Truck idles rough and stalls at idle. Truck must be placed in park, restarted, and then placed in drive. This creates a very dangerous situation in start and stop traffic, starting and stopping at intersections, etc. I’m worried about the truck staling instead of paying attention to the surroundings. Based on my searches this is a very common problem that must be fixed before people are injured or possibly killed.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, there was an abnormal chattering sound coming from the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold bolts, and exhaust manifold were warped. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.
The issues I have had with my 2016 Ford F150 appear to be related to the 6R80 transmission installed in the vehicle. I have experienced unexpected and unwarranted downshifting at highway speeds to lower gears causing the vehicle to decelerate significantly while in motion with traffic. This issue can then cause the vehicle to not start after pulling over to inspect the vehicle. This issue has been reproduced on at least five separate occasions over a two month period. I am attempting to seek repairs for this safety issue through an authorized Ford dealer and have been told there is a several month wait for transmission service due to the amount of other people having transmission issued as well.
When traveling at a higher rate of speed (30-60mph) the truck tries to downshift into a lower gear by itself. When this happens, the truck lurches back and forth and makes a grinding noise, the RPM will increase for the second or so that this is happening. This problem is very sporadic.
3.5 Turbo Engine developed a rattle noise on startup. I have 149,000 miles change oil every 4-5000 miles. And it has been inspected by a mechanic that the cam phasers are making the noise. Ford has recalled or warranty the 2017 and newer F150s . But nothing on the 2016 model. I would like to start a record of the other 2016 F150 owners with the same problem. I contacted Ford and They want me to pay out of pocket for this repair which can cost up to $3,000 dollars. I would like to know if you have had any other complaints on this issue. Thanks Barry M
While driving down XXX (XXX in Auburn Hills), a wrench light came on the dash in my truck and started experiencing acceleration issues. I also could no longer see that I was in Drive mode (vs P, R, N, etc.). After I got off the expressway and slowed down at the first light, I noticed it was hard to accelerate again and took some time to begin shifting thru the gears. Once I made it to my destination and turned off the truck, it would not restart, no engine turnover whatsoever. I managed to trick or reset the issue by shifting into neutral (still could not see that I was in Neutral because the transmission could tell where the shifter was at) and I restarting the truck in order to limp home. Truck did not start the next day. Had the vehicle towed to a dealership and the fix was the transmission "lead frame connector" was bad. I was told that there was a recall on this exact same issue on older model F150's but not my 2016. On top of that, I was just outside the "extended warranty" that I purchased when I bought the used truck in 2019. And I still had over 15,000 miles left of the extended warranty, but I had passed the end date first. Cost for fix was appr. $1100. 2016 Ford F150 w/ 5.0L V8 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver side door some times will not close and have to lock and unlock the door to get it to close, and transmission is making hard gear changes.....
Tailgate is corroding at the hinge assembly, due to aluminum body panel and steel hinges causing galvanic corrosion. Possible that the tailgate could fall off on the road from accidentally pressing automatic tailgate release on key fob if the hinge fails and/or in addition to a person getting hurt when opening the tailgate, or climbing in the truck bed, whie loading or unloading a heavy object should hinges fail. Ford engineering basically told me "oh well" and offered no help. I live in the rust belt. This has taken 7 years to show up.
On Sunday July 21st I was driving my F-150 when the check engine light came on. I took the car to an autoparts store for diagnostic check. The codes that came back are P0707 and P0706. On the drive home from the auto parts store the car slammed into first gear on a back road, then would not go back into gear when placed in park, then back in drive. I was able to turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle. At that time the vehicle did go back in to gear but was not behaving normally. There was also a wrench lamp that lit up on the dashboard at that time. According to ford this is what the wrench indicates "This light can be triggered whenever your onboard diagnostics II(OBD II) system detects a throttle control system or transmission-related problem". According to my mechanic these codes are the same codes associated with a recall that is already in place for transmission issues with the 2014 6 speed transmission, which is the same transmission I have in my vehicle. My mechanic states he as already replaced several transmission range sensor circuits on 2015 and 2016 models and they are the same issue that the 2014 is having. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, but I did speak to the ford dealership where I purchased the vehicle new. They advised me to complete this report which tells me that they are likely seeing the same thing as my mechanic is seeing.
The lead frame on my vehicle is faulty, and will randomly switch into manual mode (it's an automatic transmission) while driving on the highway. This causes it to downshift to low gears while I'm driving on the highway. I'm driving 65+ on the highway and suddenly the vehicle downshifts to 2nd gear and I have to slam on the brakes. The engine light only comes on when the issue happens then goes back off until it happens again. Ford dealership confirmed that this is related to the lead frame and suggested it be replaced. From what I've read online, this is such a common issue that replacement lead frames for this model year have been on back order for several years, yet no recall has been issued for this model year, only the previous generation. My vehicle is currently in the shop so I don't have a repair invoice yet.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his son was driving 45 MPH in sixth gear, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to first gear and the vehicle skidded. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V164000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the valve body was not operating as needed and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that DTC: P0706, P0707, P1702, and P1912 were retrieved. The vehicle was repaired. The contact mailed a letter to the manufacturer and filed a case, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 58,800.
I had my vehicle in for a state inspection at a Ford dealership. They told me they could not remove the rear wheels because the lug nuts were swollen. In order to remove the rear wheels the lug nuts will be destroyed. What happens if I get a flat tire? How will I get the tire off? I have to get a new set of lug nuts and have them available if I ever want to get the rear wheels off. This is nuts (excuse the pun)! Ford should replace these lug nuts not me.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The transmission lead frame failed. It was replaced by the mechanic. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The transmission suddenly shifted to a lower gear and locked up the rear tires. This suddenly decreased the speed while traveling in traffic. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The service center scanned the truck and recorded the error codes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The transmission shifted erratically and the gear indicator on the dash blinked. After the sudden downshift the check engine and see service manual light came on.
Back up camera failure the day after I bought the truck from a dealership. With the vehicle lifted in the rear and the blind spots it has mirrors only do so much before you have to open the door while backing up just to make sure it’s good enough or you aren’t sticking out while parked. It hasn’t been professionally inspected. No lights but it started as a black screen with green lines and eventually turned to a bright blue screen that is blinding at night when trying to back up.
When operating the turn signal and using the wipers on delay, I smelled a plastic like burning smell thinking it was the wiring in the controller arm. This happened several times and eventually the wiper runs 100% on the time delay with no way to turn off except by pulling the fuse. I can operate the normal speeds of the wipers when it rains if needed but I still get a smell sometimes. I have not had the issue looked at but will next week at an independent repair shop. I'm concerned maybe an electrical issue could cause a fire at some point in time.

See attached document for complaint.
I am experiencing the same shifting problems that caused the recall in the 2014 F150 trucks with the 6r80 transmission. Sudden downshifts, limp mode, etc.
Truck had defective lead frame assembly in transmission , caused wheels to lockup when downshifted to first while traveling at 65 mph. Ford says no recall, had to pay $1700 for transmission repair of lead frame , and every tire was flat spotted and had to be changed as well. And cost me $700 in towing fees.

Vehicle is exhibiting issues consistent with the recalled lead frame part on previous year models, despite my 2016 having the same transmission as they do. Truck will randomly downshift into first at slower speeds causing engine to rev very high and not want to shift into next gear. Often times it will get “stuck” in 3rd gear even when coming to a complete stop and leaving a stop in 3rd still. On one occasion the truck shuddered and began to decelerate even as the accelerator was being pressed on the highway causing a significant safety issue, I had to put in neutral and restart the truck while still driving to regain forward mobility of the vehicle. When these things occur typically a little gear wrench symbol will appear on the dash and on one occasion has raised a check engine light with code P0720.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the front driver’s and passenger’s side doors failed to open when needed. The contact stated that while attempting to remove the key fob from the ignition switch, there was approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the key could be removed from the ignition switch. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed up an incline, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted, prompting the contact to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway and turn the vehicle off. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The service transmission warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to diagnose the failure but determined there was a communication failure between the power train control module and the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V444000 (Power Train), but neither the VIN nor the model year was included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Transmission started shifting eratacely eventually went out in 2023 replaced late or early 2024, transmission still exhibiting same problems, biggest problem is not shifting out of 5th gear when coming to a stop.have to shut off truck to disable safe mode, doesn't always work.code is 720,721,723
The "service advance trac" light would come on and the vehicle would go into limp mode. Limp mode would last until the vehicle was turned off. This happened 4 times in all. Once in March and three times in June. It always occurred shortly after the initial start of the day. The vehicle is available for additional inspection if and when needed. When the vehicle goes into limp mode, a loss of power occurs. This is a safety concern as moving through intersections from a complete stop is unusually slow and lagging. The Ford dealership did not find the root cause during initial inspection, which resulted in a bad diagnosis and an unneeded repair. The second dealership visit, 3 months after the initial, resulted in finding a chafed wiring harness. It had rubbed against a frame rail near the radiator. The chafing not only rubbed through the harness insulation, but also the insulation on some of the wires inside of the large harness/bundle of wires. The warning lights first appeared in March of 2024 when the unneeded repair was performed. Three months later, in June of 2024, the chafed wiring harness was discovered and repaired by a Ford dealer in Apple Valley, MN. I will do my best to provide the dealer video of the issue as well as the two invoices associated with the repairs. Within the invoices there are excellent notes left by the technicians that describe their findings. With the June invoice resulting in repairing the root cause. I cannot upload the video, so I posted it to YouTube. The chafed wires and rubbing on the frame rail can be seen near the end of this 95 second video: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Nothing wrong
On [XXX] I was pulling a trailer with a 1981 F150 home from Louisville, KY. When we enter onto the Interstate System and reached cruising speed by transmission indicator started jumping around switch between gear and downshifted very hard into first gear while I was navigating traffic - semi trailers and passenger vehicles around us. The truck then went into what I would call limp mood for several miles and we were unable to maintain highway speeds with nowhere to exit the interstate there in Louisville area. Eventually the truck regained normal power and we continued our journey back home to the St. Louis Missouri area. We had to stop several time out of fear to check engine oil, transmission fluid and engine temperature out of precautions. We were very stressed after this hard downshift that almost resulted in striking other vehicles on the interstate from the downshifting and rapid decrease in speed on the interstate. No warning light came on just the crazy shift indicator lights going haywire. The next day on [XXX] I was going to refuel and the transmission downshift again on me from 6 gear to first without warning. I took and dropped it off at a local shop for inspection and fixing. The problem was finally diagnosed as the transmission frame module and had to be replaced at a cost of over $900. I had to take it to another local shop here in the St. Louis Area who specializes in Transmission Repairs because my truck was out of warranty, CP Transmissions and Performance replaced the Frame Modular and told us to keep monitoring the status of recalls, but currently my 2016 did not fall under any. I am writing you now as I've seen several article indicating that my year has been noted as having this issue. I have the repair receipt on file and can share that information if needed. On the road when it occurred from Louisville, to St. Louis, not warning light were present. Only after the second occurrence did I finally get a warning light. The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at approximately 70 MPH, the sunroof independently closed and opened. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the sunroof latch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.
My truck is downshifting to 1st gear while driving. If I happen to be in cruise control the truck will just coast and the dash display will flicker, then go back to 6th gear. If I give it gas, then it will almost come to an abrupt stop or if I am out of cruise, it will come rev up and almost come to a stop. I am afraid to drive it because it may cause me to get rear ended. This has happened several times usually in the same section of the road but not limited to it.
The contact owned a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly shifted into second gear. A local dealer was contacted. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
I was driving around 70 mhp and my truck shifted from 6th to 4th and back to sixth... I had to take it to the shop and it was a bad output shaft sensor code p0720. This new recall about the 2014s ford f150 sounded to similar to what my truck did.. I am hoping my truck is fixed and not another issue that is going to get me into a wreck.
The transmission had to be replaced. I knew something was wrong because the truck was lunging. I took it to the garage and the mechanic said not to worry because everything looked great. I was pulling down a tree and the transmission stopped working. I had to get the transmission replaced.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and accelerating, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to a local dealer to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The dealer replaced the throttle control and the PCM; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission gear indicator was no longer illuminated on drive(D). The transmission then unexpectedly downshifted. The "See Manual" message was displayed, and the transmission warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road; however, the vehicle failed to restart immediately. After several attempts, the vehicle was able to restart, and the contact drove to the residence. The failure recurred. An independent mechanic jumpstarted the vehicle at the residence, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The independent mechanic determined that the transmission range sensor circuit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (Power Train); however, neither the VIN nor the model year was included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact was advised to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 83,662.
In several different cases I was driving around 40-45 mph and when I went to slow down and turn, the transmission downshifted way to early to 1st or 2nd gear. No warning lights came on in any of the incidents.
So I was driving my 2016 Ford F150 3.5L v6 twin turbo today. I turned a corner and punched the accelerator to get up to speed and it felt like I ran into a brick wall and the truck began chiming and I lost all power. I mean I had *zero* power - I pushed the gas pedal down and nothing at all happened. The warnings were: "Service AdvanceTrac System" "Hill Descent Control Fault" "Collision Warning Not Available" "Hill Start Assist Not Available" There was an orange wrench on the dash, the air bag light was on, the traction control light was on. The truck was idling super rough the whole truck was shaking. I shut the truck off - gave it a second and started it back up and Everything disappeared. It started happening maybe once every six months and now it’s multiple times a day. Today, i was in the middle of an intersection when it happened and barely made it to the side of the road.
