NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Ford F-150. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Turning right the vehicle's steering and brakes locked up. The traction control system warning indicator illuminated. Rac and pinion unit replaced by Ford Dealer. Same problem occurred within 50 miles. Returned to Dealer. Dealer is unable to reproduce problem.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while turning on the vehicle, the power assist failure warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive to his residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
This is a follow up to a complaint I made on 7-25-2022. Ref# 114-75779. My truck will not start sometimes or it will just shut off while driving. I have searched online and found that the fuel pump fuse in the distribution box is being burned. I have had it checked by two Ford mechanics and they both have confirmed that is the issue. My truck has just shut off 4 times in the last two weeks while driving without warning. The first time was July 22, the next was July 24, 2022. I've been very fortunate to avoid an accident so far. When this happens, I have to replace the fuse before it will restart, so I'm having to keep a pack of fuses with me at all times. The earliest any dealer close can repair it is August 12. This SHOULD be a safety recall with the vehicle just shutting off with no warning at all. Ford makes the fuse relocation kit to fix this issue, so it us a known problem. I'm very concerned as to why this hasn't been a safety recall, seeing the symptoms that are listed in the fuse relocation kit sold by Ford. Today, August 02, my truck shut off twice while driving in traffic and the fuel pump fuse slot was very hot and smoking. I replaced the fuse so I could get it out of the roadway and not cause an accident.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while reversing, the back-over prevention camera image was displayed on the wrong side of the screen, creating a visibility hazard. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed and determined that the camera unit was faulty and needed to be replaced. The backup camera was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 250,000.
The truck will randomly downshift while driving losing all power on the highway not allowing the truck to increase in speed until it is turned off and restarted. After it is restarted, the speedometer stays at 0 not showing how fast we are going. While this is happening, the check engine light flashes. I have contacted the Ford dealership in our area multiple times over the last month, and they have yet to respond on the concern. Not all the trucks electrical components are working. The radio, power locks, power windows, and horn do not work. In July 2022 the truck was taken to a Ford dealership to be diagnosed, and they couldn't find a reason/cause for this in order to get the truck repaired.

My power steering assist light and my advance track light came on then my steering locked up and I had no control of my vehicle. Luckily I was pulling Into my drive so no one was hurt. I had my 7 year old gson with me too. It could of been fatal. I did some research there's a recall on this on vehicles before 2012 and after 2012 but not on my vehicle which is a 2012 my rack and pinion went out I don't have any backup lights this could have been a serious accident and if anything would have happened to my grandson oh boy Ford but I want to know why my truck doesn't have a recall hurt

Our truck suddenly went into "limp-mode," for no reason. When we turned the truck off and back on, it was fine.
It appears the master cylinder is leaking into the large black vacuum piece. Parked and went into shop in Safeway. Then came out and loaded kids, wife and groceries. Started truck, started to back out of spot, then tried to stop and no brakes, low brake fluid then comes up. I threw it into park and tried to think what is going on. Check the brake fluid and it is empty. Then go to gas station and add 2.5 pints. Start truck and wife pulls brakes and gets back to working, but notice the brake fluid is decreasing from resivior but seemed to stop. I topped it off and started to drive because brakes were working. After driving about 10 blockes, the low brake fluid alarm comes up again and I pull over and no brakes. Finally investigate and still no leaks anywhere. Finally look up online and find this is a common problem and you have recalled 2014 through 2017, but not 2012 or 2013, but seems to be a problem with this year as well.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH with the defroster engaged, the contact heard a loud popping sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact noticed that the rear passenger's side window had shattered. The contact was able to continue driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000.
Wipers will not turn off, they will continue to wipe while driving for days even in the off position, had to pull the fuse in order to stop the intermittent wipe, when it rains i have to re install the fuse. After months of dealing with this problem I drilled a hole in the dash, mounted a switch and ran a wire to the fuse box so I didn't have to open the hood just to get the morning doo off, the switch works great.
While driving at any speed, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifts into first gear causing a risk of losing control or crashing. This incident has occurred 3 times in the last week and has all the same symptoms related to Ford Recall # 19N01 & 19S19.
The issue that is wrong with this vehicle matches a previous recall that Ford has put out for the same year, make, model. However, this vehicle was excluded from the recall. The recall is 19S07 for the other vehicles. This recall needs to be extended to more than just the 1.2 million vehicles that were recalled. This issue is common in this vehicle, even in ones that were not included in the call. This is a Ford issue, not a customer/owner issue. It caused my vehicle to lose control of the speedometer, it dropped to zero. It caused my vehicle to get stuck in a gear and not be able to move out of it. This causes a safety issue for not only myself but other vehicles around. It can cause car accidents due to the sudden jerking and decrease in speed. I have had this issue diagnosed by a Ford dealer AND independent transmission shop. The issue gives no warning and pops up randomly. People’s lives are at risk. EXTEND THE RECALL!!!!!
The contact owns a 2012 F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted and the speedometer went to zero. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V248000 (Power Train). The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
Vehicle lost its power in the power steering system, and you lose all control over the vehicle and you can't move left or right Making it very dangerous for me while it occurred, since I was unable to move the car towards any direction.
On 22MAY2022 I started my vehicle and started pulling out of a parking space when I lost braking power. The failure resembled a similar issue I had in the past when the electronic vacuum pump failed and the brake pedal felt hard and required significant additional effort to bring the vehicle to a stop. The electronic vacuum pump and fuse has been replaced by the dealership previously. The unexpected brake failure caused me to roll farther than I wanted and hit the rock on my passenger side, rear door, causing minor body damage. Ford Customer Service said Customer Satisfaction Program 15N05 is a one time replacement and this vehicle is no longer eligible for the program since it has already been serviced. Additionally, they said any repair associated with this event is limited to 15N05 so body damage would not ne covered.
Vehicle shifts from a high gear to a low gear. While driving 60 miles an hour on the expressway my F150 went from six gear to first gear with no warning locking my rear wheels causing my speed to drastically or abruptly be lower almost causing several other vehicles to crash into the back of my pick up. Vehicle stays on gear sometimes first third or fifth gear with no warning switching back-and-forth. While making a stop at 0 mph vehicle stays at a high gear for example he could stay at third gear or fifth gear so they takeoff will be in third or fifth gear not in first gear . Also losing speedometer reading. This has happened multiple times while driving at low speed or high speed. I am concerned that this could cause accidents in the roads. Ford motor company corporate advised me that is an auto pocket fix sensor customer satisfaction program has expired for my vehicle. I never received notification of this issue while on my truck was within warranty. Ford Motor Company stated that they extended their coverage until 10,000 miles or 150,000 miles whichever comes first. My vehicle has 165,000 miles and he’s 10 years old. I don’t believe this is a normal Tear and water failure. This is a manufactures defective part that has happened in thousands of vehicles is not an isolated incident.
275/60/20 tire size. Driving home the other night started noticing my truck felt wobbly. Thought it was just the road until the truck started violently shaking at around 60mph. VIOLENTLY shaking. Pulled off immediately and looked at the front, sides, rear end, etc. Checked the tires, rear passenger side was stolen in 1 spot, and around that spot in a very isolated area the tire was completely bald and had a large lump in it. Other 3 tires seem ok right now. Contacted manufacturer who directed me to fill out a form on their website to "try for a replacement.". Can't find receipts from purchase so that's no good. Took to local mechanic/tire shop who stated that the "tread separated from the tire.". Separation is approximately 1 foot long and 2/3 of the tire width. Bald spot runs along this lump/separation.
Lug nut for wheel have swelled, unable to remove them with correct socket. Will need to replace all OEM lug nuts
Car was showing near empty but won’t be able to add more fuel.
Brake Failure: The brake Vacuum Boost pump is failing which causes a loss of power assist brakes. This is a massive safety issue and can cause serious accidents. Oddly Fors no longer manufactures the Bracket to be able to replace the pump and there is no aftermarket alternative. My Dealer tells me their notes from ford say obtains from aftermarket but I have scoured the internet and nobody makes the bracket. IT's a terrible design and a huge safety issue that should be recalled completely . Ford watts to charge over $900 to fix it but cant even get the parts as described above. Transmission Lead Rail: Recently had the Transmission Lead rail fail whcih casued sudden downshiting at highway speeds and the shift indicator to not illuinate. THis again is a massive safetey issue that Ford issued sevral TSB on but never recalled. This almost got me killed on thehighway a few times. They charged me over $1500 to replace the LEAD rail when again this defcetive design and craftsmenship that is a massive safetey issue and should be fully recalled. Engine Stutter: My truck has almost always stuttered anytime you wne tover hal throtle, There are sveral TSB on this but FORD has not stepped up and taken care o fht eissue via recall. Apprnetly moisture build up in the inercooler and gets sucked into the intake due to poor design. Timing Chain Stretch: I now have Timing chain stretch, this also seems ot be quite common due to poor design. Rear Door Failure: I can no longer open my rear half door due to failure of internal plastic door components. You can research any o fhtese issues and find that htey are very common pronlems in F150 and other Ford vehicles due to their negligence in design and engineering and some are huge safetey issues that FORD has somehow been alloweed to ignore or issue insufficinet TSB instead of Recall.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at speeds above 50 MPH, the vehicle had experienced sudden transmission down shifting. Eventually the transmission failure occurred in all gears and the vehicle would not properly accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact indicated that the vehicle had previously been serviced under the NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (Power Train). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 130,000.
In 2019, my power steering assist fault/service advance trac came on as i lost power steering... It's recalled on my year and model, but not my vin. Replaced the rack and pinion for the electronic power assist steering (EPAS) in September of 2019. Last week, so April 18,'22, my steering started getting stiff and binding. Last night, April 25,22, my power steering failed completely again. Ford refused to acknowledge it was the exact issue last time and it's extremely scary driving without power steering, esp when you don't know if it's going to go out while driving! This is a known problem and has not been addressed, outside the select vins.
My 2012 Ford F-150 has 98000 miles on it right now. Right about when it reached 90000 miles on it, it started having this loud rattling sound during startups, coming from the engine compartment. Everywhere I looked, it stated it was a “timing chain” issue. I took it to 2 separate Ford dealerships, each numerous times, and neither would fix the issue, apparently because the issue did happened at the dealership. Note, the truck was still on the warranty at the time. Now, 8000 miles later, the issue has gotten worse. The noise is getting louder and last for almost 3-5 seconds. I don’t know what to do. I don’t feel I have to put out of my pocket to fix this problem.
AFTER SERVICE ON 04/12/2022, MY RECEIPT UNDER COMMENTS SAID,"REP LUG NUTS". THAT'S ALL. 44,286 MILES AT THAT TIME. I TOOK F-150 FOR OIL CHANGE & TIRE ROTATION AGAIN ON 2/22/2023, WITH 47,882 MILES ON TRUCK. SERVICE RECEIPT SAID THEY DID NOT ROTATE TIRES. I ASKED WHY, AND I WAS TOLD "BECAUSE LUG NUTS ARE WORN". I TOLD SERVICE MANAGER THAT YOU GUYS ARE THE ONLY ONES TO HAVE EVER REMOVED THE LUG NUTS, WHY ARE THEY BAD?" HE REPLIED, "BETWEEN YOU AND ME, FORD USED CHEAP LUG NUTS"......SO, ONLY 47,882 MILES ON MY TRUCK, LUG NUT REMOVAL ONLY DONE BY FORD, AND i HAVE TO REPLACE LUG NUTS. PLUS, THEY STILL CHARGED ME FULL PRICE FOR MY SERVICE OF OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. FORD SHOULD REPLACE THE LUG NUTS AND ROTATE MY TIRES FOR FREE.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted into first gear. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.
Vacuum pump is bad again. This was previously recalled. The part has failed now for the third time. Only once was I reimbursed due to recall, but it has since failed twice more. Currently at 98,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle downshifted to a lower gear and with the engine revving. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The failure had been ongoing. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The contact researched the failure and related it to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V248000 (Power Train). The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.
My truck when driving will shift into 1st gear temporarily until the truck is turned off. Check engine light comes on with p0721 code.
There was frost on the rear window. While the car was in park and warming up I turned on the rear defroster. I started to smell a burning smell. There was a loud bang and back left window panel completely shattered. No one was injured thankfully, but if the glass would have blown out and we had our baby or passengers in the back there could have been injury. I am not only concerned about the glass shattering, but the fact that there was a burning smell. I have found several forums where people report the same issue across many years of F150s (2010-2019). Defroster is turned on and the back window shatters. I contacted Ford and they will not do anything because the vehicle is out of the warranty period. Sounds like there is something faulty that they need to fix or issue a recall. I reached out to my insurance company and after I get a few quotes I may file a claim depending on the replacement cost and my deductible amount. Only other "symptom" was the smell of burning right before the glass shattered.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle unintendedly downshifted upon the depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel during the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (Power Train) which she linked to the failure. The dealer was contacted about the failure and the contact was informed that there were no open recalls on the VIN. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.
I was told at the dealership they would not do tire rotation because the lug nuts were swollen all 24 needed to be replaced. I have read this is a common problem. Looks like ford should do something about this problem.
Transmission shifts from fourth gear to first gear by itself.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the brakes failed to function as needed at the initial start-up of the vehicle. After shifting to neutral(N) and waiting for a while, the brakes would function as needed. The contact stated that the previous owner had stated that the vehicle was included in a previous recall for the brake module. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer by the contact nor had the vehicle been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
On multiple occasions, driving at highways speeds, the vehicle with go from 6th gear to 1st or 3rd gear, causing a lock up of the tires skidding till the engine speed slows to match transmission gear. Both times there have been vehicle behind me and have had to swerve to avoid. The first time it happened in 2019/05 and a PCM recalibration was done at a dealership, and I was not aware that there was a recall available for this specific problem, replacing the lead frame in transmission. Now that its out of the recall date that was issued by ford, it is now showing the exact same issues, 2022/01/30. After every time it happens, a warning lamp has not signaled on, and no error code results. I've talk to multiple dealerships and ford customer relations, and will not issue the recall.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while her son was driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted and the driver was able to pull over safely off the highway. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
My truck has been experiencing sudden downshifting. I took it to the dealership in June of 2021 and mentioned the CSB 19N01, they said because there was no codes stored that were related to this problem they couldnt replace the leadframe, but said they would reprogram the PCM ,this did nothing .Yesterday my transmission slammed really hard and check engine light came on. Code P0501 (VSS vehicle speed sensor) Truck was built in 5/2012 which means it is still within the CSB guideline of 10 years 150000 miles. Just because the error code isnt the one that is on the checklist that they use to determine if it qualifies for the CSB doesnt mean the problem isnt there. I have about 3 months before my 10 year extension is up, This needs to be repaired asap. Thank you
My wife had the steering lock up on her tonight and made her pull into oncoming traffic, head on. She was able to stop the truck in the oncoming traffic lane, narrowly missing being hit head on. The steering gave her no warning, and just locked on her when she wad attempting to veer into a turn lane. The truck immediately jumped a curb divider, landing her into on coming traffic on one of the busiest streets in town. Quick thinking of switching on the hazards and praying, is all that kept her safe. The steering on this 2012 Ford F150 ecoboost has become increasingly worse over the last 3 weeks. Started with the advance track light going off every time we turned left, and has now escalated to this...almost killing my wife. I know now, after doing extensive research that this is actually fairly common in these trucks. 2011-2014 seem to be the problem trucks. A Bulletin was finally made for the 2011 models. I think it's safe to say that the 2012, 2013 and 2014s should also be put on that list. There are countless people having a steering rack issue with these trucks. And when this issue comes to a head, it's usually when you are driving, and lose all control, because of the electronic steering mechanism.
3.5L ecoboost timing chain failure at only 58,000 miles (code P0016 possible turbo problems TBD Front suspension springs are broken. All of these are common threads on many forums. Ford should be held accountable even though mine is 10 years old, the mileage is the issue. FWIW, they completely redesigned the engine a few years later, but never notified anyone to watch out for these common problems or offer a recall
Smacked a gard rail on the front, spun around and smacked the driver rear end no air bags deployed. 55 miles per hour
I began to hear timing chain rattle upon cold start up around 100000miles. I had the motor replaced at 122,000miles and both turbos per dealer and extended warranty recommendation. Now after strictly following oil change intervals over the last 28,000miles I am in the same boat. I have horrible chain rattle upon cold engine crank on a new motor.
I turned on the rear defrost and my rear window exploded on the passenger side.
I have a 2012 F-150 that has a recall under 16N02, it has happened more and more frequently where the transmission will die and go into a sort of "limp mode" and will not shift out of first gear. Will show a wrench and engine codes on the instrument cluster. I have now taken it into my local ford dealership where they said they cannot find any codes nor will they fix the said recall unless the transmission actually fails. I talked to a service tech and manager and they both told me that there was nothing they can do and of course my warranty and recall warranty ends December 31st. They told me at first on the phone that they wouldn't cover it anyways for the simple fact that they couldn't get me in till February and my warranty would be over by that point. I made a big enough fuss and they allowed me to bring it today only to be told there was nothing they could do and I was told to leave with my truck. I find this very hard to believe and am at a loss of words.
