TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,000.
CAME TO A SLOW STOP ON A DOWNHILL SLOPE WHEN DRIVER'S SIDE FRAME RAIL BROKE FROM APPARENT RUST THROUGH. INSPECTION OF FRAME AND SUSPENSION SHOWS MUCH RUST DETERIORATION EVEN THOUGH THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND KEPT UNDER A CARPORT ON A PAVED DRIVEWAY. ALL MECHANICAL S, EXTERIOR BODY AND INTERIOR LITERALLY LOOK LIKE A NEW VEHICLE. FORD SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING, AS TOYOTA DID, AND REPLACE THIS TRUCK'S FRAME OR BUY OUT THIS VEHICLE. *TR
2000 FORD RANGER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY WENT INTO LOW 4 WHEEL DRIVE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WENT INTO LOW 4 WHEEL DRIVE IT RESULTED IN HIM CAREENING OFF THE ROAD TO THE RIGHT AND TOTALING THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER WAS INJURED. *JB

WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR UNRELATED REPAIRS, THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED THAT THE MAINFRAME BEHIND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL WAS CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, BUT IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, NO SOLUTION WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 128,858.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO OPERATE WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND THE TURN SIGNALS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE WHEN ENGAGED AS THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON INTERSTATE 05 [AKA] GOLDEN STATE HIGHWAY WHEN TRUCK MADE A FUNNY NOISE AND ENGINE FROZE ? NO ENGINE PROBLEM LIGHT,S CAME ON NO WARNING LIGHT OFF ANY KIND CAME ON WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY ID WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE SINCE THIS IS A STICK SHIFT TRANSMISSION WHEN ID TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE THE STARTER WOULD NOT TURN .HAD THIS BEEN A AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WE WOULD SURLY WITH NO DOUBT BEEN INVOLVED IN A DEATH ACCIDENT STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT FAILED IN MY TRUCK BUTT ENGINE IS COMPLETELY FROZEN [CAN YOU HELP ME LOCATE THE SOURCE OFF THE FAILURE SINCE THIS VEHICLE IS A MUST KEEP VEHICLE I9T,S A FAMILY MEMORIAL MUST KEEP VEHICLE. *TR
DURING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE FOUND A 6 TO 8 INCH HOLE RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME JUST BEHIND THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE AND FRONT SUSPENSION ATTACHMENT LOCATION. NO REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE, BUT FRAME LOOKS TO BE WEAKENED AT THIS POINT.. PHOTOS AVAILABLE. OTHER ISSUES DUE TO RUST: SPRING 2013: REPLACED ENGINE OIL PAN - LEAKING OIL DUE TO RUST HOLES. WINTER 2013: BODY REPAIR - MAJOR RUST AND RIGHT SIDE ACCIDENT DAMAGE - MUCH MORE RUST COMING ON TRUCK. AUTUMN 2013: REPLACED 5 FEET RUSTED BRAKE LINE TO REAR BRAKES - LEAKING BRAKE FLUID, NO BRAKES. SUMMER 2012: STEEL WHEELS WERE REPLACED DUE TO RUSTED BEAD AREA CAUSING WEAKNESS AND AIR LEAKAGE. SPARE TIRE MOUNT FOUND INOPERABLE DUE TO RUSTED SUPPORT.

WHILE MY TRUCK WAS SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT AT WORK I CAME OUT FOR A BRAKE AND I NOTICED THAT THE BED OF THE TRUCK WAS SITTING AGAINST THE CAB. THIS TRUCK IS WASHED AND KEPT OUT OF THE WEATHER AND IT SEEMS STRANGE THAT THE FRAME IS ROTTEN BEFORE THE BODY IS. I KNOW THAT THE ROCKER PANELS AND FENDER WHEELS NORMALLY ROT OUT BUT THEY ARE STILL MINT. *TR
VEHICLE HAS EXHIBITED SEVERE FRAME AND UNDERBODY RUST FOR SEVERAL YEARS; DURING LAST INSPECTION MECHANIC CAUTIONED THAT VEHICLE WAS BADLY RUSTED BUT STILL ABLE TO PASS INSPECTION. I VISUALLY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE THIS EVENING AND FOUND SEVERE DELAMINATION TO FRAME MEMBERS AND SEVERE RUSTING OF BED UNDERFRAME. CROSSMEMBER SUPPORTING BED IS RUSTED THROUGH OR NON-EXISTENT IN APPROXIMATELY 40% OF SURFACE AREA. SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTS, LEAF SPRING MOUNTS, FUEL TANK SUPPORTS, AND FUEL LINES SIGNIFICANTLY RUSTED. APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AGO REAR BRAKE LINES FAILED AT LOW SPEED AND VEHICLE NEARLY COLLIDED WITH PARKED CARS AND ADJANCENT STONE WALL. MECHANIC ATTRIBUTED BRAKE FAILURE TO RUST THROUGH OF REAR BRAKE SYSTEM. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW AND IS STILL OWNED BY ORIGINAL OWNER. VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED SINCE NEW AND PROPERLY CARED FOR. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE REAR BUMPER THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE FRAME SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 218,000.
STARTING FROM HOME, THE VEHICLE HAD NO INDICATION OF TROUBLE LIGHTS IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THEN, DRIVING ABOUT 2 MILES AND UP THE BRIDGE, SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE SLOWLY CAME TO A STOP WITHIN QUICK TIME AND STALLED ON THE UPHILL DIRECTION. A FEW ATTEMPTS TO RESTART, I WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. THE POLICE WAS CALLED AND CAME TO PUSH THE RANGER DOWN THE BRIDGE TO THE SAFETY AREA AND WAITING TWO HOURS LATER FOR THE TOW-TRUCK TO TOW TO THE FORD DEALER. AND, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS OUT. THIS VEHICLE HAD HISTORIES OF REPAIR SINCE THE FIRST YEAR AND THEREAFTER . *TR
UNABLE TO PASS VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO CRACKED FRAME BY MEANS OF RUST DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT SECTION OF THE T-FRAME. THE TRUCK WAS BOUGHT IN 2003 AND HAD A CLEAN CAR FAX REPORT BUT WHEN INSPECTED I WAS INFORMED BY THE INSPECTOR THAT THE RANGER FRAME HAD BEEN WELDED ON PRIOR DUE TO RUST DAMAGE. IN 2005 I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR SHACKLES AND LEAF SPRINGS DUE TO THE SAME RUST DAMAGE. I FEEL THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS DEFECTIVE DUE TO IMPROPER MATERIALS USED IN IT'S CONSTRUCTION CAUSING A HIGH PROBABILITY OF FAILURE AND RISK OF INJURY AND OR DEATH TO MYSELF OR OTHERS AND THAT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY MUST CORRECT OR REFUND AND THAT THE DEALER SHOULD ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT INFORMING ME OF THIS DEFECT. *TR
THE REAR LEAF SPRING ARE ROTTING AWAY. *TR
THE WHOLE FRAME HAS RUSTED AND ERODED CAUSING THE GAS TANK ASSEMBLY TO DROP FROM THE CARRIAGE AND COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL AS MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE TRUCK.THE FRAME IS SHOT. NO ONE (BODY REPAIR SHOPS ) WILL TOUCH IT FOR LIABILITY REASONS. I HAVE NOT SEEN A RECALL ON THIS LIKE THE ONES FOR THE TOYOTA TACOMAS . BUT I'M SURE I CAN NOT BE THE ONLY ONE. I CAN NOT RESELL IT IN ITS PRESENT STATE AS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I COULD NOT DO THAT. I AM LOOKING FOR SOME HELP. I DO NOT THINK A TRUCK SHOULD COMPLETELY ROT AWAY IN 14 YEARS. *TR
THE FRAME ON MY 2000 FORD RANGER HAS RUSTED THROUGH TO THE POINT I DON'T FEEL SAFE PUTTING ANYTHING IN THE BED OF MY TRUCK. IT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE I WILL EVEN FEEL SAFE PUTTING IT BACK ON THE ROAD. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE POOR OVERALL CONDITION OF THE FRAME BUT THE WORST PART IS AT THE REAR LEAF SPRING SHACKLES, HOLES COMPLETELY THROUGH. HAVEN'T CHECKED THE REST OF THE FRAME THOROUGHLY BUT WILL THIS WEEK BEFORE I DECIDE IF IT'S EVEN WORTH THE COST OF REPAIRS. THIS WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING TO FIND ON A TRUCK THAT HAS BEEN FAIRLY WELL MAINTAINED OVER THE YEARS. I WISH I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A FULL SIZE TRUCK. I GUESS I BETTER DO A LITTLE RESEARCH BEFORE I BUY SOMETHING ELSE. I FOUND OUT THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE/WERE AWARE OF THE FRAME ISSUES WITH THESE TRUCKS MANY YEARS AGO. I WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE A LITTLE HOMEWORK BEFORE BUYING THIS RANGER, AT LEAST I WOULD HAVE OIL SPRAYED OR SOMETHING TO PREVENT PREMATURE FAILURE. WILL HAVE TO SEE WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE NEXT TIME I BUY A TRUCK. I WAS HOPING TO FIND FRAME RECALL INFO ON THIS ISSUE BUT I SEE THERE ARE A LOT OF UPSET RANGER OWNERS OUT THERE BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURE WAS CONFIRMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,000. UPDATED 07/01/14 MA THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THREE BRAKE LINES FAILED, THE TAILGATE FAILED AND THE REAR BUMPER RUSTED OUT.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR FRAME, SPARE TIRE, SPARE FRAMING, THE FRAME RAILING AND SHACKLE MOUNTS NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 189,000.
REAR RIGHT FRAME RAIL ROTTED OFF OF TRUCK BUMPER SAGGING. RUST INCURSION INTO LEAF SPRING SHACKLE AFFECTING LEAF SPRING MOUNT. *TR
WAS LOADING A WASHING MACHINE IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK, AND HEARD A CRACK. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK TO SEE THE LEFT REAR SHOCK MOUNT BROKEN OFF THE FRAME. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND THE FRAME HAD HOLES RUSTED THROUGH IN NUMEROUS SPOTS. THE BODY IS GOOD SHAPE. I WASH THE TRUCK REGULARLY, INCLUDING THE UNDER SIDE, SO I DON'T KNOW WHY IT HAS ROTTED IN SPOTS. I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS, AS I HAVE OLDER TRUCKS THAT HAVE NOT RUSTED, THAT SEE HARSH USE ON OUR FARM. THIS IS MY DAILY DRIVER THAT IS FOR PERSONAL USE, AND I LOVED THIS TRUCK TILL I SAW THAT. *TR

I HAVE A 2000 RANGER AND WAS TOLD BY A REPAIR SHOP THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THE REAR SHACKLES AND LEAF SPRING HANGERS BEING COMPLETELY ROTTED OFF THE FRAME. THE WHOLE REAR FRAME IS ROTTED ALSO AND BARELY HOLDING THE REAR BUMPER ON. I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT ALMOST EVERY RANGER LIKE MINE HAS THIS PROBLEM, BOTH OLDER AND NEWER YEARS. THIS ISSUE IS SO BAD THAT AUTO PARTS STORES ARE KEEPING THESE PARTS IN STOCK. THESE TRUCKS ARE NOT SAFE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED ESPECIALLY IN STATES WHICH DO NOT HAVE ANNUAL INSPECTIONS LIKE MINE, MICHIGAN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, WHO INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE DETERIORATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT ON BOTH SIDES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
BRAKES FAIL AT SLOW SPEEDS. SOMETIMES THEY WORK, SOME TIMES THEY START WORKING AND QUIT AND THE TRUCK SLIDES. NO ABS LIGHTS COMING ON AND THE ABS DOESN'T PUMP. SLID INTO PARKING CURB STOP, ALMOST STRUCK OREILLY AUTO PARTS BUILDING IN ATCHISON AND JAMMED MY NECK. HAD BRAKES CHECKED, MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED AND BRAKES WERE BLED WITH NEW FLUID. EVERY THING IN GOOD SHAPE, BUT BRAKES ARE STILL FAILING. MECHANIC IN ATCHISON SAID THIS IS THE SECOND RANGER HE SEEN WITH THIS PROBLEM; ON THE OTHER RANGER THEY REMOVED THE ABS FUSE AND BRAKES FUNCTIONED FINE. WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO CODES OR ABS LIGHTS ON VEHICLE UNTIL FUSE WAS PULLED. WITH NO CODES BEING SET, UNABLE TO FIGURE OUT THIS PROBLEM. FORD NOT WILLING TO INSTRUCT AS TO WHAT IS GOING ON WITHOUT CHARGING $80 AN HOUR FOR REPAIRS. HAVE LIMITED INCOME, CAN NOT AFFORD TO TAKE VEHICLE TO FORD. VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS IS GOING TO CAUSE A COLLISION. PLEASE HELP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS CORRODED FROM RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,000.
NOT REALLY AN INCIDENT, MORE OF A COMPLAINT. WE BOUGHT A 2000 RANGER APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AGO. THE SPARE TIRE WAS MISSING AND WE FOUND OUT WHY. THE SPARE TIRE WINCH ASSEMBLY WAS A BLOCK OF RUST AND THE SHEET METAL THAT MADE UP THE HOLDER THAT THE CARRIER WAS ATTACHED TO IS SO SEVERELY ROTTED THAT IT COULD NOT POSSIBLY EVEN HOLD A TIRE. THE SHEET METAL MENTIONED IS A STRUCTURAL PART OF THE REAR FRAME AND IT HAS MAJOR ROT AND SHOULD PROBABLY BE REPLACED. MY SON NEEDED A SPARE TIRE SO SINCE THERE WAS NO HOLDER HE PUT IT IN THE BED. WHEN HE PUT IT IN THE BED IN BOUNCED TO THE RIGHT AND PUT A LARGE HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE BED JUST BEHIND THE CAB. WE STARTED TO CHECK OUT THE REST OF THE BED ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS SO RUSTED THAT IT WAS LITERALLY STATING TO CRUMBLE IN SPOTS. WHILE CHECKING IT OUT WE PUT SEVERAL MORE HOLES IN THE FLOOR OF THE BED AND THE SIDES JUST BY POKING AROUND WITH A SCREWDRIVER. THE BED IS A STEPSIDE AND THERE IS NO METAL LEFT UNDER THE STEPS AT ALL, IF YOU WERE TO STEP ON EITHER SIDE YOU WOULD CRACK THE FIBERGLASS SIDES. WE ARE NOW IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING TO REPLACE THE BED. ALL OF THE BOLTS HAD TO BE CUT OUT DUE TO THE RUST. ONCE WE GOT THE BED OFF WE WERE SHOCKED TO SEE THAT THE FRAME WAS COVERED TOP TO BOTTOM WITH RUST. I HAVE RESTORED OLDER TRUCKS IN THE PAST SOME FROM THE 40'S AND I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED RUST LIKE I HAVE SEEN ON THIS ONE, IT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE THERE WAS NO PAINT ON IT FROM THE FACTORY AT ALL. WE ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF WIRE BRUSHING THE FRAME SO WE CAN SPRAY A RUST CONVERTER AND TRY TO REPAINT THE FRAME. I HAVE READ SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE RUST ON THESE TRUCKS AND FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE JUST LIKE TOYOTA WAS WHEN THEY HAD A SIMILAR SITUATION INVOLVING RUSTED FRAMES ON THEIR TRUCKS. TRUST ME I AM A DIE HARD FORD FAN BUT I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY SON AND I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. *TR
SAT DOWN IN TRUCK, SEAT BROKE AWAY AND I FELL BACKWARD, NOTED 2 BROKEN BOLTS IN FLOOR, ONE LEFT SIDE ONE RIGHT SIDE,BOTH BOLTS APPEAR TO HAVE FRESHLY BROKEN. REMOVED SEAT TO SEE THE BOLTS WERE FROM THE RECLINER ASSEMBLY, REMOVED THE THREADED PART FROM THE FRAME, THE THREADS APPEARED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 1/4 INCH, ORDERED BOLTS FROM FORD AND REPLACED THE BOLTS FORD PART NUMBER F87Z-1060108-BB, PRICE APPROXIMATELY $40.00, UPON PICKING UP BOLTS ADVISED NO CHARGE. I HAVE MILD BACK STRAIN FROM THE INITIAL FALL BACKWARD. PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT CONCERNED ABOUT MY INCIDENT, MY CONCERN IS IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, AND THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES WHICH HAVE THE EXACT SEAT AND POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE BOLTS, IT APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW, SUCH SMALL BOLTS, I WILL GLADLY FORWARD THE BOLTS REMOVED UPON REQUEST
WELL THE FRAME LOOKS VERY CHEAP NOW AND IS REALLY FLAKING BADLY ALMOST TO THE POINT WHERE I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD EVEN DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A HUGE HOLE IN THE FRAME THAT WENT UNNOTICED UNTIL NOW. *TR
APPROX 10 MINUTES AFTER I HAD GOTTEN HOME I HEARD A NOISE AND LOOKED OUTSIDE.. IT WAS 1:20 A.M; I CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE THE WHOLE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE. AN EXPLOSION COMPLETELY BLEW OFF THE HOOD. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE FIRE WAS HOT ENOUGH THAT THE ALTERNATOR HAD MELTED OFF OF THE TRUCK ITSELF. NO INJURIES OCCURRED FROM THE FIRE. VEHICLE HAS SEVERE FRAME RUST. RECENTLY REAR BUMPER FELL OFF DUE TO FRAME DETERIORATION. BUMPER BRACKETS HAD NOTHING TO SECURE TO. MORE RECENTLY, ONE OF THE STRAPS HOLDING THE GAS TANK BROKE AWAY FROM THE FRAME DUE TO SEVERE DETERIORATION OF THE FRAME. I HAD TO IMPROVISE A RESTRAINT STRAP SINCE A REPLACEMENT WOULD DO NO GOOD SINCE THE FRAME CONNECTION AREA WAS ROTTED THRU. LEAF SPRING BRACKETS ARE ON THE VERGE OF SEPARATION FROM THE FRAME, AGAIN DUE TO SEVERE FRAME DETERIORATION. THE EXTERIOR BODY AND INTERIOR ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. FOR A 2000 VEHICLE TO HAVE THIS SERIOUS OF A FRAME PROBLEM HAS TO BE THE RESULT FOR POOR MATERIAL AND/OR MATERIAL RUST PROOFING. FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS BY OTHER 2000 RANGER OWNERS FOR SIMILAR ISSUES. *TR

ON 06/03/2013 AT APPROXIMATELY 0830 HRS, MY SON WAS DRIVING MY 2000 FORD RANGER EXTENDED CAB 4X4, TAKING HIS SISTER TO THE DENTIST OFFICE. WHILE ENROUTE THE RPM GAUGE SPIKED TO 5000 RPM'S SO HE LET OFF THE GAS AND IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL. HE CONTINUED A SHORT DISTANCE TO THE DENTIST OFFICE AND AS HE WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND COASTED TO A STOP. JUST AS THE VEHICLE STOPPED, MY DAUGHTER SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVER SIDE SO SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE. MY SON EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WENT TO LOOK UNDER THE VEHICLE WHEN HE SAW FIRE DRIPPING DOWN TO THE GROUND. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. FIRE ENGULFED THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND SPREAD TO INTERIOR OF THE CAB, VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE APRIL 2004 AND RECEIVED NUMEROUS LETTERS FROM FORD MOTOR CO. WANTING TO SELL ME AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT NEVER THE FIRST NOTICE OF ANY FACTORY RECALL. OTHER THAN ROUTINE CARE FOR THE VEHICLE, I NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE UNTIL THE FIRE. *TR
THE FRAME ON THE TRUCK IS CRACKED BADLY BEHIND THE CAB ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THERE IS NOT EXCESSIVE RUST TO JUSTIFY THE CRACKED FRAME. THE TRUCK WAS IN A MINOR ACCIDENT OVER A YEAR AGO AND WAS REPAIRED COMPLETELY. THERE WAS A COMPLETE INSPECTION OF THE WHOLE TRUCK AT THAT TIME AND THERE WAS NO FRAME DAMAGE. THE TRUCK IS MAKING A RATTLING SOUND BEHIND THE CAB AND WE NEED TO MAKE A REPAIR TO FIX THIS BEFORE CONTINUING TO DRIVE IT. WONDERING IF THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2000 FORD RANGER LIKE THE TOYOTA. *TR
I TOOK THE TRUCK TO HAVE MUFFLER REPLACED AND BEHIND BOTH FRONT WHEELS THE FRAME IS ROTTEN TO THE POINT IT IS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE. 3 YEARS AGO I HAD THE TIE ROD END FALL OUT IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE TRUCK RUNS GREAT, BODY IS STILL SHINY AND IN GOOD SHAPE BUT THE FRAME IS TOTALLY ROTTEN. WHEN THE TRUCK WAS ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD THE OIL PAN ROTTED OUT AND TO REPLACE IT THE MOTOR HAS TO BE PULLED. I MAINTAINED THE TRUCK WELL ONLY TO FIND OUT IT IS JUNK AT 78,000 MILES AND ONLY WORTH JUNK PRICE. SEEM I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS HAPPENING. WHILE HOME FROM COLLEGE FOR THE WEEKEND I INVESTIGATED THE SMELL OF GAS MY SON WHO DRIVES THIS EXTENDED CAB RANGER XLT NOTIFIED ME OF. UPON LOOKING UNDERNEATH I NOTICED A SMALL SHINNY SPOT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK WITH NO DRIPS OR RUNS. AFTER RETURNING TO COLLEGE LATER THAT WEEK HE STATED IT WORSENED TO LEAKAGE ON THE GROUND OF DUEL 4" SPOTS, ONE ON EACH SIDE BELOW THE TANK. AFTER VIEWING A PHOTO OF THE BOTTOM OF THE WET TANK I NOTICED DROPS ON THE FORWARD STRAP. I DROVE THE TRUCK TO MY LOCATION THIS PAST WEEKEND AND PULLED THE BED OFF TO ACCESS THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP WHICH HAD STANDING FUEL. UPON TURNING THE KEY TO ACTIVATE THE FUEL PUMP I SAW A FINE PINHOLE SIZED STREAM PUMPING FROM THE PLASTIC 90 DEGREE FITTING ON TOP OF THE PUMP. UPON CLOSER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED THIS LEAKING FITTING HAD WHAT APPEARED TO BE ABRASION AT THE OUTSIDE TURN. I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT FITTING AND REPLACED IT FIXING THE LEAKAGE PROBLEM. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR TO ME WAS THE 8 HOURS VACATION TIME AT $28 PER HOUR I WAS REQUIRED TO USE TO ACCOMPLISH THE REPAIR AND THE COST OF THE NEW FUEL LINE FITTING. THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS FITTING FAILURE AND MY CONCERN IS THAT IT WILL HAPPEN TO SOMEONE WITH LESS AWARENESS OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS WHILE DRIVING THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE. HAD THIS FAILURE GONE UNDETECTED, IGNORED OR EVEN SPRAYED FUEL ONTO THE ADJACENT HOT EXHAUST THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. FORD AND THE NHSTA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO FIRST WHAT CAUSES THE DAMAGE TO THESE FITTINGS AND IF REPLACING THIS PLASTIC FITTING WITH A STEEL ONE WOULD BE A WAY TO PREVENT THIS CRITICAL PART FROM BECOMING DAMAGED OR WORN TO THE POINT OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. THE REPAIR COST SHOULD BE REIMBURSED TO THE OWNERS OF THESE 2000 FORD RANGERS BY FORD SINCE THIS IS AN UNADVERTISED EXPENSE TO US WHO PURCHASED THESE VEHICLES WITH THIS ENGINEERING DEFECT AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. *TR
THIS TRUCK FRAME IS RUSTING OUT SO BAD THAT THE REAR BUMPER WHERE IT IS ATTACHED TO THE FRAME JUST BROKE OFF ON 3/20/13. I ALSO HAVE A FORD ESCAPE 2001 WITH 160000 MILES AND VERY LITTLE RUST. THIS TRUCK HAS ALSO BEEN GARAGED AND KEPT CLEAN AND WASHED ABOVE AND BELOW.

EXTERIOR BODY IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE BUT THE FRAME IS BADLY RUSTED FROM FRONT TO BACK. I AM SCARE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE OR FEAR OF A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE FRAME. CAN NOT REPAIR TO REATTACH THE BUMPER BECAUSE THERE IS LITERALLY NO SOUND METAL LEFT ON THE FRAME TO WELD TO. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE WHEEL SPINDLE HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THIS TRUCK. FIRST OWNER KEPT TRUCK PRISTINE, WASHED EVERY WEEKEND REGARDLESS OF WEATHER.IT WAS SPOTLESS EXCEPT FOR ROTTEN FRONT BUMPER. TEN MONTHS LATER A FOOT AND HALF OF FRAME BADLY ROTTEN. I WIRED UP REAR BUMPER AND KEPT IT THAT WAY UNTIL I HAD THE MONEY FOR A FRAME WELD. BOUGHT STEEL TO DO THIS. IT WAS LIKE THIS FOR A LONG WHILE AND ROT DID NOT SPREAD. LAST DECEMBER TRUCK WAS IN AN ACCIDENT. I WAS NOT THERE. A FRIEND WAS DRIVING. SHE WAS AT A FULL STOP WAITING AT A LIGHT AND WAS REAR-ENDED. I LATER LOOKED AT THE TRUCK AND IT SEEMED EASILY REPAIRABLE TO ME. ONLY PASSENGER FENDER WRINKLED. I WOULD MAKE A WOODEN BED. WHEN I FINALLY GOT THROUGH THE INSURANCE HASSLES AND MY MECHANIC RECEIVED MY TRUCK IN 2/ 2015. I HAD TO WAIT TO DO ANYTHING WITH IT. WHEN MY MECHANIC AND I LOOKED IT OVER THE FRAME WAS RUSTED BADLY AND CRACKED UP BY THE CAB. CRACK APPEARED TO PREDATE THE ACCIDENT. I'M NOT SURE IF YOU CAN HELP ME.

UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE LEAF SPRING SHACKLE CONNECTED TO THE SUBFRAME FAILED DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REPLACEMENT COMPONENTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
