THE 2 FRONT TIRES ON MY FORD EXPLORER HAD STEEL CORD SHOWING THROUGH THEM AT 38,00 MILES I TOOK THE CAR TO BIG O TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED THE INFORMED ME THAT THE TIRES DID NOT MATCH THE DOT CODE THAT FIRESTONE IS RECALLING BUT THE NEW TIRES COULD NOT BE PUT ON THE CAR WITHOUT HAVING THE WHEEL BARRINGS REPACKED. I DON'T KNOW IF FORD HAS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBY ON THE EXPLORERS OR IF THE FIRESTONE TIRES ARE TO BLAME BUT I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION YOU CAN GIVE ME. THE FIRESTONE TIRE BLEWOUT CAUSING THE CONSUMER TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASH INTO A TREE, THE DRIVER SUSTAINED WHIPLASH, BACK, NECK, UPPER AND LOWER EXTREMITY BRUISES AND MUSCLE SPASMS (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT P235/75R15 1055 M/S DOT W2HLIPY407). NLM
I WAS DRIVING NORTH ON I-75 APPROX. 8 MILES NORTH OF GAINESVILLE,FL ON 7/31 & EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE TIRE FAILURE AT 70 MPH. THE SENSATION WAS OF HAVING HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD, BUT I SAW NOTHING IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR (EXCEPT LOTS OF BIG TRUCKS BEARING DOWN ON ME). ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, I BEGAN TO LOSE STEERING ABILITY. I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL AND STOP THE VEHICLE WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY. THE CAR SWUNG OUT AS FAR AS ONE-QUARTER TURN TO THE LEFT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC BUT I WAS ABLE TO COUNTERSTEER AND GET OFF THE ROAD. THE AAA WRECKER ATTENDANT TOLD ME THAT HE HAD SEEN "LOTS" OF THESE BLOWOUTS AND THAT THE TREAD USUALLY RIPPED ALL THE WAY OFF AND TORE UP THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE CAR. LUCKILY, I HAD ABOUT 4 INCHES OF MATERIAL HOLDING THE TIRE TOGETHER WHEN I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO STOP. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON AN EXTREMELY HOT DAY AT ABOUT 3:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DOT# ON THIS TIRE IS NOT VD, BUT VN. THE CDS IN THE SINGLE CD PLAYER HEAT UP TO WHERE IT IS HOT TO TOUCH. THIS COULD BE A FIRE HAZARD. THE OUTSIDE OF THE CD/RADIO UNIT IS ALSO HOT. I WAS TOLD BY FORD THAT THIS WAS COMMON. THE ADVISOR AT FORD SAID HE HAS A 2000 FORD TRUCK AND HIS WIFE A 1998 MUSTANG THAT DOES THE SAME THING. I NOTED THIS ON MY 30000 MILE SERVICE AND FORD DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT THE PROBLEM. IT WAS DISMISSED AND NOT EVEN NOTED ON MY REPAIR RECORD/INVOICE. ALSO, THE REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR HAS BEEN REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME. IN FACT, I ONLY USED IT ONCE OR TWICE AFTER THE FIRST TIME IT WAS REPLACED. .
DRIVING BACK FROM LAS VEGAS NEVADA AT 11:00 AT NIGHT. SUDDENLY THE CAR SWERVED INTO THE RIGHT LANE, THEN THE OUTSIDE MIRROR BROKE. FORTUNATELY I WAS UNINJURED,BUT IF IT HEPPENED 5 MINUTES LATER I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE GORGE AND MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. TRUCK STARTED DEVELOPING CONTROL PROBLEMS, FISHTAILING AND VIBRATING. NOTICED THAT TIRE TREADS WERE SEPARATING. TOOK TO FIRESTONE DEALER AND REPLACED ALL 4. 2 OF THEM WERE BULGING AND SEPARATING A GREAT DEAL, THE OTHER 2 WERE STARTING TO DEVELOP MINOR BULGES. THE SIDE WALLS ON THE 16 INCH FIRESTONE TIRES ON MY 1998 FORD EXPLORER, EDDIE BAUER MODEL BEGAN TO CRACK AND THE THREAD BEGAN TO SEPARATE. I BROUGHT MY SUV INTO A FIRESTONE TIRE AND SERVICE CENTER. THE SERVICE MANAGER INSPECTED THE TIRES AND AGREED THAT THE 16 WILDERNESS AT TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE. HOWEVER, HE SAID THAT HE COULD NOT REPLACE THEM SINCE FIRESTONE HQ SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEIR 16" WILDERNESS AT TIRES. CONTRARY TO HQ CLAIM THE SERVICE MANAGER SEEING THE OBVIOUS DEFECT/FAILURE OF THE TIRES AGREED TO GAVE ME A SMALL ALLOWANCE ON THE TIRES IF I BOUGHT 4 BRAND NEW BRIDGESTONE TIRES. FEARING FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY FULL RETAIL, LESS THE ALLOWANCE IN ORDER TO GET NEW TIRES. I OWN FOUR WILDERNESS TIRES W ITH THE VD MARK, THE RECALLED TIRES; THE TIRE SHREDDED AND I HAD TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP WHICH RESULTED IN RIDING ON THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE RIM. THE RIM BECAME JAGGED AND IT COST $175 TO GET IT SMOOTHED OUT. I AM REQUESTING A REPLACEMENT OF RIM IN ADDITION TO REPLACEMENT OF ALL TIRES ON THE EXPLORER. WHEN I FINALLY CAME TO A STOP, I HAD 3 FLAT TIRES, DAMAGED QTR. PANEL, AND WAS A NERVOUS WRECK. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO A FORD DEARLERSHIP TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE INSPECTED FOR ANY DAMAGE UNDERNEATH. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIRESTONE TIRES BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP. I SPOKE TO MY PARENTS AND TOLD THEM ABOUT MY ACCIDENT. FORMS WERE SENT TO CONSUMER TO FILL OUT IN ORDER TO RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT FOR TIRE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK
I WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND IN THE RIGHT LANE OF IH 35 IN SOUTHERN OKLAHOMA AT ABOUT THE # 3 MILE MARKER. WE HAD LEFT WICHITA, KS EARLIER THAT DAY AND WERE ENROUTE TO OUR HOME IN CARROLLTON, TX. I HAD BEEN NOTICING A SHUDDER IN THE VEHICLE NOT UNLIKE THE ONE I FELT PRIOR TO LEARNING THAT ANOTHER ONE OF THE TIRES HAVING SEPARATED ON A TRIP FROM CORPUS CHRISTI TO SAN ANTONIO EARLIER IN THE SUMMER. THE FIRESTONE DEALER IN S. A. ADVISED THAT YOU COULD NOT TELL BY LOOKING AT THE TIRE ON THE VEHICLE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I PAID AN ADJUSTED PRICE FOR THAT TIRE AND JUST PURCHASED ANOTHER NEW WILDERNESS TIRE ON 7/28/2000 BOTH OF WHICH WERE MOUNTED ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE TWO TIRES ON THE REAR WERE ORIGINALS. I HEARD A LOUD BANG TO MY LEFT AND IMMEDIATELY FELT THE VEHICLE LURCH INTO THE LEFT LANE. I BELIEVE THAT ONLY MY POLICE TRAINING IN DRIVING VEHICLES AT HIGH SPEEDS ENABLED ME TO KEEP CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO STEER IT TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER AND DUE TO THE TIRE ONLY SEPARATING AND NOT LOSING AIR PRESSURE WAS I ABLE TO LIMP INTO GAINESVILLE, TX TO GLEN POLK FORD. I WAS TOLD BY THEM THAT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN A VEHICLE WITH SO MUCH DAMAGE FROM A TIRE SEPARATION. I HAD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER ADJUSTED WILDERNESS TIRE AND WE WERE ON OUR WAY. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED OF SEVERAL LAWSUITS AGAINST FORD AND FIRESTONE FOR FATAL ACCIDENTS RESULTING FROM TIRE SEPARATIONS OF THIS SAME TIRE ON EXPLORER'S AND MINIVANS. AS A COINCIDENCE, WHEN I WENT TO GET AN ESTIMATE ON THE DAMAGE AT A FORD DEALERSHIP IN CARROLLTON, ONE OF THE REPAIR ESTIMATORS SHOWED ME ANOTHER EXPLORER WITH WILDERNESS TIRES IN THE AUTO BODY SHOP WITH EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT REAR DUE TO A TIRE SEPARATION INCIDENT. THE DRIVER OF THAT VEHICLE WAS LUCKY BECAUSE THEY WERE TOWING A TRAILER WITH A PORSCHE ON IT WHEN THE TIRE SEPARATED AND AN ACCIDENT DID NOT OCCUR. *AK( DOT NUMBER: V0H11PY527 TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
MY ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 7:00 P.M. ON 24 JULY 2000 AS I WAS DRIVING TO MY RESIDENCE LOCATED AT [XXX], IN MY 1998 FORD EDDIE BAUER EXPLORER. I WAS TRAVELLING EAST ON HIGHWAY 190 IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE AT 60 MPH, WHEN A CAR PULLED IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK I WAS FOLLOWING. THE TRUCK BRAKE CAUSING ME TO BRAKE. UPON BRAKING, BOTH TIRES ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE VEHICLE EXPLODED CAUSING ME TO GO INTO A TAIL SPIN. I DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD WITHOUT HITTING ANYONE ELSE. FORTUNATELY, I DID NOT HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE OR HURT ANYONE ELSE. MY VEHICLE ENDED UP ROLLING OVER FOUR TIMES AND ENDED UP FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON THE MEDIAN. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY TOTALED, I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE SUFFERED LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. THE POLICE, PARAMEDICS, AND FIREMEN ARRIVING ON THE SCENE COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT I WAS ALIVE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE CUT TO GET ME OUT. THERE WERE WITNESSES TO THIS ACCIDENT WHO PROVIDED STATEMENTS TO THE POLICE. THERE WAS NO CITATION ISSUED. MY RIGHT HAND WAS BADLY CUT, I HAD SEVERED AN ARTERY AND MUSCLE, AND RECEIVED 12 STITCHES. MY LEFT EAR WAS CUT AND HAD TO BE STITCHED. THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY, TO INCLUDE MY HEAD, WAS BADLY BRUISED. THIS ACCIDENT HAS HAD A SERIOUS PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT ON ME. IT TOOK TWO WEEKS FOR ME TO BEGIN DRIVING AGAIN. USAA, MY INSURANCE COMPANY, INFORMED US, AS A RESULT OF THEIR INVESTIGATION, THAT THEY HAD FLAGGED MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THE TIRES WERE THE FIRESTONE TIRES BEING RECALLED AND WERE FOUND AT FAULT FOR CAUSING MY ACCIDENT. SINCE PURCHASING MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN MAY 1998, IT HAS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SERVICE MANUAL, BY COVE FORD IN COPPERAS COVE, TEXAS. WHEELS HAVE ALSO BEEN ROTATED ON A REGULAR BASIS. AT NO TIME WAS I INFORMED THAT MY TIRES WERE UNSAFE OR WERE THE CAUSE OF PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS. CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY ON MARCH 29, THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. SHE WAS APPROACHING RED LIGHT, AND WHEN SHE WENT TO APPLY BRAKES, BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND PROBLEM COULDN'T BE DUPLICATED. BRAKES FELT LIKE A SPONGE, AND CONSUMER WAS FORCED TO PUT VEHICLE IN PARK, AND USE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP.*AK CONSUMER STATES FIRESTONE TIRES DOT W2HL, TIRES MAKE THUMPING NOISES AND FIRESTONE DEALER WILL NOT REPLACE TIRES BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ON RECALL. *SLC
TOOK VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE 48 HOURS PRIOR TO BLOWOUT FOR BALANCE/ROTATE. BLOW OUT OCCURRED GOING 70 MPH. ROAD TEP WAS 113 DEGREES. FIRESTONE TOLD ME ON 7/23 IT WAS DUE TO IMPROPERLY INFLATED TIRES. THEY CHECKED TIRE PRESSURE LESS THAN 48 HOURS PRIOR. THEY VIEWED MY TIRE AND SAID SINCE I DID NOT HAVE ROAD HAZARD I NEEDED TO BUY ANOTHER ONE. I THEN ASKED ABOUT IT'S RELIABILITY AND SAFETY AND THEY SAID THE MEDIA WAS OVERREACTING. BLOWOUT CAUSED MINOR BODY DAMAMGE. HAD TO REPLACE WHEEL AND TIRE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

HAD A TIRE FAILURE EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN RECENT (8/00) NEWS REPORTS - TREAD SEPARATED FROM OTHERWISE WELL-MAINTAINED TIRE GOING 65MPH ON THE FREEWAY - WAS ABLE TO SAFELY NAVIGATE TO A STOP. IT WAS A FIRESTONE ATX WILDERNESS TIRE, STANDARD EQUIPMENT ON THE VEHICLE. CONTACTED DEALER WITH NO SUCCESS SINCE NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED - WENT TO BRIDGESTONE VENDOR AND HAD INSPECTION DONE - CRACKING AT THE TREAD LINE WAS FOUND IN ALL THREE OTHER TIRES (EXCLUDING THE ONE REPLACED 7/19/00). I USE THE VEHICLE FOR MANY LONG DISTANCE TRIPS ACROSS THE DESERT, WITH MY 4YR OLD - FELT FORCED TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES FOR SAFETY SAKE AT MY OWN EXPENSE, AS THE DEALER WOULD DO NOTHING SINCE NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED YET. PLEASE NOTIFY ME AT THE ADDRESS HEREIN IF THE NHTSA DETERMINES A RECALL ON THESE TIRES IS WARRANTED, AS I'D LIKE TO TRY TO RECOUP SOME OF MY EXPENDITURE REPLACING THESE TIRES PRE-RECALL. I BELIEVE THESE TIRES ARE SERIOUSLY DEFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH HEAT CONDITIONS SUCH AS THE SOUTHWEST. WHILE DRIVING AT 70MPH, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE TREAD DISINTEGRATED AND FLEW OFF INTO THE DESERT TAKING ALONG A PIECE OF OUR BUMPER AND SIDE PANEL TRIM. WE WERE RETURNING FROM OUR VACATION AND THE CAR WAS LOADED DOWN WITH LUGGAGE, A COOLER, ETC. JULY 19, MID-AFTERNOON, WHILE TRAVELING NORTH ON I-35W NORTH OF HILLSBORO, TX, MY LEFT FRONT TIRE SUFFERED COMPLETE TREAD SEPARATION, ALERTING US TO A PROBLEM WITH A LOUD SOUND. I PULLED ON TO THE SHOULDER WITH TRUCKS WHIZZING PAST; AND WITH MY 20 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, WE "EYE-CHECKED" TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. WE COULD SEE BLACK STUFF ON THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 75 YARDS BACK AND ASSUMED I'D HIT SOME ROAD DEBRIS. WE SAW THAT THE FRONT-UNDER-BUMPER SPOILER WAS DRAGGING THE GROUND AND THAT THE FRONT LEFT FOG LIGHT WAS DAMAGED. WE RETURNED HOME THAT AFTERNOON, TRAVELING WITHIN THE STREAM OF TRAFFIC. ONCE WE WERE HOME, IN EXAMINING THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK MORE CLOSELY IN MY DRIVE, WE SAW THAT THE TIRE TREAD WAS COMPLETELY GONE WITH JUST THE STEEL BELT SHOWING. I DROVE CAREFULLY TO THE NEAREST TIRE COMPANY THE NEXT MORNING AND HAD TWO FRONT TIRES REPLACED WITH NEW WILDERNESS AT TIRES, UNAWARE THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THIS BRAND OF FIRESTONE TIRE. I HAD MY TRUCK REPAIRED. ON AUGUST 5, 2000, AS A RESULT OF NEWS ACCOUNTS I CALLED FIRESTONE AND FOLLOWED THEIR DIRECTIONS TO HAVE MY BACK TIRES EXAMINED, CARRYING THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE MONEY I'D ALREADY SPENT REPLACING TWO TIRES AND REPAIRING THE DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACE THE REMAINING TWO TIRES IMMEDIATELY, GIVING ME CREDIT FOR MY CONTRACT ON THE TIRES OF APP $25 PER TIRE. THEY REPLACED THE TIRES WITH TWO MORE WILDERNESS AT TIRES. THE TOTAL COST OF THE TIRE REPLACEMENTS AND REPAIR TO THE TRUCK IS $493.04. I NOW HAVE JUST HEARD ON ABC TV NEWS (08/10/00) THAT THE REPLACEMENT TIRES ARE PROBLEMS, ALSO. MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE LUCKY THAT WE DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE TIRE FAILED AND THAT ONLY MINOR DAMAGE WAS SUFFERED BY THE TRUCK.
