FIRESTONE WOILDERNESS AT TIRES CAUSED VIBRATION AND NOISE WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. NLM
1998 FORD EXPLORER EQUIPPED WITH DUAL MEDIA (AM/FM/CASSETTE/CD) RADIO; THERE IS A FAILURE OF THE GRAPHICS DISPLAY (I.E. TIME, STATION IDENTITY). THE DISPLAY SPORADICALLY LIGHTS UP BRIEFLY FOR A FEW SECONDS EVERY FEW MONTHS. ALSO DASHBOARD LIGHTS DO NOT WORK AT GAS GAUGE. *NM
ON FEBRUARY 27, 2000 MY DAUGHTER AND TWO FRIENDS WERE RETURNING TO OUR HOME IN DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS FROM IOWA CITY, IOWA WHERE THEY WERE VISITING MY SON AND OTHER DAUGHTER AT COLLEGE. WHILE ON EASTBOUND INTERSTATE 88, AT APPROXIMATELY MILE MARKER 15, TRAVELING ABOUT 65 MILES PER HOUR, THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE SUDDENLY EXPLODED. PIECES OF THE TIRE FLEW IN ALL DIRECTIONS WITH SOME HITTING BOTH THE WINDSHIELD AND SIDE WINDOWS. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY FELL ONTO THE RIM AND JERKED TO THE RIGHT, FORCING THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE LEFT-HAND LANE, THROUGH THE RIGHT-HAND LANE AND ONTO THE RIGHT SHOULDER BEFORE IT COULD BE STOPPED. WE WERE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT NO ONE WAS IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE OR ON THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER AND ESPECIALLY FORTUNATE THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT ROLL OVER. MY DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS WERE VERY UPSET AND SHAKEN. AFTER REPLACING THE BLOWN TIRE WITH THE SPARE TIRE THEY CONTINUED THEIR TRIP AND ARRIVED IN DOWNERS GROVE. ON FEBRUARY 28TH I TOOK SEVERAL PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND THE REMAINS OF THE TIRE AND I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU. ON FEBRUARY 29TH I WENT TO THE LOCAL FIRESTONE STORE WHERE I STRONGLY INQUIRED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE TIRE AND ITS HISTORY OF BLOWOUTS. I WAS ASSURED BY THE MANAGER OF THE FIRESTONE STORE, RON DEGNER, THAT THERE WAS NO HISTORY OF THIS PROBLEM AND THAT MY DAUGHTER PROBABLY RAN OVER SOMETHING ON THE HIGHWAY. I PAID FIRESTONE $472.78 FOR A NEW TIRE, RECONDITIONED RIM, AND ALL THE OTHER WORK ASSOCIATED WITH REPLACING THE TIRE. I THEN WENT TO JOE MADDEN BODY SHOP, THE FORD DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I STRONGLY INQUIRED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE AND THE WILDERNESS TIRES AND ANY HISTORY OF BLOWOUTS. I WAS ASSURED BY THE BODY SHOP ADJUSTER, BOB SCHRETTER, THAT THERE WAS NO HISTORY OF THIS PROBLEM. I ARRANGED FOR THE APPROPRIATE REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE, AND AFTER TWO VISITS TO THE BODY SHOP PAID A TOTAL OF $331.94. I WAS REIMBURSED $265.09 FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY. *AK
BRAKES' LACK OF LUBRICATION MAY GET THEM TO BECOME RUSTY AND FREEZE UP. *AK
ON MARCH 6, 2000 I WENT TO THE FIRESTONE TIRE STORE IN DAVIE FL. AFTER I EXPLANED WHAT HAD ECCURRED & SHOWED THEM THE TIRE WITH THE TREAD HALF OFF, THEY REPLIED "WILL THAT BE CASH OR CREDIT?" NOW I KNOW THAT THIS WAS NOT A FLUKE & HAVE BEEN TRING TO GET MY MONEY BACK FROM FIRESTONE SO FAR WITH OUT ANY LUCK.( DOT NUMBER: )

WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN AT APPROX. 5-10MPH VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER IN STEERING AND BRAKING SYSTEMS AND VEHICLE BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND KEPT TURNING LEFT INTO TREE. DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. *AK

THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT UPSHIFT AND I WOULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR'S ACCELAERATION POWER UNTIL IT WOULD SLIDE INTO GEAR. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAS GOT OUT ON ME TWICE WHILE DRIVING. ALL OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ZEROS OUT EXCEPT FOR THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER. THIS PROBLEM HAS STILL NOT BEEN FIXED.
PEOOO20, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON A FORD EXPLORER 1998, 235/75R15. CONSUMER FELT A BUMPING FEELING IN THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. HE FELT THIS WAS NOT SAFE, AND MIGHT BE RELATED TO TREADS SEPARATING ON SIZE 15 TIRES. *AK BECAUSE THE FIRESTONE TIRES WERE RELIABLE, THE CUSTOMER TRADED THE VEHICLE FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH DIFFERENT BRAND OF TIRES. *YH
PE-00020; ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON A 1998 FORD EXPLORER, TIRE SIZE P23575R15, TIRES HAD 49 THOUSAND MILES ON THEM. WHEN DRIVING AT 70 MPH LEFT REAR TREAD SEPARATED, CAUSING POOR VEHICLE CONTROL, SPARE TIRE WAS PUT ON VEHICLE. TIRE WAS LATER REPLACED. DIFFERENT INCIDENT WHEN DRIVING CONSUMER NOTICED VEHICLE WAS DRIVING ROUGH. TIRE WAS INSPECTED AND RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD A BALD SPOT AND THE WIRES WERE VISIBLE. *AK THE DOT #VDHL1PY177, THE CONSUMER REPLACED ALL THE TIRES AND IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT. *SLC
BOTH THE FORD DEALER AND TIRE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE DEFECT WAS CAUSED BY A ROAD HAZZARD. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE RIM. THE BEAD OR BUBBLE EXTENDED FROM THE RIM TO THE TREAD AND WAS ABOUT TWO INCHES WIDE AND ABOUT 3/4" HIGH. I REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE AND USED THE DEFECTIVE TIRE AS THE SPARE. DURING MY LAST SERVICING, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE SPARE WAS FLAT. NO REASON WAS GIVEN BY THE DEALER. THIS DEFECT HAS MADE THE TIRES SUSPECT AND MADE MY WIFE VERY NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A THUMPING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR BOARD, WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL. THIS THUMPING FEELS AS IF SOMETHING IS BINDING IN THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE WHEEL. HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 PREVIOUS TIMES AND WILL BE RETURNING FOR THE 4TH. ASAP THIS IS A LEASED VEHICLE. AND THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD. I ALSO HAVE RECEIPTS OF EVERY TIME THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN FOR SERVICE. MY CONCERN IS THAT, IF I WANTED A VEHICLE WITH ALL THESE PROBLEMS, I MIGHT AS WELL OF PURCHASED A USED ONE. IN ORDER TO GET OUT OF THE LEASE, THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CARRY OVER THE REMAINING LEASE TO ANOTHER VEHICLE. I FEEL I DIDN'T CAUSE THESE PROBLEMS, SO WHY HAVE I BEEN SUBJECT TO BEING PENALIZED FOR THE REMAINING LEASE OF 1 YR. CAN YOU HELP?

PRIOR TO RECALL 00T-005, CONSUMER REPLACED FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS DUE TO SEPARATION, AFTER HEARING ABOUT RECALL, CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO GET REIMBURSEMENT, HOWEVER FIRESTONE DENIED CLAIM BY STATING THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED PRIOR TO AUGUST 9 2000, TIRE SIZE P235/75R15, DOT FOR ONE SET WAS 8XHL1PY, CONSUMER HAS REPLACED FIRESTONE TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND AND HAS NOT EXPERIENCED ANY OTHER TIRE SEPARATIONS. *SLC
RECALL 99VO62001/CRUISE/SPEED CONTROL:(RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE), BUT VEHICLE STILL EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH WHICH CAUSED A COLLISION; NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
AFTER DRIVING 10 MINUTES OR MORE VEHICLE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY STALL OR CUT OUT WHILE APPLIING ACCELERATOR FROM A LOW SPEED OR AT A STOP POSTION IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. VEHICLE BEEN IN DEALER SHOP ON TWO OCCASIONS, AND INFORMED THAT NOTHING COULD BE FOUND OR PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS ON THIS MATTER. *AK
VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE TURNING A CORNER AND THE CONSUMER LOSS CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, VEHICLE RAN OFF THE ROAD, THROUGH A FENCE AND SLAMMED INTO A TREE CAUSING INJURY TO CONSUMERS NECK AND BACK. NLM
I AM CONCERNED THAT THE CURRENT RECALL MAY BE TOO LIMITED. ON JANUARY 24, 2000, I EXPERIENCED A TREAD SEPERATION WHILE DRIVING ON OUR STATE HWY 41 AT APPROX. 50 MPH DURING A RAINSTORM. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ON A LEVEL AND STRAIGHT STRETCH OF ROAD WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURED. HAD THE INCIDENT OCCURED 5 MILES EARLIER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN AND MAY NOT HAVE SURVIVED TO FILE THIS REPORT. I TURNED THE TIRE IN TO FIRESTONE THAT DAY AND WAS PROVIDED A REPLACEMENT. I PURCHASED A MATCHED 2ND FOR THE OTHER SIDE. WITH THE CURRENT CONTROVERSY AND RECALL, I CHOSE TO REPLACE MY TIRES WITH THOSE OF A DIFFERENT AND STILL REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER. I NOW HAVE 5 PIRELLI SCORPIONS OF THE SAME SIZE AS THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED FIRESTONE'S DISTRICT OFFICE IN THIS AREA. I WAS TOLD TO BRING MY ORIGINAL WILDERNESS TIRES TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND SUBMIT THE REIMBURSEMENT FORMS. ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO GAURANTEE THAT I WILL BE REIMBURSED, I INFORMED THE LOCAL OFFICE THAT THE DISTRICT OFFICE ASKED THAT THEY MAY WISH TO STUDY THESE TIRES. WHEN I TOLD THE LOCAL STORE STAFF OF THE REGIONAL OFFICE'S DIRECTIVE TO ME, THE MECHANIC INDICATED THEY WOULD LIKELY DESTROY THE TIRES SINCE THEY WERE NOT PART OF THE CURRENT RECALL. I ASKED THE STORE MANAGER STEVE TO CHECK WITH THE DISTRICT OFFICE FIRST. I AM NOT ONLY A PHYSICIAN NOW WORKING IN AN EMERGENCY FACILITY THAT SERVES OUR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES BUT WAS ALSO TRAINED AS A PHYSICIST. IT IS NOT OFTEN THAT YOU HAVE A SCIENTIFIC OBSERVOR INVOLVED IN A REPORTED EVENT SUCH AS THIS ONE. I HOPE THAT ONE OF YOUR STAFF WILL CONTACT ME SOON FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE! THE POLICE REPORT STATES THAT THE RIGHT REAR TREAD CAME OFF AND RESULTED IN A MULTIPLE ROLL-OVER ACCIDENT CAUSING BODILY INJURY TO THE DRIVER. PLEASE ADD THIS TO THE LIST OF FIRESTONE INJURIES ASAP. THE VEHICLE ACCIDENT OCCURRED BEFORE THE FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL WAS MADE PUBLIC, SO THE TIRE AND VEHICLE ARE SO FAR UNRECOVERABLE. INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH AND ABOVE THERE IS A ROARING NOISE THAT COMES FROM THE TRUCK. TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE FIRESTONE TIRES. *AK *ML
FORD PEOPLE SAY THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN THE GASKETS KITS WILL COME IN, YET ITS BEEN 3 MONTHS NOW AND THE VEHICLE RUNS SLUGGISH, AND IS A SAFETY HAZARD IN TRAFFIC. WHERE ARE ALL THE PARTS AT. *AK
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 50MPH. AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE. SHE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND DISCOVERED THAT TIRE WAS FLAT AND RIM HAD CUT INTO THE TIRE. DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WAS DESTROYED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE PULLED TO THE LEFT. CONSUMER STATED THIS COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *AK
I RETURNED TO FIRESTONE STORE AND COMPLAINED ABOUT A DEFECTIVE TIRE WHEN IT APPEARED THAT THE TIRE WAS OUT OF ROUND. THEY CLAIMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TIRES. I RECENTLY ON TWO OCCASIONS, TOOK SUV TO HAVE ALIGNMENT CHECKED. WAS TOLD THAT ALIGNMENT WAS WITHING SPECS, THAT THE FIRESTONE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE AND CAUSSED WHAT THEY CALLED "RADIAL DRIFT".
