WHILE DRIVING WOULD STEP ON BRAKE PEDAL AND BRAKES WOULD MALFUNCTION AT TIME OF OPERATION, HAD TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALER AND THEY REPLACED ROTORS FIVE TIMES *AK THE BRAKES SQUEAK OFTEN, BOTH THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO WARPING, THE VEHICLE HAS 31,800 MILES. *YD
FRONT DISC BRAKES - EXCESSIVE SQUEAL UPON BRAKING...TOOK CAR TO DEALER. DETERMINED FRONT BRAKE PADS & ROTORS NEEDED REPLACEMENT. ONLY 16000 MILES ON CAR! ALSO, REAR DRUM BRAKES MAKE SQUEALING NOISE AS WELL. DEALER REPLACED THEM AND TURNED DRUMS. STILL SQUEALS. ALSO, EMERGENCY BRAKE LEVER HAS EXCESSIVE TRAVEL AND POOR BRAKE HOLDING CAPACITY. TOOK BACK TO DEARLER TWICE, STILL POOR EMERGENCY BRAKE FUNCTION. POWER STEERING ASSIST SUDDENLY FAILED WHEN STARTED CAR COLD. STEERING WAS DIFFICULT AND SLOW UNTIL CAR WARMED UP. HAPPENED FOR SEVERAL DAY UNTIL TOOK TO DEARLER. SAID P.S. PUMP WAS BAD AND REPLACED IT.*AK

2000 FORD FOCUS ONLY WITH 23500 MILES, MAINLY HIGHWAY. BRAKES STARTED MAKING GRINDING NOISE, SHOP REPLACED FRONT BRAKES, PADS AND ROTORS. CAR STILL MAKING GRINDING NOISE. ONE WEEK AFTER REPLACING FRONT BRAKES, SHOP REPLACE REAR DRUM BRAKES. BRAKES ARE STILL MAKING GRINDING NOISE. HAVE HAD BRAKES INSPECTED AND REINSPECTED BUT MECHANICS STATES NO PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES. GENERAL COMMENTS FROM MECHANICS ARE THAT THE FORD FOCUS BRAKES ARE BAD, WEAK AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACING MORE THAN THE AVERAGE AUTOMOBILES IN THE MARKET. *AK

CONSUMER WAS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME ENTERING KEY INTO IGNITION. MECHANIC STATED THAT VEHICLE HAD A LOCK SWITCH THAT HAD MALFUNCTIONED. *AK CONSUMER CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS CONDITION WAS A FAMILIAR ONE WITH THE FORD FOCUS AND THAT THE ENGINEERS HAVE NOT RECEIVED ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO CONSIDER THE PROBLEM A RECALL. DEALER REPLACED IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER AND OFFERED TO PAY 60% OF COST. *TT
ENGINE STALLED WHEN MAKING A CLOCKWISE HAIRPIN TURN (FREEWAY TRANSITION) WITH APPROX. 1/4 TANK OF GAS. *AK

WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE, AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP COMPLETELY. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND DROVE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED THEM THREE TIMES. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK

I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY OF 2002. JUST 2 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING, CAR SHUT DOWN AND LOCKED UP. HAD TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL RECALLS TO BE FIXED. THERE WAS NO COST FOR THAT WORK. THEN IN ABOUT APRIL OF 2002 THE BUTTON THAT TURNS THE AIR ON AND OFF MESSED UP AND THE AIR WOULD NOT WORK. WE WENT TO FORD AND SINCE I HAD NO WARRANTY, I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, THEY QUOTED ME AT $170.00 TO REPAIR THIS SO I ORDER THE PART FOR 12.00 AND FIXED IT MYSELF. THEN 11-4-02 I WENT TO GET INTO MY CAR AND START IT, AND ONCE AGAIN IT WOULD NOT START. WE HAD IT TOWED AGAIN, CAUSING US TO PAY FOR A RENTAL AND TOWING FEES. THE CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR 2 DAYS AND THEY SAID THAT THE GROUND WIRES WERE SHORTING OUT????AND THEY SAID IT NEEDED SEVERAL OTHER THINGS ALSO, BUT THEY ARE YET TO GET FIXED DUE TO FINANCIAL REASONS. I CANNOT STAND THIS CAR!!!
WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH VEHICLE HIT GRAVEL ON SIDE OF ROAD AND SLID INTO GUARDRAIL. DEALER DETERMINED LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS BROKEN.*AK
THIS STALLING WHILE DRIVING PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ON TWO OCCASIONS, BOTH TIMES AT LOW SPEED. ONCE WHILE MAKING A RIGHT 90DEG TURN AND ONCE WHILE SLOWLY ROLLING TO A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. THE SECONED TIME THE CAR WAS HARD TO RESTART.*AK

DRIVER'S AND FRONT PASSENGER'S SEATS: THE BOLSTER SUPPORT BARS (2 PER SEAT) ARE SPOT WELDED TO THE SEAT PAN. THE END OF THE SUPPORT BAR CLOSEST TO THE REAR OF THE SEAT PAN ON BOTH SEATS IS SHARP ENOUGH TO WEAR THRU THE SEAT COVERS AND BECOME COMPLETE EXPOSED TO THE BUTTOCKS OF THE PERSON IN THE SEAT. THE DRIVER'S SEAT HAS WOREN THRU FROM THE INSIDE OUT ALL THE WAY THRU THE SEAT COVER AND HAS CAUSED HOLES IN DRIVER'S PANTS. THIS SAME THING WILL HAPPEN TO THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT SINCE THE TWO ARE MADE THE SAME. THE DRIVER'S SEAT LEFT BOLTER SUPPORT BAR HAS ALSO BROKEN AWAY FROM THE SEAT PAN NEAR THE FRONT OF THE SEAT PAN WHERE IT WAS ATTACHED. I HAVE HAD THE SEAT COVER ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND FOAM REPLACED AND NOW ABOUT 8 MONTHS AFTER THE HOLES APPEARED AGAIN AND THE DEALER LOCAL TO ME - MILLENNIUM WILL NOT FIX IT UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY PERIOD OF THE CAR. THEY SAID THAT IT HAS BEEN FIXED TO MANY TIMES BEFORE. AT THEIR REQUEST I TOOK IT TO AN AUTO UPHOLSTERER AND THE COST TO FIX IT WOULD BE ABOUT $500. THE PROBLEM THO IS INHERENT IN THE SEAT DESIGN AND NOT FIXABLE FOR THE LONG TERM. IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT I COULD POTENTIALLY AND ESPECIALLY IN A FAST STOP OR ACCIDENT DRIVE THAT REAR END OF THE BOLSTER SUPPORT BAR INTO MY BUTTOCKS. ALSO THE FRONT END OF THE SAME BOLSTER BAR HAS BROKEN AWAY FROM THE WELD. FORD MAKES NO CLAIM TO THE FACT THAT WEIGHT IS AN ISSUE. I WIEGH 280 LBS AND AM 6'5" TALL. DUE TO MY SIZE AND SIZE OF MY BUTTOCKS I AM ALWAYS SITTING ON THE BOLSTER BARS AND NOT BETWEEN THEM. WHILE FORD WILL NOT ADMIT TO A WEIGHT AND SIZE LIMIT OF THE SEATS - I FEEL THAT IS AN ISSUE. LEAR CORP. WHO MAKES THE SEAT FOR FORD SAYS THAT THE SEAT IS DESIGNED FOR THE 90-95 PERCENTILE AND IS NOT DESIGNED TO ACCOMONDATE LARGER FOLKS. I AM AFRAID THAT THE BROKEN END OF THE BOLSTER SUPPORT BAR IN AN ACCIDENT OR FAST STOP MAY FIND IT'S WAY INTO MY LEFT THIGH.*AK
THE VEHICHLE LOCK WITH THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE WHEELS IN A LOCKED POSITION.THE VEHICLE THEN ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN,AND HIT A CURB.THE OTHER TIMES IT HAPPENED THE SAME WAY.THE CAR PULLING REAL FAST TO ONE SIDE,AND THE CAR WON'T STOP IT ACTUALLY ACCELERATES. *AK

DEALER PULLED OFF WHEEL AND WENT INTO THE IGNITION, AND FIXED A PART. *AK CONSUMER STATED THAT THE SECOND KEY WAS MADE AND THAT KEY WOULD NOT START THE VEHICLE, VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, DEALER SAID IT WAS A SECURITY LOCK AND THEY FIXED THE IGNITION. VEHICLE STALLED FOR THE THIRD TIME BUT CONSUMER MANAGED TO START THE VEHICLE. *YD
WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL CRACK TOO OFTEN. DEALER SAID THAT REASON FOR CRACKS WAS THE WEATHER THAT CAUSED. RUBBER TO CRACK BUT, THIS VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN AN INDOOR DRIVEWAY. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *AK
WHILE DRIVING IN THE DARK DASHBOARD AND REAR LIGHTS WILL GO OFF WITHOUT A PRIOR WARNING, AND HEADLIGHTS WILL DI. HAD TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALER AND THEY FOUND OUT THAT ELECTRICAL WIRING WAS CORRODED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *AK
CAR BURNED IN MY DRIVEWAY. WE JUST FOUND OUT IT CAME FROM UNDER THE DASHBOARD, A PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING(ELECTRICALLY)IN THE HEATING SYSTEM.
MY ORIGINAL COMPLAINT WAS FOR # 760238. THERE WAS A FIRE IN THAT CAR. IT IS LISTED IN YOUR DEFECT INVESTIGATIONS AS NO FIRE, BUT--THERE WAS. IT IS TERRIBLE THAT A BIG CORPORATION LIKE FORD CAN NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS ON THIS MATTER.

DEALERSHIP TREATED US LIKE CRIMINALS(MY WIFE AND I) THEY GAVE US A RENTAL, AND HARASSED US ABOUT THE RENTAL EVEN THOUGH BY MAINE LEMON LAWS, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE US WITH ONE. THEY THREATENED THE POLICE WITH US FOR THEFT OF THE RENTAL. I NOTICED ON YOUR WEB-SITE YESTERDAY THAT ONE DAY PRIOR TO OUR FIRE NHTSA STARTED AN INVESTIGATION PERTAINING TO VEHICLE FIRES ON 2000 FOCUS. WHILE DRIVING 20-25 MPH AND MAKING A TURN, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE, CONSUMER IS ABLE TO TURN WHEEL 360 DEGREES. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER, LOOSE NUT IN STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED. ON 11 FEB 2002 AT 20 MPH STEERING WAS UNRESPONSIVE AGAIN. VEHICLE STILL AT DEALERSHIP AT THIS TIME. 2 PIECE STEERING COLUMN HAD DISCONNECTED. DEALER CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY, DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO REMEDY IT. *AK THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE PRESS FIT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SHAFT AND THE JOINT FAILED DUE TO STEERING CLOUMN ASSEMBLY FAILURE. ALSO, STEERING COLUMN FOUND RETAIN NUT LOOSE CAUSING THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO ILL AND THE HORN INOPERATIVE. *YH
IN JAN 2002 FORD WANTED TO BUY CAR BACK BUT SAID THE CAR IS 2 YEARS OLD SO IT WAS ONLY WORTH HALF OF ITS VALUE DUE TO THE CAR WOULD HAVE TO GO TO AN AUCTION CAR WAS IN SHOP 77 DAYS THEN RELEASED AND 4 DAYS LATER PARTS WENT UP AGAIN AND CAR LOST STEERING AND BRAKES AND HAD ACCIDENT THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE KILLED BY THIS PROBLEM FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT SEEMS THEY DONT CARE. *AK

BRAKES FAILED. PROCEEDED TO STOP SIGN, PRESSED THE BRAKE TO STOP, GRINDING AND CLANKING NOISES HEARD, CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN AND CAR WENT COMPLETELY THROUGH STOP SIGN. HAD TO USE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR. CAR IS AT DEALERSHIP AND REQUIRES BOTH BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR REPLACEMENT. BRAKES HAVE SQUEAKED SINCE I TOOK THE CAR OFF THE LOT BRAND NEW. *AK
