NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ford Focus. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Transmission problems. Transmission went out at 68k miles. Recalls in previous years but not on 2017 but same problem still occurring
I took my vehicle to have the recall repaired they did not fix all the issues with the recall as soon as I picked it up it broke down again. They are now charging me for a diagnostic test that I did not ask for they told me the problem they think it is which is covered by the recall but now they refuse to work on my car. The service manager is rude and unprofessional cussing at me and my husband on the phone. Now I'm stuck with a car that doesn't work and they are refusing to replace parts that are covered under the recall.
Driving and car no longer would accelerate, this could have been very dangerous had I been traveling on a fast paced road/highway and even more concerning with my child in the car. oil pressure light and check engine light came on simultaneously when this issue happened. Car was immediately turned off in hopes of not damaging the engine. There was no warning of any type of issue with the car. Has been running fine for almost 6 years, until this. 2017 Ford Focus Ecoboost SE Approx 59,000 miles.
Car stutters when accelerating, has very low idle to the point of feeling like stalling, Car has stalled after filling up with fuel. The code that the car is giving is P1450 "Unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum"
Driving 75mph down the frontage road. The car just stopped. No warning no lights just a violent stop. If there were cars behind us or we were on the highway we could be dead right now!! It stopped no lights took us 2 hrs to get the car home with a no service area. It was clicking in the engine. After it was parked for hrs. This is the second time in 7 months this car has had a serious manufacturer problem! It is unsafe and I will never drive it again!!! Bad for having only 63,000 miles on it!! I got it with 52,000 miles and it broke down instantly with a transmission problem. Was in the shop for 4 months and now this. Dangerous
The recall that Ford has out on Focus’s between 2012-2018 is exactly the problems my 2017 ford focus is having, where it stalls constantly and won’t turn on after. I’ve tried filing with only premium gas, keeping my tank full and it is still happening. I’ve had my vehicle towed multiple times. I’ve had the canister purge valve replaced and am still having issues.
Engine rpm’s race wildly when auto trans shifts from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4. Vehicle suddenly will no longer go in Reverse. Dealer says there are no applicable programs affecting my vehicle despite same problems reported on 2012 - 2016 models. Independent transmission shops refuse to attempt repairs on all models of Focus due to widespread knowledge of defective transmission design. I see no reason why my vehicle is excluded! I am told 4-5 month wait to be seen for dealer service.
Changing gears, jerking into gears, jumping into neutral, transmission hot warning light turns on

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate properly. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Car is now shutting off while driving. It shut off on me 3 times almost causing several accidents. I called a Ford dealership about current recall and was told I would be charged for a diagnostic and have to pay out of pocket
2017 Ford Focus; CNP valve issues; previous Safety Recall 19S22 was issued in 2019. The dealership where car was purchased performed recall; deformation of tank in Nov 2019. The 2017 Ford Focus never really idled very well even after recall was performed by dealership in 2019, as well as; increased RPM and sluggish at acceleration. Then early June 2023 fuel gauge was reading 44 miles to empty; so stopped to fill gas tank. Turned car off completely had keys in pocket; immediately after filling the gas tank the Ford Focus would not start; eventually able to start vehicle by continuous attempts and then finally punching the gas pedal once car was started kept car running for at least 40 minutes. Performed OBD scan shortly after which gave error code PO456. Recall 19S22 clearly states that a OBD scan of PO456 could very well be a CNP valve issue. Contacted dealership and made appt for 6/20/2023; at which time the dealership stated that recall has already been performed for the 2017 Ford Focus in Nov 2019. Contacted Ford Motor Company; who then stated that they are aware of the CNP issue but since there is no current recall that they are not liable and to contact NHTSA.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the purge valve was faulty and needed to be replaced. The purge valve was replaced but the failure persisted. The EVAP message and the check engine warning light were displayed, and the vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 50,000.
I purchased my car 3 years ago from a dealer. I maintain maintenance on my vehicle faithfully. I was coming from work I had stopped at the stop sign, when I went to accelerate to make a left turn. My car started to decelerate as if I was in the wrong gear. I tried to drive and it would drive to maybe 10/15 mph and sound as if I’m in the wrong gear. The car is automatic so I was completely lost. I’m thankful I was able to make it home. The transmission failure service light came on. The car stopped going in reverse. My mechanic says the transmission alone is about 4500. I’m still making payments on this car to help my credit. I know someone who has the exact same car with the same problem. The transmission. I called different ford places. They were no help. Then getting on here just made me feel worst because ALOT of people are apparently having the same problem with same kind of car. Please help.
I’ve only had the vehicle 1 yr 2 months. Purchased from CMA Honda and the vehicle powered completely off. The battery was replaced and the transmission control module, they are now saying it’s internal. The entire transmission has to be taken apart and they are now saying it will be $5000 or more. Nope trading it.
Transmission does not shift properly. Vehicle shakes and shudders while accelerating. Noticeable loss of power and acceleration while shaking and shuddering happens.
This regards my 2017 Ford Focus. The car is 6 years old, I am still making payments on it, has a little over 50,000 miles on it, has been maintained by Ford every year since I bought it, and the transmission and extended warranty had just expired about 2 months ago. A few weeks ago, I'm driving down the freeway around 1pm Pacific, traveling about 60mph when the engine seemed to 'seize up', the engine light came ON, the car jerked several times creating a severely dangerous driving hazard as I tried to keep it under control. It slowly began losing speed, so I made my way off the freeway and made my way to the Ford dealer who had been maintaining the car. It felt like the car was going to stall any minute so I'm lucky I got to the dealer. It took them a few days to get back to me, and they then told me the entire engine and 'boost system' needed to be replaced at a cost of approx. $7,000 (probably just to get another defective engine). They tried to work with Ford to get some financial assistance since this is obviously a defective car, but Ford refused. The dealer suggested I call Ford, so I did, and spoke with a rep and a supervisor on May 22, told them their car was defective and my life had been put in danger, and they both told me they wouldn't help in any way. As I write this, the dealer has ordered parts and am awaiting repairs. I will have been without a car for 3 weeks, paying for Lyft and borrowing cars to get to work. I understand there's a class action lawsuit (Barnes et al vs Ford, US District Court of Delaware Case 1:22-cv-00823). Ford should buy my car back.
The 2017 ford focus had a 2nd engine installed by ford dealer in April '21 at 56,000 miles due to engine malfunction and seizing. The same thing happened three weeks ago at only 38,000 miles on the new engine. The car would not accelerate then all of the lights came on and stalled. Can not drive.
On MANY multiple occasions the vehicle has undergone a transmission/clutch failure. The worst of which was when passing a vehicle on a busy section of interstate and the car effectively put itself in neutral, unable to accelerate, at which point the vehicle behind us had to swerve to not collide with us or cause an accident. After the third time bringing it back to the dealership for repairs, I looked into it. We have only been able to drive this car LITERALLY HALF of the time we’ve owned it, and poured thousands in repairs for obvious and negligent manufacturing defects that YOU KNOW ABOUT. This is a well known issue, and FAR FAR beyond the reasonable requirements for a recall. I am stuck with this vehicle and am mounting debt because I cannot afford another car. The NHTSA has outright failed in its duties to protect people from Fords clear fraud and negligence. I’m unsure if it’s political pressure to not oust them, or because you’re corrupt. Either way, I’ve decided to mount a campaign to bring light to this issue, and your complete lack of response. Ford is at fault for fraud and endangerment. YOU are at fault for willfully ignoring an issue that has, ON THOUSANDS OF WELL DOCUMENTED OCCASIONS, caused real financial and/or physical harm. Which is literally the exact opposite of your institution’s purpose. I will not be including the paperwork or screenshots of our (currently) 10+ shop visits and bills, because you already have thousands (if not literal millions) of examples. You make me a sick as Ford. Shame on you.
My car does not turn on immediately after filling my gas tank. The entire car stutters and shakes when I accelerate from a stop. My car is running the fault codes P1450 and P0420, so there is excessive vacuum in my fuel tank/EVAP and low catalyst system efficiency due to the problems with the exhaust or fuel system. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety is out at risk because my car could stall while driving and not start up again, leading to a possible crash. It will be confirmed by a dealer tomorrow, and has not been inspected yet. I have a check engine light and running those codes. The problem progressed from stuttering when accelerated to the vehicle not being able to turn on when filled with gas.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was later driven to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was related to an emissions failure. No further information was provided. The contact stated that the vehicle had stalled on multiple occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 103,000.
Car has 61,000 miles on it, after leaving home and getting on the interstate my wife and I felt the car lurch and the oil light came on. We pulled over and the lifters were ticking and we shut the engine off and had the car towed home(about a mile) I drained the oil and there was rubber chunks in it. Dropped the oil pan and the oil pump belt tensioner is broken, cogs are stripped off the belt and it became apparent that our oil pressure dropped to zero at highway speed, had we not been in the right lane and pulled over quickly the motor would have locked up at 70mph. I did some research and found the problem to be somewhat widespread. I contacted Ford hoping for a goodwill gesture considering the miles and was told there will be nothing they can do about it. We made the last two car payments on it and it has sat untouched on jackstands in the driveway since then.

Driving on 2 lane, car suddenly went dead at 60 mph . Able to get off road. Cranked back up. Checked for code and fuel tank had vacuum lock. Checked with ford. There is a recall on that but not my vin number. Took to Ford garage x4 paid eval. Fee of $159 twice to diagnose. No success. They replace fuel door and clutch total bills approx $500. Last failed attempt to fix the problem revealed more trouble... back end was swerving and jerking.. felt out of control. Somehow when the clutch wS changed out the rear shocks and front struts were busted. And No I didn't take it back after that. Why does mt car show recall code is problem yet vin not covered and garage tries to fix everything but the recall prob and makes everything worse. I do not have the money to throw into these "fixes" I an disabled on tight budget. This is a problem that began on the assembly line at time vehicle was manufactured. I bought I n good faith and ended up with a lemon.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle started shaking excessively. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to her residence. The contact also stated that the failure had been reoccurring for over a year. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with a failed transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
I've had continuous issues with the DPS6 in my 2017 Focus that is consistent with that from previous model years, which Ford claims has been resolved. It has NOT been resolved. At 62,000 miles, the original transmission blew and had to be replaced in 2021. In spring of 2023, issues with the faulty TCM continually propped up and has been a considerable financial burden, as I've replaced components of the DPS6 to no avail and spent a considerable amount of money trying to resolve the issue. Shifting is challenging, the vehicle does not always turn on consistently and the transmission will occasionally kick into neutral and skip gears. I've replaced the actuators and the "lifetime" A/T fluid (which also should be investigated), and purchased a new TCM, which has been an even bigger arduous expense to get programmed and replaced. Overall, this has just been a huge financial burden and has cost me far more than the vehicle is currently worth. I'm displeased that NHTSA has not yet gotten involved and held Ford accountable for their poor craftsmanship. The TCM issue began in mid-April 2023, starting with skipping gears and jerking of the car. No accident occurred from this, but the car is a hazard to drive, but I rarely have any alternative as it is my daily driver that I pay a lot of money to be stuck with.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while at a stop, the vehicle stalled. The contact attempted to depress accelerator pedal, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed with evaporative canister failure. The vehicle was repaired five additional times after the first failure; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,459.
The DPS6 dual-clutch transmission shudders and shifts hard during all phases and speeds. Acceleration is unpredictable and feels as though it could stall at any time. Ford wants $3000 - $5000 to repair. They also state the issue is common.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds on several occasions, the vehicle drove rough, and the transmission failed to shift as intended. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where and was diagnosed and determined that the dual-clutch had caused the clutch to slip, and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
The vehicle has an intermittent problem that causes it to lose power, become unresponsive, and leave the occupants vulnerable to a collision if it becomes necessary to accelerate from cross traffic or to be rear ended due to rapid deceleration. At random intervals usually daily the check engine light will begin to flash and pressing the throttle the driver will find that the vehicle will not accelerate. This condition last typically 30 seconds, during that time the vehicle is essentially coasting along under simple inertia. Then as suddenly as it began the light turns off and the car returns to normal. My vehicle experienced catastrophic failure during one such episode resulting in a thrown rod in cylinder number 3, the vehicle had the engine replaced under warranty at a cost of $12,000. After the car was returned I found that it continued to experience the same problem, returned to the place that installed the engine and they weren't able to repair the problem. Was directed to take to Temecula Ford, they required I allow their technician to drive the vehicle home nightly over 40 miles each direction and after 2 weeks weren't able to supposedly recreate the problem. I picked the car up with nothing to show but extra miles. Immediately the problem once again began, I scanned the ecu and took screen shots and data recordings to provide the dealer. Directed to return the car, they had it another week and despite having the provided information stated they couldn't duplicate the issue. Decided to take it to another local dealership, they had it a week and stated the problem was caused by using NGK spark plugs instead of MotorCraft plugs. I informed them they were installed with the new engine and they required I purchase their spark plugs. I paid $400 for plugs and picked the vehicle up, the problem persisted. I was however given a refund. Still can't use the car, Ford corporation refused to do anything for me.
Driving on Interstate-95, when Oil Pressure light illuminated, at first very dim, and then within an 1/8 of a mile, lost all power and the engine began to sound like a tank. Pulled over to shoulder and tried to re-start the vehicle with no luck. Brought vehicle to Ford Dealership and was advised of a Service Bulletin of a timing belt failure and I was to replace the engine long block and turbo. Seems ridiculous that I had to spend out of pocket money to replace a known failure at 67,000 miles when according to Service Manual, INSPECT TIMING BELT AT 150,000 Miles. I want justice and a FULL refund for this issue. This issue has also caused a streamline of failures within the vehicle due to disruption of seals amongst most of my rubber lines.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to immediately start refueling the vehicle. not maintaining oil pressure, my ford is a 2017 1.0l ecoboost motor with a stick shift, i found a recall, Recall Reference Number: 23S64. for this motor but it only covers cars with automatic transmission, mine is a manual transmission, from my research they both have the exact same motor, 98500 ish miles. sitting almost 2 years because it wont hold oil pressure. what is the difference between the 2 motors. and why did you not recall all 1.0l ecoboost motors in this recall.
The vehicle shakes, stalls shuts off when filling up with gas. Once gas is added, you have to keep the feet on the gas (reveing up to ensure it starts), then drive to get the gas flowing into the engine. The vehicle was taken for diagnostic with an Auto Zone and a mechanic and the codes pulled (more than once) was...P1450 and P2196. This was brought to the attention of dealer at time of purchase and requested another vehicle. They ensured it could be fixed; after another yr. or more now the codes are appearing again. I have dates for repair, but will have to get copies of work completed from the dealer.

While accelerating from a complete stop, the car frequently jerks and sputters while it appears to be attempting to switch gears. This has been a problem since I bought the car pre-owned in 2020 but it has become much more frequent and instead of doing a single jerk or sputter when stepping on the gas, it does it much more. I did research more and it appears the make, model, and year were part of a recall prior to my owning the vehicle for what seems to be the same issue; however, my VIN was not part of that recall.
My vehicle has a faulty transmission problem and a fuel problem, The vehicle has been inspected by personal mechanics and CarX, 5 codes have been scanned and confirmed that their are 2 codes for the transmission and 2 codes for the fuel system. Check engine light is on, the vehicle will no longer go into reverse but can continue to go into drive but does not accelerate rpm when accelerating on the gas.

Transmission shakes when taking off and stumbles to get going. it almost got me hit when turning due to it not wanting to go.
The transmission starts to shift too hard. It doesn't accelerate easily, and when it does, it gets very jerky.
The transmission is slipping on my 2017 Ford Focus. There is delayed braking, acceleration and harsh vibrations. There is already a recall on 2011-2016 ford transmissions. 2017 needs to be included!
