THE FRONT WHEEL ON THE PASSENGER WOBBLES IN ALL DIRECTIONS. THE WHEEL IS NOT REMOVEABLE BECAUSE THE LUGS: NUTS JUST SPIN ON THE STUDS. THE DEALER WILL BE NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
WHEN PLACING THE KEY IN THE INGITION AND UPON STARTING VEHICLE, CONSUMER NOTICED SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM THE INGNITION DUE TO VEHICLE CATCHING ON FIRE WITHIN THE IGNITION SWITCH. FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED, AND WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
ACCIDENT OCCURRED IN THE AFTERNOON OF AUGUST 28TH, 1999 IN DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA. THE ACCIDENT INVOLVED MY VEHICLE HITTING A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME (I WAS TRAVELLING AT ABOUT 35-45 MPH AND REACHED AN INTERSECTION WHERE TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED FOR THE LIGHT. I HIT THE BRAKES AND THOUGHT I HAD ENOUGH TIME TO STOP THE VEHICLE, BUT I ENDED UP REAR-ENDING A TRUCK (AT THE POINT OF IMPACT THE CAR WAS PROBABLY TRAVELLING 5-10 MPH)). ANYHOW WHEN I RECEIVED MY CAR FROM THE REPAIR SHOP IT RODE EXTREMELY ROUGHLY. AFTER TAKING IT TO A FIRESTONE DEALER THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY TREAD HAD 'SEPARATED' AND TOLD ME THE ONLY SOLUTION WAS TO BUY NEW TIRES. THIS IS ALL VERY CIRCUMSTANCIAL EVIDENCE (I REALIZE), BUT AFTER READING ABOUT OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS REGARDING THE SAME EQUIPMENT, I FELT COMPELLED TO REPORT THIS ACCIDENT AS WELL IN CASE THE TIRE TOO WERE RESPONSIBLE. THE FAULTY TIRES (2 OF 4) HAVE SINCE BEEN DISCARDED. I WOULD APPRECIATE KNOWING WHETHER THE TIRE SEPARATION COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT AS I KNOW THINK IT MAY HAVE (THE TIRE'S TREAD WAS NOT SEPARATED PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT AND THE OTHER TIRES WHICH HAD BEEN PURCHASED AT THE SAME TIME ARE STILL ROADWORTHY). *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
VEHICLE EXPERIENCED VIBRATION WHEN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE (FIRESTONE RADIAL AXT) SHREDDED. DURING ROTATION EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, THE BODY MOULDING, THE RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL, THE REAR TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY, THE REAR BUMPER AND THE TAILGATE OF THE VEHICLE. *YC
WHILE AWAY ON VACATION, THE TIRE ON MY TRUCK ACTUALLY EXPLODED WHILE IT WAS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AT HOME. THE HOLE IS ABOUT 1/4 AROUND THE CIRCUMFRENCE OF THE TIRE, WITH THE STEEL BELTS FRAYED AT THE ENDS. I SAVED THE TIRE BECAUSE IT LOOKS SO ODD.( DOT NUMBER: )
PE00 020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 55MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE . SHE PULLED OVER AND SAW LEFT REAR TREAD SEPARATED FROM TIRE. TIRE TREAD WAS SLAPPING UP AGAINST VEHICLE. TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED, AND THE TREAD WAS SEPARATED. FIRESTONE #FR480, P215/70 R15 DOT # W200TMX. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.*AK THE TIRES FAILED THREE TIMES DUE TO TREAD SEPARATION, CRACK AND INTERNAL SEPARATIONS. *YH
POSSIBLE ENGINE FAILURE RESULTED IN VEHICLE FIRE, ON TWO OCCASIONS. NLM
DRIVER'S AND THE PASSENGER'S SIDE DOORS DID NOT SHUT ALL THE WAY. OWNER HAD TRUCK CHECKED BY AN AUTO BODY SHOP. MECHANIC STATED THAT TRUCK WAS MOST LIKELY IN A CRASH. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
I WAS DRIVING ON A FREEWAY TRANSITION WHEN THE HOOD FLEW OPEN AND HIT THE WINDSHIELD. THE HOOD DID NOT DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE. THE HOOD, WINDSHIELD, WIPERS AND PLATE BETWEEN THE WINDSHIED AND HOOD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

ON JULY 18, 1999, I WAS TAKING MY DAUGHTER (15 AT THE TIME) TO SUMMER CAMP FROM HENDERSON, NC TO BROWN SUMMIT, NC. SHE WAS DRIVING UNDER HER PERMIT, AND I WAS DOZING. I WAS SUDDENLY AWAKENED BY A SOUND LIKE A MACHINE GUN, AND THE NEXT THING I KNEW, WE WERE SPINNING IN CIRCLES ACROSS THREE LANES OF I-40/85. WE ENDED UP SPINNING OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT FORTUNATELY DID NOT TURN OVER. I FOUND THAT MY RIGHT REAR TIRE (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT) HAD LOST ITS TREAD, AND THAT WAS THE NOISE I HAD HEARD. A PASSING MOTORIST STOPPED TO SEE IF WE WERE OK, AND HE SAID THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW WE AVOIDED BEING CREAMED BY AN ONCOMING SEMI-TRAILER. THE NEXT DAY (MONDAY), I WENT TO A TIRE DEALER IN HENDERSON, AND FORKED OUT $400 FOR A SET OF MICHELIN M/S TIRES. THE DEALER COMMENTED ABOUT THE FIRESTONES, "OH, YEAH, SOMETIMES TREAD DOES COME OFF LIKE THAT." WE WERE LUCKY, AND ALL WE SUFFERED WERE PSYCHOLOGICAL INJURIES, AND DAMAGED WHEEL WELL. I RECENTLY TRADED IN THE VEHICLE AND PURCHASED A NEW ISUZU RODEO.( DOT NUMBER: )

WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH LOST ALL POWER. VEHICLE DIDN'T HAVE ANY LIGHTS. VEHICLE STALLED AND THEN SHUT DOWN WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. THEN THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT THE FIRE OUT. *AK
SINCE THE A/C CAN NOT RUN W/O THE HARNESS SPARKING, IT HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED. DEALER CAN NOT FIND PROBLEM. NO BRAKE LINE INTERFERENCE FOUND. *AK
WHILE HARD BRAKING JUMPED A CURB TO AVOID A CAR, REAR PASSENGER HIT FRONT SEAT. THE SEAT BELT BROKE FREE FROM THE BUCKLE. THE BUCKLE WAS MESSED UP WITH RED PLASTIC PARTS ALL OVER THE REAR SEATS. THE PASSENGER WAS AN ADULT ~ 150LBS. WE ALL WERE SEAT BLETS FOR SAFETY BUT THE BUCKLE IN THE EXPLORER BURSTED APART-- THIS IS NOT A SAFE SITUATION. IF THERE HAD BEEN A COLISION THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGER COULD HAS SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURY. THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE SYSTEM NEED LOOKING INTO. I STILL HAVE THE PLASTIC PARTS IF ONE WANT TO SEE THEM. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 15MPH ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ABS BRAKE LIGHT AND ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND OFF, AND THEN STAYED ON. *AK
THE EXTERIOR PAINT HAS NOT WORN OFF IN A NORMAL FASHION. IT HAS FALLEN OFF IN LARGE (AVERAGE 3-INCH DIAMETER) CHUNKS, LEAVING BEHIND UNSIGHTLY SPOTS OF EXPOSED (AND THEREFORE RUSTED) METAL FRAME. THIS EXTREME AND STRANGE WEATHERING PROCESS WAS NOT CAUSED BY SOME EXTREME CLIMATIC CONDITIONS BUT MAY HAVE HAPPENED BECAUSE OF A POOR PAINT JOB OR LOW QUALITY PAINT. NOSAFETY DEFECT MENTIONED IN SUMMARY. *AK
THERE ARE HUGE CORROSION HOLES UNDER BOTH REAR DOORS. I NOTICED THE SAME CORROSION PROBLEM ON ALL 1991-1993 FORD EXPLORERS DRIVEN AROUND.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY SUN ROOF BLEW OFF, AND ALMOST HIT ANOTHER AUTOMOBILE. NO ACCIDENT, BUT CONSUMER WAS SCARED. NO INJURIES OCCURRED. *AK
VEHICLE FIRE DUE TO FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING HOSE WHICH LEAKED. MJS
ENGINE REEVED PAST 6000 RPMS AND COULD NOT GET IT TO RELEASE UNTL VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. *MJS
I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE MISSING WHEN GOING UP HILLS AND ALSO ROUGH IDLE AT START UP. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO NAPA, A AAA APPROVED SHOP, WITH ASE MECHANICS. THERE WAS A LEAKING HEAD GASKET WHICH ALLOWED ANTIFREEZE TO GET IN THE NUMBER 3 CYCLINDER AND PLUG. WHEN THEY TOOK THE HEAD OFF TO MAKE SURE IT WASN'T CRACKED THEY FOUND THE ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLIES AND PUSH RODS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE PUSH ROD ENDS WERE WORN TO THE SHAPE OF FOOTBALLS AND HAD WORN INDENTATIONS IN THE ASSEMBLIES. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER USED OIL. I CHANGE THE OIL/FILTER EVERY 3 MONTHS. IT HAS NEVER BEEN LOW ON OIL OR OVERHEATED. THE SHOP OWNER AND THE MECHANIC BOTH SAID THEY THINK IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND I SHOULD REPORT IT. PARTS HAD TO BE ORDERED FROM CHICAGO BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY IN WA OR OR. THE REASON THEY WERE GIVEN WAS THAT THESE PARTS COULDN'T BE KEPT IN STOCK BECAUSE OF THE HIGH DEMAND FOR THEM. I BABY MY VEHICLES AND REQUIRED SERVICE WORK IS DONE ON TIME. I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ONE OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS COST ME $1,493.41 TO REPAIR SOMETHING WHICH I DON'T THINK SHOULD HAVE GONE WRONG. IN THIS CASE AN ACCIDENT DID NOT HAPPEN BUT COULD HAVE IF THE RODS HAD GONE THROUGH THE HEAD WHILE I WAS DRIVING.
THE BRAKES LOCKED UP WHEN SLOWLY BEING APPLIED. HAD TO TURN WHEEL TO AVOID BEING HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE DUE TO LOCKED BRAKES. HIT A FLAT WALL & WAS FLIPPED OVER AFTER GOING UP A WALL, INSTEAD. *AK
SPEED CONTROL SURGES DURING WET ROAD CONDITIONS.
THERE IS A VIBRATION THAT OCCURS AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 65MPH AND 70MPH. VIBRATION WAS PRESENT WITH OLD TIRES AND DID NOT GO AWAY WITH A NEW SET ON RIMS AND TIRES. ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY FAN CLUTCH FROZE, CAUSING THE FAN ITSELF TO DEVELOP STRESS CRACKS. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH UNITS. *AK
VEHICLE WAS IN PARK AND ENGINE STARTED TO RACE REAL HIGH, CONSUMER HAD TO CUT OFF THE VEHICLE. *AK
UPON STARTING VEHICLE AND DRIVING APPROXIMANTLY ONE MILE I TURNED ON THE HEATER AND STARTED SMELLING A BURNING SMELL AND CAB FILLED WITH SMOKE. I STOPPED THE VEHICAL AND TURNED IT OFF. SMOKE WAS SO THICK I HAD TO EXIT THE VEHICAL. UPON INVESTIGATION UNDER THE HOOD I COULD FIND NO SOURCE OF FIRE OR DAMAGE TO THE TRUCK.I USED THE HEATER THE FOLLOWING DAY AND HAVE HAD NO FURTHER PROBLEM. THIS SEEMS TO MATCH UP WITH THE FEB,23 1999 NEWSPAPER ARTICAL I READ. I AM INTRESTED TO KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THIS.
DESIGN FLAW OF THE VENTILLATION SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR LEAVES TO ENTER THE PLENUM CHAMBER CAUSING BURNING AND POTENTIAL FIRE, DAMAGE TO THE BLOWER MOTOR DUE TO BURNING,
I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO BE SERVICES FOR THE BRAKES THREE TIMES AND EACH TIME THE DEALER (VISTA FORD) TELLS ME THAT IT'S SOMETHING ELSE. DURING THE LAST THREE YEARS SINCE I OWNED THE CAR, MY TOTAL REPAIR BILLS (NOT INCLUDING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE) IS APPROXIMATELY $4,581.52. I HAVE REPLACED A/C, BREAKCLNR, STARTER, BRAKE DRUMS ETC. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING AFTER THE CONSUMER WAS PRESSING DOWN ON THE BRAKES VERY HARD BECAUSE THE ABS BRAKES LOCKED UP. THE CONSUMER NOTICED LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE TIRES, AND THE CONSUMER PARKED THE VEHICLE AND GOT OUT, THE VEHICLE WAS ROLLING DOWN THE STREET. CONSUMER HAD TO JUMP INTO THE VEHICLE AND PULL UP THE EMERENCY PARKING BRAKE,AND THE THE REAR BRAKES LOCKED UP. THEY ARE'NT SUPPOSE TO LOCK UP. *AK
APPARENTLY THE MAZDA STD 5 SPD SOLD IN THESE TRUCKS IS DESTINED TO FAIL. IT HAS SO I'M TOLD (RECENTLY SAW WHEN I WAS FORCED TO GET REBUILT DO TO DEALER REFUSING TO ACT ON MY COMPLAINT)THREE RUBBER PLUGS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO FAIL. WHY THEY ARE THERE IS BEYOND ME. AFTER A TIME THEY START TO SEEP AND CAUSE TRANSMISSION FLIUD TO SLOWLY LEAK OUT ONLY WHEN VEHICLE IS RUNNING IE IN GEAR. AS THE FLUID DRIPS OUT MOVING DOWN ROAD YOU DON'T NOTICE IT. ONCE IT GETS LOW ENOUGH IT CAUSES TRANNY TO OVERHEAT. I BROUGHT VEHICLE IN THE FIRST TIME THIS TELL TALE SIGN OF NO CLUTCH OCCURRED. TRANSMISSION SHOP TOLD ME THAT DEALER SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TEST DROVE VEHICLE WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. OF COURSE WHEN I GOT THERE IT WAS WORKING PROPERLY BECAUSE IT HAD COOLED DOWN, BOTH OUTSIDE TEMP & VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS PARKED WHILE IN LAWYERS OFFICE. I POINTED OUT IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS LEAKING SOMETHING & THEY SHRUGGED IT OFF AS PROBALY AN OIL LEAK. SINCE THEY WOULDN'T EVEN MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR ME TO BRING IN @ A LATER DATE I TOOK IT TO MEAN, SINCE THEY'RE THE EXPERTS THAT I DIDN'T HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. WELL APPARENTLY I DID BECAUSE AFTER ABOUT A MONTH THE INPUT SHAFT WAS SEVERED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY DRIVING BESIDE A 18 WHEELER. LUCKILY NOTHING HAPPENED TO VEHICLE BUT WOODY ANDERSON PUT MY LIFE IN DANGER UNNECESSARILY BY IGNORING MY PROBLEM. I FOUND OUT LATER THE SERVICE MGR WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM W/ THESE TRANSMISSIONS BUT NEGLECTED TO TRAIN HIS STAFF ON IT. THEIR GENERAL MGR KI. HARRIS SAID TO ME ON 12/15 THAT HE WAS IN BUSINESS TO SERVICE VEHICLES & HE WOULD DO WHAT WOULD MAKE ME HAPPY. WELL NOW IT'S ME AGAINST THE BIG DEALERSHIP, FOR HE HAS GONE ACK ON HIS WORD. I NEED ADDITIONAL DATA TO SUPPORT MY POSITION FROM YOUR DATA BANKS TO SHOW THIS IS ONE A POOR DESIGH & TWO A KNOWN PROBLEM WAS NOT CONVEYED TO CUSTOMER WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY IF I LOST POWER PASSING ON A ONE LANE ROAD OR SIMILAR SITUATION WHERE I COULD NOT AVOID AN ACCIDENT .

WHILE DRIVING THE SUNROOF WENT FLYING OFF THE CAR, NO INDICATION THE ROOF WAS COMING OFF. IT WAS NOT IN USE. AFTER SUNROOF WAS OFF, LOOKING AT THE ROOF, IT HAD BEEN CLOSED, THE HINGES WERE BROKEN IN HALF. DEALER STATES THE HINGES FAILED AND BROKE, AND THE ROOF CAME OFF FROM THE FRONT, INSTEAD OF THE REAR. *AK

THE TIRE WAS REPLACED BY TUCKER TIRE COMPANY WITH A SIMILAR TIRE, AT OWNER'S EXPENSE.*AK TIRE PEELED AND DISINTEGRATED. THE CUSTOMER HAD PATCHES FOR FLATS 9 TIMES. *YH

FUEL TANK-VAPOR VENT VALVE CARRIER WELD FAILED. DEALER FAILED TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. INDEPENDENT REPAIR FACILITY FOUND FUEL LEAK, REPLACED FUEL TANK AT MY EXPENSE. I RECENTLY LEARNED OF RECALL NO. 91V025000. FORD STATES THAT THIS IS ADVISORY BULLETIN ONLY AND NOT A RECALL, AND IN ANY CASE, DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. I ORDERED MY VEHICLE IN MAY 1990 AND TOOK DELIVERY IN SEPTEMBER 1990. HEATER MOTOR FAN WAS BLOWING SMOKE INTO VEHICLE WHICH WAS CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL SHORT IN MOTOR. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND THEY INFOMED VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER A RECALL.
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND CALIPERS FAILED. ALSO, REPLACED RADIUS ARM AND BUSHINGS.
I WAS CRUISING THE INTERSTATE AT APPROX. 60/65 MPH WHEN THE REAR DRIVERS-SIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE WHEEL CASING. THE LOOSE TREAD DID SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL-WELL. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235/R15 )
ENGINE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT. BY THE TIME I PULLED OVER STEAM AND SMOKE WAS POURING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. WITHIN 2 MINUTES IT CAUGHT FIRE. WE WERE UNABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE TRUCK WAS A TOTAL LOSS. FORD WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE US WITH ANY INFORMATION ABOUT A REASON.

PE00 020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 70MH ON HIGHWAY AND BACK REAR DRIVER'S TIRE TREAD SEPARATED, AND LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. TRUCK WAS CARRYING A CAMPER. VEHICLE FISHTAILED, AND VEHICLE WAS ON TWO TIRES. VEHICLE WENT INTO AN ENBANKMENT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. TIRE FIRESTONE, #ATX. *AK
