IN THE POWER STEERING WAS GOING IS RIDICULOUS!! IN THE PAST 2 YEARS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, GET A NEW BATTERY, GET BRAKES, TIRES,NEW GAS TANK, NEW SENSOR FOR THE HEATING CONTROL, AND THE LIST CONTINUES. THIS CAR IS ONLY 6 YEARS OLD AND JUST PAST 100,000 MILES!!! I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL THESE THINGS ALREADY!! WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO PULL AND SHAKE TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. THE POWER STEERING ALSO SHUTS OFF ENTIRELY WHILE DRIVING, AND RANDOMLY WHEN STARTING THE CAR. THE CAR IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO STEER WHEN THIS OCCURS, MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO DRIVE. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME THAT THE POWERING STEERING HAS GONE OUT ON MY ESCAPE. I HAVE REPORTED THE OTHER INCIDENTS AS WELL. JUST IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR FORD TO RECALL THIS ISSUE THAT IS LIFE THREATENING!! THESE LAST TWO TIMES HAVE BEEN AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED THANK GOODNESS! POWER ASSISTED STEERING LOCKED UPON STARTING THE CAR, THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY TIME I START MY CAR AND I HAVE TO RESTART MY CAR 6+ TIMES TO GET MY STEERING TO UNLOCK. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AT STOPLIGHTS AND IS FAVORING THE LEFT WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT. WHEN THE STEERING IS LOCKED IT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE CAR. I STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN LEFT UP A HILL. THE STEERING LOCKED AND FOR A SECOND OR TWO I COULDN'T TURN AND WAS AFRAID I WOULD CRASH INTO THE HILLSIDE. AFTER BRAKING THE STEERING COLUMN UNLOCKED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE WHOLE COLUMN AT MY EXPENSE. *TR
MY ESCAPE HAD A FAULTY POWER STEERING SENSOR OR STEERING COLUMN THAT WOULD ALLOW THE POWER STEERING TO STOP WORKING AT UNKNOWN TIMES. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING AND AFFECTED THE WAY THE CAR WOULD STEER. I HAD TO REPLACE THIS AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP AT A COST OF $1,200 TO ME. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM THAT FORD IS REQUIRED TO PAY FOR. *TR
AT FIRST THE POWER STEERING DIDNOT WORK UPON STARTING CAR, RESTARTED AND IT WORKED. AS TIME WENT ON THIS GOT WORSE, HAVING TO RESTART SEVERAL TIMES AND NOW ONCE POWER STEERING WORKS IT WILL GO OFF ANYTIME EVEN JUST DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY. ALSO WHEN POWER STEERING IS WORKING THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL AS THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY COMPLAINTS THAT FORD HAS OFFERED A TORQUE SENSOR KIT INSTEAD OF HAVING TO REPLACE THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE NOV 2013, WHILE PULLING FROM PARKED POSITION, STEERING IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. HAVE TO TURN OFF ENGINE AND RESTART TO HAVE STEERING OPERATIONAL. HAS OCCURRED 6 TIMES. *TR

STARTING IN ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF MARCH, POWER STEERING WILL FAIL UNEXPECTEDLY. SINCE THEN IT HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT. IF YOU JUST START THE CAR WITH THE STEERING WHEEL BASICALLY ON CENTER, THERE WILL BE NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. IF YOU CRANK THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT AS YOU START THE CAR, THE STEERING WILL WORK FOR A WHILE BUT THE WHEEL WILL SHAKE AND MAKE A NOISE WHEN IT IS ON-CENTER. IT WILL THEN SOMETIMES FAIL COMPLETELY AFTER A FEW MINUTES. STOPPING AND RESTARTING THE CAR MAY GET IT TO WORK FOR A WHILE.
THE FAN SWITCH AND RELAY BOX HAS A ELECTRICAL MELT DOWN ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE FORD DEALER. THE FAN SWITCH WAS REPLACED ONCE BEFORE. THE LAST TIME IT COST ME ABOUT $250.00 WITH EXTENDED WARRANTY. NOW THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND WILL COST ME ABOUT $1000.00 TO REPLACE. I FEEL FORD DID A PATCH JOB DURING THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND IT WAS NEVER CORRECTLY FIXED. I CHECKED ONE WEBSITE AND THERE WAS 923 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE FAULTY FAN SWITCH. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD AND FORD NEEDS TO RECALL AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE FAN SWITCH AND RELAY BOX ON THE 2008 FORD ESCAPE. *TR
