PE00 020 ; CONSUMER WAS HAVING OIL CHANGED AT GOODYEAR AND NOTICED THAT RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD TREAD SEPARATION. FIRESTONE, WILDERNESS#AT, P23575R15, #DOT VNHL. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. HE REPLACED TIRE WITH MICHELEN.*AK AFTER THE TIRES WERE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE, THE LOUD AND HUMMING NOISE STOPED. CUSTOMER STATES THE TIRES SHOULD BE ON RECALL. *YH
CONSUMER WAITING FOR REIMBURSMENT UNDER RECALL (OOT-005), ALL FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES P23575R15 REPLACED. CJ
ON OCTOBER 4TH, 2000 I HAD MY FORD EXPLORER TIRES CHECKED FOR THE FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL. I WAS TOLD BY THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND GIVEN A SERVICE REPORT, THAT ALL 5 OF MY TIRES PASSED INSPECTION AND WERE NOT ON THE FIRESTONE RECALL. THEN ON OCTOBER 11TH, 2000 MY WIFE WAS DRIVING 35 MILES AN HOUR IN THE CITY WHEN A TIRE BLEW OUT! UPON MY INSPECTION I FOUND OUT THAT ALL OF MY TIRES HAVE CRACKS ON THE SIDE WALLS WHERE THE TREAD IS ATTACHED. THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT HAS THE SIDE WALL RUBBER MISSING IN THIS AREA AROUND THE WHOLE TIRE. THE CORDS ARE SHOWING AROUND THE SIDE WALL! IF A QUALIFIED FORD SERVICE CENTER CAN'T IDENTIFY A TIRE PROBLEM WHEN THEY SEE IT, THEN A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL GET KILLED UNTIL THE TIRE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. MY TIRES SHOULD BE ON RECALL! ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE A HAIRLINE CRACK THAT GOES 360 DEGREES AROUND THE TIRE ON BOTH THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE. THIS CRACK APPEARS TO BE WHERE THE CAP ATTACHES TO THE TIRE. I YOU LOOK AT THE SIDEWALL YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE CAP IS ATTACHED. (DOT NUMBER: VN TIRESIZE: P235/75R15)
THE REAR FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT P 235/75R15 TIRE TREAD DISINTEGRATED, TIRE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *MJS
EVEN THOUGH CHECKED AND FOUND NOT TO BE A RECALLED TIRE, WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH UP A FREEWAY WE EXPERIENCED TIRE TREAD SEPARATION BUT NO BLOW OUT. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE SLOWLY TO FIRESTONE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED THE BAD TIRE. WANTED TO REPORT TIRE SEPARATION FROM WILDERNESS AT FIRESTONE TIRE THAT WAS CLAIMED TO BE GOOD AND NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. I AM NOW STUCK WITH THREE MORE TIRES OF THE SAME NATURE THAT I FEEL MUST BE REPLACED BEFORE ANOTHER TREAD SEPARATION AND EXTENSIVE ACCIDENT. I HEARD A NOISE WHILE LEAVING PARKING LOT. IMMEDIATELY THERE WAS A RATTLING SOUND IN THE MOTOR, THEN THE TRUCK STALLED.. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF A TIMING CHAIN FAILURE THAT JUMPED LOOSE AND KNOCKED A HOLE IN THE LEFT VALVE COVER. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OR OCCURENCE BEFORE THIS HAPPENED.

EACH OF THESE TIRES EXHIBITS A CONTINUOUS FISSURE AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE TIRE WHERE THE TREAD MEETS THE SIDEWALL. I REPLACED THESE TIRES IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE RETAINED THEM HERE AT MY HOME SO THAT I MAY BRING THEM TO THE NHTSA FACILITY HERE RETAINED THEM HERE AT MY HOME SO THAT I MAY BRING THEM TO THE NHTSA FACILITY HERE IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA. TIRE SHREADED WHILE DRIVING ALONG I-81 JUST OUSTSIDE HARRISONBURG, VA. CAR CONTROLLED. SHREADING OF TIRE CAUSED PLASTIC TRIM TO BE DAMAGED. MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED ACCELERATING WHEN I WAS PROCEEDING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. I COULD SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN SOMEWHAT BY AGGRESSIVELY APPLYING THE BRAKES. HOWEVER, THIS WOULD JUST GET ME SLOWED DOWN A LITTLE UNTIL I WOULD RELEASE THE BRAKE. THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY SPEED UP AGAIN. I WAS TRAVELING ON A FAIRLY BUSY STRETCH OF INTERSTATE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I LUCKILY DID NOT HAVE A NEED TO STOP QUICKLY WHILE THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED. I TRIED HITTING THE ACCELERATOR A FEW TIMES TO GET IT TO STOP STICKING IN THE "WIDE OPEN" POSITION. I EVEN TRIED MANIPULATING THE CRUISE CONTROL (WHICH WAS OFF). AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM, I STARTED TRYING TO THINK OF A QUICK GAME PLAN TO GET OUT OF THIS POTENTIAL DISASTER. I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT MY WIFE WAS NOT DRIVING AT THE TIME AND THAT I DID NOT HAVE OTHERS IN THE CAR DURING THIS NIGHTMARE. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO FIND A SHOULDER WHERE I COULD PULL OFF THE ROAD. AS I SAID, THE ROAD WAS EXTREMELY BUSY AND I WAS VERY WORRIED ABOUT GETTING OFF THE ROAD SAFELY WITH A SEMI-TRUCK NOT FAR BEHIND ME. I PULLED TOWARD THE SHOULDER AND PUT THE CAR INTO "NEUTRAL". THE RPM'S, WHICH HAD BEEN RUNNING EXTREMELY HIGH FOR ABOUT 3 MINUTES, MOVED EVEN HIGHER AT THIS POINT. THE RPM'S WERE PEGGED TO THE TOP OF THE GAUGE FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS. AS SOON AS I FELT I WAS OFF OF THE ROADWAY ENOUGH, I TURNED THE KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR THERE WAS A HORRIBLE BURNING ODOR COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR. I AM NOT ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROBLEM THAT MAY HAVE TRIGGERED THIS INCIDENT, BUT I AM ALSO VERY WORRIED ABOUT COLLATERAL DAMAGE THAT THIS UNDOUBTEDLY CAUSED. I FEEL THAT THIS CAUSED AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF WEAR AND TEAR TO THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM. ON TOP OF ALL OF THE PHYSICAL DAMAGE DONE TO THE CAR, THE EXPERIENCE WAS SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST. MY WIFE REFUSES TO EVEN GET IN THE CAR AT THIS POINT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, SHE DOESN'T WANT MY KIDS TO RIDE IN IT EITHER.
ENGINE CRANKSHAFT BROKE. WHILE SITTING IN VEHICLE HEARD A FUNNY NOISE. THEN, VEHICLE DIED, AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. CONSUMER FELT THIS WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE CRANKSHAFT FELL OFF.
HAD JUST LEFT JOB SITE AND NOTICED TIRE WAS GETTING LOW. PULLED INTO A TIRE RETAILER & TIRE WAS CHECKED. WAS INFORMED THAT RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS BAD. WAS SEPARATING WHERE TREAD MET SIDWALL. STEEL BELT WAS SHOWING. STILL HAS TIRE. GOODYEAR, WRANGLER RT/S, 0235/75R15 WITH 60,000 MILES. *AK
ALL 4 FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES P235/75R15 ARE EXPERIENCING CRACKING ALONG THE TREAD, A FIRESTONE DEALER STATED TIRES WERE SAFE AS THE CRACKS WERE ONLY OZONE CRACKS. *SLC
ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE CRACKS AT THE POINT WHERE THE TREAD AND SIDEWALL MEET.THE TIRES WERE INSPECTED BY A FIRESTONE REPRESENTATIVE AT A FIRESTONE SERVICE CENTER. THE INSPECTOR INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE TIRES AND THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THEM ON A PRO-RATED BASIS.I WOULD HAVE TO PAY 36% OF THE COST OF NEW TIRES SINCE THERE WAS STILL 64% OF USABLE TREAD REMAINING ON THE TIRES.HE INSPECTOR FURTHER SUGGESTED THAT THE TIRES SHOULD BE REPLACED SINCE AND THAT DRIVING WITH TIRES IN THIS CONDITION COULD BE DANGEROUS. WE ARE REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FROM NHTSA DUE TO THE FACT THAT TODAY UPON RETURNING HOME FROM WORK, WE EXAMINED THE TIRES ON OUR VEHICLE AS WE DO OFTEN DUE TO THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIRESTONE TIRES ON EXPLORERS, AND FOUND THAT ALL FOUR TIRES ARE BEGINNING TO " SEPERATE IN EXACTLY THE SAME LOCATION " AS ALL THE OTHER TIRES THAT HAVE BEEN RECALLED, THE REAR BEING WORSE THAN THE FRONT BUT ALL HAVE THE SAME SEPERATION. YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE STEEL INSIDE OF THE TIRES IN SOME PLACES, RIGHT WHERE THE TREAD STARTS. WE HAVE BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH FIRESTONE LOCALLY AND THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE JUST THIS PAST APRIL 2000, AND NO-ONE WANTS TO HELP. THE ONLY HELP WE HAVE BEEN OFFERED IS TO "PRORATE" OUR TIRES, NOT " REPLACE" THEM. FORTUNATELY WE CAUGHT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AN ACCIDENT, BUT NOW WITH THIS BEING THE ONLY VEHICLE WE HAVE TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK AND NO-ONE WANTING TO REPLACE THEM, WHAT ARE WE TO DO ? THIS PROBLEM STARTED THIS YEAR WHEN RAINING. TODAY 9/16/00 IN TAMPA FL. THERE IS A HURRICAN APPROCHING I WAS GETTING SUPPLIES. THE POWER STEERING LOCKED UP 2X AS TRING TO RETURN HOME IN HEAVY RAIN. I CALLED & TOOK THIS VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TO AUTOWAY FORD IN ST. PETERSBURG WHO PREVESIOUSLY NOTED THIS PROBLEM AT LAST RAIN.[SAID MANUFACTURE DEFECT] BUT DID NOTHING OR CHARGE AT THAT TIME. NOW WITH A MAJOR HURRICANE APPROCHING!! THEY DOCUMENTED THE PROBLEM & WANTED TO KEEP THE CAR TIL MONDAY! I SAID NO! STORM TO HIT THIS AREA SUN/MON.MORN, & I WOULD BE STRANDED> TOOK CAR BACK HOME WHICH IS ON THE GULF. I AM VERY FRIGHTENED & WILL CALL THE LOCAL NEWS ON THIS MATTER.
