TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, HE NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD WAS SOAKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE BLOWER MOTOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE SEALANT NEEDED TO REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 205,000.

I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT UNTO THE STREET, AND ANOTHER VEHICLE CAME SPEEDING DOWN THE ROAD AND DIDN'T BLOW HER HORN OR SLOW DOWN WHEN SHE SAW ME, AND COLLIDED INTO MY VEHICLE. THE IMPACT OF THE OTHER VEHICLE PUSHED MY CAR OUT INTO THE MIDDLE OF HE STREET. I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON. I HAD PASSENGER IN CAR WITH ME. THEY HAD THERE SEATBELT ON TOO. NEITHER AIR BAGS OPENED. AFTER THE ACCIDENT, I HAD TO GO TO MISS WORK BECAUSE MY BACK WAS HURTING SO BAD. THE VERY NEXT DAY I GOT A RIDE TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM BECAUSE MY BACK WAS HURTING SO SEVERELY. THE DR. DIAGNOSED ME WITH CHRONIC BACK PAIN WHICH WAS DUE FROM ACCIDENT. I WAS PRESCRIBED 2 TYPES OF MEDICATION TO TAKE, AND DR. SAID I MAY HAVE TO SEE A SPECIALIST IF NO IMPROVEMENT. I HAVE DR REPORT AND ACCIDENT REPORT UPON REQUEST. I AM STILL IN PAIN. *TR

WHEN THEY WERE ABLE TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE GEAR, THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC WHO DID NOT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING MY 2001 FORD TAURUS SES TODAY AT CITY SPEEDS (30 MPH) I HEARD A VERY LOUD METALLIC CLANKING SOUND. I DROVE STRAIGHT HOME AND WE PUT THE CAR ON THE LIFT TO INSPECT. WE FOUND THE FRONT LEFT COIL SPRING WAS BROKEN FROM WHAT APPEARS TO BE RUST/CORROSION. WE LIVE IN ILLINOIS & CALLED FORD TO SEE ABOUT THE RECALL (04V332-4235) AND HOW TO GO ABOUT REPAIRING THIS. THE AGENT CHECKED OUR VIN AND TOLD US THAT OUR CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THIS RECALL DESPITE HAVING BEEN PRODUCED IN THE CHICAGO MANUFACTURING PLANT, WHICH IS ONE OF THE PLANTS INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. OUR TIRE WAS VERY CLOSE TO BEING SHREDDED BY THE BROKEN SPRING AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE OUR CAR SHOULD BE A PART OF THIS RECALL AND STATED TO THE FORD AGENT THAT I WAS DISSATISFIED BY THE APPARENT RUNAROUND I WAS RECEIVING. I REQUESTED A FORMAL COMPLAINT TO BE MADE, AND HE STATED HE WOULD PLACE MY COMPLAINT IN THEIR DATABASE. IF HE ACTUALLY DID, I HAVE NO IDEA. ALL CARS PRODUCED IN THE TIME FRAME AT THE CHICAGO PLANT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT AGAIN DUE TO THIS ISSUE. *TR
DURING MULTIPOINT INSPECTION DEALER FOUND REAR SPRINGS BROKEN TOTAL COST OF REPAIR $572.58 . YOUR DATA BASE SHOWS THIS HAS BEEN A DEFECTIVE PART ISSUE AND NO RECALL. LOCAL DEALER NOT AWARE OF REAR SPRING ISSUE. *TR
WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SURGE AT FULL THROTTLE. IN THE ELEVEN YEARS I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE THIS IS THE FOURTH INSTANCE OF THE VEHICLE SURGING. TO RECOVER FROM THIS CONDITION IT WAS NECESSARY TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF, PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK, AND ATTEMPT TO RESTART. IT TOOK THREE ATTEMPTS AT RESTARTING TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS IN FOR REPAIR. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION WHICH MUST BE ADDRESSED BY NHTSA. *TR
WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS AT A STEADY SPEED, THE CAR BEGAN TO SPEED UP RAPIDLY, REACHING NEAR 55 MPH WITHIN SECONDS. THE ENGINE STAYED AROUND 4,000 RPM AND USING THE BRAKES ONLY SLOWED THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT STOP IT. TO AVOID A CRASH, THE ONLY OPTION I HAD WAS TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND TURN IN TO A PARKING LOT. ONCE IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE'S RPM REMAINED CLOSE TO 4,000. AFTER TURNING THE IGNITION OFF, I INSPECTED UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR TO FIND THAT THE FLIMSY PLASTIC PIECE THAT HOLDS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE IN THE PROPER POSITION WAS BROKEN IN SEVERAL PLACES, LEAVING THE CABLE FREE TO GET CAUGHT ON WHAT IS LEFT OF THE PLASTIC PIECE EXTREMELY EASILY. SINCE THAT INCIDENT, THE EXACT SAME SITUATION HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. DUE TO THE PLASTIC PIECE BEING BROKEN, THE CABLE DOES NOT SIT INSIDE THE PLASTIC PIECE AS INTENDED, WHICH HAS CAUSED THE RPM TO STAY HIGHER THAN NORMAL AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE CAR IS IN GEAR. WHILE DRIVING, REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO BEGIN DECELERATING BEFORE A STOP HAS NO EFFECT, AS IF THE CRUISE CONTROL IS ENGAGED AT ALL TIMES. SLOWING THE VEHICLE CAN ONLY BE DONE BY USING THE BRAKES. THIS SITUATION CAME VERY SUDDENLY WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF ANY PROBLEM. THE RAPID, UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION POSES A SEVERE SAFETY THREAT TO DRIVER AND ANYBODY AROUND THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY THERE WAS NOT ANY TRAFFIC WHEN THIS HAPPENED TO ME, AND THERE WAS A PARKING LOT NEARBY TO EXIT THE ROAD. IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE IN MODERATE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC, A CRASH WOULD BE VERY LIKELY. THIS ISSUE IS UNPREDICTABLE AND HAS HAPPENED TO ME AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 70 MPH AND AT ROAD SPEEDS OF 35 MPH. I HAVE SINCE DECIDED TO PARK MY CAR AND NOT OPERATE IT UNTIL I CAN FIX THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT IS HIGHLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN ITS CURRENT STATE. *TR
THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK IN THE FULL OPEN POSITION AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A SIDE STREET. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT BY THE TIME THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF THE TRANSMISSION HAD TOTALLY FRIED AND ALL THE FLUIDS CAME OUT OF THE ENGINE. *TR
ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE THROTTLE CABLE (OR SPEED CONTROL CABLE) GOT STUCK AND MY CAR ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. LUCKILY, BOTH TIMES I WAS FAIRLY CLOSE TO HOME AND MADE IT WITHOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT, I FOUND WHERE THE CABLE WAS GETTING HUNG UP. I SPRAYED IT WITH WD-40, BUT THAT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT DO THE TRICK AS IT HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY. I'VE READ WHERE OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND, GIVEN THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AM SHOCKED THAT THE NHTSA HASN'T TAKEN ACTION. *TR

2001 FORD TAURUS DOOR LOCK NOT LATCHING DURING WINTER WEATHER. VERY SERIOUS AND SCARY SAFETY ISSUE, VERY MUCH SO WHEN THEIR IS ICE AND SNOW ON THE ROADS. ATTENDING WORK AND APPOINTMENTS IS MANDATORY. HOLDING THE DOOR SHUT WHILE DRIVING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. AFTER MINIMAL RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THOUSANDS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. I PULLED OUT OF A GAS STATION. CAME UP TO A STOP LIGHT. AFTER THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR THEN NOTICED THE CAR WAS INCREASING IN SPEED WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. CAME UP TO ANOTHER STOP LIGHT AND COULD BARELY GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. *TR
TRAVELING AT 45MPH SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE, RPM'S JUMPED YET NO RESPONSE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I CAN SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR AND THE VEHICLE ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL. *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT A MOUNTING PIECE ON THE THROTTLE CABLE FRACTURED AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DISCONNECTED TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE ALTHOUGH HE HAD REMOVED HIS FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC, WHO DISCOVERED A CORRODED BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE. THE FAILURE WAS REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,000.
THE FRONT, LEFT COIL SPRING BROKE LEAVING A JAGGED EDGE THAT SHREDDED THE TIRES SIDEWALL WHEN THE CAR WAS PUT IN REVERSE. I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THE SPRING BROKE, BUT I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY PRIOR TO PARKING THE VEHICLE. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY, THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS. THE TIRE THAT WAS SHREDDED WAS A NEAR NEW STUDDED SNOW TIRE. THE TOTAL COST TO REPAIR THE SUSPENSION AND REPLACE THE TIRE WILL BE ABOUT 400 - 500 DOLLARS. *TR

VEHICLE DOORS WILL NOT LATCH WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 30 DEGREES. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM AND WELL IS REPORTED THROUGHOUT MANY MODEL YEARS FOR FORD TAURUS. IT IS A DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 FORD TAURUS ONTO A FREEWAY AND GOT UP TO 45 MPH AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AFTER I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE GAS. I ATTEMPTED TO PRESS ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD AND THE CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING. PRESSING THE BRAKE WOULD NOT MAKE THE CAR STOP. I WAS NOT USING CRUISE CONTROL. I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK, THE CAR WAS STILL REVVING UP, SO I TURNED THE CAR OFF. I WAITED A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND CONTINUED DRIVING AND THE CAR EXHIBITED THE SAME CONDITIONS AS BEFORE. I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE FREEWAY AND WAS ABOUT TO GET TO AN INTERSECTION THAT HAD A STOP SIGN. I REALIZED THAT EVEN AFTER PRESSING DOWN ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD, THE CAR WAS NOT GOING TO STOP SO I PROCEEDED TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AGAIN AND QUICKLY PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURN THE CAR OFF. I LEFT THE CAR THERE AND WALKED TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND TOWED THE CAR HOME. I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING ANYMORE AND IT IS A MIRACLE THAT I DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR
I LOST BRAKING WHEN A CAME TO A HARD STOP. NOTICED THAT BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING OUT BY DRIVER'S DOOR. I FOUND OUT THE BRAKE LINES THAT GO TO THE REAR OF THE CAR RUPTURED. MOST OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE VISIBLE AND ARE IN GOOD SHAPE UNDER THE VEHICLE. PART OF THE BRAKE LINES RISE UNDER A RECESS IN THE UNDERBODY FLOOR. THERE A PLASTIC SHIELD PROTECTS IT FROM THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE. IT WAS THERE THAT THE LINES HAD CORRODED BADLY AND RUPTURED. THIS IS LISTED ON SITED ON THE INTERNET AND SHOULD BE WARNED TO ALL TAURUS OWNERS. *TR

THE VEHICLE THEN SLIGHTLY CRASHED INTO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE WAS REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN CAUTIOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHICH CAUSED ANOTHER CRASH. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A NECK INJURY. A SECOND POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,000.

THERE WAS A CONCURRENT INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE12033 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CRUISE CONTROL VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CRUISE CONTROL VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
RIM (WHEEL) RIPPED APART WITH THE LUG NUTS AND CENTER OF RIM STILL ATTACHED TO CAR / ROTOR: MY SON WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX. 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE FRONT RIGHT PASSENGER WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE. BEFORE HE COULD STEP ON THE BRAKE THE TIRE AND MOST OF THE RIM WAS DETACHED FROM THE CAR CAUSING EXCESSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. FROM THE CENTER LANE, THE CAR WENT SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY BARELY MISSING A LARGE POLE AND EVENTUALLY COMING TO A STOP. THE MECHANIC ON THE SCENE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS IN HIS LONG CAREER OF MECHANICS. THE TECHNICIAN DETERMINED THAT THE PLASTIC RING ON THE END OF THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DEFECTIVE DUE TO DAMAGED PRONGS THAT SNAPPED. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE CRUISE CONTROL TO BECOME STUCK WHEN PRESSING THE THROTTLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. I HAD JUST PUNCHED THE GAS PEDAL AND THEN WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES A FEW SECONDS LATER, BUT THE CAR WASN'T REALLY SLOWING. LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED THE RPMS WERE AT 4000 SO I MOVED THE TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL AND THE CAR STARTED SLOWING MORE. THE CAR KEPT REVVING AT 4K RPMS THOUGH SO I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I HADN'T COME TO A COMPLETE STOP YET SO THE LAST FEW FEET WERE HARDER TO STOP, BUT LUCKILY THERE WASN'T ANY TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME AND I WASN'T IN ANY DANGER OF HITTING ANYONE/ANYTHING. I TRIED STARTING THE CAR UP AGAIN AND IT WENT RIGHT UP TO 4000K RPMS, I SHUT IT OFF AND THEN TRIED TO HIT THE GAS PEDAL THINKING THAT MAYBE IT WAS STUCK OR THERE WAS SOMETHING UNDER IT OR SOMETHING, BUT THAT WASN'T IT SO I SHUT THE CAR OFF AGAIN. THEN I POPPED THE HOOD AND NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE CABLES THAT WENT TO THE THROTTLE HAD SLID OUT OF A GREY BOOT AND WAS JAMMED AGAINST THE SIDE OF THAT BOOT HOLDING THE THROTTLE OPEN. I MOVED IT BACK SO THAT IT POPPED INTO THE CENTER. STARTED IT UP AGAIN AND IT WAS FINE. CLOSER EXAMINATION LATER SHOWED THAT THE GREY CONNECTOR THAT HOLDS THE CABLE IN THE CENTER HAD LITTLE BITS BROKEN OFF. IF THOSE BITS THERE , IT WOULD PREVENT THE CABLE FROM SLIDING OUT. AS THIS WAS ON A WEEKEND, AS A TEMPORARY FIX, I USED A ZIP TIE AND SOME DUCT TAPE TO HOLD IT IN BEFORE I GOT A NEW CRUISE CONTROL CABLE. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAD HAPPENED TO ME. *TR

I WAS MERGING ONTO THE FREEWAY AND I ACCELERATED UP TO THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC WHICH WAS 65 MPH. I LET UP OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. FRONT PASSENGER COIL SPRING FRACTURED. THIS WAS AN ITEM THAT WAS COVERED BY RECALL 04M04. THE FIX WAS TO INSTALL A CHEAP PLATE TO PREVENT THE COIL SPRING FROM PUNCTURING THE TIRE WHEN IT CRACKS. THE RECALL INCLUDED A PREVISION TO REPLACE A BROKEN SPRING IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN SERVICE LESS THAN 10 YEARS OR LESS THAN 150,000. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THE CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS NOT TO FIX THE COIL SPRING ITSELF BEFORE IT WOULD BREAK. *JS
