RECALL CAMPAIGN: RECALL ISSUED FOR LIFTGATE ON 2002 FORD EXPLORER. *BF PRIOR TO THE LIFTGATE BEING REPAIRED IT OPENED TWICE WITHOUT USING THE LATCH RELEASE. THE PLASTIC PANEL WHICH IS A PART OF THE LIFTGATE CRACKED BUT THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPLACE IT UNDER THE RECALL. *NM
LEAKING SEAL ON TOP COVER OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL; DIFFERENTIAL WAS MAKING NOISE. IT WAS FACTORY SEALED WITH SILICONE WHICH IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE LONG-TERM SEAL DUE TO DETERIORATION. FORD SAID SILICONE SEALS ARE NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY BUT RELENTED AFTER MY STRIDENT CIMPLAINT. HUGE COST ($675) TO REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL WHICH WAS REPAIRED AGAIN WITH SILICONE WHICH WILL NOT LAST. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RE-CALL AS THERE WILL BE OIL LEAKS ALL OVER AMERICA. THIS IS AN IMPROPER SEAL DESIGN.*AK

WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED CONSUMER SAW THE TAILGATE FRAME CRACKED AROUND THE GLASS WINDOW. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE CONSUMER WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT, REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GO, WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 50 MPH. DROVE HOME WITH BRAKES APPLIED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE CABLE.
TRANSMISSION FAILED DURING ORDINARY DRIVING. TRANSMISSION REQUIRED NEARLY THREE WEEKS TO REPAIR AT A COST OF $2,800.*AK
GAS PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, AS A RESULT CONSUMER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON ITS OWN. CONSUMER HAD TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE. DEALER SAID THAT THE THROTTLE CABLE SEIZED.JB...WHILE MAKING LEFT HAND TURN THROUGH AN INTERSECTION THE GAS PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND RPMS WENT TO THE TOP. USED BOTH FEET ON BRAKES TO STOP. HOWEVER, VEHICLE WON'T STOP. TURNED VEHICLE OFF IN DRIVE, THEN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL , RPMS LNCREASED. TURNED VEHICLE OFF, COULDN'T PUT VEHICLE BACK INTO PARK OR PULLKEY OUT OF IGNITION. CALLED AAA TO TOW VEHICLE TO DEALER. IT WAS FIXED WITHOUT CHARGE TO CONSUMER BECAUSE OF EXTENDED WARRANTY. *AK
THE LUGS: BOLTS ON THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL HAVE BROKEN OFF TWICE CAUSING THE WHEEL TO COME OFF. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN OCTOBER 2004 AND SECOND TIME WAS IN JANUARY 2005. 1ST TIME I WAS GETTING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND THE 2ND TIME I WAS JUST GETTING OFF THE EXPRESSWAY. THIS PROBLEM HAS COST ME OVER $2000 IN REPAIRS, TIME LOST ON MY JOB, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY - IT COULD HAVE COST ME MY LIFE OR THE LIVES OF OTHERS. WHEN I SPOKE WITH A FORD REPRESENTATIVE, I WAS TOLD, " SORRY" AND SENT A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SURVEY. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HAS NOT OCCURRED TO OTHERS. I AM RELUCTANT TO EVEN DRIVE THIS THING ANYMORE BUT OWE TOO MUCH ON IT TO GET RID OF IT. IF NOTHING IS DONE TO MAKE ME FEEL SAFE IN MY EXPLORER, THEN IT WILL BE THE LAST FORD PRODUCT I WILL EVER OWN AND WILL ENCOURAGE EVERYONE I COME IN CONTACT WITH TO AVOID FORD PRODUCTS AS WELL AND I'M GOING TO PUT A SIGN ON THE BACK FOR EVERYONE TO SEE LETTING THEM KNOW THAT THE EXPLORERER IS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HINGE IN THE REAR LIFTGATE WAS FRACTURED AND THE LIFTGATE WOULD NOT REMAIN IN PLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V442000 (STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS) YET THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HE WOULD BE LIABLE FOR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 115,000.

PARTS TO REPAIR THE RECALL WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST 5 MONTHS. NOW, THE LIFT GATE HAS CRASHED AND BROKEN AND THE DEALER IS TELLING THE OWNER THAT THE VEHICLE IS 4000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE OWNER WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. DOOR LOCKS FREEZE AT TEMP. BELOW 30 DEG. F. THIS OCCURS ON BOTH FRONT DOORS. THIS PREVENTS THE LATCH FROM CLOSING COMPLETELY. THE PASSENGER DOOR HAS OPENED WHEN THE TRUCK MADE A RT. HAND TURN. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGING ISSUE. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN IN LAST YEAR FOR THIS ISSUE. THE DOOR STRIKER WAS ADJUSETED,. THE DEALER WILL NOT COVER THIS UNDER WARRENTY BECAUSE IT IS NO LONGER COVERED.*AK
THE 2002 FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION HAS WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUES. THESE COMPLAINTS ARE ALL OVER THE INTERNET. THE TRANSMISSION FAILS IN AS LITTLE AS 23,000 MILES AND NEEDS A COMPLETE RE-BUILD. THE "O/D" LIGHT OF MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER LIT UP WITHOUT WARNING WHILE I WAS TURNING. ENGINE "REVVED" BUT DIDN'T ACCELERATE. ONCOMING CARS SWERVED TO AVOID ME. THIS WAS AN UNSAFE SITUATION, AS I EXPECTED THE VEHICLE TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE TOTALLY REBUILT, FOR $2,400, SINCE I WAS 4000 MI OUT OF WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH <3 YEARS. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER IF FORD WOULD COVER IT. THE ZONE PERSON, ADVISED NO. I PHONED CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE, AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE DEALER/FIELD DISCRETIONARY FUNDS TO PAY FOR REPAIRS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY, BUT ONLY FOR "LOYAL" CUSTOMERS. I WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND HAD MY MAINTENANCE DONE AT THE DEALER. I ASKED WHAT MAINTENANCE SHOULD BEEN DONE ON THE TRANSMISSION. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NONE. I SPOKE WITH A GENTLEMAN IN THE QUALITY DEPARTMENT AT A LOCAL TRANSMISSION PLANT, WHO SAID THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE, BUT THAT FORD WOULDN'T OFFER ANY HELP BECAUSE "MONEY IS TIGHT". HE SAID THAT THE BANDS IN MY TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SUPERCEDED TWICE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND A TECH BULLETIN EXISTED, EXPLAINING THIS TO DEALERSHIPS. I READ MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE! I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND WHY FORD HONORS A SECRET WARRANTY FOR "LOYAL" CUSTOMERS YET OFFERS NO RECOURSE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WERE PUT IN THE SAME UNSAFE SITUATION, JUST BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED. I HAD THE REPAIR DONE AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR FACILITY. FORD ADVISES THEY WILL NOT TAKE ANY FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE THE REPAIR WAS DONE AT AN INDEPENDENT. I AM ONE OF MANY CONSUMERS WHO MUST DRIVE IN A DEFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS VEHICLE, DUE TO THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. IT FAILED ME ONCE WITHOUT WARNING, I PAID $1,200 FOR REPAIR, AND APPROACH INTERSECTIONS WITH TREPIDATION DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF MY TRANSMISSION UNEXPECTEDLY SLIPPING AGAIN. I WOULD WELCOME CONTACT AT 248.808.1279 TO DISCUSS RESOLUTION OF THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE.
STEERING COLUMN BROKE WHILE DRIVING. CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND IT CRASHED INTO A GUARD RAIL. UPON IMPACT, BOTH AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES, AND WENT TO THE DOCTOR ON HER OWN. VEHICLE WAS TOWED, AND TOTALED OUT BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY.*AK
I OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLS BOUGHT NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED IN OCTOBER 2004 FOR THE REAR LIFT GLASS HINGE (04S20). I HAVE BEEN WAITING OVER 2 MONTHS FOR PARTS TO BE AVAILABLE. IT WAS FINALLY REPAIRED ON 1/6/05 AT KEATING FORD DEALERSHIP. TODAY 1/9/05 MY WIFE HAD DRIVEN TO THE GYM AND WAS CALLED TO THE FRONT DESK. CRACKLING HAD BEEN HEARD BY FELLOW GYM MEMBERS PRIOR TO THE REAR GLASS SHATTERING TO PIECES AND METAL FRAME IS BUCKLED. NO EVIDENCE OF VANDALISM WAS PRESENT. THE NEW PARTS MUST HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE OR INSTALLED IMPROPERLY. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY, LIBERTY MUTUAL. THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED SHE HAD A CALL A FEW DAYS AGO ABOUT A SIMILAR INCIDENT FROM ANOTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNER. I HAVE CONTACTED MY DEALER AND LEFT A MESSAGE BUT UNFORTUNATELY, BEING A SUNDAY, IT IS CLOSED. *AK

2002 FORD EXPLORER HAS HAD 2 REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS AND OVER $1,800 IN TRANSMISSION WORK NOT RELATED TO THE REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS. *AK
THE PANEL JUST BELOW THE BACK LIFT GATE WINDOW ON MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER HAS CRACKED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM IN TWO PLACES. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE 2002 FORD EXPLORER. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE EXACT SAME CRACKS AND THERE ARE 100'S OF REPORTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT. FORD CORPORATE SAID TO CONTACT A DEALER ABOUT THE PROBLEM SO THEY OFFERED NO HELP WITH THE SITUATION. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE HOFFMAN FORD DEALERSHIP IN EAST HARTFORD, CT AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD SPLIT THE REPAIR COST WITH ME. THEY NEVER FOLLOWED THRU WITH THE OFFER. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO CALL ME WHEN THEY HAD THE PART BUT THAT NEVER HAPPENED. IT IS OBVIOUS FORD CORPORATE KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM AND THAT THIS IS A DEFECT. THE OUTSIDE OF A CAR SHOULD NEVER CRACK FOR NO REASON. *TR
MULTIPLE WHEEL BEARING FAILURE ON 2002 FORD EXPLORER 4X4, 42,000 MILES. LOUD NOISE PROMPTED ACTION BEFORE COMPLETE FAILURE. COMPLETE FAILURE MAY HAVE RESULTED IN WHEEL LOCK-UP AND POSSIBLE CRASH. DESPITE COMPLAINT AND RESQUEST FOR THE REPAIR TO BE COVERED GIVEN LIMITED MILEAGE, NO ASSISTANCE FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY. DEALER DID REPLACE ONE UNIT AT NO CHARGE. FORD PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF ANOTHER OWNER WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM, HAD TO REPLACE ALL FOUR WHEEL BEARINGS. THIS IS CERTAIN TO BECOME A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM AS THESE CARS AGE IF FORD IS NOT HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEFECT AND FORCED TO TAKE PREIMPTIVE ACTION TO SAVE LIVES.*AK
REAR DRIVE AXLE HAS EXCESSIVE GEAR WHINE UNDER LOAD FROM 50-70 MPH. *AK
MY COMPLAINT IS IN REGARDS TO THE TRANSFER CASE SELECTION MODULE ON MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER. DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THE SELECTION MODULE IS A COMMON PROBLEM, BUT STILL WANT TO CHARGE FULL PRICE FOR A NEW SELECTION MODULE WHEN IT'S JUST A SMALL PLASTIC PIECE INSIDE THE MODULE THAT FAILS. *JB
AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF HEARING A "WHOOSHING" TIRE SOUNDS FROM THE BACK OF THE 02 FORD EXPL XLT, AND DEALERS TELLING US THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG, TOOK VEHICLE TO A LOCAL SERVICE CENTER AND HAD TO HAVE REAR SUSPENSION/AXLES REPLACED (4/04) AND ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE 2 BACK TIRES BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE. NOW, 1/05, SAME NOISE IS PRESENT AND WEAR ON BACK TIRES, WE ARE NOW BEING TOLD THAT THE BACK SUSPENSION/AXLES ARE BAD AGAIN AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. LESS THAN ONE YEAR AND WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY FORD NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM. VEHICLE HAD 78K MILES ON IT. *AK
1. NO EVENT LEADING TO FAILURE. 2. REAR HATCH APPLIQUE PANEL IS DAMAGED AND CRACKED. 3. NOTHING. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS 45K MILES. 9000 MILES BEYOND THE WARRANTY. *JB
OVER TIME NOTICED JERKING WHILE UPSHIFTING. LOUD WINDING NOISE AT HIGH WAY SPEEDS WHEN ON GAS PEDAL. DRIVE MOSTLY HIGHWAY AND STILL EXTREMLY POOR MPG. 9.8-10.6MPG AVERAGE ON HIGHWAY! ALSO PASSENGER SIDE REAR SEAT BELT DOES NOT RETRACT. HAD REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
VEHICLE GOES INTO NEUTRAL WHEN BRAKING HARD AND WHEN TURNING VEHICLE OFF, OUTSIDE UNDER DRIVER SEAT A WINDING DOWN NOISE IS HEARD 9 TIMES OUT OF TEN WHEN TURNING VEHICLE OFF. SAME THING HAPPENED A WEEK LATER. HOME DEALERSHIP ADVISED US THAT THE OTHER DEALERSHIP INSTALLED THE WRONG PART AND IT COULD HAVE CAUSED LIFE-THREATENING PROBLEMS....WE CONTACTED THE OTHER DEALERSHIP AND ADVISED THEM WHAT OUR HOME DEALERSHIP SAID...OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP DENIED THIS...ANYWAY...HOME DEALERSHIP INSTALLED NEW PART...VEH OK....THEN WHEEL BEARINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED IN FRONT 1ST LEFT SIDE-THEN RIGHT. MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER WITH 49,000 MILES MAKES A WHINING SOUND WHEN I DRIVE ABOVE 50 MPH WHICH GOES AWAY WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS. IT COMES BACK AS SOON AS I PRESS BACK DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR A LITTLE OVER ONE YEAR. IT APPEARS TO BE A PERVASIVE PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. *JB
TWO LARGE CRACKS IN BACK BODY PANEL BELOW BACK WINDOW. APPEARED SPONTANEOUSLY AND HAVE STEADILY WORSENED. TWO SEPARATE DEALERS HAVE STATED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, BUT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $400-500 TO HAVE IT FIXED. HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM IN MANY OTHER 2002 EXPLORERS AND HAVE NEVER HEARD OF FORD OWNING UP TO THE PROBLEM OR FIXING THESE CARS. *JB
THE SAME THING I HAVE BEEN READING HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS OF TIMES ONLINE FROM OTHER EXPLORER OWNERS - O/D LIGHT FLASHING, HUMMING NOISE, RPMS REVVING UP WAY TOO HIGH WHEN ACCELERATING, SKIPPING 2ND GEAR ALTOGETHER. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO HAVE THIS FIXED, AND STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT,WITH THE THOUSANDS OF OTHER EXPLORER OWNERS THAT HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, THIS SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT FORD SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR. CRACK IN REAR LIFTGATE DUE TO THE MISALIGNMENT OF THE HINGES WHICH LED TO THE WINDOW NOT BEING ABLE TO CLOSE CORRECTLY. *NM
THERE IS A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC JUST UNDER THE LIFTGATE GLASS DOWN TO THE LIFTGATE HANDLE. IT JUST APPEARED ON A COLD MORNING IN NEW JERSEY WITH NOTHING DONE TO CAUSE IT. I KNOW FORD MAKES VEHICLES THAT CAN WITHSTAND THE COLD WITHOUT CRACKING, RIGHT? HOPEFULLY, THIS WILL NOT AFFECT THE STURDINESS OF THE REAR GLASS. BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAS 37000 MILES ON IT, FORD WOULD NOT FIX IT. NOT THE WAY TO GET RETURN CUSTOMERS.*AK
