TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST SUDDENLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I WAS TRYING TO DET OVER WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING ACTED LIKE IT WAS LOCKED UP AND VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN TURNED IT BACK ON. THE PROBLEM QUIT. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED AND IS VERY SCARY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY FROM ALBUQUERQUE TO LAS CRUCES WHEN MY STEERING BECAME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE WHEEL. I QUICKLY PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY AND CALLED MY BOYFRIEND TO ASK HIM WHAT TO DO. HE SAID RESTART YOUR CAR SEE IF THAT RESETS IT. IT DID WORK. THEN LATER I PARKED AND THE STEERING WHEEL JUST STARTED SHAKING VIGOROUSLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SIX MORE TIMES SINCE THEN RANGING FROM SPEEDS OF 20 TO 75 MILES AND HOUR. I HAVE READ ONLINE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS TO ME TO BE A VERY UNSAFE THING TO HAVE HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE FREEWAY. VERY SCARY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU CAN'T STEER OR ITS VERY HARD TO STEER. I ALSO DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY FORD WOULD REPLACE THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN VERSUS JUST THE SENSOR. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A BIG TURN AND IT HAD STOPPED WORKING IT COULD HAVE BEEN A HORRIBLE WRECK. IF THERE IS ANYWAY POSSIBLE THAT THIS COULD BE A RECALL TO REPLACE THE SENSOR OR COLUMN IT WOULD MAKE EVERYONE DRIVING FEEL THAT MUCH MORE SAFER ON THE ROADS. THANK YOU FOR HELP WITH THIS MATTER. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2009 ESCAPE NEW. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 142,00 MILES AND IS HAVING AN ISSUE. MY WIFE CALLED ME ON DECEMBER 24 2013 AND SAID THAT THE CAR WAS HARD TO STEER. SHE SAID THAT EARLIER IN THE DAY SHE WAS TURNING INTO AN ENTRANCE TO A GAS STATION AND MISJUDGED WHERE THE RAMP WAS AND THE CURB AND HOPED THE CURB WITH DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE. SHE SAID SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE INTO THE STATION TO GET GAS. I TOLD HER THE NOISE WAS MOST LIKELY THE STRUT BOTTOMING OUT. I ASKED HER HOW WAS THE STEERING AFTER THAT SHE SAID IT WAS FINE. THIS TOOK PLACE IN THE AM. SHE CALLED ME AROUND 5 PM. AND SAID THE CAR WAS HARD TO STEER AGAIN I TOLD HER TO TURN THE CAR OFF TAKE OUT THE KEY AND OPEN THE DOOR AND THEN CLOSE THE DOOR AND RESTART THE CAR AS THIS WOULD REST ALL THE ELECTRONICS. SHE DID THIS AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I TOLD HER I WOULD LOOK AT IT WHEN I CAME HOME. SHE CALLED ME AGAIN AROUND 6 PM AND SAID THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I TOLD HER TO TURN IT OFF AND RESTART IT AGAIN. THIS CLEARED UP THE PROBLEM. AFTER GETTING OFF WORK I CAME HOME AND CRAWLED UNDER THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY DAMAGE. I FOUND NO DAMAGE. DECEMBER 26, 27 SHE CALLED ME AND SAID IT WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.ON DEC 27 WE WHERE GOING TO TAKE THE FAMILY OUT TO EAT AND THE STEERING BECAME HARD FOR ME TO STEER. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESET, ISSUE CLEARED UP. AS I WAS DRIVING I COULD FEEL THE STEERING WHEEL PULSATING. I WENT TO DEALERSHIP, PULLED INTO THE SERVICE LANE AND NOTICED THAT WHILE IN PARK WITH THE VEHICLE RUNNING THE STEERING WHEEL PULSATED BACK AND FORTH BY IT SELF. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT SOMETIMES LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE CAN CAUSE THE PROBLEM. I SAID I WAS AWARE OF THAT AND DID A LOAD TEST ON BATTERY AND IT IS FINE AS WELL AS THE CHARGING SYSTEM. I WENT OUT TODAY DEC 28 AND STARED THE VEHICLE AND THERE IS NO POWER STEERING. I TRIED IT TWICE BOTH TIMES THE SAME RESULT. *TR
AS I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE WENT INTO A LIMP MODE. I HAD NO RESPONSE FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WOULD MOVE FORWARD AT A IDLE SPEED. YELLOW WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED VEHICLE RAN AS NORMAL FOR A FEW DAYS AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. *TR
SAFETY ISSUE: MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE'S STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHUDDER/VIBRATE AT IDLE. IN ADDITION, WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE STEERING WHEEL CANNOT BE MOVED LEFT OR RIGHT. IT LOCKS UP. I HAVE TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RE-START IT IN ORDER TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE. TODAY, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AND THE STEERING WHEEL COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. I COULD HARDLY CONTROL THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS. I HAD TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AGAIN AND TURN IT BACK ON IN ORDER TO PROCEED. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 57,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS HAD THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ON IT SINCE I PURCHASED IT NEW IN JAN 2009. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND HAVE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE, AND WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THIS BASED ON SAFETY ISSUES. THE SITUATION THAT I EXPERIENCED TODAY COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY OR FATALITIES. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR A NEW STEERING COLUMN, AT 56,000 MILES. UPDATED 02/24/14
I WAS DRIVING ON A 4 LINE HIGHWAY IN THE PASSING LANE. MY CAR LOST POWER AND THE GAS PEDAL WOULD NOT WORK. I HAD TO PULL INTO THE TURNING LANE BECAUSE A CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST REARENDED ME. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN A YEAR. LAST TIME THE GARAGE HAD MY CAR FOR 5 DAYS AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. I HAD TO GET A LOANER CAR FOR THE SECOND TIME IN TWO YEARS. THANK GOD THAT I WAS NOT IN A WRECK AND COULD GET PULLED OVER ONTO THE BRIM OF A 4 LANE DANGEROUS HIGHWAY. AFTER LOOKING O LINE LAST EVE AND TODAY I FOUND THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM SOME NOT AS LUCKY AS IAM. THE GARAGE TOLD ME TODAY THAT IT IS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY AND WILL COST ME 300$ OR MORE. I AM HOPING THAT SOMETHING CAN BE DOWN TO PREVENT OTHER SERIOUS ACCIDENTS OR EVEN DEATHS DUE TO THIS MALFUNCTION. *TR

MY WIFE HAD STARTED THE 2009 FORD ESCAPE AND WAS TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 5MPH, PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR BEGAN MOVING, FELT AS IF THERE AS NO POWER. SHE CHECKED TO ENSURE THAT THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE. THE CAR WOULD NOT GO OVER 5 MPH. THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON, NO SPEEDOMETER READING, AND SHE PROCEEDED ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE THE CAR AGAIN. THE CAR WAS DRIVABLE FOR THREE MILES HOME, WITH NO SPEEDOMETER READING, LIMITED POWER. AS SHE DROVE, SHE NEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK TO STEADY THE CAR. A SHE PROCEEDED TO RE-ENGAGE THE CAR THE SHIFTER WAS "CLUNKY, SLIPPING, AND DID NOT FEEL SECURE". SHE DID GET THE CAR SAFELY HOME, HOWEVER WE CHECKED THE CAR ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE AND THE CAR CONTINUES TO NOT SEEM TO ENGAGE THE POWER TRAIN, IS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY, HAS NO POWER IN THE ENGINE. THERE APPEAR TO BE NO LEAKAGE OF FLUIDS, THE CAR HAS BEEN PROPERLY SERVICED, HAS FUEL, HAS A NEW BATTERY, AND WE ARE WONDERING IF THIS ISSUE IS NOW COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY. PLEASE INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION TO THE MANY COMPLAINT THAT SEEM TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATTERN WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR
WE GOT IN THE CAR READY TO GO TO THE STORE AND THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WAS SHUT AND THE BACK REAR WINDOW EXPLODED. GLASS SHATTERED EVERYWHERE. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR
DRIVING AT 50 MPH ON HIGHWAY AND CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE. THIS REDUCED CAR SPEED TO 20MPH AND I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER OUT OF TRAFFIC TO AVOID GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND. TURNED CAR OFF FOR 30 MINUTES AND STARTED CAR UP AND DROVE HOME. THIS HAPPENED 2 WEEKS LATER. *TR
I OWN A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE TRAVELING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER AND THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON. ACCELERATOR PEDAL PUSHED, BUT NO RESPONSE. SHUT DOWN VEHICLE AND RESTARTED CAR DRIVEN WITHOUT INCIDENT, UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 DAYS LATER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME HARD TO TURN WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC RE REPAIRS PERFORMED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
MY CAR LOST ACCELERATION IN AN INTERSECTION GOING ABOUT 15 MPH. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING SLOW AND ROUGH. THE THROTTLE HAD NO EFFECT ON ENGINE SPEED. AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF ROUGH IDLING, THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND I WAS THEN ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESTART THE ENGINE AND IT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN FAULT WITH THE FORD ESCAPE AND COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTS. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE ESCAPE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. THE SPEED DRASTICALLY DROPPED TO LESS THAN 5 MPH AND NOTHING HAPPENED WHEN I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER, WHERE I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTARTED IT. UPON RESTARTING THE CAR IT DROVE NORMALLY. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER WHEN I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THE WRENCH LIGHT WENT ON AND WHEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON THE LIGHT WENT AWAY. *TR
DRIVING ALONG, ENGINE LOSES POWER, CAR IS JERKING, WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON, IDLES QUICKLY. COASTED OFF SIDE OF ROAD. TURN CAR OFF, TURNED BACK ON - WRENCH LIGHT OFF - DRIVE AWAY AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. I WAS ON HOV LANE ON LIE DRIVING TO MY PARENTS. AS I WAS COMING OFF TO REG LANE, MY ENGINE STALLED. FORTUNATELY, THE OTHER CAR WAS FAR AWAY ABLE TO STOP. I CHANGED GEAR INTO PARK AND RESTARTED THE CAR. *TR

WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE SEEMED TO LOSE ALL POWER, AND FORCED ME TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. A 'WRENCH' WARNING LIGHT APPEARED ON MY DASHBOARD SYSTEM, AND WHILE THE ENGINE HAD NOT STALLED, IT WAS RUNNING VERY LOW AND ROUGH. I AGAIN TRIED TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL AND IT WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF, WAITED A FEW SECONDS AND RESTARTED IT. IT RAN AS IF THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG, AND THERE WERE NO MORE WARNING ICONS SHOWING ON THE DASHBOARD. IT RAN WITHOUT ISSUE FOR ANOTHER 15 MINUTES ON THE HIGHWAY, UNTIL IT AGAIN LOST ALL ENGINE POWER, AND THIS TIME THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON INSTEAD OF THE WRENCH ICON. RESTARTING IT LET ME DRIVE A FEW MORE MILES TO REACH MY HOME. *TR
OUR 2009 FORD ESCAPE HAS LOST IT'S POWER STEERING, WHILE I WAS DRIVING, TWICE THIS WEEK. IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE, YET IT WAS STILL RUNNING. IT IS ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SO THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT IT (I INITIALLY THOUGHT MY POWER STEERING FLUID MUST BE LOW). THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, ON FRIDAY, I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. NOTHING SHOWED UP ON THE DASHBOARD AT THE TIME AND NOTHING SHOWED UP ON HIS SCANNERS. WHEN THE TRUCK WAS STARTED AGAIN THE STEERING WORKED FINE. WE DECIDED IT MUST BE A FLUKE. WE ONLY HAVE 85,505 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN, WHILE I WAS DRIVING. MY HUSBAND WAS SUPPOSED TO DRIVE TO OUR FRIEND'S HOUSE NORTH OF BOSTON (WE ARE SOUTH OF BOSTON). HE CANCELLED. IT TERRIFIES ME TO THINK OF WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED TO HIM AT HIGH SPEED ON THOSE HIGHWAYS. WE GOT ON THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN 2008 & 2009 FORD ESCAPES. IT TURNS OUT THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AVERAGE COST IS $1500. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS DANGEROUS LIFE SAFETY PROBLEM YET HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. DO PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO DIE FIRST? *TR
I WAS STOPPED WAITING AT A RED LIGHT AT THE TOP OF A VERY STEEP HILL. THE LIGHT CHANGED TO GREEN AND I LET MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND WENT TO PUSH THE GAS AND MY FORD ESCAPE LOST ALL POWER AND STALLED. THE BATTERY LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT CAME ON AS IT STALLED AND I STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS DOWN THE STEEP HILL. I HAD NO ABILITY TO STEER THE CAR AND I ALSO DIDN'T HAVE ANY BRAKES, I TRIED TO SLAM THE BRAKES AS WE WERE ACCELERATING MORE QUICKLY DOWNHILL BUT I HAD NO CONTROL. IN A MATTER OF SECONDS MY SUV VEERED OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A BRAKE WALL AND AT THAT IMPACT MY ENTIRE VEHICLE FLIES OVER ONTO THE DRIVERS SIDE AND STOPPED. THE SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN ANY DOORS. A PASSING CAR STOPPED AND HELPED MY SON AND I OUT OF THE BACK HATCH. *TR
WAS DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS ON RESIDENTIAL ROADS AND POWER STEERING STOPPED WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND COULD NOT TURN THE WILL WITHOUT HARD FORCE AND IT STILL WOULDN'T TURN FULLY ONLY TURNED ABOUT MAYBE 20 DEGREES LEFT OR RIGHT, VERY DANGEROUS THE EPAS IS TERRIBLE TURNED IT OFF AND BACK ON AND IT STARTED WORKING UNTIL MY WIFE DROVE IT AND GOT STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD... WHILE DRIVING ON MONDAY 11/18/13 MY WIFE WAS STOPPING THEN WENT TO ACCELERATE AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. UPON TURNING IT OFF IT RESTARTED JUST FINE. THIS HAPPEN 3 MORE TIMES FROM THEN TO TUESDAY EVENING. I DROVE IT TO WORK WEDNESDAY 11/20/13 AND WHILE ACCELERATING ON TO HWY 94 THE VEHICLE STALLED. IT DID HESITATE UPON RESTARTING BUT STARTED AND RAN. WEDNESDAY EVENING ON OUR WAY HOME DOING APPROX 30MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED AND AGAIN HESITATED TO START BUT DID AND RAN OK. THURSDAY MORNING 11/21/13 WHILE ON MY WAY TO WORK I WAS AT CRUISING SPEED DOING APPROX 60MPH ON HWY 94 THE VEHICLE STALLED. IT HESITATED TO RESTART AGAIN BUT STARTED AFTER LEAVING THE VEHICLE OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT A SPEED OF AROUND 60MPH MY TRUCK BEEPED AND SIGNALED A WRENCH LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD AND MY VEHICLE JUST STOPPED AND LOST SPEED AND I COULDN'T ACCELERATE TO CONTINUE TO MOVE TO A SAFE AREA. MY VEHICLE JUST COMPLETED STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WHILE VEHICLES ARE COMING AT THE SAME SPEED BEHIND ME. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES ONCE ENTERING A RAMP ON TO HIGHWAY ACCELERATING ON TO THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE JUST TURNED OFF. ALSO ONCE DRIVING HEAVY TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE JUST STOPPED AND A VEHICLE HAS TO BRAKE AND SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING ME FROM BEHIND. JUST TO KNOW THE HIGHWAY INCIDENT WAS THE MOST HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AS IT CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS AN ACCIDENT RESULTING IN SOMEONE OR FAMILY BEING CRITICALLY INJURED OR LOSS OF LIFE. I HAVE BEEN READING ALL OVER THE INTERNET OF THE SAME PROBLEMS AND SITUATION THAT OCCUR BECAUSE OF THIS VEHICLE FAILURE. WE HAVE A 2009 ESCAPE AND SO FAR WITHIN THE YEAR AND FOUR MONTHS OF HAVING IT WE SADLY HAVE HAD NON-STOP PROBLEMS. OUR STEERING HAS LOCKED UP COMPLETELY.IT STARTED BACK IN 11/13 AND HAS CONTINUED TO NOW 4/14. FINALLY AFTER 1 1.2 HOURS I TRIED AGAIN AND IT UNLOCKED AND I DROVE STRAIGHT HOME AND WAITED FOR MY HUSBAND. THEN IT STARTED TO LOCK UP WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR WITH ME AND SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. THEN IN JAN. 2014 THE STEERING BECAME PERMANENTLY LOCKED AND WE DRIVE IT THAT WAY JUST BECAUSE 1.)THE PART IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND 2.)NOBODY WILL LET US TRADE OUT THE VEHICLE JUST BECAUSE THERE IS NO VALUE TO IT IS WHAT THE DEALERSHIPS TOLD US. A WARNING LIGHT ON DASHBOARD SHOWED A YELLOW WRENCH. I TURNED CAR OFF. WAITED 30 SECONDS. STARTED AND LIGHT WAS OFF, CAR NORMAL. TOOK TO DEALER. DIAGNOSTIC CODE SAID ELECTRONIC THROTTLE. DID NOT HAVE FIXED IMMEDIATELY. NEXT DAY DID IT TWO TIMES IN LESS THAN FIVE MILES. NOW ENGINE LIGHT ON SECOND TIME OF OCCURRENCE. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE. COULD BE ON HIGHWAY. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN CAME TO A STOP THE VEHICLE RAN ROUGH AT IDLE AND SURGED. CAR TAKEN IMMEDIATELY TO FORD AND THEY MISDIAGNOSED. AFTER THAT IT CONTINUED TO DO IT MULTIPLE TIMES ON CITY STREETS AND INTERSTATES. THE CAR WOULD HAVE NO POWER AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I WOULD STEP ON GAS. WHILE MAKING A SLOW RIGHT TURN THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING. I GOT OFF THE ROAD, CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD & FOUND NOTHING. GOT OUT THE MANUAL, IT SAYS POWER STEERING IS ALL ELECTRIC AND THERE IS NOTHING TO CHECK. I RESTARTED THE ESCAPE AND POWER STEERING WAS FINE. AFTER 80MILES ON THE ROAD A SUDDEN POWER STEERING FAILURE WITH NO WARNING IS DANGEROUS. *TR

ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, I WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN SUDDENLY THE ESCAPE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE WRENCH LIGHT APPEARED. I COASTED TO THE RIGHT TURN LANE THEN STOPPED. TURNED THE ESCAPE OFF, WAITED A FEW SECONDS AND THEN TRIED STARTING IT. IT STARTED BUT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE SHOOK. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ESCAPE TO CRAWL TO A PARKING LOT. I TURNED IT BACK OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES LONGER. AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES, I TRIED STARTING IT AND IT SEEMED TO RUN JUST FINE. ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, I HAD A REPEAT OF THIS. WE HAD THE REPAIR SHOP TOW IT IN, FEARING THAT IT WOULD DIE IN TRAFFIC AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CAR DEALER SAYS IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. *TR
WAS PULLING OUT OF GAS STATION TO MERGE ONTO BUSY STREET, CAR BEGAN TO ROLL FORWARD UPON ACCELERATION THEN LOST ALL RESPONSE AND LURCHED INTO ROAD STOPPING THERE. ENGINE SHUT OFF AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ATTEMPTED TO RESTART VEHICLE, CAR WOULD REV BUT NOT RESPOND WITH ANY ACCELERATION. DURING THIS TIME INCREDIBLY LOUD HARSH SHIFTING OCCURRED , SOUNDED AS THOUGH TRANSMISSION FELL OUT OF CAR. DEALERSHIP REPLACED DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY, CURRENTLY STILL INVESTIGATING TRANSMISSION ISSUES. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING ON THE TURNPIKE WHEN ALL AT ONCE MY CAR JERKED THEN LOST POWER, I WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE CAR SO I COASTED ON THE MEDIAN TILL THE CAR ALLOWED ME TO TURN ONTO AN EXIT RAMP. I HAVE TO CUT THE CAR OFF AND ON AT LEAST 6 TIMES WHILE TRYING TO TURN THE WHEEL BEFORE IT UNLOCKS AND ALLOWS ME TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL. MY HUSBAND CALLED THE FORD DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, AND I WOULD HAVE TO BEAR THE COST. I DON'T FEEL THIS IS FAIR BECAUSE I RESEARCHED THIS MATTER AND FOUND THERE ARE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS MATTER. I AM NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK BECAUSE I'M AFRAID THERE COULD BE A CATASTROPHE. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHEN MY VEHICLE SLIGHTLY LUNGED FORWARD THEN I LOST ALL SPEED CONTROL. MY SPEED DROPPED RAPIDLY AND I WAS UNABLE TO USE MY GAS PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO ROLL TO A SAFE PLACE TO CALL AND WAIT FOR A TOW TRUCK. MY OWNER'S MANUAL INDICATED THE WARNING LIGHT (WRENCH) MEANT THERE WAS A THROTTLE CONTROL/POWERTRAIN FAILURE AND TO CONTACT A DEALERSHIP RIGHT AWAY. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I WAS CONTACTED THE FOLLOWING DAY THAT THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THE THROTTLE BODY HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THAT MY EXTENDED WARRANTY PLAN, MILLENNIUM, WHICH I PURCHASED THROUGH FORD MOTOR COMPANY, WAS NOT COVERING THE REPAIR BECAUSE THEY CATEGORIZED THAT PART UNDER "EMISSIONS." THAT IS RIDICULOUS. AFTER ADDITIONAL RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS WEBSITES INDICATING THIS THROTTLE BODY ISSUE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO FORD'S ATTENTION AND THEY HAVE YET TO ISSUE A RECALL. I ALSO FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PART ON THE 2010 FORD FREESTYLE....WHY AREN'T THEY TAKING CARE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR THE REST OF US? IT'S A REAL PROBLEM! THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY CAR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOOSE GAS POWER, BUT MY BRAKES AND STEERING STILL WORKS FINE. AS EXITING A HIGHWAY THE CAR JUST LOST POWER. THE GAS PEDAL WAS USELESS AND THE RPMS WERE ABOUT 1000. PULLED OFF TO SHOULDER AND SHUT CAR DOWN, WAITED 5 MINUTES AND STARTED CAR AND IT WAS OK. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP SERVICE AND WAS DETERMINED IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY THROUGH DIAGONISTICS. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED AND REPROGRAMMED. THIS DEFECT MAY AND WILL CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS AND POTENTIAL FATALITIES DUE TO THE WAY THAT THE THROTTLE JUST STOPS AND THE CAR IS UNABLE TO SPEED TO A NEEDED SPEED FOR SAFETY ON HIGHWAYS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE (V6) HOME FROM WORK, MY CAR LOST ACCELERATION. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, THE LIGHTS STILL WORKED, RADIO ON, POWER STEERING, BUT I HAD NO ACCELERATION RESPONSE FROM THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO COAST MY CAR ONTO A SIDE ROAD WITHOUT INCIDENT, AND NOTICED THE SERVICE LIGHT WAS ON BEFORE TURNING MY CAR OFF (WRENCH SYMBOL). I WAITED FOR A FEW MOMENTS, AND TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. TO MY SURPRISE, THE CAR STARTED UP IMMEDIATELY, AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT FURTHER ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP TO HAVE THE COMPUTER CHECKED TO SEE IF THE ERROR WAS STILL IN THE SYSTEM, BUT IT WAS ALREADY CLEARED. TWO WEEKS LATER, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM A VACATION WEEKEND, THE CAR DID THE SAME THING, EXCEPT THIS TIME I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, THREE HOURS FROM HOME WITH MY SON IN THE BACK SEAT. TO SAY I WAS RATTLED WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, TURN THE CAR OFF, RESTART THE CAR AND REJOIN TRAFFIC. ROUGHLY 1 HOUR LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF FOR INSPECTION AND SERVICE. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO PINPOINT THE ISSUE TO THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY, AND DETERMINED IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. $375 AND 24 HOURS LATER THE CAR WAS FIXED. NO ISSUES AFTER HAVING THE CAR BACK IN MY POSSESSION FOR TWO WEEKS. I WANTED TO ISSUE AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT, AND EXPRESS MY DISSATISFACTION WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR KNOWING ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE, AND DRAGGING THEIR FEET ON ISSUANCE OF A RECALL. THE DELPHI MANUFACTURED COMPONENT WAS KNOWN TO BE FLAWED, AND HAD ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) 09-23-5, AND RE-ENGINEERED THE COMPONENT. I AM A LOYAL FORD DRIVER, BUT I FEAR FORD'S LACK OF ETHICAL CONDUCT ON THIS ISSUE MAY BE CAUSE FOR RECONSIDERATION OF FUTURE PURCHASES. *TR

I DROVE TO FRONTIER FORD DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID IT'S THE MASTER CYLINDER WHICH WAS A WRONG DIAGNOSIS AND AFTER REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER THE BRAKE WAS SOFT AND WENT HALF WAY TO THE FLOOR. *TR

DURING A BASIC OIL CHANGE, WE WERE INFORMED THE OIL PAN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE THREADS FOR THE PLUG WERE STRIPPED. THE SERVICE MANAGER, I AM BASING THIS ON WHAT WE WERE TOLD BY TRAINED FORD TECHNICIANS, STATED "THE OIL PAN IS MADE OF ALUMINUM AND IT HAS STRIPPED OUT." WHEN ASKED WHAT THE PLUG WAS MADE OF HE SAID, " STEAL.". SO NOW WE HAVE A CAR THAT HAS AN OIL PLUG THAT COULD COME OPEN AT ANY TIME BECAUSE IT HAS BECOME UNSAFE DUE TO STEAL ON ALUMINUM CREATING A HOLE LARGER THAN WAS DESIGNED. WE HAVE A PIECE OF THE PAN THAT HAS BEEN STRIPPED BY THE PLUG. SO, I AM GOING 75 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE PLUG COMES OUT BECAUSE IT NO LONGER FITS CORRECTLY. SUDDENLY MY ENGINES FREEZES UP. I'LL BE LUCKY TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT WE WILL HAVE AN ENGINE ISSUE DUE TO THE ENGINEERING OF THE OIL PAN/PLUG. AS OF NOW THEY WANT US TO PAY $485 FOR ANEW OIL PAN THAT WAS POORLY ENGINEERED. A STEAL PLUG ON AN ALUMINUM PAN IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. WE REQUEST FORD BE REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE PANS WITH STEAL ONES. *TR
