NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Ford Escape. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
After accelerating from a stoplight on a 55mph four lane highway, a thud noise came from under the hood, the RPMs went all the way up, and my car started accelerating and lurching forward before finally falling to a cruise. The gears shifted in a wild manner for 15 seconds while the car continued to cruise and I tried to slowly accelerate to keep up with the speed of traffic. I was able to pull into the right lane of the shoulderless road, turn off and exit the vehicle and get myself to safety. The road has lots of industrial facilities, so lots of trucks and commuters alike, so while standing there waiting for the local PD there were several close calls with people slamming into the back of my stopped and stalled out car. Had the car in front of me rapidly decelerated while my car was mysteriously accelerating, I could have easily rear ended them. Further, with my car stalled out in the middle of what is a shoulderless busy highway, there was a huge opportunity for either me or somebody else to have been involved in a tragic crash involving a disabled vehicle. My car was towed to a repair shop nearby and they were able to replicate the result. They advised to take it to a Ford dealership which is where I had it towed next. The dealer confirmed the torque converter failed and caused debris (metal fragments) to enter and essentially destroy the transmission. Police helped keep my vehicle and I safe with their lights and helped me push my car to the nearest cross street to wait for a tow truck. They did not investigate the issue, but one independent mechanic and the Ford dealership service tech did. There were no warning lamps, engine lights, or other symptoms prior to and during this event. Only after I stopped in the middle of the road did the standard check engine light come on. The torque converter issue is known by Ford after speaking to their corporate "Customer Care" team, and I (and others) are lucky to have avoided serious injury/incident
I drive a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium. My battery keeps draining and my car won't start. I tested my battery and it tested 12/14. Next week, car wouldn't start again. Got my car tested and stated that there is an unknown code meaning that the ECM is faulty. This falls under recall 15V40600 or what now could be 22V413000. My car isn't covered under the recall being two months shy of the production date. Additionally, I've had issues with the cooling system since I purchased the vehicle. Again, this isn't covered under the recall either.
Rear view camera not operational and working intermittently with distortion.

Vehicle would shift hard. Eventually the vehicle would rev rpm's but not shift into 1st gear and engage. There was no warning light. Initially the vehicle's gas pedal would depress without driving. Slowly the vehicle would creep into 1st gear but not drive faster than 2 mph. Turning the vehicle off and on and waiting 5 minutes allowed the vehicle to drive for a short time. The vehicle completely stopped shifting and had to be towed. Ford Dealers said they couldn't get the car in for service for over a month. This is my only vehicle. I need to get to work. I've had to rent a vehicle for over 5 weeks. An independent transmission shop is putting in a remanufactured trans for $4,700. The vehicle had trans failure at 122,000 miles. This trans shop had 4 other Ford Escapes in for transmission replacements; all were the body style of my 2014 Escape SE. There are many transmission complaints with the 2014 Ford Escape body style car. Please force Ford to recall and repair/reimburse for this awful transmission.
The shifter cable bushing went out on my vehicle and had to have it repaired on 11/1/2022. I had to pay out of pocket for this and want to know to be reimbursed for the charges.

At mileage 56,449 alert came on "steering assist failure" and I had no power steering. I drove directly to Coconut Point Ford in Estero, Fl. 10/31/2022. Part was on backorder throughout the U.S. I was able to pick up my repaired auto on 11/18. Forums have mentioned multiple issues with this model with power steering but as of yet no recall for the 2014 Escape. Total bill 3,250.17 and 350.00 car rental.
I set an appointment to take my 2014 Ford Escape into The Faricy Boys Ford Dealership in Cañon City, Colorado for a “The Works” service on 21 Oct 2022. This oil change service includes oil change, oil filter, multi point inspection and tire rotation. I took it in that morning for this service and waited in the waiting area for my vehicle to be completed. I was approached by [XXX], my Service Advisor, and told they encountered an issue. [XXX] told me my “lug nuts are swollen” and need to be replaced immediately for safety issues in addition to the fact that without new lug nuts they’re unable to do the tire rotation on my vehicle. I was told that swollen lug nuts meant there’s no way to change a tire with the provided tire wrench in the vehicle. She proceeded to tell me that they have the lug nuts in stock for just under $200.00. Sounded odd, extremely expensive and so I refused. $200.00 for lug nuts when this is a Ford issue with inferior product on an item as simple as the tires! According to what I found, “lug nuts can swell and delaminate after changes in temperature and exposure to moisture. Vehicle owners then have to try (and apparently fail) to remove the swollen lug nuts with a lug wrench supplied with the Ford. They have to replace them.” At home I looked this up and found that six models of Ford vehicles from mid 2010’s that all have the same problem. The core of the manufactured lug nuts is steel with chrome, stainless steel or aluminum to match the wheels. Now I’m in a place where my lug nuts may not come off if I have a flat, which could strand me who knows where in addition to not knowing what other long term problems these cheap lug nuts will cause all of us who own these vehicles. We should have these lug nuts replaced at no cost with correct lug nuts that are safe and won’t abandon us in unknown location, especially someone like me with Rheumatoid Arthritis!! INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
There is a safety recall on this vehicle. I never received the alert that the part was in stock. I had the actual problem happen to me where I put vehicle in park. Shifter was in Park. I exited the vehicle and it started rolling away. As I jumped into the vehicle to stop it from hitting another vehicle (fortunately it did not roll over me) , I opened the drivers door and it got caught on a large bush/tree which caused the door to hyperextend open and now the door does not close correctly at the top and it is scratched up / paint chipped. I am asking that Ford pay for fixing the door as I did what I was supposed to do (set emergency brake but it snapped right at the same time), but they are refusing to pay for the repairs to the door.
The contact's granddaughter owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Vehicle was taken to local Ford dealer for recalls and coolant issue as noted on service right up as follows; Customer states coolant issue, no visible leak and holding pressure, customer adds about 1 gallon of coolant per month. Per technician; Customer in need of engine. We have researched and we have called two major engine rebuild companies and there are no 2.4 Liter engines to be found. We called a local Ford dealer and spoke to parts department and they stated that they do not have any new 2.4 Liter engines available nor is there any projected build times. I have checked into using a 2.5 Liter and the engines are not interchangeable and basically I have a good car with no engine and cannot be traded or sold.
Coolant intrusion into the engine. Coolant was low even after filling chamber causing overheating which is a safety risk. New engine need confirmed by local auto shop. No warning signal other than low coolant. AUL extended car warranty checked the vehicle and would not cover staring the engine had “ sludge” in it.
Back up camera at times is showing upside down view, sometime squiggle lines, and sometime a message that reads camera not available. I have become used to using the camera and rely on it for backing up in in parking lots and such. I grew up using the mirrors and can still do that but the camera give extra security. My vehicle has about 78,000.00 , the camera should not be acting up. I have taken it to the local dealer and got a large quote to replace it. I did see on the news last night about a recall on this issue, but my year model was not included. This started about eight months ago. I had no idea I could file a complaint until today after calling Ford directly and being transferred to National Highway Safety Division. I am always available if someone want to inspect my vehicle. I don't drive much, as you can tell a 2014 with 78,000 miles, but when I do i like to feel like I can rely on the safety features of my vehicle.,

There is already an NHTSA Campaign on this specific issue: It is ID: 15V005000. My specific vehicle was manufactured at the Louisville plant in June of 2014 so just a month following the Ford Escape covered under this specific recall mentioned above. The car just stalls or shuts off completely. It does it inconsistently. It may do it while parked. It may do it while driving. It did it 3 times yesterday, but it may not do it again for another 2 weeks. I have taken it to 2 mechanics that tell me that there are "no codes" coming up on code readers so they do not know what to repair. I just happened across the information on the recall for the fuel pump mentioned above. The more I read about it, it absolutely sounds like the same thing going on my my 2014 Ford Escape that was manufactured the very next month in the same plant. My college age daughter drives this vehicle to and from school so I am VERY concerned. Is there a way to check the actual fuel pump number or something to see if it was one of the defective fuel pumps? We are meeting with the mechanic today to see about having the fuel pump replaced.

Car has idling issues and coolant is repeatedly leaking onto the engine, which is causing smoking and could cause a fire. Car stalls often. It was diagnosed by a non certified Ford repair shop in one day and they suggested I take it to a Ford repair shop, because there are issues with the 2014 1.6 engine in the Ford Escapes. I took it to the shop and I was told a hose was leaking and it was not the engine. Car continued to smoke and stall. I took it back and after a week I was told it needed an engine because the coolant is leaking and it is not safe to drive. Ford said because the car has 113,000 miles on it it will cost $7-$8,000 to repair. The car is paid off and is not safe to drive. I was told by the dealer that they only fix 1.5 engines, but everything I am reading says the issue is with the 1.6 engines. I contacted Ford Customer Service and they told me to contact you because there is nothing they will do. The engine light has been coming on and we have been taking it in for repair for about 2 years. It should not have taken this long to diagnose

Car detected low coolant and coolant was added two days in row. On second day the coolant was gone and car warned of high engine temperature, it stopped accelerating and warned to pull over safely while going 75mph on a freeway. Once checked, coolant was completely out and refilled again. Took to a Ford Dealership where had to pay for diagnostic because the Recall for the coolant issue was "Fixed" in 2019. Cause was determined that all the coolant flowed into Cylinder 3 leaving car with only 3 cylinders. Car won't go over 40 mph, and Ford wants thousands to fix an issue that they recalled for. Was driving 35mph and car started jerking and lost power to gas pedal. I placed it in park, and then in drive. The speedometer trusted to 110 and then it jerked some more, heard a horrible whining noise. I drove home with same issues, about 6 blocks. Then I got a transmission failure message on my dash. Could put in park. Put my e brake on. Had it towed to the dealership. Car only has 55,000 miles on it. Been meticulously maintained. There were no warnings before this incident. Dealership called and said my transmission needs to be replaced. Well we do t have 6000 to fix it and ar still making car payments. I have seen thousands of these complaints online, why isn't Ford doing something for the consumer. This should be a recall. I am not a happy customer
