THE ACCIDENT OCCURED OUTSIDE OF AUSTIN TEXAS AND RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF MY BROTHER JOHN CHRISTOPHER HOUSTON AND HIS FIANCE, DANA WILLENBERG. 3 OTHER PASSENGERS WERE INJURED. A POLICE REPORT IS ON FILE WITH THE GEORGETOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE 3 OTHER PASSENGERS, WHO RESIDE IN AUSTIN, ARE WILLING TO PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
ON THE FIRST INCIDENT ONE OF THE TIRES WAS IN PRETTY BAD SHAPE AND READY TO EXPLODE, IT CAUSED MY CAR TO BE MISALIGNED. DURING THE ALIGNMENT THEY DISCOVERED THE DEFECT AND REPLACE THE TIRE FOR THE SAME TYPE. ON THE SECOND INCIDENT THE TIRE PEELED-OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65MPH. I WAS LUCKY TO BEING ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND PULL TO THE SIDE, BUT IT WAS VERY SCARY AND I ALMOST CRASHED. AT THAT TIME I WAS DRIVING WITH MY WIFE (PREGNANT 6 MONTHS) AND MY 3 YEAR OLD SON. THE TIRE PROBLEM CAUSED A LOT OF DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND PART OF IT WAS COVERED BY THE INSURANCE. PE00-020, FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE TREAD SEPARATION; WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 70-75 MPH TREAD ON THE REAR TIRE ON DRIVER'S SIDE CAME OFF, WHICH CAUSED A CRASH. EXPLORER WAS TOTALLED IN THE CRASH. A 1996 FORD SUV BLEW A TIRE ON THE NJ TURNPIKE, HIT MY WIFE'S CAR AND CAUSED BOTH VEHICLES TO VEER OFF THE ROADWAY INTO THE WOODS. MY WIFE'S CAR LANDED ON ITS SIDE AND WAS TOTALLED AS WELL AS THE EXPLORER.FORTUNATELY, THE INJURIES WERE VERY MINOR. THE TROOPER WHO INVESTIGATED FOUND THAT THE TIRES ON THE EXPLORER WERE ATX FIRESTONES. WE WISH TO ADD OUR NAMES TO THE LIST OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED OR PUT IN SERIOUS DANGER FROM THESE TIRES. TIRE SEPARATED GOING ABOUT 20 MPH ON A GRADED BUT UNPAVED ROAD. TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 102 DEGREES. THE SEPARATION LOOKED IDENTICAL TO MEDIA PICTURES OF OTHER TIRE SEPARATION PROBLEMS. TIRE HAD APPROXIMATELY 20,000 ON IT. PLENTY OF TREAD WAS LEFT. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235 75R15 )

JUST WANTED TO ADD OUR NAME TO YOUR LIST OF INCIDENTS REPORTED ABOUT TREAD SEPARTION ON THESE FIRESTONE TIRES. I NOTICED IN SPRING OF 2000 THAT MY EXPLORER WOULD SHAKE WHILE DRIVING. MY HUSBAND TOOK IT IN TO HAVE THE TIRES BALANCED. MECHANIC, AS WELL AS MY HUSBAND WERE SURPRISED TO SEE THAT A HUNK (APROX. 5"/5") WAS GONE FROM THE TIRE! INSTEAD OF A NORMAL BALANCING, WE HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRE. I'M NOT SURE IF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE RECENT FIRESTONE PROBLEMS, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THAT PART OF THE TIRE JUST CAME OFF. THE REST OF THE TIRE IS STILL IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. I PRIDE MYSELF ON BEING A GOOD DRIVER, ESPECIALLY WITH A 1 YR OLD, SO I DON'T THINK I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR EXCESSIVELY HARD. WE STILL HAVE THE TIRE, IF THAT HELPS, OR IF YOU NEED TO SEE IT. WHILE DRIVING SOUTH FROM ATLANTA ON I75 AT 70MPH THE RIGHT REAR TIRE EXPLODED WITH A ROAR.MY WIFE, WHO WAS DRIVING, MANAGED TO EASE THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. THE TIRE WAS TOTALLY DISINTEGRATED. WE CALLED AAA WHO REMOVED THE WHEEL AND INSTALLED THE SPARE. ON JUNE 28 WE TOOK THE CAR TO FIRESTONE TIRE CO AT 2211 APPALACHE PKWY, TALLAHASSEE, FL , 32301 TEL 850-877-0184. WE SWERVED FOR A BIT AND RESUMED CONTROL OF THE CAR. WE PULLED OVER AND OBSERVED THE TIRE'S TREAD WAS COMPLETELY OFF. THE TREAD WAS LOST ON THE ROAD AND THE TIRE WAS REPLACED AND DISCARDED. TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH AND HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE. PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE. THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAD PEELED COMPLETELY OFF. REPLACED THE TIRE WITH SPARE. WENT TO FIRESTONE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT ALL FOUR TIRES MIGHT SHOULD BE REPLACED SINCE ONE WAS BAD. I REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES WITH THE ATX. SUBMITTED CLAIM TO FIRESTONE FOR DAMAGE TO CAR AND TIRE NOT KNOWING AT THE TIME, THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I THOUGHT IT WAS SHORT OF A MIRACLE THAT FIRESTONE ACTUALLY PAID FOR THE TIRE AND DAMAGE. NOW, I KNOW WHY. MY HUSBAND HAS THE WILDERNESS AT TIRES AND WE ARE PROCEEDING TO GET HIS TIRES CHECKED OUT. THERE IS A WAITING LIST IN SC (BEING THAT WE ARE THE LAST STATE FOR THE RECALL) FOR TIRES TO BE REPLACED. I WENT OUT TO THE TRUCK AND THE LEFT FRONT TIRE HAD A RUBBER FLAP... I DROVE IT HOME CAREFULLY AND PUT THE SPARE ON IT. ABOUT 5 DAYS LATER, ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK, I HEARD FLAPPING AGAIN.. THIS TIME, IT WAS THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. SINCE I WAS SELLING THE TRUCK, I STOPPED AT GATEWAY TIRE ON BERT KOUNS, SHREVEPORT, LA TO HAVE "ONE-OFFS" PUT ALL THE WAY AROUND. WHEN STARTING VEHICLE IT MAKES A CLANKING NOISE UNDERNEATH ON RIGHT SIDE OF WHEEL. WHEN CONSUMER APPLIES BRAKES, PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. ALSO, PEDAL IS VERY SOFT. *AK
ON A VERY WARM DAY IN MAY, I HAD A TIRE BLOW OUT. I THOUGHT IT WAS A UNIQUE PROBLEM, HOWEVER WITH ALL THE FIRESTONE INVESTIGATION AND REPORTS ABOUT DEFECTIVE TIRES, I BELIEVE THAT MY TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE. AFTER CONTACTING BOTH FORD AND FIRESTONE DEALERS WITH MY CONCERN, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH THE NHTSA HAS ISSUED WARNINGS AGAINST MY TIRES,THEY ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO REPLACE MY TIRES. ACCORDING TO PRESS STATEMENTS MADE BY JASON VINES FROM FORD AND CHRISTINE KARBOWIAK FROM FIRESTONE, IF A CUSTOMER HAS A CONCERN ABOUT THEIR TIRES, THEY WILL BE REPLACED AT NO COST. OBVIOUSLY, THE FORD AND FIRESTONE DEALERS ARE NOT HONORING THESE COMMENTS AND HAVE BEEN INFORMED NOT TO REPLACE THE TIRES UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN RECALLED. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED WITH MY TIRES AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP AND SUGGESTIONS YOU HAVE REGARDING MY CONCERN. POSSIBLE FAULTY TIRE-TREAD PEELED OFF, DID NOT EXPLODE OR DEFLATE. FIRESTONE ATX P235/75R15. SPOKE TO CR LEO HE INDICATED THAT THEY ALLOWED THE INSUREDS ATTORNEY TO STORE THE TIRE THAT CAUSED THE ACCIDENT KILLING THE INSURED WIFE AND INJURING THE INSURED. INSURED WAS IN A COMA. HE HAS COME OUT OF THE COMA, BUT HE CANNOT BE SPOKEN TO AT THIS TIME. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT HE WILL REMEMBER THE ACCIDENT. POLICE REPORT IS NOT AVAILABLE. WE HAVE AN AGREEMENT WITH INSURED ATTORNEY ABOUT HAVING ACCESS TO TIRE FOR OUR SUB CLAIM. WE ONLY ARE PURSUING SUB FOR PROPERTY. ATTORNEY HAS FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST FIRESTONE FOR TE INJURIES. AFTER VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN AND WAS PARKED IT CAUGHT ON FIRE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. CONSUMER BELIEVED FIRE HAD STARTED IN THE ENGINE. *AK
FOLLOW A LONG WEEKEND TRIP, I NOTICED A LARGE SECTION OF THE OUTSIDE TREAD WAS MISSING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE REVEALING THE STEEL BELT. IT IS WAS THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRE, THE FIRESTONE ATX, THAT CAME WITH THE EXPLORER WHICH WE PURCHASE NEW IN '96. THE MISSING PIECE WAS AT LEAST FIVE INCHES IN LENGTH AND TWO INCHES WIDE. I IMMEDIATELY REPLACED THE DAMAGED TIRE WITH THE MATCHING SPARE. IN EARLY JUNE I REPLACE THE ENTIRE SET OF FIRESTONE TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND. AT THAT TIME I WAS TOLD BY A DISCOUNT TIRE EMPLOYEE THE DAMAGE WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY HITTING A LARGE POTHOLE (WHICH I DIDN'T BELIEVE.) PLEASE ADD OUR COMPLAINT TO YOUR FILE SURROUNDING THE FIRESTONE TIRES. WE HAVE A TWO-YEAR OLD SON WHO WE DROVE AROUND EXCLUSIVELY IN THE EXPLORER. THANK GOD NOTHING HAPPEN, BUT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE DELAY FORD AND FIRESTONE DISPLAYED WITH THIS RECALL.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235 )

PE00020; TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, TREAD ON DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE CAME OFF, CAUSING EXPLORER TO ROLLOVER. DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE BOTH INJURED. TIRE WAS A FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT, ORIGINALTIRE EQUIPMENT. EXPLORER WAS TOTALLED. OWNER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO REACH FIRESTONE. PLEASE LIST TIRE SIZE AND DOT #. *AK
