Michelin Defender LTX M/S size 265/75R16. 4 new tires installed less than 60 days and 1,800 miles by Costco before incident. Tire air pressure checked prior to a trip. On the trip, 1 tire rapidly deflated without warning on the freeway in Arizona. Barely had enough time to pull off the freeway and onto the shoulder. The tire showed no punctures, or tread separation, but the tire sidewalls were wrinkled and distorted. Took tire to Costco for warranty and the tire shop could not find any internal punctures and were unable to determine as to why the tire went flat. They said they have never seen a tire fail like this.

THE FOLLOWING DAY, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE VIBRATED AND VEERED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THE TREAD SEPARATED AND THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED. I HAVE A SET OF AUTOGUARD TIRES SIZE 265/78/16 THAT WERE INSTALLED ON MY SUV APX NOVEMBER OF 2013 IN OCTOBER OF 2014 THE TIRES STARTED TO DEVELOPED CRACK ALONG THE BEAD LINE ABOVE THE RIM. THIS IS THE SAME EFFECT OR DEFECT THAT RESULTED IN THE RECALL OF AUTOGUARD TIRE SIZE 245/75/16. BOTH THE TIRE THAT WERE THE SUBJECT OF THE RECALL AS WELL AS THE TIRES THAT WERE INSTALL ON MY SUV WERE MANUFACTURES IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD AND I BELIEVE HAVE THE SAME DOT NO OF 4412. *TR

A GOODYEAR TREVA LT245/75R16 WITH 1000 MILES ON IT HAS SUFFERED SEPARATION OF THE RUBBER NEAR THE BEAD. THE INTERNAL TIRE CONSTITUENTS ARE VISIBLE. THE DEFECT RUNS (ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE) ABOUT 8" AND THE DELAMINATION GAP IS ABOUT 1/4". THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL DEFECT IS 1" LONG AND 1/8" GAP. PICTURES OF HE DEFECT ARE AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 25 MPH AND OVER, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD BECOME EXTREMELY WOBBLY. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER TIME. THE TIRES WERE TAKEN TO A TIRE SPECIALIST AND THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE TIRES EXHIBITED EXCESSIVE TREAD SEPARATION. ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES EXHIBITED VISIBLE TREAD SEPARATION AND WAS REPLACED AT THE MANUFACTURER'S EXPENSE. THE REMAINING THREE TIRES WOULD BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO LOCATE A RECALL FOR HIS BRAND AND LINE OF TIRES HOWEVER, THE RECALL DID NOT COVER HIS SPECIFIC TIRE SIZE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06T016000: TIRES: TREAD/BELT). THE REMAINING FOUR TIRES WERE NOT YET REPLACED. THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED IN 2008 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 27,000. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE WAS 136,000.
MASTERCRAFT TIRE LT265/75R SEPARATION AND FAILURE RESULTING IN PROPERTY DAMAGE AND TEMPORARY LOSS OF CONTROL. THIS TIRE WAS THE SECOND TO FAIL. THE FIRST FAILED AND WAS REMOVED BEFORE TOTAL FAILURE. THIS COMPLAINT CONCERNS GOODYEAR A/T TIRES ON A 2000 FORD EXCURSION. WHILE RIDING IN THE VEHICLE ON 7/14/09, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE. THERE WAS A HUGE IMPACT ON THE RIGHT SIDE REAR QUARTER PANEL. THE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL. NO ACCIDENT OR INJURY RESULTED. *TR

HE TESTED THE RIMS BY SUBMERGING THEM IN WATER AND CONCLUDED THAT STRESS CRACKS WERE PRESENT. THE COMPANY REPLACED THE RIMS. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING, THE RIM BLEW APART ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CONTACT PULLED ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE MANUFACTURER REQUESTED THAT HE RETURN THE RIM TO HAVE IT INSPECTED AND LATER STATED THAT THE DEFECT WAS CAUSED BY THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT RETURN THE RIM UNLESS THE CONTACT PROVIDES HIS INSURANCE INFORMATION SO THEY CAN FILE A CLAIM ON HIS BEHALF. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 126,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,000.

STEVE SMITH, 5650 PEACHTREE PARKWAY, NORCROSS, GA 30092. CERNY & IVEY ANALYZED THE TIRE AND HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE TIRE FAILED DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT HAD WORSENED OVER TIME UNTIL THE TIRE FAILED. ACCIDENT REPORT IS ON FILE WITH THE LINN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE; REPORT NUMBER 06-13921. *NM

THERE HAS BEEN NO VIBRATION WHILE DRIVING AND NO ABNORMAL BULGING. THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES OF SIDE WALL SPLITTING AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FIRESTONE COMPANY CONTACTED THE CONSUMER AND INFORMED HIM THAT THE PROBLEM WAS USUALLY CAUSED BY UNDER INFLATED OR OVER LOADED TIRES. THE REPRESENTATIVE ALSO STATED THAT FORD RECOMMEND PSI WAS 35. THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAS ALWAYS KEPT 65 PSI IN THE TIRES AS STAMPED ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRES. TRAVELING NORTH IN LIGHT RAIN ON IH 55 AT BROOKHAVEN, MS ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, MARCH 20, 2005. I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN FAILURE OF A FIRESTONE STEELTEX R4S RADIAL TIRE. LUCKILY IT WAS ON THE REAR OF MY 2000 FORD EXCURSION, AND I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER QUICKLY AND SAFELY. THE TIRE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE PLY FOR ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY AROUND THE TIRE ON THE INSIDE. THE TIRE HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT. THIS SUDDEN FAILURE IN A SIMILAR MODE AS THE OTHER FIRESTONE FAILURES LEADS ME TO BELIEVE PERHAPS THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED ALSO. I PURCHASED 4 BIG O BIG FOOT AT TIRES IN AUGUST 2003. IN THE FOUR MONTHS BETWEEN JULY 2004 AND NOVEMBER 2004, I EXPERIENCED 3 SEPARATE HIGH-SPEED CATASTROPHIC BLOW-OUTS ON 3 OF THE TIRES. IN EACH CASE, I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (65 MPH) WITH MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST WAS ON A WARM SUMMER DAY, THE SECOND WAS ON A MODERATE DAY, THE THIRD WAS AT ABOUT 35 DEGREES. THE FIRST TWO BLOW-OUTS OCCURRED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE THIRD WAS ON THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF EACH OF THE FIRST TWO TIRES, THE REMAINING THREE WHEELS WERE ROTATED. IN EACH CASE, IT WAS A STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT IN THE THIRD CASE (REAR TIRE), THE CAR SKIDDED DANGEROUSLY OUT OF CONTROL AS THE REAR END SWAYED BACK AND FORTH. HAD I NOT STEERED INTO THE SKID, I AM CERTAIN THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE ROLLED OVER. THE BIG O DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TIRES EACH TIME, BUT INSISTED THAT THE FAILURES COULD ONLY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY ENCOUNTERING SOME ROAD HAZARD WHICH CAUSED THE TIRES TO DE-PRESSURIZE QUICKLY, HEAT UP AND THEN BLOW. HOWEVER, THREE HIGH-SPEED BLOWOUTS IN FOUR MONTHS INDICATES NOT AN ISOLATED CIRCUMSTANCE OR COINCIDENCE, BUT A DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY PATTERN. *JB
