THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING FRACTURED AND PIERCED THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 162,000. THE VIN INFORMATION WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
NEW YEARS EVE WITH MY HUSBAND MYSELF ,SON AND HIS FIANCES DAUGHTER IN THE CAR ,DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT 70MPH ,HEADING TO RESTAURANT, RT FRONT COIL BROKE. THANK GOD IT DIDN'T SLICE TIRE AND CAUSE A BLOW OUT AND KILL US OR SOMEONE ELSE. WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO RECALL ON COILS INSTALLED ON FORD TAURUS NEWER THAN 2001?? THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT OF COIL FAILURE ON MY CAR, A BACK ONE WENT A FEW YEARS AGO. *TR
I HAD NOTICED THAT MY ACCELERATOR WOULD GET STUCK JUST LIGHTLY PUSHING ON THE PEDAL ONCE THE CAR WARMED UP IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN BUT IT HAD HAPPENED ALL WINTER LONG. WHENEVER YOU WOULD START IT UP AND START TO DRIVE THE ACCELERATOR WOULD GET STUCK FULL THROTTLE AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND SHUT THE CAR OFF, OPEN THE HOOD AND PULL BACK ON THE CABLE THAT CONTROLS THE THROTTLE. I CALLED FORD AND NOTIFIED THEM OF IT IN CASE OF A POSSIBLE RECALL AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM AND THAT IT IS JUST A COMMON FAILURE THEN PROMPTED ME TO BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE AT A TUNE OF $350.00. I OF COURSE DID NOT BECAUSE TO ME THAT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED. I HAVE OWNED MANY CARS, MOSTLY FOREIGN AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY SUCH PROBLEMS. BUT THIS CAR IS PLAGUED WITH ISSUES. FAULTY ACCELERATORS, FAULTY BRAKES AND ROTORS WARPING FREQUENTLY FOR NO REASON, SENSORS FAILING, OIL PRESSURE PROBLEMS, OIL SMELL INSIDE THE CABIN AT SITTING IDLE, CAMSHAFT SYNCHRONIZER FAILURE. FORD NEEDS TO BE CALLED ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. I LIVE ON A DISABILITY INCOME, CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW CAR YET FOR THE AMOUNT OF REPAIRS I'VE HAD TO COMPLETE ON THIS CAR I COULD HAVE BOUGHT NEAR NEW. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLY LOOK INTO THE OTHER PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PARTICULAR TAURUS. FORD SOLD A SHADY PRODUCT AND IS NOT SUPPORTING IT AND MAKING THE CONSUMER PAY FOR THEIR MANUFACTURING DEFECTS. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON AN ICY ROAD, THE VEHICLE SKIDDED AND ROLLED INTO A DITCH. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT STRUCK HER HEAD, SUSTAINED NECK AND SHOULDER STRAINS, BRUISES TO HER LEGS AND A LACERATION TO THE ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND DEEMED AS BEING DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 234,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE COIL SPRINGS FRACTURED CAUSING THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE TO BLOW OUT. THE CONTACT PULLED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH A SPARE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE COIL SPRING WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON TWO OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
BEGINNING SHORTLY AFTER MY CAR WAS OUT OF ITS 3,000 MILE USED CAR WARRANTY, WHEN CAR WAS PARKED AND LOCKED THE HORN BEGAN TO GO OFF ANYTIME ANYWHERE - UP TO 5-6 TIMES A DAY. WHY IS THIS A SAFETY CONCERN? BECAUSE THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID WAKING OURSELVES AND NEIGHBORS UP AT NIGHT OR HAVING CAR ALARM GO OFF MULTIPLE TIMES DURING DAY AT WORK WAS TO HAVE A FORD TECH DISCONNECT THE HORN! I DID SO AFTER THE PROBLEM CONTINUED FOR MANY MONTHS - AND NOW, WITH HORN OFF, IT STILL CONTINUES (LIGHTS BLINK AND FLASH), JUST NOISELESSLY. INCREDIBLE! ONLY WORKAROUND BESIDES DISCONNECTING HORN WAS TO LEAVE THE CAR UNLOCKED - NOT AN OPTION. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILED ON INSTERSTATE. NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE WHEN THE CONTACT WAS MADE AWARE THAT THE REAR DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SPRINGS WERE FRACTURED AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. LEAVING THE DEALER--BEACH FORD---THROTTLE HUNG WIDE OPEN AND COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. WENT BACK TO DEALER AND TECH. SAID " CRUISE CONTROL CABLE CAME LOOSE AND HUNG THROTTLE OPEN" TECH--GLUED TOGETHER AND I DRIVE THIS WAY NOW. SAID HE WOULD PUT HIS WIFE IN THE CAR BECAUSE IT IS SAFE NOW. *TR
2002 FORD TAURUS ALMOST GOT ON FIRE ON 11/2/11. THERE WAS GRAY SMOKE AND HORRIBLE BURNING SMELL COMING OUT OF THE FRONT OF FORD CAR. CALLED THE POLICE DEPT, THEY CAME AND FOUND A BELT BROKE.... IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE POLICE PERSONS THAT CAME TO LET ME KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND WHAT TO DO, ALONG WITH THE FACT (AND LUCK) I HAD THAT I WAS NOT DRIVING ON THE STREET WITH SPEED, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE COULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE AND PRODUCE EVEN MORE DAMAGES FOR MYSELF AND ANYONE THAT COULD BE AROUND. FORD, TK, AND FIRESTONE HAS THE DETAILS OF.. ALL PROBLEMS ON THIS VEHICLE AND WHAT HAS BEEN REPAIRED. *TR ...UPDATE 01/20/12 *BF THE SERPENTINE BELT BROKE. THE CONTACT STATED WHENEVER SHE STOPPED OR ATTEMPTED A TURN, THE CUP WOULD FALL OUT AND ROLL UNDER THE BRAKE OR ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED AT THE REAR TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 198,000.
MY TAURUS 2002, THREE DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT IT USED, EXHIBITED BEHAVIOR JUST LIKE THAT DESCRIBED IN PE12005 FOR 2005-2006 MODEL YEARS. I HAD TO LIMP HOME, ALTERNATING BETWEEN NEUTRAL AND DRIVE, BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS STUCK AT APPROX 3500 RPM. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND ON DID NOT CURE THIS. AFTER ABOUT 20 HARROWING MINUTES DURING RUSH HOUR DRIVING THROUGH A NOT-SO-GREAT SECTION OF DETROIT, THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. FORD TECHS COULD FIND NOTHING; THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED. HOWEVER, BASED ON PE12005, I WILL HAVE THE POSITION OF THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE CHECKED IN CASE THAT WAS (OR COULD AGAIN BE) THE CULPRIT. *JS
MY DAUGHTER HAD AN ACCIDENT IN A 2002 FORD TAURUS SE WHERE SHE IMPACTED A CONCRETE BARRIER HEAD ON AND HARD ENOUGH TO TOTAL THE VEHICLE WHICH WAS OWNED AND INSURED BY ME. THE WORSE OF THE IMPACT WAS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT END. ONLY THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITH NO ONE SEATED THERE, BUT HER DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY AT ALL. THIS RESULTED IN A CONCUSSION AND FACIAL LACERATIONS AND BRUISING WHEN HER FACE HIT THE STEERING WHEEL. THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINING SYSTEM FAILED TO ACT PROPERLY TO PROTECT HER FROM THIS INJURY. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD, BUT THEY DON'T CARE AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THIS IS HOW IT IS DESIGNED TO WORK. SO IT'S ACCEPTABLE TO FORD THAT THEIR RESTRAINING SYSTEM ALLOWS INJURIES? I HOPE THAT SHE DOES NOT SUFFER FROM BRAIN TRAUMA AND I HOPE THAT THE WOUND HEALS WITH MINIMAL SCARING. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. IF THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT INVOLVED, I WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE. *TR
TOOK MY CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY SHOWED ME THAT MY FRONT PASSENGER COIL SPRING WAS BROKEN. WAS TOLD THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE AND IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SPRING GO INTO THEIR TIRES. *TT
MY 2002 FORD TAURUS STOPPED PULLING WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREE WAY. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND FORD WILL NOT HELP WITH ANY OF THE REPAIR COSTS. *TT

THE CONTACT WAS DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE TWO FAILURES WERE RELATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC BUT NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. ON MY VEHICLE, A 2002 FORD TAURUS SES SEDAN WITH A DOHC DURATEC ENGINE, THERE ARE PLASTIC COMPONENTS THAT SECURE THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE TO THE THROTTLE BODY. OVER TIME THESE COMPONENTS WEAR OUT AND BREAK AND BECOME LODGED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO HOLD THE THROTTLE OPEN. THIS CAN HAVE CATASTROPHIC AND LIFE THREATENING CONSEQUENCES. THIS HAPPENED TO ME THIS EVENING. IF I HAD NOT QUICKLY SHIFTED THE VEHICLE?S TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL I WOULD HAVE RAMMED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. FORTUNATELY I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT CARS THAT I WAS ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH ELECTRICAL TIES AND MAKE MY VEHICLE SAFE TO DRIVE. FORD MOTORS HAS A DUTY TO THE PUBLIC TO IMMEDIATELY RECALL ALL VEHICLES WITH THESE PLASTIC COMPONENTS AND FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
A FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP FAILED ON MY 2002 FORD TAURUS DURING NORMAL DRIVING IN WALTON HILLS, OH. THE STRAP WAS PAINTED REGULAR STEEL AND BADLY CORRODED. THIS DEFECT APPEARS TO BE IDENTICAL TO THE AUGUST 2011 RECALL OF F150 AND F250 TRUCKS FOR POTENTIAL FUEL TANK STRAP FAILURE. THE STRAP WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED ASAP AND I WILL SEE IF THE OLD STRAP CAN BE SAVED. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30-35 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND THE ENGINE RPMS INCRESED TO 4000 WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, SHUT THE ENGINE OFF FOR A MOMENT AND WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
ON 7/27/11 WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 FORD TAURUS WHICH HAS APPROX 41000 MILES I HEARD A LOUD BANG FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER ARRIVING AT MY HOME I DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT HAND FRONT COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN. ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE THIS COULD HAVE TURNED INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION HAD THE BROKEN SPRING PUNCTURED THE TIRE. *KB

THE VEHICLE CONTINUED ROLLING AND CRASH INTO ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED A SECOND TIME WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH UP A STEEP INCLINE. THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO THE NEUTRAL POSITION AND MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE SPEED CONTROL CABLES WERE ADJUSTED FOR A QUICK BUT NOT PERMANENT FIX. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, CAUSING HER TO LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING 53 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE DIAGNOSTICS STATED THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS THE SAME.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ABNORMALLY. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD BECOME STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD AND THE CONTACT HAD TO REPEATEDLY PUMP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 90 MPH AS THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO ABRUPTLY APPLY THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL TO DISENGAGE THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. UPON INSPECTION, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR CABLE WAS FRACTURED. HE THEN TAPED THE CABLES TOGETHER AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER WHERE HE PURCHASED A NEW CABLE AND INSTALLED IT HIMSELF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND A CLAIM WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 207,625.
WE DISCOVERED OUR 2002 TAURUS IN THE DRIVEWAY WITH A COMPLETELY FLAT TIRE. UPON REMOVAL OF THE TIRE TO PUT ON A TEMP TIRE WE DISCOVERED THE COIL (FRONT PASSENGER) HAD BROKEN AND HAD PUNCTURED THE TIRE (IT WAS ACTUALLY THROUGH THE TIRE AND WE HAD TO WORK TO GET IT OUT OF THE TIRE). LUCKILY NO ONE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. *TR
NOTICED GRINDING/RUBBING NOISE WHILE DRIVING; NOISE VARIED WITH SPEED, TURNING AND BRAKING. OBSERVED RUBBER RESIDUE IN LEFT REAR WHEEL, ON WHEEL WELL. REMOVED WHEEL, DISCOVERED COIL SPRING RUSTED AND DISLODGED FROM LOWER SUPPORT AND WAS SHAVING THE TIRE. LOSS OF TREAD OBSERVED. COIL SPRING WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CUT TO REMOVE IMPACTING AREA AND WILL BE REPLACED. NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE HE NOTICED THAT THE FRONT SPRING HAD FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER NOR WAS IT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HIM THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ADVISED HIM THAT HE WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE SPRING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 118,000.

I OWN A 2002 FORD TAURUS THAT HAS APPROXIMATELY 39,000 MILES ON IT. ON MONDAY JUNE 13, 2011 I WAS BACKING OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE AT WORK AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE. I GOT OUT AND MY LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS FLAT. I ATTEMPTED TO USE THE SCISSOR JACK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR BUT IT COLLAPSED AND BROKE. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. THE FRONT STRUT AND SPRING BROKE AND EXPLODED INTO THE TIRE. TODAY I HAVE SPENT $1,200 FOR THE REPAIR OF BOTH FRONT SPRINGS AND STRUTS AND 2 NEW TIRES. I WANT TO KNOW WHO TO ADDRESS SO THAT I CAN GET REIMBURSED FOR THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IF I HAVE BEEN ON THE ROAD DRIVING. I AM REPORTING THIS INCIDENT TO THE FEDERAL AGENCY THAT LOOKS INTO SAFETY RECALLS.
THIS MORNING AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, I HEARD A GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. I STOPPED THE CAR AND LOOKED UNDER THE CAR TO CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIONS. I THEN TURNED THE CAR AROUND AND BACKED IT BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY. I BEGAN TO PULL FORWARD SLOWLY, ATTEMPTING TO DETERMINE IF THE NOISE WAS FROM THE BRAKE. AT THAT POINT THE TIRE BLEW, AND THE WAS A LOUD POP. UPON REMOVING THE TIRE, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE COIL AROUND THE STRUT HAD EMBEDDED ITSELF INTO THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, AND TORE A RING ALL THE WAY AROUND. IT LOOKS AS IF I TRIED TO OPEN THE TIRE WITH A CAN OPENER. AFTER REMOVING THE STRUT AND THE COIL, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT A PIECE OF THE COIL HAD SNAPPED OFF UP NEAR THE TOP. AFTER LOOKING AT THE POINT OF THE BREAK, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT THERE WAS NO EROSION, OR RUSTING. THE MECHANIC WHO IS REPAIRING THE STRUT IS QUITE STUNNED, AS IS EVERYONE ELSE WHO HAS SEEN THE PICTURES OF THE TIRE, AND THE COIL. APPARENTLY SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING IS QUITE RARE. IN FACT, THEY ALL HAVE SAID THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING. I AM GRATEFUL THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN AS WE WERE DRIVING ON THE ROAD. YESTERDAY EVENING THE CAR WAS FINE, AND NOT MAKING ANY OF THE GRINDING NOISE AT ALL. *TR
2002 FORD TAURUS WAGON, FRONT COIL SPRING FAILURE WITH TIRE PUNCTURE. SLOWING AS APPROACHING TRAFFIC SIGNAL, SPEED 22MPH, FRONT PASSENGER COIL FAILED. BROKEN COIL SPRING THEN PUNCTURED TIRE, RIPPING LARGE GASH IN INSIDE SIDEWALL CAUSING IMMEDIATE DEFLATION AND BODY OF CAR DROPPED TO THE GROUND SUDDENLY. CUT IN TIRE IS 180 DEGREES AROUND TIRE, . INCIDENT REQUIRED USE OF A TOW TRUCK AND REPLACEMENT OF BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND REPLACEMENT OF ONE TIRE. THANKFUL THAT THIS INCIDENT DIDN'T HAPPEN FIVE MINUTES LATER ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH. AS LOSS OF CONTROL WOULD HAVE BEEN PROBABLE.

WHILE DRIVING TO WORK MY TRANSMISSION FAILED. AFTER HAVING THE CAR TOWED TO THE MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IT ONLY HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE, I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILING DUE TO A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. I HAVE NOT HAD IT REPAIRED AS OF YET. *TR

ON MAY 15, 2011 I WAS USING MY 2002 FORD TAURUS TO RUN ERRANDS . AFTER DRIVING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME I BECAME AWARE OF A STRANGE ODOR, ALL OF THE GAUGES APPEARED NORMAL, AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. HOWEVER, I WAS CONCERNED ENOUGH TO GET A SECOND OPINION. FORTUNATELY, THE FACILITY THAT NORMALLY SERVICES MY VEHICLE IS LOCATED LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM MY HOME. AFTER VISUALLY INSPECTING THE VEHICLE AND CHECKING ALL FLUIDS THE MECHANIC PROCEEDED TO TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE, ATTEMPTING TO DUPLICATE THE SMELL. THE CAR ONLY TRAVELED A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE THE LEFT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. FURTHER INVESTIGATION, ON A LIFT, REVEALED A BROKEN LEFT REAR COIL SPRING. THE JAGGED END OF THE SPRING WAS PROTRUDING INTO THE INNER SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, HAVING CAUSED IT TO RAPIDLY DEFLATE. THE MECHANIC THEN INFORMED ME THAT THE SMELL I EXPERIENCED WAS MOST LIKELY THE BROKEN SPRING RUBBING ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE. TO MY ASTONISHMENT I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT WAS A FAIRLY COMMON EVENT AND THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR FAILURE OF THE REMAINING 3 COIL SPRINGS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONTINUED USE OF THIS VEHICLE, I AM WELL AWARE OF THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUDDEN DEFLATION OF A TIRE AT ROAD SPEED. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT FORD MOTOR COMPANY, BECAUSE I WAS ALSO TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT AT ONE TIME FORD HAD A RECALL AND A CAMPAIGN TO REMEDY SUCH A PROBLEM. TO DATE, I HAVE NOT BEEN SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS.
HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN GARAGE; HEARD A LOUD SOUND AND SUSPECTED THE COIL SPRING SUSPENSION, SINCE I KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FROM PREVIOUS OWNER COMPLAINTS FROM THIS WEBSITE. LEFT COIL SPRING BROKE AND TORE A BIG GASH ON TIRE AND WENT FLAT. CALLED FORD DEALER IN DEARBORN, MI AND THEY TOLD IT WAS COVERED AS A RECALL; TOWED MY CAR OUT THERE AND THEY CHANGED THEIR STORY AND TOLD THIS VIN WAS NOT COVERED AND 2001 MODEL YEAR WAS. WHAT A JOKE. PROMPTLY, I TOWED IT OUT OF THERE (DID NOT WANT TO GIVE THEM ANYMORE BUSINESS) AND GOT IT REPLACED OUTSIDE. CANT BELIEVE FORD DOES NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS A EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS AND CAN HAPPEN TO ANY OF THE COILS. VERY BAD QUALITY STEEL USED IN COIL SPRING AND PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE PREVALENT IN SALT-BELT STATES. EVEN THE TOW-TRUCK DRIVER WAS CASUAL ABOUT IT SAYING HE IS SEEING IT TOO OFTEN (ESPECIALLY WITH CARS WITH HIGH MILES).
