WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY THE FRONT COIL SPRING SNAPPED AND PUNCTURED THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE. THE SPRING WAS HOOKED INTO THE TIRES, SO THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE TIRE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND DEALERSHIP INDICATED THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WHICH COULD BE DUE TO A FACTORY DEFECT IN THE SPRING. THE PART TAG NO. XF12-5310-ALA. CODE NO. KIK. *AK
WHILE BRAKING ENGINE STARTED RACING AT A HIGH RATE INTERMITTENTLY. CONSUMER HADE TO PUMP THE BRAKES. THIS CAUSED A MINOR COLLISION. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM.*AK
1999 FORD TAURUS COIL SPRING FAILURES. *MR THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS HAD BROKEN AT LOW SPEEDS. THEY OPENED UP THE FRONT TIRE LIKE A CAN OPENER. THE SHARP BROKEN EDGE OF THE SPRING STUCK INTO THE TIRE AS IT ROTATED. *SC *JB
PASSENGER SAFETY BELT, IN BACK SEAT WILL NOT RETRACT. WENT TO MY FORD DEALER TO HAVE THEM REPLACE IT UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT THEY SAID "NORMAL". THIS BELT NEVER RETRACTS LIKE THE OTHERS AND OFTEN THE DOOR GETS SHUT ON IT. DISCOVERED LATER THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THESE BACK SEAT BELTS, BUT THE BELT'S DATE OF MANUFACTURE NOT IN THE RANGE FOR THE RECALL. *AK
MY VEHICLE WAS HIT AT AN ESTIMATED 50 MPH BY A DRIVER WHO BLEW A RED LIGHT. IT WAS HIGH JUST IN FRONT OF THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL. THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY DURING THE CRASH. MY VEHICLE WAS TOTALED IN THIS CRASH. IT PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE MADE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IF THEY HAD NOT DEPLOYED. HOWEVER I WAS ADVISED THAT A REPORT SHOULD BE MADE TO NHTSA. *JB
1999 FORD TAURUS WAS STARTED IN THE GARAGE, PLACED IN REVERSE, AND ROLLED BACK 1 FOOT WHEN THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND THE FRONT OF THE CAR DROPPED. LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN AND SEVERED THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE MECHANIC WHERE HE DETERMINED THAT THE STRUT AND SPRING AND TIRE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NOTE - THIS COMPLAINT IS THE SUBJECT OF ODI INVESTIGATION # PE 02-080 PROMPTED BY IE02-103. A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE FORD VEHICLE IN THE "RUST BELT". *NM
WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY CONSUMER HEARD A SNAPPING SOUND. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION CONSUMER FOUND THAT THE COIL SPRING BROKE AND SLICED THE LEFT TIRE.*AK
WHEN DRIVING MY CAR,THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL COME ON PERIODICALLY WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON.THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING DOWN A ROAD WITH OR WITHOUT HAVING MADE A TURN. IT HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 40 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST YEAR.MY FORD DEALER SAYS THEY CANNOT FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY CAN'T MAKE THE PROBLEM HAPPEN,THEREFORE,THEY CAN'T FIX IT.THIS SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING WITH A 2ND 1999 TAURUS THAT I OWN AND MY SON DRIVES.PRETTY STRANGE COINCIDENCE,WOULDN'T YOU SAY?MY FEAR IS THAT WHEN I NEED THE WIPERS TO WORK SOMEDAY THEY WILL FAIL COMPLETELY AND NOT GO ON AT ALL.
THE DRIVER'S SIDE COIL SPRING RUPTURED. TWO MONTHS LATER A RECALL NOTICE WAS ISSUED FOR THAT PART, HOWEVER, DEALER INSISTED THEY COULD NOT REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE COIL BECAUSE IT HAD NOT YET FAILED. *AK *SC *JB
1999 FORD TAURUS --UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE A VERY LOUD BANG WAS HEARD. NO DAMAGE WAS NOTED AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE. APPARENTLY THE FRONT SPRING/COIL BROKE INTO TWO PIECES - WE ARE TOLD THIS IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL AND ALMOST ALWAYS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. UPON ATTEMPTING TO MOVE THE CAR, THE TIRE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY GASHED INTO TWO PIECES ALSO AND THE CAR ABRUPTLY WENT DOWN ON THE PASSENGER FRONT SIDE, AND EVENTUALLY TOWED AWAY. FORTUNATELY THE CAR WAS IN VERY SLOW MOTION AT THE TIME OF THE BREAK OF THE FRONT SPRING. I HAVE READ ABOUT OTHER OWNERS THAT HAD THIS OCCUR AND THOUGHT I BETTER MAKE YOU AWARE THAT YET ANOTHER HAS OCCURRED. *AK
ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAYED ON WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THIS OBSTRUCTED THE DRIVER'S VISION. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED.*AK WHENEVER THE INTERIOR GETS WARM. THE MAP READING LAMP AND THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL STAY ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENDS THE HEATER WILL ALSO TURN ON TO WINDOW DEFROST. THE LED FOR THE HEATER WILL ALSO START FLICKERING ON AND OFF. *EH *JB
UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE, THEN, A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD WHILE REVERSING. THE NOISE OCCURRED BECAUSE COIL SPRING BROKE AND PUNCTURED THE FRONT LEFT TIRES. *AK LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING, SWAY BAR AND TIRE WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER. *LA
WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. VEHICLE WAS TOWED. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE INTERIOR LIGHT CONTINUES TO REMAIN ON AND THE DASH READOUT INDICATES THAT THERE IS A DOOR OPEN WHEN THERE ACTUALLY ISN'T. AS A RESULT, THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WILL NOT LOCK AS LONG AS THE CAR BELIEVES THERE IS AN UNLOCKED DOOR. *JB
BOTH FRONT COIL SPINGS OF MY 99 TAURUS FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY WHILE MY 16 YR OLD SON WAS DRIVING. A SHARE OF SPRING SHREDDED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE, NEARLY CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WITH THIS BRAND NEW DRIVER. I HAVE THE PARTS AS WELL AS DIGITAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE. ONLY 54000 MILES ON VEHICLE. *CB
MY 1999 FORD TAURUS POWER STEERING PUMP AND/OR STEERING RACK FAILED, CAUSING ME TO HAVE EXTREME DIFFICULTY TO DRIVE THE CAR.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH CONSUMER, THE CONSUMER HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE LOST AIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE GARAGE, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE SPRING BROKE AND THE SUSPENSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK WHEN THE FLAT TIRE WAS REMOVED, THE SPRING WAS SEEN BROKEN AND WENT THROUGH THE TIRE. THERE WAS NO WARNING. THE CONSUMER HAD TO REPLACE BOTH STRUTS. *SC *JB
FRONT COIL SPRING FAILURE RESULTING IN THE RUPTURE AND DESTRUCTION OF A TIRE. REPLACED BOTH FRONT SPRINGS AND TIRE. PARTS NOT AVAILABLE. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 15 MPH, CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL, SUDDENLY LOST THE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP. THE MECHANIC INDICATED THE FRONT COIL SPRING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAD BROKEN AND PUNCTURED THE TIRE. DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *LA
WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH CONSUMER NOTICED THAT VEHICLE WAS STEADILY SLOWING DOWN TO A STOP. CONSUMER PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. A MECHANIC EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT TRANSMISSION WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS INSTALLED. *AK
COIL SPRING BROKE AND PUNCTURED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WHILE REVERSING. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP.*AK
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 55 MPH WHEN I HEARD A BIG BANG AND MY CAR WAS HEADED TO THE OTHER LANE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED GETTING THE CAR UNDER CONTROL, WHEN I HIT A MAIL BOX AND MY AIR BAG DEFLATED. I WAS THEN THROWN UP INTO THE AIR AND RAN STRAIGHT INTO A PILE OF HARD WOOD LOGS. THERE WERE ABOUT 40 LOGS SITTING IN THE PILE. I HIT HALF WAY UP THE PILE WHICH SENT A LOG THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD AND DIRECTLY INTO MY FACE. I WAS KNOCKED OUT COLD. WHEN I AWOKE I FOUND THE AMBULANCE CREW TRYING TO REMOVE ME FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CAR HIT SO HARD THAT IT FOLDED IT ALMOST IN HALF. THANK GOD I AM STILL ALIVE BUT I LOST ALL MY FRONT TEETH, MY COLLAR BONE WAS PULLED OUT THE SOCKET, I HAD WHIPLASH, MY BACK WAS HURT AND IS STILL BOTHERING ME TO THIS DAY. I STILL HAVE FLASHBACKS FROM THIS DAY. I MUST TO HAD A GUARDIAN ANGLE WITH ME THAT DAY BECAUSE PEOPLE STILL CANNOT BELIEVE HOW I WALKED AWAY FROM THAT ACCIDENT THAT DAY. *JB
WHILE TURNING INTO A PARKING PLACE AT THE MOVIE THEATER, THE CAR SUDDENLY SEEMED TO HAVE SLIPPED INTO NEUTRAL GEAR, EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR INDICATOR DID NOT MOVE FROM THE DRIVE POSITION. I TRIED TO CHANGE INTO REVERSE AND DRIVE AND LOW GEARS BUT THE CAR DID NOT MOVE. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND ENDED UP NEEDING $2,000 WORTH OF TRANSMISSION REPAIRS. I BOUGHT THE CAR(USED-ONE PREVIOUS OWNER) IN AUG 2001 AND I STILL HAVE AN AUTO LOAN WHICH I AM PAYING, SO THIS BILL HAS DEVASTATED ME. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL "MAJOR" PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR, BUT THIS WAS THE WORST.*AK
THE "RACK AND PINION" ON MY 1999 FORD TAURUS NEEDS REPLACING. I THINK THIS IS TOO SOON UNDER "NORMAL" CITY DRIVING. THE CAR IS STILL UNDER THE 6 YR.-75,000MI. WARRANTY. *AK
THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING BROKE CAUSING THE TIRE TO RUPTURE. THIS HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT AT LOW SPEED. *NM
WHILE ACCELERATING ON AN ON RAMP TO THE INTERSTAE GOING APPROXIMATELY 35-40MPH THERE WAS A LOUD BANG ORGINATING FROM THE VEHICLES FRONT LEFT SIDE. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE BROKEN FRONT LEFT COIL SPRING WHICH PUNCTURED THE FRONT LEFT TIRE. THIS RESULTED IN AN OVER $900.00 SERVICE BILL.*AK
I JUST READ ABOUT A NHTSA RECALL CONCERNING 1999 FORD TAURUS SEDANS AND THE FRACTURING OF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. WE OWN A 1999 FORD TAURUS STATION WAGON AND ONE OF OUR FRONT COIL SPRINGS FRACTURED A FEW MONTHS AGO. WE LIVE IN A COLD WEATHER STATE. DOES THIS RECALL COVER STATION WAGONS? IF NOT, I REQUEST AN INVESTIGATION INTO MY COMPLAINT.
WHILE DRIVING ON PA TURNPIKE ON FEB 6, 2004, THE DRIVER SIDE CONTROL ARM BROKE CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL TO THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE FRAME AND RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE BEING DEEMED A "TOTAL LOSS".*AK

THE VEHICLE RACK AND PINION WAS REPLACED AT 54000. THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION. THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG PARTIALLY DEPLOYED AND THE PASSENGER'S AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *NM *MR
1999 FORD TAURUS. CONSUMER STATES THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS BROKE ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. *TGW
UPON STARTING VEHICLE CONSUMER HEARD A NOISE. CONSUMER CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL AND FOUND OUT THAT THE LEVEL WAS LOW. FLUID WAS DRAINING INTO THE BELLOWS, WHICH WAS A RUBBER BOOT THAT PROTECTED THE INNER TIE ROD. CONSUMER DETERMINED THAT A SNAPPED RING WAS MISSING FROM THE BELLOWS. *AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL 04V322000 CONCERNING FRONT COIL SPRING CONSUMER WAS NOTIFIED IN AUGUST 2004 THAT THE PARTS NEEDED WILL BE AVAILABLE BY DECEMBER, 2004. AS OF TODAY, CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER AS WELL AS THE MANUFACTURER, AND ALL THEY WERE SAYING WAS TO CONTINUE CALLING FOR AVAILABILITY CONFIRMATION. *AK THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE PARTS HAD NOT ARRIVED. *JB
ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO FROZEN CAM SHAFT DUE TO FAULTY PRESS FIT CAM CONTAINER REPORTED ON 30% OF YAMAHA BUILT FORD TAURUS SHO V8 ENGINES (ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT) BUILT BETWEEN 1996 & 1999. * CB
I HAVE A 1999 FORD TAURUS STATION WAGON. IN 2003 THE RLEFT REAR SEAT BELT WOULD SOMETIMES GET STUCK AND NOT RETRACT. I WOULD HAVE TO FEED THE BELT BACK INTO THE MECHANISM IN ORDER FOR THE BELT TO FINALLY WORK. AFTER DOING THIS FOR SOME TIME, I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER IN DECEMBER, 2003 AND PAID TO HAVE THE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY REPLACED. IN 2006, I AGAIN HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE LEFT AND RIGHT REAR SEAT BELTS AND THE LEFT FRONT SEAT BELT. I AGAIN TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD DEALER IN DECEMBER 2006 AND HAD ALL THREE OF THE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES REPLACED. AT THE TIME I ASKED THE PERSON AT THE DEALER IF THERE WAS A RECALL OR ANYTHING ON THE SEAT BELTS SINCE THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME IN 3 YEARS THAT I HAD THE PROBLEM. THEY PRETTY MUCH IGNORED MY QUESTION. NOW I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON SEAT BELT MECHANISMS AND OWNERS WERE NOTIFIED BEGINNING IN 1999. WE DID NOT PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE UNTIL 2001. *TR
RACK AND PINION SEAL LEAKS FLUID INTO THE RIGHT HAND BOOT AND THEN THE GROUND, CAUSING THE POWER STEERING NOT TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AND FAILURE TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP. I CAN'T BELIEVE FORD DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE SAFTY AND LOYALTY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND TAKE STEPS TO CORRECT THIS CONSISTANT DEFECT QUITE COMMON IN THIS MODEL.*AK
POWER STEERING PUMP SEAL HAD DRASTIC LEAK. THIS CAUSED THE FLUID TO LEAK OUT AND DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE EFFORT REQUIRED TO STEAR THE VEHICLE. SUCH DIFFICULTY IN STEARING COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A CRASH.*AK
THE CONSUMER NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH. THE HOOD THEN BURST INTO FLAMES. THE FIRE BURNT THROUGH THE PAINT ON THE HOOD, MELTED THE FRONT TIRE, DASHBOARD AND OTHER FRONT END COMPONENTS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HASN'T IDENTIFIED THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE CONSUMER FEELS IT MAY BE RELATED TO THE RECALL 98V288000 FOR THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINE. THE VIN NUMBER IS OUTSIDE THE REMEDY SCOPE. *NM *NM
HEATER CORE HAD TO BE REPLACED. DEALER STATED THAT IT BECAME CLOGGED BECAUSE OF SLUDGE BUILDUP.*AK
TRANSMISSION PARK ROD BROKE WITHOUT WARNING. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS DOWN A DRIVEWAY AND HIT A MAIL BOX. IT CONTINUED DOWN HILL AT 80 MPH AND WENT THROUGH A YARD BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. THE SHIFT LEVER WAS STILL IN PARK.*AK *JB
POWER STEERING FAILURE- STEERING PUMP GROWLING AND WHINING WAS FOLLOWED BY OVERFLOW OF POWER STEERING FLUID AROUND CAP. REPAIR SHOP REPLACED POWER STEERING PUMP ($200) WHICH WORKED FOR LESS THAN 30 MINUTES BEFORE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILED AGAIN. REPAIR SHOP IS NOW DIAGNOSING PROBLEM AS RACK AND PINION SEAL LEAKAGE ISSUE AND RECOMMENDING REPLACEMENT AT ANOTHER $ 200+ FOR PARTS PLUS 2+ HOURS OF LABOR. PURCHASED THIS CAR 11 MONTHS AGO WITH 26,000 MILES ON IT. FORD SAYS IT ISN'T THEIR PROBLEM. I WILL REMEMBER THAT WHEN I BUY MY NEXT CAR!*AK
BRAKES WERE APPLIED WHILE CHANGING LANES AND NOTHING HAPPENED, EMERGENCY BRAKE HAD TO BE APPLIED. *PH *MR
DRIVER SIDE COIL SPRING FAILURE RESULTING IN PUNCTURE OF DRIVER SIDE TIRE. CAR REPAIRED AT DEALER. BOTH SRINGS AND LEFT STRUT BEARING REPLACED. FORD DECLINED TO COVER ANY COST. THIS WAS MY WIFE'S CAR AND FREQUENTLY CARRIES THE FAMILY, LUCKILY FAILURE WAS AT LOW SPEED AND DID NOT PUT MY FAMILY AT RISK BUT MY FEELING IS FORD HAS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IN A DESIGN WHICH ALLOWS FOR A DRIVE TIRE PUNCTURE TO OCCUR. I STILL HAVE COIL SPRING THAT FAILED. *LA
WHEN APPLYING THE GAS VEHICLE STALLED. THE GAS LINE WAS REPLACED, THE ENGINE HAD BEEN TUNED, AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL.*AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS TURN ON WITHOUT USING THE SWITCH. *AK
THE REAR SUSPENSION IS VERY LOW IN THE REAR, THE CAR RIDES VERY ROUGH, AND THE PEOPLE AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT'S NORMAL, I HAVE TALKED TO A FORD DEALER AND HE SAID NO IT'S NOT. I TRIED TO GET IT FIXED AND THEY WONT DO IT, THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN OFF THE ROAD, AND I REFUSE TO PAY FOR IT ANYMORE. *AK
MY FORD TAURUS ANT-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT UNDER THE DASH BOARD WHILE DRIVING ALTERNATELY FLASHES ON AND OFF SOMETIMES WHILE I AM BRAKING. WHILE BRAKING SOMETIMES THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES DOESN'T WORK.*AK

WHILE DRIVING CATALYTIC CONVERTER DEVELOPED A CRACK. OWNER CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP REGARDING THE PROBLEM.*AK
