LOST BRAKE PRESSURE. FOUND LEAK COMING FROM FRT LH BRAKE LINE. FITTING BETWEEN METAL AND RUBBER BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED AND FATIGUED TO THE POINT OF FAILURE. LOST ALL BRAKE FLUID AND RUINED FRT LH RIM DUE TO CORROSIVE PROPERTY OF BRAKE FLUID. PURCHASED REPLACEMENT PART AT LOCAL DEALER. N/G BRAKE LINE AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW. *NM
ON AUGUST 2, 2006, WHILE TRAVELING IN MICHIGAN, A SPARK PLUG SUDDENLY BLEW OUT OF MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OR INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO BAY CITY, MI, WHERE A FORD DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST APPROX. $3500 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. HE SAID IT WAS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH FORD EXPEDITIONS. MY CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 120000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME. I KEPT THE SPARK PLUG AND COIL ATTACHMENT, AND IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE GROOVES ON THE PLUG GAVE WAY OR WERE STRIPPED. *NM
DRIVING AT 25 MPH IN RESIDENTIAL AREA OF CLEVELAND OH SPARK PLUG #3 BLEW OUT OF HEAD, LEAVING ME STRANDED FOR 2 DAYS WAITING TO GET REPAIRS FINISHED. 5.4 TRITON ENGINE, PROPERLY MAINTAINED WITH 59,000. MILES ON IT. *NM
WHILE DRIVING A LOUD "POP" WAS HEARD FOLLOWED BY AN EXHAUST-TYPE SOUND EMANATING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN 4 BLOCKS TO OUR HOME WHERE INSPECTION REVEALED THE BLOWN PLUG. *JB
1999 FORD EXPEDITION BURNED IN GARAGE, DESTOYING GARAGE AND DAMAGING HOUSE. NOT DRIVEN FOR OVER 12 HOURS. BURNED SO BADLY INVESTIGATORS COULD NOT DETERMINE HOW IT STARTED. RECALL WAS DONE FOR CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. *NM
IN FEB OF 2005 MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION WITH THE 5.4 V-8 BLEW THE PASSENGER SIDE 3RD SPARK PLUG RIGHT OUT OF THE HEAD. THE CAR HAD APOX. 95,000 MILES ON IT AND FORD SAID WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER IT. IT WOULD TAKE 3,500 $ TO FIX. SO I TOWED IT AWAY FROM GRASS VALLLEY FORD, A DECIDED TO HAVE A MECANIC FUP A HELI COIL. THAT LASTED LITTLE OVER A YEAR AND IN JUNE OF 2006 THE SAME PLUG SHOT OUT. I THINK THIS IS FORDS PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE DEALED WITH.
FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 6 MONTHS I HAD AN ENGINE SPARK PLUG EJECTION IN MY 1999 EXPEDITION. THE SPARK PLUG DETACHED FROM THE CYLINDER AND WAS EJECTED FROM THE ENGINE. I HEARD A LOUD POP WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE FOLLOWED BY A LOUD, REPETITIVE CLICKING OR POPPING SOUND. I ALSO LOST SOME POWER WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE DID NOT STALL. I DID SMELL GAS WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. I WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE REPAIR SHOP. *JB
REAR AIR BAG SUSPENSION FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS ALMOST ON THE GROUND AND THE GAS TANK WAS BELOW THE VEHICLE'S RIM. *NM
1999 FORD EXPEDITION BOUGHT BRAND NEW AT SERRAMONTE FORD IN COLMA CA. SERVICED IN STRICT ACCORDANCE EVERY 5000 MILES PER FORD OWNER MANUAL AND AT THE SAME FORD DEALERSHIP EXCLUSIVELY. LOST ENGINE, TIMING CHAIN AT 55,000 MILES, LOST TRANSMISSION AT 130000 MILES. *JB
THE BUCKLE ON MY SEAT BELTS IN THE BACK BROKE. THAT IS VERY UNSAFE. *TR
LAST THURSDAY MY BRAKES FAILED DUE TO A RUPTURE IN THE HYDRAULIC FLUID STEEL TUBING. THE VEHICLE IS A HEAVY SUV, AND BEING AN ACTIVE SAILOR, I USE THE VEHICLE TO TOW BOAT TRAILERS. WE HAD JUST HOOKED UP A LOADED BOAT TRAILER, AND AS I GOT BACK INTO THE CAR, I NOTED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. WE PROCEEDED ABOUT 300 YARDS ON A LEVEL SIDE ROAD AND TESTED THE BRAKES WITH THE SAME RESULT. WE NOTED A LOT OF BRAKE FLUID UNDER THE CAR. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO NEWPORT FORD IN MIDDLETOWN, RHODE ISLAND. THEY SHOWED ME THE RUPTURE SITE, AND THE RUST OVER THE ENTIRE SYSTEM OF STEEL TUBING. THEY INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TUBING TO ALL FOUR (4)WHEELS, FOR A COST OF OVER $700. THEY ALSO INDICATED TO ME THAT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE IS QUITE COMMON. THE DEALERSHIP HANDLES ABOUT 2-3 INCIDENTS PER MONTH. I ASKED WHY THE TUBING WAS NOT COPPER, AND THEY INDICATED THAT MANY AMERICAN CAR MANUFACTURERS HAVE SWITCHED FROM COPPER TO STEEL. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRIP, FOR IF IT HAD HAPPEN GOING DOWN A MAJOR HILL IN THE CENTER OF NEWPORT, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN GRAVE CONSEQUENCES. I HAVE TWO COMMENTS. ONE IS THAT IF THIS FAILURE IS AS COMMON AS I WAS TOLD, I WOULD HOPE THERE WOULD BE A MAJOR POLICY CHANGE AND A RECALL. CARS OFTEN RECALLED, FOR RATHER MINOR ISSUES, AND I THINK THIS IS MUCH MORE SERIOUS. *JB
1999 FORD EXPEDITION 5.4 LITER V8 EDDIE BAUER - VEHICLE ODOMETER BEGAN TO FAIL INTERMITTENTLY, THEN RADIO, THEN RANDOM DASH LIGHTS, I.E. 4X4 - EVEN AFTER CAR TURNED OFF. ALL OF THE ABOVE AND THEN SOME WENT HAYWIRE AND CAR STALLED OUT. GOT TO SAFE PLACE W/OUT POWER STEERING, BRAKES, ETC. TOOK TO MECHANIC AND HAD ALTERNATOR REPLACED. AFTER 3 DAYS SAME EVENT OCCURRED. MECHANIC REPLACED ALTERNATOR AGAIN AND BATTERY - SAID BATTERY WAS PROBLEM NOW. AFTER 3 DAYS EVENT HAS BEGUN TO RECUR. CO-WORKER HAS 2000 MODEL AND IS EXPERIENCING SAME PROBLEMS. NO INFO ON RECALL BUT INTERNET REVEALS SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. *NM
AFTER TAKING MY EXPEDITION FOR SERVICE FOR AN INOPERABLE HORN, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INDICATED THAT THE AIR BAG WAS DEFECTIVE. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER RECALL # 05V388000; VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, THERE IS A REOCCURRING PROBLEM WHILE TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE. AFTER INSERTING THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE DASH PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE DID NOT START. WHEN THIS INTERMITTENT PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE STARTED AFTER SITTING FOR A FEW MINUTES. BUT, AFTER THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT THE VEHICLE DID NOT START AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND DETERMINED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. AND CHARGED THE CONTACT FOR THE WORK. *AK
SPARK PLUG BLOWING FROM CYLINDER HEAD. *NM
WHEN THE CAR IS HOT IT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTS INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE. FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND SENT AN ADVISORY TO DEALERSHIP SHOPS. THEY ADVISED THIS IS PROBLEM AND MUST REPLACE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE MOTOR WHICH IS AT A COST OF 525.00. THEN AND ONLY THEN IF THAT DOESN'T FIX IT YOU HAVE TO REPLACE 2 OTHER SWITCHES WHICH THEN COSTS AN ADDITIONAL 600-800.00. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHY THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED A RECALL BY FORD SINCE THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE SHOULD THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE KICK IN WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE WHEELS WOULD LOCK UP AND ALL PEOPLE IN THE CAR WOULD BE KILLED. I HAVE FILE A COMPLAINT WITH FORD AND THEY ADVISED THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT SINCE THE CAR IS A 1999. ACCORDING TO OUR FORD DEALERSHIP THIS CAN HAPPEN IN 1999 THROUGH 2002 FORD EXPEDITIONS, EXPLORERS AND EXCURSIONS AS WELL AS THERE F SERIES TRUCKS. *JB
I HAD JUST LEFT A STOP LIGHT WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POP. IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING BLEW UP! THE CAR WAS REALLY LOUD AND RAN ROUGH AFTER THAT. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE SHOP. THEY SAID WE BLEW A SPARK PLUG AND STRIPPED THE THREADS THAT HOLD IT IN PLACE. AT A COST OF $1,600 TO REPAIR WE ARE HAVING A FRIEND LOOK AT IT. HE THINKS HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO ORDER A KIT CALLED TIMESERT TO POSSIBLY FIX IT. I HOPE IT WORKS BECAUSE IT WILL SAVE US A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY. AFTER INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM ONLINE, IT DEFINITELY IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR FORD. THEY MUST ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY. *NM
APPROXIMATELY AT 8 AM, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD BANG UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. SHE WAS DRIVING A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD POPPING NOISE. AFTER ARRIVING AND STARTING THE CAR TO HEAR WHAT WAS GOING ON, I KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. 5 YEARS AGO I DROVE A 1999 F250 FORD WITH A V10 AND IT DID THE SAME THING. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AGREED A SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE ENGINE ON THE EXPEDITION ON THE #3 CYLINDER. THEY REPAIRED IT BY PUTTING A PLUG INSERT (HELI-COIL) IN. THEY PUT THE INSERT IN WHILE THE HEAD WAS STILL ON THE VEHICLE. NOW THREE WEEKS LATER THE RODS ON #3 AND #7 PISTONS ARE BENT AND THE VEHICLE IS INOPERABLE. THE DEALERSHIP ONLY OPTION TO US WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE AT A COST OF NEARLY $4,500. *JB
I AM A SCHOOL TEACHER THAT DRIVES A 1999 EXPEDITION V8. I WAS ON MY WAY TO SCHOOL TWO WEEKS AGO AND HEARD A LOUD BANG COME FROM UNDER MY HOOD. IT THEN STARTED TO SOUND LIKE A JOHN DEER TRACTOR. I HAD MY SPARK PLUGS REPLACED LAST YEAR AND THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE THE SAME AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE SAME MECHANIC THAT REPLACED SPARK PLUGS LAST YEAR AND TOLD ME THAT THE PLUG BLEW MY THREAD OUT AND THAT IT MIGHT NEED SOME SERIOUS ENGINE REPAIRS BECAUSE OF IT. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE FORD VEHICLES. APPARENTLY IT IS GOING TO COST ME 3,000 TO FIX. I AM A TEACHER AND FIND IT RIDICULOUS TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS WHEN THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY COMPLAINTS OVER THE SAME ENGINEERING PROBLEM! FORD NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. AFTER SEEING SO MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE, IT REALLY MAKES ME UPSET AND FEEL EMOTIONAL STRESS. THE NEED TO RECALL THESE ALUMINUM ENGINES. *JB
MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION HAD A SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES. *JB
1999 FORD EXPEDITION-PERFECTLY MAINTAINED. 37000 MILES ON ODOMETER-TRANSMISSION BLOW OUT. JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN, ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT DUE TO LOSS OF POWER. THIS IS THE SECOND FORD VEHICLE OWNED THAT HAD A TRANSMISSION FAILURE! FIRST ONE AT ONLY 8000 MILES! UNDER WARRANTY FOR THAT ONE. FORD WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM. WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER FORD AGAIN!*JB
GENERAL COMPLAINT ABOUT VEHICLES THAT ALLOW MOVEMENT WITHOUT STEPPING ON THE BRAKE. MY FRIEND HAD A TAHOE AND HIS GRANDSON GOT IN THE CAR TURNED THE IGNITION KEY NOT STARTING THE CAR, BUT TWO CLICKS AND THE CAR ROLLED, KID JUMPED OUT AND WAS CRUSHED BY THE TIRE. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SAFETY DEVICE THAT REQUIRES A FOOT ON THE BRAKE THAT SHOULD BE REQUIRED IN ALL CARS. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 7 AND AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS. I TESTED MY FORD EXPEDITION AND IT DOES NOT HAVE THE SAFETY FEATURE. *NM
I HAVE A 1999 MODEL FORD EXPEDITION. I HAD HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. THE PEDAL EFFORT TO STOP WAS SOMETIMES VERY HIGH TO MAKE EVEN A GENTLE STOP. THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT. I AM CAPABLE OF ENOUGH FORCE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO ALWAYS STOP SAFELY BUT THE CHANGES IN EFFORT REQUIRED WERE SURPRISING. THE FRONT PADS AND ROTORS WERE CHANGED LAST YEAR. THE REAR BRAKES WERE ALSO CHECKED. THE BRAKE SYSTEM SEEMED TO ACT LIKE THE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING TO PROVIDE THE VACUUM FOR THE BRAKE BOOSTER. AFTER SOME CLOSE CALLS ON THE WORK COMMUTE, I DECIDED TO CHECK THE VACUUM HOSES BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THIS VEHICLE HAS THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM LINE RUNNING ACROSS THE FIREWALL BEHIND THE ENGINE, CONNECTING TO A 'Y' TO INCLUDE THE PCV VALVE AND THEN ONWARD TO WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. ON MY EXPEDITION THE HOSES NEAR THE 'Y' FOR THE PCV VALVE AND THE HOSE ON THE MANIFOLD WERE SOFT AND APPEARED COLLAPSED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. THE HOSES WERE NOT REINFORCED LIKE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM SOURCE HOSES ON OTHER SYSTEMS I HAVE SEEN. THESE LOOKED LIKE BIGGER DIAMETER VERSIONS OF THE COMMON ALL RUBBER VACUUM HOSE. I REPLACED THE SOFT, COLLAPSED HOSES WITH BRAID REINFORCED 3/8 FUEL LINE HOSE AND NOW I HAVE POWER BRAKES EVERY TIME. A SMALL PERSON COULD NOT STOP AN EXPEDITION SAFELY WITHOUT POWER BRAKES. THE INTERMITTENT LOSS OF VACUUM BOOST WAS SURPRISING AND FRIGHTENING. I STILL HAVE THE HOSES I TOOK OFF. *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR NORMAL ROUTINE SERVICE, A LEAK IN THE HEAD GASKET WAS DISCOVERED. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING REPAIRS.
LEAKING RIGHT HEAD GASKET DUE TO FAULTY MANUFACTURING. OIL LEAK IS DRIPPING ON THE MUFFLER POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD AND POLLUTION. *JB
WHENEVER THERE IS A HEAVY RAIN OR SNOW, SEVERAL OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS IN MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION BEGAN TO FUNCTION IRREGULARLY. THE COMPONENTS FUNCTION WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON OR OFF. EXAMPLES OF THE IRREGULAR ACTIVITY INCLUDE THE RADIO TURNING ON AND OFF BY ITSELF, WINDSHIELD WIPERS TURNING ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES, HEAT AND AIR UNIT TURNING ON AND OFF BY ITSELF, INTERIOR LIGHTS TURNING ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES, AND THE RUNNING BOARD LIGHTS TURNING ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES. SEVERAL TIMES I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL STOP WORKING FOR 1-2 MINUTES. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR NO LONGER HAS A REFLECTIVE COAT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE DEALERSHIP.
1999 FORD EXPEDITION, EDDIE BAUER WITH 67,000 MILES. DURING/AFTER RAIN CERTAIN ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS MALFUNCTION (I.E. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM, LIGHTING, WINDSHIELD WIPERS (FRONT AND REAR), RADIO, CLIMATE CONTROL (IMPORTANT IN ALASKA). PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING. AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE ($350.00) BUT THIS FAILED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIANS STATED THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO OR WHY THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING. *JB
I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CABLE HOLDING THE SPARE TIRE UNDER THE CAR BROKE AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE TIRE FELL ONTO THE ROAD AS WELL AS THE PIECE OF METAL THAT HOLDS THE TIRE IN PLACE. LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH. NO OTHER DAMAGE OCCURRED TO MY CAR OR ANY OTHERS. IT WAS THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE, I LOWER AND RAISE IT ONCE IN A WHILE TO CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. *JB
THE SPARE TIRE CABLE SNAPPED ON FORD EXPEDITION AT HIGH SPEED AND ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS. THE TIRE CROSSED THE MEDIAN, AFTER BEING NARROWLY MISSED BY THE PERSON BEHIND ME, AND WENT INTO OPPOSING TRAFFIC.*AK THANKFULLY, NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED BUT I WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY!
#3 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF ENGINE TAKING THE THREAD INSERT WITH IT. *AK
FORD EXPEDITION - SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT (ONE THROUGH CYLINDER HEAD, 2 COIL) 3 TOTAL AND COUNTING. *NM
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WAS A RECALL 05V388000 CONCERNING THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL SERVICE DEALER FOR REPAIR UNDER THE RECALL. WHEN THE DEALER MADE THE REPAIRS THE 5 AMP FUSE IN ONE OF THE CIRCUITS WAS REPLACED WITH A 15 AMP FUSE WITHOUT THE CONSUMERS KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INDICATED THE DEALER SHOULD NOT HAVE REPLACED THE FUSE WITH A LARGE AMP WHEN COMPLETING THE RECALL WORK. AS RESULT OF A LARGER AMP FUSE BEING INSTALLED IN THE SMALLER CIRCUIT THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS WERE MELTED. THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WILL NO LONGER DISENGAGE, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND THE FRONT DEFROSTER WILL NOT WORK. THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THE LARGER FUSE WHEN INSPECTING THE FUSES BECAUSE OF THE OTHER ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. *JB UPDATED 2/28/2006 - *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING THERE WAS A LOUD BANG IN THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER AND WAS UNCONTROLLABLE. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND THE SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED. ONE MONTH LATER ANOTHER SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN AGAIN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WERE THE SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED. *AK

I PURCHASED A 1999 FORD WINSTAR IN 2005 AND MY TRANSMISSION STARTED TO GO 3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED FOR 1500.00 WHILE SEARCHING YOUR SITE I DISCOVERED MANY DEFECTS AND RECALLS TO MY VAN WHICH I PLAN TO TAKE TO A FORD DEALER. I WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE IS A RECALL FOR 1999 FORD WINDSTAR TRANSMISSIONS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE REAR VIEW MIRRORS ON THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER DOORS HAVE DETERIORATED. THE CONTACT HAS POOR VISIBILITY WHEN DRIVING IN ONCOMING AND INCOMING TRAFFIC. HE HAS NOT YET NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER TO REPORT THE DEFECT. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT HE WOULD NEED TO NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 79,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
BOTH FRONT STABILIZER LINKS HAVE FAILED IN OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. INITIAL FAILURE WAS ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO; SECOND FAILURE WAS LAST DEC. BOTH FAILURES WERE DISCOVERED WHILE CHANGING OIL . *JB
I MUST REPLACE MY INTAKE MANIFOLD DUE TO A LEAK ON MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. I SEE THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON OTHER FORD MODELS FOR THAT YEAR BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT DOESN'T APPLY TO WINDSTARS. I FEEL IT SHOULD BE SINCE I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? *JB
I ALMOST FLIPPED MY WIFE'S 1999 FORD EXPEDITION ON CHRISTMAS EVENING (YESTERDAY) WHEN BOTH STABILIZER BAR LINKS SHEARED OFF. MY FAMILY, INCLUDING FOUR CHILDREN, WERE IN THE CAR. WE WERE PROCEEDING ON A RURAL ROAD AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT WHEN THE HANDLING WENT OUT AND THE VEHICLE STARTED DRIFTING ALL OVER THE ROAD. ANYTHING OVER 40 MPH BECAME UNSAFE AROUND TURNS. IT COST ME $84 TO REPLACE THE PARTS TODAY (SELF-INSTALLED). IT COULD HAVE KILLED MY FAMILY. I WANT FORD TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE PARTS AND I WANT THEM TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER A RECALL WOULD BE PRUDENT. I OWNED TWO 1995 EXPLORERS AND BOTH WERE RECALLED FOR THIS DEFECT (WHICH IS THE ONLY REASON I KNEW TO LOOK FOR IT). I AM A LICENSED ATTORNEY. NOTICE OF A DEFECT GIVES RISE TO NEGLIGENCE. NOT ONLY DOES A QUALITY AND SAFETY ISSUE LIKE THIS ONE DAMAGE FORD'S REPUTATION, ECONOMICALLY IT LESS EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE THE PARTS THAN TO WAIT FOR THE FATALITIES TO MATERIALIZE AS THESE VEHICLES AGE. PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN IN NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN SUDDENLY SMOKE SMELL AND LOUD RHYTHMIC BANGING FROM UNDER HOOD. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO SHOP. THEY DISCOVERED A SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN THROUGH THE HEAD, REQUIRING A HEAD REPLACEMENT. SUBSEQUENTLY I DISCOVERED THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH FORD VEHICLES WITH THE TRITON ENGINE-DESIGN DEFECT IN THAT THEIR ARE ONLY 5-6 THREADS HOLDING SPARK PLUGS IN LEAVING THEM SUSCEPTIBLE TO THIS TYPE OF FAILURE DURING NORMAL OPERATION. FORD WOULD NOT ASSIST ME WITH REPAIRS STATING THERE WAS NO RECALL DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE. *JB
1999 FORD EXPEDITION - BLOW SPARK PLUG OUT OF NUMBER 3 CYLINDER. RESULT IS LOSS OF POWER AND VERY POOR DRIVABILITY AT LOW SPEEDS. ALSO, GAS SMELL FROM LEADING INJECTOR IN NOW OPEN CYLINDER. FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT TOWING WHEN THE PLUG BLEW, OR THE LOSS OF POWER COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN UNSAFE SITUATION. FORD DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE CYL. HEAD ($3,000), DOESN'T ACKNOWLEDGE ANY DEFECT THAT FORD HAS AUTHORIZED. SEVERAL OTHER MECHANICS INDICATE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS ENGINE, DEALS WITH INSUFFICIENT NUMBER OF THREADS TO HOLD THE PLUG IN THE ALUMINUM HEAD. *NM
CONSUMER HAD 1999 FORD EXPEDITION SIDE MIRRORS REPLACED DUE TO BUBBLES IN MIRROR. *TS AS A RESULT THE CONSUMER VISIBILITY WAS REDUCED, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE MIRROR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER REPLACED IT AT HIS EXPENSE. *NM
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION. WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKES THE RMPS REVVED VERY HIGH. WHEN LIFTING FOOT OFF THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. HE EVENTUALLY DEPRESSED THE BRAKES HARD ENOUGH SO THAT THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT IN USE. HE TOOK HIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THEY TOLD HIM THAT THE PCV HAD A LEAK IN THE VACUUM SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE IS NOW BEING REPAIRED.*AK

DT: CONTACT STATED WHILE STOPPING AT A STOP LIGHT HEARD A LOUD POP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP ,WHERE THEY FOUND THE ENGINE HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE REPAIRS WILL BE MADE AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. *AK UPDATED 03/20/06. *JB
MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION HAS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH A SUPPOSES SAFETY FEATURE. THE "DOOR AJAR" WARNING LIGHT COMES ON EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO DOOR OPEN. PART OF THIS SYSTEM TURNS ON THE DOME LIGHT AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 5 AND 18 MPH. THIS LIGHT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SEE OUT THE WINDOWS. IMAGINE YOURSELF BACKING OUT OF AN UNLIT DRIVEWAY AT NIGHT AND NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE IF THERE IS A CHILD APPROACHING THE REAR OF YOUR CAR. THERE IS NO WAY TO TURN OFF OR OVER-RIDE THE DOME LIGHT SHORT OF REMOVING THE BULBS. FORD TRIED TO FIX THE PROBLEM ONCE AND IT WORKED PROPERLY FOR A WHILE, BUT THE PROBLEM RETURNED. IT IS FRIGHTENING WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR SIGHT IMPAIRED. I WOULD RATHER HAVE THE DOME LIGHT WARNING SYSTEM DISABLED THAT HAVE IT MALFUNCTION. THE ODDS OF AN INCIDENT HAPPENING DUE TO IMPAIRED VISION ARE SURELY GREATER THAN OF AN OPEN DOOR NOT BEING NOTICED AND SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSING AN INCIDENT. *NM
WHEN TURNING INTO PARKING LOT ENTRANCE AFTER COMPLETE STOP, THE STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME LOOSE AND I FELT A VIBRATION AND HEARD A SKIDDING NOISE FROM ONE TIRE. THE STEERING WAS LOOSE BUT RESPONSIVE WHILE I TURNED INTO A PARKING SPOT. AFTER THAT, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN WITH THE STEERING WHEEL. THE BALL JOINT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE TIE ROD HAD SEPARATED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THE TIE ROD WAS REPLACED. THE DEALER DISCARDED THE OLD PARTS. *NM
