THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND THE "O/D OFF" STARTED BLINKING. THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. *TR
I BROUGHT MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER TO MY MECHANIC BECAUSE I NOTICED A VERY LOUD RUBBING NOISE. UPON INSPECTION, MY MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT BOTH REAR COILS WERE CRACKED. MY VEHICLE IS A "SOCCER MOM" CAR AND HAS NEVER BEEN OFF-ROAD. HE HAD TO REPLACE THE COILS, REAR ROTORS AND REAR WHEEL BEARINGS BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE FROM THE COILS. MY VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 124,000 MILES. *TR
MAJOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AT 106K MILES ON MY FORD EXPLORER XLT 4.0L. THIS WAS NOT DUE TO POOR MAINTENANCE OR UP KEEP! SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL GOING 75 MILES AN HR DOWN THE FREEWAY, SHIFTING OUT OF PLACE, ROUGH, SCARY SHIFTS, SHIMMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION JUMPING ALLOVER THE PLACE IS JUST THE BEGINNING. AFTER 5 TRIPS TO THE MECHANIC, FIRST I DID WIRES, THEN PLUGS, THEN UPDATED COMPUTER, FULL TRANNY FLUSH AND FINALLY HAD TO REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION DUE TO THE SOLENOIDS IN THE TRANSMISSION BEING DEFECTIVE AND FAULTY PER A FORD SERVICE MANAGER IN OWATONNA, MN. THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT FORD WAS LOOKING AT MAKING IT A RECALL, BUT IT WASN'T THE TOP OF THEIR PRIORITY LIST AND MAYBE THEY WOULD EVENTUALLY GET TO IT! HE HAS SEEN MANY OF THESE TRUCKS IN THE SHOP WITH THEIR "BUSY" TRANSMISSIONS, AND THE SAME ISSUES! THIS WAS THE ISSUE ALL ALONG..AFTER ALL OF THE SERVICE APPTS, AND MONEY SPENT NOTHING WAS RESOLVED, UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT! $4K LATER JUST FOR THE TRANNY REPAIR! FOR THEIR FAULTY DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION SOLENOIDS! AS IF THE TRUCK DIDN'T ALREADY COST ENOUGH! AND THE TROUBLESHOOTING "BANDAIDS" (WHICH BETWEEN THE TRANNY, DIAGNOSTICS, LABOR ETC TOTAL WELL OVER $5500!!) I CONTACTED FORD AFTER DIRECTED TO DUE SO MY (THEIR) TECHNICIAN AND EMPLOYEE OF 25 YRS. I READ ALL THE POSTS OF DUPLICATE COMPLAINTS (I SEE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER CONSUMERS IN MY SITUATION!), TO INFORM THEM OF THE MONEY I'VE LOST, TIME INCURRED INTO THIS HEADACHE, AND ALL THE DAYS I WENT WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR MY FAMILY THAT I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT WAS THEIR EQUIPMENT! THAT IT WAS THEIR FAULT! CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT THEIR COMPENSATION WAS, IF ANY, GOING TO BE. OR WHAT THEY PLANNED ON DOING ABOUT IT! AND AFTER SEVERAL SERVICE APPT, $5500 LOSS AND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THE REP STATED BASICALLY SAID OH WELL! ITS UR PROBLEM NOT OURS!!! LOL! *TR
I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT DURING A SNOW STORM AND PROCEEDED FORWARD WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN. AS I ACCELERATED AND THE VEHICLE SHIFTED GEARS THE O/D LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THE TRANSMISSION ACTED LIKE IT WAS IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION. NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. *TR

OWNER OF A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT AND CONTINUALLY HAVE THE OVER DRIVE OFF LIGHT FLASHING ON THE DASHBOARD. ALSO THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND WHEN I TAKE IT IN TO DEALER THEY TELL ME THAT THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE AND A NATIONAL RECALL IS IN ORDER. TOOK THE TRUCK INTO HAVE A VIBRATION AND NOISE CHECKED OUT COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. TURNED OUT TO BE A FAILURE OF PASSENGER REAR KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY AND WHEEL BEARING. WENT ON CAR COMPLAINTS.COM TO SEE IF A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS. THERE WERE REPORT OF THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE WITH THE WHEELS ACTUALLY COMING OFF. *TR
MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION LIGHT AND O/D LIGHT IS BLINKING AND MY TRANSMISSION NEXT TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT. I'VE HEARD OF MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM 2002 EXPLORER OWNER LIKE ME. MY OD LIGHT WAS BLINKING, MY RPMS WOULD GO UP AND MY VEHICLE WOULDN'T MOVE. TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TR
EVENT/SITUATION: HESITATES AND CHOKES AT 40-45 MILES PER HOUR WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE, ALONG WITH A SLIGHT RUBBING SENSATION FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL AND GAS PEDDLE. THEY ADVISED REPLACING THE UPPER BALL JOINTS. THEY ALSO STATED A WEAK BATTERY WHICH WAS REPLACED. THIS DID SEEM TO FIX VARIOUS FAULTY FALSE ELECTRICAL ISSUES: INTERIOR LIGHTS STAYING ON AND FALSE LIGHT/DASHBOARD READINGS. FAULTY TRANSMISSION, EMISSIONS OR PLUGS/WIRING HAVE BEEN POSSIBILITIES. I'VE TAKEN IT TO GOODYEAR WHO RECOMMENDED CHANGING OUT THE PLUGS AND WIRES, ALONG WITH A FLUSH. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT FLUSHES CAN RUIN PARTS ON OLDER VEHICLES AND CAUSE OTHER EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS. I FOUND A FEW WEBSITES WERE THERE ARE MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVING THESE SAME ISSUES WITH THE 2002 FORD EXPLORER. FORD HAS BEEN NOTIFIED AND AWARE OF THESE TRANSMISSION ISSUES AND EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS, COVERING UP WITH OTHER LITTLE RECALLS LIKE THE WIRING HARNESS. I, LIKE MANY, ARE BEING FORCED TO PAY FOR FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS. I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AND MAKE FORD PAY FOR RECALLS AND REPAIRS. IT HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP FOR ITS OIL CHANGE AND A WIRING RECALL APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS AGO, IN JANUARY 2010. 2002 FORD EXPLORER WITH DEFECTIVE EMERGENCY BRAKES, THEY PREMATURE CORROSION CAUSING THE PADS TO FALL UP LEAVING SOMEONE WITH OUT A SECONDARY BRAKING SYSTEM. FROM MECHANICS I HAVE SPOKE TO HAPPENS A LOT AND FORD DOESN'T COVER THEM. I HAVE AN EXPLORER AND ONE WHEEL HAS ONLY ONE PAD LEFT THE OTHER DOESN'T HAVE ANY REMAINING. HAVE NOT FIXED DUE TO THE EXPENSE REPAIR BILL ON SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T GET USED THAT OFTEN. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, I NOTICED A SEVERE JERK IN THE BACK END OF MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER. ONCE I SLOWED DOWN, THE O/D INDICATOR STARTED BLINKING AND THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T SHIFT FROM 4TH BACK INTO OVER DRIVE. I HAVE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION FROM MY MECHANIC THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE OVER 800 SUCH COMPLAINTS OF THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM ON A TROUBLESHOOTING WEB SITE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK TONIGHT AND MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER WOULD NOT GO INTO SHIFTING GEAR. IT STARTED BUCKING A LITTLE WHEN I SLOWED DOWN AND TRIED TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. THE O/D LIGHT STARTING BLINKING LIKE CRAZY. BY THE TIME I GOT HOME I COULD ONLY DRIVE ABOUT 25 MILES AN HOUR. I ONLY HAVE 49,653 MILES ON MY VEHICLE!! MY WARRANTY FOR 6 YEARS IS GONE BUT I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET A NEW TRANSMISSION. I WENT ONLINE AND WAS SHOCKED TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. PLEASE FORCE FORD INTO A RECALL. I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF MY VEHICLE HOPING IT WOULD LAST FOR A LONG TIME. *TR
MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER HAS 53,151 MILES ON IT AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS NOR DID I ABUSE THIS VEHICLE IN ANY WAY. THE FIRST INDICATOR OF A PROBLEM WAS THE O/D OFF LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK INTERMITTENTLY. THEN THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND TAKING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME TO SHIFT GEARS. I HAVE MAINTAINED THIS SUV WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES AS WELL AS OTHER ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND I NEED IT TO COMMUTE TO WORK SO I HAD TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I CALLED THE FORD CONSUMER HOTLINE AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM. THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME ANY ASSISTANCE: NO COURTESY REPAIR NOR ANY DISCOUNT ON ANOTHER TRANSMISSION. I PURCHASED A REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION AND HAD IT INSTALLED. IT WAS AN EXTREMELY COSTLY REPAIR. *TR

2002 FORD EXPLORER. O/D LIGHT FLASHING WITH SERVICE ENGINE SOON FLASHING. CAR JERKING BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. FORD SAYS TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION BUT AFTER READING SO MANY OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS I THOUGHT I SHOULD REPORT THIS INCIDENT.
MY ISSUE STARTED LATE IN 2009. THE O/D LIGHT STARTED COMING ON AND FLASHING AND FOR A FEW MONTHS MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT PROPERLY INTO 3RD GEAR AND OVERDRIVE. IT WOULD SLIP AND CLUNK INTO GEAR. THEN WHILE DRIVING UP HILL ON A MAIN ROAD THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. IT WOULD NOT PROPEL MY VEHICLE AND SHUT DOWN RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD WHICH NEARLY CREATED A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT. BOTH FORWARD AND REVERSE DID NOT WORK MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET MY CAR OFF THE ROAD. MY CAR HAS BEEN SITTING IN THE BACK YARD SINCE I CAN NOT AFFORD THE COSTLY REPAIRS. I FEEL THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND FORD SHOULD RECALL THIS ITEM. *TR

2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4.0 ENGINE. REAR COIL SPRING FAILURE. THE VEHICAL HAS NEVER BEEN USED OFF-ROAD AND THE SPRINGS DO NOT HAVE SURFACE RUST BUT BOTH ARE BROKEN. CAR IN FOR RECALL ON CRUISE CONTROL AND FORD "FOUND" ISSUE. TURNS OUT IT IS VERY COMMON IN THIS MODEL AND FORD DEALERS FIND IT A GREAT WAY TO MAKE EXTRA DOLLARS. U-HAUL WILL NOT RENT TRAILERS TO OWNERS OF FORD EXPLORERS. THEY SAY THAT THERE ARE TOO MANY CLAIMS BUT WILL NOT REVEAL NATURE OF CLAIMS. FORD SAID THAT THEY HAVE NO COMMENT ON ISSUE. 2002 FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATOR. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SHIFTING HARD FOR MONTHS BUT IT IS CONSIDERED BY FORD TO BE A "SEALED" UNIT AND IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THAT THE CUSTOMER MAINTAIN THE FLUID LEVEL, SO THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO. IN JAN 2010 THE ACCELERATOR STUCK WHILE ENTERING THE FREEWAY AND WE WERE OUT OF CONTROL, I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE AND HAD TO TURN OF THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY WITH NO SHOULDER AFTER BRUSHING THE GUARD RAIL AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REAR ENDED. THE O/D OFF LIGHT BEGAN BLINKING THAT DAY AND IT WAS TOUGH TO REACH 60MPH. SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I SHOPPED AROUND FOR DIAGNOSTIC. INDEPENDENT TRANS. GUY SAID IT NEEDS COMPLETE REBUILD, FORD DLR AGREES BUT FOR TWICE THE COST. NEW PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. IT MAKES NO SENSE WHY THIS CAR JUST STARTED TO FAIL ON ME LIKE THIS, I'M THE FIRST OWNER AND NOW ITS JUST DECIDED TO DIE AND FORD HAS BEEN NO HELP WHAT SO EVER. NOW I'M LOOKING AT A REPAIR THAT IS 80% OF THE BLUEBOOK VALUE. EACH MECHANIC I'VE BROUGHT IT TO SAYS THIS PROBLEM IS ENDEMIC TO THIS MODEL/YEAR AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. WHY WOULD THEY PUT IN A TRANS. THAT CANNOT BE REASONABLY SERVICED AND MAINTAINED AND DIES JUST AFTER 100K MI. I HAVE A VERY DIFFICULT TIME BELIEVING THIS WAS NOT PLANNED BY FORD AND I WILL NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AGAIN! MY CAR IS NO LONGER SAFE ENOUGH TO DRIVE TO THE GROCERY STORE LET ALONE THE FREEWAY. THIS IS A CLEAR CASE OF IRRESPONSIBLE MANUFACTURING PRACTICES ON FORDS PART AND WARRANTS A RECALL! *TR
TRANSMISSION ON MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER FAILED FOR THE 2ND TIME IN 2009 OF DECEMBER. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPEN AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *TR
2002 FORD EXPLORER GEAR SHIFT BROKE OFF WHEN PUTTING CAR IN PARK. STEERING COLUMN REPLACED BY DEALER WITH USED PARTS. DEALER RETAINED POSSESSION OF OLD PARTS. *TR
2002 FORD EXPLORER CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT RELEASE, THE CAR ACCELERATED EACH TIME AFTER TRYING TO RELEASE THE CRUISE CONTROL. I HAD TO RIDE THE BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR. I SHUT THE RACING ENGINE DOWN AND TRIED TO RESTART AND FOUND THE ENGINE RACED AS SOON AS IT WAS STARTED. IF WE WERE IN TRAFFIC, WE MAY HAVE CRASHED. I STAYED CALM BUT THINKING ABOUT MY WIFE AND SON DRIVING THE CAR AT TIMES, THEY MAY NOT HAVE REACTED AS I DID. THIS WAS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
TRANSMISSION SPUTTERS AND JERKS IN THIRD GEAR AROUND 40MPH. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED WITH 108,000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS MY SECOND DAY DRIVING IT, AND I'M WORRIED I JUST WASTED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS! FROM ALL THE CONSUMER WEBSITES I HAVE READ FORD IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND IS DOING NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. PLEASE RECALL THIS TRANSMISSION AND MAKE FORD FIX MY CAR. 2002 FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION MULTIPLE FAILURE- THIS TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AS DEFECTIVE TWO TIME, FIRST AT AROUND 60,000 MILES THEN AGAIN AT NEAR 150,000 MILES. NOW THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED AGAIN, THIS TIME FAILING TO SHIFT WHILE ENTERING A BUSY HIGHWAY THEN ERRATICALLY SLAMMING INTO GEAR THEN REVVING HIGH AND SLIPPING AS TRAFFIC MANEUVERED TO AVOID THE SLOWING VEHICLE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THEN OUT OF NO WHERE THE ENGINE STARTED TO SOUND EXTREMELY LOUD AND SPITTING SMOKE I PULLED OVER AND AFTER INSPECTION OF THE MOTOR I FOUND A SPARK PLUG LAYING ONTOP OF THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THE COIL LAYING NEXT TO IT. THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE THREADING. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE TO ME IN THE LAST 1.5 YEARS THE FIRST TIME IT WAS UNDER MY WARRANTY FROM USED CAR DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE COMPLETE MOTOR WITH A NEW ONE. AND THE CURRENT INCIDENT HAPPENED TODAY AND PER MY MECHANIC HE IS GOING TO PUT IN A HELICOIL TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE. *TR

WELL THE ELECTRICAL HAS TO DO WITH DOORS AND WINDOW CONTROLS AND LOCKS AND DRIVER GAUGE PANEL SENSORS HAVING NEVER WORKED PROPERLY. THE BODY ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH FAILED PAINTAND POLYMER COATINGS ALONG WITH CRACKED BODY PANEL ON REAR LIFTGATE. *TR
STARTED VEHICLE PUT INTO GEAR AND CAR WILL NOT MOVE WON'T GO IN REVERSE WON'T GO INTO DRIVE. WILL GO INTO GEAR BUT WILL NOT MOVE FORWARD OR BACKWARD. I HAVE HAD VARIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE JUST GOT IT OUT OF THE SHOP FOR 1600.00 IN THE MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER 2009 FOR WHEEL BEARINGS , TIE RODS, AND OIL CHANGE. NOW WITHIN LESS THAN 2MTHS I AM STUCK WITHOUT A VEHICLE TO GET TO WORK AGAIN. I OPENED THE LIFTGATE GLASS TO MY FORD EXPLORER IN ORDER TO LOAD GROCERIES INTO THE BACK. THE GLASS CAME DOWN ON MY HEAD AND I PUSHED IT BACK UP OFF OF ME WHEN IT EXPLODED ALL OVER THE PLACE. THE MOLDING CAME DOWN ONTO MY HEAD AND MY BACK (I WAS STILL LEANING INTO THE CAR). BECAUSE IT WAS VERY COLD OUT, I WAS WEARING A HEAVY COAT WITH A HAT AND THE HOOD PULLED UP ONTO MY HEAD, SO THIS CUSHIONED THE IMPACT ONTO MY BACK AND HEAD. GLASS WAS EVERYWHERE. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT SINCE WE HAVE HAD THE TRUCK, BUT THE LAST ONE WAS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT WOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT LIFTGATES SHOULD JUST BE FALLING OFF OF CARS OR EXPLODING, EVEN IF THE CAR IS 8 YEARS OLD. *TR

HE CONTACT FEELS THE TRANSMISSION FOR THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL SHOULD BE RECALLED SINCE THEIR ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.

DISCOVERED THE REAR HUB BEARINGS ON MY FORD 2002 EXPLORER WERE TOTALLY GONE, IN JANUARY 2010, STARTED WITH A LOUD ROAR IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THE AUTO MECHANIC STATED THAT THE WHEEL WAS VERY DANGEROUS AND WAS ABOUT TO COME OFF THIS CAR. I HAD THE REPAIR WORK DONE IMMEDIATELY, THEN TODAY, MAY 3 2010 NOTICED THE SAME ROAR, THE AUTO SHOP DEEMED IT THE SAME ISSUE, THE REAR HUB BEARINGS WERE REPLACED AGAIN ON MAY 3. THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED, THIS PROBLEM COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. FMC NEEDS TO OWN UP TO THE PROBLEM. I WAS LUCKY TODAY, THE JAN 2010 REPAIR WAS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT I MIGHT NOT BE AS LUCKY THE NEXT TIME. I JUST PRAY IT'S A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE. *TR
2002 FORD EXPLORER REAR WINDOW - THE HINGES OR THE SLIDES ON THE SIDE DID NOT HOLD THE WINDOW UP FOR THE WINDOW SECTION OF THE REAR DOOR. WHILE PARKED, THE GLASS DOOR CAME DOWN ONTO THE HEAD OF A PERSON, THE GLASS IN THE WINDOW EXPLODED HITTING THE PERSON IN THE HEAD, CAUSING THE PERSON TO FALL BACKWARDS INTO THE BOTTOM FRAME OF THE REAR WINDOW ASSEMBLY. THE PERSON SUFFERED A LARGE KNOT ON THEIR HEAD AND GLASS CUTS. THE FORD DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED THIS IS A "COMMON PROBLEM" THEY HAVE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THAT FORD IS AWARE OF IT BUT HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT A RECALL OR TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. *TR
