2005 FORD FREESTYLE HAS UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION OR "LUNGING" OR "SURGING". WHEN THE VEHICLE IS AT LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS MANEUVERING IN A PARKING LOT OR PULLING INTO DRIVEWAY, VEHICLE WILL INCREASE THE RPM'S AND CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO JUMP FORWARD OR BACKWARDS. THE VEHICLE MAY MOVE UP TO 15 FEET IF THE BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED AND IS VERY SCARY. *TT
WHILE AT IDLE IN REVERSE OR FORWARD CAR LUNGES AND ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN IF FOOT IS NOT ON BRAKE 1THIS COULD CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR INJURY IVE SEEN MORE COMPLAINTS ON THIS SIGHT AND RELIZE THAT THIS IS BECOMING A SERIUOS PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES WHAT CAN BE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *TT
UNEXPLAINED ACCELERATION OF VEHICLE. CAR LURCHES FOR NO APPARENT CAUSE. *TR
MY CAR LUNGES FORWARD WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT (BRAKE IS APPLIED) OR DRIVING SLOW IN THE PARKING LOT. IT HAPPENS UNEXPECTEDLY AND LUNGES FORWARD AS IF THE ACCELATOR IS BEING PUSHED QUICKLY, EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE TO EITHER BE STOPPED OR TO SLOW DOWN IN A PARKING LOT. I TYPICALLY PRESS THE BRAKE VERY HARD TO TRY TO GET CONTROL OF THE CAR TO AVOID HITTING ANYTHING IN FRONT OF ME. IT DOES CONCERN ME THAT I IF IT OCCURS, THAT I COULD HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT A LIGHT OR POSSIBLE A PERSON WALKING THROUGH A PARKING LOT. WHEN DRIVING HOME THE OTHER DAY (45 - 50 MPH), MY CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT ALSO CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THE PROBLEM I HAD WITH THE CAR LUNGING AND THE CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT COMING ON. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND TOLD ME THE CAR NEEDED A NEW ALTERNATOR AND THAT THIS WOULD FIX THE LUNGING ISSUE AND THE CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT ISSUE. THEY PUT THE NEW ALTERNATOR IN (WHICH WAS NOT CHEAP) AND I NOTICED ON THE WAY HOME THAT THE CAR WAS STILL LUNGING. I WAS DRIVING THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY MORNING AND NOTICED THE CAR CONTINUED TO LUNGE WHEN STOPPLED AT A LIGHT. ALSO, WHEN I STOPPED AT MY MAILBOX THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND THE CHARGING SYSTEM, ENGINE OIL, AND EMISSION CONTROL LIGHTS ARE COMING ON. NEEDLESS TO SAY THE CAR IS GOING BACK TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP MONDAY MORNING. *TT
MY FORD FREESTYLE, LUNGES ALL THE TIME. IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO PARALLEL PARK. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT, BUT I HAVE BEEN VERY CLOSE TO HITTING OTHER PARKED CARS. I LUNGES WHEN MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE IF IT'S IN REVERSE IT LUNGES BACKWARDS. IF IT'S IN DRIVE IT LUNGES FORWARD. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A LONG TIME, MY CAR IS A 2005. WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE AND SOMETIMES WHEN SITTING AT A LIGHT THE CAR WILL LURCH SEVERAL FEET WITH OUT PUTTING MY FOOT ON THE ACELERATOR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 65 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED BUT THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANING DID NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNAWARE OF THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE NOT ONLY HAS AN ISSUE W/ LUNGING, BUT HAS RECENTLY BEEN GOING INTO "FAILSAFE MODE", IN WHICH ACCELERATION IN THE CAR IS COMPLETELY CUT OFF. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY AN 18 WHEELER WHILE TRYING TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE B/C I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE MY CAR TO MOVE TO SAFETY. ONCE I WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE CAR OFF & THEN RESTARTED. I WAS ABLE TO ACCELERATE, BUT IT CONTINUED TO HAPPEN EVERY FEW MILES UNTIL I REACHED HOME. THE FEELING OF HAVING NO CONTROL OF A VEHICLE MOVING AT 65MPH LEFT ME SHAKING. LUCKILY I DID NOT HAVE MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR AT THE TIME. THE FACT THAT FORD KNOWS THERE IS AN ISSUE AND HAS FAILED TO MAKE ANY EFFORT TO CONTACT THE OWNERS OF THE FORD FREESTYLE HAS LEFT ME FEELING DISMAYED AND I NO LONGER HAVE THE CONFIDENCE IN THEIR VEHICLES. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE ACCELERATION PROBLEM PRIMARILY WITH AC RUNNING. ONLY STARTED HAPPENING IN JULY 2011 AT END OF ROAD TRIP FROM OHIO TO NORTH CAROLINA, WHEN WE WOULD COME TO STOPS IN TRAFFIC. NOW THAT IT STARTED IT KEEPS HAPPENING. JUST LAST NIGHT I PARKED AT THE CURB, HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND BEFORE I COULD GET IT IN PARK, IT LUNGED FORWARD. WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE ALREADY I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL IT AND IMMEDIATELY SHUT IT OFF. I'M GOING TO TEST TO SEE IF I TURN OFF THE AC BEFORE I COME TO A STOP OR ONCE IT STARTS HAPPENING, IF THAT MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE SURGES AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN FOOT IS NOT ON ACCELERATOR, OR SUDDENLY SPEEDS UP AT LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS PARKING OR BACKING UP.I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES ALMOST DROVE INTO TRAFFIC , AND REAR ENDED CAR IN FRONT. THIS IS THE SECOND ISSUE WITH THIS EVENT. FIRST OCCURRED IN 02/JULY/2009 FORD REPLACED THROTTLE BODY MOTOR THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM UNTIL THIS WEEK. *TR
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS FREESTYLE AND HAVE EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH IT SURGING WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER IS TURNED ON SINCE ITS PURCHASE. INITIALLY, I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND OTHER SERVICE COMPANIES, BUT THEY "COULD NOT DUPLICATE" THE PROBLEM. THE SURGING HAS GROWN WORSE AS THE CAR AGES. PRESENTLY, I CANNOT GO THROUGH A FAST FOOD DRIVE THROUGH WITH THE AIR ON BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THE CAR LUNGING AND REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT ME. FURTHER, I WORK IN A CITY WITH PEDESTRIANS AND CANNOT TURN THE AIR ON UNTIL I AM OUT OF THE CITY BECAUSE I FEAR HITTING A PERSON. RECENTLY, I CONTACTED FORD DIRECTLY, BUT THEY RESPONDED WITH A SCRIPTED MESSAGE THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE.
MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE LUNGES FORWARD WHEN PUTTING IT IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. IT STARTED A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND WOULD ONLY HAPPEN ONCE IN A WHILE. NOW IT HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY DAY. IF YOUR NOT CAREFUL YOU WILL HIT SOMETHING. EVEN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE WILL STILL LUNGE FORWARD OR BACKWARD. THE PROBLEM IS WORSE IF THE AIR CONDITIONER IS RUNNING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE THROTTLE BODY IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM BUT IT WILL COST OVER $800.00 TO FIX. I CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR AND THINK FORD SHOULD FIX IT UNDER A RECALL DUE TO THIS BEING A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR
NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS-WHEN BACKING OUT THE CAR LUNGES AND GOES DEAD. FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE IS DISPLAYED. HAVE HAD IT LUNGE FORWARD WHEN FOOT IS ON BRAKE AND ENGINE DIES. HAPPENS MORE OFTEN WHEN AIR CONDITIONER IS ON. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. FORD DEALER SAID AIR COMPRESSOR WAS NO GOOD. DID NOT REPLACE BECAUSE WE SAW COMPLAINT ABOUT FORD FREESTYLE. *KB
UPDATE ON ODI 10419757: TOOK CAR TO FORD DEALER BECAUSE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER CAR LUNGED (WHILE BACKING UP). SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE CONTROL ACTUATOR STICKING WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $895.00. TWO OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH FORD FREESTYLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. *KB
2005 FORD FREESTYLE SURGES AND ACCELERATES FROM A STOP OR LOW SPEED. IT IS PARTICULARLY EVIDENT WHEN SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE OR REVERSE TO DRIVE. THE ACCELERATION CAN LAST FOR MAXIMUM 5 SECONDS BUT YOU BETTER HAVE YOUR FOOT FIRMLY PLANTED ON THE BRAKE OR THE VEHICLE COULD LUNGE FORWARD OR BACKWARD INTO ONCOMING OR PARKED CARS AND PEDESTRIANS. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AL THE TIME, OFTEN AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN RUN AND PARKED FOR A 15-30 MINUTE PERIOD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND SHIFTED INTO PARK. UPON SHIFTING OUT OF PARK AND INTO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD ABNORMALLY. THE ETC FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE WARNING LIGHT THEN ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WAS LUNGING FORWARD WHILE IDLING. I NEARLY HIT SOME PEDESTRIANS AND ALSO NEARLY HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT A TRAFFIC STOP WHEN THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD ON ITS OWN. SINCE I HAVE A NEWBORN BABY AND WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY, I DID NOT HESITATE TO BRING IT TO THE DEALER. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY OF THE CAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE PROBLEM IS FAIRLY COMMON WHICH INDICATES IT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR RECALL. I FEEL THIS ISSUE IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH. *TR
JUST AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE PUT THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE TO PULL OUT OF PARKING SPACE AND IT BEGINS TO ACCELERATE AND LUNGE BACKWARD. SAME SYMPTOMS HAPPENED MOVING FORWARD FROM HOT START, WITH A/C ON. THE VEHICLE STALLED AFTER ONE OCCURRENCE WITH THE WRENCH LIGHT ON, UPON TURNING THE KEY TO RESTART NO FAULT LIGHTS WERE ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. THIS UNATTENDED ACCELERATION HAPPENS TYPICALLY UPON A START WHEN THE VEHICLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE WITH THE A/C ON. OUTSIDE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS APPROX 95 DEGREES AND ONLY WILL DO IT IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING IT. NO PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT THIS TIME AS THERE ARE NO STORED FAULT CODES OR VISUAL FAILURES AT THIS TIME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH AND APPROACHING A TRAFFIC STOP. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THE RPMS INCREASED RAPIDLY WITH AN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP OR WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE MOTOR MOUNT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
WE HAVE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF THIS PROBLEM HAPPENING RECENTLY. WHAT HAPPENS IS AT VERY LOW SPEEDS OR IDLE SPEEDS, OUR 2005 FORD FREESTYLE LIMITED HAS STARTED LURCHING OR LUNGING EITHER WHEN BACKING UP, OUT OF THE GARAGE, FOR EXAMPLE, OR OUT OF A DRIVEWAY OR INTO/OUT OF A PARKING PLACE. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AT DRIVING SPEEDS OR HIGHWAY SPEEDS, BUT ONLY OCCURS AT LOW SPEEDS. I HAVE READ ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND OTHER FREESTYLE OWNERS SAY IT IS A THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM. I LUCKILY HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION WHEN IT HAPPENS AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAND ON THE BRAKE, WHICH CUTS DOWN THE LUNGING FEELING. THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE. IF SOMEONE IS CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND THEY BACK INTO A CAR BECAUSE OF A LUNGE BY THEIR CAR, NO INSURANCE COMPANY WILL JUST BELIEVE THAT "THE CAR DID IT." IF SOMEONE IS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT AND HITS THE CAR OPPOSITE OF THEIRS, DUE TO THIS LUNGE, IT WILL NOT BE PRETTY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR
MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE HAS DEVELOPED A SIGNIFICANT SURGE WHEN MANEUVERING AT LOW SPEEDS LIKE IN A PARKING LOT OR DRIVEWAY. IF THE DRIVER IS NOT VERY QUICK TO RESPOND TO THIS SURGE THE DRIVER WOULD EASILY LOSE CONTROL. SINCE, PARKING LOTS AND DRIVEWAYS OFTEN HAVE PEOPLE (ESPECIALLY CHILDREN) AROUND IT IS A VERY BAD SITUATION NOT TO HAVE TOTAL CONTROL OF A CAR. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN THE A/C IS RUNNING AND THE CAR IS AT NORMAL OR HIGH OPERATING TEMPERATURES (NOT WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD). I SEARCHED THE INTERNET RELATED TO THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THIS CONDITION AND THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A STRAIGHT FORWARD ANSWER AS TO THE CAUSE. I WOULD NOT NORMALLY WRITE A COMPLAINT BUT WHEN I SAW THAT THE NHTSA IS INVESTIGATING THIS ISSUE, I CALLED A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF FORD HAD ANY NOTICES OR BULLETINS THAT MIGHT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE. I DESCRIBED THE CONDITION AND EXPLAINED THAT NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATING THIS ISSUE BUT WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT. I THEN ASKED IF THEY COULD SEARCH FOR NOTICES OR BULLETINS AND GET BACK TO ME, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD NOT DO THAT UNLESS I FIRST BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO THEIR SERVICE CENTER. I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE SAFETY SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS ISSUE AND THAT SINCE HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM THAT IT WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE TO SEARCH FOR ANY INFORMATION FORD HAD ON THE ISSUE BEFORE I BROUGHT IT IN AND CHARGED FOR SERVICE THAT MAY NOT BE OF ANY HELP. THE SERVICE REP THEN SAID HE WOULD NOT HELP ME AND THEN BASICALLY HUNG UP ON ME. THE ANSWER TO THIS ISSUE MAY BE SOMETHING VERY SIMPLE (LIKE CLEANING THE THROTTLE BODY) BUT THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER CONTROLLED RESPONSE IS VERY REAL AND VERY DANGEROUS AND FORD SHOULD BE WORKING MUCH HARDER TO RESOLVE THIS. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE FOR 1YR 1/2 NOW IT HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT, I ALMOST TWICE LOST MY FAMILY AND MY LIFE BUT THANK GOD AND THE QUICK REFLEX OF MY HUSBAND WE ARE ALIVE, ALL DUE TO THE THROTTLE, I CANT DESCRIBE IT HOW I WISH WELL I WOULD NEED A WHOLE PAGE TO EXPLAIN WE HAVE TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF IT WE ARE RIGHT NOW WITHOUT A VEHICLE IT COST TOO MUCH AND WE HAVE NO WARRANTY, SO WE WILL HAVE TO MANAGE FOR NOW UNTIL WE CAN, ALTHOUGH MY HUSBAND IS IN THE MILITARY WE ARE NOT RICH AND I WORK 6 DAYS A WEEK AND HAVE 3 CHILDREN STUDENTS WHOM ALL HAVE AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS ACTIVITIES, I AM IN TOTAL SHOCK I REALLY THOUGHT WE HAD IT MADE WITH THIS CAR ITS COMFORTABLE 3RD ROW BUT NOW AFTER READING ALL THE REVIEWS WE ARE SO HORRIBLY UPSET AND FEEL SO TAKEN OF ****TS, THIS PROBABLY HAS NO AFFECT ON WHOSE RESPONSABILITY THIS PROBLEM FALLS ON WELL IM SURE THEY HAVE A SUPERB CAR, BUT FOR THE AMERICAN FAMILIES TRYING TO MAKE IT, IT IS A SHAME THAT FORD KNOWING ABOUT THIS HASNT TAKEN NO ACTION, BUT TO EACH HIS OWN AND ALTHOUGH IT SEEMS MINOR TO THE HIGH POWER CORPORATES LIKE FORD WHOEVER NEEDS TO OWN UP TO THIS PROBLEM AND HASNT AND JUST SEEMS TO PASS THE HOT POTATO TO OTHERS THEY TOO WILL HAVE THEIR JUDGEMET DAY, AND YES I MIGHT SOUND DRASTIC TO YOU IT IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER TO US THE PEOPLE WHO TRUSTED IN PURCHASING A FORD, THANK YOU. *TR
VEHICLE IS SURGING AT LOW SPEEDS. PARKING LOT SPEEDS. MUST APPLY BRAKES TO STOP MOTION. SEVERAL FEET COVERED BEFORE ABLE TO APPLY BRAKES. HAPPENED IN EXCESS OF 10 TIMES. CAR IS AT DEALER NOW AND THEY HAVE WITNESSED TO SURGING. CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO FORD SERVICE NOW AND THEY HAVE HAD IT FOR 24 HOURS. THEY ARE STATING THEY DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE.
I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. I OFTEN EXPERIENCE A SURGE IN MY VEHICLES ACCELERATION EVEN WHEN I HAVE NOT TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL. THIS OCCURS MOST OFTEN WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING OFF AND JUST AFTER I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE. TODAY I NEARLY RAN OVER A PEDESTRIAN AFTER SHIFTING MY CAR INTO GEAR, AND SO I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM WHEN I GOT HOME. I SEE THAT YOU ARE INVESTIGATING THIS PROBLEM WITH THE FREESTYLE. PLEASE DEMAND A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

THIS PRESENTS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE SURGE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE THE CAR TO RUN INTO SOMEONE OR SOMETHING, OR TO UNEXPECTEDLY ENTER AN INTERSECTION. THE CAR HAS 87000 MILES AS OF AUGUST, 2011. MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE CROSSOVER FREQUENTLY LUNGES AT LOW SPEEDS AND WHEN THE DRIVER IS NOT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. HOWEVER, WHEN THE A/C WAS REPAIRED (THE EXPANSION VALVES WERE REPLACED) THE PROBLEM RETURNED TO ITS PREVIOUS "STRENGTH" OR STRONGER AND MORE OFTEN. *TT
INTIALLY NOTED THE VEHICLES RPMS JUMP AND A QUICK SURGE IN THE ENGINE WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 65MPHS. THIS CONTINUED TO OCCUR RADOMLY AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. A SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON. THEY REPLACED AN EGR VALVE. PUT IN AN FUEL TREATMENT. ONE DAY LATER THE THE LIGHT IS BACK ON AND CONDITION HAS GOTTEN WORSE.NOW THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD,STILL RANDOMLY,BUT FREQUENTLY! HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY MAJOR INCIDENTS OR ACCIDENTS,YET!(JUST RAN UP A CURB) READ THIS IS A COMMON CONDITION AND IS BEING INVESTIGATED. RANDOM LUNGING WHEN, GENERALLY, CAR IS PLACED IN REVERSE. IT DOES IT RANDOMLY, INCREASING IN FREQUENCY. HOWEVER, TODAY, WE GOT A WARNING LIGHT AND THE VEHICLE WENT INTO "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" AND WAS JERKING AND JUST NOT DRIVING APPROPRIATELY. VEHICLES LUNGES INVOLUNTARILY AND UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN FOOT IS RELEASED FROM THE BRAKE (WITHOUT ANY DEPRESSION OF THE ACCELERATOR). THE PROBLEM OCCURS IN BOTH DRIVE AND REVERSE AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS (I.E. BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, ADVANCING THROUGH A DRIVE THROUGH RESTAURANT, SWIPING A BADGE AT A GATED ENTRANCE). BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE HAS BECOME DANGEROUS DUE TO LACK OF VEHICLE CONTROL. THE LUNGING REQUIRES VERY FIRM BRAKE APPLICATION TO STOP AND AVOID A CRASH. THIS REQUIRES AN IMMEDIATE RECALL TO MITIGATE THE POTENTIAL RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
2005 FORD FREESTYLE UNEXPECTED SURGE AT STOPLIGHT, CONTROLLED BY APPLYING BRAKES HARDER, AND THENVECHICLE STALLED. THE EVENT WOULD HAVE FORCESD US INTO THE INTERSECTION, POSSIBILEY CAUSING BODY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE. THIS OCCURANCE ALSO HAPPENED 1 WEEK PRIOR AS WE WERE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE. BOTH OCCURENCES HAPPENED AFTER THE IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF FOR 15-30 MINUTES AND THEN RESTARTED. THIS OCCURANCE HAS HAPPENED AT LEAT 5 OTHER TIMES. ON SOME OF THE OCCURENCES THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE WENT TO SAFE MODE OPERATION. SAFE MODE OPERATION WOULD CEASE IF THE IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF AND THE VECHICLE WAS ALLOWED TO SIT FOR A TIME. FIRST AND SECOND OCCURANCE HAPPENED AFTER USING AN 10% ETANAHOL MIX FROM ONE PARTICULAR COMPANY. THE MOST RECENT OCCURANCES HAPPENED WITH A 10%ETANOL MIX FROM TWO DIFFERENT SUPPLIERS.. FUEL SYSTEM AND AIR FILTER CLEANED PRIOR TO THE LAST TWO EVNTS. *TT

ABOUT A MONTH AGO, I RECEIVED ERROR MESSAGES ON MY DASHBOARD RANGING FROM CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO CRITICAL ENGINE FAILURE. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND HE SAID THERE WERE ALL SORTS OF ERROR CODES THAT NEEDED TO BE CLEARED OUT. HE SAID THIS WAS COMMON AND HAPPENS EVERY 3 TO 4 YEARS. I PAID THE MONEY, HAD THE ERROR MESSAGES / COMPUTER CHIP RESET, AND WENT ON MY WAY. DURING THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, MY CAR WILL SURGE WHILE I'M TEMPORARILY STOPPED (AT A STOP LIGHT, DRIVE THROUGH WINDOW, ETC), AND THE ENGINE DIES ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME. THE CAR WILL LUNGE 3 TO 5 FEET AS SOON AS I TAKE MY FOOT OFF OF THE BREAK AND BEFORE I CAN TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL. IT IS EXTREMELY UNNERVING, IT HAS BEEN VERY HOT IN ARKANSAS DURING THE LAST FEW WEEKS (TEMPS IN THE HIGH 90S / LOW 100S) AND MY AIR CONDITIONER IS ON WHILE THIS HAPPENS. VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AFTER VERY LIGHTLY TOUCHING THE BRAKE WHILE PARKING. I WAS MANEUVERING THE CAR INTO A FAIRLY TIGHT PARKING SPACE, AND THE SUDDEN SURGE CAUSE THE CAR TO LUNCH INTO A FENCE POST, DAMAGING THE FRONT BUMPER AND FENDER (AND THE FENCE POST). THIS IS THE 3RD OR 4TH OCCURRENCE, BUT WAS THE MOST VIOLENT. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD ABOUT 6-8 FEET, AND THE IDLE JUMPED UP FROM 750 TO 2,500 OR SO. THE OTHER SURGING INSTANCES ALSO OCCURRED IMMEDIATELY AFTER APPLYING LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SURGES IN THOSE INSTANCES, THE IDLE THEN DROPPED TO NORMAL. THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 100K MILES ON IT, AND THE THROTTLE BODY HAS BEEN CLEANED ON A REGULAR BASIS SINE 20K, TYPICALLY EVERY 20K. THE FIRST SURGE WAS NOTICED AT AROUND 98K. IT HAPPENS APPROXIMATELY ONCE A WEEK NOW. *TR

NOW IT'S HAPPENING WHEN IDLING AT STOP LIGHTS OR IN TRAFFIC WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING ON...WHICH IS GREAT IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN FLORIDA WHEN IT'S 95 DEGREES OUTSIDE...HAVING TO DRIVE AROUND WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN BECAUSE I CAN'T DRIVE WITH AIR ON OR CAR WILL STALL IS HIGHLY ANNOYING. WITH ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. THE CAR HAS 147K MILES ON IT (MOSTLY HIGHWAY) AND I LOVE MY CAR. THE LUNGING IS SCARY THOUGH. THE SERVICE TECHS COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE LURCHING/SURGING, BUT THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE "AWD MALFUNCTION", WHICH IN TURN THEY THOUGHT MIGHT BE A RESULT OF A BAD OIL PRESSURE PUMP (HOWEVER IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MULTI-THOUSAND DOLLAR REPAIR FOR THEM TO EVEN INVESTIGATE FURTHER, SO I DIDN'T HAVE THEM DO ANYTHING). THE SURGING/LURCHING IS GETTING WORSE, AND I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR. I FEAR FOR THE SAFETY OF MY CHILDREN, MYSELF, AND THOSE WHO MIGHT HAPPEN TO BE IN FRONT OF ME WHEN MY CAR SURGES. *KB
AFTER SITTING IN A RESTAURANT'S PARKING LOT WITH THE ENGINE IDLING AND THE AIR CONDITIONING ON FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, THE CAR LUNGED BACKWARD SEVERAL FEET WHEN THE CAR WITH PLACED INTO REVERSE. ONCE THE CAR WAS STOPPED, I PLACED THE CAR IN DRIVE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. LUCKILY, THERE ONCE NO ONE AROUND THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED OR THERE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURIES CAUSED BY THE CAR'S ACTIONS. ALSO, THE CAR'S "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" AND "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON. THIS CAUSED THE CAR'S POWER TO BE MINIMIZED TO A CRAWL. WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR'S SPEED UP TO AROUND 20 TO 30 MPH. AFTER EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE, I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET TO FIND THAT MANY INDIVIDUALS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. IT APPEARS THAT IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE THROTTLE BODY COMPONENT ON THIS MODEL THAT IS BAD AND CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I WOULD HOPE THAT FORD WOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THIS PART UNDER A RECALL.
