NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Ford F-150. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Transmission constantly shifts erratically. When this happens, the transmission gets stuck between 3rd and 5th gears and sometimes only stays in 5th gear, no matter how fast the truck is going or even if it is not moving. About half the time when this happens it causes a rough "jerk" and could cause loss of control. If you must stop at a stop sign or stop light when this happens then you're impeding traffic just trying to get back up to speed after your stop, which could lead to an accident. This also causes the check engine light to come on.
Noticeably rough transitions between gears, particularly in the 3-4 and 4-5 shift ranges. sometimes a jerking sensation before shifting gears, not consistent. took vehicle to transmission shop. they found nothing mechanically wrong with transmission.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift out of the drive as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the speed sensor in the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that a software update was performed for the rear-view camera. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V444000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 140,000.
Sunroof was replaced under warranty due to track being broken. Now the sunroof is leaking and the shade will not open. There has been several recalls for sunroof issues. Dealership says my vin is not included. This seems to me to be a recall issue for safety. If the sunroof is broken it could cave in or fly off. Especially since it is leaking and won’t open and cannot see the problem. Dealership wants to charge me over $200 just to look at it. This is unacceptable.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his son was driving 60 MPH on the highway, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted into second gear while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that an unknown warning light had illuminated. The accelerator pedal was depressed again however, the vehicle remained in first gear. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the OSS sensor on the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
2015 Ford F150 XLT 2.7L, 6 speed auto, Crew CAB, short bed. Yes, you can inspect. Going down highway around 45-50 MPH, without warning or warning indicators, transmission suddenly downshifted, rear wheels locked momentarily, RPM's ran up high and vehicle slowed down abruptly in the middle of traffic. Wrench light on dash appeared and disappeared. About 5 minutes later driving on freeway, transmission would not automatically shift up to the next gear, stayed in a low gear for a minute, then finally shifted up. Vehicle is currently at Ford getting inspected. Did not drive the vehicle since the incident on 3-29-24, except to go to the Ford dealer.
My truck downshifted into 2nd gear after i was in 6th gear, now my transmission is slipping into 4th gear. But when i press the accelerator a little harder it’ll shift better but it’s not practical in a city
I was driving at around 45mph and my truck suddenly downshifted automatically and almost brought me to a complete stop. It finally shifted back up and I was able to return to the proper speed. If this would have happened at higher speeds I could have been in an accident. Event at 45mph, had I not had my seatbelt on it would have thrown me into the steering wheel.
Truck while turning right or forward will for no reason goes into lost traction(dry road) and truck downshifts and loses power. Very dangerous as there is no warning and potentially can be hit from behind since no brake lights are engaged. Recently read article that other trucks of this year and make are having same issue. I have taken into shop and awaiting what is the problem.
I have had the gasket for the oil pan fix two times. It is leaking again and told by ford that it will happen again. It is 1200 to have it fixed plus they have to keep it for a few days to make sure the seal is dry. If you do not check the oil all the time it could be low and lock up. I know other people that have had this problem. It is on the 2.7 Eco boost.
The transmission will down shift without warning. It has occurred 4 times in the last 60 days. Near miss accident in one occasion.
Transmission malfunction by sudden downshifting to first gear at highway speeds. This caused my rear wheels to lock up and skid as if I had slammed on the brakes and temporary lose control of the vehicle, which is extremely dangerous on the highway. It has occurred multiple times. There were no warning lights the first several times this happened. They check engine light did come on after about the 6th time it occurred.
The vehicle has downshifted to a low gear several times since I’ve owned it new in 2015. Usually has happened when starting to slow down to exit the highway. Driver and passengers were jarred and thrown forward unexpectedly. Driver was startled. Backend of truck swayed. Dealer service has been told over the years. They said they were aware but there were NO RECALLS and Ford didn’t have a FIX as of yet. They said it was COMOUTER RELATED causing the transmission to downshift. I also said sometimes it takes longer than normal to shift from the start position they claimed they were waiting for a fix from FORD. Dealer inspected. No warning lamps or messages appear on the dash as a warning. They said they would inform me of any fixes for the problem as they came down from the manufacturer.
A few years back, I was having an issue with my truck shifting hard. I actually took it to a friend's shop and he repaired it, for about $1600. They changed a "chip" in it. The vehicle was never inspected by Ford, or the police, or my insurance company. The problem was identified by the repair shop and taken care of, or so I thought. The issue seemed fixed for a while but within the last year the issue has begun again. The transmission will not shift at times. It seems stuck, which causes the engine to rev very high. I worry about causing lasting damage to the engine as a result of the transmission sticking.
While driving at random times trans will go into a limp mode and have only 3 gear speeds. Sometimes either a wrench symbol will come up or a check engine light will come one. When this happens it’ll stay in a limp mode til ignition is cycled for it to reset. Also while at low speeds it has dropped me from 4th gear to 1st.
Full transmission failure after switching to 4 high on snowy highway. Speed during shift was about 50 mph. We were left stranded on a busy highway outside of Steamboat Springs, CO in wintry conditions for almost 2 hours while waiting for roadside assistance. Vehicle was towed to Phil Long Ford in Littleton, CO. There was no warning on the dashboard until the “wrench” light went on as the truck lost power. The mileage on the vehicle at the time of incident was 100,368. Response from Ford was that the vehicle was beyond the warranty period. I was given a repair estimate of $9701.90 plus an inspection bill of $250.00. The truck has been towed to an independent garage for a new transmission. I have not been given an explanation for the transmission failure as yet. ( date of event: [XXX]) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I am experiencing dangerous shifting failures with my 2015 Ford F-150 equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission. My truck intermittently fails to shift properly, holds onto gears too long, or refuses to shift into 6th gear. It also enters fail-safe mode, displaying a wrench icon on the dashboard. Restarting the vehicle temporarily resolves the issue, but it keeps coming back. The truck recently threw diagnostic trouble codes P0720 and P0722, which are related to the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor, a known failure point in the 6R80 transmission lead frame. Ford previously recalled 2011-2013 F-150s (Recall #19V-075, Ford Recall 19S07) for this exact issue because it can cause a catastrophic downshift from 6th gear to 1st at highway speeds, leading to loss of control. However, 2015 models were not included in the recall, despite using the same transmission and lead frame. I am concerned that Ford’s recall did not go far enough and that my 2015 F-150 should be included due to the identical symptoms and part failure. This is a serious safety hazard, as a sudden downshift at highway speeds could cause loss of control, an accident, or even fatalities. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this issue and expand the recall to include 2015 F-150s with the same 6R80 transmission and defective lead frame.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the gear shifter independently shifted out of the intended position. The check engine warning light was illuminated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed, and determined that the transmission range sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V444000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000.
brakes failed all fluid leaked out
It’s been several times that I’ll be driving, sometimes on residential roads and once getting onto the highway. The transmission will suddenly drop down into first gear and I’ll have to limp off the side of the road until I’m going slow enough to be in first gear, then I can go again. Or I’ll lose 1,2 and 6th gears so I’ll have to pull over, turn the truck off and start it again. Then I’ll have gears 1-6 again.
The transmission is a safety issue and is available for inspection. The six speed automatic has a 5th to 4th downshift that is regularly rough and can be jarring at times. A few weeks ago on my way home from work while driving 30 mph around a small bend the truck shifted from 4th to 2nd on its own and bucked so hard that it scared me and brought my hands off the steering wheel and made my back sore for the next day. This is a blind bend because of the shrubbery in the front yard at the bend and it is also at the beginning of a school zone. This could've been a worse situation if there would've been a car or school bus going in the opposite direction. This was certainly the worst one yet but there have been similar situations where the truck jarringly shifted from 4th to 3rd on its own. The problem has not been reproduced, confirmed or inspected as mentioned above. I have read multiple stories stating very similar or even the same occurrences on the forums. The lead frame in the transmission seems to be the leading cause for this issue. Others have been to the dealer, had the computer reflashed and were told it just needs to relearn their driving, only to have the issue return. After seeing these stories and now reading about the investigation into the issue I've been holding off to see what happens as I do not want to waste time and money to not have the issue fixed. There were not any warning lamps, etc before or after this issue. I have noticed that when the jarring shifts occur the small area of the cluster that shows gears one through six goes black and remains that way until manually pressing the button on the shifter to make the image reappear. To this point these shifting issues almost always occur at low speeds while gently resting my foot on the gas to keep a steady speed. It feels as though the transmission shifts into fifth too early, the rpms slowly lower and then it downshifts to fourth in a jarring manner.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to third gear almost causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that prior to the failure the vehicle was hesitating while depressing the accelerator pedal. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V444000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
The sliding rear window assembly which is attached with 4 adhesive tape strips have come loose. The sliding window comes out of the frame and could become airborne if hit from the rear or in a front end collision. It is a very poor way to attach a sliding rear window and the failure rate is high. The bad part of this is most people are probably not aware of the problem other than the window frame will rattle sometimes when your on a bumpy road. It is a poor design and could be dangerous in any collision. The body and glass repair shops are aware of the problem on the rear windows of Ford pickups. This should be fixed with a recall before someone dies from the window becoming airborne in a crash
I have owned my 2015 F150 SPORT 2.7 ECO BOOST since it was new, and occasionally it downshift's mainly in town from 5th gear to 1st gear. I thought this was my fault until I heard about the safety concern. I have mentioned it to ford, but was told that downshift's were normal? Anyway I an now concerned this could happen on the interstate which I don't drive on regularly. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Broken exhaust bolt on passenger manifold. Exhaust leak... Felt as though Carbon monoxide gas was entering cabin portion of truck. Smelling of exhaust in cabin of vehicle. Made wife and kids nauseated and lightheaded. Did research and found out that ford had a poorly designed manifolds and didn't utilize all exhaust bolts. In turn caused the #8 bolt to snap and manifold to warp and release exhaust fumes
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal screeching sound while accelerating. There was smoke coming from the passenger's side engine. No warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The contact related the failure to the exhaust manifold; however, the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
Truck will on occasion downshift into a low gear out of nowhere and feels like the rear axle is going to rip out of the truck.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH or less while in 5th or 6th gear, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to 1st gear. The “WRENCH” warning light was illuminated. The contact restarted the vehicle to turn off the warning light. The contact called a certified Ford mechanic and was informed that the lead frame and valve body had failed. The mechanic stated that the valve body, lead frame, and sensor needed to be replaced. The mechanic also informed the contact that it was a common issue with the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was made aware that the failure was related to NHTSA Open Investigation Number: EA26001 (Power Train). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for a routine oil change, the mechanic discovered that engine oil was leaking from the oil pan. The contact was informed that the oil pan needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 102,000.
Drive mode lights on dash (P,R,N,D,M,2,1) start alternating while driving then vehicle will not stay engaged in any drive mode, vehicle appears to go into limp mode with no drive mode lit on dashboard. This is extremely dangerous. Vehicle codes found are P0706 and P0707. Ford case number is [XXX]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver side Door latch won’t latch when cold- below freezing temperatures. The door stays frozen in the open position and is unable to latch closed Stays open when driving
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the rearview camera displayed a distorted image while the vehicle was in reverse(R). The contact stated that the failure obstructed the driver's visibility, which prevented the driver from safely operating the vehicle. In addition, the screen had turned black, but the alarm beeped as designed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.
It's the same issue as Recall Notice 22S02/NHTSA Recall 22v011. The replacement part is MR3Z-7583-A 1X ($2-$5 part with 30 second install), but they do not show it under parts for my truck, they would prefer to sell me the whole brake pedal assembly ($50+ part and labor probably diagnosis charge in addition to part replacement). The part becomes brittle and breaks. This caused dead battery, 5 hours from home, due to lights staying on, allowed me to start and put truck into gear without touching the brake, lost acceleration between 45 & 50 mph, cruise control would not turn on and message presents that hill assist is not available.
The vehicle will randomly shift into 1st or 2nd gear no matter what speed you are traveling. This causes a sudden slam of vehicle and slows town rapidly even causing the tires to skid. This feels extremely unsafe. There aren’t any recalls on my year and model specifically, however this is a very known issue with Ford 6-speed automatic transmissions. There is a safety recall on 2011-2013 Ford F150 models for the same issues I am having with my 2015 models. Occasionally the engine light will appear and the code reads transmission range sensor circuit. Also, occasionally the vehicle won’t start and the “see service manual” message will appear.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that in reverse, the rearview camera failed to display an image of the rear of the vehicle as intended. The message "Caution - Camera Unavailable - Please Contact Dealer" was displayed. The contact stated that the screen displayed a small image of the vehicle with the surrounding sensors' warnings displayed. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to an undisclosed recall; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
First time my transmission downshifted to 1st gear coming to a stop at approximately 35mph while gently braking. The leadframe turned out to be defective. Approximately 60k miles later the same symptom and same failure. The leadframe was replaced and that solved the problem.
Unknown my truck at 65 to 69 shakes crazy bad and everybody i talk to says theirs does as well and Walter's Ford in pikeville ky has no clue y it is doing it therefore they couldn't fix it and it it's dangerous to drive
This vehicle started having periods of time that felt and sounded like you were running over rumble strips. This started happening at 38,000 miles and it would happen every 30 seconds to 1 min when going a steady speed. Also when shifting into different gears. Took it to a private mechanic and had the transmission fluid and filter changed which seemed to help a little. Then gradually started coming back more and more again. At 40,000 mi we decided to take it to the Ford dealership in portage, Wisconsin. They diagnosed the issue as a torque converter and torque converter solenoid. All together. This will be costing us $5,000. Upon looking up potential recalls for this problem, I noticed many F150 2015's with the same problem that were included in a recall. For some reason this vehicle is not but obviously should be. I contacted Ford and they told me to discuss the situation with the dealership that is doing the repair on the truck. Ford dealership told me to contact the Ford office. After getting bounced back and forth, I just decided to file this claim with you. I don't know what the next steps could be.
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact discovered a mileage discrepancy after the purchase. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 85,000. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for a trade-in, and it was later discovered that the mileage on the title was 185,000. Upon further investigation, the contact found out that Sheridan Motors had bought the vehicle from the original owner and that the dealer was the one who had rolled back the odometer. The contact contacted the Department of Transportation Bureau of Investigation and Identity Protection.
I was driving down the highway then my vehicle randomly dropped down to gear 2 from 6 and went from 65mph to 30 and redlined my vehicle. It was extremely scary and took it to the shop immediately and then they replaced my lead frame and cost me $2,000. I definitely believe it has damaged my transmission and won’t last as long now.
Lead frame failure in transmission. Causing vehicle to be inoperable and towed to dealer. Very expensive repair. Contacted Ford directly due to large reports online of failure and previous years being covered. Ford declined to do anything.
The engine while operating at normal speed loses power to a rough idle and is remedied by putting the vehicle in park and restarting the engine. The engine never fails to start after restarting, but could fail at any moment, short or long term.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the front driver’s side door failed to unlock while using the key fob or the key. The contact stated that while inside the vehicle, the symbol showing that the door was ajar was displayed. The contact had to manipulate the door lock and click the fob several times to secure the door lock. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the door locking mechanism had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer notified the contact of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 17V331000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages) and 17V652000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000.
I was driving down a mountain road and the truck downshifted. At a speed of 70 mile an hour. Very scary for sure.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle started to leak coolant. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the engine started to overheat. The temperature gauge registered a high temperature. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.
I cold started the engine from inside the house and when I opened the back passenger door there was smoke coming from behind the rear seat in the back area. I couldn’t get to where the smoke was coming from but from the smell it was wire related. I quickly went around to the driver side and turned on the truck and quickly turned it off. About 10-30 minutes later the ring camera showed the rear window of my truck shatter due to this incident in which I was informed that the rear auto defrost turns on due to a malfunction. I put a claim through my insurance and got the window fixed but I am still worried that this issue may happen again. I hope that by informing you of this situation going forward you can help others including myself be aware of this problem and how we can fix it. Thank you for your time and I like to say I love ford trucks and plan on staying a loyal customer.
