TL* - THE CONTACT CALLED REGARDING 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HAD DRIVEN THE VEHICLE EARLIER AND APPROXIMATELY 3-4 HOURS LATER THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. THE CONTACT STATED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOOK PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SOME OF THE VINYL SIDING ON HIS HOME WAS DAMAGED BY THE FIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT STATED HE RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE IN NOV 2006. HE HAD ATTEMPTED TO GET THE RECALL WORK DONE, HOWEVER THE FORD DEALER DID NOT HAVE ANY AVAILABLE APPOINTMENTS. THE MANUFACTURER HAS DENIED THE CLAIM STATING THE CONSUMER DID NOT RESPOND TO THE RECALL LETTER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000 MILES.
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING HIS 2000 FORD EXPEDITION (67000 FAILURE MILEAGE) HE WAS HEARING A CLUNKING SOUND ONLY WHEN TURNING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT RETURNED HOME THEN RAISED THE VEHICLE UP AND GOT UNDER THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT PART OF THE FRAME WHICH HELD THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE TOGETHER HAD RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER AND THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THE RADIATOR MOUNT WAS CORRODED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED.
I OWN A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. WITHIN THE LAST MONTH, I WOULD TURN THE KEY TO CRANK MY TRUCK AND NO SOUND. NOTHING WOULD TURN ON. THE ELECTRICAL, TOTALLY DEAD. I WOULD JUMP IT OFF AND IT RAN FINE FOR 2 DAYS AND THEN THE SAME WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE FOUND THAT A LEAKING WINDSHIELD IS THE PROBLEM. IT IS LEAKING AND CAUSING MY GEM MODULE AND FUSE BOX TO GET WET. THIS CAN CAUSE A FIRE AS EVERYONE KNOWS AS WELL AS UNWANTED ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY WHEN THE TRUCK IS UNATTENDED. IT IS ALSO AFFECTING MY RADIO WHICH WILL NOT TURN ON THEN TURN ON BY ITSELF. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND I HAVE READ WHERE MANY EXPEDITION OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH WINDSHIELD LEAKAGE CAUSING NO STARTS AND ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THIS SHOULD BE FIXED AT FORDS EXPENSE CONSIDERING IT WAS NOT THE FAULT OF THE OWNER FORD HAS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE WITH THEIR WINDSHIELDS. AS YOU MUST KNOW THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD THAT COULD RESULT IN THE DEATH OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. IT IS A DEFECT FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED NOW TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE OR POSSIBLE DEATH BY FIRE. IF FORD STANDS BY THEIR PRODUCTS THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO PROVE THAT TO THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS. *JB
ON JAN 31, 2007 IN THE PARKING LOT AT 9935 WALKER IN CYPRESS, CA. THE INCIDENT (FIRE) STARTED APPROXIMATELY AT 5:30 PM. THE 2000 FORD EXPEDITION WAS PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY 1:00 HR BEFORE THE FIRE STARTED, A PASSER BY SAW THE FIRE START IN THE LEFT FRONT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. MY SON DRIVING THE CAR AT THE TIME CAME OUT FROM WORK AND THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. ORANGE COUNTY FIRE AND CYPRESS POLICE DEPARTMENT WAS ON SITE. WHEN I ARRIVED THE FIRE WAS OUT, AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RULED OUT ARSON. A PASSER BY IN ANOTHER FORD EXPEDITION TOLD US AT THE SITE THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL SWITCH. I LOOKED INTO IT ON THE INTERNET AND YES THERE IS, 2000 FORD EXPEDITION RECALL 05V017000 RELEASED ON 27 JAN 2005. I AM THE SECOND OR THIRD PARTY OWNER AND DIDN'T KNOW ANY THING ABOUT THE RECALL. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY THE NEXT DAY. *JB
MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION HAS CAUSED US NUMEROUS HEADACHES AND NEAR ACCIDENTS AS A RESULT OF RAIN ENTERING THE VEHICLE DUE TO A DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD INSTALLATION. ONCE THE RAIN WATER ENTERS THE DRIVER SIDE DASH PANEL ( UNDERSIDE ) AND COMES IN CONTACT WITH ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS MOUNTED THERE, NUMEROUS FAILURES OCCUR, SUCH AS : WINDSHIELD WIPERS QUIT WORKING, INTERIOR AND DASH PANEL LIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF, AND EVENTUALLY QUIT WORKING. THE SAFETY SWITCH WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO BE PLACED IN DRIVE WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE ALSO FAILS ONCE THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF. THESE PROBLEMS ARE NOT JUST A NUISANCE, BUT A SAFETY HAZARD, AND AFTER SPEAKING TO OTHER EXPEDITION OWNERS AND READING NUMEROUS COMMON STORIES OF THE SAME PROBLEM, I FEEL THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED ACCORDINGLY. IN CLOSING I WOULD LIKE TO STATE THAT MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON A VERY BUSY INTERSTATE IN THE RAIN WHEN SHE EXPERIENCED OUR LATEST FAILURE. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, IT WAS DEFINITELY A CLOSE CALL, AND COULD HAVE BEEN POTENTIALLY FATAL. WE MAY NOT BE SO LUCKY THE NEXT TIME.... *JB
WATER IS LEAKING IN FROM THE WINDSHIELD ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE WATER IS THEN ENTERING THE VEHICLE AND AFFECTING THE FUSE BOX AND THE GEM MODULE. IT DOES VERY WEIRD THINGS TO THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE, WINDSHIELD WIPERS QUIT WORKING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, RADIO TURNS OFF ONCE VEHICLE IS PUT IN DRIVE, RUNNING LIGHTS DO NOT WORK, BATTERY DIES, JUST TO NAME A FEW THE LIST GOES ON AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARE VERY DANGEROUS IN SOME CASES. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE IN THE RAIN AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HAVE NO WIPERS. LET ME TELL YOU NOT GOOD. THE DEALER WANTS AN ARM AND A LEG TO FIX IT, MONEY I DO NOT HAVE AFTER SPENDING 15K ON A VEHICLE. SO HELP ME ANYTHING HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE AND THERE WILL BE A LAWSUIT. TAKE A LOOK AROUND ON THE INTERNET AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS MAYBE THOUSANDS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. *NM
ON JANUARY 16, 2007 MY WIFE DROVE OUR 2000 EDDIE BAUER EXPEDITION TO WORK AS USUAL PARKED N A COVERED PARKING GARAGE AND WENT TO WORK. AT THE END OF THE DAY SHE ATTEMPTED TO START HER CAR AND IT WAS TOTALLY DEAD AND WOULD NOT START. SHE THEREFORE HAD TO GET JUMP STARTED IN ORDER TO GET HOME. ON 1-17-07 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND HAD THEM EVALUATE AND DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. SEEMS THAT THE GEM AND CJB WERE WATER DAMAGED AND CREATING SIGNIFICANT ELECTRICAL SHORTS THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLES OPERATING SYSTEM. WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF THE FAN MOTOR WOULD ACTUALLY CONTINUE TO BLOW EVEN WITH THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION. ALSO THE CAR AT TIMES WOULD NOT TURN OFF WITH THE KEY. YOU CAN TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AND THE CAR WOULD STILL RUN. ANYWAY, THE DEALER INDICATES THAT THE WINDSHIELD WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND SEALED AS THIS WAS THE SOURCE OF THE WATER DAMAGE. I QUESTIONED THE VALIDITY OF THE DIAGNOSIS AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR INDICATED THAT THEY WERE WORKING ON 2 MORE TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE TOTAL COST OF THE REPAIR IS GOING TO BE $1150 TO REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD THE GEM AND CJB. I HAVE BEEN READING UP ON THIS PROBLEM AND FINE THAT THIS PROBLEM IS PRETTY WIDE SPREAD IN FORD EXPEDITIONS AND WANT TO MAKE MY PARTICULAR SITUATION A MATTER OF RECORD WITH THE NHTSA IN AN EFFORT TO ADD TO THE NUMBER OF CONSUMERS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE HAS A LONG HISTORY OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WHICH WERE CORRECTED UNDER A EXTENDED WARRANTY. I AM CERTAIN THAT THIS WINDSHIELD LEAK PROBLEM IS THE SOURCE OF MY LONG STANDING PROBLEMS. *JB

TL* - THE 2000 FORD EXPEDITION'S SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH OVERHEATED AND CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CONTACT SAW SMOKE IN THE VEHICLE. THE IGNITION WAS OFF AND THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BY HER NEIGHBOR THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL COMPARTMENT. THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND WAS INJURED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. PER NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 05V017000; THIS CONDITION COULD LEAD TO A FIRE. I TOOK MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION XLT IN TO HUNTINGTON BEACH FORD TO BE SERVICED DUE TO R.P.M. FLUCTUATION AND A SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT. THEY CONDUCTED A DIAGNOSIS AND STATED I WOULD NEED A I.A.C. PART. THE NEW I.A.C. DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM SO I TOOK IT BACK TO H.B. FORD AND THEY STATED I WOULD NEED A D.P.F.E. SENSOR. I HAD THEM REPLACE THAT WHICH DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE R.P.M. FLUCTUATION WAS STILL EVIDENT. I WENT BACK TO H.B. FORD AND THEY DIAGNOSED A NEW THROTTLE BODY. I GAVE THEM THE O.K. TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY CALLED ME A COUPLE DAYS LATER TO INFORM ME THAT THAT DID NOT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM SO I WILL NEED TO PAY AN EXTRA $400 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC FEE SO THEY CAN CHECK ALL THE WIRING. THE MANAGER HAS STATED THEY BELIEVE IT IS COMING FROM THE WIRING SYSTEM? WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING ELSE WHEN THEY CANNOT PINPOINT THE PROBLEM? *NM

DISCOUNT TIRE ADVISED BY ME TO NOTIFY DUNLOP, DUNLOP CALLED ONCE MONDAY BASICALLY ASKING FOR THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT (DISCOUNT TIRE COULD NOT REACH ANYONE OVER WEEKEND AT DUNLOP). I HAVE THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT AT MY HOME. I BELIEVE THESE TIRES SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA IMMEDIATELY. DISCOUNT TIRE HAMPTON EMPLOYEES WERE GRACIOUS, RETAINED OTHER 3 TIRES, REPLACED WITH 4 KELLY TIRES. *NM
LEAK IN DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD WHICH LEAKS INTO FUSE BOX CAUSING SEVERAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, ENGINE REVS ON ITS OWN, STARTS BY ITSELF, WINDSHIELDS WIPERS TURN ON AND OFF, RADIO WORKS THAN TURNS OFF, HEAD LIGHTS TURN OFF WHILE DRIVING NOTE HAVE HAD IT INTO DEALERSHIP AND REPAIRED AND IT STILL DOING THE PROBLEMS, WAS TOLD BY THE TECH IT WAS A LEAK AND THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GUARANTEE THE WORK. HAPPENS EVERY TIME IT SNOWS OR RAINS HEAVILY. *JB
MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION LEAKS FROM THE WINDSHIELD DURING HEAVY RAINS, AND WATER COMES INTO THE CABIN AREA. THE WATER ALSO HAS CAUSED MY GEM (GENERAL ELECTRONIC MODULE) TO MALFUNCTION, MAKING MY HVAC BLOWER TO SPONTANEOUSLY TURN ON AFTER I TURN OFF THE VEHICLE AND REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. THIS CAUSES MY BATTERY TO RUN DOWN. I WOULD EXPECT THAT THIS KIND OF MALFUNCTION COULD LEAD TO MORE SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE FIRES DUE TO UNWANTED ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT UNATTENDED, A FIRE ERUPTED FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA WITHOUT WARNING. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ALERTED, AND EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. THE POLICE WERE ALERTED, AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE FIRE DAMAGE, THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER TO AWAIT INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
RAIN OR SNOW CAUSES MULTIPLE FAILURES IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. MOST RECENTLY, THE BLOWER FAN FAILED TO OPERATE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING. ONCE THE IGNITION WAS SWITCHED OFF THE BLOWER FAN WOULD RUN. IN ADDITION, THE WIPERS AND RADIO WOULD ONLY WORK WHEN THE TRUCK WAS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT I HAD TO PULL OVER AND WIPE THE INSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. THIS IS THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW THAT THESE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY NAME TO THE LIST OF VEHICLES THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE LEAKING WINDSHIELD. NHTSA DEFECT INVESTIGATION #EA05015. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION WITH TWO OTHER VEHICLES. BOTH FRONTAL AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOYED. ALL THREE INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN THE COLLISION WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES RANGING FROM HEAD CONCUSSIONS TO SCRAPES AND BRUISES. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN AT THE SCENE OF THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP, HOWEVER THERE WERE NO INSPECTIONS DONE PER THE REQUEST OF THE CONTACT.
VEHICLE'S RADIO, HEAT REMAINED ON EVEN WITH KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED WHILE PARKED. THE FIRE BEGAN IN THE FRONT END, AND BURNED THE ENTIRE VEHICLE EXCEPT FOR A SMALL PORTION OF THE REAR END. THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS, AND WAS NOT SEEN BY A DEALER. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL# 05V388000 WHICH PERTAINED TO THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
AFTER THE TRUCK 100,000 MILES SERVICE AND WAS GIVING A GREEN ON ALL AREAS OF FORD QUALITY REPORT, I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK THREE DAYS LATER AFTER IT RAIN OUR AREA, I WAS TOLD THE COIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NOT DRIVING PROPERLY I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THE COIL REPLACE. IT WORKED FOR ANOTHER THREE WEEKS UNTIL WE HAD ANOTHER DOWN POUR OF RAIN, WHILE DRIVING I HEARD CONTINUOUS BEEPS A MINUTE OR TWO LATER THERE WAS A BURN SMELL IN THE TRUCK IT SEEMS TO COME FROM UNDER THE DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVER SIDE, BEING SCARED I HAD TO PARK THE TRUCK AND HAVE IT TOW. I AM NOW BEING TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THERE IS A WATER LEAK FROM THE WINDSHIELD WHICH HAS CAUSED A SHORT WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND THE COST WOULD BE $1400 TO HAVE IT REPLACE. THIS TRUCK HAVE HAD REGULAR SERVICE EVERY 3000 TO 5000 MILES SINCE WE BOUGHT IT, THIS TRUCK HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVE IN ANY ACCIDENT. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE ORIGINATED FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THERE WERE FOUR-FIVE OTHER VEHICLES DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL # 05V017000, REGARDING THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL;CRUISE CONTROL. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT.
I HAVE HAD MANY OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS AS THOSE LISTED ON THE NET. WIPERS COMING ON AT ANY GIVEN TIME, SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING, LIGHTS ON RADIO NOT WORKING, WIPERS COME ON WHEN I TRY TO LET THE DRIVER WINDOW DOWN. THERE ARE SOME OTHER THINGS AS WELL. HAVE NOT TAKEN TO SHOP YET, BUT WILL SOON. *NM

I PURCHASED A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER SUV NEW FROM A LOCAL DEALER IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 127,300. THIS CONCERNS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM THAT HAS HAPPENED TWICE SINCE WE HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY USED TO COMMUTE TO WORK, NEVER OFF-ROAD OR ABUSED IN ANY MANNER. A FEW MONTHS INTO OUR OWNERSHIP, WE WERE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AND GOING OVER A OVERPASS AT 60 MILES AN HOUR THE SPARE TIRE DROPPED OFF THE SUV AND ROLLED ACROSS FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC AT NIGHT. LUCKILY, IT DID NOT KILL SOMEONE. THEN ABOUT 8 OR 9 MONTHS AGO IT HAPPENED AGAIN JUST BACKING OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY. INSPECTING THE PROBLEM IT IS CLEAR THE STEEL CABLE HOIST HOLDING THE TIRE UP UNDER THE REAR IS BREAKING UNDER STRESS. IT IS CLEAR THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT AND A VERY REAL SAFETY ISSUE. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND I HAVE CALLED THEIR 800 NUMBER. THEY CLAIM THE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I SAY THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT FORD SHOULD NOT ONLY FIX BUT SHOULD REDESIGN THE WHOLE MOUNTING SYSTEM TO BETTER SUPPORT THE TIRE. THE TIRE AND RIM SHOULD HAVE A POSITIVE LOCKING DEVICE THAT SECURELY HOLDS THE TIRE IN PLACE SO THE STEEL CABLE HOIST IS USED ONLY TO RAISE AND LOWER THE TIRE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS AT REST. FORD WILL NOT PUT THIS IN WRITING. I HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE HERE IN CALIFORNIA WITH THE DMV AND OTHER AGENCIES - THEY ARE REFERRING ME TO MEDIATION BOARDS TO SETTLE IT FINANCIALLY. I PURCHASED 4 GOODYEAR WRANGLER RT/S TIRES FROM DISCOUNT TIRE CO. ON 1/17/2005 THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I RETURNED THE TRUCK TO DISCOUNT THEY REBALANCED AND ROTATED THE TIRES AND INFORMED ME IF THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO VIBRATE TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT MUST BE MECHANICAL. I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY ALIGNED, AND ROADFORCE BALANCED THE TIRES. THEY FOUND THAT THEIR WAS A DEFECT IN THE TIRES BECAUSE TOO MUCH WEIGHT WAS NEEDED TO BALANCE THE TIRES. RECENTLY I NOTICED "STEERING" AND "BUMPY" RIDE, SO I TOOK VEHICLE TO GET IT CHECKED OUT. MECHANIC SHOWED HOW ONE TIRE HAD "BOWED OUT" FEATURE AND EXPLAINED THAT THIS WAS A "TREAD SEPARATION" AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. REMEMBERING PRIOR RECALL FOR SAME REASON, WAS CONCERNED THIS WAS A POSSIBLE MANUFACTURER DEFECT. RESEARCHED ON INTERNET AND FOUND # TO CALL AT CONTINENTAL TO REPORT. CALLED AND SPOKE WITH "BILL" WHO RECORDED MY CONCERNS AND CREATED A FILE #22239. TOLD ME A COULD GO TO NATIONAL TIRE AND BATTERY AND HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. WENT TO NTB AND THE TECHNICIAN EXAMINED THE TIRE AND SAID HE COULD NOT PRORATE THE WARRANTY. I EXPLAINED THAT I JUST WANTED TO INFORM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN CASE THERE WERE OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME TYPE OF TIRE. HE SAID THAT WITH THE APPARENT AGE OF THE TIRE IT COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A BUMP THAT HAD CAUSED THE WEAKNESS. ON 05-04-06, WAS DRIVING 35 MPH DOWN A CITY STREET DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS WHEN THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION, THEN MY 2000 EXPEDITION BEGAN TO SOUND AS IF IT WAS SPUTTERING OR MISSING. WIFE SCREAMED, KIDS STARTED CRYING, I SWERVED AS I THOUGHT INITIALLY IT WAS EITHER AN EXPLOSION OR ENGINE BLOWING UP COMING THROUGH THE FLOOR BOARD / FIREWALL. FOUND IT WAS #7 SPARK PLUG BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD, COIL WAS DAMAGED ETC. THE MECHANIC THEN REPAIRED THE ENGINE FOR ME AND I GOT IT BACK AFTER A WEEK. THE REPAIRS INCLUDED THE TOP HALF OF THE ENGINE BEING DISASSEMBLED, THE HEAD TAKEN TO A MACHINE SHOP AND BEING REPAIRED, THEN THE REMAINDER OF THE ENGINE BEING CLEANED UP AND REASSEMBLED. ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE COIL AND COIL MOUNT REPLACED ETC. (NOT A MECHANIC, THERE IS AN ENTIRE LIST IF ITEMS ORDERED FOR REPLACEMENT DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME) AND JUST RECEIVED THE SUV BACK TODAY. I TOOK OUR 2000 FORD EXPEDITION (EDDIE BAUER ED.) INTO JOPLIN FORD LINCOLN MERCURY BECAUSE OF VARIOUS ELECTRICAL ABNORMALITIES. INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: WIPERS STOPPING WHILE DRIVING(1-20-07). I HAD THE DEALERSHIP RUN COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS TO TELL ME WHAT THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEMS WAS. I WAS INFORMED THAT "WDS PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC TESTS FOUND CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX, AND GEM MODULE CAUSING CONCERN, WATER INTRUSION CAUSED BY LEAKING WINDSHIELD." TOTAL ESTIMATE TO REPAIR BETWEEN $885 AND $948 (DEPENDING ON WHETHER WINDSHIELD COULD BE REUSED). I DECLINED TO HAVE REPAIRS MADE (COULDN'T AFFORD IT) BUT PRE-PAID ($503.04 FOR PARTS AND DIAGNOSTICS) SO THAT I COULD DO THE WORK MYSELF. IT WAS DURING AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR "GEM MODULE" THAT I HAPPENED UPON THIS (NHTSA) WEBSITE. I'VE READ ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS (EXPEDITION ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS) AND REALIZED THAT MINE IS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE, BUT QUITE COMMON. I WENT ON TO READ ( EA05015) BY THE ODI AND DOCUMENTS. UNLESS THEY WERE NOT PUBLISHED, THERE ARE SEVERAL FLAWS IN THE REPORT. 1. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WIPERS FAILING IS NOT WIDESPREAD; BUT, THE RESULT OF FAULTY PRODUCTION AT ONE PLANT? THE REPORT I SAW DOESN'T INDICATE THAT ANY DISCERNMENT WAS ATTEMPTED IN THIS REGARD. 2. THE LEAK WAS IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE WINDSHIELD BEHIND THE SUPPORT COLUMN. IT WAS OUT OF SIGHT, CONTRARY TO FORD'S ASCERTION. 3. ODI'S RATIONAL FOR NOT RECOMMENDING A RECALL IS THAT NOT ENOUGH PERCENTAGE COULD BE ESTABLISHED AS A RESULT OF SERVICE RECORDS AND CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS TO NHSTA. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO CONTACT SOME OF THE OWNERS THAT HAD GEM PROBLEMS AND LEAKS; AND ASK THEM IF THEY HAD THEIR WIPERS STOP... BECAUSE, THOUGH I REPORTED THE WIPERS TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, WHAT WAS SHOWN ON THE REPAIR ORDER IS, "...A C/S THE BLOWER FAN RUNS ON HIGH WHEN THE KEY IS SHUT OFF. HEARD CLICKING NOISE FROM THE ABS WHEN THE VEH IS SHUT OFF..." MAYBE JUST A MISTAKE, MAYBE NOT. *JB
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT FROM PARK TO DRIVE PERIODICALLY. UPON INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER NOTICED THE # 5 FUSE WAS BLOWN. AFTER REPLACEMENT OF THE FUSE, THE VEHICLE SHIFTED PROPERLY. HOWEVER, THE FUSE BLEW SHORTLY AFTER BEING REPLACED. THE FUSE WAS REPLACED FIVE TIMES BEFORE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. THE SERVICE DEALER CONFIRMED THE FUSE HAD BLOWN. *JB
WHEN RAINING CAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMES ON BY ITSELF-DASH LIGHTS, HEATER FAN, DOOR ENTRY SOUNDS. CAR IGNITION TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START. I HAVE HAD THE WINDSHIELD TAKEN OUT AND REPLACED MORE THAN ONCE, THE GEM MODULE AND FUSE BOX REPLACED, NUMEROUS TOWING BILLS AND MAJOR INCONVENIENCE. I HAVE SPENT $1500 APPROX. TO SAY NOTHING OF THE VALUE OF MY TIME. THE FORD DEALER WILL NOT CONTINUE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM NOR WILL HE OFFER A REFUND FOR REPAIRS. AS THE OWNER OF ALMOST TWENTY PERSONAL AND BUSINESS VEHICLES, I CAN'T BELIEVE FORD WILL NOT GET THIS ISSUE RESOLVED FOR MYSELF AND THE MANY OTHER EXPEDITION OWNERS WITH SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. I WILL NO LONGER BE A FORD CUSTOMER AND WILL REPLACE THIS AND THE OTHER FORD VEHICLES IN OUR FLEET WITH ANOTHER BRAND UNLESS FORD DOES SOMETHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM QUICKLY. SB. *NM
