WENT TO LOAD STUFF INTO THE BACK AND NOTICED A SPIDER CRACK ON THE PLASTIC PANEL RIGHT BELOW THE REAR GLASS PANEL. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT GOT THERE BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE REPORTED BY ALMOST ALL 05 EXPLORER OWNERS AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED UNDER FORD'S LIABILITY SINCE IT IS SUCH A COMMON ISSUE AND NOT JUST A SMALL AMOUNT OF VEHICLES OCCURRING THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING COOLANT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING PIECE HAD MELTED AND CAUSED THE LEAK. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PANEL UNDER THE REAR WINDOW SPLIT AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW, WHICH EXTENDED TO THE FORD EMBLEM. THE DAMAGE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER TIME AND THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE WINDOW COULD EXPLODE WHEN SHE DROVE THROUGH A CAR WASH. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT HEAT COULD BE A FACTOR IN THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE REAR LATCH FAILED TO ENGAGE WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO CLOSE THE REAR WINDOW. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT SHE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS SINCE THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. ALSO, THE TIRE SENSOR GAUGE REMAINED ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE TIRE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE SPARE TIRE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD TO CHECK THE AIR PRESSURE OF THE TIRES ON A CONTINUAL BASIS. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH AND TURNING LEFT TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE WHEEL DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE LUGS NUTS HAD SHEARED OFF, CAUSING THE FAILURE. AS A RESULT, THE LUG NUTS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE HAD RECURRED WITH BOTH OF THE REAR TIRE LUG NUTS, WHICH STARTED TO SHEAR OFF AND CAUSED A LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 115,000. *TR

TL-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE FILLED THE FUEL TANK UP AND THE LET THE VEHICLE SIT OVER NIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FOLLOWING MORNING SHE WENT TO START THE VEHICLE BUT THE FUEL TANK WAS VERY CLOSE TO EMPTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. AP *TR
COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 99K MILES AND COST TO COMPLETELY REBUILD IS $2400. CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO FORD RECOMMENDATIONS. TRANSMISSION REPAIR INDICATED THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS USED IN FORD EXPLORERS DURING THESE YEARS. FORD SHOULD PERFORM A RECALL AS THIS COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS GIVEN THE LACK OF WARNING BEFORE FAILURE OCCURS. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

TRANSMISSION FAILURE - DRIVING HOME AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. NO DRIVE, NO REVERSE, DOES NOT GO. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW AND HAVE HAD ALL OF THE RECOMMENDED SERVICES PERFORMED BY MY LOCAL AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER. AFTER IT FAILED, I SEARCHED THE WEB FOR COMPLAINTS, I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE BUYING IT. NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT THE FACT THAT FORD IS NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR THIS VERY COMMON FAILURE!! PARKED AND WENT INTO GROCERY STORE. CAME OUT GOING TO WHERE I HAD PARKED. AS I WALKED UP TO THE BACK OF MY VEHICLE I NOTICED A VERTICAL CRACK IN THE PANEL UNDER THE REAR WINDOW. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I WAS AT THE WRONG VEHICLE BECAUSE I KNEW MY 2005 EXPLORER WAS NOT CRACKED. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION,I REALIZED THIS WAS MY VEHICLE. I HAVE SEEN ANOTHER EXPLORER AROUND TOWN WITH A VERTICAL CRACK IN THE SAME SPOT. SEEMS TO ME THIS JUST MIGHT BE A DESIGN PROBLEM. BELIEVE FORD MOTOR SHOULD REPAIR AT NO COST. *TR *JS
NOTICED CRACK FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OF REAR BODY PANEL APPLIQUE ALONG SIDE OF FORD EMBLEM. *TR
THE PAINT IN THE VALLEYS ON THE ROOF HAS ALL FLAKED OFF AND IS RUSTING. PROBLEM WITH THE PAINT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE 2 YEARS AGO AND FIRST NOTICED IT LAST YEAR. *TR
AFTER FILLING UP MY TANK, THE FUEL GAUGE DROPPED TO EMPTY, AND THE CHECK ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. ALSO THE SYSTEM THAT TELLS ME HOW MANY MILES TO EMPTY ONLY SHOWS DASHED INSTEAD OF AN ACTUAL NUMBER. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON AND PRICEY PROBLEM. THE DAY AFTER I FILLED UP, IT JUMPED TO HALF A TANK AND THEN BACK TO EMPTY. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE AND I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS. I HAVE ONLY HAD THE TRUCK 3 MONTHS. *TR

VEHICLE DRIVE BELT FALLS OFF WITHOUT NOTICE DUE TO CRANKSHAFT PULLEY SEPARATING FROM ENGINE MAKING VEHICLE INOPERATABLE. *TR
WHENEVER I FILL UP WITH GAS THE GAS GAUGE GOES TO EMPTY AND THE MILE TO EMPTY NUMBERS BECOME TWO BLANK SPACES AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. *TR
JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR. TRANSMISSION WAS HAVING TROUBLE SHIFTING GEARS AND IS NOW SLIPPING. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL, AS I HAVE FOUND TOO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TRANSMISSION FALLING APART. FORD SHOULD FIX THIS ISSUE AND REPLACE WITH A DIFFERENT TRANSMISSION. I DON'T WANT TO SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON A TRANSMISSION THAT IS BOUND TO FAIL AGAIN. THIS IS A BLATANT MISSED RECALL. WHILE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY IN A PARKED POSITION, THE UPPER TAILGATE PANEL, DIRECTLY TO THE RIGHT AND RUNNING RIGHT NEXT TO THE OVAL FORD EMBLEM, A 1/4" WIDE CRACK THAT RUNS VERTICALLY ON THE BACK PANEL APPEARED. THIS UPPER PANEL OF THE TAILGATE ALSO OPENS UP JUST THE WINDOW PART OF THE TAILGATE. THE TAILGATE ON THIS EXPLORER CAN OPEN UP TWO WAYS. ONE WAY BEING THE ENTIRE TAILGATE IS LIFTED SO THAT IT IS OPEN LIKE FOR A DOG TO JUMP IN AND IS THEN LEVEL WITH THE INTERIOR BACK PART (WITH THE SEATS DOWN), AND IT ALSO OPENS UP WITH JUST THE WINDOW PART WHICH IS WHERE THE CRACK IS. THIS CRACK IS SO WIDE THAT IT ALLOWS MOISTURE, SNOW, WATER, RAIN, SALT, ETC. TO SEEP INTO THE COMPONENTS WHICH HOUSE THE ELECTRICAL AND TAIL LIGHT, STOP LAMPS AND TURN SIGNALS. IT ALSO COMPROMISES THE BODY STRUCTURE AND SAFETY FEATURES. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS OF THIS HAPPENING AS I DID A GOOGLE SEARCH. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING AND/OR PARTS OR COMPONENTS AND BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS, THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE. AT THE TIME OF THIS OCCURRENCE, MY BACK TAILGATE WAS FACING WEST WITH THE SUN SHINING ON IT. COULD IT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE COMPONENTS SHRINKING AND EXPANDING? THE GEARS IN THE POWERED BRAKE/GAS PEDAL ASSEMBLY SEEM TO STRIP. THEN THE BRAKE/GAS PEDAL WON'T CHANGE POSITION. THAT CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR THE DRIVER BECAUSE THE PEDALS GET STUCK TOO FAR AWAY FOR SOME DRIVERS AND TOO CLOSE FOR OTHERS. DESPITE MY MAINTAINING THE VEHICLE IN PERFECT CONDITION, LIKE MANY OTHER FORD EXPLORERS, MINE DEVELOPED A CRACK ALONG THE FORD LOGO ON THE REAR LIFT GATE, RUNNING FROM THE WINDOW TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIFT GATE. TEMPERATURES HAVE NOT BEEN EXTREME IN OUR AREA, YET THE CRACK APPEARED WITHIN A TIME FRAME OF 5 HOURS. FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE EXPLORERS. *TR

DROVE THE VEHICLE TO WORK AND WENT TO LEAVE AND I HAD NO REVERSE. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SLAMMING INTO REVERSE AND THEN ENGAGING PRIOR TO THIS-BUT NO SLIPPING OR ANYTHING ELSE. I HAD THE FLUID CHANGED AND THERE WERE NO TEETH OR ANY METAL IN THE FILTER OR PAN-BUT THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. SPOKE WITH 3 TRANSMISSION SHOPS IN MY TOWN AND ALL TOLD ME THE 05 EXPLORERS HAD JUNK TRANSMISSIONS. THAT THE FLUID IN PART OF THEM FROM THE FACTORY WAS BAD AND THE TRANNY ITSELF WAS JUST A BIG MISTAKE. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED- $1338 LATER, I HAVE A REBUILT 'JUNK' TRANSMISSION. I HAVE OWNED FORDS IN THE PAST AND LOVED THEM, BUT MY EXPLORER ENDED THIS LOVER AFFAIR. EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK ONLINE THERE ARE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE- AND NO ONE IS MAKING FORD DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR
STARTED TO FEEL A LOSS OF POWER AND HEAR KNOCKING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE SO TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST GARAGE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AND I WAS TOLD US THAT IT WAS THE TIMING CHAIN AND THAT THE TIMING CHAIN ON A LOT OF THE NEW FORDS HAVE BEEN GOING BAD. NO WARNING, NO WARNING. IT IS RECOMMENDED BY EVERYONE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES TO REQUEST AN INVESTIGATION CONCERNING THE BUSINESS PRACTICES OF A LOCAL AUTO REPAIR CENTER. *TGW THE CONSUMER DID NOT THINK, THE REPAIR FACILITY WAS ACTUALLY PERFORMING THE SERVICES ON HIS VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION, DUE TO LOW TIRE TREAD. HE STATED HE WAS JUST IN THE REPAIR FACILITY ONE MONTH PRIOR, AND NO MENTIONED TO HIM, THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES. ALSO, THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, IT WAS DETERMINED THE NEW ALTERNATOR WAS DEFECTIVE. *JB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THE GEAR SHIFT WAS ABLE TO BE MOVED FROM PARK TO REVERSE AND DRIVE WITHOUT THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION OR THE VEHICLE BEING ON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A CHILD WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT WHILE IT WAS TURNED OFF AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARDS. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO BE STOP THE VEHICLE, GET INTO IT AND APPLY THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE INSPECTED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CORRECTION TO BE MADE OR RECALL RELATED TO THE VIN. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
TOOK OUR 2005 FORD EXPLORER TO SERVICE DEPT. BEFORE WARRANTY EXPIRED-PREVIOUSLY ALEXANDER FORD, NOW FORD OF MURFREESBORO. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SLIPPING PERIODICALLY AT THE TIME. THEY DROVE IT & SAID NOTHING WAS NOTICEABLE. I INDICATED TO THEM THAT IT SLIPPED MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE EVERY MONTH OR SO. NOW VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED ON ME. I HAD A CAR IN FRONT OF ME & WHEN IT FINALLY LET UP, I ALMOST HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME-WITH A BABY IN A CAR SEAT IN THE BACK SEAT. WHEN I SLAMMED ON MY BREAKS AFTER THE TRANSMISSION KICKED IN, I SUFFERED WHIPLASH. IT SCARED ME TO DEATH. THERE APPEAR TO BE SO MANY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH THE 2005 EXPLORERS. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND SOMEONE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT FOR A RECALL. PARKING BRAKE SHOES BROKEN. ADVISED DURING REGULAR SERVICE THAT SHOES WERE BROKEN DURING EARLIER SERVICE AND WAS ADVISED TO WAIT UNTIL REAR BRAKES REQUIRED SERVICE SINCE PARKING BRAKE IS RARELY USED. DURING SERVICE ON 9/21/2011 REQUEST REPAIR OF PARKING BRAKE IN WHICH THE SHOES WERE REPLACED AT COST OF $424.19. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE TIMING CHAIN OR CHAINS (THERE ARE 5 AND THE ENGINE HAS TO COME OUT TO REPLACE THE REAR CHAIN) BROKE AND THE PISTONS HIT AND BENT THE VALVES. (ENGINE SHOT). I RELIGIOUSLY CHANGE THE OIL WITH SYNTHETIC EVERY 3-4000 MILES. THIS IS A DEFECT THAT FORD IS HIDING- THERE ARE COMPLAINTS GALORE ON THE INTERNET.
